We discuss the influence of an external magnetic field on the exciton energy and the exciton oscillator strength in the shallow quantum wells. We include into consideration the Coulomb attraction between electron and hole, which is rarely taken into account. We self-consistently solve the Schrödinger equation to compare the obtained results with the experimental values.

We have employed the density functional theory plane-wave pseudopotential method with local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation to investigate the structural, elastic and mechanical properties of the intermetallic compound NiGa. The calculated equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus are in good agreement with the experimental and other calculated values. According to our best knowledge, from the elastic constants, the bulk modulus B, anisotropy factor A, shear modulus G, the Young modulus E and the Poisson ratio σ for NiGa compound are obtained for the first time. By comparison, our results for the elastic constants C_{ij}, bulk modulus B, shear modulus G and the Young modulus E are as good as those of NiAl compound. The dependences of the elastic and mechanical parameters of NiGa compound on pressure were also investigated. It was found that the cubic NiGa compound is mechanically stable under pressure according to the elastic stability criteria up to 13 GPa, and it is not elastically isotropic. By analyzing the ratio (B/G), it was concluded that NiGa compound is ductile in nature.

Syntactic foams are closed cell structured foam materials and present improved properties for lightweight and high performance material requests. They have been widely used in naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering applications on account of their good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, dielectric properties. In this study, a novel high strain rate sensitive syntactic foam was developed. A rigid polyurethane resin was used as a binder material. Glass bubbles were used as an additive for producing cell structure. Elastomeric silicone rubber resin were used to change elastic properties of the foam as an additional binder material. Quasistatic compression properties and high strain rate compression properties were obtained by using Instron Universal Tensile-Compression Machine and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experimental setup respectively. The results show that developed foams are low dense and very high strain rate sensitive materials. Consequently, developed foam can be used for the blast, impact or ballistic mitigation purpose as a coating material.

The $λ^{2}$ dependence on acoustic field intensity (and hence RF drive power) can render large aperture acousto-optic tunable filters impractical for many applications beyond about 2 μm. One potential technique for reducing the RF drive-power requirement is to configure an acousto-optic tunable filter such that the interaction region is at acoustic resonance. We describe an acousto-optic tunable filter that operates at resonance and present an analysis of the predicted performance. In addition, we address the practical issues in deploying such a scheme. Finally, we present results of a prototype "resonant acousto-optic tunable filter" operating in the 1-2 μm region.

The electronic properties and structural phase transition of bulk rhodium hydride are analyzed using density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximations. The sequent phase transition is observed in bulk rhodium hydride. The predicted new high pressure phase of rhodium hydride is hexagonal NiAs type. The atomic geometry, adsorption energy, and binding energy of the Rh (111) surface are computed. The calculated surface energy for Rh (111) surface is 1.06349 eV and the maximum adsorption energy is obtained in 6×1 phase as 2.8617 eV. The relaxed geometries show that hydrogen has a strong influence on the interlayer distance.

A theoretical study of the phase transition of samarium monochalcogenides using three-body interaction potential model is carried out at high pressure. The three-body interaction potential includes long range Coulombic, three-body interaction forces and short range overlap repulsive forces operative up to next nearest neighbor ions. We have investigated phase transition pressures, volume collapses, elastic behavior, stability criteria and various thermo physical properties at various high pressure. The results found are well suited with available experimental data. In this paper third order elastic constants are also reported for the first time which helps in understanding the nature of interionic forces in ionic solids which paved the experimentalist to work in specific direction.

This paper presents and discusses the results of the instrumented indentation test of the samples of the system $Bi_{x}(As₂S₃)_{100-x}$, x= 1.5, 3, 5, and 7 at.%. Measurements of mechanical parameters were performed using a Fischerscope HM2000 S nanoindentation device. The experimental data obtained by measuring the microhardness parameters were used to determine some other mechanical quantities that are important for the characterization of the examined materials in terms of their potential applications. For the first three compositions, the results indicated an increase in the microhardness with the increase in the content of doping atoms, which can be interpreted as an enhancement of the strength and stiffness of the structural network. The lower value of microhardness of the sample with the maximum content of Bi can BE associated with the specific structure of this composition. The pronounced indentation size effect was also detected on the indentation curve in the range of smaller loads. According to the model of elastic-plastic deformation, applied for the description of indentation size effect measured for the investigated chalcogenides, the largest value of the elastic recovery was observed for the sample Bi₇(As₂S₃)₉₃. The calculated values of the elasticity modulus show that the glass with x= 5 at.% Bi is characterized with the highest atomic packing density.

Opis:
The mechanical properties of Al-Li solid solution were studied in tensile deformation tests at extremely low temperature of 0.5 K. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flow stress and work hardening rate as well as the development of serrated (jump-like) deformation for the polycrystalline samples with different microstructure. The samples obtained by severe plastic deformation via hydroextrusion were initially tensed up to a given intermediate deformation, then unloaded, annealed to modify their microstructure, and once again deformed to fracture. The increase of the grain size and decrease of average dislocation density due to annealing were found responsible for the work hardening rate increases and the flow stress decrease in accordance with the superposition of the Hall-Petch and Taylor contributions. As opposed to the flow stress, the high ductility of the samples remains rather insensitive to the microstructure properties, apparently due to suppressed recovery processes as well as the unstable deformation mode at extremely low temperature. The high ductility makes it possible to compare the work hardening rate and the scale of jump-like plastic deformation along the stress-strain curves for samples with different microstructures. In all cases, the average amplitude of the stress jumps was observed to increase whereas the average work hardening rate decreases with deformation. The observed correlation indicates that the nature of both phenomenons follows from the dislocation density evolution processes.

The alumina-zirconia composites are one of the relatively good and promising candidates for biomaterials application, due to biocompatibility and their mechanical properties that combines high flexural strength with a high toughness. The aim of the present work is to analyze the mechanical properties of these composites, where zirconia content was varied from 5 to 50 wt%. The citrate gel method, similar to the polymerized complex method, was used to synthesize these ceramics. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and microhardness tests are used to characterize synthesized materials. The examined material exhibits the behaviour of indentation size effect. Modified proportional resistance model are used to analyze the load dependence of the microhardness. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to calculation of the grain size and dislocation density. It is found that hardness is decreased when the zirconia content increases with enlargement of grain size.

CoCrMo alloys are often used as the material for metal artificial joint because of their high corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. In this study CoCrMo alloys having different palladium amount of produced by investment casting method. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction method and indentation tests were used to examine the mechanical properties of the alloys. Indentation experiments were carried out using Vickers indenter that the loads range from 0.245 to 9.8 N. The alloys exhibit significant load-dependence (i.e., indentation size effect). Meyer's law, proportional specimen resistance model, and Hays-Kendall model were used to analyze the load dependence of the hardness. As a results for load-independent determination of the CoCrMo alloys, the Hays-Kendall model is found to be more effective than the proportional specimen resistance model and microhardness values decreases with increase of the Pd content.

In this work, we have intended to synthesize ZE41 Magnesium alloys having varying content of Ce of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 wt.% and to investigate mechanical properties of these alloys. Alloys were produced by mechanical alloying under argon atmosphere. Structural, and mechanical properties of these alloys were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and nanoindenter analysis. From the XRD data it is found that as the Ce content increases, the crystallite size also increases. On the other hand, the hardness of the alloys decreases with the increasing Ce content. Indentation results show that the measured hardness displays a peak load dependence. Load-independent hardness was calculated by Hays-Kendall approach. As a results, it was found that Ce-doping modifies the microstructure and hardness of the alloy.

CoCrMo alloys are one of the most commonly used materials for hip arthroplasty, knee and dental because of its mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and biocompatibility. The microstructures and mechanical properties of CoCrMo alloy were studied using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Knoop indentation hardness tests, focusing on the influences on the different palladium additives. The measured microhardness values of CoCrMo alloys having different palladium ratio are seen to be load-dependent. The citrate gel method, similar to the polymerized complex method, was used to synthesize homogeneous tetragonal zirconia at 1000°C. Nanocrystalline tetragonal phase has been fully stabilized at wide temperature range with 10 mol.% CaO, MgO, and $Y_2O_3$ addition. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and microhardness tests are used to characterize synthesized materials. Results revealed that the Vickers and Knoop microhardness are dependent on indentation test load. Geometrically necessary dislocation model and modified proportional resistance model are used to analyze the load dependence of the microhardness. The highest hardness values were obtained for the samples with CaO addition; however the lowest values were acquired for sample stabilized with $Y_2O_3$ by using both Knoop and Vickers techniques. This situation might be explained using the Hall-Petch relation.

Both pressureless-sintered and dense, fine-grained silicon nitride ceramics were produced from mechanochemically activated nitride-based precursors. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmition Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and an ultra-low load microhardness tester were used to characterize these ceramics. Depth-sensing indentation (DSI) tests in the range of 200-1800 mN were performed on the silicon nitride ceramic to determine dynamic hardness (H_d) and reduced elastic modulus (E_r) values. These values were deduced by analyzing the unloading segments of the DSI curves. It was found that both H_d and E_r exhibits a significant indentation load dependence. Nix-Gao (NG) model was used to analyze the dynamic hardness data in the calculation of the load independent hardness value.
