Opis:
The paper offers a sketchy reconstruction of axiomatic foundations of Zalta's theory of abstract objects. The theory is based on Ernst Mally's distinction between two types of predication: an exemplification of properties and an encoding of properties. The author shows how the theory in question could be used to reconstruct in a satisfying way many other metaphysical theories e.g. the theory of Platonic Forms, the theory of situations, the theory of possible worlds. The paper also provides several critical comments to some presumptions and consequences of the analyzed metaphysical doctrine.

In this article, we introduce a new static analysis for numerical accuracy. We address the problem of determining the minimal accuracy on the inputs and on the intermediary results of a program containing foating-point computations in order to ensure a desired accuracy on the outputs. The main approach is to combine a forward and a backward static analysis, done by abstract interpretation. The backward analysis computes the minimal accuracy needed for the inputs and intermediary results of the program in order to ensure a desired accuracy on the results, specied by the user. In practice, the information collected by our analysis may help to optimize the formats used to represent the values stored in the variables of the program or to select the appropriate sensors. To illustrate our analysis, we have shown a prototype example with experimental results.

The operator in regard to which we study the invariability of the approximation is linear.''

The author reviews results (without proofs) from the theory of minimal projective operators. As he remarks, an excellent introduction to this theory is the survey paper by E. W. Cheney and K. H. Price [Approximation theory (Proc. Sympos., Lancaster, 1969), pp. 261–289, Academic Press, London, 1970; MR0265842]. The author is motivated by a number of papers in this topic published after 1970, bringing essentially new results, e.g., an existence theorem for the minimal operators in the class of all projective operators from a linear normed space onto its subspace due to P. D. Morris and Cheney [J. Reine Angew. Math. 270 (1974), 61–76; MR0358188]. The paper consists of the following chapters: (0) Introduction; (1) Projective operators; (2) Fundamental properties of minimal projective operators; (3) Existence and characterization of minimal projective operators; (4) Some polynomial projective operators in the space C[−1,1]; References (45 items).

Opis:
Although a relatively short text, the abstract of a paper summarizes the most important issues raised in the main text. The abstract is, at least initially, the key text on which journal editors, reviewers and eventually readers form their initial judgement on the overall quality of the full manuscript. Therefore, it is essential to execute this step of the writing process well. In this article, we discuss the purpose of an abstract, why it is important, and how to write a good abstract. Increasingly, journal abstracts are structured to follow the IMRAD format (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). We provide examples of well written and badly written abstracts, with explanatory notes, to help readers understand the key points that need to be addressed and mistakes that should be avoided. Since international abstracts are generally written in English, preparing an abstract can be especially challenging for researchers who are not native speakers of English. We close this article with general linguistic advice, paying particular attention to key terms and word choice than can meaningfully express an author’s intention in a concise way. The points raised in this article will help authors improve their scientific writing and enable their findings to be expressed with clarity.

In this paper, I argue that Stróżewski sees the meaning of artwork in getting closer the essence of things, in grasping their eidos (of their ideal Gestalt), in a specific, Platonic sense. Stróżewski's theory could, therefore, justify not only the representational forms of art, but also the "pure" objects and colours of abstract art, and even the very optical structure of new art media. On the other hand, his objectivist approach to beauty as an ontological value is at odds with a pragmatic view of the relationship between artwork and receiver, as shown by the disagreement with Roman Ingarden.

The paper proposes a method to cover the world of web services with a uniform semantics, possibly simple but enabling to arrange complex flows of service invocations. The flows are built according to fully declarative user's intentions, specified in a language common for the descriptions of services and for the query. In the approach we model the world of services and of the subjects they operate on using a uniform knowledge database and an objectoriented manner. The current work describes the first phase of the composition: making an abstract plan, i.e., giving an answer how (with what types of services) the required effect can be obtained. The problem of creating a plan is converted to building a specialized graph.

The domain of motion events is widely used to metaphorically describe abstract concepts, particularly emotional states. Why motion events are effective for describing abstract concepts is the question that this article intends to answer. In the literature of the field, several reasons have been suggested to be behind the suitability of motion events for describing these concepts, such as high concreteness of motion events, their high imageability, and the ability of comprehender to simultaneously imagine components of motion events. This article suggests that motion events are particularly effective for metaphorical description of those domains which have the feature of dynamic change over a period of time. This is particularly the case with emotional states. Since changes in emotions take place throughout a period of time, they could best be described by motion events which have the same feature. In other words, the continuous change in emotions is understood in terms of continuous change in the location of a moving object in the 3D space. Based on the arguments of embodied theories of cognition, it would be no surprise to see the involvement of similar areas of the brain in understanding emotions and motions.

The theory of embodiment (Lakoff and Johnson 2003; Gibbs et al. 2004) explains the origin of meaning by postulating that thought is influenced by sensorimotor experience (Robbins and Aydede 2009). However, the relation between the body, mind and environment is not unidirectional. Not only do we derive information from the world, but we are also able to use it as an extension of the mind through epistemic actions, strategies that minimize the cognitive load by offloading it onto the environment (Kirsh and Maglio 1994). This paper investigates the potential of gesture as epistemic action. 12 blind and severely visually impaired children and young adults, as well as a control group of 7 young adults were interviewed for the purpose of the study. Participants were asked to explain a set of abstract and concrete concepts while their speech and gestures were recorded. If gesture indeed plays a role in reducing the mental load by externalizing thought, more gestures should be produced for concepts that are more difficult to describe (in this case: abstract, intangible concepts). Qualitative data analysis, as well as simple statistical analyses of gesture type, number and gesture per word rates show that abstract concepts do not generate more gestures, but do prompt blind and visually impaired speakers to use simulation gestures. These gestures constitute reenactments of situations associated with a given concept by the respondent. They are also thought to confirm the embodied cognition hypothesis (Hostetter and Alibali 2008). A number of examples demonstrates that abstract concepts in blind children are strongly grounded in their experience of real-world situations. Findings suggest that gesture is not merely a tool for communication, but a way of extending the capabilities of the mind.

To this end, we will begin by characterizing the approach of researchers in embodied cognition to the study of language. In the following section, we will look at research data showing differences in the meaning-making processes for abstract and concrete concepts by natural cognitive systems. This section will be followed by a presentation of selected strategies of addressing the problem of abstractness in the research paradigm under discussion. We will conclude with some observations about a grounded and embodied model of language as a whole.

The paper presents a new approach based on genetic algorithms to the abstract planning problem, which is the first stage of the web service composition problem. An abstract plan is defined as an equivalence class of sequences of service types that satisfy a user query. Intuitively, two sequences are equivalent if they are composed of the same service types, but not necessarily occurring in the same order. The objective of our genetic algorithm (GA) is to return representatives of abstract plans without generating all the equivalent sequences. The paper presents experimental results compared with the results obtained from SMT-solver, which show that GA finds solutions for very large sets of service types in a reasonable time.

The thesis of the paper is the statement that in theoretical assumptions of abstract painting the Platonic conception of art is to be found. It is an interesting coincidence, especially that it is independent and does not arise from inspiration of abstractionist painters by Plato’s philosophy or their reference to his conception of art. Plato, likewise, did not predict a development of such an art movement but despite that, in theoretical foundations of abstract painting the same truth cognitive assumptions can be identified as in Plato’s conception of art. They define its essence as well as function and value. They are also expression of Plato’s negative attitude to imitative painting.
This paper aims to integrate logical operators into frame-based semantics. Frames are semantic graphs that allow lexical meaning to be captured in a fine-grained way but that do not come with a natural way to integrate logical operators such as quantifiers. The approach we propose stems from the observation that modal logic is a powerful tool for describing relational structures, including frames. We use its hybrid logic extension in order to incorporate quantification and thereby allow for inference and reasoning. We integrate our approach into a type theoretic compositional semantics, formulated within Abstract Categorial Grammars. We also show how the key ingredients of hybrid logic, nominals and binders, can be used to model semantic coercion, such as the one induced by the begin predicate. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed syntax-semantics interface, all the examples can be run and tested with the Abstract Categorial Grammar development toolkit.

This article looks at the semantic space of abstract and concrete concepts from the perspective of distributed models of conceptual representations. It focuses on abstract metaphorical classes and the mechanisms through which these concepts are processed. When the metaphor X is a Y is understood, X is included in the abstract metaphorical class of Y. This metaphorical class is abstract because the most of semantic features of Y are filtered out through a suppressive-oriented mode of processing. It is suggested that abstract metaphorical classes of living things are usually defined by a single or a very small set of semantic features. Therefore, such metaphorical classes are highly abstract. On the other hand, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things are defined by a relatively larger cluster of semantic features. Therefore, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things have a relatively higher degree of concreteness compared to those of living things. In other words, abstract metaphorical classes of living things and nonliving things are rather different in terms of nature and the structure of semantic space.

About the MeetingThis year the Annual Meeting off the German Society of Travel Medicine took place in Bremerhaven, September 16th to 18th. This traditional harbour town where thousands of Germans were embarking hundred years ago facing an uncertain future, the so-called “climate house” (an exihibtion about several aspects of the world’s climate) and the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Arctic Research were a fantastic setting for the meeting’s motto “traveling under extreme conditions”. After a brillant introduction by Stefan Kröpelin about research in the Sahara two weeks away from the next pharmacy and a fascinating lecture by Eberhard Kohlberg how to organize expeditions to Antarctica and how to work and to live there several lecturers illuminated a wide field of travel medicine in more or less extreme conditions.

This paper discussed a case study of a 15-year-old girl who had had a hemorrhagic stroke, caused by arteriovenous malformation. A brain arteriovenous malformation is a defect in the vascular system, a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. The patient attended regularly neuropsychological rehabilitation and several various therapeutic methods were applied. A neuropsychological diagnosis was performed before and after therapy. The first assessment showed some cognitive disturbances: difficulties in the organization of memorized material, difficulties in maintaining attention and deficits in abstract thinking. Furthermore there were observed emotional problems: depression and high perfectionism. The patient participated in individual therapy lasting one year. Neuropsychological rehabilitation took into consideration the personal psychological resources and cognitive and emotional difficulties. As a result, there was observed an improvement in consequent cognitive functions: organization of memorized material, working memory, abstract thinking and verbal fluency. The emotional state was stable. It is important that the therapy should be holistic and includes all aspects of the patient’s functioning, which may have an influence on the final result of rehabilitation. One of the most important aims of the therapy psychologist was an acceptance of the disease. The cognitive tasks can also include psychological and therapeutic exercises.

The book by Voloshinov and Bakhtin is considered as the attempt to construct the Marx’s linguistics after the Revolution of 1917. The authors present the antinomy between the ‘individual subjectivism’ and ‘abstract objectivism’, or in other words, between the two opposite approaches to language as a specific object of scientific inquiry. The two currents are observed from the perspective of the general anti-Saussurean movement in Soviet linguistics and literary studies of the late 1920s.

The article investigates the problems of scheduling methods for making up the schedules for medical care institutions, with a view to further optimization the conditions and improvement the patient care. It is noted that a key step in the operation of medical institutions is the scheduling stage process. Depending on the specifics of a particular institution, work plans take different forms, mostly turning into a timetable. It is established that there are a number of scheduling methods, ranging from manual planning and mathematical programming with limitations, ending with the use of artificial intelligence. Most methods consist of two or more stages and initially require the construction of the very schedule that satisfies the strict limitations of the institution functioning. At a later stage the scheduling optimization of one or more criteria is regarded. The types of finite-state automata are analyzed and, with their use, developed a method for constructing the supporting schedules for clinics. An algorithm of finite-state machines for clinic schedule construction is established.

To this end, 200 abstracts from peer-reviewed Linguistics journals that are indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus were compared with 200 abstracts extracted from peer-reviewed Linguistics journals that are not indexed in either of these two highly ranked databases. Using Hyland’s (2000) model of move analysis and Hyland’s (2005) taxonomy of metadiscourse, the study reveals that abstracts in less prestigious journals typically include longer moves for introduction, purpose and method while abstracts in more prestigious journals include significantly lengthier findings. As for metadiscourse, abstracts in less prestigious journals employ significantly more transitions, frame markers and evidentials whereas the abstracts in more prestigious journals exhibit higher use of code glosses, hedges, boosters and self-mentions. The results are interpreted with reference to the types of journals, and pedagogical implications and new research directions are proposed.

We first investigate basic properties of an α-times integrated C-semigroup which may not be exponentially bounded. We then characterize the generator A of an exponentially bounded α-times integrated C-semigroup, either in terms of its Laplace transforms or in terms of existence of a unique solution of the above abstract Cauchy problem for every x in $(λ-A)^{-1}C(X)$.

Chess is a board game, in the Middle Ages referred to as a tabula. During the long way it took since its origin in India in the 6th century until modern times, the subsequent communities left their own, inimitable cultural marks. In India, chess had a deeply mystical nature; Persians used chess to picture the world as a battlefield; Arabs systematised many concepts and took note of the mathematical aspect; Europe made use of chess to define rules that should apply to an ideal society. This shows a perfect understanding of the balance on the chessboard, the mutual dependencies and consistent actions leading to success – both when playing and creating social life. Medieval literature provides an excellent basis for studies of the intertwining cultural trends and describing the reality. In the literature, elements based on playing chess are oftentimes among the postulated modes of education. However, the ideas encountered by the potential users of chess tournaments were best communicated by the figures and the accumulated plethora of notions. An analysis of the changes affecting jackstraws at an early stage of the game’s adaptation in Europe and other territories which took over chess as cultural models, leads to a conclusion that the material from the 11th-12th centuries that comes from Polish collections matches many Latin trends and shows considerable knowledge thereof.

Modern linguistic research focuses on phenomena that simultaneously affect different branches of science. Abstract nouns, which lie at the intersection of language, speech and thought and a person’s unique ability to generalize, are examples of exactly such phenomena. The grammatical form of the plural, which is a structural basis of language, is increasingly prevalent in the general grammatical theory of language development. The meaning of abstract vocabulary and its plural forms poses researchers with questions that are not always unambiguous: what are the relations of words in a sentence, how do they agree, and what is the participation of the plural in the formation of new lexical meanings and new plural words. The article is devoted to these issues, as well as to the comparative analysis of abstract plural nouns in modern French and Ukrainian. We review the peculiarities of the functioning of abstract plural nouns in typologically dissimilar languages (analytically-inflected French and synthetically-inflecte Ukrainian). We also analyse the semantic transformations of abstract substantives, and we illustrate on a specifi language material their potential ability to convey expressiveness in artistic speech. Examples from literature have made it possible to consider the semantic alterations of abstract plural nouns and, in particular, the number of abstract nouns which appear as the dominant of their semantic modifications. The analysis of works of fiction by French authors, most notably, Françoise Sagan, and their Ukrainian translations, helped to identify the uniqueness of the functioning of singular and plural forms of abstract nouns.

This paper explores the nature of interlanguage (IL) as a developing system with a focus on the abstract lexical structure underlying IL construction. The developing system of IL is assumed to be ‘composite’ in that in second language acquisition (SLA) several linguistic systems are in contact, each of which may contribute different amounts to the developing system. The lexical structure is assumed to be ‘abstract’ in that the mental lexicon contains abstract elements called ‘lemmas’, which contain information about individual lexemes, and lemmas in the bilingual mental lexicon are language-specific and are in contact in IL production. Based on the research findings, it concludes that language transfer in IL production should be understood as lemma transfer of the learner's first language (L1) lexical structure at three abstract levels: lexical-conceptual structure, predicate-argument structure, and morphological realization patterns, and IL construction is driven by an incompletely acquired abstract lexical structure of a target language (TL) item.

Metaphor simply is defined as a verbal construct with two referents: one literal, based on the ordinary, concrete meanings of the word or words involved, and the other metaphorical, that is one derived from an implicit analogy between the literal referent and some other phenomenon, usually an abstraction that is implied, but not named. The aim of this paper is a description of the neuropsychology of metaphors in patients awakened from post-traumatic coma. A group of 34 patients awakened from post-traumatic coma and treated at the Reintegrative and Teaching Centre of the Polish Neuropsychological Society, Poland during the period 2017- 2019 participated in this study. This group included 15 women and 17 men, with an average age of 31.2 ± 8.72 years; as a group, the women were somewhat older (32.6 ± 9.79 vs. 31.1 ± 9.18). We recorded the patients’ utterances with the use of video record- ings of open-ended conversations, and made occasional efforts to introduce proverbs, idioms, and other metaphors into their conversation, but this was done on an impromptu basis. The analysis of recordings of 100 randomly selected statements obtained from each patient revealed the presence of 4 types of errors: (1) non-comprehension, i.e. the listener’s inability to comprehend the meaning of the metaphor used by the speaker, as indicated by the lack of an adequate response, an expression of puzzlement, or a question as to the meaning of the metaphor used by the speaker; (2) concretization, which occurs when the listener reacts to the literal meaning of the word, phrase, or sentence, rather than its metaphorical referent; (3) misapplication, when the speaker uses a familiar metaphor in an inappropriate context; (4) the use of incomprehensible or bizarre metaphors by the speaker, so that the intended meaning is difficult or impossible for the listener to ascertain. On many occasions, however, the gist of the metaphor emerged at some later point in the discourse, despite the surface problems. It was found that the TBI patients we studied showed a marked tendency in spontaneous conversation to concretize or misunderstand the metaphors used by others, and to use inappropriate or bizarre metaphors in their own speech. On many occasions, however, the gist of the metaphor emerged at some later point in the discourse, despite the surface problems.

Language is the primary form of communication. Its role encompasses both the description of real reality and the definition of certain materially non-existent states. With social development, the burden of discourse is increasingly shifting from the physical to the metaphysical realm. Language becomes a tool for creating reality. The emergence of any concept serves to create a linguistic reality that facilitates understanding of the surrounding reality. In the case of abstract concepts, the creative function of language is particularly important. We can distinguish concepts that by their extensiveness include components of real states, such as love, evil, good. However, there are concepts whose creation was dictated only by the desire to justify the institution, such as dignity. Abstract concepts perform many social functions. Such a wide participation of abstract concepts in key areas of social life poses numerous threats to community functioning, development and peace, including by inhibiting scientific progress, ossification of institutional structures or breakdown of social ties. The purpose of the article is to raise awareness of the essence of given concepts in society and on the necessity of limiting the use of these concepts in key spheres of social life, such as law, politics and economics.

We study the abstract boundary value problem defined in terms of the Green identity and introduce the concept of Weyl operator function M(·) that agrees with other definitions found in the current literature. In typical cases of problems arising from the multidimensional partial equations of mathematical physics the function M(·) takes values in the set of unbounded densely defined operators acting on the auxiliary boundary space. Exact formulae are obtained and essential properties of M(·) are studied. In particular, we consider boundary problems defined by various boundary conditions and justify the well known procedure that reduces such problems to the "equation on the boundary" involving the Weyl function, prove an analogue of the Borg-Levinson theorem, and link our results to the classical theory of extensions of symmetric operators.

Opis:
On the Art is a polemical treatise in the Hippocratic corpus that has been dated to 450–400 Bce. As a polemical work, the author defends the existence of medicine against detractors. i argue that the author employs two arguments for scientific realism in defense of medicine that are among the earliest known. First, i situate the work in the context of the sophistic movement and the nomos vs. physis debate. Second, i analyze the two arguments in On the Art ii, and i argue by contraposing spatiotemporalist, constructivist, and realist interpretations of the passage that the author grapples with the semantic stretch of the word εἶδος. thereafter, i propose the arguments are best understood as indispensability arguments in which medical realism is defended in order to explain clinical practice.

This essay analyses the dialogue between automatism and late surrealism on the color red, with a focus on the intensity shared by painting and literature. The starting point is a collective prose poem by André Breton, Élisa Breton, and Benjamin Péret. This poem, « Riopelle », written for an exhibition of Jean-Paul Riopelle’s automatist paintings in 1949, is included in Breton’s Le Surréalisme et la peinture.

Opis:
This article looks at metaphor aptness from the perspective of the class-inclusion model of metaphor comprehension and those models that assume a componential nature for the meanings of concepts. When the metaphor X is a Y is processed, the concept of X is included in a metaphorical class that is represented by Y, which is usually the most typical member of the metaphorical class. Degree of saliency of the defining feature in the vehicle and the extent to which this feature matches a relevant dimension of topic is the key factor in the degree of aptness of the metaphor. Degree of aptness becomes more complex in those metaphors that describe an abstract concept in terms of another concept. These metaphors include X into a metaphorical class through the mediation of those concepts that are associated to the abstract concept. If the associated concepts have a high degree of typicality in the metaphorical class, they could be better mediators for including the abstract concept into the metaphorical class. The variations of abstract concepts across individuals and their dependency on contexts and cultures could explain why such metaphors may have different degrees of aptness for different people.

Opis:
Abstract (sometimes called summary) of a scientific publication is a brief text that contains keywords. It is one of the elements of a bibliographic description in the bibliographic database iSybislaw – a modern information retrieval system. In the paper definitions of terms such as abstract, annotation and summary along with their constitutive elements are presented. A characteristics of such short texts inserted in the iSybislaw database in the fields Abstract and Abstract 2 is also given. Based on some examples excerpted from the iSybislaw system a typology of short texts, which are elements of the database bibliographic description, is proposed. The material allows to list three kinds of texts that are being used in the iSybislaw database: annotations, abstracts and biographic annotations.

Abstract Categorial Grammars
Opis:
We present a model of the syntax-semantics interface for Tree-Adjoining Grammars (TAGs). It is based on the encoding of TAGs within the framework of Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACGs). This encoding relies on a functional interpretation of the substitution and adjunction operations of TAGs. In ACGs, the abstract terms representing derivation trees are full-fledged objects of the grammar. These terms are mapped onto logical formulas representing the semantic interpretation of natural language expressions that TAGs can analyze. Because of the reversibility properties of ACGs, this provides a way to parse and generate with the same TAG-encoded grammar. We propose several analyses, including for long-distance dependencies, quantification, control and raising verbs, and subordinate clauses. We also show how this encoding easily extends to other phenomena such as idioms or scope ambiguities. All the lexical data for theses modellings are provided and can be run with the ACG toolkit, a software package dedicated to the development of ACGs that can use these grammars both for parsing and generation.

This publication shows the potential of pre-school age children to understand and use allegory, focusing specifically on the core of the ability to interpret the allegory of proverbs and sayings. A connection between comparison skills and allegory interpretation skills has been statistically proved, confirming that the image-based way of thinking is typical for the ages under research and allowing us to define visualization as a principal stage in the process of getting to the meaning of allegory. The publication also gives statistical arguments which support a connection between the development of the ability for abstract thinking and allegory interpretation skills, i.e. a child with better-developed abstract thinking ability will display a higher capacity for interpreting allegorical meanings.

Vibrating 3-dimensional mechanical systems are described by hybrid graphs. By dividing the hybrid graph into a tree and associated co-tree it is possible to describe in terms of matrices: across-flow-variables, stiffness and flexibility. The application of the formalism of graphs makes it possible to analyze mechanical systems in terms of dynamic characteristic and trajectory motion of determinate points.

Opis:
In 1952 Witold Czachórski posited as a general principle of Polish contract law that legal actions leading of a transfer of wealth require for their validity a proper cause; the rule was construed as a mandatory one and precluded the creation of abstract obligations unless expressly permitted by law. Czachórski’s theory was underpinned by an in-depth analysis of the entire body of civil law, as well as axiological considerations that emphasized the need to control contractual fairness (Section 1). After 40 years of largely uncontroverted acceptance the rule was abruptly abandoned by the Supreme Court on grounds of freedom of contract (Section 2). Despite its fundamental nature, this change was not accompanied by any in-depth discussion in legal doctrine (Section 3). While unsatisfactory on a theoretical level, it seems in retrospect that this was, at a time of systemic transformation to a liberal market economy, a pragmatic and perhaps inevitable approach that served to further the newly re-established principle of freedom of contract. Paradoxically, however, with the contemporary shift to a more control-oriented approach to freedom of contract it would not be entirely surprising to see a rebirth of the role of cause and of Czachórski’s theory some time in the future (Section 4).

The article is devoted to the subject of building the intellectual capital of enterprises using the competences of employees regarding their ability to use methods based on abstract thinking. The starting point was the question whether the contemporary employer needs employees who can mainly perform real tasks or are able to apply abstract thinking to solve problems occurring in the enterprise. Against this background, it was also tried to determine what role IT tools can play in this situation. For the purposes of the article, research was carried out with a group of employers who spoke about the needs of their companies in the area of creating their intellectual capital, demand for employee competences in the field of abstract thinking and their creativity, and also to determine what role ICT tools can play
