Opis:
It is very important for an aging society as well as for the elderly themselves that seniors are as active as possible in old age. Older activities bring a higher quality of life for seniors and save money for society. Today, the concept of active aging is an important part of coping with the aging process in developed countries. The work emphasizes the principles of active aging of seniors, based on the National Program of Active Aging for 2014-2020, while appealing to the availability, quality and financial sustainability of social services.

Opis:
One of the leading models of successful aging is the life-span model of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) developed by Baltes & Baltes (1990). SOC strategy outlines the best adapting mechanisms to age-related changes and its usefulness was proved in many empirical studies. For the first time the present study examines how SOC is associated with subjective indicators of successful aging in Polish seniors. Three variables served as outcome measures of successful aging: positive emotions (measured by PANAS), satisfaction of life (SWLS) and absence of feelings of loneliness (Loneliness Scale de Jong Gierveld). All scales used were in Polish version. Polish adaptation of the SOC Questionnaire was accomplished by the first author. 80 elders (between 64–85 years old) participated in the study. The results indicate that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between SOC strategy and widely used measures of successful aging which confirms the data of previous authors and means that SOC strategy does not depend of socio-cultural context.

Purpose – The article presents a proposal for a measure of the similarity of regions in terms of the structure of the elderly population. Research method – Using the proposed measure, the similarity of population structures aged 60 and above was assessed for the regions of Poland in 2017, where the age groups: 60-74, 75-84 and 85 plus were defined as components of the structure. Results – The research results demonstrate that Poland’s voivodeships differ with respect to the structure of people aged 60 and above. The spatial polarization of the country with respect to the components of the structure of an elderly population can be observed. Originality /value – Identification of the regional differentiation of the situation in terms of the size and age structure of the elderly population can be helpful in planning activities within the silver economy policy adapted to the situation in each region.

The paper describes the state of population aging in Poland and one voivodeship (Kujawsko-pomorskie) in the early 21st c., as well as showing how the process will develop in the next future, limited by the beginning of the 2030s. Using the economic and biological age groups to describe the structure of popula- tion with respect to aging, we need to note that the shares of age groups are similar in the voivodeship and in the country, both today and throughout the Central Statistical Of- fice’s most recent population projection. The similar shares of the working age group and retirement age group in the analysed areas translate into almost identical potential support ratios for the country and the mentioned administrative unit and into their future trends. Population aging considered in the cross section of urban and rural areas makes it evident that the process consequences (e.g. for the labour market, the social policy) will affect the urban population more strongly than the rural population.

Opis:
Since aging is primarily the result of a failure of maintenance and repair mechanisms, various approaches are being developed in order to stimulate these pathways and modulate the process of aging. One such approach, termed hormesis, involves challenging cells and organisms by mild stress that often results in anti-aging and life prolonging effects. In a series of experimental studies, we have reported that repeated mild heat stress (RMHS) has anti-aging hormetic effects on growth and various cellular and biochemical characteristics of human skin fibroblasts undergoing aging in vitro. These beneficial effects of repeated challenge include the maintenance of stress protein profile, reduction in the accumulation of oxidatively and glycoxidatively damaged proteins, stimulation of the proteasomal activities for the degradation of abnormal proteins, improved cellular resistance to other stresses, and enhanced levels of cellular antioxidant ability. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of hormetic effects of RMHS, we are now undertaking studies on signal transduction pathways, energy production and utilisation kinetics, and the proteomic analysis of patterns of proteins synthesised and their posttranslational modifications in various types of human cells undergoing cellular aging in vitro. Human applications of hormesis include early intervention and modulation of the aging process to prevent or delay the onset of age-related conditions, such as sarcopenia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cataracts and osteoporosis.

Introduction: In elderly patients the dizziness and balance disorders may be elicited by the central nervous system dysfunction on various levels, caused be aging process and the coexisting diseases. The aim of the study was to assess the efficiency of rehabilitation in elderly patients with dizziness and balance unsteadiness.Material and methods: Out of the 84 patients over 65 years, with central vestibular impairment diagnosed in videonystagmography VNG, 31 with dizziness and balance unsteadiness, were enrolled to the study. Otolaryngological examination, Tinetti test, Time and Go test (TUG) and Functional Reach (FR) tests were conducted in all patients. They were assessed twice before and after 2 weeks of vestibular rehabilitation (VR). Training sessions took place five times a week. Results: Statistically significant improvement in total DHI and 3 subscale were observed after therapy. As many as 70% of patients presented better outcome in the gait and stability tests - in Time and Go test (TUG) an average score of 15.3 seconds, in Tinetti test an average of 22 points (low chance to fall) and in the FR test 27 cm were observed. Conclusion: In elderly patients, vestibular rehabilitation is a method that significantly improves posture and gait stability. In ageing patients with dizziness and unsteadiness clinical, functional and objective tests could confirm diagnosis and monitor VR therapy.

longevity genes
Opis:
The genetics of aging has made substantial strides in the past decade. This progress has been confined primarily to model organisms, such as filamentous fungi, yeast, nematodes, fruit flies, and mice, in which some thirty-five genes that determine life span have been cloned. These genes encode a wide array of cellular functions, indicating that there must be multiple mechanisms of aging. Nevertheless, some generalizations are already beginning to emerge. It is now clear that there are at least four broad physiological processes that play a role in aging: metabolic control, resistance to stress, gene dysregulation, and genetic stability. The first two of these at least are common themes that connect aging in yeast, nematodes, and fruit flies, and this convergence extends to caloric restriction, which postpones senescence and increases life span in rodents. Many of the human homologs of the longevity genes found in model organisms have been identified. This will lead to their use as candidate human longevity genes in population genetic studies. The urgency for such studies is great: The population is graying, and this research holds the promise of improvement in the quality of the later years of life.

Opis:
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is a conserved enzyme involved in the regulation of DNA repair and genome stability. The role of PARP during aging is not well known. In this study PARP activity was investigated in nuclear fractions from hippocampus, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex of adult (4 months), old adult (14 months) and aged (24-27 months) rats. Concomitantly, the free radical evoked lipid peroxidation was estimated as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). The specific activity of PARP in adult brain was about 25, 21 and 16 pmol/mg protein per min in hippocampus, cerebellum and cerebral cortex, respectively. The enzyme activity was higher in all investigated parts of the brain of old adults. In aged animals PARP activity was lower in hippocampus by about 50%, and was unchanged in cerebral cortex and in cerebellum comparing to adult rats. The concentration of TBARS was the same in all parts of the brain and remained unchanged during aging. There is no direct correlation between PARP activity and free radical evoked lipid peroxidation during brain aging. The lowered enzyme activity in aged hippocampus may decrease DNA repair capacity which subsequently may be responsible for the higher vulnerability of hippocampal neurons to different toxic insults.

Opis:
The study aims at statistical and spatial analysis of population ageing in Poland’s 2479 communes (LAU2 - Local Administrative Unit 2) as of December 31, 2014 based on quantitative data from the Local Data Bank, the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The paper presents the results of applying the following indices: the share of the old in the population, double ageing index and the ageing index by A. Sauvy. Findings prove that 9% of Polish communes are old and 91% are very old according to UNO classification. In Polish LAU2s the share of elderly people (65%+) in total population ranges from 7% to 39,3%, double ageing index from 2,9% to 20,8% and the number of the old per 100 young amounts from 25,3 to 306,1. Thus communes characterised by the lowest values of applied indices should be perceived as ‘the youngest’ among the old. The oldest communes accumulate in Eastern Poland, which makes it the oldest region in the country. That advanced ageing of the local population can be the main threat to the development of those communities unless balanced by the inflow of exogenous demographic potential.
Celem artykułu jest statystyczna i przestrzenna analiza zróżnicowania starości demograficznej populacji lokalnych w 2479 gminach (LAU2) w Polsce w oparciu o ilościowe dane wtórne z Banku Danych Lokalnych GUS. W badaniu wykorzystano wskaźnik udziału ludności w wieku starszym w ogólnej liczbie ludności, wskaźnik podwójnego starzenia oraz wskaźnik starości demograficznej według A. Sauvy.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure

The development of relationships between young people and the generation of the grandparents must be accompanied by a sense of solidarity and the need to share experiences, especially in the family circle. In this way, young people are slowly gaining experience in finding thread of understanding and creating relations with other people from the atomising population. Mutual understanding and keeping good relations between the generations also prevents the isolation and marginalization of the older generation; then the young people do not see any interest to „help” them in this. Today we can observe with concern how the culture of the nations living with the present moment is getting exhausted and disappears because the individual gradually is losing its connection with family members and the roots of its own history. After all, the older people are able to offer invaluable assistance to young people, they can be and should be the trustees of the past and all these things in order to prevent a young generation from forgetting traditions, customs, art, religion, music, culture, and crafts of their fathers.

Introduction: Statistical data from the turn of the 20th century shows a significant increase in the average human life span and, what follows, an extension of old age. The world is aging and Poland has joined the list of countries which have been classified as demographically old since the rate at which society is aging has become very fast. Purpose: The aim of this thesis was to become familiar with the opinions submitted by respondents regarding aging and old age, health problems connected with aging and preferred health behaviors.Materials and methods: The research was conducted between January 3rd of 2013 and February 15th of 2014 on a group of 200 junior high school students and 200 university students from the Medical University of Białystok Faculty of Health Sciences using a questionnaire created by the authors. Results: A vast majority of the respondents of the study groups declared that they have thought about old age. Among university students this percentage reached 38.5%. Almost 50.0% of all respondents acknowledged that older people are needed by society. Conclusions: The results show that the aging process should be contemplated considering multiple aspects of life: biological, psychological and social. Moreover, youth education programs about seniors and old age as well as about ways to counteract their stigmatization should be introduced.

Opis:
Aging is a significant characteristic of modern world’s population despite some regional differences. It strongly influences both the political sphere and the mental one, which are profoundly interrelat- ed. Aged democratic societies contrary to the ones governed by authoritarian regimes tend to impose a characteristic input of social demands to the system claiming a conversion towards solutions which might be less acceptable to the younger part of the population. This poses a threat of young adults’ mi- gration and in the same way some intensification of a new social burden. Older societies because of their average mental construction present more rational elective preferences, rely more on recommendation and habits, fossilizing the political stage. On the other hand, the political factor may affect the mental sphere of aging societies as well both because of physical/economic reasons and direct psychological im- pact. In the first case the matter of dispute lies mostly in fear and frustration caused by limited abilities of self-defense whereas the direct impact boils down to such outputs as strengthening stereotypical stig- matization, the feeling of marginalization or anxiety of a person whose contextual world is fading away.

UVC-induced apoptotic symptoms such as morphological changes, DNA fragmentation, Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression were examined in primary splenocyte cultures from young (3 months) and old (24 months) rats. The activities of AP-1 and CRE transcription factors in UVC-irradiated splenocytes were also assessed. At 24 h after UVC irradiation 40% of cells derived from young rats were found to be apoptotic, which was twice as much as in splenocytes from old rats. Apoptosis in cells from old rats did not give typical symptoms like a "DNA ladder" and Bcl-2 protein downregulation, in contrast to splenocytes from young rats. No AP-1 transcription factor activity was found in UVC-irradiated splenocytes from old animals and only a trace activity in splenocytes from young animals. This indicates that, UVC-induced apoptosis in rat splenocytes is practically AP-1 independent and that cells from old rats are less sensitive to UVC irradiation than splenocytes from young rats.

This text addresses the perception of old age in the 21st century. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the issue of the diverse perception of aging and old age. The addressees of the article are employees of social services, NGO activists, the elderly and their caregivers, people who contribute to the environment in which the elderly live, as well as students of medical, social sciences and pedagogical fields of studies. The selection of literature for this study was not accidental, as the authors of selected works are the elite of world gerontology, andragogy, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, whose main area of scientific interest are issues related to old age and the aging process. These include: Aleksander Kamiński, Zofia Szarota, Artur Fabiś, Barbara Szatur-Jawoska, Paul Baltes and others. The article attempts to show old age as a period of heyday and living it in a dignified rather than chronological way. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages and of this period of human life are presented, as wells as recognised examples of good practice, institutional support and non-institutional support.. The text highlights some of the determinants that are characteristic for ageing and old age, such as: successful ageing, graceful ageing and quality of life. Such an approach to the problem helps to reflect more deeply on the issue raised, while helping to exclude metastereotypes and contribute to treating old age as a value. It will also make us reflect on the passage of time and on the last period of life, which does not have to fill us with fear, being scared of the unknown, a sense of helplessness, and for which we should learn and prepare throughout our life. The article also highlights two very important facts that old age cannot be confined, and its limits cannot be defined, as well as the heterogeneity of this social group, which does not allow for the development of a single model of old age, which would become a model used by the sciences dealing with this field of study. Finally, an attempt was made to answer the key question – Can you fall in love with old age?

Opis:
Aging is a biological process, the mechanisms of which are not fully known to us. Therefore, there are many theories on the mechanisms governing it. This paper describes the four theories that provide information on the molecular aspects of aging of organisms. The first theory assumes the impact of telomere length on the length of life. Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures located at the ends of chromosomes, which protect against the loss of genetic information and which shorten with each cell cycle. Excessively shortened telomeres are conducive to the development of cancer, and aging of cells and organisms. The second, mitochondrial, theory describes the impact of accumulating mutations in the mtDNA on aging. According to this theory, the aging process is caused by free radicals, i.e. chemically reactive molecules, formed in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells as the result of the reduction of molecular oxygen. The toxic effect of such reactive oxygen species leads to the accumulation of oxidative damage and malfunctioning of cells. According to the third, immunological, theory, the main cause of aging is decreased immune function and reduced amount of produced T and B lymphocytes and disturbances in the production of antibodies, all of which progress with age. According to the fourth, cell theory, homeostatic imbalance is the main cause of ageing. Aging of cells in the elderly causes them to be more prone to the so-called old-age diseases. Each of the described theories provides a better understanding of the extremely complex process that is ageing, even though they do not provide complete explanations of its mechanism.

This paper provides a window into the ways kinship caregivers of elderly persons and people with disabilities describe their experiences with social services in Poland. Kinship caregivers in Poland, the majority of whom are women, often struggle with inadequate access to social services dedicated to people with disabilities and the elderly. One of the major issues faced by caregivers who try to secure these services, are complex rules and regulations which frequently make it very difficult to access information and assistance. By the way of critical discourse analysis, this paper examines letters by and interviews with kinship caregivers in Poland. These two data sets present the problems faced by kinship caregivers of elderly persons and people with disabilities who are frequently left frustrated by their interactions the social services system and its gatekeepers. Therefore, the authors hope that this study will provide policymakers responsible for social policy in Poland with some useful insights and suggestions.

The lifespan of budding yeast cells is divided into two stages: reproductive and post-reproductive. The post-reproductive stage of the yeast's lifespan has never been characterized before. We have analyzed the influence of various mutations on the post-reproductive (PRLS) and replicative (RLS) lifespans. The results indicate that PRLS demonstrates an inverse relationship with RLS. The observed lack of differences in the total lifespan (TLS) (expressed in units of time) of strains differing up to five times in RLS (expressed in the number of daughters formed) suggests the necessity of revision of opinions concerning the use of yeast as a model organism of gerontology.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present article was to make a narrative review about the relation of cognitive functions and neurotrophic factors with aging. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem concerns the issue of aging and the changes in cognitive and biochemical functioning that may occur in this process. The article uses the method of critical analyzes as well as the analyzes of the reference literature. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The first section of the article discusses population aging, the second addresses changes related to cognitive functions during aging. The third part show biochemical aspects that can directly influence the cognitive functions already mentioned, and on aging in general. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result of this review points out that the world population is aging in an accelerated way and during this process of aging there are several changes in the organism of the elderly, among which stand out the cognitive and biochemical, one being directly related to the other. In this case, there is a relation of the neurotrophic factors, which may be responsible for the changes in cognitive functions, specifically spatial memory alterations. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It is necessary that more studies be carried out with this population, which may trace the elderly with cognitive impairment that may be suggestive or conclusive of a neurodegenerative disease. In addition, biochemical data may contribute to the search for new therapeutic models or early identification for Alzheimer’s disease or other associated dementias.

The article deals with the model of Active Strategy of Enhancing Health (ASEH). This model is based on the conception of health as the state of integrity. In constructing the strategy charactestics of biological disfunctions connected with the process of aging were taking into account. The objectif of ASEH is to neutralize negative effects of biological aging by taking advantage of potentiality lying in psychophysical and social activity. Five factors of this activity: personalization, integrity, challenges, cooperation and personal goals are supposed to contribute to enhancing health, i.e. the state of integrity of seniors.

Population aging is a natural social process. Nevertheless the increase in the population of the elderly (including those of an advanced age – above 85 years old) in the last decade in Poland is unusually high. The rapid increase in the number of older people and their percent-age in the total population is associated with specific social and economic consequences. These have to be faced both by the central government as well as local authorities. In the article author concentrated on the question of the knowledge of local authorities about demo-graphic changes and perceptions of their consequences. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of local government representatives on the ageing of the local community and the interpretation of changes caused by this process. In addition, the author has identified the measures that local governments have declared to undertake to increase awareness of aging and its consequences. In the article the results of a survey conducted in July 2015 in 77 of the 119 non-metropolitan municipalities of Pomeranian province has been used.

There are two main processes that induce skin aging: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic aging is caused by environmental factors such as sun exposure, air pollution, smoking, and poor nutrition. Intrinsic aging reflects the genetic background especially in terms of cell viability and proliferation potential, and depends on time. It introduces unfavorable changes in the functioning of organs and in the external appearance of the body, especially visible on the skin. Wrinkles, discoloration and loss of facial contours can reduce the quality of everyday life and disrupt human social relationships. There are now a couple of theories of aging to explain this inevitable fact of being human like: genetic, Hayflick’s, mitochondrial, biochemical and protein impairments theories. Both surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures are used to maintain a beneficial appearance, rejuvenation and slow down skin aging. From year to year, public interest in the use of innovative anti-aging treatments increases, enabling the preservation of youthful appearance for a longer period than it results from the physiological life cycle. Non-surgical aesthetic treatments, delaying skin aging, activate natural mechanisms of cell renewal and accelerate their metabolism, stimulate the synthesis of fibroblasts to produce collagen, which is the main building element of the skin. The most effective treatments delaying skin aging currently include, among others lifting with polydioxane threads, skin regeneration with platelet rich plasma, microneedle and needle mesotherapy, plasmage lifting as well as dermabrasion and microdermabrasion treatments combined with chemical exfoliation. Professional and systematic stimulations of cells allow lengthening and restoring the beneficial appearance of the skin in all its layers. Treatments using polydioxane threads restore the distorted face oval and lift the skin around the eyes. The procedure using platelet-rich plasma activates cell growth factors, improving the regenerative processes of mature skin. A non-surgical face lift called plasmage, allows excess tissue to evaporate in order to reduce and eliminate wrinkles and drooping eyelids. Various types of mesotherapy and dermabrasion treatments affect the reconstruction of the skin structure, reduce fine wrinkles and stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastic fibers.
Zabiegi z wykorzystaniem nici polidioksanowych przywracają zaburzony owal twarzy i unoszą skórę w okolicach oczu. Procedura z użyciem osocza bogatopłytkowego aktywuje czynniki wzrostu komórek, usprawniając procesy regeneracyjne skóry dojrzałej. Niechirurgiczny lifting twarzy zwany plasmage, umożliwia odparowanie nadmiaru tkanki w celu redukcji i likwidacji zmarszczek oraz opadających powiek. Różnego typu zabiegi mezoterapii wpływają na przebudowę struktury skóry, redukcję drobnych zmarszczek.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of investigations concerning a new method used for predicting the allowable time of storage of biocomponents – FAME. The method was based on laboratory research carried out with the use of a storage tank simulator. The aging process was carried out in the conditions increasing the reaction rate – at high temperature. There are several methods/procedures used for predicting the allowable time of storage of fuels and biocomponents – FAME, but all of them are based on tests at the temperature so high that the mechanism of aging process is different than the one observed in storage tanks. It was assumed that the aging process could be divided into two stages: at the first stage, the aging precursors are created and at the second stage, precursors are converted into the fuel aging products. These products lead to changes in fuel properties. The kinetics of precursor creation determines the rate of all reactions, which lead to the final aging products. It was found that the rate of reaction at the first stage of fuel aging can be effectively increased by an increase in temperature and even relatively high temperature does not change the mechanism of the creation of aging precursors. The method that has been worked out makes it possible to control the mechanism of aging process during quick laboratory tests. The products of aging processes were detected with the use of the IR-VIS spectrometry. The allowable time of storage was determined for several FAME samples on the basis of quick laboratory tests. The results of laboratory quick tests were verified by comparing them with the results of the aging process of FAME in storage tanks. On the basis of the test results, the algorithm of allowable time of FAME storage calculation was worked out.

The World Masters Games (WMG) are an international, multi-sport event which, in terms of competitor numbers, is the world’s largest. The purpose of this manuscript was to summarize research to date that has been conducted on the WMG cohort. This paper also reports a descriptive and analytical overview of this large sample to document aspects of demographics and health indices for this population. Masters athletes demonstrated significant improvements in health related indices over age matched comparative national populations. Notable among these improvements were body mass index and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors for the majority of participants, with female WMG participants presenting improved scores for CVD risk factors (blood pressure and high density lipoproteins, p < 0.05) and body mass index (p < 0.05) when compared to males. There were also improved lifestyle behaviors such as reduced smoking. A concern was improved health indices might be negated by increased injury from competitive sport at older ages, however findings did not support the premise of masters football code athletes having higher incidence of injury compared to younger athletes. With improved health indices associated with masters competition, it is relevant when promoting physical activity at older ages that the most motivating factor behind participation was socialization with others.

Opis:
Galactosamine (GalN), a well-known hepatotoxin that depletes the cellular pool of uracil nucleotides, was previously shown to have greater impact on the inhibition of protein synthesis in hepatocytes of old rats as compared with young animals (Kmieć 1994, Ann. N.Y. Ac. Sci. 717, 216-225). In the present study we compared the effects of GalN on the nucleotide content (measured by ion-exchange HPLC) in the livers of young (4 months), adult (12 months), and old (24-26 months old) rats two hours after its intraperitoneal administration. UTP content of the livers of old control rats was significantly lower (by 28%) than that of young animals. GalN administration decreased the UTP content in the livers of young, adult and old rats by, respectively, 55%, 65% and 89%, and increased the content of UDP-sugars by 189%, 175% and 305%. The hepatic content of ATP, ADP, AMP, NAD, GTP except CTP did not differ significantly among the age groups of rats studied, and was not changed by GalN treatment. The content of CTP was significantly higher in old rats (P < 0.03) upon GalN treatment. The lower hepatic content of UTP may partially explain the increased sensitivity of hepatocytes and livers of old rats to the action of galactosamine, and possibly to other hepatotoxic compounds that decrease transcription in the liver.

The success of experimental biology was possible due to the use of model organisms. It is believed that the mechanisms of aging have a universal character and they are conserved in a wide range of organisms. The explanation of these universal mechanisms by tracing survival curves of model organisms clearly suggests that death of individuals is a direct consequence of aging. Furthermore, the use of unicellular organisms like yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to explain the aging processes of multicellular organisms runs the risk of oversimplification. Aging is a very complex process and therefore in this paper we present arguments suggesting that some of these fundamental assumptions require a deep rethinking and verification.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Perform a review of protein and vitamin D supplementation in Sarcopenia. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Demographic change implies new demands for public health, with health promotion and prevention activities seeking to delay the appearance of common diseases in elderly population. We performed a review of protein and vitamin D supplementation in Sarcopenia. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Changes in body composition occur during the aging process, resulting in increased body fat and reduced muscle mass and also bone mass. Sarcopenia is defined by a syndrome characterized by generalized and progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. After 50 years, there is a reduction between approximately 1% and 2% of muscle mass per year. RESEARCH RESULTS: Currently progressive resistance training is the most well-established intervention, and dietary interventions such as protein and vitamin D also mentioned in literature. Leucine is a branched chain amino acid knows as key role in muscle protein synthesis. The consumption of leucine-enriched amino acids showed beneficial effects in the elderly contributing to the conservation of skeletal muscle mass. Vitamin D has pre-hormone functions, vitamin D deficiency is related with diffuse musculoskeletal pain, myopathy, sarcopenia and falls. Vitamin D supplementation of 800 to 1000 IU/day is associated with increased muscle strength in the elderly. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The protein and vitamin D supplementation are strategies that are proving to be important for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia, especially when associated with resistance training.

Old age, an inevitable outcome of the process of aging, in which biological, mental and social changes lead to biological and mental imbalance, has been present as a subject in literature since the very beginning, and we can find both male and female elderly protagonists, with the changes observable in their final stages of lives. The article analyses selected protagonists of literary works of Martin Walser created in the 20th century, their spiritual, emotional and physical aging, problems of sexual nature, the deepening gap between elderly women or man and the young generation, or loneliness and lack of understanding connected with aging. The subject of transience, aging, declining vital force, existential dilemmas which accompany the last years of life, has been present in Walser’s works for decades, not only in those created recently the motif of the fear of life, the truth, ageing, loss and inevitable death, determining the attitudes and actions of the protagonists has been particularly foregrounded. The early works “A Runaway Horse” and “Breakers” provide material for analysis herein.

The chief purpose of this study is to investigate the process of adsorption of heavy metals in sands containing microplastics due to aging and bacterial culture. For this purpose, first, the experiment’s conditions were determined by reviewing previous studies and examining the effects of factors on the duration of bacterial culture and UV radiation. Finally, the test conditions were determined as follows: 25 g of adsorbent in 250 ml solution containing 50 mg/l of lead, cadmium, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel, 750 micrograms of microplastic, bacterial culture time two days, aging time with UV light 14 days. Results of the study show that the addition of virgin microplastics has little effected on increasing the adsorbent strength, except in the case of nickel which reduces adsorption strength. The aging process increases the absorption of all studied metals by up to 60%. Bacterial culture without an aging process reduces the absorption of nickel and cadmium. Simultaneous use of bacterial culture and aging increases the adsorption power by up to 80% for all metals.

The aging of population is a common problem in the modern economy and finance. Reverse mortgage is one of alternative ways of raising citizens’ standard of living after retiring by obtaining financial benefits accumulated in a residential property. The aim of the study is to evaluate a role of equity release service in providing additional household income for senior citizens illustrated by the case of a reverse mortgage. This type of service consists in transformation of non-liquid, tied-up in property capital into liquid financial resources. Thanks to capital conversion, senior citizens can supplement retirement benefits without a need to leave their property. The research hypothesis verified in the study stated that benefits paid as equity release in the form of a reverse mortgage provided greater support for women than for men. That hypothesis was rejected.

Melatonin and cortisol are the main hormones of the circadian rhythm, which effect cognitive decline during aging. An imbalance of circadian rhythm hormones serves as an early sign of the progress of age-related disease and brain pathology in aging. The aim of this study was to determine the cortisol-melatonin ratio in relation to brain activity and cognitive function in aging. Sixty-four aging subjects were recruited from the brain healthy project. The morning salivary of all subjects was collected for cortisol and melatonin levels analysis. The brain activity was recorded for 5 minutes in the eyes open condition and seven cognitive functions were assessed by the MoCA. The results were divided into a low ratio group and a high ratio group of cortisol-melatonin ratio. The low ratio group and the high ratio group differed in the delta-beta ratio at the left temporal lope (p < .05), and the delayed recall in the high ratio group was markedly higher than in the low ratio group. Moreover, the cortisol-melatonin ratio was strongly correlated with delayed recall (p < .05), the delta-beta ratio in the left temporal lope (p <.05), the theta alpha ratio in the left temporal lope (p < .05), and right temporal lope (p < .05). We found that a low cortisol-melatonin ratio corresponded to a high delta-beta ratio and a high thetaalpha ratio at the left temporal lobe with a low score of delayed recall function, but a high cortisol-melatonin ratio corresponded to a low delta-beta ratio and a low theta-alpha ratio at the left temporal lobe with a high score of delayed recall. The imbalance of the circadian hormone related to cognitive function and brain activity in aging could serve as a biomarker of age-related diseases.

Introduction: Aging facial skin is a natural and unavoidable process. It involves a gradual weakening of the biological activity of cells, extension of regenerative processes and reduction of adaptability. At the same time, a smooth, radiant, wrinkle-free complexion has been a global trend in cosmetology for many years, which results in more and more people, especially women, benefiting from new non-invasive anti-aging treatments. One of such treatments offered on the cosmetology market are treatments utilising RF radio waves. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of a series of treatments utilising RF on the skin of the faces of women. Materials and methods: The analysis of the results was carried out by the examined person and by the authors of the project via a point scale of visual assessment of skin condition. The following facial skin parameters were analysed in the study: depth of wrinkles, elasticity, skin brightening and moisturising. Results and conclusions: The conducted own study proves the impact of treatments using RF radio waves on the skin of the face. The applied series of treatments caused a partial reduction of the most visible and deepest wrinkles, as well as improved elasticity, brightening and moisturising of the facial skin.
W badaniach analizowano następujące parametry skóry twarzy: głębokość zmarszczek, elastyczność, rozświetlenie i nawilżenie skóry. Wyniki i wnioski: Przeprowadzone badania własne dowodzą wpływu zabiegów z zastosowaniem fal radiowych RF na skórę twarzy. Zastosowana seria zabiegów spowodowało częściową redukcję najbardziej widocznych i najgłębszych zmarszczek, a także poprawę elastyczności, rozświetlenia i nawilżenia skóry twarzy.

Introduction: Health is one of the most important and cherished values in the elderly. It has been estimated that among people over 65 years old 80% of people suffer from at least one physical illness. Purpose: To identify the opinions of the respondents on the most common health problems of elderly over 60. Materials and methods: The study was conducted between January 2013 and November 2014 in three study groups: Polish, Belarusian and Greek students. A total of 600 (200 for each group) respondents were tested with the questionnaire created by authors. Results: Respondents indicated that the most characteristic physical features of elderly people are wrinkles (68.7%, n = 412), gray hair (54.3%, n = 326) while cardiovascular diseases are the most common health problem (76.3%, n = 458). The most significant factor in delaying the aging process was active lifestyle (85.3%, n = 512). Conclusions: There is a need for increased education in geriatrics and care of the elderly among students of health sciences, who in the future will be entered in the geriatric therapeutic teams. The perception of health problems of the elderly were different depending on the country of origin of the respondents. This may indicate that the students don’t know the basic diseases and ailments in this age group (for example geriatric giants).

This article deals with the relationships between seniors’ lifestyles and their health and quality of life with respect to the determinants and consequences of aging. As found, considering the complex and dynamically changing set of factors determining individuals’ lifestyles the elderly “withdraw from life” too early and too far. This worrying finding brings into attention active recreation as an approach allowing people to maintain physical fitness, mental health and social activity, and thus being capable of postponing the most severe effects of aging. Before presenting the potential of active tourism as a useful instrument of active recreation, the social consequences of aging and the special character of „seniors” as a social group are discussed in terms of what enables and what restricts the use of free time. This provides a background for showing the functions of tourism as an activity having a beneficial effect not only on physical and mental health, but also on the social interaction of elderly people. Active recreation effectively compensates for losses caused by economic inactivity and withdrawal from certain social roles by building various social relations (including intergenerational) and breaking isolation, as well as by initiating a learning process based on new experiences and contacts, and developing interests and skills that strengthen the feeling of independence, self-confidence and self-esteem. Active tourism, adjusted to the needs and capabilities of elderly people, may make a measurable contribution to better quality of their lives.

It seems, that regardless the differences between big towns, basic goals and assumptions for the policy towards senior citizens are similar in the majority of metropolitan communities. Due to the fact that any proposal concerning social policy should be preceded by a diag- nosis, the article begins with the description of demographic situation of big Polish towns (above half million population) and with a diagnosis of the situation of senior citi- zens in Warsaw. Opis:
IntroductionAging stands for the changes in the human body, which are recognized as natural processes that concern every person and are related to the passage of time. Despite ‘normalness’ of the process, a tendency is emerging to treat aging as a pathology requiring proper diagnostics. Consequently, an ‘anti-aging’ medicine has been established - defined as study of preventing and slowing down the process of aging.Aim of the studyThe aim of this study is to summarize and present the current knowledge, based on the overview of writing on the properties and effectiveness of the use of PRP in anti-aging therapy.  Description of knowledge Autologous platelet-rich plasma is a concentrate of human blood platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma, wherein concentration of thrombocytes is higher than initial concentration. For autologous plasma to have high healing properties, platelet levels should be at least 1 million in 5 ml of plasma. The basic condition for initiating repair and regenerative processes in vivo is the formation of a blood clot. Also, by degranulating, platelets release many growth factors, such as PDGF, TGF-β, EGF, FGF, VEGF and others, which are involved not only in blood coagulation, but also in immune response and tissue healing. The large variety of PRP-obtaining methods and the range of concentration levels of growth factors in PRP may lead to ambiguity in the literature, as to the extent to which formulation was actually used in a variety of preclinical and clinical studies. Some of those studies are presented in this article. Summary Platelet-rich treatments are part of the growing popularity of regenerative medicine, which is beginning to be recognized as the medicine of the future. However, without proper control methods or optimization of numerous variables (e.g. concentration or ratio of growth factors) during PRP preparation, it is not known which ingredients are needed and preferred, and which are harmful for tissue regeneration. However, numerous studies show PRP injection as a promising method of rejuvenating the skin, therefore platelet-rich treatments are an important part of the growing popularity of regenerative medicine.

A known soybean seed lot was separated into four size classes using round-hole screens. The seed lots were deteriorated by rapid aging and invigorated by hydro- and halo-priming. These pre-treated seeds were planted in rolled paper towels and the results were evaluated according to ISTA rules. The small soybean seeds had higher speed of germination than the other size classes. The seedlings produced from large and medium seeds were longer and heavier than those from other size classes. Our results indicated that the large seeds had less sensitivity to short-term aging condition owing to the number of normal seedlings, while the deterioration more increased the germination time of large and medium seeds, compared to small ones. The alleviatory effects of halo-priming on deterioration of seeds are greater compared with hydro-priming. Although there are some debates, the present data further indicate that larger soybean seeds are susceptible to aging condition.

Opis:
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate ageing-induced genetic changes and to establish physiological thresholds for loss of genetic integrity during ageing or storage of rice seeds. In the first experiment, seeds of 10 varieties of rice were subjected to artificial ageing in chambers conditioned to 55°C and 72±2% RH for 72 hours. In the second experiment, seeds of 4 varieties of rice stored in the NACGRAB gene bank, Nigeria in 2011 at 5± 4°C were compared with seeds of the same accessions freshly harvested in 2013. Data were collected on seed germination and seedling length to estimate the seed vigour index. Genetic changes during the ageing were evaluated by SSR markers using a Direct™ PCR kit. Genetic distance indices were computed using PAST™ software and percentage genetic integrity was estimated from the genetic distance matrices. At 72 hours of artificial ageing, seed germination percentage declined to 54.2% and vigour index 0.8 coinciding with the lowest estimate of genetic integrity of 99.5%. The decline in percentage genetic integrity during the artificial ageing indicated a systematic ageing-induced genetic alteration. SSR primer RM178 revealed variations that suggest losses of alleles in the course of ageing for 2 accessions at between 24 hours in WITA4 and 48 to 51 hours in CG14. In the gene bank storage trial, germination of seeds after one and two years of storage was above 80% and there were no significant differences among the accessions. SSR profiles for all the accessions were also similar. The result partly corroborates the artificial ageing data. This implies that seed viability benchmark of 54% is recommended for regeneration of stored rice seeds in order to maintain optimum genetic integrity during storage.

Opis:
This study aimed at evaluating the impact of short-term and long-term aging on the properties of road bitumen modified with low-viscosity agents. Two types of road bitumen were used as reference binders: 35/50 and PMB 45/80-65. The modifier, Fischer-Tropsch synthetic wax, was added in 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3% increments. The testing programme included the indication of the penetration at 25 ̊C, the Ring and Ball Softening Point and the Fraass Breaking Point. These properties were determined in three phases: prior to aging, after the bitumen had been aged in the short-term aging test, RTFOT, and after the bitumen had been aged in the long-term aging test, PAV. Modification of the bitumen made it stiffer thus increasing the resistance of the bituminous mixture to permanent deformation. The results show that both short-term and long-term aging contributed to increased hardness and brittleness of the binder.

Wytrzymałość połączenia adhezyjnego (badana metodą odrywową wg PN-EN ISO 4624:2016-05) w przypadku powłoki niestarzonej wynosiła bowiem 8 MPa, zaś w przypadku powłoki starzonej klimatycznie uległa obniżeniu do wartości 4,3 MPa. Oceniając stan niestarzonej powłoki akrylowej po przeprowadzonej próbie odrywania, stwierdzono rozerwanie adhezyjne pomiędzy warstwą kleju a warstwą powierzchniową powłoki akrylowej na obszarze obejmującym 100% powierzchni stempla. Natomiast powłokę starzoną klimatycznie charakteryzowało kohezyjne rozerwanie warstwy podkładowej na obszarze powierzchni stempla wynoszącym 95% oraz adhezyjne oderwanie warstwy kleju od warstwy nawierzchniowej powłoki na obszarze stanowiącym 5% powierzchni stempla.
Investigations were carried out of climatic ageing influence on acrylic coatings adhesion to the steel substrate. Obtained results showed that ageing factors action for two years contributed to the decrease of coatings adhesion to steel substrate. Pull-off adhesion strength (examined according to PN-EN ISO 4624:2016-05) was 8 MPa in the case of unaged coating whereas, in the case of coating aged climatically, de-creased to 4,3 MPa. Evaluation of unaged coating state after pull-off test revealed adhesive break between the bond layer and the acrylic coating surface on the whole area of the stamp surface. However, in the case of the climatically aged coating, the cohesive break occurred in the primer layer on the 95% area of stamp surface and the cohesive break between the bond layer and the coating surface on the 5% area of the stamp surface.

The aim of the article is to review and benchmark the current concepts in the psychology of human successful aging. The diverse nature of the process of aging underlies the distinction between normal, pathological and successful aging. Psychological concepts of successful aging in humans adopt common assumption that it is possible to take certain actions substantiating optimal course of this process. At the same time a summary of approaches appropriate to particular concepts allows for their classification, which results in the separation of three specific groups of them. Their specificity may be expressed by the following terms: "lifestyle", "description" and "mechanism". This article includes characteristics of emerged groups of concepts and indicates the extent of their usefulness and limitations.

Opis:
Contemporary debate on human aging is intensive and multifaceted in nature because of agerelated transformation in many contemporary societies, i.e. a rapid increase of mean life expectancy (increasing numbers of healthy old people). The aim of this article is to discuss changes in brain and behavior that occur in later life. Life-span developmental neuropsychology emphasizes a close relationship between cognitive problems in later life and age-related loss of large neurons in some parts of the brain. Large neurons shrink into smaller neuron classes. The most pronounced atrophic changes have been reported in the prefrontal area, hippocampus, ubstantianigra and locus cinereus. This article presents also common clinical conditions of later life, such as differential diagnosis of age-associated behavioral changes and dementias. There may be multiple causes of neurogeriatric disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. There has been considerable interest in the possible causative role of cognitive and brain reserve which differs among individuals. Therefore between-individual heterogeneity related to normal cognitive aging is signifi cant. Namely, if cerebral pathology occurs (e.g., neurodegeneration with dementia), persons with a greater reserve may not demonstrate the same cognitive impact as others with the same pathology (e.g. lesion size) but less reserve. It is also widely believed that mental difficulties in lder adults cannot be easily attributed to psychomotor slowness which may reflect a loss of white matter tissue, i.e. dysmielinisation of nerve fibers. This article emphasizes an importance of ecologically valid assessment of older adults, whose everyday activities and real--world abilities cannot be predicted by the traditional tests and sophisticated procedures emerging from purely experimental investigations.

Radiation yield of oxygen consumption, oxidative induction time and gel fraction allowed to estimate the utility of the applied experimental methods to monitor oxidative aging of the polymeric material from the standpoint of cable and wire degradation in nuclear power plants. It was found that the phenolic antioxidant not only inhibits chain oxidation but also changes the mechanisms of radical processes influencing significantly capability of polyethylene towards thermally-induced cross-linking.

Opis:
There has been increasing interest in recent years in the use of biodiesel as a substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel. Fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) in a pure form are applied as a biodiesel B100 or as blends with diesel fuels named as the B10 biodiesel, the B20 biodiesel etc. FAME is susceptible to oxidation and to changes of other essential parameters during aging processes, which have an essential influence the NOx emission. Change of biodiesel parameters results in deterioration of fuel working properties and in increase of the NOx emission level. The increased NOx emission level is accompanied with high viscosity. Experiments with the PDPA laser-equipment showed that high content of biodiesel in a fuel increases the Sauter Mean Diameter (D32) of a fuel spray. The Sauter Mean Diameter increases with time of the aging process of biodiesel, what additionally can unfavourably influence the level of emission of exhaust gases. The research results of samples of aging processes of Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME) accomplishing requirements of the EN 14214 European Biodiesel Standard, diesel fuel accomplishing requirements of the EN 590 (for based diesel fuel and blends of based diesel fuel and RME containing 1%, 5%, and 20% RME) are presented in the paper. Determination of influence of the fuel properties and the aging process on the acid number, kinematic viscosity, cloud point, cold filter plugging point, and pour point of fuel samples was an aim of performed research, as well the aging RME effect on elastomers comparatively with fresh RME. The process of fuel samples aging was enforced by the daylight (sun) effect, air, the elevated temperature and water. Fuel samples were aged in laboratory conditions during 15 and 60 weeks. Then the changes of fuels properties with relation to the same properties in initial conditions were determined. The water presence intensifles the process of the RME aging, especially in longer contact. An essential novel aspect of the paper is a relation determined between changes of biodiesel properties during aging and the NOx emission level that is connected mostly with increased viscosity. Rise of viscosity increases size of droplets of spray ed fuel, which results in increased emission level. Prevention of viscosity changes is an efficient way of the NOx emission decrease.

Old age is a stage in human life associated with alteration of physical, mental and social functioning. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between regular physical activity (PA) and purpose of life, intensity of depressive moods, sense of coherence (SoC) and the level of anxiety in older adults. Forty six individuals physically active (A) and 49 physically inactive (NA) without mental or physical disability were included in the study. The purpose of life was assessed by Purpose of Life Scale (PIL), intensity of depressive moods by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), SoC by Antonovsky’s questionnaire and level of anxiety by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). An AN individuals had lover BDI-feelings level compared with A group (p < 0.05). The AN group also showed a significantly lower scores in anxiety-feature domain of the STAI (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that improved self-perceived quality of life is significantly associated to PA among older adults and regular PA may be effective for improving depression and anxiety symptoms in older adults. A better understanding of the relationship between the PA and depressive moods and level of anxiety is important to develop recommendations regarding modifications in life-style.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

In the article "'Investing in poetry isn't worth it'? The poetical criticism of popculture in Lipska's chosen poems from the years 2007-2015", Joanna Sapa proposes an analysis of the way in which the lyrical subject estimates and comments on the present cultural transformations that result from mass culture drawing in almost all elements of reality. The author's considerations begin with a reminder of Eagleton’s observations on the contemporary diminished importance of the real content of culture (understood as the material, ethical, and moral goods of a society) as compared to the meanings it is attributed by the society. The development of mass culture – including the reproduction of works, consumerism, globalization, and Theodor Adorno's „cultural industry” – caused a transformation of cultural goods into commodities. Zygmunt Bauman also writes about the special "consumer syndrome” being the effect of an ubiquitous and importunate marketization of human workings. The aim of the presented analysis is to highlight the poems from Lipska's newest poetical volumes: Newton's orange (2007), Aftersound (2010), Reader of papillary lines (2015) in which the lyrical I subject narrates the consequences of the chaotic, mass circulation of culture and of the mixing that occurs between the sphere of elitist culture and mass culture. In these poems, the lyrical I additionally talks about aging and death in the context of popular culture, and exposes various ways of valuing reality in media records. The Key according to which the author arranged Lipska’s poems into different sections is based on the metaphors they use (from diverse thematic circles). These are: the combination of high art and colloquial language ("MacHamlet’s on stage”); the consumers' uncritical acceptance of media's idealized world ("in apartments of television the pleb with the stars”); aging and dying as described by metaphors related to fashion and clothes ("in wide woollen shoulders of death”).

Recommendation algorithms trained on a training set containing sub-optimal decisions may increase the likelihood of making more bad decisions in the future. We call this harmful effect self-induced bias, to emphasize that the bias is driven directly by the user’s past choices. In order to better understand the nature of self-induced bias of recommendation algorithms that are used by older adults with cognitive limitations, we have used agent-based simulation. Based on state-of-the-art results in psychology of aging and cognitive science, as well as our own empirical results, we have developed a cognitive model of an e-commerce client that incorporates cognitive decision-making abilities. We have evaluated the magnitude of self-induced bias by comparing results achieved by simulated agents with and without cognitive limitations due to age. We have also proposed new recommendation algorithms designed to counteract self-induced bias. The algorithms take into account user preferences and cognitive abilities relevant to decision making. To evaluate the algorithms, we have introduced 3 benchmarks: a simple product filtering method and two types of widely used recommendation algorithms: Content-Based and Collaborative filtering. Results indicate that the new algorithms outperform benchmarks both in terms of increasing the utility of simulated agents (both old and young), and in reducing self-induced bias.

A sub-sample of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik. cv. Kimia) seeds was kept as bulk (S1) and the other seeds were separated by a sieve with four millimeters diameter. Consequently, three seed lots including bulk (S1), large (S2) and small (S3) seeds were obtained. Seeds of each size  were divided  into three sub-samples. A sub-sample was kept  as control or high vigor seed lot (A1). The other two sub-samples with about 20% moisture content were artificially aged at 40°C for 2 and 4 days (A2  and A3, respectively). These seeds were evaluated in laboratory and field during 2011 and 2012 as factorial experiments on the bases of RCB design. The lowest  mean germination  and emergence times  and the highest  germination  percentage, seedling dry weight and emergence percentage were recorded for high vigor seed lot. Large seeds produced the largest seedlings in comparison with bulk and small seeds. Although, seedling dry weight was reduced with increas- ing seed aging, the lowest reduction was recorded for seedlings from large seeds. The most deteriorated large seeds germinated earlier than those of bulk and small seeds. Early germination of the most deteriorated large seeds resulted in rapid emergence of seedlings in the field. This is also reflected in the highest positive correlation  of mean germination time with mean emergence time. It was concluded that some deleterious effects of seed aging can be reduced by increasing seed size.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of epoxy resin curing agents and aluminium surface modification on the properties of adhesive joints which were subjected to aging under thermal shock conditions. Composites containing reinforced aramid and carbon fibres with aluminium flat profiles (alloy Al 5754) were tested under shear conditions. Epoxy resin (Araldite LY 1564) with amine curing agents (Aradur 3486, Aradur 3487 and Aradur 3405) was used as a matrix. Composites were made using vacuum-assisted contact lamination. The degree of degradation was assessed on the basis of lap shear strength of adhesive joints in accordance with EN ISO 1465:2009. The research showed that epoxy composite samples based on Aradur 3405 (accelerated aliphatic polyamine) and sanded surface of aluminium presented the best lap shear adhesive strength, because this composite has the largest roughness. The hardness of the used adhesive is slightly increased with the cycle number.

Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber is widely used to prevent pollution flashover with its excellent hydrophobicity and hydrophobicity transfer. However, RTV coatings are at the risk of deterioration and failure in heavily polluted operating environment. In this paper, RTV coated insulators with different suspension heights operating in coal ash polluted areas were sampled. Pollution degree, pollution composition and aging degree of coatings were tested. The result shows that the insoluble pollution contains Al(OH)3 filler precipitated from RTV coating, which indicates the aging of the RTV coating. The top surface coating is more affected by ultraviolet and rainwater than the bottom surface resulting in more serious degradation. As the pollution degree of the lower phase insulator is heavier than that of the upper phase insulator, the erosion effect of pollution on the RTV coating is more intense. The fillers and rubber molecules of RTV continuously precipitate into the pollution layer, leading to further aging. Therefore, the overall aging degree of the lower insulator coating is more serious than that of the upper insulator coating.

Opis:
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in humor appreciation exhibited by people from various age groups. There are still few data on how aging affects the perception of humorous contents. The literature suggests that elderly people exhibit increasing difficulties in understanding jokes. The aim of the study was to analyze and compare the level of humorous content comprehension in people in early and late old age and to identify its determinants. The participants were 109 individuals with physiological aging, divided into two age groups: group < 70 y.o. and group ≥ 71 y.o. We used interview, Mini-Mental State Examination, and the Right Hemisphere Language Battery. In the Verbal Humor Appreciation test, older seniors gave significantly fewer correct answers than younger seniors. Women indicated more correct answers and fewer absurd ones than men. The ability to produce humor in old age is significantly predicted by the general state of mental functions and higher education. The scores on Verbal Humor Appreciation correlated with scores in Mini-Mental State Examination and with scores in the remaining tests on the RHLB battery. The ability to appreciate humorous contents appears to be dependent on age, gender, and the level of linguistic functions, conceptual thinking, sensitivity to prosodic elements, and discursive abilities. The results confirm the deterioration of processes significantly involving the right hemisphere with age.

Opis:
An observable feature of post-modernity is the social pressure that forces women and men, regardless of age, to accept the criteria for classifying and valuing the body in the context of a strongly rooted cult of attractiveness, with a youthful appearance at its center, and which is promoted by the mass media. While it is more realistic for younger people to meet these expectations, there can be many difficulties for those who experience progressive body aging. This article presents an analysis of statements made by elderly women and men, in which they share their definitions of attractiveness in general, as well as their opinions on the attractiveness of their appearance and how they evaluate it. The point of reference for these reflections is Catherine Hakim’s concept of erotic capital, in which the attractiveness of an individual is understood in a multidimensional way – including physical appearance, biogenic features, personality traits, and the demographic and social conditions of someone’s image. We are also based on the gendered age approach, i.e. femininity and masculinity are analyzed in the context of the desired appearance in relation to age (here, an old woman and an old man). The collected material leads to the conclusion that, to some extent, seniors have internalized social expectations concerning the appearance of the body of contemporary man, including the appearance of their aging bodies. However, the age of the respondents makes them pay attention to many more elements of human attractiveness than just physicality. Their gender also differentiated their views.

Machine tools are equipped with polycarbonate vision panels that allow the operator to observe the machining process and protect him from ejected fragments. Adequate protection is demonstrated by impact tests. However, polycarbonate is subject to aging processes, which diminish the protective performance of such panels. This paper presents an approach for modelling aging effects on the ballistic limit velocity of polycarbonate using Finite Element simulations. A Johnson-Cook material model in conjunction with variable failure criteria was used for the simulations. Aging effects on the ballistic limit velocity were included in the model by adjusting the failure criteria. Material parameters and failure criteria were derived from experimental impact and tensile tests on unaged and aged polycarbonate specimen. The numerical results predict the ballistic limit velocity with a maximum deviation of 0.98%. The model provides a more in-depth understanding of the aging effects on the safety performance of polycarbonate vision panels.

Argireline® is well know, innovative anti-aging product used in the cosmetic market. This short chain peptide is used as active ingredient in dermal ointment and creams. Argireline® prevents formation of skin lines and wrinkles in a very similar way to the botulinum toxin (Botox), inhibiting neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. Argireline® does not require under skin muscle injections and it is believed to be relatively safe. However, despite the fact that some toxicity data has been provided by the product manufacturer, there is an evident lack of reliable information about cytotoxicity of argireline® in the literature. The aim of the presented study was to estimate the antiproliferation effect of argireline® solution in several concentrations. The influence of argireline® on cellular proliferation was examined against: human embryonic kidney HEK-293 cell line, human neuroblastoma IMR-32 cell line, and human primary skin fibroblasts. Tests were performed using formazan-based cell proliferation assay: EZ4U, which allows to measure the efficiency of mitochondrial oxidative activity in living cells. The argireline® inhibitory concentration, IC50 values were calculated and the results were compared to the IC50 value of the reference compound: doxorubicin. In conclusion, the considered method resulted in dose-dependent argireline® anti-proliferation effects. However, the significant cytotoxicity of argireline® solution was observed under 18 to 10 000 fold higher concentrations (depending on cells that were examined) in comparison to doxorubicin.

Reaching the limit of cell divisions, a phenomenon referred to as replicative aging, of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae involves a progressive increase in the cell volume. However, the exact relationship between the number of cell divisions accomplished (replicative age), the potential for further divisions and yeast cell volume has not been investigated thoroughly. In this study an increase of the yeast cell volume was achieved by treatment with pheromone α for up to 18 h. Plotting the number of cell divisions (replicative life span) of the pheromone-treated cells as a function of the cell volume attained during the treatment showed an inverse linear relationship. An analogous inverse relationship between the initial cell volume and replicative life span was found for the progeny of the pheromone-treated yeast. This phenomenon indicates that attaining an excessive volume may be a factor contributing to the limitation of cellular divisions of yeast cells.

Mammalian somatic cells and also cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are capable of undergoing a limited number of divisions. Reaching the division limit is referred to, apparently not very fortunately, as replicative aging. A common feature of S. cerevisiae cells and fibroblasts approaching the limit of cell divisions in vitro is attaining giant volumes. In yeast cells this phenomenon is an inevitable consequence of budding so it is not causally related to aging. Therefore, reaching a critically large cell volume may underlie the limit of cell divisions. A similar phenomenon may limit the number of cell divisions of cultured mammalian cells. The term replicative (generative) aging may be therefore illegitimate.

Assessment of executive function in an aging populationThe aim of this article is to review the literature about changes in brain and behavior that occur in later life, with particular implications for age changes in executive function, which comprises those capacities that enable a person to engage successfully in organized, goal-directed, flexible behaviour. Neuropsychological evaluation is emphasized because brain changes play a prominent role in the behavioural disturbances in an aging population, i.e. over 65-year old. The article provides an overview of selected aging processes, i.e. executive control, efforful inhibition of motor or cognitive response, and set shifting. There is wide agreement that the neural systems of the prefrontal cortex underlie age differences in cognitive decline, both general and specific to planning and control processes. It has also been argued that the volume of the frontal lobes decrease more than other cerebral areas with age. Some distinguishing features of both normal aging and cerebral pathology (e.g., Parkinson’s disease) are descibed in order to present a neuropsychological picture of these conditions, which is essential for the process of differential diagnosis. Moreover, the importance of “ecologically” valid evaluating of executive function in older patients was underscored, since it may be valid indicators of outcome and behaviour in everyday life. A fundamental thesis is that the complexity of demands imposed by everyday life can lead to significant dysfunction even when fairly good performance is observed during formal neuropsychological testing.

The principal aim of this argument is to analyze the swift expansion in the proportion of older people across the globe, and to highlight the main social and economic forces causing this through methodological challenges especially through the lens of qualitative methodology. We recognize the enormity of the task. Drawing from a range of qualitative research studies provides enriched meanings about aging identity that can be used to shed light on how aging is experienced in equal to how it has been defined in macro or populational terms. Balancing micro and macro levels of understanding is key to open up broader level of explaining what it means to be an older person in different cultures Whilst this is a noble aim, there is no doubt that the rapid increase in population aging across the globe is signalling the most astonishing populational changes in the history of humankind that qualitative levels of understanding are uniquely placed to balance the huge figures in describing complex demography in that qualitative methodology unravels the facts and instead reveals the narratives, meanings and identity formation of research subjects; whereas statistical research has pre-dominantly made its findings looking at people as research objects or as a ‘number’ (Gruber and Wise 2004). The balance is key but this paper explores the issue of comparative aging underpinned by what Powell and Cook (2001) call ‘qualitative theorising’ in making sense of statistical and experiential aging.

Hermeneutical reading allowed for the creation of several images of autumn of life: a painful, marked by suffering attempts to overcome and suffering in a creative act; old age as a possibility of a deeper look at the spiritual dimension of human existence and old age reconciled with the laws of transiting the events immersed in the act of memorization.

Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO), czy Komisji Europejskiej, a dotyczący inwestycji w zdrowie publiczne i indywidualne.
The European Commission (EC) has identified active and healthy ageing (AHA) as a major societal challenge mutual to European countries. This issue has increased in importance due to the progressive ageing observed in European societies, that force authorities to take initiatives for support the activity of the elderly. One of the initiatives, widely recognised is The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, which strive to enabling EU citizens to lead healthy, active and independent lives while ageing. The positive effect of actions for the AHA will be extension of the life in good health duration of EU citizens by two years by 2020. This is an important issue, as in 2013, women who have reached the age of 65 years in UE28 were facing on average 21.3 years of further life years and only 8.6 years (on average this amounted for 40.4 % of life expectancy) accounted for living in health, whereas for males, this ratio was estimated on 8.5 years in health of the anticipated further 17.9 years (47.5% of further life duration). Life expectancy in good health in older age is influenced by many different factors, i.e. cultural, social, economic and accessibility to health services and the quality of provided treatment. The last aspect is related to both the economic development of the country and the health care system management. The significant factor that has been increasingly emphasised in documentation of World Health Organisation or European Commission, concerns the investment in public and individual health. Taking into account the multivariate impact of objective and subjective factors on life expectancy in good health of elderly, the Authors decided to conduct the multidimensional comparative analysis for EU countries, including Norway, Switzerland and Iceland as well. Among the objective factors Authors distinguished: proportion of population (men and women) aged 65 years and more, economic development of the countries measured by GDP per capita, healthy life years expectancy in absolute values for males and females at 65 years, health care expenditures in PPS per inhabitant aged 65+, whereas the group of subjective characteristics consisted of: self-perceived health for people aged 65+ and self-reported unmet needs for medical services. The article aims to investigate the relationship between the length of the further life in healthy for men and women aged 65 years and selected factors in European countries in the period 2005–2012. For this purpose, following methods were used: 1/ spatial distribution of characteristics – rates of change in selected periods: 2005 and 2012, 2/ tests for dependencies using correlograms and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients, 3/ cluster analysis: on the basis of Ward’s methods spatial similarities (among countries) were indicated. As the source of data the Eurostat database were used.

Opis:
In Poland, the aging process of the population is noticeably slower than in other European countries. The aging of Polish society concerns both municipal and rural areas. However, this process varies between these environments, both in terms of the pace and the scale of the problem. However, it is particularly significant that the forecasts indicate that rural areas will remain “younger” than urban areas in the future. The aim of the present paper was to attempt to answer the question whether the situation of elderly people from the rural areas of south-eastern Poland fit the concepts of successful aging. The paper is based on the results of a study conducted in 2017 among a group of 150 people aged 60+, living in the districts of Myślenice and Nowy Targ. On this basis, it is possible to state that the respondents are rather happy with their contacts with the environment, and express a moderately high degree of satisfaction with their health condition, are not very professionally active, and notice high shortages on the Polish market in terms of services and products aimed especially at elderly people. Thus we may assume that the subjective quality of the life of the respondents in the villages of the Małopolskie province is at an average level and that it creates the possibility of drawing conclusions on the moderate course of the process of successful aging in this environment.

Global aging is becoming a major challenge for contemporary lifelong education and social systems that are aimed and/or designed to satisfy the changing social, cultural and educational needs of the outgoing generation. In order to satisfy them, a great number of educational, religious and governmental institutions, and even the media, can participate therein. If we are serious about fulfilling the basic mental, social, cultural and educational needs of the “outgoing generation”, the current model of the university of the third age requires far-reaching changes and reforms, especially the spread of this idea on the European scale and a comprehensive programme and organization in order to satisfy such important human desires as the need to make sense of life, the need of self-realization, creativity, doing good and living an authentic, not simulated life, regardless old age, which is often seen as a painful shadow in arduous everyday reality.

Opis:
It is suggested that the fibrillar amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) in brain plays a direct role in neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease, probably through activation of reactive oxygen species formation. Free radicals and numerous neurotoxins elicit DNA damage that subsequently activates poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP, EC 2.4.2.30). In this study the effect of neurotoxic fragment (25-35) of full length Aβ peptide on PARP activity in adult and aged rat hippocampus was investigated. In adult (4 month old) rat hippocampus the Aβ 25-35 peptide significantly enhanced PARP activity by about 80% but had no effect on PARP activity in cerebral cortex and in hippocampus from aged (24-27 month old) rats. The effect of Aβ peptide was reduced by half by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N-nitro-L-arginine. Stimulation of glutamate receptor(s) itself enhanced PARP activity by about 80% in adult hippocampus. However, Aβ 25-35 did not exert any additional stimulatory effect. These results indicate that Aβ, through NO and probably other free radicals, induces activation of DNA bound PARP activity exclusively in adult but not in aged hippocampus.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Aging is a process that also affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) making it less adaptable to environmental and intrinsic stimuli and affecting its ability to maintain body homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the resting ANS function using heart rate variability (HRV) method and by noradrenaline measurement in aging, 2–12-months-old rats. Materials and method. Resting 15-minute-long ECG recordings were performed in anaesthetized rats with a subsequent spectral HRV analysis. Basic non-normalized HRV components in the range of very low (VLF), low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, along with the total HRV spectrum power (TP) were estimated. Moreover, normalized LF (nLF) and normalized HF (nHF) were calculated. Blood samples were also collected to assay plasma noradrenaline (NA) level. Results. In the overall assessment, plasma noradrenaline level as well as both TP and all non-normalized HRV components demonstrated a tendency for reduction when compared the first (2nd) and last (12th) months. In the case of nLF and nHF, a trend of nLF predominance in the 2nd and 3rd month was revealed while an inverse relation was observed from the 6th month on, with nHF superiority. Overall, males reached comparable or slightly higher NA and non-normalized HRV values compared to females, although most differences were not statistically significant. A parallel decline of LF (starting from the 10th month) and HF (from the 6th month) was demonstrated in both male and female animals. Female rats had a little more stable nLF and nHF course in the study time. Conclusions. Rat ANS aging is associated with global HRV decrease with parallel plasma NA decline, although without selective impairment of individual (sympathetic/parasympathetic) ANS components.

The purpose of this paper is to show the problems of old age in some contexts. In this paper there were discussed the terminological, theoretical, demographic and inclusive- exclusive context. The text addresses both the problems of how to interpret the concept of old age and aging, points to differences in the classification of old age and presents a multi aspects theory approaches of aging. It also emphasizes that not only the consequences of an aging population must be considered in relation to the very elderly, but also in relation to the functioning of society in terms of mental, economic, and social policy of the state. Therefore reflection on old age justifies the need of reducing stereotypes and creating special tools to prevent from social exclusion of older people.

The elastomeric anti-trauma pad (EA-TP) based on shear thickening fluid (STF) has been developed. Dynamic oscillatory shear experiment was conducted at constant strain amplitude of 5%. STF composed of 25% of volume fraction of 7 nm Fumed Silica, dispersed in polypropylene glycol with molar mass 400 gmol−1  shows elastic properties in entire investigated range of the frequency. Ballistic tests of EA-TP with 7.62 mm × 39 mm PS bullets were performed according to the PN-V-87000:2011 standard. The studies revealed about 60% reduction of the average backface signature depth (BSD) for the EA-TP, when compared to the nowadays commonly used soft insert. The ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed slight impact of the elevated temperature and air (oxygen) on the chemical degradation of the EA-TP surface. The UV-VIS spectroscopy has allowed to notice colour deviation of the aged samples towards green and yellow, as well as lack of dye resistance to accelerated aging process. Thermographic analysis has shown no visible changes of the EA-TP surface and sub-surface during accelerated aging process. The aforementioned small changes on the surface of EA-TP did not affect the ballistic properties of composite armour. EA-TP insert maintains ballistic properties after accelerated aging process which was simulating the period of 6 years according to ASTM F1980 – 07:2002 standard.

Opis:
In this study, variations in the contact resistance of electroplated Au-Fe alloy layers with Fe content were investigated. The contact resistance of electroplated Au-Fe alloy layers that were subject to thermal aging at 260°C in the atmosphere, tended to increase significantly with an increase in the Fe content. Through an analysis method employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), Ni oxides, such as NiO and Ni2O3, on the surface of the thermally aged electroplated Au-Fe alloy layers were observed. It is believed that the Ni oxide existing on the surface diffused from the underlying electroplated Ni layers to the surface through the grain boundaries in the electroplated Au-Fe layers during the thermal aging. As the Fe content in the electroplated Au-Fe layers increased, the grain size decreased. As the grain size decreases, more Ni oxide was detected on the surface. Therefore, with a rise in the Fe content, more Ni diffuses to the surface via grain boundaries, and more Ni oxide is formed on the surface of the electroplated Au-Fe layers, increasing the contact resistance of the electroplated Au-Fe alloy layers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of beta type aged Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X (X = V, Sn, Zr) quaternary alloy for use as a cardiovascular stent. Titanium (Ti) alloys were fabricated using a vacuum arc remelting furnace process. To homogenize the specimens of each composition and remove the micro segregation, all cast specimens were subjected to homogenization at 850°C for 4 h, which was 100°C higher than the β-transus temperature of 750°C. The tensile strength and elongation of the aged Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X (X = V, Sn, Zr) alloys were increased as compared to the homogenized alloys. In addition, many α/β interface boundaries formed after aging treatment at 450°C, which acted as inhibitors of strain and caused an increase in tensile strength. The elongation of Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X alloys consisting of α + β phases after aging treatment was improved by greater than 30%. Results of a potentiodynamic polarization test showed that the lowest current density of Ti-4Mo-4Cr-4Sn with1.05 × 10-8 A/cm2 was obtained. The present Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X alloys showed better corrosion characteristics as compared to the 316L stainless steel and L605 (Co-Cr alloy) cardiovascular stent alloys.

This study focuses on the effect of heat input on the quality characteristics of tungsten inert arc gas welded incoloy 800HT joints using inconel-82 filler wire. Butt welding was done on specimens with four different heat inputs by varying the process parameters like welding current and speed. The result indicated that higher heat input levels has led to the formation of coarser grain structure, reduced mechanical properties and sensitization issues on the weldments. The formation of titanium nitrides provided resistance to fracture and increased the tensile strength of the joints at high temperatures. Further aging was done on the welded sample at a temperature of 750°C for 500 hours and the metallographic result showed formation of carbides along the grain boundaries in a chain of discrete and globular form which increased the hardness of the material. The formation of spinel NiCr2 O4 provided oxidation resistance to the material during elevated temperature service.

Opis:
One of the most important determinants of successful aging is cognitive ability. Although cognitive decline is a well-documented phenomenon characteristic of aging, it is acknowledged that aging can also be related to cognitive neuroplasticity that allows one to compensate the decline and adapt to it. Cognitive neuroplasticity may be spontaneous or induced by external influences. An example of the former is compensatory brain activity in older adults, and the latter – improvement in cognitive functioning under the influence of cognitive training. Both the compensatory brain activity of older adults and the effectiveness of cognitive training in this age group have already been extensively studied. However, it has not yet been examined whether they can be linked. The article indicates theoretical and empirical premises for the possibility of influencing compensatory brain activity in older adults by cognitive training. In the most comprehensive way the phenomenon of compensatory brain activity in older adults is addressed by the STAC model – the Scaffolding Theory of Aging and Cognition, which also provides the theoretical grounds for the possible impact of cognitive training on compensatory brain activity. There are also empirical arguments in favour of such an impact, but they are quite limited in nature. The reason for this is the lack of research directly addressing the problem of the consistency of brain activity changes resulting from cognitive training with the assumptions of compensatory brain activity models, such as STAC. The theoretical grounds for the linkage of compensatory brain activity in older adults with the influence of cognitive training are clear. However, the analysis of the studies discussed in the article suggests that failing to embed the study design within the theoretical framework of compensatory brain activity in older adults may lead to the exclusion of factors important in drawing conclusions about this phenomenon. The following elements of the study design were identified as necessary to include: participation of young adults in the study as a reference group, usage of tasks in different difficulty levels during the measurement of brain activity and consideration of the relation between brain activity and cognitive performance, and comparison of brain activity in relation to cognitive performance before and after training in both, older and young adults.

Opis:
Individuals in the early stages of dementia may demonstrate language difficulties. The aim of the study was an evaluation of the differences in narrative discourse abilities across two types of dementia, i.e., Vascular Dementia (VaD) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in comparison to the young and old elderly. The AD and VaD groups displayed a lower performance than the age-matched YE on tasks involving reasoning. The VaD partici- pants outperformed patients with AD in verbal memory and narrative discourse. Discourse macrostructure analyses showed that the VaD reproduced more propositions than did the AD participants, but that these were comparable to YE and OE. There were more conjunctions in narratives reproduced by the VaD participants as compared to other groups, although this tendency was only present in the story but not in fairy tale reproductions themselves. Individ- uals in the AD group had more difficulties than YE and OE individuals in figuring out the moral of fairy tales. Clinical and control groups reproduced the microstructure and superstructure of texts comparatively well. Discourse recall correlated with performance on verbal memory, attention/working memory, and reasoning. Differences in narrative discourse abilities were found. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients scored lower in verbal memory than did Vascular Dementia (VaD) patients. Both groups however obtained lower results than the young and old elderly.

Opis:
This article describes the results of tribological research into epoxy-based composites reinforced with carbon fiber. The composites were subjected to accelerated tests simulating asemi-annual influence of environmental conditions of an elevated temperature, precipitation in combination with an influence of UV-A radiation of 0.83 W/m2 as well as cyclic thermal shocks causing a leap temperature difference of 116.5°C. The process of friction was conducted in conditions of dry friction and wet friction in the presence of water. The authors found apositive influence of a two-month impact of environmental conditions upon increasing wear resistance. They found a reduction in weight in conditions of friction with water. At the same time, a reliability analysis for the same boundary conditions showed an increased risk of critical composite damage. The article indicates areas of safe exploitation of composites and areas of the necessity of withdrawing composites from further exploitation under the assumed environmental and tribological loads.

Opis:
Objective: This paper provides a comprehensive investigation of coping with distress, with a focus on the proactive approach, which is of particular significance for individuals who manage identity transitions periods. Researchers discuss findings from two independent projects analyzing individual variation in strategies for coping with difficult situations at the extremes of life: adolescence and old age. Both studies were conducted between 2014 and 2016. Proactivity preferences were analyzed in a sample of 332 adolescents. Similarly, results collected among 1552 seniors were analyzed. The tools used in the analysis were the Proactive Coping Inventory for Adolescents (PCI-A) and the Proactive Coping Inventory for Adults (PCI). Results: Our findings show that the strategies preferred by the adolescent group included: proactive coping, looking for emotional support and preventive coping. Whereas the results for the elderly group showed their preference for looking for emotional support, reflective and preventive coping. Nevertheless the proactive coping strategy was chosen by adolescents as well as the elderly. The analysis performed demonstrated no significant difference in the reflective coping strategy for the compared age groups. Conclusions: The findings can be explained by theoretical accounts that question the classical developmental models with normative life trajectories and develop more person-oriented idiographic approach with decollectivisation of the life course thesis (Loos, 2012)  becoming increasingly evident.   Key words: proactiveness, adolescence, ageing, transition, identity, medical practise, education
