Opis:
In this work the nanocomposites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) host matrix with porous silicon and ZnO nanoparticles were manufactured. The charge transport and relaxation processes in organic-inorganic nanocomposites were analyzed based on complex studies of electrical conductivity and depolarization current in the wide temperature range. By means of impedance spectroscopy we have established that increase of content of ZnO nanoparticles causes the rise in the internal resistance of the hybrid films. Based on the spectra of thermally stimulated depolarization current the localized electron states in the experimental samples are found. The combination of the porous silicon and zinc oxide nanoparticles provides an increase of surface area of the sensors and their high sensitivity to water molecules.

Opis:
Polymer-based nanocomposites containing biocompatible and bioactive nanocomponents seem to be excellent materials that could be used in many biomedical applications. The aim of this study was biological evaluation of resorbable polymer-based nanocomposites (PLA, PCL) and their modifications with ceramic nanoparticles (silica - $SiO_2$, montmorillonite - MMT) or carbon nanotubes. The nanocomposites were seeded with the human osteoblast-like MG 63 cells. After 1, 3 and 7 days of incubation, Trypan blue exclusion test was used to determine the viability and number of cells. The cell population density depending on incubation time and cell population doubling time was calculated. The cell proliferation abilities on the all applied nanocomposites and on control material (polystyrene cell culture plate) were also compared. The number of cells growing on the nanocomposite surfaces increased with the incubation time. The cell viability was not decreased for all applied materials during the entire study (97-100%). The ceramic nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes modified the bone cell growth and proliferation rate. Results of this study confirm that all types of the nanocomposites are appropriate to the growing and proliferation of human osteoblast-like cells.

Structure and magnetic properties of the thermal decomposition products of Fe(III)Co(II) acrylate complex were analysed. The crystalline phases, which were found in the fully processed material, at 643 K, were Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$, CoFe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{4}$, and CoO and had a mean particle size of about 30 nm. In the intermediate stages of the thermolysis iron was present in a form of Fe$\text{}^{III}$ (trivalent low-spin iron), Fe$\text{}^{2+}$ (divalent high-spin iron), and Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$. The coercivity and remanence were measured versus temperature in the range of 5-300 K, in 1.1 T applied field. Both, $\text{}_{M}$H$\text{}_{c}$ and M$\text{}_{r}$, decreased showing room temperature values of 0.038 T and 7.49 mT, for coercivity and remanence, respectively. At temperatures below 200 K the hysteresis loops were asymmetrical, opened and shifted towards negative field values.

We report on the influence of plasmon resonance in spherical gold nanoparticles on the optical properties of light-harvesting complex LH2 from the purple bacteria Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Systematic studies as a function of the excitation energy and the separation distance indicate that metal enhanced fluorescence shows strong dependence upon both of these parameters. We observe substantial increase of the fluorescence from LH2 complex in a hybrid nanostructure with 12 nm silica spacer. On the other hand, the enhancement measured with laser tuned into the plasmon resonance is almost threefold compared to the off-resonance configuration. The enhancement of fluorescence intensity originates in both cases from the increase of carotenoid absorption in the LH2 complex.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the filler (kaolin) modification with silane coupling agents on the properties of the polyethylene (HDPE Hostalen ACP 5831) composites. Powder mineral fillers are added to polymers to modify the properties of the latter and to reduce the cost of their production. A very important factor is the filler dispersion in the polymer matrix. Kaolin modified with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and pure kaolin were characterised by surface area, pore size, water absorbing capacity, paraffin oil absorbing capacity, bulk density, scanning electron microscopy observations and X-ray diffraction measurements. Their performance was characterised by determination of the mechanical resistance upon static stretching and tearing, and their structure was observed in scanning electron microscopy images. The results were compared to those obtained for the composites with unmodified filler and pure HDPE.

Polyester and polyesterimide compounds for impregnating of electrical motors were modified by incorporating of three kinds of nanofillers: zinc oxide, fumed nanosilica and titanium dioxide so as to improve their properties. Nanosized particles were added at 1 wt.% of loading and homogeneously dispersed in polyester and polyesterimide matrix. The results on mechanical, electrical and barrier properties of standard and nanofilled compounds were compared. Thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis showed that thermal stability of nanofilled compounds was significantly higher. Also the electrical and bonding strength of nanofilled impregnating compounds increased and at the same time water absorption decreased. The highest improvement of properties owing to nanofillers was obtained in the case of nanosilica.

Nanocomposite polymer scaffolds for tissue engineering were prepared using leaching method. As a porogen there were used phosphate salts with different grain size (100-400 μm). Nanocomposite materials based on polylactide (PL/DLA) containing 2 wt% of ceramic bioactive nanoadditives $(SiO_2)$ were prepared. The nanoadditive was characterized by dynamic light scatering (DLS) (size) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (specific surface area) methods. Morphology of the nanoparticles was observed using the transmission electron microscopy. The optimal concentration of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix was evaluated on the basis of in vitro tests of the nanocomposite foils contacted with osteoblast-like human cells of MG63 line. The morphology and porosity of the scaffold after leaching was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and hydrostatic weighing. The bioactivity test made on the scaffolds demonstrated ability to nucleation of apatite structure on the material.

We begin with a pair of spherical particles encapsulated in a micelle and solve the problem within the self-consistent field theory to investigate the morphology transformation of the micelle induced by two nano-particles. The micelles are based on amphiphilic diblock copolymer AB in homopolymer A solvents. The nano-particles are simple models of proteins or colloids. We predict different micelle structures, and relate these morphologies to particle sizes, distances between two particles, and chemical potentials of the amphiphile molecules. There are found complex structures of the micelle induced by the twin particles: many reverse micelles only with even numbers or only one micelle attached at one of the two particles. These results are of immediate interests to the interactions of micelles and particles, as well as to the transitions between vesicles and micelles.

We present experimental results on the production of ZnO nanoparticles with second harmonic of pulsed nanosecond Nd:YAG laser (λ=532 nm, pulse duration=5 ns) in tetrahydrofuran with 0.0 wt% and 0.8 wt% concentrations of polystyrene by high (200 mJ pulse energy) and moderate (80 mJ pulse energy) pulse energies. The produced colloids were characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorption, transmission electron microscopy, room temperature photoluminescence emission and dynamic light scattering. The mean size of nanoparticles decreased from 40 nm to 22 nm by adding polymer (0.8 wt%) and increasing the pulse energy. The colloidal nanocomposites showed a shoulder at 360 nm in ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and were found very stable for one month. We observed two photoluminescence emission peaks in UV region at 380 nm and 400 nm attributed to exciton transition. Dynamic light scattering indicated that the size and aggregation of nanocomposites were controlled by polymer concentration and pulse energy.

Three different kinds of polymer films, poly (divinylbenzene), poly (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and poly (vinyl alcohol), containing M-type hexagonal barium ferrites (BaFe12O19) were synthesized on glass substrates by using surface polymerization method. The structural properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. X-ray diffraction patterns show that polymer films have a polycrystalline structure. The magnetic measurement of polymer films were examined at room temperature using vibrating sample magnetometer and magnetic force microscopy, respectively. The magnetic measurements indicate that P(VA)-BF films exhibit higher saturation magnetization and coercive field than P(EGDMA)-BF and P(DVB)-BF films.

Magnetic sponges derived from biocompatible and resorbable polymers are promising materials for medical applications. These materials have been utilised extensively in research applications for the capture of biomolecules and cells, the construction of tissue scaffolds and in regenerative medicine. The object of this study was a polymer scaffold made of polycaprolactone (PCL) containing a 10 wt% amount of nanomagnetite, manufactured in a two-step method. The porosity and morphological parameters were characterised with the use of μ-computer-aided tomography and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the magnetic properties were evaluated. The obtained results confirmed high porosity and the appearance of randomly oriented pores. Moreover, evaluations of the magnetic properties, of both the magnetite nanopowder and the prepared magnetic nanocomposite, were performed. The tests verified the ferromagnetic character of the materials under investigation.

Recently PF resins can be also prepared by the addition of urea because urea accelerates cure process of PF resin, reduces the cost and improves its strength performance. Clays have long been used as inorganic fillers in polymer systems because of low cost, availability and improved thermal properties of resulting polymer composites. Clay nanocomposites of different types yield a marked increase in a number of properties of thermoplastic and other resins and composites. This study investigates the variation of thermal properties of PUF/colored organoclay nanocomposites with increased colored clay ratio. For this the DSC, XRD, FT-IR and HRTEM analyses were made. The XRD patterns and HRTEM images showed that clay platelets were exfoliated at the lower contents of organoclay, whereas at the higher content of organo clay tactoids were observed. The XRD analysis results implied that the amorphous behaviour increased with increased content of colored organoclay. The DSC thermograms indicated that glassy transition temperature (T_{g}) was increased, appearing prominent crystallization peaks at the lower ratios of organoclay. The T_{g} value was partially decreased and the peak intensities gradually decreased with increased content of clay. The thermogram for composite with clay content of 20% was similar to the thermogram of virgin resin. This can be attributed to the shifting of the textural structure for this composite from prominent crystalline structure to amorphous one.

In this short paper we illustrate the versatility of positron annihilation lifetime spectrometry when used for material characterisation by presenting a selection of recent lifetime studies carried out on novel polymeric materials with a wide range of potential industrial applications. We highlight the importance of local free volume in governing the macroscopic properties (e.g. permeation properties, mechanical strength) of these materials and how lifetime measurements can be used in conjunction with a number of complementary techniques in order to establish composition-structure-property relationships for these systems.

The aim of this study is the investigation of the effects of an intumescent system, consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), as a flame retardant additive, pentaerythritol (PER), as a carbonic agent, and nanoclay, as a synergistic agent, on the flame retardancy of plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA). In accordance with this purpose, plasticized and flame retarded PLA with APP compound was prepared and used as a control sample. Nanoclay loading levels were changed between 3 and 10 wt.% in the PLA/APP/PER samples. Samples were produced using extrusion and injection molding techniques. The morphological, thermal, mechanical and flammability properties were studied. The flammability evaluation was performed using limiting oxygen index and vertical burning (UL-94) tests. The obtained limiting oxygen index value was up to 32.9 and UL-94 grade could pass V-0 for samples, containing 3 wt.% of nanoclay. However, increasing nanoclay amount has enhanced the burning time of the sample. The thermal behaviors of the samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown, that PER incorporation did not significantly change the percentage crystallinity value. The increasing nanoclay loading levels reduced the degree of crystallization. Elongation at break value of sample, containing 5 wt.% of nanoclay, increased by 28%, compared to the control sample.

Very cold neutrons (VCN) scattering method was used to study the morphology of polyolefine based nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were prepared by the melt mixing method. The special surface active additions and the fillers surface modification were used to improve the polymer-filler compatibility. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), the calcium carbonate (CC) submicron particles and the layered natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) nanoparticles were used as the fillers. The fractal structural model was used to describe the VCN scattering on the nanofillers agglomerates. It was shown by VCN scattering that the volume part of isolated MWCNTs in polypropylene (PP) based composites decreases with the increase of the filler loading, the density of MWCNT packing in agglomerates increases with the total volume nanotube concentration and decreases with the nanotube surface modification. It was revealed that the isolated CC particles are dominated in the CC/PP samples with low CC (5 vol.%) loading. It was shown that practically full MMT exfoliation within polyethylene (PE) matrix can be achieved by both polymerization exfoliation method and by melt mixing compounding with using special polar polymer additions.
