Opis:
The main aim of the article was to review measures of the population ageing process. In the first part, traditional (conventional) measures of population ageing are presented (i.e. old-age rate, median age, ageing index, dependency ratios, potential support ratio, parent support ratio). These measures are based on chronological age and give a coherent picture of population ageing. However, they do not take into account changes in life expectancy. In other words, they are based on the assumption that a 65-year-old person in 2000 is considered to be just as old as a 65-year-old person in 1900. But the probability of surviving in these two years is different: the remaining life expectancy at age 65 was much higher in 2000 than in 1900. Therefore, the second part of the article presents the new (alternative) measures of population ageing, which are adjusted to life expectancy. In particular, it describes the following measures: proportion of the population in age groups that have a remaining life expectancy of 15 years or less (Prop. RLE15-), prospective median age, population average remaining years of life, and prospective old-age dependency ratio. In the last section, the results of a comparison between conventional and alternative measures are presented. The new measures indicate a slower pace of population ageing in the future than the traditional ones. Thus, the measures recommended for designing governmental programmes aimed at the elderly are the new measures, which take into account life expectancy.

In this paper, the results of researches on lubricity and content analysis of the personal car’s engine oil are presented. The measurements of lubricity are made on the T02-U four-ball tester. The content analysis is made on the Spectroil Q100 spectrometer, which makes it available to measure the amount of 24 chemical elements. Due to this analysis, technical condition of the engine is possible to estimate. Tested oil is Shell Helix AV-L, which was exploited in the personal car, Volkswagen Touran, equipped with the turbo charged diesel engine, with the capacity of 2.0 litres. The samples for oil ageing characteristics were taken from the engine in the intervals approx. 3500 km. This research was performed as a result of the other studies on the dynamic viscosity characteristics. In the viscosity researches for this oil, was shown, that in the first period of the exploitation time, the viscosity decreases significantly. Detailed research on the additives and wear products content, as well as a lubricity characteristic, defines the reason of such a significant decrease of the oil properties. This paper is a part of a wider research on the oil ageing characteristics. It will support development to the new mathematical model of the lubricating oil viscosity changes during the exploitation time of the engine

Opis:
This paper is a part of the wider author’s research on the development of the new mathematical model for description of the viscosity changes of the lubrication oil in the exploitation time. Pressure of the oil is a variable parameter in the combustion engine and depends on many design parameters such as oil pump efficiency, geometry of the channels and lubricated element. It depends also on the exploitation parameters, such as rotational speed of the engine or contamination degree of the oil filter. So big amount of the factors, which have an influence on the pressure, resulted in the decision to examine, how big influence has a pressure in the oil viscosity. For the researches, the oil samples from the different combustion engines, both petrol and diesel, with different capacities, were taken into account. In each case, for the examination were taken samples both for the fresh oil and used oil from the change. Results of this research are shown in the tabular in correlation to the engines specification. In the next researches, after collecting all the oil ageing data, author will examine the pressure distribution in the slide bearing. After that it will be will possible to estimate the importance of the pressure changes for the proper work of the engine.

It is a process in which changes occur in population age structure and an increase in the number and proportion of older people (especially people aged over 65) in the general population, as well as a decrease in the number of young people This process leads to outcomes which, apart from demographic implications, are of socioeconomic significance and influence changes in the structure of consumption, income and savings distribution, decrease in labour productivity, changes in household structure, healthcare and social care for the elderly. This is why questions resulting from ageing of the population must be an element of adequate social policy. The aim of the paper is an evaluation of Poland’s population ageing by regions, in 1995-2035 years.

The progressive ageing process concerns both Poland and other Member States of the European Union. In recent years, the share of workers of non-mobile and post-productive age in the total population has been rising, and according to forecasts, in 2035 people aged 45 years and over will represent two-thirds of our society. Since the year 2012, announced the Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations by the European Commission, more and more attention has been paid in the Polish public space to the issues of an ageing society, including its impact on the health of the economy. The article notes that the ageing process does not occur uniformly across all Polish regions, i.e. at the same pace and with the same intensity. The results of studies indicating the regions being most vulnerable to the ageing of the regional community and the negative consequences of this process in the next two decades are presented.

The aim of this article is to present some aspects (both individual and collective) of the present and future situation of the elderly in the Western world, with particular stress on Poland. The authors examine a few contexts of aging as a stage of human life. Some aspects of the processes discussed here are relatively common whereas others have only gained importance in recent decades. This paper is composed of two parts. The first one, using socio-cultural anthropological, as well as historical data, describes various significant contexts of the present and approaching processes, focusing on the continued and changing perceptions of old age. The second part, based on the quantitative data delivered by statistical services and pooling centres, shows the most likely positions of various groups of the elderly in the Polish society in the perspective within the coming 25 years.

Opis:
Varistors are commonly used elements which protect power supply networks against high-voltage surges or lightning. Therefore, quality and endurance of these elements is important to avoid losses when an expensive laboratory equipment would not be protected from random overvoltages. Additionally, excessive leakage currents generate serious costs due to high energy consumption. The paper presents shortly properties of varistors that comprized different ZnO grain types and can have various quality which changes continuously during exploitation (due to exposition to overheating and overvoltage pulses). Therefore, it is important to monitor varistors during their ageing (causing changes within their microstructures). A few methods of varistor property diagnosis were considered and compared with the methods currently applied in laboratory or industry applications. A new measurement (diagnostic) system that can monitor varistors during ageing and can be widely applied in power networks is presented. The proposed system fulfills requirements of the industrial customers which demand various methods for power line protection. The proposed system can be simply developed into a more advanced wireless diagnostic system of long power supply lines.

Because of the growing operational age of nuclear power plants, the ageing management of structures, systems and components used in these plants is gaining an important role. Technical systems are subject to timedependent and operationally caused ageing phenomena with modifications of originally given characteristics and, thus, of relevance in terms of safety. Especially physical ageing is of importance. Therefore, a comprehensive ageing management is required. In the context of an integrated safety management it has to be shown how to integrate the safety related issues of ageing into probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). In particular the question is to be answered whether the effort for the execution of an ageing PSA is justified, in particular if the safety significant effects of ageing can be identified and quantitatively estimated. Method for prioritization of the components in the nuclear power plant considering implication of their ageing on safety of the nuclear power plant is presented. On the basis of an actual report on ageing management in German nuclear power plants and a literature survey, this paper tries to estimate the necessity and value for the introduction of an ageing PSA in Germany.

Demographic changes seen in Europe represent the challenge for social protection system and for the job market. In most countries of European Union we can see a clear tendency to increase retirement age. In our country breaking the reluctance towards the attempts of increasing retirement age appears to be difficult, and only a small percentage of employees decide to continue their professional career after coming to retirement age. The aim of research was to deepen the diagnosis concerning the phenomenon of low professional activity of women being at retirement age by looking into intergeneration differenc- es. Results shows negative attitude to the idea of professional activity in the old age, which is motivated mainly by health problems, labor market conditions and women’s double burden.

The aim of this study was to assess handgrip and 5 other types of force in 52 women and to determine if handgrip force reflected general upper limb force capabilities correlated with age. The women were divided into subgroups according to age: 20–25, 45–50 and 55–65 years. Maximum forces of the right upper limb were measured in 6 types of force activities. In most tests the values of force showed statistically significant differences between the 20–25 group and the groups aged 45–50 and 55–64 years. The results did not show any differences related to age or to force activities that involved the small muscles of the forearms and hands. Thus handgrip force cannot always be considered an indicator of total force capabilities.

The motivation of this paper is to check whether inflation is linked to the population age structure. To check this hypothesis, a panel data model is used. We regress the changes in CPI on a set of macroeconomic variables. The results of the estimations suggest that there may be a relation between demography and low-frequency inflation. A larger old-age dependency ratio is correlated with lower inflation. This may confirm some of the previous empirical findings that ageing is deflationary when related to increased life expectancy.

The population aging process, which intensified in Poland at the turn of the 20th and the 21st centuries, was particularly intensive in cities. Its pace and size were conditioned by the economic situation of urban centers and how they managed to go through the economic transformation. Contemporary cities, and the socio-demographic processes taking place in them, are increasingly associated with neighbouring rural hinterland, creating functional urban areas (FUA). The aim of the article is to examine the pace and spatial diversity of the aging process in the functional urban areas in Poland. The 151 FUAs divided into six hierarchical levels were studied. The advancement of the aging process of residents of the FUAs has been studied, taking into account their division into the core and the external zone. The study indicates that in the analysed period the aging of the FUA’s population was faster than in the other, peripheral areas of the country. It should be noted, however, that the official data used in this study do not include unregistered migration outflow from peripheral areas, which can affect the level of ageing of their residents. At the beginning of the 1990s, the aging process was the most advanced in the FUAs which were the highest in the hierarchy, however, with the passage of time, its convergence took place. On the other hand, within individual types of FUA’s, the division into more advanced cores and “younger” outer zones is maintained.

The article discusses selected demographic problems of the city, including the ageing of the society, showing their changeability in time and space. The juxtaposition of the spatial arrangement of the facilities which undertake actions benefitting the elderly with the areas of high concentration of seniors’ homes shows that the access to the former is satisfactory. On the other hand, taking into account the range of actions related to the senior-oriented policy, a unique innovativeness in regards to the issue does not appear to distinguish the city of Łódź from other cities.

The aim of this paper is to make a quick overview of the literature concerning not only the variety of concepts of ageing and activities that older people may take in their free-time, but also the significance of intergenerational family relationships, especially the grandparents-grandchildren relationship. On this background authors’ own research on this topic is presented. The obtained results confirmed the hypothesis that younger grandparents are more vital and have more free-time activities than the older. Moreover, the findings indicate the importance of role that grandparents may play in grandchildren’s life (‘stabilizer’, ‘family national guard’, ‘arbiter’, ‘historian’) regardless of their age. It is also shown that with increasing age and declining social networks grows the need to maintain close contact with younger generations of the family.

Introduction. The ageing society of Poland still experiences health-related problems and increasing difficulties in receiving medical care. The initiation of telemedicine programmes can change this situation for the better. The question arises whether telemedicine is a solution that the elderly are willing to accept and take advantage of in order to raise their quality of life. Objective. The aim of the research was an investigation of the quality of life and the course of ageing among the elderly Polish population, and their openness to the notion of telemedical services. Materials and method. A questionnaire-based study was conducted in 2015 on a sample group of 312 seniors. The respondents completed the Diener Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the subscale of Health States from Fragebogen zur Lebenszufriedenheit (FLZ) by Fahrenberg et al. Each participant gave consent to take part in the research. Results. SWLS presents a relatively stable value in the subsequent decades of old age (60–69 years, M=21.93, SD=6.25; 70–79 years, M=21.70, SD=5.52; 80+yeasrs, M=21.38, SD=5.82). The health related quality of life (the FLZ subscale) varied in the analysed subgroups (F=7.783: p=0.000) and was related to comorbidity and polytherapy. A positive attitude towards telemedicine was expressed by 40% of those surveyed. However, the need of the seniors for telemedicalservices was limited and did not exceed the 10%. Conclusions. In Poland, in ageing there still dominates the experience of multiple ailments and polytherapy, something which justifies a search for new, easily accessible, and economically sound solutions for health care. Telemedicine is a promising solution, although there is a need for definite steps to be taken to increase the willingness among geriatric patients to take advantage of telemedicine.

Opis:
The dynamics of demographic changes manifested in the processes of an ageing population affect Poland. In response to the situation, gerontechnology is emerging as an interdisciplinary field of scientific research in which technology is directed towards the aspirations and opportunities of the older persons. One of the examples of technologies that will be able to support the ageing population in the future are humanoids, that is, robots resembling a human being and equipped with artificial intelligence. The purpose of this article was to examine relationships between trust in the use of humanoids to care for the older people, the usefulness of technology, the ease of use, perceived threats, general trust and trust in science and technology. A survey method was used to collect data for research. The electronic questionnaire survey was disseminated among members of the Polish society. 643 filled questionnaires were received.

Opis:
First, basic notions of the multistate system safety analysis are introduced, i.e. the multistate components and the multistate system, the multistate system component safety function, the multistate system safety and the multistate system risk function are defined. Moreover, the multistate system component and the multistate system main safety characteristics, i.e. their mean values of the lifetimes and in the safety state subsets and in the particular safety states and standard deviations and the moment when the system risk function exceeds a fixed permitted level are determined. Furthermore, there are constructed safety models of the multi-state homogeneous and non-homogeneous series, parallel, “m out of n”, consecutive “m out of n: F”, series-parallel, parallel-series, series-“m out of n”, “m out of n”-series, series-consecutive “m out of n: F” and consecutive “m out of n: F”-series systems and their safety functions are determined. Moreover, a very often met in practiceseries system composed of multistate subsystems identical with the considered earlier multistate systems is considered and its safety function is determined.

Basic notions of the ageing multistate systems safety analysis are introduced. The system components and the system multistate safety functions are defined. The mean values and variances of the multistate systems lifetimes in the safety state subsets and the mean values of their lifetimes in the particular safety states are defined. The multi-state system risk function and the moment of exceeding by the system the critical safety state are introduced. The exemplary safety structures of the multistate systems with ageing components are defined and their safety functions are determined. As a particular case, the safety functions of the considered multistate systems composed of components having exponential safety functions are determined. Applications of the proposed multistate system safety models to the evaluation and prediction of the safty characteristics of the exemplary series, parallel, “m out of n”, consecutive “m out of n: F”, series-parallel, parallel-series and “m out of l”-series systems are presented as well.

Opis:
Competencies are a crucial factor of professional position and career development. The aim of this paper is the assessment of the competencies of people in late productive age using exploratory factor analysis. The second point is the critical review of the theory and practice on exploratory factor analysis. The empirical analysis is based on the Study of Human Capital data. The survey results confirm the necessity of the factor analysis in research in the area of human capital in the context of ageing. The constructed synthetic indicators allowed for a synthetic assessment of the competencies of Poles aged 50-59/64. The results of the conducted analysis confirm the large significance of all the 24 analysed competencies. The competencies of Poles aged 50-59/64 were decomposed into three groups: (1) soft competencies and physical fitness (2) computer skills and (3) availability and technical competencies.

Opis:
This paper is a compilation of facts about women who shone in their youth either for their research, their works of art, or their social and political activities, and who remained active in their later years, when they became what are commonly called senior citizens. It was during these years that these brilliant women managed to crystallise and consolidate the work they had done all of their life, bringing about changes in scientific, artistic, cultural and social fields, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge for future generations. A small host of women representing different disciplines has been chosen here, and all of these women were active in their later life. Many others who could have been included will not be found, not only because there is not enough space here to mention all of them here, but also because there is a lack of sources dealing with the millions of senior heroines who are anonymous; elderly women who play a vital role in the development of humanity when they pass on knowledge and values; women who remain active in their later years and who only retire the day they die

Opis:
The results of investigations on the microstructure of T23 and T24 low-alloy steels as well as P91 and P92 high-chromium steels in the as-received condition and after 70.000 h annealing at 550-650°C are presented. The quantitative analysis of the existing precipitates was performed for representative images of microstructure. The statistical analysis of collected data allowed the parameters of a selected theoretical statistical distribution to be estimated. A forecast of average precipitate diameter and standard deviation of such a distribution for the time of 100,000 hours at 550 and 600°C for T23 and T24 steels and at 600 and 650°C for P91 and P92 steels was calculated. The obtained results of investigations have made it possible to compare changes in the microstructure of various steel grades due to long-term impact of elevated temperature. They have also confirmed the possibility of using, in evaluating the degradation degree of materials in use, the forecasting methods that derive from mathematical statistics, in particular the theory of stochastic processes and forecast by analogy methods. The presented approach allows the development of a forecast of precipitate diameter probability density under the microstructure instability conditions for selected steel grades. The assessment of material condition that takes into consideration, but is not limited to, the precipitate diameter measurement is useful as an assessment component in estimating the time of safe service of power unit elements working under creep conditions.
