The paper presents an exemplification of data mining techniques in aviation industry on the basis of Turkish Airlines. The purpose of the paper is to present application of data mining on the selected operational data, concerning international flight passenger baggage data, in year 2015. The differences in passenger and flight profiles have been examined. Firstly, two-steps approach allowed defining the number of clusters. Secondly, K-means clustering were applied to divide data into a certain number of clusters representing the different areas of consumption. Results can contribute to higher efficiency in decision making regarding destination offer and fleet management.

The paper analyses the developments in the EU state aid policy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic breakout. The general framework for state aid in the EU was presented. Based on a case study analysis of selected airlines that benefited from state aid following the COVID-19 crisis, changes in the European Commission approach were identified. In general, investigation of arrangements between the state aid cases is a complex (and thus often lengthy) process. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for EU member states and the European Commission as well due to the unexpected, turbulent, and very profound nature of the crisis. It made it necessary to look for new or revised policies for state aid to respond quickly and keep airlines afloat in times when the flow of revenue was practically stopped. One of the key issues that needed to be addressed was inflexibility and lengthiness of state aid approval processes. To this end, additional guidelines were introduced to make the state aid policy of the EU more flexible. This way member states could respond to the ongoing developments in a more targeted and objective-oriented approach, which possibly made state aid more efficient. It should be stressed that it could have been achieved without changes to pre-existing legislation and by adjusting executive guidelines instead.

One of the most prominent features of specialised communication is undoubtedly the terminology used. However, a problem may arise if a specialist needs to provide specific information to a person who does not have expertise in the field and is not familiar with the terminology. Understanding such a message can be easier when images are used. How visual elements are employed in specialised communication is shown here on the example of communication on board of an aircraft. Different images are used by airlines to increase the passengers’ understanding of e.g. safety instructions, which can be crucial in emergency situations. Visual elements such as fastened seat belts, oxygen masks, emergency exits or life vests are depicted i.a. on the safety card. These images are less abstract and more universal than the corresponding written or spoken message and should, therefore, be understood by more people (regardless of their mother tongue and cultural background). The aim of this article is to draw attention to the role of safety cards, the main source of visual information on board, as an element of the communication process between the airline and the passenger. The results are presented to find out whether the images used in safety cards, really make the information provided easier to understand. Or is the statement that “one picture is worth more than a thousand words” not at all applicable on board of an aircraft?

The aim of the article is to answer the question about the compliance of activities and actions connected with granting the marketing fees to low cost airlines from the public funds with the EU law and rules in the scope of state aid. To achieve this aim, the basis of low cost business model and mechanisms of marketing support for LCCs’ routes from public funds have been presented. Then, the issue of marketing fees in the light of EU law and rules regarding the state aid and cases concerning the presumption of unlaw¬ful state aid granted to cheap airlines in the period 2000-2014 have been presented.

The article analyses remarkable changes in activities of the transport airbase in terms of substitution of obsolete aircraft by modern transport airplanes. Further, differences between transport airbase’s aircraft and Czech Airlines’ airplanes are introduced, as well as fundamental tactical and operating specifications, time and space factors regarding personnel transport, supplies transport and possibilities of Airbus A319CJ’s freight hold adjustment in dependence on the nature of transport.
Artykuł analizuje niezwykłe zmiany w działalności wojskowego transportu lotniczego, w warunkach zastępowania przestarzałych samolotów przez nowoczesne samoloty transportowe. Prezentuje dalsze różnice pomiędzy wojskowymi samolotami transportowymi i Czech Airlines (Czeskie Linie Lotnicze), które są wprowadzone a dotyczą: zasadniczych taktycznych i operacyjnych specyfikacji, czasowo – przestrzennych czynników, związanych z organizacją transportu, zapewniania transportu i możliwości Airbusa A319CJ, poprzez przystosowanie go do zapewnienia transportu towarowego odpowiednio do specyfiki wojskowego transportu lotniczego.

Advertising, sales promotion, personal selling and public relation are some of the most important elements used in promotion. Airline promotional activity need to be adapted to the demand on the market. The most suitable advertising option for airline business will depend on target audience and what is the most cost effective way to reach as many of them as possible, as many times as possible. The advertising option chosen should also reflect the right environment for the product or service. The promotion policy helps the company keep control of the message it is sending about the good or service, as well as to dictate appropriate actions that employees can take when dealing with outside personnel. Promotion is one of the key elements of the marketing mix, and deals with any one or two-way communication that takes place with the consumer. The purpose of the article is to clarify what is difference between promotion and marketing activities and has to serve as a part of future prepared study material for students of University of Žilina.
Reklama, upusty, sprzedaż osobista i public relation należą do najważniejszych elementów stosowanych w promocji. Działania w zakresie promocji podejmowane przez linie lotnicze powinny być dostosowane do wymagań rynku. Najlepiej pasująca do branży lotniczej opcja reklamy będzie zależała od docelowego segmentu rynku i od tego, jaki sposób dotarcia do możliwie wielu klientów i możliwie często będzie najbardziej efektywny kosztowo. Wybrana opcja reklamy powinna także odzwierciedlać właściwe środowisko produktu lub usługi. Polityka promocji pomaga firmie utrzymać kontrolę nad komunikatem, jaki wysyła wraz z produktem lub usługą, jak również określić działania, jakie mają podjąć pracownicy kontaktując się z personelem zewnętrznym. Promocja jest jednym z kluczowych elementów marketingu-mix i zajmuje się każdym rodzajem jedno- lub dwukierunkowej komunikacji z klientem. Celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie, jaka jest różnica pomiędzy promocją a marketingiem; ponadto artykuł ma stanowić w przyszłości materiał do studiowania dla studentów Uniwersytetu w Žilinie.

The aim of this article is to present strategic management and airline alliances. Alliances may provide marketing branding to facilitate travelers making inter-airline codeshare connections within countries. In addition to theoretical background, examples of three alliances: Star Alliance, SkyTeam and OneWorld are presented. In this essay the biggest airlines in 2015 are also analyzed.

The airline industry constitutes a challenge for marketing specialists due to high dynamics of provision of information. Airlines strive to communicate more and more effectively with the passenger. The specific character of the branch also constitutes a challenge for mobile application developers, who update them more often than applications of companies from other branches. The goal of this article will be discussing the processes of building relations, efficient communication with clients on the market of passenger airline services using mobile applications. Up till now this problem hasn’t been the subject of both literature studies and empirical research. Source materials for the work will be available literature on the subject, own analyses based on secondary sources, as well as empirical studies conducted among passengers.
Branża lotnicza stanowi wyzwanie dla specjalistów od marketingu ze względu na dużą dynamikę podawania informacji. Linie lotnicze dążą do coraz bardziej efektywnej komunikacji z pasażerem. Specyfika tej branży stanowi również wyzwanie dla deweloperów aplikacji mobilnych, którzy aktualizują je częściej niż aplikacje firm z innych branż. Celem artykułu będzie omówienie procesów budowania relacji, skutecznej komunikacji z klientem na rynku pasażerskich usług lotniczych przy wykorzystaniu aplikacji mobilnych. Problem ten nie stanowił do tej pory przedmiotu zarówno studiów literaturowych jak i badań empirycznych. Materiałami źródłowymi opracowania będą dostępna literatura przedmiotu, własne analizy oparte na źródłach wtórnych, a także badania empiryczne realizowane wśród pasażerów.

Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT zwróciły się w grudniu 2012 r. o pomoc publiczną. Zgodnie z prawem europejskim, pomoc jest dozwolona, jeśli jest zgodna z wytycznymi w sprawie pomocy publicznej. W przypadkach pomocy publicznej Komisja otwiera postępowanie, mające na celu zbadanie czy zostały spełnione warunki prawne. Jeśli stwierdzi ona, że warunki zostały spełnione, wyraża zgodę na pomoc. W przeciwnym razie nakazuje, aby pomoc została zwrócona, co oznacza w praktyce upadłość podmiotu. Ostatnio Komisja badała przypadki pomocy publicznej udzielonej czeskim liniom lotniczych ČSA i węgierskim liniom lotniczym Malév, które zakończyły się odmiennie. W drugiej połowie 2009 r. ČSA stały się praktycznie niewypłacalne. Czeski rząd zdecydował o udzieleniu pożyczki. Po przeprowadzeniu postępowania wszczętego na podstawie art. 108(2) traktatu o funkcjonowaniu UE (TFUE), Komisja uznała, że pożyczka nie była pomocą publiczną. ČSA nie były jednak w stanie spłacić pożyczki i władze Czech zdecydowały o zamianie pożyczki na kapitał spółki, co zostało uznane za pomoc publiczną. Komisja zbadała sytuację ekonomiczną spółki i plan restrukturyzacji i uznała, że pomoc była zgodna z zasadami rynku wewnętrznego. W przypadku pomocy udzielonej Malév, Komisja uznała, że nie zostały spełnione żadne warunki zgodności z wytycznymi i zdecydowała, że pomoc musi być zwrócona, przypieczętowało to losy węgierskiego przewoźnika. Celem opracowania była analiza ostatnich przypadków pomocy publicznej udzielonej przewoźnikom lotniczym z Europy Wschodniej oraz procedur prawnych podejmowanych przez Komisję. Analiza tych dwóch przypadków dostarcza okazji do wyciągnięcia wniosków, które mogą być użyteczne dla polskich władz i kierownictwa LOT.
The Polish Airlines LOT called in December 2012 for State aid. Under the EU law a restructuring aid is allowed when it respects conditions provided in the EU rescue and restructuring aid guidelines. In order to verify whether the measures notified are in line with the EU law, the Commission opens a formal investigation procedure. If legal criteria are met, the Commission approves the aid measures. When the Commission considers that conditions for aid are incompatible with the internal market, it rules that the aid should be recovered from the beneficiary, which in practice means a bankruptcy of the company. Recently, the Commission has investigated State aid measures granted to Czech Airlines (ČSA) and to Hungarian Airlines Malév, which ended differently. In the second half of 2009 ČSA became practically insolvent. The Czech government decided to provide ČSA with a loan. The Commission initiated an investigation under Article 108(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The Commission concluded that the loan did not involve State aid. However, ČSA was not able to repay the loan and the Czech authorities decided to swap the debt into the equity, which was qualified by the Commission as State aid. The Commission analysed the economic position of the company and restructuring plan and found that the aid was compatible with the internal market. In the case of State aid for Malév, the Commission found that none of the compatibility conditions were met and decided that the aid had to be recovered. The decision was fatal for the Hungarian carrier. The aim of the paper is to study the last cases of State aid granted to carriers from the East Europe and legal procedures undertaken by the Commission. An analysis of these two cases provide an opportunity to draw lessons that could be useful for the Polish authorities and the management of LOT.
