Opis:
Formation of spatially non-uniform mechanical tension in a transparent solid due to the lattice ionization under the intensive ultrashort laser pulses action is predicted and theoretically described. Within the framework of the continual theory of elasticity the estimation of both average values of deformation tensor and its variations in solid dielectric with non-uniform random distribution of ions was carried out. It was shown that three possible types of medium modification can arise in solid depending on its ionization degree and the thickness of ionized layer. Since the Coulomb fields inside ionized layer can be non-uniform, all three types of structuring can arise in solid simultaneously.

Nanobubble dynamics in the spider-spinning procedure is elucidated, and a theoretical model is established to show why spider drag-line silk protein assemblies have extraordinary strength and toughness. Suggested by the spider-spinning, a bubble electrospinning is investigated for mass production of nanofibers within diameters 20 nm. El Naschie's E-infinity theory is a universal theory for nanotechnology. It is concluded that smaller is the way to have excellent thermal and electric conductivity, in fact the smaller, the better.

Opis:
Direct laser interference lithography is a new and low cost technique which can generate the line- or dot-like periodic patterns over large areas. In the present work, we report on direct fabrication of micrometer structures on Si surface. In the experiments the pulsed high power Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm wavelength was used. Two-beam configuration with an angle of incidence of 40° was employed and different laser fluences up to 2.11 J/$cm^2$ were tested. Areas about 1 cm in diameter have been processed with a single pulse of 10 ns. The laser treated samples were analyzed by atomic force microscopy to investigate the surface topography and to measure the size and depth of the achieved structures. We observed periodic line-like arrays with grating period of the order of 1 μm.

Opis:
This study reports on the development of some W-Cu-Ni materials for use as electrical contacts for low voltage vacuum switching contactors for nominal currents up to 630 A. The contact materials with 85 wt% W, 12-14 wt% Cu and 1-3 wt% Ni were obtained by spark plasma sintering process in vacuum. From very finely dispersed W-Cu-Ni powder mixtures there were produced sintered electrical contact pieces that were investigated in terms of physical, microstructural, mechanical, and functional properties. The material sintered at 1200C exhibited a near fully dense structure with very low porosity and enhanced mechanical properties: hardness of maximum 480 HV1 and elastic modulus of maximum 220 GPa and low chopping current of maximum 1.77 A.

Opis:
The ferrite magnetic nanoparticles with core-shell structures were obtained in two step preparation process. The Mössbauer spectra obtained for particles of pure maghemite or magnetite and two layered core-shell one the magnetite on maghemite and maghemite on magnetite are very different from each other. The presented results show that interparticle and intraparticle interaction plays important role in overall magnetic properties as well.

Pulsed laser interference is applied to metallic and semiconductor thin films in the thickness range of 40-100 nm. At intensities which induce local melting we observe local retraction of the molten material towards the unmolten areas due to dewetting. Thus micropatterning of surface gets feasible. Although this dewetting induced retraction should be a common behaviour of metals on oxide surfaces, two groups of materials can be distinguished. In the first group the former molten areas get completely blank of metal while in the second group a material droplet remains in the center of the molten area. We show that this behaviour can be attributed to a distinctly different way of liquid movement upon local melting.

Ceramic-metal composites are usually prepared by sintering ceramic with metal or metal oxide powders. An alternative technique is sintering ceramic powders coated by metal film. In the present study, the Ni coated Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ powder was obtained by chemical reduction reaction. We used the phosphate bath for deposition of nickel-phosphorus on the surface of Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ powder. The thickness and chemistry of Ni-P coating depend on the time and the parameters of the reaction process. Particles of Ni-P precipitate from a solution in two different forms: (a) spherical nanoparticles of Ni-P (50 nm) which grow on the surface of Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ powder and can form tight, one diameter thick film; (b) large agglomerates of loosely connected spherical nanoparticles with a 50÷150 nm diameter. The method proposed in this study allows obtaining Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ powder covered with Ni-P nanoparticles in the forms of thin film or single nanoparticles, mixed with loose Ni-P agglomerates.

In this work we have studied the NO2 sensing properties of the sensors with tetrapods. The tetrapods that were used in the production were obtained by CVD route, and their structural analysis was carried out using SEM, XRD and EDX methods. The sensors were produced by a different method that the one mentioned in our another work, and additional electrical I-V characterization was carried out. As well as in the previous work the sensors were tested for 50 ppm sensitivity, by using computer controlled gas flux system, in NO₂ at 200°C, and in ambient air to model the normal working conditions more closely. It was found that the sensors have a good sensitivity to the NO₂ gas. All of the sensors showed a great reversibility and it was found that the recovery time was perfectly low. After this experiment the same sensors were tested with other different gases for several times. And no other problems in sensing ability were seen.

Opis:
Reduction of thermal conductivity remains a main approach relevant to enhancement of figure-of-merit of most thermoelectric materials. Melt spinning combined with spark plasma sintering appears to be a vital route towards fine-grain skutterudites with improved thermoelectric performance. However, upon high-temperature processing the Fe_{4-x}Co_{x}Sb_{12}-based skutterudites are prone to decompose into multiple phases, which deteriorate their thermoelectric performance. In this study we addressed the effects of combined melt spinning and spark plasma sintering on the phase composition and microstructural properties of filled Fe_{4-x}Co_{x}Sb_{12} as well as their influence on thermoelectric characteristics of these compounds. The crystallites of filled Fe_{4-x}Co_{x}Sb_{12} were effectively reduced to sizes below 100 nm upon melt spinning, but also severe decomposition with weakly preserved nominal phase was observed. Spark plasma sintering of melt spun skutterudites resulted in even further reduction of crystallites. Upon short annealing and sintering the n-type materials easily restored into single-phase filled CoSb₃ with nanoscale features preserved, while secondary phases of FeSb₂ and Sb remained in p-type compounds. Relatively high figure-of-merit ZT_{max} of 0.9 at T ≈ 400°C has been gained in nanostructured Yb_{x}Co₄Sb_{12}, however, no significant reduction of thermal conductivity was observed. Abundant impurities in p-type filled Fe_{4-x}Co_{x}Sb_{12} led to drastic drop in their ZT, which even further degraded upon thermal cycling.

Pure and 10 mol% $Fe^{3+}$ doped $CeO_2$ nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrothermal method using two different basic solutions ($NH_4OH$ and NaOH). All the samples were calcinated at 140°C and 200°C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.
