In 2006, ca. 60 individuals of Gentiana cruciata were found in the Strzyżowskie Foothills. Until recently, only one locality of the species in the area has been reported from Kołaczyce in the Wisłoka River valley by Knapp in the 19th century. The new locality is situated in the Wielopolka River valley on an S-SW-W slope with varied inclination. In total, 16 phytosociological relevés were taken with the use of the Braun-Blanquet method in patches comprising Gentiana cruciata. The patches were characterised by high proportions of species from the classes Molinio-Arrhenathereta, Festuco-Brometea, and Trifolio-Geranietea. Given the dominance of meadow species, the community was classified as a thermophilic fresh meadow from the alliance Arrhenatherion. An upward trend was noted in the analysed population, as the number of the individuals increased to ca. 160 in 2014

Opis:
Our paper has two major aims. First of all, we would like to emphasize the role of the National Census in developing social policy both as an academic discipline and as practice. Despite unquestionable value and usefulness of the data provided by the National Census we would also like to point out the traps and obstacles in reading and understanding some data. Secondly, we will analyze data obtained from the National Census 2002 regarding housing issues. Therefore, we will illustrate and compare the recent data with data taken from other studies in the past, trying to draw conclusions which will demonstrate housing problems in a time perspective in modern Poland.
Tekst ma dwa zasadnicze cele. Po pierwsze chcemy uwypuklić rolę spisów powszechnych dla polityki społecznej rozumianej zarówno jako działalność naukową, jak i w wymiarze praktycznych działań. Oprócz niewątpliwej wartości i społeczno-naukowej użyteczności danych spisowych na gruncie polityki społecznej, zwracamy także uwagę na niebezpieczeństwa w odczytywaniu niektórych danych spisowych, a przez to na ich niedoskonałości. Po drugie analizujemy dokonania narodowego spisu powszechnego z 2002 roku w kontekście wybranej przez nas doniosłej sfery polityki społecznej - kwestii mieszkaniowej. W tym zakresie konfrontujemy dane spisowe z 2002 roku z rysującymi się tendencjami szacowanymi na podstawie wcześniej realizowanych mniejszych badań, co pozwala nam określić aktualne problemy mieszkaniowe w Polsce.

Introduction: So far, very little data on pediatric obesity has been published in Poland, although the problem seems to be growing.Objective: To investigate present prevalence of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren using CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention) criteria in Krakow and to compare how it has changed between the years 2001 and 2013. Our aim was to establish the magnitude of this rising problem within the last decade.Materials and methods: The study was conducted in two phases. In 2001, height and weight of the group of schoolchildren were obtained. Twelve years later, children in the same age, attending the same schools, were measured and weighed. Using the collected data, BMI (kg/m2) was calculated in order to acquire BMI percentile. BMI cutoffs referential for Polish population were used.Results: Using the CDC criteria to diagnose children as obese or overweight, the authors determined that the prevalence of overweight, including obesity was 10.8% in 2001 and changed to 15.1% in 2013 (p=0.0054). The percentage of obese children increased from 2.0% to 4.8% (p=0.0012). The occurrence of overweight and obesity has increased among girls (p=0.0025; p=0.0112 respectively) while among the group of boys, it did not change. The factors associated with excess weight were: male sex (OR=1.48; 95%CI=1.13-1.95) and second phase of the study (OR= 1.48; 95%CI=1.13-1.95).Conclusion: Our study indicated that the prevalence of obesity and overweight among adolescents in Krakow rose within the last decade. The rising problem affected females more than males. Despite that, excess weight is still more frequent among males than females.

Artykuł porusza aktualny problem weryfikacji dotychczasowego podziału fizycznogeograficznego Polski (mikroregionalizacja) wybranych mezoregionów województwa śląskiego. Podejmowane próby wykonywania mikroregionalizacji są zawiązane z trwającymi pracami nad przygotowaniem audytów krajobrazowych województw. Autorzy diagnozują powody niedoskonałości dotychczasowej klasyfikacji jednostek fizycznogeograficznych, proponując kryteria i procedurę mikroregionalizacji. Próbą weryfikacji poprawności dotychczasowego podziału fizycznogeograficznego oraz testowaniem zaproponowanej metody jest wydzielenie mikroregionów w obrębie czterech wybranych mezoregionów (Obniżenie Górnej Warty, Wyżyna Częstochowska, Wyżyna Katowicka i Płaskowyż Rybnicki). Przedstawione wyniki ujawniają nieprecyzyjność dotychczasowego podziału regionalnego Polski i trudności interpretacyjne procesu mikroregionalizacji.
This paper focuses on the current problem of revision and verification of the existing physicogeographical division of Poland through microregionalization of selected mesoregions of the Silesian Voivodship. Attempts made to carry out the microregionalization are related to the ongoing work on the preparation of landscape audits of voivodships. The authors diagnose the reasons behind the imperfections of the existing classification of the physicogeographical units while proposing the criteria and procedure for the microregionalization. Identifying microregions within four selected mesoregions (the Upper Warta Depression, Częstochowa Upland, Katowice Upland and Rybnik Plateau) is an attempt at verifying the accuracy of the existing physicogeographical division and a test of the proposed method The results reveal the vagueness of Poland's existing regional division and difficulties with interpretation of the microregionalization process.

Diet is a major environmental factor which maintains metabolic balance and body homeostasis. The aim of the study was to present the latest reports on the biological activity of the food compounds in a critical review. It has been shown that bioactive substances supplied with food e.g. polyphenols, flavonoids or phenolic acids exhibit immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory fun-ctions. What is more, they favourably downregulate major oncogenes and enhance suppressors’ expression. Studies show that these substances can be an important component of cancer prevention and treatment. However, there are micronutrients like iron or copper which elevated levels in cancer cells occurs and should be considered as a therapeutic targets.

Badano wpływ wymiany tłuszczu zwierzęcego tłuszczem roślinnym Akoroma OM i preparatem błonnika pszennego Vitacel WF 400 LC na jakość drobno rozdrobnionych farszów mięsnych i wyprodukowanych z nich kiełbas. Tłuszcz zwierzęcy wymieniano Akoromą OM w ilości 20 % (w postaci stałej i w postaci emulsji) z dodatkiem aromatu mięsa. W farszach oznaczono lepkość pozorną, ilość wycieku cieplnego i zawartość wody wolnej. W wyprodukowanych kiełbasach oznaczono podstawowy skład chemiczny (białko, tłuszcz, woda) i poddano je sensorycznej ocenie pożądalności. Najlepsze jakościowo kiełbasy uzyskano z farszu wyprodukowanego z wymianą tłuszczu zwierzęcego tłuszczem roślinnym w postaci emulsji i z dodatkiem aromatu mięsa.
Under the study presented, the effect was investigated of replacing animal fat with the “Akoroma OM” vegetable fat and with „Vitacel WF 400 LC” wheat fibre on the quality of finely comminuted meat batters and sausages manufactured from them. The amount of 20% of fat was replaced with a vegetable fat (both in the solid state and the emulsion form) with the addition of pork meat aroma. In the batters, the apparent viscosity, drip loss, and free water content were determined. The basic chemical composition of the manufactured sausages was analyzed (protein, fat, water), and their general desirability was sensorily assessed. The best quality sausages were obtained from the batters produced using, instead of animal fat, vegetable fat in the form of emulsion and the addition of pork meat aroma.

The work presents results of solution combustion method utilization for yttria (Y2O3) nanopowder fabrication. Experiments were carried out with four different reducing agents: urea, glycine, citric acid and malonic acid added in stoichiometric ratio. The reactions were investigated using simultaneous DSC/DTA thermal analysis. After synthesis the reaction products were calcined at temperature range of 800-1100°C and analyzed in terms of particle size, specific surface area and morphology. Best results were obtained for nanoyttria powder produced from glycine. After calcination at temperature of 1100°C the powder exhibits in a form of nanometric, globular particles of diameter <100 nm, according to SEM analysis. The dBET for thus obtained powder is 104 nm, however the powder is agglomerated as the particle size measured by dynamic light scattering analysis is 1190 nm (dV50).

To be effective, probiotic bacteria must exhibit a number of functional characteristics, including the resistance to gastric acidity and the ability to adhere to the intestinal epithelium. In this study, we examined in vitro the viability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) combination after exposure to low pH, and the adhesion of LAB to Caco-2 cells during coincubation of 9 bacterial strains. To test bacterial viability, 6 commercially available products were incubated in 0.1 N HCl at pH 1.2 for 60 min. The greatest growth inhibition was noted for the non-capsulated product containing the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain (log reduction of CFU = 6.4), and the best survival observed for the product containing 9 bacterial strains, equipped with a modern capsule made according to the Multi-Resistant Encapsulation technology (log reduction of CFU = 0.1). In the adhesion experiment, the combination of 9 bacterial strains was added to 17-day-old Caco-2 cell culture for 90 min. The greatest efficiency of adhesion was observed for the inoculum containing 5.5 × 108 CFU/mL/9.6 cm2 of Caco-2 and the dose of probiotic bacteria of 190 cells per one Caco-2 cell. As a result, approximately 157 bacterial cells adhered to one Caco-2 cell. The results indicate that the combination of 9 bacterial strains in the examined product is characterized as highly adhesive.

Opis:
Wyznaczono dyspersję osiową dla jednofazowego przepływu cieczy (wody i 45% roztworu gliceryny) przez złoże metalowych i ceramicznych pian stałych. Otrzymane wyniki zostały porównane z wartościami właściwymi dla złoża kulek. Określono wpływ lepkości cieczy na mierzony parametr. Dodatkowo wyznaczono również opory przepływu.
Metal and ceramic solid foams were examined to determine axial dispersion for liquids (water and 45% glycerol solution) single phase flow; the results obtained for the packed bed of spheres were used for comparison. The influence of the liquid viscosity on axial dispersion was tested. Moreover, flow resistance was also measured.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of environmental pollution and parental tobacco smoking on the occurrence of pseudocroup in children. Material and methods: A questionnaire-study was performed in 345 children with pseudocroup admitted to the ENT Dept between 1997–2007. 116 children had smoking and 229 had non-smoking parents. Both groups were compared with respect to environmental pollution (urban, rural), parents’ level of education, household crowding and breast feeding period. The prevalence of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and the presence of allergy were also anlaysed. The results were compared to those performed in the ENT Dept in 1977 -1986. Results: In the group of rural children, 21 were children with pseudocroup from smoking parents and 36 children of nonsmoking parents. Among children living in the urban areas there were 95 from smoking parents and 193 from non-smoking parents. Both non-smoking parents presented a large group of people with a higher level of education, and in the smoking families both parents presented a lower level of education. Analysis of the breast feeding period revealed that it was the longest (up to 9 months) in non-smoking mothers – 21% of the group, and only in 4.3% of smoking mothers.

Introduction: School anxiety has become a common problem in children and adolescents. Despite numerous studies, it is difficult to definitely identify the cause of neurotic disorders in school-age children. The objective of the presented study was to assess the prevalence of neurotic disorders in rural schoolchildren and the role of physical activity as a method to support their treatment. Material and methods: The study consisted of 123 girls and 117 boys living in rural areas of Wielkopolska. A questionnaire was provided evaluating family status, family relationships, school situation, somatic symptoms related to being at school, and the frequency of physical activity. Results: It was found that over the 50% of children considered the relations with siblings as correct, but also acknowledged that there were a conflict situations in their relationship. Nearly 25% of children indicated an emotional irrelevance with their parents. About 20% of the young people did not like going to school or were afraid to stay there. Over the 50% of children declared somato-emotional problems associated with the being at school. The symptoms of neurotic disorders were more strongly expressed and more common in girls. Analysis of physical activity indicated that only a small group of young people practiced sport regularly, and an even smaller percentage of children exercised with their parents and/or peers. Conclusions: The development of somatic and emotional disturbances in children may be associated with irregular family and school relationships and low physical activity. It was found that gender had a significant influence on most of the studied parameters.
