Opis:
Although he was only recognized as the patron saint of Poland by the Vatican in 2002, St. Andrzej Bobola was accorded a cult follow- ing much earlier than this, and venerated as the saint protector of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was seen as a special defender against the threat from first Tsarist Russia, then Orthodox Russia, then the Soviet Union – the Blessed’s intercession was associated with the victory of the Battle of Warsaw in 1920. For this reason, his beatification and canonization were part of political discourse. Andrzej Bobola’s relics were originally stored in the Jesuit church in Pińsk, moved to Połock after its closure, and were taken to the Hygienic Exhibition in Moscow in 1922. Recovered thanks to the Pope’s intervention in 1924, they were taken to the Il Gesù Church in Rome. By the 1920s, Polish church authorities were already making efforts to canonize Andrzej Bobola and return his relics to Poland. Several Polish cities tried to obtain the saint’s remains, including Vilnius, Warsaw, Pińsk and even Janów Poleski. The canonization, which took place on 17 April 1938, in particular the ceremonial return of the relics of St. Andrzej Bobola to Warsaw in June 1938, took the form of a great religious and patriotic demonstration. It was accompanied by numerous ceremonies in which the highest church and state authorities participated, with extensive paratheatrical scripts, as well as specially designed decorations and music composed for the occasion. The press reported these in great detail, constituting a fascinating case of an event of both great religious significance and broad political context.

Opis:
The year 1933, which marked the 15th anniversary of Polish independence, also saw the celebrations of the 400th birthday of Stefan Batory and the 250th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna led by King Jan III Sobieski. Both events allowed for a wide campaign of pro- paganda for the Sanation movement’s updated political programme, clad in historical analogies, especially in the context of Eastern policy. For this reason, the ceremonies organized in the Borderlands, a particular lieux de mémoire associated with great kings, who were seen in official historical politics as natural harbingers of Józef Piłsudski, took on a special character. This provided an excellent opportunity for the propaganda of the Polish civilizing mission in the East and the promotion of the idea of Poland as a superpower. The main ceremonies com- memorating Stefan Batory were organized in Grodno, where the monarch died in the historic castle in 1586. These celebrations, broadcast by radio and widely reported by the press, were attended by President Ignacy Mościcki and many national and local dignitaries, ministers, senators, deputies, voivodes, bishops, generals etc. Lavish occasional decorations, saturated with specific symbolism, were set up as modern- ized late 16th-century architectural stylizations. The activities of the Grodno Castle reconstruction committee were officially inaugurated on the 350th anniversary of Batory’s death. Even more magnificent were the two-day festivities commemorating the Victory at Vienna organized in Olesko, which overshadowed the central celebrations in Kraków. The programme of the ceremony proclaimed that “a deed of European importance – by King Jan III and the then-superpower Poland – must be reflected by a programme of celebrations of its 250-year anniver- sary on a superpower scale”. An extensive open-air spectacle was organized with the participation of thousands of extras, including soldiers in historical costumes, several hundred fire brigades, scouts and aviation squadrons. Particularly spectacular was the especially arranged musical performance combined with night illuminations. These celebrations were enhanced by other accompanying events such as the Star Automobile and Motorcycle Rally and the sightseeing rally On the Trail of Sobieski. In other Borderland towns such as Tarnopol the jubilee was celebrated on a smaller scale, where a number of outdoor events were organized under the umbrella name Harvest Festival of King Jan III and the Arrival of the Austrian Emperor’s Legation with a Request for the Relief of Vienna.

Vukovar is the city in the East Croatia on the border with the Republic of Serbia. In the paper I attempt to show the development of the city, the composition of its population and the relationships between ethnic groups from establishing of Vukovar until the beginning of the Homeland war in 1991. The paper presents the history of the Croat majority and the minorities which were, and which are, present in the city: the Germans, Hungarians, Serbs, Rusyns, Ukrainians, Yews and the Slovaks. From the beginning Vukovar was a multicultural, multiethnic and multiconfessional city thanks to migrations which were present since its establishing, in which the Croats were the majority. After the WWI a large number of Serbs immigrated into this area. The political situation gave them benefits which earlier belonged to Germans and Hungarians. They gained power to rule the city. It became the source of constant tensions between the Serbian and Croatian population in the period of Yugoslavia (1918-1941) and during the WWII (1941-1944). Although the communist Yugoslav authorities were trying to pacify interethnic differences, the escalation of nationalisms brought about the siege and the capture of Vukovar in 1991 by the Serbian troops.

Many of the operational reports concerning so-called „enemy written propaganda” are still in the archives of the Cracow security forces. The most of such cases come from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The preserved materials are a testimony of the growth of the anticommunist opposition for bold actions in 1976 and later. Leaflets distribution, writing on the walls, sending anonymous letters were those spaces of freedom that were willingly cultivated by the defiant. The inscriptions were written on the walls, trains and trams, the leaflets were scattered in the streets, in the parks, dormitories, cafés, the anonymous letters were sent. The collected testimonies of the anonymous street slogans against communist government show how grand organisational problem they were for the officers of Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Rising social opposition soon resulted in strikes and riots in Radom and establishment of the first legal opposition

Opis:
The article discusses the artistic setting of the largest religious ceremony of the beginning of the 20th century, the coronation of the icon of Our Lady of Consolation in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Lviv. The painting itself was considered to be one of the palladiums of the city, as in 1656, during the Swedish Deluge, the papal nuncio Vidoni first uttered the call to the “Queen of the Polish Crown” in front of this Marian image, in the presence of King Jan Kazimierz and the court. In 1904, on the occasion of the jubilee of the announcement of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mar- ian Congress took place in Lviv, and in that same year the decision was made to create new crowns for the painting of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus. A committee, composed of representatives from the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of the city, was set up to raise the appropriate funds, and the then Archbishop of Lviv, Józef Bilczewski, was asked to perform the solemn coronation. An artistic and technical committee was also established, which included the architect Teodor Talowski (chairman), Antoni Popiel, Andrzej Romaszkan, Tadeusz Czapelski and Karol Richtmann, who made the decision to transform the altar where the painting was placed and to convert the area of the church bay into a distinct chapel. The works were led by Karol Richtmann, the altar was renovated by the painter Karol Domański, and the new bronze antependium was designed by Antoni Popiel. The bolt with the depiction of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was made by the sculptor Piotr Wójtowicz. The icon of the Virgin Mary itself was restored by Henryk Kühn. The chapel vault was decorated with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, and its space was separated from the rest of the church by a grid made according to a project by Alfred Zachariewicz. Antoni Popiel designed golden crowns and a new dress for the figures of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus, made by the goldsmith and jeweller Jan Wojtych. The Committee also commissioned new stained glass windows for the chapel from the Kraków workshop of Stanisław Ekielski and Antoni Tuch. The main work was completed in July 1905. On 12 February 1905, a coronation decree was issued in Rome, and Archbishop Bilczewski was appointed to perform the coronation act. On 28 April 1905, another decree was issued recognizing the antiquity and miraculousness of the painting, and the ceremony was sched- uled for 28th May. The church façade, side elevation and interior were decorated extensively, while the focal point was prepared for receiving the painting – “The Gothic golden throne with motifs from the tomb of Kazimierz the Great”. The decorations were designed by Stanisław Jasieński, a re- nowned painter and theatre decorator of the time. The streets and squares which the coronation procession went through were also adorned. The ceremony was very carefully planned and directed; it was attended by the clergy of the three Christian rites, local authorities and representatives of all social strata. When analyzing the coronation ceremonies, it is important to underline their considerable reliance on the schemes of corona- tions of Marian images which took place on Polish territory in the 18th century. The tradition of the last Marian coronation, of a painting from the Dominican Church in Lviv in 1751, was strongly referred to and accentuated in occasional prints that accompanied this solemn act. The reference to old Polish coronations can be seen in numerous occasional prints, in reporting on the course of the ceremony, as well as in the extensive de- scriptions and texts of sermons published. This ceremony had an exceptional social and national dimension, as it was the first such coronation in the former Polish lands since the loss of independence, and the most important ceremony before the outbreak of the First World War. Not without significance in this context was the underlined similarity of forms between the coronation throne and the canopy over the tombstone of Kazimierz the Great in the Kraków Cathedral, or the calling of one crown as Kazimierzowska and the other Jagiellońska. The new artistic remodeling of the Chapel of Our Lady in the Jesuit Church was a prelude to the renovation of the remaining altars in the church. The coronation ceremony and the restoration of the chapel gathered together the most important artists of the early 19th century working for the Church patronage in the capital of Galicia. The chapel designed by Teodor Talowski successfully combines an 18th -century retabulum with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, being probably the last example of a true Baroque bel composto.

This article presents the genesis and the organizational structure of the Jewish public libraries (also referred to as secular or modern in the literature) in interwar Poland (1918-1939). The origins of these institutions date back to the 19th century and are associated with the Haskalah movement. Due to the strong opposition of the Orthodox Jews and local authorities, the majority of the first libraries were established secretly and run illegally on private premises. Against what were then the odds, progress prevailed and the libraries flourished in the interwar period. In 1937 it was estimated that there were approximately 1,000 Jewish public libraries in Poland.

Patronage played a tremendous role in publishing subject bibliographies after the partitions of Poland. Patronage in publishing referred mainly to financial support granted to compile or print a bibliography. The issuance was undertaken by printers, booksellers, renowned Polish patrons and authors of the bibliographies themselves. In the mid-nineteenth century individual patronage started to wane and was gradually replaced by more anonymous and collective market forces. Established in 1872, Akademia Umiejętności was ranked high among the most active institutional patrons, promoting such masterpieces as Bibliografia historii polskiej by Ludwik Finkel (Parts 1–3, 1891– 1914), Bibliografia ludoznawstwa polskiego by Franciszek Gawełek (1914) and Bibliografia słowianoznawstwa polskiego by Edmund Kołodziejczyk (1911).

The paper signals some of the appearing motifs and problems in the letters, making an initial attempt to interpret them in the context of both authors’ biographies, as well as historical events (especially the experience of emigration). Moreover, it contains seventeen short poetic pieces written by both poets (poems, epigrams and trifles) which may be found on the pages of those letters. The authoress analyses the notion of homoeroticism, as one of the themes found in the prose work of 20th century Polish authors: Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Jerzy Andrzejewski, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and Marek Hłasko. The article is an attempt to describe the relations that the characters in selected works enter into, shifting the former meaning of the notion of homoeroticism from the sphere of purely sexual fascination towards the psychological need of bond building between incisive male characters. Literature on the subject makes it evident that the homoerotic interests of the discussed authors were not limited to the world of fiction they created, but were clearly present in their biographies, which allows one to find a key to the analysis of their works as well.

Igor Stravinsky’s Sonata for Piano is an often overlooked yet important artifact of the composer’s neoclassicism. his treatment of tonality in the second movement is both literally and aurally more conventional than one might first guess. Stravinsky’s reliance on convention points to an ideology of continuity, one that honors the legacy of beethoven and other heroes. In doing so, Stravinsky’s Sonata brings forward old ideas wrought in new ways for a modern era. This essay examines ways of thinking about Stravinsky’s neoclassic style through analysis of the second movement of the Sonata focusing on the use of post-tonal techniques to create surprisingly tonal music.

Opis:
The present paper concentrates on the descriptions of Tunisia in the diary by Aline Réveillaud de Lens (1881–1925), a French painter and writer who in 1911, shortly after her marriage, came to live in Tunis. Reluctant to French norms and conventions, de Lens sees Tunisia as an ideal, fascinating land where she may finally be happy. This fascination is reflected in her descriptions of spaces which are to be analysed through the prism of geocriticism in three movements: Tunisia as a land of light and colours, Tunisian symbolic spaces – desert and oasis, and stereotypical Oriental spaces – palace, harem and hammam.

Opis:
The paper is about the main problems of the policy of Bulgaria toward the Muslim minority since the beginning of 20th century till the present days. First of all, there is the analysis of the biggest assimilation action of the Muslims: in 1912, in 1942 and in the 1980s, during which Bulgaria tried to reduce the number of Muslims in the state (or even cleared out) by changing names from Arabic and Turkish to Bulgarian, forced Christianization and displacement. However they were not the only activities against that minority, which was discriminated since the creation of Bulgarian state in 1878. The roots of that policy are connected with the image of Islam and the “Turkish yoke” in Bulgarian national consciousness and culture, which defines representatives of the Muslims as “Islamized Bulgarians” and “traitors”. After the fall of communism and the democratic transformation in Bulgaria, the situation of the Muslim minority has significantly changed, which is connected with activity of the party, which represented their interests in the political scene, Movement for Rights and Freedoms and an affiliation of that Balkan state to European Union.

The article is concerned with the history of the public libraries of Lower Silesia in the postwar period. The upper time limit for the presented analysis and reports is the year 1975, when the administrative reform changed the territorial structure of the voivodeship libraries. Within the 30 years after the war, the libraries of Lower Silesia gathered a wide collection of both fiction and non-fiction books, as well as the documents of social life. The structure of the libraries collections was adjusted to the needs of the readers from the different regions of the country. Thanks to those virtues, public libraries had a chance to become an important element of their towns’ cultural system. Accommodation facilities allowed for active participation in education processes and served the development of the social life.

Opis:
The article presents the problem of the practical application of legal regulations related to the preservation and protection of written cultural heritage in Poland after World War II, within the borders of 1945. The first legislative initiatives were undertaken in 1944. The introduction of normative provisions was initiated on a patch of Polish territory free from the German occupant. The war events, changes in the shape of the country's borders and the political system made it necessary to develop national documents in order to protect library collections, regardless of their origin. It was not an easy task to implement due to numerous difficulties and a complicated post-war reality. Based on few legislative provisions, over ten million volumes, mostly of post-German provenance, were saved until 1949. Valuable written materials were used to partially compensate for the World War II losses, rebuild libraries and Polish librarianship.

In 1959, a visionary architect, painter, sculptor and professor of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Oskar Hansen, formulated the Open Form theory. The piece of work in its convention was an integral part of the accompanying events and contexts. He, thus, opposed the art of the dominant object in space. During his didactic work at the Sculpture Department, Hansen shared his theory with many generations of students, encouraging them to artistic practice going beyond traditional disciplines, to use context as an integral part of the piece of work, to establish new, non-artistic relations and get rid of the fear of undefinition of the work. In the text, I will look at the idea of Open Form and its evolution based on the example of artistic creativity and attitude of the artists where the echoes of Oskar Hansen’s ideas are clearly seen: Grzegorz Kowalski, Paweł Althamer, Artur Żmijewski, Łukasz Surowiec and Krzysztof M. Bednarski.

Charity Care of Children, Poland, 20th Century
Opis:
Since the baptism of Poland up to 1918, the social care of orphans was diversified. Until the annexations, the care of parentless children in the Polish territories had been environmental and stemmed from voluntary and charitable actions taken up mostly by the Church. The creation of children wards in hospitals and shelters, and the establishment of children’s households in Warsaw as a result of father G. Baudounin’s initiative, might be considered as prototype actions in the complete institutional care of orphaned children. However, during the time of annexations, the situation of orphans became significantly diversified because it depended on the invaders’ policy and the citizens’ activity. Thus, on the one hand, it was created by the occupying country, on the other, it was shaped by tradition. In the territories of each of the conquerors there were periods of liberalization of law, which rendered it possible, at least to some degree, to follow Polish concepts. These were mostly based on philanthropy, charity religious groups, associations and individuals. It needs to be stated that at the beginning of the 21st century, in all of the partitioned territories, the orphanages were governed by obsolete regulations although tried out in other countries. In each of the annexed parts of Poland, the educational and caring actions stemmed from the acquired legislative system. Under the Austrian occupation it was the commune that had the duty of taking care of the parentless children as it was stated in the act passed on 3rd December 1863. In the Prussian part of Poland, the commune’s duty of taking care of the orphans was stated in the act passed in July 1870. It is worth mentioning that the legislative in Prussia was very similar to the Austrian one. The only difference between them was their effectiveness – it was far more efficient in the Prussian province. Under the Russian invasion the regulations concerning the orphanages were quite different. Since the resolution from 1817, the public care of orphans relied on the good will of the society. It was not until the ruling from 1870 that the city councils of public philanthropy, supervising such institutions, were brought to life. At the turn of the 19th century in Poland, especially among social and educational activists, the problem of children’s care became more popular. The necessity of providing care through social actions based on the law was discerned. During World War I, the problem of orphanhood achieved a new dimension, the so-called war orphanhood. It was not effectively taken care of until the end of the war.

Simon Askenazy (1865-1935) was one of the most prominent Polish historians of the beginning of the 20th Century. Poland was then divided between Russia, Germany (Prussia) and Austria-Hungary. Askenazy strongly contributed to the popularity of Polish irredenta movement at the outbreak of WW I. His approach toward the Germans should be perceived as an outcome of several factors, namely the changing international situation, the German/Prussian policy towards Polish subjects and the national interest of Poland. Thus the outbreak of the Great War as well as the restoration of Poland as its aftermath proved to have a great impact on Askenazy and his historical writing.

Opis:
The tradition of Jewish studies in Poland has been drastically interrupted by the Second World War and the Holocaust. In the immediate postwar period the process of re-establishing research on Jewish history and heritage was undertaken by the Jewish Historical Commissions and later Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. More examples of the individual and group initiatives can be traced only in the 1970s and 1980s. The real happened in the late 1980s with Kraków as one of the first and main centers of revitalized Jewish studies in Poland. The first postwar academic institution in Krakow specializing in Jewish studies – Research Center for Jewish History and Culture in Poland – was established already in 1986 in the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. More than a decade later, in 2000, it was transformed into the first Poland’s Department of Jewish Studies (Katedra Judaistyki) – now the Institute of Jewish Studies. Nowadays there are more similar programs and institutions – at the universities in Warsaw, Wrocław and Lublin (UMCS). Also other academic centers tend to have at least individual scholars, programs, classes or projects focusing on widely understood “Jewish topics.” Jewish studies in Poland, along with the revival of Jewish culture, reflect the contemporary Polish attitude to the Jewish heritage, and their scale and intensity remains unique in the European context. The growing interest in Jewish studies in Poland can be seen as a sign of respect for the role of Jewish Poles in the country’s history, and as an attempt to recreate the missing Jewish part of Poland through research, education and commemoration, accompanied by slow but promising revival of Jewish life in Poland.

The article describes in detail the book by Czesław Kłak, “Pigoń” (the Rzeszów University Publishing House, Rzeszów 2013, 612 pp.). The book is a rarity in the Polish humanities because it presents not only the profile of Stanisław Pigoń (1885-1968), one of the most renowned historians of Polish literature, but also a history of Polish literature studies over the course of about 60 years of the 20th century. The main part of the book is based on the correspondence between Pigoń and other scholars and eminent personages of the time: Roman Pollak, Julian Krzyżanowski, Tadeusz Mikulski, Czesław Zgorzelski, Maria Danilewiczowa as well as Bishops Ignacy Świrski and Czesław Falkowski. The book also contains a discussion of Pigoń’s diaries and memoirs, and the Appendix with two polemic articles in defence of Pigoń against imaginary charges of anti-Semitism.

Antoni Wiwulski (1877-1919) was an artist who in his work combined the passion of an architect and sculptor. He is mainly known for his two monumental works: the Grunwald Monument of Cracow (1910) and Three Crosses of Vilnius (1916). However, his oeuvre is much more extensive and in addition to architectural works includes dozens of smaller sculptural artworks. His creative activity cannot be assessed without a closer look at the artist’s life and convictions. Wiwulski’s art is an expression of a complex personality shaped in the course of the vicissitudes of life, heavily influenced by his mother and the religiosity she instilled in him. His art was subordinated to basic values: religion and national duties, which we find evidence in the rich correspondence he left behind.

Experience of living in borderlands is the most important Upper Silesian experience. Com-plicated geopolitical situation affects on Silesian history, local inhabitants’ identity, specific character of this place (periphery complex, pressure of ideological and cultural centres versus everyday relations with the Other, who often is homely and who is different from stereo-types disseminated by ideological centres are experienced here). Upper Silesia had to – and still has to – struggle with typical borderlands’ problems such as: borders’ inconstancy, feel-ing of homeliness, everyday relations with the Others, extreme ideologization, danger, fear, multiculturalism, other culture’s remains even after a resettlements and emigrations. All these problems are a great theme in literature about Upper Silesia, which is trying to describe and understand inconstancy and tragedy of the borderland.

Opis:
Jerzy Grotowski (1933–1999), considered to be one of the greatest theatre artists of the 20th century, frequently expressed his ambivalent relation to words, repeating that any true knowledge has to be obtained by practice. However, all his life he had been creating and publishing text. The volume collecting them all in print has 1131 pages. Researchers interpreting his art (e.g. Krzysztof Rutkowski, Zbigniew Osiński) and his close collaborators like Ludwik Flaszen many times underlined the importance of Grotowski’s writings, stressing a special function the literature played in the artist’s research. Following their recognitions, partly polemizing with them, one can formulate some basic assumptions concerning the character and functions of Grotowski’s writing and its relation to the main aspects of contemporary literature. This was the man of theatre appears to be also an aware creator of a literature paradoxically close related and working for a mystery beyond the words.

Opis:
XX w. to stulecie, w którym budziły się skrajne wersje nacjonalizmów, rozwijały i upadały totalitarne systemy polityczne, stulecie związanego z nimi zjawiska nazwanego w połowie XX w. mianem ludobójstwa – metodycznej zagłady całych ludzkich społeczności realizowanej z różnych urojonych powodów.
The twentieth century was the century in which the extreme versions of nationalisms were awakened, the totalitarian political systems developed, and the century of their associated phenomenon in the mid-twentieth century was called genocide – the methodological destruction of entire human communities for various imaginary reasons. One after the other successive communities, on different continents, fell victim to their extermination attempts: Herero and Nama, Armenians, different nationalities of the USSR before 1956, Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Chinese and Cambodians, Tutsi and Bosnian Muslims. Propaganda was always accompanied by genocide, as a rule it was ahead of genocidal orders, it was a tool that created the ground for the slaughter, showing a distorted picture of future victims, reinforcing the criminal motivations of the perpetrators, indifferent attitudes of witnesses to the massacres. She later allowed her to "blur" the responsibility for crimes. Propaganda constantly improved its methods as the media was developed. It is worth describing its role in a few examples, in each of the reported cases of genocide, initiators, perpetrators, witnesses, were earlier or in the process, through propaganda, "hate speech", ideological utopia, properly formed in their views, the need to eliminate another human being. Victims were deprived of human characteristics, creating an image of the absolute enemy, who was to be annihilated unscrupulously. Despite the historical context of the article, it is still a valid warning for contemporaries.

Opis:
This article aims to various interpretations of The Apocalypse of St. John in 20th century music. Because of its comprehensive use of symbols and mystery, The Apocalypse was often an inspiration for painters, poets, and composers. Particularly, worth analysing are symbols and visions used in selected compositions, such as The Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen, Black Angels by George Crumb, Apokalipsis and Septem Tubae by Bernadetta Matuszczak, Symphony ‘1999’ by Aleksander Lasoń. Seven trumpets, seven horns, God’s anger, angels, destruction, God’s omnipotence, the victory of good over evil, and hope—those are the most common symbols used in these compositions. Transcendental and mysterious meaning is reflected by composers in various ways (from timbre and instrumentation, rhythmic diminution and tempo that shows eternity, to quotations and characters from The Apocalypse). Music written by different authors gives us a broad perspective on how the topic of Apocalypse was adapted in music.

The historical research community in Zielona Góra was took shape aft er 1945. In the town newly incorporated into Poland, historians were the fi rst scholars to undertake research activities. It was in 1971 that an academic institution, able to educate historians, was established. The early studies on the history of historiography in Zielona Góra are associated with Kazimierz Bartkiewicz (1930–2002), who since the 1980s had been working on the Polish historiography of the Enlightenment and the problems of the Oder region in Polish historiography. He was succeeded in this field by Dariusz Dolański, who studied the image of the West and the East in the Polish historiography of the 18th century. The most important works of both scholars were inspired by the historical research community of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, especially by Prof. Jerzy Topolski. A milestone in the development of historiographic studies at the University of Zielona Góra was the establishment of the Department of History of Science and Culture in 2007. Th e research projects in the Department have produced so far a number of MA theses devoted to the history of historiography and historical memory, as well as Anna Janczys’ PhD dissertation devoted to Joachim Lelewel. Moreover, as a part of the research carried out in the Department, Andrzej Gillmeister published a monograph on Tadeusz Zieliński. Gillmeister’s main research interests are ancient history and the 20th century historiography of the former.

Latin was probably chosen as the language of the inscription because it seemed acceptable for both Polish and German members of the congregation.

The following paper is based on the concept of literature and mediality of memory (Astrid Erll) which deals with the function of literary texts in creating and maintaining collective memory. Using these methodological incentives, it focuses on the determination and characterization of ways in which Czech literary works co-create and preserve the memory of the 20th century Hlučín Region, as well as, vice versa, the ways involved in suppressing some layers of memory and oblivion. The area described is selected, inter alia, because of its discontinuous and multi-layered memory influenced by geopolitical changes in Central Europe. The study thus provides a more detailed view of how artistic literature, as a medium of collective memory, can function within the phenomena of the so-called abused memory and memory work (Paul Ricoeur).

The article discusses the image of the city presented in the novel Smutna Wenecja by Wacław Kubacki, an outstanding literary historian, and how the writer’s interests and experiences influenced the topic and the character of the work (he utilised his journals). The city depicted by Kubacki seems to possess a dichotomous nature. The Venetian garden of the arts and the mecca of academics was contrasted with the Venice of poor and foul recesses. The author contrasted the Venice of tourists’ “unbridled excess” with the reality of the life of Venice’s proletariat. The article indicates the linguistic and compositional means which the writer used to reflect that duality, beauty, and ugliness. The article also indicates the dominant features of the novel, i.e. intellectualism and sensoriness.

In the middle of the 20th century The Tobacco Industry and the Tobacco Growers’ Association supplied plan protection equipment for tobacco growers. Different designs of spraying equipment have been developed for different types of applications and field and crop conditions. In the Polish tobacco industry one of the most popular was the high volume sprayer OP-20. In the first half of the 60s the percentage of sprayer OP-20 was a more than 50% of all sprayers. Gradually, in place of sprayer OP-20 were introduced sprayers type “Puzon” and “Działkowiec”. Very popular and effective were hand compression sprayers – “Sad” and “Rex”, which were placed in a wheelbarrow. In the middle of the 60s tractor mounted sprayer have been used, especially by plant protection stations.

Opis:
Music dedication is an additional source not only of biographical curiosities or testimonies of friendship ties but also of real knowledge of composers. The French composers of the last centu-ry who were placing dedications in their organ works were guided by various reasons. The dedica-tions create a peculiar kind of map of the music in the 20th-century France. The author is analyzing the pieces in which either the concrete person is being called in the title e.g. Suite pour…, Hom-mage à…, à la memoire de…, or their names are placed in the subtitle. The aim of this paper is not a detective research of the relations that connect the composer with the addressee of dedication, though sometimes by tracking the mentioned persons one may complete or explain many biograph-ical details (just like in the organ series of e.g. Joseph Bonnet, Gaston Litaize, or Louis Vierne). Because of the great number of dedications (presented in the table provided), the author has tried to divide them into some groups and to make a classification: (1) dedications referring to the past that are the expression of the homage paid to the composers especially important for the French religious or organ music (e.g. Jean Titelouze, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Jean-Phillippe Rameau, César Franck, or Gabriel Fauré); (2) works addressed by the grateful disciples to their master, not only to the teachers of playing the organ — owing to them we can find out about the educational experience of the organists, who at that time were very often composers, too; (3) dedications reflecting the disciple-master relation, but also the one of predecessor-successor in case of the titular organists in Paris churches — it turns out to be the confirmation of the “organist to organist” relation and the relation of friendship, as well; (4) wish to commemorate the organist having died prematurely (e.g. Jehan Alain or Jean-Claude Touche); (5) works offered as a gift to the personages from the circle of the art and culture creators (organ masters, music critics, poets), as well as to the very closest persons among the friends and family.

The article presents the problem related to the protection of written sources in Poland after World War II. The first attempt to draw up a legal document was made in 1944. From 1945, activities, based on legal provisions, were carried on a national scale by the Ministry of Education in a planned and organized manner. The most important actions were taken in the first period of the post-war protection of library collections, i.e. until 1946. The results of the conducted research made it possible to put forward the thesis that several million books were saved during that time. Józef Grycz made a great contribution in saving valuable written heritage. The activities, conducted in extremely difficult conditions, contributed to the reconstruction of libraries, librarianship, and Polish science.

Population censuses have been organised sporadically since antiquity, but in the 19th century they acquired a universal character. These censuses are a good source of information on the rural population, but it was not until the introduction of systematic national agricultural censuses that a broader picture of the countryside and agriculture was obtained. In the censuses conducted after 1918 in Poland, there was a fixed catalogue of questions on the characteristics of farms, but each time new questions were also introduced to reflect the specificity of agriculture in a given historical period. The censuses were conducted on a fairly regular basis and, therefore, they provide valuable information for comparative analyses. Due to their universality and thematic scope, they also collect data on demography and socio-professional and economic relations that are not available in other sources.

The textbook myth: Slovene peasants as heroes of the glorious pastThe present article describes how 16th century peasant uprisings became an essential part of the Slovene history curricula and analyzes their role in the present-day official understanding of Slovene national history. It argues that the established textbook narrations on peasant uprisings greatly contribute to the hegemonic representation of affirmative, unilinear and teleological historical development of the Slovene nation, which ultimately implies an “unavoidable” establishment of Slovenia as a nation state in 1991. 19th century
20th century
Opis:
Wałbrzych, which was founded as a village, expanded to a small mining town. The rising of the coal mining industry has led to the origin of the regional mining basin. At the same time industrial region was developed. Former small town became the heart of the district. Local authorities set up efforts to increase representativeness of the city as the seat of the County. In the old town and its vicinity were located the administrative authorities buildings, banks, shops and services of the higher usability. At the same time, former villages were changed, taking the forms of workers’ settlements – suburbs of Wałbrzych. Transformation of the landscape was changing the town. Could that process, however, lead to create the metropolitan nature of the city and to maintain it? Some preserved settings and tradition decided that the success of that process was only partial.
Wałbrzych założony jako wieś, został rozbudowany jako miasteczko górnicze. Wzrost wydobycia węgla doprowadził do powstania zagłębia górniczego.

Opis:
In Germany, the recording of the causes of death has had a long tradition and goes back a long time in history, but remained unsystematic and nonuniform as it was an autonomous matter of the different German states. This article pursues the question of how the cause-of-death statistics developed in Prussia, the largest territorial state of the later German Reich. It is asked how these statistics, organized by the Prussian Statistical Bureau, have been related to the nationwide health policy since the 1870s. The historical development of official statistics in Prussia reveals that it is neither self-evident which information was collected, nor the criteria according to which this was done. Rather, the data actually recorded are the result of complicated negotiation processes between different actors, not only within the statistical offices, but also between the most diverse interest groups from science, politics and the state.

Opis:
The political breakthrough in Polish–German relations in 1989/1990 resulted in sparking discussion on important issues concerning forced migrations in Europe in the 20th century – namely, displacement of Germans from the lands incorporated into Poland in 1945. Research on this problem in Poland and divided Germany, limited by political factors in the first 40 postwar years, could be undertaken in full extent and in collaboration only after the fall of communism. The efforts of historians and scholars from other fields of humanities were accompanied by a vivid debate among the general public, for which in the 1990s the press was an active forum. Till the beginning of the 21st century, several scholarly analyses and source collections have been published, which form the foundation of this part of Polish historiography until the present day. However, the assessment of the social resonance of these efforts is not unambiguous. Indeed, the taboo which this topic had been in Poland has been broken, but the researchers achieved only limited success in disseminating their findings among the general public.

The text is a book review of an Wiersze polskiej „odwilży” (1953-1957)  (Kielce 2010). This is the first monograph of this subject, and it has a great documentary value. The author based his well-researched study on detailed archival queries in contemporary press, magazines, and leaflets. The author compared the found texts with their authors’ published poetry books, traced the relations between content, censorship interventions in reprints, and subsequent authorial modifications, which were often aimed at universalization of a poem initially written as an urgent public statement. The author meticulously reconstructed the communicational problems of thaw poems and collections.

My aim is to contextualise and reflect on the ambivalences of Gombrowicz’s view of the interwar Polish Jews both in his satirical short story The Brief Memoir of Jakób Czarniecki (1933), focused on the mechanisms of the exclusion of Jews from the Polish society, as well in his later controversial declarations in The Diary and in Polish Memories. During the interwar period, assimilated Jews represented a significant part of Polish cultural life: Gombrowicz’s colleagues, reviewers, readers, friends, and his publisher were Jews. The Polish writer was linked with the assimilated creative intelligentsia by a dynamic of enchantment and disenchantment: on the one hand, he observed its typical neurosis of mimicking the Gentiles; on the other hand, he esteemed Jews’ open-mindedness and creativity, considering them as potential allies in this fight against the Polish Form. My hypothesis is that deep penetration of Jewishness into 20th-century Polish culture and society offered Gombrowicz some living models not only for Czarniecki’s story but also for his philosophy of Form.

The article addresses the issue of protecting architectural objects and urban layouts realised in Poland in the seconf half of the 20th century. The fundamental principle for selecting objects or urban complexes which might be entered into the list of protected objects as contemporary culture heritage is establishing criteria that selected objects should meet. Such activities were undertaken several years ago in the majority of regional units of SARP, particularly in Warsaw and other large cities in our country, but there is no overall image of the principles for establishing the criteria or a complete list of the objects. With cases of demolition of valuable buildings occurring daily, this matter appears extremely important and urgent.

Based on static data, changes in the diocese of the Masurian Evangelical-Augsburg Church were caused by the mass movement of Lutheran people to both German states. The number of faithful in the diocese decreased by 41.8% (from 39,811 to around 23,200), the parish council disintegrated, and the diocese’s income fell drastically (although the percentage of Church contributions paid by the faithful remained at the previous level). Along with the faithful, seven priests went to Germany; two state authorities were removed from the Masurian territories because of their pro-German views. 1959 is also a time of intensified efforts by the state authorities to procure the rectory and other non-religious buildings from the Church, which greatly undermined the Church’s pastoral and social work, and undermined the material basis of its existence.

It is – as it was hundred years later – a time of economic prosperity and of impending crisis. For comparison, examples from the press of the 20th century (1995–1996) are cited to show similarities and development of the language of economy during this period. Emotions have always accompanied economic processes, its successes and failures, for over 100 years.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis refers to amnesty acts in Poland in the 20th century. A thesis is posed in the paper that in principle they take place at the moments which are politically important for the Republic of Poland, the aim of which is to establish them in the social consciousness. Typically, they are the acts of the parliament. The Polish doctrine of law clearly presents a separate character of amnesty acts in reference to the court verdicts. They are an expression of the will of the parliament, independent of the court’s judgment, according to which amnesty should be carried out.

Opis:
The article examines the relation between Tuwim’s poetry and modern colloquial language. The avant-garde artists for whom in the beginning of the 20th-century art was an elite occupation, treated every-day speech as a mass form of communication. Tuwim’s poetry was frequently criticised for banality. Matywiecki presents the poet as a hero fighting with the demon of commonness. The crucial thesis of the article is that banality which is modified in a creative way says more about the epoch than elitist visions. In his poetry, satire and cabaret work Tuwim transformed triviality into dialog and a common human being into a creative person. Transition of the street talk into original speech is the defence against reducing individual being to cliché which means the fear of 20th-century killing ideologies.

Founded in 1856, the Kalksburg Jesuit Secondary Grammar School quickly became the signature school of the Habsburg Monarchy, as it was particularly popular among the aristocracy and lower nobility. This institution, which obtained its ‘publicity right’ in 1891, placed a great emphasis on physical education, besides education and religious formation. Their huge garden, complete with playgrounds and sports fields, created a suitable opportunity for exercise in any season. Due to its ‘convictus’ (i.e. a boarding school), the secondary school possessed a catchment area of attractions: before 1918, students from all over the Habsburg Empire – and even from beyond it – arrived to Kalksburg. Curiously, dismantling the Monarchy merely brought about a partial reapportionment, obvious in the case of Polish students, whose number dropped considerably. The secondary school remained mindful of cultivating education in the students’ mother tongue, as well, so those who were ready for it could also learn the Polish language.

The article is an attempt to divide Jabłoński’s output into phases according to Mieczysław Tomaszewski’s concept. In line with the assumptions of this concept, in the composer’s biography there are turning points and a return that defi ne his creative path. General characteristics of Jabłoński’s creative path can be divided into three phases. Stylistic caesurae of the phases become essential in pointing out the pivotal moments that defi ne the course of evolution of Jabłoński’s oeuvre. The path leads from the infl uence of neoclassical aesthetics in his early works, through the experience of aleatoric and sonoristic techniques of controlling the musical material, up to simplifi ed textures and stylistic features revolving around the sérénité climate. In the phases of the evolution of Jabłoński’s output presented here, specifi c features of his musical language are pointed out. These are connected with his individualistic approach to the issue of tonality. The composer developed and enriched his musical language, but only with such elements of new techniques that did not disturb the creative path he had taken earlier. His attempts to merge traditional forms with 20th-century compositional techniques only served the purpose of fi nding new timbres and sound qualities. The author of the article emphasises the importance of the melodic element in Jabłoński’s works, where expressivity and emotion are anchored in the expression of the romantic spirit of beauty.

20th century Polish violin sonata
Opis:
Artykuł ukazuje inspiracje folklorystyczne zawarte w polskich sonatach skrzypcowych powsta- łych w XX wieku: Rozważania analityczne dotyczą 8 dzieł z I połowy i 3 z II połowy XX wieku. Większość tych kompozycji należy do nurtu tzw. „zapomnianej muzyki polskiej”. 2. W jaki sposób zostały zastosowane, a więc jakie techniki kompozytorskie wykorzystano w ich opracowaniu? 3. „Wierchowej nuty” w funkcji części wolnej – w 1 utworze.
The article shows folklore inspirations contained in Polish violin sonatas composed throughout the 20th century: analytical considerations apply to 8 works created in the first half and 3 in the second half of the 20th century. Most of these compositions, listed below with dates, belong to the so-called current of ‘Forgotten Polish music’: — Michał Józefowicz, Sonata in D minor for violin and piano op. 12 (1902), — Henryk Melcer, Sonata in G major for violin and piano (1907), — Józef Szulc, Sonata in A minor for violin and piano op. 61 (before 1908), — Franciszek Brzeziński, Sonata in D major for violin and piano op. 6 (1910), — Witold Friemann, Sonata in E minor „Polish” for violin and piano op. 15 (1913), — Stefan Bolesław Poradowski, 3 Sonatinas for two violins op. 11a (1923), — Alfred Gradstein, Sonatina in C major for violin and piano (1937), — Stanisław Wisłocki, Sonata in F major for violin and piano (1942), — Jerzy Kolasiński, Sonatina for violin and piano „alla rustica” (1971), — Jerzy Młodziejowski, Sonata for two violins (1972), — Joanna Bruzdowicz, I Sonata „Il Ritorno” for violin solo (1990). The paper discusses these works in chronological order. The purpose of the analysis is to find answers to the following questions: 1. Which elements of Polish folklore appeared in the 20th century Polish sonata? 2. How were they implemented, and therefore what compositional techniques were used in their creation? 3. What function was ascribed to these works by individual composers? Each of the compositions is analysed with reference to the above mentioned research problems and illustrated by examples of musical notation. Research shows that four elements of Polish folklore occur in this genre and that they are implemented in various ways by different authors. These include: — melo-rhythmic features in mazurka dances (in the theme structure and in the stylization of a movement in sonata – in 6 musical pieces), — „krakowiak” stylization in the finale movement of sonata – in 2 pieces, — a reference to the polonaise style (melo-rhythmic features in the themes of 2 pieces), — Górale songs stylization, the so-called „Wierchowa nuta” (‘Wierchowa genre’ – two-voice or multivocal melodic idea of mountain peak slow-pace songs – consisting of 1 musical phrase with repetition, sung by Polish Górale in Podhale) in the slow movement – in 1 piece.

The article concerns the problem of public school teachers’ daily lives in Masuria. The analysis took into account such components of everyday life as: travel to Warmia and Masuria, reasons for choosing the profession, education, work areas, the conditions and working methods, types of nourishment at school, the financial conditions of schools and some elements of private life. The issue of teachers’ daily lives deserves special attention because of the specific situation of Polish education in Warmia and Masuria in the school years 1944/1945–1945/1946. Teachers were mainly engaged in organizing Polish schools from the start in order to promote the Polish language among youth and children from different nationalities and cultures. Their daily lives were strongly influenced by determining the final borders of the District of Masuria, the action for preserving this land, the constant risk and problems with the staff, rooms and money. The article is not only about daily professional life (part I) but also about teachers’ personal lives (part II). The sphere of private life refers to issues such as food supplies, households, salaries, housing, family matters, forms of spending leisure time. There is certainly a need for broader studies using a variety of source materials. The sources of an autobiographical nature, memories and diaries, have been mainly used to present the issue.

The author of the book interprets individual elegies and Atical sensibility. Simultaneously, the author supports her analysis with the theoretical foundations created by acclaimed and reputed German researchers of Rilke’s literary output such as Käte Hamburger, Beda Allemann, Manfred Engel and Jacob Steiner, among others. In her considerations, the author also refers to Polish translation of the elegies, notably those made by Mieczysław Jastrun and Adam Pomorski, also providing their critical interpretation.

In February 1914, the Agricultural Associations of Housewives, operating in the Eastern provinces of Prussia since the 1890s, were subordinated to organisations responsible for the development of agriculture in Prussia, which were dominated by conservatives and noble landowners. This came about on the initiative of some influential agrarians, who, in this way, wanted to strengthen their influence in rural areas, as well as to include the women’s agrarian movement in combating the outflow of labour from agriculture. The women’s organizations, having been politicized in this way and adopted by agrarian leaders after 1908, were to implement a new strategy for preventing the migration of rural population to cities. This is as a resulted of the partial support for Heinrich Sohnrey’s programme and his concept of improving the quality of life in rural areas. Elisabet Boehm, the founder of the associations, from the very beginning of their existence, sought to cooperate with agricultural organizations. She believed that this would be the only way for members to gain access to the expertise for implementing the main point of the association’s agenda, i.e. the professionalization of women’s work in rural areas. The article focuses on explaining the circumstances that led to the interest of the agrarians in the women’s agrarian movement and its inclusion in the reform programme for rural prosperity launched just before the war and showing that the cooperation was primarily aimed at using the associations to strengthen their influence in rural areas.

The proposed text is an attempt to read the works of the writers of Bu-Ba-Bu in the context of the aesthetics of camp. On the basis of selected literary texts and essays of the Bu-Ba-Bu writers set together with Susan Sontag’s and Roland Barthes’ thoughts, the author argues that campy play in kitsch was for Andrukhovych, Irvanets, and Neborak a fundamental literary and artistic strategy, which vividly demonstrated their understanding of postmodern literature. In this context, the author of the article argues that literature in the concept of Bu-Ba-Bu writers should be a sex-ual and sens-ual creation; writing - a strategy of seduction; and a tissue of the text - the topography of forbidden regions, tempting with their prohibition.

A linchpin of government next to the army and the judiciary, the public (political) administration was of special signifi cance in the multinational Habsburg monarchy throughout the constitutional period. It stimulated changes and paved the way towards progress and modernisation of the Danubian monarchy, and yet since the beginning its activity was severely criticised and accused of numerous fl aws. In order to reform the administration and remedy its shortcomings, a number of projects were conceived by both the authorities and the parliamentary-governmental environment or academia. The administration’s greater involvement in solving problems of social and economic life was called for and the need to remove the conflictsof jurisdiction between its various branches and to sort out the relations between the organs of the state and local self-government was postulated. One of the most interesting projects of the administrative reform was prepared at the beginning of the twentieth century by the government of Ernst Kroeber. It consisted, inter alia, in strengthening the government power in the area. Although the proposed changes were not implemented, the reform of the administration was re-set on the agenda before the outbreak of World War I in 1911 with the establishment of a special Administrative Reform Commission, its work only partially successful. The outbreak of World War I necessitated the suspension of further work on the reform.

Using concrete figures from 19th and 20th century Quebec novels, we will illustrate various types of alterity and the general evolution of Canadian mentality in relation to various minorities.

Opis:
The object of this paper is the extent and dynamics of language changes in the interwar period. The rebirth of Poland in 1918 and the resulting sociopolitical and cultural transformations caused major changes in the use of Polish as compared to the period of the Partitions. The process of language unifi cation, in particular on the phonetic plane, accelerated in the new conditions. The interwar period set the language development directions as regards word formation, namely expansion of acronyms, use of surnames as the derivation basis, and creation of hybrid structures with prefi xes and other elements of foreign provenance. The interwar period’s contribution to the evolution of the Polish language is internationalisation of vocabulary on the one hand and its Polonisation on the other hand. The ground-breaking nature of the period 1918–1939 is evidenced also by the multiplication of the lexical resource of the language. The unappreciated role the interwar period played in the evolution of Polish needs to be verifi ed and exposed in the periodisation of the history of language.

Kafka belongs to the greatest letter writers of the 20th century, but his epistolary prose does not enjoy the popularity it deserves. Kafka’s letters present problems in a different way than his fictional works. They should be read both as a biographical document and a literary text corresponding with the short stories and novels of the author of The Metamorphosis. The article discusses Kafka’s letters to Felice Bauer, a young woman he loved and with whom he was twice engaged. In reality this story ended with a disaster, however its resulted was a remarkable literary text. Elias Canetti called the letters to Felice “the second Trial”; in fact, this epistolary series resembles a novel in letters rather than writing correspondence, such as the one left by Joyce, Mann or Gombrowicz. It offers a fascinating, extraordinary range of emotional experience, style and deep self-analysis. At the same time, it arouses concern due to obsessiveness, repetitions, helplessness of the hero.

One of the threads of the dailies and the correspondence of Maria Dąbrowska and Anna Kowalska published so far in excerpts is the so-called “Miłosz’s case”.The poet became the cause of a conflict between these two writers of a purely personalnature, which also influenced their evaluation of the poet’s work and life decisions. They also referred to Czesław Miłosz’s decision in 1951, when he applied for asylumin France, which was perceived by many in the literary and political circles both inPoland and abroad as an act of treason. The article shows some of the less knowncircumstances of the complicated “Milosz’s life affairs” from those years, seen fromthe perspective of both writers and their immediate environment.

The aim of the article is to show the stages of the development of pre-school education in Poland in the 20th century, which set the directions for further changes in the pre-school area. The article was prepared on the basis of available historical sources in the form of specialist press, guides, and methodological manuals, as well as analysis of the literature on the subject. The work identifies and distinguishes innovative views and methods in the field of former pre-school education, which may constitute a form of contemporary pedagogical inspiration. The aim of this article consciously combines two important aspects, i.e., acquiring historical knowledge and its modern applications. The text discusses the history of pre-school education in Poland in the 20th century and shows its reminiscences in contemporary social and educational space. The text is an attempt to show the importance of pre-school education in the modern system, and drawing the reader’s attention to the achievements of Polish preschool education in the context of changes and needs of society in the area of care for pre-school children. The article is not an exhaustive study, but rather a contribution to considerations in this area.

The theoretical framework of building heritage conservation is not necessarily a predefined set of tenets and axioms with potentially universal significance, but a result of particular challenges and practices bound in time and place. In this article, the guidelines of building heritage conservation in Switzerland in the last century are outlined briefly with reference to the broader European theoretical discourse. Focusing on the contradictions between the theoretical position and practical work of Linus Birchler, it argues for the necessity to re-read and assess our principles of building heritage conservation in relation to the specific built cases they originated from.

This essay discusses the Anti-Sienkiewicz campaign briefly. The affair happened in 1903 in the Warsaw weekly magazine “Głos”, but was written up in many Polish newspapers. Stanisław Brzozowski (1878-1911), the beginning publicist, literary critic and novelist spoke against Sienkiewicz’s famous works. Sienkiewicz’s main novels have been criticised for their conservatism and lack of social progressiveness, although they display great narrative power and contain vivid characterisations in a style full of imagery. The lack of national independence created greater reverence towards national history in 19th century Polish literature. Sienkiewicz felt a close bond with the Polish nobility. Brzozowski tried to put his own philosophy of culture and his concept of the “philosophy of labour” into practice. He spoke as am exponent of Polish modernism and socialism.

This paper emphasises the importance of the periodical Formisci, published in 1919-1921, within the context of the early Polish avant-garde. The journal was the publishing body of a group of Kraków artists who in 1919 declared themselves Formists; its profile was established mainly by its editor, Tytus Czyewski. Over two years, only six issues were published, featuring theoretical statements by group members, Formist and futuristic poetry, and reproductions of Formist works. This is where the future publishers of futuristic fl yers, Czyewski, Bruno Jasienski, Stanisław Młodoeniec, and also the publishers of subsequent avant-garde periodicals Nowa Sztuka and Zwrotnica, Anatol Stern and Tadeusz Peiper, met. Formisci was also one of the fi rst cues for promoting new Polish art abroad and for establishing contacts with other avant-garde circles. Its pages also featured articles on the latest happenings in foreign art and literature, as well as the translations and works of artists belonging to the foreign avant-garde. One of the periodical’s priorities was accessing the international network of progressive ideas represented by European avant-garde magazines. As a result, the Formists were discussed by the Munich magazine Der Ararat, Madrid’s Ultra, and Belgrade’s Misao. Formisci became a platform for the exchange of progressive ideas developed in parallel across Europe, a vehicle facilitating the fl ow of information on the latest developments in the arts on an international scale, arguing the need for a revolution in Polish culture, and adapting it to the chan ges taking place after the First World War.

Opis:
Twórczość wybitnego architekta włoskiego modernizmu Luigi Morettiego (1907-1973) stanowi odbicie jego rozległych zainteresowań. Szczególnie pasjonował go nurt w sztuce nowoczesnej l'art informel - informel - nowy gatunek nazwany tak pod koniec lat czterdziestych przez francuskiego kolekcjonera i krytyka sztuki Michela Tapiè. Art informel - sztuka nieformalna uprawiana przez wielu młodych artystów, m. in.
The work of the eminent Italian modernist architect Luigi Moretti (1907-1973) reflects his wide interests. He was especially interested in the new art form, which was called Informal Art or Art Autre (Other Art), by the French art critic Michel Tapiè at the end of the forties. Informal Art was created by many young artists such as Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, the Jackson Pollock and Georges Mathieu. One of the important issues arround which Moretti's creative interests the history, especially the great works of Michelangelo. The others being his attention to the inner space, resulting in the new way to consider it and to describe its qualities as nobody in Italy had before, and his curiosity for science, which led him to explore its possible connection with architecture and art. Moretti was also interested in the conditions of vision, in how the observer perceives a work of art in its general form and in details; therefore, he looked for the correct angles giving a global and a particular vision of a work of architecture.

This paper analyses the state of contemporary Polish historiography about the history of Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century, a very dramatic period in Polish-Ukrainian relations, with a high emotional charge, influenced by political and ideological elements. Olha Morozova’s book is an important voice in the historiographic Polish-Ukrainian discourse. Th e author indicates different aspects linking the history of both nations, but without passing over the difficult or even dramatic moments of their common history. The book enriches contemporary knowledge about Polish historical thought, prompts Ukrainian and Polish historians to reflect and perhaps reorient their findings and assessments. Olha Morozova takes the position of continuing the calm Polish-Ukrainian dialogue, eliminating the emotional and ideological elements as much as possible.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne 61 (2013), issue 2. The political transformations in Spain that ended with the free parliamentary elections of 15th June 1977 were a powerful catalyst for the activity of the Spanish nation in all walks of life. Between 1975 and 1990 a real revolution took place in the Spanish mass media and in culture. It resulted in the setting up of modern periodicals (among others, El País, El Mundo, Navarra Hoy, Diario la Rioja and many others), over 2,600 radio stations and a network of modern television channels broadcasting programs devoted to the culture and languages of the autonomous communities. The Ministry of Culture established in 1977 supported initiatives promoting the multiculturalism of the Kingdom of Spain, which resulted in the opening of several dozen modern museums, institutes of modern art and the organization of numerous festivals. The decentralization of the country made it possible to emphasize the multiculturalism of the Spanish autonomous communities that today act as a magnet for 70 million tourists from all over the world.

Croatian history of literature – 20th century
Opis:
The Enlightenment in Croatia – the change of paradigm?: From impoverished monomyth to liberated polymyth The paper is an attempt at a synthetic presentation of the discourse that took place in twentieth-century literary studies on the idea of the Enlightenment in Croatia. The author recognizes the model of conservative and Catholic Enlightenment centered on the North of the country, which is constructed in these studies, as a variant that impoverishes the reality of the 18th century, and propounds (referring to the Otto Marquard’s idea about the necessity that all communities are rooted in many histories) to extend the reflection on the Enlightenment in Croatia also to its south Dalmatian and Dubrovnik variant. She proposes to study the Enlightenment in non-Western countries to a lesser extent through the prism of socio-political and economic determinants, and more by tracking mental history and cultural flows. Such a mental path allows redefining the Enlightenment in Croatia focusing on its cosmopolitanism and liberalization.

Opis:
The purpose of the study is to describe relations connecting the Gebethner & Wolff editing bookshop with Łódź at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The company established in 1857 in Warsaw opened in Łódź, in 1890, the warehouse of grand pianos, pianos and harmoniums, as well as a storehouse of notes. In further years, agencies selling periodicals “Kurier Codzienny” (1893) and “Tygodnik Ilustrowany” (1896) published by Gebethner & Wolff also commenced their activities. Both the shop and the agencies played a significant role in the integration of the music and the journalistic environment in Łódź. In 1898 a bookshop was opened; however, it was sold to Rychliński & Wegner company in 1901. The next Gebethner & Wolff bookshop, established in 1912, conducted its activity until the beginning of the World War II. It offered mainly literature from a native publishing house, as well as quality foreignlanguage publications. During World War I, the bookshop organised special exhibits, the purpose of which was to promote Polish educational books. The Gebethner & Wolff company has also undertaken activities that contributed to the popularisation of Łódź. It was the special number of “Tygodnik Ilustrowany” devoted to Łódź (1911 no. 19), as well as the information diary for 1914 called “Rocznik Łódźki Gebethnera & Wolffa” [Łódź Yearbook of the Gebethner & Wolff]. However, it was W. Reymont's “Ziemia Obiecana” [The Promised Land], which had the greatest impact on shaping the image of the city upon the Łódka river. The initiative of appearance and publishing of the book was the effect of activity of Gebethner & Wolff. The achievement of the above-mentioned, as well as other activities, became possible thanks to the participation of numerous persons connected with Łódź. They were, among others, booksellers: Robert Schwartzchultz, Juliusz Goźlinski, Stanislaw Miszewski, journalists: Wladyslaw Rowiński and Zenon Pietkiewicz, as well as the son of the company's co-owner, Gustaw Wojciech Gebethner.

Opis:
The article deals with the former palace of the von Zieten family and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Smolice, both located in southern Greater Poland, which are the most interesting neo-baroque architectural complexes in the early $20^{th}$ century in Poland. Both are the work of Wrocław-based company "Gaze & Böttcher", which has not yet been noticed by researchers. The buildings were founded by Helena von Zietzen née Woller, who financed these using the legacy of her father Samson Woller, a Lower Silesian industrialist. The palace was built in 1908-1911 in two or three phases as an extension of the previously existing small residence of Woller. The palace was built in 1908-1911 in several phases as an extension of the previously existing small Woller residence. At the same time, in the years 1907-1909, a large neo-baroque church with an axial composition on a cross plan was erected. Artists and craftsmen from Wrocław and Berlin took part in the decoration of the temple. The palace in Smolice was mentioned in the publications of such researchers as T.S. Jaroszewski and J. Skuratowicz, however it was mainly considered the work of unrecognized artists. The archival research carried out by the authors made it possible to find the original designs of the palace by renowned architectural firm "Gaze & Böttcher" from Wrocław, which changed this situation. The authors of the article, based on archival and bibliographic research as well as examination of autopsy objects, determined the authorship of the palace and the stages of its expansion, and in the case of the church, the authorship of individual elements of the interior. The architectural forms of the complex in Smolice were analyzed in the context of the achievements of "Gaze & Böttcher" company, which allowed us both to find common style features with other works of the Wrocław architectural office, and the distinctiveness determining the value of the buildings erected in Smolice.

Najważniejsze z nich wskazują na: odniesienia historyczne widoczne w budynkach wznoszonych w latach dwudziestych, dominację stylu modernistycznego w latach trzydziestych, regionalny charakter kowieńskiego modernizmu, specyficzne elementy i detale architektoniczne, jednoklatkowe układy budynków, swobodny sposób kształtowania pierzei.
The purpose of the article was the general characteristics of residential architecture built in the 1920s and 1930s in the centre of Kaunas. It was a period of intense changes and development, which was connected with the new status of the city as “the transitional capital” of Lithuania. The first chapters present the conditions that accompanied these processes and their main directions and scale. The most important aspects of the transformation of the urban structure of Kaunas were discussed in a general way, the most prestigious projects and leading architects were also indicated. Then, the focus was on residential buildings, which in the interwar period constituted the largest group of new facilities. The scope of detailed studies was limited to multi-family buildings constructed on V. Putvinskio street, as a representative example of residential architecture in the city centre. The research method included studies of relevant literature, interviews with local architects and researchers of architecture, inspection of buildings, photographic documentation. During the preliminary studies, five buildings were selected, which were subjected to comparative analyses, including in the field of architectural styles and shaping of architectural forms as well as functional and spatial solutions. The results of the research are presented in the summary in the form of conclusions. The most important of them indicate: historical references visible in buildings constructed in the 1920s, the dominance of the modernist style in the 1930s, the regional character of modernism in Kaunas, specific architectural elements and details, plans of buildings with single-staircase, and a free-style composition of frontages.

The article discusses the poetics and theme of the work of Charis Jakupow titled (The Artist’s Journey around Europe), literary genre, the peculiarities of space-time construction and imaging types. The linguistic layer of the text is also analyzed, with emphasis placed on those passages in which the author’s beliefs and mentality are revealed. Jakupov in the descriptions of European countries sometimes uses the language of Soviet propaganda and imaging characteristic of the official vision of the West in the USSR. In turn, the reception in the narrative of the perspective of the artist-traveler leads to the development of the subject of art history while reducing social and moral issues.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 60, issue 4 (2012). Ludomir Sleńdziński was the main representative of classicism in Polish art in the period between the two World Wars. The article discusses his two trips to Italy in 1922/24 and 1924/25. They have not been yet researched in the context of the origin and character of his work, albeit impulses coming from Italy were thought to have been an important catalyst for the birth of the so-called “return to order.” Sleńdziński was Dmitry Kardovsky’s student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sankt Petersburg, and it was in his class that he acquired a worship of the old masters and a perfect command of his trade, first of all perfect drawing skills. Apart from the Sankt Petersburg school, classicist trends came to Polish art from Paris where they were first noticed in the circles connected with the Museion magazine (1911-1913) and among artists belonging to the Polish colony, such as Henryk Kuna, Edward Wittig and Eugeniusz Żak. In the article, I reconstruct Sleńdziński’s tour of Italy, and I remind about the exhibition of Polish modern art that he staged in 1925 as part of the 3rd Roman Biennale. His personal contact with old and modern Italian art became an important moment in his artistic formation, stimulating his departure from academic towards modern classicism, in which the artist starts playing a game with the present day and with tradition, consciously using stylistic elements that belong to different epochs. In conclusion it must be said that Ludomir’s trips inclined him to introduce many new solutions (sometimes surprisingly close to works by well-known Italian artists of similar outlook) and determined the final shape of his mature work.

XIX and the beginning of the 20th century
Opis:
The present text is the second part of the author’s description of iconographic sources for studying the history of a child and childhood in the second half of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. In the former, the types of sources addressed to children were discussed, in which the researcher will find “pictures from the children’s world”. It showed examples of iconographic materials presenting children in various everyday and festal situations, published in the richly illustrated children’s press, fairy tales, stories, collections of literary pictures, poems, fettered speeches, illustrated primers and visual boards for the science of things. The subject of these findings is the child and childhood shown in iconographic materials in the second half of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. During this period, as a result of the ongoing civilizational, technological and cultural changes, a significant increase in the types and number of publications illustrated with graphics, and later also with photographs can be observed. The press is being developed, including the illustrated, women’s, family, socio-literary, everyday press, both on a general and regional scale. Also, numerous calendars are being published, including their illustrated versions. Daguerreotype is becoming popular while correspondence with the use of postcards is popularized. All these sources will be used as the source basis for the text, for the purpose of characterizing the iconographic materials depicting the children’s world. When analyzing the iconographic material in terms of history and pedagogy, the researcher of the history of childhood can find many interesting aspects. He or she can observe scenes from children’s lives, including family life, education (home and school education), relationships with adults and peers, undertaken pursuits, everyday activities, behaviors, ways of spending time, fun and pastimes. On their basis, the researcher can describe children’s appearance, dress, hairdo, toys, interiors, the surroundings in which they stayed and the equipment they used, which make up the material aspects of the children’s world. The particular types of iconographic sources will be presented below, where the researcher can find the scenes of childhood. In addition to discussing their specificity, the provided examples will illustrate the everyday life present in a given type of iconographic material.

The purport of this paper is to highlight the development tendencies and characteristics of the 20th century, which was decisive in forming the found ations of the present world. The narrative underlines the fact that it was an age of wars, ideological rivalry between democratic capitalism versus fascism and then communism, nationalisms and insurgencies for freedom and social change; time when international domination of the United States consol idated and when enormous social, economic, scientific and technological progress was made. But it was also a century of atrocities, often amounting to genocide — so alien to the twentieth-century image of the allegedly humanistic progress.

Opis:
The article presents politicians’ views – often referring to scientific findings – on the reason of a relatively high infant mortality rate in Germany just before the First World War; it also outlines the remedies for that phenomenon. The analysis has been carried out on the basis of the published stenographic records of the meetings at the Reichstag building. The narrative is based on an objective comparative method, according to which a direct assessment of facts, events and processes is forbidden. The juxtaposed contents highlight a strong polarisation of political views, on the one hand represented by social democrats, and on the other by the rest of the members of Parliament and people connected with the Government, which allows insight into the theoretical and practical premises of the actions undertaken.

Opis:
The article aims to examine the circumstances of Milhaud and Villa-Lobos’s encounter, who are the significant figures of 20th century French and Brazilian avant-garde. The analysis of the principle aspects of youthful inspirations, musical approaches and personalities as per Mieczysław Tomaszewski’s concept of the integral interpretation, presents the impact of cultural milieux on artists’ aesthetics, together with their apparent fascination with Carnival. Additionally, the study highlights a connection between the composers’ natures and the fantasy implied either as a category or a genre fantasia. As a result, various analogies are identified linking the composers’ life and musical language.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present a broad spectrum of relations between Arthur Honegger—a composer, and Jean Cocteau—a poet and playwright. They are often associated with the group under the patronage of Cocteau called Les Six, to which Honegger undoubtedly belonged. The poet gathered young composers around himself and became the initiator of artistic meetings and concerts. Most of tchem took place between 1917 and 1921. Cocteau wanted to show the path French music should follow. In accordance to that, his aesthetic manifesto Le Coq et l’Arlequin was published in 1918. In the first section, Honegger’s and Cocteau’s aesthetic views concerning music, elements of musical work and its expression are presented and confronted. Next, the composer’s as well as poet’s work is presented by the example of their cooperation. The analysis of mutual relations leads to the conclusion that, despite many different views, Honegger and Cocteau respected each other and were very kind. The composer significantly departed from the ideals of Cocteau and developed his own individual style resulting from a wide range of musical inspirations. Les Six was a short-lived group and Cocteau himself was gradually moving away from his controversial and radical views.

Opis:
Birdcages, nestboxes, bushes, or on attitudes to wild birds in the space of Warsaw at the turn of the 20th centuryThe article attempts to present how at the turn of the 20th century the attitude of the inhabitants of Warsaw towards wild birds living in the city was being shaped. The author focuses on objects used to allocate such birds their space within the city, on practices related to birds and discourse concerning this subject. She points to changes that were initiated then, mainly by members of Warsaw Society for the Protection of Animals and journalists publishing in its magazine, „Przyjaciel Zwierząt” (Friend of Animals).
