Opis:
Zinc is a metallic element, of symbol Zn and atomic number 30, that is placed in the group 12 of the periodic table. As an essential trace element, zinc is required to support human biochemical processes. It is found in nearly 200 specific enzymes in the living organisms, and it also serves as structural cofactor for many cellular proteins. [1] Zinc may exert pleiotropic effects in organism; for that, deficits of cellular zinc content can have catastrophic consequences and are linked to major pathophysiology, such as diabetes, stroke and malformations of brain function [2]. The complexity and importance of zinc homeostasis is reflected by the large variety and number of zinc-related proteins found in almost every cell compartment; for example, this biometal is transported through ZnT (Zn2+ transporter) family and ZIP family, proteins that are completely dedicated to zinc transport [2]. It is also noticeable, that between three and ten percent of all protein products of genes in mammalian genomes bind zinc, which is essential for their folding, activity or conformational change [2].

Opis:
The aim of this research was to determine the total content of zinc and its fractions in arable soils of the Province of Podlasie (województwo podlaskie) and to assess the correlation between the zinc content, its fractions and physicochemical properties of soils. The research material consisted of samples taken from arable soils in 81 points of the province, with one point chosen in the majority of the districts. Each point was located on mineral soil used as arable land, without any external source of contamination like roads or industrial plants. Samples were taken after harvest, from the arable layer, determined to lie within the depth of 0-30cm. The samples were submitted to determinations of the basic physicochemical properties of soil. The content of total zinc was determined after mineralization in aqua regia, by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method. The content of zinc fractions was determined by the BCR method. There were four fractions determined: exchangeable, bound with oxides and hydroxides, bound with organic matter and residual zinc. The physicochemical properties of soils were highly differentiated except the grain-size composition. The content of total zinc was typical of arable uncontaminated soils and fluctuated in a wide range. The content and shares of zinc fractions in total zinc were as follows: for very light and light soil: organic>bound with oxides and hydroxides>exchangeable>residual; for medium-heavy soil: organic>exchangeable>bound with oxides and hydroxides>residual. Distribution of zinc in particular fractions was dependent to some degree on pH, content of organic matter and grain-size composition.
Oznaczono 4 frakcje, tj. dostępną, związaną z tlenkami i wodorotlenkami, związaną z substancją organiczną i rezydualną.

Opis:
In this study, firstly, the effects of ammonia concentration, leaching time and solid/liquid ratio on the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite (ZnCO3) ore sample in aqueous ammonia solutions were investigated at room temperature by chemical, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. It was found that leaching ratio of zinc steeply increased from 30.1 to 76.2% with increasing ammonia concentration from 1.0 to 4.0 M and maximum zinc leaching ratio of 79.7% was reached after leaching in 13.3 M NH3 solution. The XRD pattern of the residue obtained after leaching in 4.0 M NH3 solution for 90 min at solid/liquid ratio of 0.15 g/mL, the optimum condition, showed that smithsonite phase in the ore sample almost completely dissolved whereas the gangue minerals goethite and calcite remained unaffected, confirming the selectivity of ammonia solution for zinc dissolution. Together with zinc, leaching ratios of cadmium were also determined. In second part of the study, precipitation tests (by complete drying at different temperatures) were conducted on dissolved zinc, carbonate and ammonia containing pregnant solutions obtained after selected leaching experiments. By complete drying of the pregnant solutions at low temperatures, i.e. 50°C, relatively pure solid zinc ammine carbonate (Zn(NH3)CO3) precipitates and at higher temperatures, i.e. 150°C, quite pure solid zinc carbonate hydroxide (Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6) precipitates could be prepared. High-temperature heating of Zn(NH3)CO3 and Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 precipitates at 450°C yielded single-phase zinc oxide (ZnO). The chemical compositions, FT-IR spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of some of the precipitates were also presented.

Industrial acidic zinc electrolyte has been treated with calcium compounds and/or concentrated ammonia solution and resulting crystalline phases as well as equilibrium mother liquors were analyzed in detail for dependence on preliminary dilution of electrolyte with water. Neutralized zinc electrolyte was an object of investigation in zinc(II) extraction with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) as an extractant. Dependencies of zinc(II) and contaminants extraction on equilibrium pH, isotherms of zinc(II) extraction and stripping have been studied. During simulated laboratory counter-current trial of zinc extraction a new zinc electrolyte (stripped solution) has been produced. Raffinates left after the process were purified and qualified as mineral magnesium-ammonium fertilizer solutions.

Acid leaching of Egyptian zinc ore from the Um Gheig area was carried out with sulfuric acid. This study determines the optimum conditions for dissolution of non-sulfide zinc ore. The optimum conditions are 25% -74m particle size, 45 °C temperature, 2 h leaching time, 1.1 stoichiometric molar ratio of H2SO4 to Zn, 1:3 solid/liquid ratio. The maximum filtration rate is 1.6 Mg Zn•m-2•day-1at pressure difference of 0.80 bar. The zinc recovery is about 90%. As the zinc ore contains zinc silicate, some additives were tested to enhance filtration and prevent formation of silica gel. To increase the added value of the product, zinc oxide was precipitated by a co-precipitation method in a nanosize powder with average particle size ~ 20 nm. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light using ZnO nanopowders produced at different conditions was investigated. Photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue (MB) concentration was reduced as much as 85% in 240 min with the produced nanoparticles.

Increasingly frequent use of zinc nanoparticles in everyday life increases the concentration of this element in the environment. At the same time, research into the influence of zinc nanoparticles on living organisms is still lacking. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of zinc oxide in molecular and nanoparticle form on Lepidium sativum. Studies have shown that the influence of zinc on growth and physiological features of Lepidium sativum depended on the form and the concentration of this metal in the soil. All of the analyzed zinc forms have activated the enzymatic antioxidant system of the plant, which demonstrates its sensitivity to soil contaminants.

Opis:
Modern production of non-ferrous metals is imperfect due to the loss of rock mass and metal in the technological chain ore mining to metal production. Processing of zinc oxide and oxidized copper ores by hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and flotation methods is associated with formation of dump cakes, clinkers and flotation tailings. Therefore, all these methods are characterized by a low coefficient of complex use of raw materials (for example, for the Waelz process this coefficient is not higher than 35%). To increase the degree of complex processing of oxide raw materials, it is necessary to change the attitude to raw materials and create industrial technologies based on new principles. The article presents theoretical and applied research results on complex processing of oxidized copper and zinc oxide ores based on the new attitude to raw materials and new effective technologies allowing us to increase significantly the level of raw materials’ complex processing. Theoretical regularities, features and optimal technological parameters of new methods of complex processing of oxide, zinc and oxidized copper ores were found based on the ideology of a universal technological raw material and the simultaneous production of several products in one furnace unit.

Analiza specjacyjna wykazała najwiekszą zawartość Zn w formie związanej z krystalicznymi tlenkami żelaza (frakcja VI), a najniższą we frakcji I i II, tj. w formach wodnorozpuszczalnych i wymiennych.

Opis:
The sensitivity of soil enzymes to soil contamination with zinc was analyzed. A laboratory experiment was performed on sandy loam at pH 7.0, sampled from arable land at a depth of 0 to 20 cm. Soil samples were passed through a sieve with 2 mm mesh size and contaminated with the following zinc doses: 0, 300, 600, 1200 and 2400 mg Zn2+ kg-1 soil. Zinc was applied in the form of aqueous solution of ZnCl2. Soil was mixed thoroughly with zinc, and its moisture content was brought to 50% capillary water capacity. The samples were incubated at 25°C. Beakers with soil samples were weighed once a week to replenish evaporated water. The activity of soil enzymes: dehydrogenases, urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase, arylsulfatase and b-glucosidase, was determined after 15, 30, 60 and 120 days of the experiment. The results were used to calculate soil resistance (RS), ED20 and ED50 values. The results of the study indicate that soil enzymes are characterized by varied sensitivity to excessive zinc concentrations, and that the RS index is a reliable measure of enzymatic responses to zinc pollution. The analyzed enzymes were classified in the following decreasing order in terms of their resistance to zinc: b-glucosidase> acid phosphatase > urease >arylsulfatase = alkaline phosphatase> catalase > dehydrogenases. Zinc continued to exert a negative effect on soil enzymes throughout the experiment (120 days). ED20 values for the analyzed enzymes in mg Zn2+ kg-1 DM soil were determined at: 103 for dehydrogenases, 184 for alkaline phosphatase, 233 for urease, 247 for arylsulfatase, 416 for acid phosphatase, 419 for catalase and 1373 for b-glucosidase.
Cynk stosowano w postaci wodnego roztworu ZnCl2. Następnie po dokładnym wymieszaniu gleby jej wilgotność doprowadzono do 50% kapilarnej pojemności wodnej i poddano inkubacji w cieplarce w temp. 25°C. Jeden raz w tygodniu zlewki przeważano w celu uzupełnienia ewentualnych ubytków wody. Po 15, 30, 60 i 120 dniach inkubacji część zlewek likwidowano i oznaczono aktywność enzymów glebowych: dehydrogenaz, ureazy, fosfatazy kwaśnej, fosfatazy alkalicznej, katalazy, arylosulfatazy i b-glukozydazy.

Zinc leaching residue is a good source of zinc and has a great potential to be utilized. However, it is very difficult to recover lead, zinc and silver from the residue by traditional technologies. In this study, a new technology based on conversions of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 in the residue to their respective sulfides by reduction roasting with coal powder followed by a flotation treatment was developed. The effects of roasting temperature, coal dosage, reaction time and pyrite dosage were investigated at a laboratory scale. The results showed that the conversion extent of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 under the optimal experimental conditions was 71.89 and 69.76%, respectively. A flotation concentrate containing 39.13% Zn, 6.93% Pb and 973.54 g/Mg Ag was obtained from the treated material, and the recovery of Zn, Pb and Ag was 48.38, 68.23 and 77.41%, respectively. The tailing containing ZnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 could be either stockpiled or further disposed.

Oxide ores are potential world raw materials sources of zinc manufacture. Despite a sufficiently high extraction level of zinc and lead known pyrometallurgical methods are characterized by formation of large quantity of industrial wastes therefore a complex use level of these raw materials is low. Hydrometallurgical methods are mainly applied for extraction of nonferrous metals. The present article contains the research results of complex processing an oxide ore of the Shaymerden deposit (Kazakhstan), consisting in the simultaneous production of a ferroalloy, calcium carbide and zinc sublimates from the ore in a thermal-ore arc electric furnace. The researches have been carried out with use of a HSC 5.1 software package (based on a principle of Gibbs energy minimum) and electrical smelting the ore in a monoelectrode arc electric controlled-output furnace. It was found, that in equilibrium conditions in a system ore-carbon-iron gaseous zinc is formed at Т > 1073 K, FeSi at Т > 1573 K, CaC2 at Т > 2073 K, Si at Т > 1673 K. The electrosmelting of ore in an arc furnace using of 38.7-40% coke and 16-28.4% steel cuttings the conversion degree of silicon into an alloy is 75-77%, calcium to calcium carbide 77-81%, zinc to sublimates 99.3%. The ferroalloy obtained contains 19.6-41.3% of silicon, the calcium carbide is characterized by capacity of 110-250 m3/kg, and the zinc sublimates contain 66-67% of zinc. The -suggested method allows to increase the combined usage of the ore from 35.6 to 89.6%.

Opis:
In this study, the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite ore sample (23.43% Zn) having goethite and calcite as main gangue minerals was investigated in sodium hydroxide solutions using Xray diffraction and chemical analyses. Within the studied NaOH concentration range (1-4 mole/dm3), higher leaching ratio values for Zn were obtained by leaching at 298 K because of the decreased stability of soluble zincate species in solution at higher temperatures. When the concentration of NaOH solution was increased from 1 to 3 mole/dm3 at 298 K, leaching ratio value of Zn increased from 3.8 to 70.1%. At 4 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, Zn leaching ratio value (70.9%) levelled off due to the formation of solid hydrated calcium zincate phase in leaching solution. On the other hand, very low leaching ratio values of Zn were obtained by leaching in 1 mole/dm3 NaOH solution at 298 K (3.8%) and 363 K (1.4%) due to the formation of solid zinc hydroxide and solid zinc oxide phases, respectively. It was observed that increasing leaching time from 1800 to 14400 s at 3 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, favoured the formation of hydrated calcium zincate phase and so decreased the leaching ratio of Zn to a lower value (60.6%). The effect of solid/liquid ratio was also investigated and it was found that when solid/liquid ratio was decreased, Zn leaching ratio values decreased at constant OH/Zn mole ratio and increased at constant NaOH concentration conditions. Besides, for some of the experiments, leaching ratio values of lead were also given.

Opis:
The role of copper in anti-inflammatory response includes several mechanisms. Antagonism between zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) and proper balance between the two elements in the organism may affect the course of inflammatory diseases. Copper is a component of Zn/Cu superoxide dismutase (Zn/Cu SOD) and other enzymes involved in the anti-inflammatory response of the organism. To investigate the serum copper level during inflammation and diseases, numerous researches were conducted. Copper deficiency or copper intoxication may lead to biological consequences. Copper deficiency may be caused by various factors, one of them is excessive zinc supplementation. The aim of the study was to investigate the alterations in the serum copper level after 2-week zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs-ZnO) administration. The second aim was to investigate serum copper level alterations after 2-week NPs-ZnO and single ketoprofen administration. The inflammatory state was induced in each group by the carrageenan injection at the 15th day of the experiment. The results indicate for the decrease in serum copper level in group receiving NPs-ZnO compared to control. Moreover, in groups receiving NPs-ZnO as well as ketoprofen, a decrease in serum copper level was observed. We may conclude that NPs-ZnO administration and also ketoprofen administration acts as anti-inflammatory agents and may induce a decrease in serum copper level.

Opis:
In this work, the structural changes occurred in a zinc carbonate (smithsonite) ore sample following heating at temperatures between 523 K and 1173 K were investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal (TG/DTA) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. Afterwards, the leaching characteristics of zinc from the ore sample and the heated ore samples in sodium hydroxide solutions were determined. While heating at 523 K did not cause any structural change in the ore sample, heating at 723 K completely converted smithsonite $(ZnCO_3)$ in the ore sample to zinc oxide $(ZnO)$, which resulted lower zinc leaching efficiencies of 40.6% and 62.0% for 3 and 4 mol/dm3 NaOH concentrations, respectively, in comparison to zinc leaching efficiencies (67.2% and 70.7%) obtained for the unheated ore sample. On the other hand, due to neoformation of dissolution resistant $ZnFe_2O_4$, $Ca_2ZnSi2O_7$ and $Zn_2SiO_4$ phases during heating and formation of $CaZn_2(OH)_6∙2H_2O$ phase during leaching, the leaching efficiency of zinc further decreased to 22.2% and 31.3%, respectively, in 3 and 4 $mol$ / $dm^3$ NaOH solutions for the ore sample heated at 1173 K. The formation of zinc-containing dissolution resistant phases by high-temperature heating was observed to be the only reason for the reduction in the zinc leaching efficiency (49.4% at 1173 K) at the highest NaOH concentration (8 mol/dm3) studied. In this work, the comparative precipitation studies were also conducted and crystalline zinc oxides with different morphologies could be precipitated at considerably high efficiencies from the selected pregnant solutions obtained following leaching.

The present paper shows the results of research whose aim was to establish the degree of the sensitivity of Betula pendula Roth seedlings to the adverse conditions of the zinc smelter sludge-silt waste. For the pot cultures post-floatation sludge-silt waste was brought to the laboratory and placed in pots (17 cm in top diameter). In the experiment the following soil variants were used: I - sludge-silt waste II - sludge-silt waste mixed with peat III - sludge-silt waste covered with 2.5 cm layer of garden soil IV - garden soil as a control type The seeds of Betula pendula trees growing on the post-floatation sludge-silt waste grounds had been collected in the vicinity of the dump. Additionally, seeds of birch from non-polluted region (Mirów) were used as a control group. In the experiment, the soil variants were used in three replicates and each pot received 25 seeds. At the end of experiment, the seedlings were counted and the shoot height and root length were measured. Significant differences exist between zinc heap and Mirów regions in pollen vitality and seed germination capacity. The experiment showed positive results for seedlings from zinc dump seeds growing on the variant II of soil and for seedlings from Mirów seeds growing on variants III and IV of soil.
Działalność przemysłowa stanowi największe, a zarazem najuciążliwsze źródło powstawania odpadów. W celu założenia doświadczenia wazonowego do laboratorium Katedry Ekologii sprowadzono odpady z hałdy poflotacyjnej. Doświadczenie obejmowało 24 doniczek i przygotowano następujące warianty podłoża: I wariant - podłoże z hałdy poflotacyjnej, II wariant - podłoże z hałdy poflotacyjnej z domieszką torfu, III wariant - podłoże z hałdy poflotacyjnej przykryte 2,5 cm warstwą gleby ogrodniczej IV wariant - kontrolny z ziemią inspektową.

The aim of this study was to synthesize zinc borate by using zinc carbonate, boric acid, reference zinc borate (reference ZB) as seed and to investigate effects of modifying agents and reaction parameters on hydrophobicity and yield, respectively. Different from the studies available in the literature, the effects of different modifying agents (propylene glycol (PG) (0–6%), kerosene (1–6%), oleic acid (OA) (1–6%)) with solvents (isopropyl alcohol (IPA), ethanol, methanol) added to reaction on hydrophobicity were investigated comparingly. Firstly, the effects of reaction parameters such as reaction time (1–5 h), reactant ratio (H3BO3/ZnO) (2–5), seed ratio (0–1.5%, in terms of boric acid, w/w), reaction temperature (323–393 K), cooling temperature (283–353 K) and stirring rate (400–700 rpm) on yield were investigated. Furthermore, reactions were carried out under determined reaction conditions in both magnetically and mechanically stirred systems. The product, zinc borate, was characterized by analytical methods, XRD (X-ray Diffraction), FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) techniques and measurement of contact angle which identified hydrophobicity was carried out. In conclusion, it was observed that zinc borate was synthesized successfully and different modifying agents with various solvents affected the hydrophobicity of zinc borate.
Opis:
Zinc ferrite ZnFe2O4 both in the micro and nano scale is widely used in various fields. The article discusses the structure of this compound and its properties in the nanoscale, which is clearly different from those which the ferrite shows in the microscale. The properties of dust generated electric arc furnace, which can contain up to 40% zinc, substantially in the form of ZnFe2O4 are disscused here. Specific properties (electric, magnetic, thermal) of zinc ferrite nanoparticles determine the very wide possibilities of their use, inter alia as catalysts, absorbents, gas sensors, and a tool to combat cancer.

Rubber products containing more than 2.5% of zinc compounds are classified as toxic to aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, the aim of the research was to develop pro-ecological rubber composites of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) with a reduced content of zinc ions. Acetylacetonate, gluconate and zinc ricinoleate were used as vulcanization activators alternatively to ZnO. Their application had no significant effect on the time and temperature of NBR vulcanization. Vulcanizates with slightly lower crosslink density and hardness, higher tensile strength and comparable resistance to weather aging were obtained. Application of zinc salts enabled a 10-fold reduction in the content of zinc ions in rubber products.

Opis:
Zinc is one of main trace elements of the body, that plays a catalytic, structural and control role. It is essential for cell division and the differentiation of arising cells, it is involved in homeostasis, immunological reactions, in apoptosis and ageing of the body. Zinc is also an element of many enzymes and proteins, and it is important in the spermatogenesis and synthesis of steroidal hormones as well as. About 30% of the world’s population suffers from an insufficient supply of zinc. Apart from an insufficient supply from food, some diseases and abnormal absorption of this element can be a cause of zinc deficiency. Diseases resulting from zinc deficiency may appear both in children and adults. Dietary supplementation of zinc preparations in many cases is necessary, but its independent use, without a proven deficiency and without consulting a doctor, may lead to the appearance of adverse effects as a result of abuse, including dangerous interactions with other applied preparations and food.

The effect of protein quality and dietary level of Fe, Zn and Cu on feed efficiency ratio and apparent absorption of these elements was studied in growing male Wistar rats during a six-week experiment. When the protein source was the limiting factor for animal growth and metal absorption, diet supplementation with trace elements was of questionable efficiency. The apparent absorption of trace elements depends on both their dietary level and the source of protein. No interactions during intestinal absorption between Fe, Zn and Cu were observed.

In the second and third experiments, a solution enhanced with 1M acetic acid (AA) was used as catholic solution. The results indicate that residual concentration of Zn+2 decreases, beginning with an initial value of 850 mg/kg in all portions of soil sample EK-1, EK-2, in addition to EK-3. It seems that the residual concentration of EK-3 (approached anode technique) was lower than that of EK-1 and EK-2 in identical portions.

It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc, zinc hydroxide chloride and silica. Dissolution of the metals from the material was determined as a function of solid to liquid ratio (50-150 kg/m3), temperature (20°C and 35°C) and agitation rate (300 and 900 rpm). The best results (50 g/dm3 Zn(II) at 78% zinc recovery) were obtained for 100 kg/m3 and the temperature of 20°C. Increase in the agitation rate had weak effect on the zinc yield. The final solutions were contaminated mainly by Fe(II, III) ions. Leaching of the material was an exothermic process with the reaction heat of about 800 kJ/kg.

The article presents the results of thermodynamic and experimental research on the processing of cinders from the firing of Shalkiya deposit lead-zinc ore tailings with the production of siliceous ferroalloys. Thermodynamic modeling carried out using the HSC-6.0 complex based on the Gibbs energy minimization principle showed that the interaction occur with the formation of CaSiO3, FeSiO3, MgSiO3, K2OˑSiO2, FeSi, Fe5Si3, SiC, Fe3Si, Si, SiOg, FeSi2.33, FeSi2, CaSi, Zn, Zng, Pb, Pbg; an increase in the iron amount in the system allows increasing the silicon extraction degree into the alloy at 1800°C to 76%, to reduce the silicon concentration in the alloy from 41 to 24%; FS25 grade ferrosilicon formed at 1752-1867°C in the presence of 88-100% iron, and FS45 grade ferrosilicon – at 1863-1900°C and 20-22.4% iron. Electric melting of a charge containing 63.83% calcined cinder of tailings, 19.15% coke, and 17.02% steel chips allows to obtain FS45 grade ferrosilicon (44.1-43.9% Si) with the extraction of 69.7% silicon and sublimates with the content of 32-38% zinc and lead. The results obtained allow complex processing of lead-zinc sulfide ore tailings with the extraction of not only non-ferrous metals, but also silicon in the ferroalloy.

Despite of a large reductions of costs energy produced by solar panels is still too expensive. There are two approaches to change this situation: by (a) increase of device output and/or (b) reduction of device costs by use of cheaper alternative materials. In this article we discuss the latter approach – (a) replacement of ITO by ZnO with metallic conductivity, (b) change of device architecture, and (c) use of alternative materials.

Opis:
Coins are foreign objects that are commonly ingested by children and pets due to their shiny appearance and bright colors. The current study investigated whether Turkish coins can lead to zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) toxicity as a result of exposure to simulated gastric juice (i.e. hydrochloric acid solution simulating the gastric environment). Five groups of coins were exposed to simulated gastric juice (0.15 N, pH:1-2) for a period of 4 (Group 1), 12 (Group 2), 24 (Group 3), 48 (Group 4), 72 (Group 5) and 120 h (Group 5) at body temp. (37°C). Zinc and copper levels were determined in the gastric acid solution by using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The coins were also evaluated for corrosive damage and weight loss. Group 5 had statistically higher Cu and Zn levels versus the other groups. However, at body temp. (37°C), copper and zinc levels increased steadily in parallel to the duration for which the coin remained in the stomach after ingestion. After 120-hour exposure at 37°C, all coins had various types of damage compared to the baseline, such as color alteration, erosion, and visible surface cavities. The mechanisms relating to local and systemic copper and zinc toxicity caused by coin ingestion is yet to be clarified for both Turkish and international coins. Therefore, it can be foreseen that intervention is required in the first 24 h after ingesting 5 kuruş coins and, unless removed spontaneously in 48 h, such intervention is needed for the other coins.

Study results dealing with zinc alloy coatings obtained from electroplating baths Chemoalloy Fe and Ni CHS are presented in the paper. An effect of current codeposition on the morphology of surface coatings was tested. It was found that a Zn-Fe dip gave the shiny alloy coatings. A temperature increase to 25 °C of Zn-Fe bath caused a reduction of coating thickness and surface dulling. The resulting Zn-Ni alloy coatings were characterized by high uniformity and lack of luster. The coatings of lamellar structure were formed with the increase of electric current density.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the application of bioleaching technique to reduce content of selected heavy metals (Zn, Cu) in sewage sludge, and hence to indicate possibilities for metals recovery from this type of waste. Bioleaching experiments were carried out with mixed bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, using leaching media: ferrous sulfate with different concentrations of Fe2+ (2 g/dm3 and 9 g/dm3) and sulfuric acid (VI). Dynamics of the increase in zinc concentration in biological systems was almost identical for both 9 g Fe2+/dm3 and 2 g Fe2+/dm3 in samples. However, higher values of Cu concentration were achieved using a medium with iron(II) salt 9 g/dm3 than in a 2 g/dm3 solution. Bioleaching with 9 g Fe2+/dm3 allowed for a nearly 20-fold reduction of zinc content and a 2-fold reduction in copper content in sewage sludge. Using 9 g/dm3 ferrous sulfate bioleaching could dissolve 94.8% Zn and 58.9%, whereas chemical leaching dissolved 47.3% Zn and 4.2% Cu.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the extraction and separation of zinc, lead, silver, and bismuth from a refractory bismuth refining slag via a hydrometallurgical route. The process consists of a preliminary leaching of zinc with water, followed by the selective leaching of lead and silver with a calcium chloride solution, leading to the crystallization of lead chloride and the cementation of silver. The diagrams of the total concentrations of [Pb]/[Ag] versus [Cl-] and temperature in the Pb/Ag-Cl-H2O system were drawn, respectively, to determine the optimum concentration of leaching agent and leaching temperature. The potential-pH diagram of the Pb/Ag/Bi-H2O system indicates that the preferential leaching of lead and silver could be achieved. Finally, 98.8% of lead and 90.4% of silver were selectively removed by further leaching the water leaching residue with 400 g/dm3 of CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5 and 80 °C, while only 3.7% of bismuth was leached in this stage. Fifty-nine percent of lead in the leach liquor was separated out as PbCl2 by natural cooling. Ninety-five percent of silver in mother liquor was recovered by cementation with a lead sheet. The depleted CaCl2 solution can be sent to the leaching step again to close the loop.

This study aimed to analyze the impact of Zn on the growth and the antioxidant response of Lens culinaris. For this purpose, the seeds were germinated for 6 days in an MS/2 culture medium with different Zn concentrations. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein contents, and antioxidant enzymes activities were measured in both parts of the plant by spectrometry. The results showed that from the Zn concentration of 250 µM, the growth of lentils is inversely proportional to the concentration of Zn in the culture medium. The variations in the level of MDA are not very significant, but at 10 000 μM of Zn in the medium, the level becomes very important, whilst the total protein content decreased. Besides, the evaluation of enzymatic activities indicated that the decline of peroxidase (POD) is concomitant with the increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and that glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as catalase (CAT) reach their maximum activities at 10 000 µM and 3000 µM of Zn in upper parts and roots, respectively. These findings revealed that MDA is a real indicator of oxidative stress in Lens culinaris and that this plant is tolerant to the presence of Zn in the culture medium by developing a powerful antioxidant system, but beyond a certain concentration its antioxidant system becomes ineffective and the plant enters a stress state.

The presence of arsenic in zinc sulphide concentrates is particularly harmful, because it creates problems in zinc electrolysis. The main source of arsenic in non-ferrous metallurgy is arsenopyrite (FeAsS). In oxidative roasting of zinc concentrates, FeAsS oxidizes to arsenic oxides (As2O3, As2O5). In this connection a natural FeAsS was examined, and also the distribution of arsenic in the products of the roasting process, the cycle of sulphuric acid obtaining and the leaching of zinc calcine were studied. The arsenic contamination of soils in the vicinity of nonferrous metals smelter KCM SA, Plovdiv, Bulgaria as a result of zinc and lead productions has been studied.

A three – year field experiment was carried out on soil which belonged to a very good rye complex. The experiment was established according to randomized split-plot method, in three replications. The following factors were examined: factor I: edible potato varieties (Satina and Typhoon), and factor II: doses and timing of UGmax application. As a result of conducted research, significantly smaller copper content in potato tubers was found, after usage of the soil preparation UGmax, in comparison with a control object, while zinc and manganese content continued to show only a downward trend. The influence of weather conditions and potato varieties on the copper cumulation in the dry mass of potato tuber was proved. An important influence of the factors of the experiment on the uptake of researched macroelements with the potato tuber yield was also shown.

Zinc pollution in wastewater is a global problem because it is highly toxic. Zinc is commonly used in industries that transfer the water containing zinc directly into water sources, leading to pollution. Exposure to a high level of zinc causes major health problems. This study evaluated the adsorption of zinc ions from aqueous system using modified biopolymers of chitosan by crosslinking with sulphates using the batch adsorption method; the concentration was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The sulphate cross-linked chitosan (SCC) was characterised by several method. The effects of various experimental parameters such as pH, contact time, concentration, adsorbent dosage and temperature were investigated. Under the optimised conditions, the percentage efficiency for the removal of zinc(II) was up to 85%. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were used to analyse the equilibrium adsorption data along with kinetic studies. Various thermodynamic parameters have also been reported.

Opis:
The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

Opis:
The work aimed at determining the susceptibility to zinc accumulation of soils exposed to potential influence of zinc-works. Estimation of soil zinc binding ability was conducted by a modified metod suggested by H.P. Blume and G. Brummer, according to which soils are divided into 5 classes differing with heavy metal accumulation ability depending on their physicochemical properties. The most important parameter of this division is soil pH, whereas the content of organic matter and < 0.02 mm particles fraction content in soil play an auxiliary role. Conducted assessment of zinc binding ability in soils revealed that in the area of potential influence of zinc-works, soils with low zinc accumulation ability have the biggest share. Among all analysed soils, 68 % of samples collected from the 0–10 cm layer and 58 % from the 40–50 cm layer reveal low or medium zinc binding abilities. Such high percentage of soils with these disadvantageous properties is mainly due to the fact that in these areas there is the highest number of acid soils with granular size distribution of loose sands. In case when the zinc-works starts operation, there is a serious potential of introducing excessive zinc amounts to food chain.
W przypadku uruchomienia produkcji cynkowni istnieje duże prawdopodobieństwo wprowadzenia nadmiernych ilości cynku do łańcucha troficznego.

Metals in soils occur in different forms, which are more or less mobile, which means bioavailable. The aim of this study was to assess the content of zinc in cultivated plants, depending on soil properties but also its content in soil and fractions in typical and unpolluted region, which is the Podlasie Province. The research material consisted of samples taken from arable soil in 81 points of Podlasie Province. Basic physicochemical properties and content of soil fraction < 0.02 mm in samples were determined. Pseudo-total content of zinc and its fractional composition in soil as well as zinc content in plants was evaluated. Correlation cśfficients between the content of zinc in plants and physicochemical properties of soil were calculated. It was found that examined soil contained natural amount of zinc, characteristic for uncontaminated soils. The most of zinc was associated with the organic matter fraction and the least with residual fraction. Among the analysed plants from light soils, the most of zinc was found in rye. Plants from medium-heavy soils contained similar amount of zinc, with the exception of maize. Correlation cśfficients do not confirm the significant relationship between soil properties and zinc in plants. Significant relationship was stated between bioaccumulation factors and the content of zinc in plants.
Zawartość cynku w poszczególnych frakcjach układała się w następujący szereg: frakcja związana z substancją organiczną > frakcja związana z tlenkami i wodorotlenkami > frakcja wymienialna > frakcja rezydualna. Wśród analizowanych roślin uprawianych na glebach lekkich najwięcej cynku zawierało żyto. Rośliny uprawiane na glebach średnich, z wyjątkiem kukurydzy, zawierały zbliżone ilości cynku. Nie stwierdzono istotnych zależności pomiędzy zawartością cynku w roślinach a właściwościami gleb. Istotne zależności wystąpiły tylko w przypadku współczynnika bioakumulacji.

Opis:
The aim of this work was the assessment of the age, sex, way of nutrition, environment and health state influence on zinc content in hair of population living in the Middle Pomerania. Within years of 2005-2007 hair coming from 416 persons from a ten months old child to a 75 years old person was analyzed. All people were divided into four age groups: children (0-15 years), youth (16-25), adults (26-50) and the elderly (51-75). 3-centimeters long hair (counting from the skin) were put to chemical analyze. Then dried samples were weighed and mineralized with mixture of nitric and tetraoxochloric acides (mixed in proportion of 5:1). Zink determination was done by method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry using spectrometer ASA-3. Average zinc content in hair of researched population amounted to 167±58 7g g-1. Least of all zinc was ascertained in children hair (av. 125 7g g-1), and most of all in youth (194 7g g-1). In all age groups females had more of this metal (av. 180 7g g-1) than males (156 7g g-1). Average value of zinc for people living in a village was 147 7g g-1, and living in towns and cities 181 7g g-1. The least of zinc we have found at persons being on the meat- or milk-free diet (av. 157 7g g-1) and the most at persons that did not restrict in eating meat and milk products (197 7g g-1). The persons suffering from cardiovascular disease or hyperplasia prostate had adequately 221 and 195 7g g-1 Zn, considerably above the level in hair of without symptoms diseases persons (156 7g g-1). Smaller content of this element had persons suffering from atherosclerosis or hypertension (adequately 132 and 142 7g g-1).
Celem pracy było określenie zależności między wiekiem, płcią, sposobem odżywiania, środowiskiem i stanem zdrowia a zawartością cynku we włosach ludzi zamieszkujących Pomorze Środkowe. W latach 2005-2007 poddano badaniom 416 osób w wieku od 10 miesięcy do 75 lat. Wszystkich podzielono na cztery grupy wiekowe. Zawartość cynku we włosach badanych osób wynosiła średnio 167}58 μg g-1. Najmniej cynku stwierdzono we włosach dzieci (0-15 lat), średnio 125 μg g-1, a najwięcej we włosach młodzieży (16-25 lat) – 194 μg g-1.

Opis:
This study aimed to produce gellan gum-based hydrogels with the addition of zinc oxide as a potential dressing material. Hydrogels with ZnO concentrations of 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.04% were prepared, micrometric and nanometric ZnO particles were used, and a CaCl2 crosslinker was added to one part of the samples. All samples (14 types) produced by the freeze drying method were characterized with high swelling properties (>2000%), what is important to ensure the absorption of exudates from wounds. Samples with ZnO particles cross-linked with CaCl2 lost less mass after incubation in aqueous media and were characterized by better dimensional stability than those without crosslinking. The pH of the extracts of the samples containing ZnO particles was more neutral (pH 7.0-7.6) than that of the control gellan gum samples (pH of 5.5-6.1). The zinc release from cross-linked samples was twice as high for those containing nanometric particles than for micrometric particles (1.94 ± 0.04 mg/l and 0.93 ± 0.02, respectively). Relatively large amounts of released zinc species in the case of samples containing ZnO nanoparticles are promising in the context of the antibacterial properties and treatment of infected wounds. A lower amount of zinc released from samples with ZnO microparticles could be sufficient to prevent the development of the infection. Furthermore, both materials show satisfactory cytocompatibility with L929 fibroblasts, as shown by Alamar blue and live/dead viability tests, making them prospective candidates for wound healing

Opis:
Copper is a physiologically occurring trace element, the availability of which to wild small mammals is constantly increasing. This research deals with the questions of how copper in doses equivalent to those found in the natural environment from polluted areas (Cu I – 150 mg kg-1, Cu II – 600 mg kg-1) influences homeostasis of small rodents. The following were used as indicators: ratios of organs to body mass, blood parameters (haematocrit, haemoglobin), copper, iron and zinc concentrations in selected tissues and in excrements. The bank vole was used as a model species (n = 72). Haematocrit was assessed using a haematocrit reader, while haemoglobin was determined with a spectrophotometer. The content of Cu, Fe and Zn was analyzed using the flame method. Ratios of the liver and kidneys to body mass were significantly lower in animals exposed to 600 mg kg-1 Cu than in the control. Copper accumulated in the liver, kidneys, brain and excrements of the Cu II animals of both sexes. It also influenced the iron and zinc homeostasis by decreasing the iron concentration in the kidneys of both sexes, in the liver of females and in male testes. Additionally, it caused a decline in iron excretion in females. Compared to the control, the zinc concentration was significantly higher in the liver and brain of animals exposed to copper solutions as well as in the kidneys of copper treated males. Along with an increase in copper, the zinc concentration in faeces decreased significantly. In conclusion, copper pollution influences negatively the homeostasis of small mammals. Consequently it may interfere with trophic chains, which could affect adversely the degree of biodiversity.

Opis:
Herein, the optimization of inhibitive action of the ethanol extract of oil from Picralima nitida leaves, towards acid corrosion of zinc, was tested using weight loss and thermometry methods. We found that the extract acts as a good corrosion inhibitor for zinc corrosion in 0.1 M HCl solutions. The inhibition action of the extract was discussed in view of Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This revealed that spontaneous processes govern the adsorption of the extract on zinc surface. Herein, the inhibition efficiency (IE) increases in line with corresponding increase in extract concentration. The temperature effect of the corrosion inhibition on the IE was also studied. This indicated that the presence of the extract increases the needed activation energy of the corrosion reaction. Furthermore, in our work, an optimal inhibition efficiency IE (%) of 86.78 was obtained at optimum inhibitor concentration of 1.2 gl-1, optimum temperature and time of 313 k and 8 hrs, respectively. From the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be said, then, that Picralima nitida extract provides good protection to zinc against pitting corrosion in chloride ion containing solutions.

Opis:
Recently the one-dimensional ZnO nanostructures have attracted much attention in gas sensor applications owing to their increased role of the surface. The authors have obtained ZnO rods of sub-micron size using the solution growth method with the growth temperature below 100.C. Investigations indicate that the rods have a well-defined hexagonal morphology and a wurtzite structure. The best uniformity and alignment of the sub-micron crystals was however obtained when electrodeposition from aqueous solution was developed. Sizes of these rods depend on the growth parameters. Moreover electrodeposition leads to a faster growth rate of ZnO sub-micron rods (2 hrs) as compared to the growth from solution (8 hrs). After electrodeposition the rods can be easily reoriented in external electric fields by using substrates with electrodes of appropriate geometry and configuration (dielectrophoretic effect). This enables the preparation of samples which can be used in gas sensor technology.

The aim of this study was to investigate manganese and zinc recoveries from spent zinc-carbon and alkaline battery powder. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, ascorbic acid dosage, reaction temperature and leaching time on zinc and manganese dissolutions was investigated. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions were determined as: 3 hours, 70 °C, 0.5 M of sulfuric acid concentration, 13 g/dm3 of ascorbic acid dosage, 1/20 g/cm3 of solid/liquid ratio and 200 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, dissolution efficiencies were 99.99% for Zn and 99.25% for Mn. In addition, dissolution kinetics of manganese was undertaken, and the activation energy was found to be 7.04 kJ/mol. Using 3 M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature, 95.35% of Zn (at pH 8) and 93.66% of Mn (at pH 10) were precipitated from the leaching solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH, precipitations of Zn and Mn were 91.63% and 96.39%, respectively. Based on the experimental results, a flowsheet of zinc and manganese recovery was proposed.

Flotation of smithsonite coming from a cerussite flotation circuit was investigated using Armac C and Armac T as cationic collectors and their mixtures with potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) as an anionic collector. Under optimum condition using Armac T with sodium hexamethaphosphate as a de-pressant, a smithsonite concentrate with 42% Zn and 89.6% recovery is obtained while in the presence of sodium silicate depressant Armac C produces a concentrate containing 40.8% Zn with 92.5% recovery. However, Armac T acts a little more selectively than Armac C but their mixture with KAX act inversely. The KAX-Armac C mixed collector improves the Zn grade and recovery of the flotation concentrate while KAX-Armac T does not. At the mixture ratio of KAX - Armac C 2:1, the amine collector consump-tion is decreased and an optimal concentrate with 94% recovery and 43% Zn grade is obtained without any gangue depressant reagents.

The field experiment was conducted in the years of 2012–2014 in the Agricultural Experimental Station Zawady belonging to the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce. The two factor experiment was set up in the split-plot system in triplicate. The investigated factors were: I – three varieties of edible potato: Bartek, Gawin and Honorata. II – five ways of care: 1. Harrier herbicide 295 ZC – 2.0 dm3·ha-1; 2. Harrier herbicide 295 ZC – 2.0 dm3·ha-1 with the biostimulator Kelpak SL – 4.0 dm3·ha-1; 3. Sencor herbicide 70 WG – 1.0 kg·ha-1; 4. Sencor herbicide 70 WG – 1.0 kg·ha-1 with the biostimulator Asahi SL – 1.5 dm3·ha-1; 5. The control object – mechanical care. The content of zinc and copper and their collection with the yield of tubers significantly depended on the ways of care, genetic factor and climatic conditions in the years of the study. In the objects (2, 4) where herbicides were used with biostimulators, a greater concentration of zinc was obtained in relation to the control object and the remaining (3, 5) in which only herbicides were used. The applied care methods did not affect the content of copper in the analysed tubers. The greatest collection of zinc an copper with the yield of tubers was obtained in the objects: where the mixture of the Sencor herbicide 70 WG – 1.0 kg·ha-1 was used with the biostimulator Asahi SL – 1.5 dm3-1 and herbicide Sencor 70 WG in a dose of – 1.0 kg ·ha-1.

A field experiment was conducted in Międzyrzec Podlaski, (51°59’ N and 22°47’ E), Poland in the period from 2015 to 2017. The experiment was a two-way random split-plot arrangement of plots with three replicates. The following factors were examined: three varieties of potato – Honorata, Jelly, Tajfun, and four variants of application of biostimulants (Kelpak SL, Titanit, GreenOk, BrunatneBio Złoto). The control object comprised potato plants sprayed with distilled water. Biostimulators were applied to potato plants three times (beginning of flowering, full flowering and after flowering of the plants). The aim of the study was to determine the effect of biostimulants on the content and uptake of zinc and copper with the yield of potato tubers. High amount of rainfall in 2017 contributed to an increase in the content of zinc and copper in potato tubers. The tubers of potatoes treated with BrunatneBio Złoto had the highest contenting uptake of Zn and Cu compared to the control plants. The content of microelements in the tubers was significantly dependent on the genotype. The highest concentrations of Zn and Cu were found in the Honorata tubers, and the largest uptake was observed in the Jelly variety.

Opis:
As reported in the paper by Grzebisz et al. (this issue), maize crop treated foliarly with fertilizer zinc at early stages of growth produced significantly high yields. Growth analysis procedures were applied to explain various effects of fertilizer zinc on grain yield increase and zinc accumulation and redistribution among maize organs in the course of the growing season. Therefore, based on the obtained zinc uptake characteristics, two major and one minor, but time-separated hot spots of zinc accumulation by maize plants have been distinguished. The first one, as described by RUR-Zn data, extended from the BBCH7 to BBCH9 stages. The second one, as expressed by CUR-Zn data, appeared during the milk stage of kernels growth and could be decisive for kernels sink capacity for accumulating carbohydrates. A minor hot spot, which occurred at tasselling may be responsible for pollen production and activity. The first zinc hot spot has also revealed the diagnostic problem of soil and plant tests for zinc. Current tests tend to overestimate plant zinc nutritional status, and therefore need to be urgently revised. Vegetative organs such as leaves and stems were only the minor sources of zinc for developing maize kernels. During grain filling period, most zinc absorbed by maize plants originated from soil resources.

Zinc oxide NPs play an important role too, since ZnO has direct band gap of 3.37eV, large exiton binding energy of 60meV, sorption effect, room temperature ferromagnetism and others. So they can be used in varies perspective electron devices. In this paper the optical parameters and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization of Zn implanted quartz during NP formation at annealing are reported.Optical-grade high-pure (OH-: 50ppb) amorphous quartz slides were implanted by 64Zn+ ions with fluence of 5×1016/cm2 and energy of 50keV. To avoid the magnificent substrate heating during implantation the ion current density was less than 0.5μA/cm2. Than the samples were subjected to isochronally during 1h oxidation in temperature ranges from 400 up to 800oC. The Zn contained phase creation and its thermal evolution were investigated by recording the optical transmittance spectra at room temperature in a spectral range of 200-800nm and by photoluminescence at temperatures of 10-300K in a spectral range of 350-800nm using an illumination of He-Cd laser with wavelength of 325nm. Visualization and identification of NPs was made by study of the cross section samples TEM fitted with electron diffraction, an EDAX detector attachment for X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and with a high angle annular dark field detector (HAADF) for scanning operation. The EDS maps of the element distribution and the NP sizes were determined in the scanning TEM regime. As a result of these studies it was found that after the quartz implantation by 64Zn+ ions with fluence of 5×1016/cm2 and energy of 50keV the amorphous metallic Zn NPs with an average radius of 3 nm were created. During process of sequentially isochronally furnace annealing in oxygen atmosphere in 1h in temperature ranges from 400 up to 800oC in samples there was phase transformation from metallic Zn phase to its oxide form. After annealing at 800oC the Zn NPs transform to the ZnO or/and Zn2SiO4 phase with average radius of 4,5nm.

Zinc fuel is considered as a kind of promising energy sources for marine propeller. As one of the key steps for zinc marine energy power system, zinc hydrolysis process had been studied experimentally in a fixed bed reactor. In this study, we focus on the characteristics of micron zinc particle hydrolysis. The experimental results suggested that the steam inner diffusion is the controlling step of accumulative zinc particles hydrolysis reaction at a relative lower temperature and a relative higher water partial pressure. In other conditions, the chemical reaction kinetics was the controlling step. And two kinds of chemical reaction kinetics appeared in experiments: the surface reaction and the gas-gas reaction. The latter one occurs usually for larger zinc particles and high reaction temperature. Temperature seems to be one of the most important parameters for the dividing of different reaction mechanisms. Several parameters of the hydrolysis process including heating rate, water partial pressure, the particle size and temperature were also studied in this paper. Results show that the initial reaction temperature of zinc hydrolysis in fixed bed is about 410 oC. And the initial reaction temperature increases as the heating rate increases and as the water partial pressure decreases. The total hydrogen yield increases as the heating rate decreases, as the water partial pressure increases, as the zinc particle size decreases, and as the reaction temperature increases. A hydrogen yield of more than 81.5% was obtained in the fixed bed experiments.

Soil subject to a three-year pot experiment was analyzed, in which the following factors were considered: (i) soil contamination with nickel (0, 75, 150 and 225 mg Ni kg⁻¹ of soil); (ii) liming (0 Ca and Ca in a dose calculated according to 1 Hh of soil); (iii) organic fertilization (with no organic fertilization, rye straw and brown coal from the Turów coalmine). The test plant was orchardgrass, which was harvested in the amount of four cuts each year of the experiment. The copper and zinc fractions were assessed using the BCR method, whereas the pH was calculated using the potentiometer method. The total content of copper and zinc in the analyzed soil did not exceed the values of the geochemical background of the soils of Poland. No impact of the varied content of nickel in the soil on the total content and distribution of Cu and Zn was found in the investigated fractions. Liming caused an increase in the total content of zinc in the analyzed soil and a decrease in the content of Cu and Zn in the F1 fraction. The straw and brown coal caused an increase in the content of both metals in the soil in the F3 fraction.

Municipal refuse may increase heavy metal concentration in soil, even at low levels, and their resulting long-term cumulative health effects are among the leading health concerns all over the world. In this study, we investigated the concentration of heavy metals in soils and edible plant leaves grown in an abandoned dumpsite along Akachi road in Owerri municipality. The soil samples were collected at each plot using a soil auger at the depth of 0-10 cm. Leaves of dominant edible plant species were selected and collected from each sample plot. The samples were dried in an oven with forced air at 40 °C, milled to fine powder then digested with 10 ml concentrated HNO3 and 5 ml concentrated HClO4 and were analyzed for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Al, and Zn, using an H183200 MultiParameter Bench Photometer. Result showed that metals in in the sampled soils included (in order of quantity) Cr: 150-280 >Fe: 116.50-203 >Cu: 12.4-18.8 >Mn: 0-20 >Al: 0.08-0.16 >Zn: 0-1.4 mg kg-1 Dw. Moreover, levels of metals in the edible plant leaves are in the order of: Zn>Fe>Cu>Al>Mn>Cr. Zn, in particular, was higher than FAO/WHO recommended limits. Still, application of Pollution Load Index and Ecological risk models showed that the area is unpolluted and safe for use. Daily Metal Intake estimates indicated that zinc is mostly consumed from the plant species. The trends in Transfer Factor for the heavy metal in vegetable samples studied were in order: Zn>Al>Cu>Mn>Fe>Cr. Therefore, abandoned solid waste dumpsites contained significant concentrations of heavy metals which are later absorbed and accumulated by plants growing it.

Opis:
Zinc is an essential element for all living organisms, but overexposure to this element can have strongly toxic effects. A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the influence of different zinc concentrations (0, 100, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800 mg Zn2+ kg-1 of soil) on the soil biological activity by analyzing changes in soil stability over time and by determining the resistance (RS) of microorganisms and soil enzyme activity. The influence of Zn2+ on the growth and development of oat and white mustard was evaluated. Overexposure to zinc inhibited the growth of soil microorganisms, the activity of soil enzymes, and the growth and development of plants. Excessive zinc doses cause lower microbial biodiversity and enzyme activity. Bacteria of the genus Azotobacter were most sensitive and spore-forming oligotrophic bacteria were least sensitive to excessive zinc doses. β-glucosidase was most resistant and arylsulfatase was least resistant to the analyzed element. The resistance of the tested microorganisms and enzymes decreased with an increase in zinc accumulation in the soil environment. White mustard was more sensitive to zinc contamination than oat and zinc doses of 2400 and 4800 mg Zn2+ kg-1 led to the death of white mustard plants. The results of this study indicate that soil contamination with zinc poses a threat for living organisms. In areas with a higher risk of zinc deposition, the content of this element in soils should be monitored more frequently than prescribed by environmental protection regulations.

In this paper, recovery of manganese and zinc from alkaline battery paste by leaching under atmospheric condition using elemental sulfur as a reductive agent and sulfuric acid was investigated. Different dissolution parameters, acid concentrations, liquid-to-solid ratios, reaction temperatures, leaching times and amounts of elemental sulfur were studied in detail. According to results, the Mn dissolution in reductive acidic media was an intermediate-controlled process with activation energy of 10.21±2.60 kJ/mol. After the leaching step, Mn and Zn were selectively precipitated from the leaching solution using sodium hydroxide. After solid/liquid separation, manganese(II,III) oxide (Mn3O4) was obtained by drying at 105 °C in air. Next, Mn3O4 was converted to manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) by heating at 800 °C in air. After that the solution containing Zn(OH)42- was treated with sulfuric acid to form zinc hydroxide, separated and next converted to zinc oxide by heating at 600 °C in air. The final products were characterized by XRD. The results showed that the proposed process can be effectively used for recovery of Mn and Zn from alkaline batteries.

Introduction and aim. Given the potential relationship between oxidative stress and fibromyalgia and well-documented antioxidant efficacy of zinc, the present study aimed to determine serum zinc concentration in FM patients as compared to healthy controls, as well as to identify the correlation of serum zinc concentration with the body mass index (BMI) and sleep quality. Material and methods. In this case-control study, 54 fibromyalgia patients were consecutively recruited between October 01, 2021 and December 01, 2021. The control group consisted of 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results. Fibromyalgia group had significantly lower zinc concentration, higher body mass index, and lower sleep quality scores as compared to the healthy control group. The correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between serum zinc concentration and body mass index and a significantly positive correlation between serum zinc concentration and sleep quality both in fibromyalgia and healthy control groups. Conclusion. Our results both support the hypothesis that low serum zinc concentration plays a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and indicate that fibromyalgia may lead to weight gain and poor sleep quality, which needs to be confirmed in large-cohort studies.

This study examined the biosorption process of Ni(II) and Zn(II) from an aqueous solution by dead biomass of Yarrowia lipolytica. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature. The biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, which indicated the participation of hydroxyl, carboxyl, amide and amine groups in the process of binding the metal ions. The results showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions closely followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium data of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions at 20, 30 and 40°C fitted the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the equilibrium data, with a maximum biosorption capacity of the Y. lipolytica biomass for Ni(II) and Zn(II) of 30.12 and 44.44 mg/g respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the biosorption of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions onto the Y. lipolytica was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic.

The report presents research efforts on the synthesis of Zn/MoS2 composite coatings by electrochemical reduction from a sulphate-borate bath containing MoS2 powder as a dispersion phase at various concentrations. The structure of the Zn/MoS2 composite coatings was characterised and the effect of MoS2 particles embedded on their microhardness was evaluated. The coatings produced are characterized by a compact, homogeneous structure and a good connection to a steel substrate. The incorporation of MoS2 particles into the zinc matrix has an influence on the structure and morphology of the Zn/MoS2 composite coatings. It was found that the presence of MoS2 particles increases surface roughness along with coating hardness. The incorporation of the MoS2 particles into the zinc matrix slightly improves the corrosion resistance compared to Zn coatings, making the corrosion potential shift towards more electropositive values.

Soil plays the most important role in the cycling of elements in the terrestrial environment. Contamination of soil with heavy metals have effect on all soil organism and plants. For this reason, studies have been carried out to assess the possibility of neutralising the effect of zinc (0, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 mg Zn kg,-1 of soil) on soil properties by applying neutralising substances (compost, bentonite and zeolite). Soil acidity and sorption properties depended on zinc contamination and on the type of neutralising substances added. In the series without an addition of neutralising substances, increasing zinc soil contamination resulted in a decrease in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity and in the saturation degree of the degree of base saturation, and an increase in soil hydrolytic acidity. An addition of bentonite to zinc-contaminated soil had the most advantageous effect of all the additions of neutralising substances on the tested soil properties. It resulted in an increase in soil pH, in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity, in the degree of base saturation and simultaneously decreased soil hydrolytic acidity compared to the series without additions. Adding zeolite and compost to soil had a small and usually insignificant effect on soil acidity and soil sorption properties.

Opis:
To obtain anti-corrosive thermo-diffusion zinc coatings, the authors use highly effective zinc saturating mixtures. This technology makes it possible to obtain coatings with a high zinc content in the δ-phase as well as a zinc-rich phase of FeZn13 (ζ-phase) on the coating surface. As a result of long-term studies into the corrosion properties of thermo-diffusion zinc (TDZ) coatings conducted by the authors, a number of features of their corrosive behavior have been established. The corrosion rate of those coatings in desalted and chloride-containing media is lower than those of galvanic or hot-dip zinc coatings. The corrosion behavior depends on the content of zinc on the surface and the texture features of the coating. The results showed that on the surface of thermo-diffusion coatings in the corrosion on media containing chloride ions, zinc hydroxychloride (simonkolleite - Zn5Cl2[OH]8[H2O]) has been formed. Compared to coatings obtained by other methods, the rate of simonkolleite formation was higher on TDZ coatings, which might have a positive effect on their resistance in aggressive atmospheres.

An analysis of the effect of drawing speed on the formation of a zinc coating in the multi-stage fine steel wire drawing process has been carried out in the article. Pre-hardened 2.2 mm-diameter material was drawn into 1.00 mm-diameter wire in 6 draws on a multi-stage drawing machine. The drawing process was carried out at a drawing speed of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 20 m/s, respectively. Mechanical tests were tests were performed for the final wires to determine their yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, uniform and total elongation and reduction in area. The thickness of the zinc coating on the wire surface was determined by the gravimetric method and based on metallographic examination. The use of electron scanning microscopy, on the other hand, enabled the identification of individual phases in the zinc coating. The above investigations were supplemented with corrosion testing of 1.00 mm-diameter wires. It has been demonstrated that drawing speed significantly influences not only the thickness of the zinc coating on the drawn wire surface, buts also its morphology and corrosion resistance.

In response to the trend toward sustainable management of by-products from the pulp and paper industry as well as plant waste, practical and economical methods are being developed to use them in a way that does not pose a threat to the environment. The main aim of the research was to study the possibility of using lignin and plant biomass as biosorbents for the removal of zinc ions from aqueous solutions. The secondary aim was to build an optimal multilayer system made of biosorbents selected during the research in order to obtain the highest sorption efficiency and to determine the best conditions of the sorption process. The effectiveness of zinc ion sorption was assessed using an appropriate combination of sorbents such as lignin, oat bran, rice husk, chitosan, pectin, sodium alginate, pine bark, coconut fiber and activated carbon, selected on the basis of literature data and the preliminary results of tests carried out using FTIR and AAS. The main component of the sorption system was lignin separated from black liquor. Results indicate that the best Zn sorption system was based on coconut fiber, lignin, and pine bark, for which the maximum sorption efficiency was 95%. The research also showed that the increase in the process temperature, the mass of biosorbents used and the alkaline pH are the factors that increase the efficiency of the sorption. It can be concluded that lignin and plant biomass can be used as ecological sorbents of zinc ions from water solutions. They are safe for the environment, produced from renewable sources, and are by-products or waste materials, which is part of the sustainable development and circular economy currently promoted in the EU.

Opis:
We performed cathodoluminescence (CL) investigations of zinc oxide monolayers obtained by atomic layer deposition. Layers of different thickness were deposited on commercial GaN/sapphire templates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) system equipped with CL allows direct comparison of SEM images and CL maps, taken from exactly the same areas of samples. In addition to SEM and CL images, CL profiling was performed by collecting the CL spectra at different accelerating voltages. The CL profiling allows to distinguish the emissions from a surface and volume of samples. An inter-link between samples microstructure and emission properties is investigated. Shifts of emission bands, associated by us with the localization effects, are observed. CL investigations are supported by photoluminescence (PL) measurements, which are characterized by a higher spectral resolution. PL investigations allow determination of the origin of emission bands.

Opis:
The inhibitive action of the ethanol extract of oil from Picralima nitida leaf, towards acid corrosion of zinc, is tested using weight loss, and thermometry methods. It was found that the extract acted as a good corrosion inhibitor for zinc corrosion in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The inhibitive action of the extract was discussed in view of Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was revealed that the adsorption of the extract on zinc surface is governed by spontaneous process. The inhibition efficiency (IE) increases in line with corresponding increase in extract concentration. The temperature effect of the corrosion inhibition on the IE was studied. Revelation from the studies indicates that the presence of extract increases the activation energy of the corrosion reaction. Furthermore, from the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it was observed that Picralima nitida extract provides a good protection to zinc against pitting corrosion in chloride ion containing solutions.

Effective diffusion coefficients (De) for different heavy-metal salts: Cd, Pb, Zn in calcium alginate beads were determined. Their values depend on the metal type, anion from the metal salt, and the alginate content in the beads. The results of calculations indicate a decrease in the values of De, caused by an increase in the alginate content in the alginate sorbent beads. This is in agreement with the mechanism of the diffusion process taking place in porous carriers. Experimental data were found to be in good agreement with the mathematical model, as indicated by high values of the correlation coefficient.

Opis:
This work is focussed on the properties of organic coatings containing pigments whose surface was chemically coated with zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) layer. Four silicate types with different particle shapes were selected as the cores: diatomite, talc, kaolin and wollastonite. The untreated particles exhibit a barrier effect. The aim of this project was to apply the surface treatment approach with a view to enhancing not only the model paint films’ anticorrosion properties but also their resistance to physico- mechanical tests pursuant to ISO standards (cupping, bending, impact, adhesion). Other parameters examined included: particle size and morphology, density of the modified pigment, oil consumption, pH, conductivity, and electrochemical properties of the paint film. A solvent-based epoxy-ester resin was used as the binder and also served as the reference material. The pigment volume concentration (PVC) was 1% and 10%. During the last stage of the experiment, the paint films were exposed to a corrosive environment stimulating seaside conditions or conditions roads treated with rock salt. The accelerated cyclic corrosion test in a neutral salt mist atmosphere was conducted for 864 hours. The results served to ascertain a suitable environment for organic coatings.

Opis:
The main aim of this work was to compare different extraction agents in order to identify those which are able to give us most reliable data for assessment of soil zinc content and for prediction of possible contamination of crop. In order to compare several extraction methods and to identify the most suitable one for the zinc transfer into plant and to examine behaviour of high doses of a sludge heavily contaminated with zinc (almost 7 000 mg Zn kg–1), a two year pot experiment was established in vegetation hall in 2005. There were chosen five soils with different pH value (from extremely acidic to neutral) and planted with four crops – spinach, carrot, spring wheat and maize. But for control combination there were treatments with lower dose of sludge (equivalent of 5 Mg (tons) of dry matter per hectare) and high dose (equivalent of 25 Mg (tons) of dry matter per hectare for spinach and carrot and 50 Mg (tons) for wheat and maize). Following extraction agents were used for soil analyses – Aqua regia, 2 mol HNO3 dm–3, 0.43 mol HNO3 dm–3, Mehlich III, CAT, DTPA, CaCl2, and NH4NO3. Correlations of soil zinc content measured with particular extracting agents and zinc content in plants were calculated. The best correlations were found with quantity of Zn soluble in weakest extraction agents – CaCl2 and NH4NO3. They correlated with themselves and with zinc content in plans but not with other agents. The rest of agents mostly correlated among 0.43 mol HNO3 dm–3, Mehlich III, CAT and DTPA and between Aqua regia and 2 mol HNO3 dm–3. There were quite tight correlations between soil pH and zinc content in plants confirming that pH is a crucial factor for zinc soil mobility. It implies that knowledge of soil pH and (even) pseudo total zinc content can serve as a sufficient source of information about probable zinc status in the soil. Mehlich III, which is in the Czech Republic widely used for the Agrochemical Soil Testing (evaluation of P, K, Ca and Mg status of soil) can be used as a good screening tool (and perhaps for other microelements). Such use would provide a large scale of data without additional costs.
W badaniach użyto następujące ekstrahenty: woda królewska, 2 mol HNO3 dm-3, 0,43 mol HNO3 dm-3, Mehlich III, CAT, DTPA, CaCl2 i NH4NO3. Obliczono współczynniki korelacji pomiędzy ilością cynku ekstrahowanego z gleby przez poszczególne ekstrahenty a zawartością cynku w roślinach. Stwierdzono najsilniejszą korelację pomiędzy ilością cynku rozpuszczalnego w najsłabszym ekstrahentach - CaCl2 i NH4NO3.

There is an increasing trend in the modern construction industry to use nanomaterials, which allow to improve the performance of construction materials on the one hand, and to shape new properties on the other. This study presents the results of physicomechanical and antibacterial tests for cement composites modified with zinc nanooxide. The main aim of this study was to compare the structural and morphological properties of three selected commercial zinc nanooxides and to determine the influence of the above mentioned nanooxides on the physicomechanical properties of cement composites and the ability to inhibit the activity of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. It was shown that commercial nanooxides can significantly differ in terms of physicochemical properties, which depend on their production method. Two of them were characterized by high specific surface areas, which in turn translated into rheological properties of cement mortars. Nanooxides with higher specific surface areas tend to reduce the plasticity of the mortars. According to the literature data, all nanooxides caused a delay in cement binder setting by more than 100%. This resulted in a reduction of the early one-day flexural and compressive strength of the composite. In the later curing period, especially after 7 days of hardening, a significant acceleration of the hydration process was observed in composites with the addition of all nanooxides, which was confirmed by significant increases in mechanical parameters. Nevertheless, the tested nanooxides showed different sensitivity towards microorganisms, which was influenced by both the type of nanooxide and bacteria.

Aquatic ecosystems are a valuable part of natural environment. The increasing level of pollution in waters transforming biocoenoses and other adverse effects of the impact of toxic substances have contributed to the development of biological monitoring. The aim of the study was to determine the changes in contents of zinc and lead in bottom sediments and roots of aquatic plants: Phragmites australis and Acorus calamus in the river Narew. There were 14 points on the river, from where samples of bottom sediments and plant material were collected. The contents of lead and zinc were determined by means of flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry using Varian device. It was proven that bottom sediments were characterized by low contents of zinc and lead except from two sampling points: in Bondary and Narew. Achieved results of analyzes of plant material showed a slight exceeding in the case of lead. Spatial distribution of zinc and lead contents in examined roots of plants coincided with their contents in bottom sediments, which was also confirmed by statistical analysis. It was proven that aquatic plants had greater tendency for accumulation of metals than bottom sediments.

Municipal sewage sludge can be used in agriculture provided that the permissible levels of heavy metals are not exceeded in either the sewage sludge or in the top layer of soil to be amended by this substance, and that its application does not deteriorate the soil quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different forms of sewage sludge on the content of Cu and Zn in soil and in soil leachate. The study comprised 2 rotations (potato, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, winter wheat). Each series was composed of the following treatments: NPK, FYM, municipal sewage sludge composted with straw, dried and granulated municipal sewage. FYM and composted sewage were applied once in the rotation (under potato) in a dose of 10 Mg d.m. ha-1 and twice (under potato and under winter oilseed rape) in a dose of 5 Mg d.m. ha-1. In the other years (under spring barley and winter wheat), soil received only mineral fertilization. In order to evaluate the effect of the composts on the leaching of Cu and Zn from soil, a lysimetric experiment was conducted under controlled conditions. Before the experiment, the soil content of Cu was low (1.47 mg kg-1) and Zn was medium (10.11 mg kg-1). The content of copper in the composts ranged from 4.5 to 340.1 mg kg-1 d.m. and that of zinc was from 109.5 to 1310.1 mg kg-1 d.m. The composted sewage sludge significantly raised the soil content of available forms of Cu and Zn, but did not change the soil nutrient abundance class. Fertilization modified the content of the microelements in the soil leachate.

Opis:
Heavy metal is a type of metal that has a high density and high toxicity when consumed by living things, especially humans. To prevent the impact of environmental pollution, optimal handling of wastewater containing heavy metals is required, including the wastewater from laboratories. This research aimed to study the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and irradiation time on the reduction of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and Lead (Pb) heavy metals and their application to laboratory wastewater treatment. Among the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) methods, photocatalysis was chosen to reduce the level of Cu, Fe, and Pb heavy metals where zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as a photocatalyst and the sunlight as a light source. To determine the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and time on the reduction of heavy metal levels, firstly, this research used the synthetic wastewater containing Cu, Fe, or Pb heavy metals. On the basis of the experimental results, it is concluded that the pH value, catalyst dose, and time affect the photocatalytic process, decreasing the levels of Cu, Fe, and Pb metals. The optimum pH value obtained for Cu was at pH 7–8, for Fe it was at pH 6, and for Pb it was at pH 8; in turn, the metal removal percentages were 99.46, 99.91, and 99.70%, respectively. In the photocatalysis of synthetic wastewater, high removal percentage of more than 99% was achieved by using 0.1 g/L catalyst. The optimum decrease of metals occurred in the first 15 minutes of solar irradiation where the removal percentage was close to 100%. In this study, the application of ZnO photocatalyst under solar irradiation can reduce the heavy metals content in the laboratory wastewater by almost 100%, which meets the environmental quality standard for Cu, Fe, and Pb.

The Knudsen effusion method was used for measurements of mass loss rate of liquid Bi-In-Sn-Zn alloys, in the temperature range from 572 to 768 K. The studies were carried out for the alloys with the ratio of Bi:In:Sn equal 2:6:2, 2:2:6 and 8:1:1. The obtained results were used for the calculation of zinc vapour pressure over liquid Bi-In-Sn-Zn alloys and next the activity of zinc in the Bi-In-Sn-Zn liquid phase. It was found that for the investigated alloys the activity of zinc shows the considerable positive deviation from the Raoult's law.
Wyniki badań zostały wykorzystane do obliczenia równowagowej prężności par cynku nad ciekłymi stopami Bi-In-Sn-Zn, a następnie aktywności cynku.

Opis:
Zinc coatings obtained in electrolytic zinc plating differ in terms of corrosion resistance and their visual aspect depending on the brightener and basic components used. In order to achieve industrial properties and a desired appearance of the coatings, commercial organic additives made by Galvano-Partners and Dipsol were used. It has been shown that a greater effect on corrosion resistance can be achieved when the same passivation is applied to different zinc substrates. Electrolytically applied zinc from a zinc chloride solution and with thin-film passivation shows a higher polarization resistance after 24 h compared to a coating obtained using two technologies utilizing (alkaline) baths based on sodium zincate, despite having the same conversion coating. In the aspect of one electrolytic zinc coating with different chromate coatings, disproportions between the successive conversion technologies are noted in the polarization resistance. Potentiodynamic curves describing a zinc coating with different chromate layers applied indicate a major variation in the barrier properties of the studied material.

Acid rain formed first of all from sulphur oxide emitted by natural and anthropogenic sources, may change the biological equilibrium and the metal stoppage in the soil. The model experiments were performed to determine the influence of acid rain on zinc bond with humic acid (HA). The samples were prepared in glass columns with quartz sand and overlaid HA or HA+65Zn radioisotope that simulates natural conditions. Then, solutions of H2SO4 were introduced into the sand HA layer. Zinc was washed with diluted (10 4 10 3 M) sulphuric acid as the simulation of acid rain. The recovery of injected radiotracer ions in eluates was found to depend on pH of simulated acid rain. The results help to evaluate the migration behaviour of zinc in the presence of HA and H2SO4. The model studies illustrate the considerable influence of sulphuric acid on chemical degradation of HA.

Zinc-65 was produced in the Nuclear Research Center for Agriculture and Medicine (NRCAM) by the bombardment of natural copper targets with 30 MeV protons via the 65Cu(p,n)65Zn nuclear reaction. Natural copper was used instead of enriched 65Cu because of the quick decay of undesired radioisotopes. It was also more desirable for cost effectiveness. Cross-section calculations were performed by ALICE nuclear code and the results were compared with the experimental data given in the literature, which showed good agreement. A 160 mi m copper layer target was bombarded with a 150 miA current of 30 MeV protons for 20 min, which resulted in 170 MBq activity of 65Zn product. The yield was 3.4 MBq/miAh. The concentration of the product was 6.8 MBq/ml. Radiochemical separation was carried out by anion exchange chromatography with the yield of about 98%. Quality control of the final product showed a radionuclide purity of more than 98% and no traces of possible impurities (copper) were detected by a colorimetric method with a 1 ppm detection limit using dithizone as the reagent. The materials used for targetry and chemical separation were quite cost-effective.

The metal industry area in Zielona Góra was tested, which has been functioning continuously since 1876. In the samples taken in the years 2009 and 2010 the chemical and physico-chemical properties of the soils were identified. Zinc was found in amounts between 321–3290 mg ˙ kg–1, with an average of 1340 mg ˙ kg–1. It clearly shows an anthropogenic rise in comparison to the other parts of the urban area under research – from 11 to 110 times. These values are also higher in comparison to the average content of zinc found in soils in Poland – 30 mg ˙ kg–1. Different contents of zinc were found on the premises of the plant, which depended on the location of a particular place in the relation to the production halls and other elements of the plant’s infrastructure.

Opis:
Zinc is a naturally wide spread element, which generally finds its use in industry but also in numerous pharmaceutical, cosmetic and stomatology materials. Taking into consideration its frequent occurrence (in almost all biological materials) and its low quantities, a good choice of analytical method for zinc assay is a necessity. Apart from spectrophotometric methods – especially AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry) which is a method of choice for zinc determination, also electroanalytical methods are used. Most frequently ASV (Anodic Stripping Voltammetry) or Polarography is applied. Despite the need of samples digestion electrochemical methods offer a price convenient method for determination of zinc, even in trace amounts (ppt – parts per trillion). Currently there is also new information about ion selective electrodes suitable for zinc assay.

The article presents the results of research which describes antagonism between Pb-Zn in selected plant species from the area of Czestochowa – Mirow district (north-western part of the Czestochowa Upland). There were analyzed changes in the ratio of Pb/Zn in different organs of the tested plants as a function of the Zn content changes. The content of metals in the plants and the soil was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry AAS. In all organs of the plants there was observed antagonistic decrease of Pb uptake and accumulation, resulting from the increase in the concentration Zn. Antagonism between Zn and Pb in roots of the tested plants occurred at Zn content of 200–600 μg/g. In turn, antagonism in stems and flowers occurred at lower contents of zinc (100–180 μg/g). In leaves, antagonism between Pb and Zn occurred when Zn was present at the level of 300–800 μg/g. Ex definition of the analyses confirm the presence of antagonism of lead with regard to high levels of Zn. The study also confirmed that the degree of antagonism depends on the plant species.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań opisujące występowanie antagonizmu pomiędzy Pb-Zn w wybranych gatunkach roślin z terenu Częstochowy – dzielnica Mirów (północno-zachodnia część Wyżyny Częstochowskiej). Analizowano zmiany ilorazu zawartości Pb/Zn w poszczególnych organach badanych roślin jako funkcję zmian zawartości Zn. Zawartość metali w roślinach i w glebie została określona metodą atomowej spektrofotometrii absorpcyjnej AAS. We wszystkich organach roślin obserwowano antagonistyczny spadek pobierania i kumulacji Pb, będący skutkiem wzrostu koncentracji Zn.

Pylaisia polyantha moss growing near intensive traffic in Geležinis Vilkas street at Vingis Park (Vilnius) was selected as an indicator of environmental pollution. Two models were applied for the study: the Gaussian plume model – for zinc emission from automobiles calculation and mathematical model – for recalculating the zinc emission from transport to zinc concentration in moss. Moss samples were collected during spring, summer and autumn. There were no significant changes in Zn concentrations between these periods. Zn emission dispersion from pollution source was calculated only for one vehicle, in order to reach relationships between environmental conditions and dispersion of Zn emission from vehicle exhaust fumes pipe. It was detected that the concentration of Zn tends to decrease with the distance from the pollution source. It was observed that there was a strong relationship between wind speed and Zn concentration – the slower the wind speed, the higher concentration of zinc in moss.

Recovery and separation of cobalt and manganese from one of zinc plant residues (ZPR), namely hot filter cake (HFC) using a hydrometallurgical process was studied. The process is carried out in four steps as follows: (1) washing zinc, (2) reductive leaching with hydrogen peroxide, (3) cadmium cementation with zinc powder and (4) separation of cobalt from manganese with beta naphthol. In this research, the separation between manganese and cobalt from the HFC using N-N reagent was investigated. The influence of several parameters on the course of the reaction such as N-N quantity, pH, temperature and reaction time was also examined. The optimum separation conditions were found to be N-N quantity: 8 times of stoichiometric value, time: 30 min, temperature: 25 °C and pH = 1.5. Using the optimized conditions, the cobalt and manganese precipitation was nearly 99% and 0%, respectively. A kinetic study of manganese precipitation through N-N reagent has been carried out to assess the effect of kinetics parameters. The data obtained for the leaching kinetics indicated that the precipitation of manganese is an ash diffusion controlled reaction and the reaction activation energy is equal to 1.4kJ/mol.

The effect of cationic, anionic and nonionic surface active additives, organic compounds and polymers on the electrodeposition of Zn-Mo coatings on steel substrate and detailed characterization in chosen optimal conditions was studied. The influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) various concentration, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), triton X-100, d-sorbitol, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), thiourea and disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) on the electrodeposition process was examined. The composition of deposits was defined by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF). Results has shown that the current efficiency of the electrodeposition of Zn-Mo coatings is 71.4%, 70.7%, 66.7% for 1.5 g/dm3 PEG 20000, 0.1 g/dm3 Triton X-100 and 0.75 M D-sorbitol respectively. The surface topography and roughness of selected coatings on steel was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The attendance of D-sorbitol of 0.75 M in the solution cause clear reduction of grain size and the value of roughness parameter (Ra) in relation to SDS, PEG, Triton X-100 and the sample prepared without the additives. The morphology of electrodeposited layers was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of selected additives to the electrolytic bath results in the formation of smoother, brighter and more compact Zn-Mo coatings in comparison to layers obtained from similar electrolytes but without the addition of surfactants. The optimal concentration of the most effective additives such as PEG 20000, Triton X-100 and D-sorbitol is 1.5 g/dm3, 0.1 g/dm3, 0.75 M respectively.

Abrasive blasting is one of the methods of surface working before hot-dip zinc-coating. It allows not only to remove products of corrosion from the surface, but it also affects the quality of the zinc coating applied later, thereby affecting wettability of surface being zinc-coated. The surface working can be done with different types of abrasive material. The paper presents an effect of the method of abrasive blasting on wetting the surface of steel sheets by liquid zinc. Steels sheets following blasting with Al2O3 of different granularity and shot peening were examined. The worst wetting was recorded for a sample following shot peening - the results are below those for the reference test conducted for a sample not previously subjected to any treatment. Samples following abrasive blasting have similar parameters, regardless of the size of grain used for the treatment.
