Opis:
The paper offers a sketchy reconstruction of axiomatic foundations of Zalta's theory of abstract objects. The theory is based on Ernst Mally's distinction between two types of predication: an exemplification of properties and an encoding of properties. The author shows how the theory in question could be used to reconstruct in a satisfying way many other metaphysical theories e.g. the theory of Platonic Forms, the theory of situations, the theory of possible worlds. The paper also provides several critical comments to some presumptions and consequences of the analyzed metaphysical doctrine.

Operator, ze względu na który badamy niezmienniczość aproksymacji, jest liniowy.

The operator in regard to which we study the invariability of the approximation is linear.''

The author reviews results (without proofs) from the theory of minimal projective operators. As he remarks, an excellent introduction to this theory is the survey paper by E. W. Cheney and K. H. Price [Approximation theory (Proc. Sympos., Lancaster, 1969), pp. 261–289, Academic Press, London, 1970; MR0265842]. The author is motivated by a number of papers in this topic published after 1970, bringing essentially new results, e.g., an existence theorem for the minimal operators in the class of all projective operators from a linear normed space onto its subspace due to P. D. Morris and Cheney [J. Reine Angew. Math. 270 (1974), 61–76; MR0358188]. The paper consists of the following chapters: (0) Introduction; (1) Projective operators; (2) Fundamental properties of minimal projective operators; (3) Existence and characterization of minimal projective operators; (4) Some polynomial projective operators in the space C[−1,1]; References (45 items).

In this article, we introduce a new static analysis for numerical accuracy. We address the problem of determining the minimal accuracy on the inputs and on the intermediary results of a program containing foating-point computations in order to ensure a desired accuracy on the outputs. The main approach is to combine a forward and a backward static analysis, done by abstract interpretation. The backward analysis computes the minimal accuracy needed for the inputs and intermediary results of the program in order to ensure a desired accuracy on the results, specied by the user. In practice, the information collected by our analysis may help to optimize the formats used to represent the values stored in the variables of the program or to select the appropriate sensors. To illustrate our analysis, we have shown a prototype example with experimental results.

Opis:
Although a relatively short text, the abstract of a paper summarizes the most important issues raised in the main text. The abstract is, at least initially, the key text on which journal editors, reviewers and eventually readers form their initial judgement on the overall quality of the full manuscript. Therefore, it is essential to execute this step of the writing process well. In this article, we discuss the purpose of an abstract, why it is important, and how to write a good abstract. Increasingly, journal abstracts are structured to follow the IMRAD format (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). We provide examples of well written and badly written abstracts, with explanatory notes, to help readers understand the key points that need to be addressed and mistakes that should be avoided. Since international abstracts are generally written in English, preparing an abstract can be especially challenging for researchers who are not native speakers of English. We close this article with general linguistic advice, paying particular attention to key terms and word choice than can meaningfully express an author’s intention in a concise way. The points raised in this article will help authors improve their scientific writing and enable their findings to be expressed with clarity.

In this paper, I argue that Stróżewski sees the meaning of artwork in getting closer the essence of things, in grasping their eidos (of their ideal Gestalt), in a specific, Platonic sense. Stróżewski's theory could, therefore, justify not only the representational forms of art, but also the "pure" objects and colours of abstract art, and even the very optical structure of new art media. On the other hand, his objectivist approach to beauty as an ontological value is at odds with a pragmatic view of the relationship between artwork and receiver, as shown by the disagreement with Roman Ingarden.

The paper proposes a method to cover the world of web services with a uniform semantics, possibly simple but enabling to arrange complex flows of service invocations. The flows are built according to fully declarative user's intentions, specified in a language common for the descriptions of services and for the query. In the approach we model the world of services and of the subjects they operate on using a uniform knowledge database and an objectoriented manner. The current work describes the first phase of the composition: making an abstract plan, i.e., giving an answer how (with what types of services) the required effect can be obtained. The problem of creating a plan is converted to building a specialized graph.

The domain of motion events is widely used to metaphorically describe abstract concepts, particularly emotional states. Why motion events are effective for describing abstract concepts is the question that this article intends to answer. In the literature of the field, several reasons have been suggested to be behind the suitability of motion events for describing these concepts, such as high concreteness of motion events, their high imageability, and the ability of comprehender to simultaneously imagine components of motion events. This article suggests that motion events are particularly effective for metaphorical description of those domains which have the feature of dynamic change over a period of time. This is particularly the case with emotional states. Since changes in emotions take place throughout a period of time, they could best be described by motion events which have the same feature. In other words, the continuous change in emotions is understood in terms of continuous change in the location of a moving object in the 3D space. Based on the arguments of embodied theories of cognition, it would be no surprise to see the involvement of similar areas of the brain in understanding emotions and motions.

The theory of embodiment (Lakoff and Johnson 2003; Gibbs et al. 2004) explains the origin of meaning by postulating that thought is influenced by sensorimotor experience (Robbins and Aydede 2009). However, the relation between the body, mind and environment is not unidirectional. Not only do we derive information from the world, but we are also able to use it as an extension of the mind through epistemic actions, strategies that minimize the cognitive load by offloading it onto the environment (Kirsh and Maglio 1994). This paper investigates the potential of gesture as epistemic action. 12 blind and severely visually impaired children and young adults, as well as a control group of 7 young adults were interviewed for the purpose of the study. Participants were asked to explain a set of abstract and concrete concepts while their speech and gestures were recorded. If gesture indeed plays a role in reducing the mental load by externalizing thought, more gestures should be produced for concepts that are more difficult to describe (in this case: abstract, intangible concepts). Qualitative data analysis, as well as simple statistical analyses of gesture type, number and gesture per word rates show that abstract concepts do not generate more gestures, but do prompt blind and visually impaired speakers to use simulation gestures. These gestures constitute reenactments of situations associated with a given concept by the respondent. They are also thought to confirm the embodied cognition hypothesis (Hostetter and Alibali 2008). A number of examples demonstrates that abstract concepts in blind children are strongly grounded in their experience of real-world situations. Findings suggest that gesture is not merely a tool for communication, but a way of extending the capabilities of the mind.

The aim of this work is to discuss the essence of the problem and to present the most interesting attempts to solve the aforementioned challenge. To this end, we will begin by characterizing the approach of researchers in embodied cognition to the study of language. In the following section, we will look at research data showing differences in the meaning-making processes for abstract and concrete concepts by natural cognitive systems. This section will be followed by a presentation of selected strategies of addressing the problem of abstractness in the research paradigm under discussion. We will conclude with some observations about a grounded and embodied model of language as a whole.

The paper presents a new approach based on genetic algorithms to the abstract planning problem, which is the first stage of the web service composition problem. An abstract plan is defined as an equivalence class of sequences of service types that satisfy a user query. Intuitively, two sequences are equivalent if they are composed of the same service types, but not necessarily occurring in the same order. The objective of our genetic algorithm (GA) is to return representatives of abstract plans without generating all the equivalent sequences. The paper presents experimental results compared with the results obtained from SMT-solver, which show that GA finds solutions for very large sets of service types in a reasonable time.

The thesis of the paper is the statement that in theoretical assumptions of abstract painting the Platonic conception of art is to be found. It is an interesting coincidence, especially that it is independent and does not arise from inspiration of abstractionist painters by Plato’s philosophy or their reference to his conception of art. Plato, likewise, did not predict a development of such an art movement but despite that, in theoretical foundations of abstract painting the same truth cognitive assumptions can be identified as in Plato’s conception of art. They define its essence as well as function and value. They are also expression of Plato’s negative attitude to imitative painting.
In this paper we consider some classes of abstract discontinuous games, for which the games possessing essential Berge equilibrium are the generic case. We extend the essential Berge equilibrium result from Deghdak (2014) to general abstract games.

Opis:
This paper aims to integrate logical operators into frame-based semantics. Frames are semantic graphs that allow lexical meaning to be captured in a fine-grained way but that do not come with a natural way to integrate logical operators such as quantifiers. The approach we propose stems from the observation that modal logic is a powerful tool for describing relational structures, including frames. We use its hybrid logic extension in order to incorporate quantification and thereby allow for inference and reasoning. We integrate our approach into a type theoretic compositional semantics, formulated within Abstract Categorial Grammars. We also show how the key ingredients of hybrid logic, nominals and binders, can be used to model semantic coercion, such as the one induced by the begin predicate. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed syntax-semantics interface, all the examples can be run and tested with the Abstract Categorial Grammar development toolkit.

Opis:
This article looks at the semantic space of abstract and concrete concepts from the perspective of distributed models of conceptual representations. It focuses on abstract metaphorical classes and the mechanisms through which these concepts are processed. When the metaphor X is a Y is understood, X is included in the abstract metaphorical class of Y. This metaphorical class is abstract because the most of semantic features of Y are filtered out through a suppressive-oriented mode of processing. It is suggested that abstract metaphorical classes of living things are usually defined by a single or a very small set of semantic features. Therefore, such metaphorical classes are highly abstract. On the other hand, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things are defined by a relatively larger cluster of semantic features. Therefore, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things have a relatively higher degree of concreteness compared to those of living things. In other words, abstract metaphorical classes of living things and nonliving things are rather different in terms of nature and the structure of semantic space.
