    Opis:
    In this paper the attempt has been made to determine the proportion of sapwood and heartwood in pruned and non−pruned stems of Scots pine growing in the fresh mixed coniferous forest. Research results have shown that the proportion of heartwood in pruned pine stems was higher than in non−pruned ones. This was particularly noticeable after 24 years from the treatment while after 51 years this regularity was less distinct.

    Opis:
    W okresie zimowym i wczesno-wiosennym jelenie zdzierają siekaczami żuchwy korę z pni drzew, która służy im jako pokarm. Jest to kora „żywa”, to znaczy cienka, nie pokryta jeszcze warstwą korowiny. Obok kory, wykorzystywane są także pędy. Te dwa składniki pokarmowe stanowią znaczną część całkowitego pokarmu jeleni. Zjawisko zdzierania kory przez zwierzynę nazywane jest spałowaniem. Spałowanie jest szkodliwe dla produkcji surowca drzewnego, natomiast w życiu zwierzyny odgrywa pożyteczną rolę, ponieważ jest sposobem zdobywania pokarmu. Z tych względów spałowaniem zainteresowani są zarówno hodowcy lasu, jak i hodowcy zwierzyny. Oczywiście, każda grupa z innego powodu. Hodowców zwierzyny interesuje jakość pokarmowa kory, w tym także zawartość w niej mikroelementów i metali ciężkich. W prezentowanej pracy przedstawiano wyniki badań zawartości następujących pierwiastków: mikroelementy - Mn, Zu, Fe, Cu oraz metale ciężkie - Pb, Ni i Cr.
    In winter and free spring season red deer are tearing with incisives of mandible the live bark from trees for feeding purposes. The „living” bark is thin not and yet not covered by the rhytidome layers. Besides the bark, also the shoots are used. This two components are a considerable part of whole deer forage diet in this period of year. The phenomenon of tearing out the bark is known in forest literature as the tapping. Tapping is noxious to wood raw material production, while it is very useful in the game life as a way of feed achievement. Therefore, in this problem are concerned either, the forest breeders and gamekeepers. The gamekeepers are interested in quality of bark forage and in the contents of microelements in it. In presented paper the results of study on following microelement contents were given: Mn, Zn, Fe, Cu and heavy metals: Pb, Ni and Cr. The experiments carried insbled to formulate the following conclusions: The content of metals in thin live Scots pine bark, eaten by red deer, is diminishing in following rank: Mn > Pb > Zn > Fe > Cu > Ni > Cr. The contents of these elements in Scots pine bark were not correlated with tapping by red deer. Individual variability in contents of studied elements was very vide. In course of Cu contents seasons (from winter to spring) the in pine bark systematically increased while the Pb, Zn, Fe - systematically decreased; Cu and Cr contents at first increased then decreased. Changes in Ni concentration were not determined.

    The paper presents variability in morphological traits of trees in mature Scots pine stands exposed to wind. The analysed parameters included breast height diameter, tree height and length, diameter, lateral area and crown base area. Except for the crown base area and crown diameter, values of the other traits increased with an increase in the distance from the edge of the stand. Crown diameter in trees with average exposure to wind was smaller than diameters of trees growing on the edge of the stand (strong exposure) and within the stand (weak exposure).

    Opis:
    Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że średnie zawartości poszczególnych mikroelementów w soku brzozowym są następujące (mg·dm⁻³): manganu - 10,9, żelaza - 1,01, cynku - 3,06 i miedzi 0,047. Obraz przebiegu zmian przedstawiono na wykresach z których wynika, że w okresie sączenia drzew (09.03-07.04) przebieg zmian zawartości mikroelementów, kształtował się odmiennie. W przypadku manganu zmiany przebiegały zgodnie z krzywą regresji wielomianowej trzeciego stopnia, cynku i miedzi zgodnie z krzywymi regresji wielomianowej drugiego stopnia, natomiast zmiany zawartości żelaza nie dały się opisać żadną dowolną krzywą. Otrzymane wyniki badań zawartości mikroelementów są zbliżone do tych jakie uzyskali autorzy cytowanych prac.
    The studies showed, that the mean contents of particular microelements in birch tree juice were as follows (mg·dm⁻³): manganese - 10.9, iron - 1.01, zinc 3.06 and copper 0.047. The courses of changes were presented on diagrams. The diagrams enabled to conclude that in the period of draining trees (09.03-07.04) the course of changes in microelement contents varied. In case of manganese the changes took place according to the multinomial regression curve of the third degree, while at zinc and copper according to the multinomial regression curves of the second degree: changes of iron content could not be described by any curve. Obtained results regarding microelements contents were similar to the data given in references.

    The analysis was conducted on the wood of two 100−year−old oak species that grew in the riparian forest conditions. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of tree species on conventional wood density, compressive strength along the grain with a moisture content of 12% and above 30% and desorption strengthening. It was found that wood of both oak species differed in density, compressive strength along the grain and desorption strengthening. These differences should be taken into account in the processing and use of timber harvested in the prescribed cuts.

    The study presents the results of the MANOVA investigation on single tree growth space. The study included 48 larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in the fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw) and fresh mixed broadleaved (LMśw) forest habitats. The space occupied by a single tree was calculated for each larch tree as the volume of a cylinder with a height equal to the height of a tree, while the base area was determined from the average crown radius. Basic statistical characteristics were established. The MANOVA was performed to assess the statistical significance of the impact of forest habitat type, age and biosocial position of trees in a stand. A similar analysis was done for two basic measurement characteristics of trees – diameter at breast height and height.

    The study attempts to assess whether degree of cellulose crystallinity in oak and European larch wood determined with specific technique of X−ray shows a similar trend as the change of early− and latewood ratio in annual rings and to verify the accuracy of the graphical methods used to establish the areas of juvenile and mature wood in stems of forest trees. The resulting trends of changes in the cellulose crystallinity within the stems have confirmed the validity of methods of determining the areas of juvenile and mature wood based on measurements of macroscopic elements of wood. In addition to such utility knowledge of the degree of cellulose crystallinity can also be useful in assessing the quality of wood tissue in the context of ageing and an important factor in determining the optimal rotation age of forest trees.

    The aim of the study was to collect and present in a synthetic way the current state of knowledge on wood quality and factors affecting its fluctuations. Selected research papers presented in this study refer to Scots pine – the most important forest−forming species both in Poland and our part of Europe. Presented relationships between selected wood properties and characteristics of trees on the one hand and methods adopted in the management policy indicate that it is possible to modify wood quality on standing trees. In the future the utilization of these properties in forest economy is probably going to facilitate meeting the growing requirements of the wood market, especially in case of valuable assortments.

    In the study attempts have been made to compare the conducting area (Pp) values in European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) having different biosocial positions in the stands of younger age classes. The Pp value increases with age and transfer of trees to a higher biosocial class in a stand. Also, the Pps index describing average earlywood conducting area within individual tree−ring was calculated. Both Pp and Pps appear to be the values describing relationships between the conducting area and assimilation−transpiration area more precisely than the entire sapwood area.

    The aim of the study was to determine whether there is a correlation between breast height diameter, tree height and stem total volume of Scots pines, on the one hand, and volume and proportion of juvenile wood, on the other. The investigations comprised pure pine stands of the IInd, IIIrd, IVth and Vth age classes developed in conditions of fresh mixed coniferous forest. A distinct curvilinear correlation was found between volume and proportion of juvenile wood in tree stems and breast height diameter, height and stem total volume. Because of high values of determination coefficients (R2), which characterised the above-mentioned correlations, it seems appropriate to use these regularities to assess the quality of the timber raw material regarding the proportions of its volume and juvenile wood in stems of Scots pine trees.

    The study makes an attempt to analyse the width of annual rings, the width of the latewood zone and the proportion of the latewood within juvenile wood along trunks of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees and to verify the hypothesis about the heterogeneous properties of juvenile wood in a single trunk. It was found that the above-mentioned macrostructural elements of wood structure showed a curvilinear correlation with the height of measurement points along the tree trunk. As the distance from the base of trunk increased, the width of the annual ring and the width of the latewood zone decreased, while the proportion of the latewood increased. These types of changes can affect positively physical and mechanical properties of wood tissue. It can be assumed that there is a mechanism which modifies properties of juvenile wood causing axial diversification of the analysed type of wood tissue. It is probable that axial heterogeneity results in advantageous changes in the mechanics of the tree trunk.

    Analyses were conducted on wood from twelve Scots pines from northern Poland, aged 102 to 110 years, growing on former farmland and on forest grounds. The study was an attempt to determine basic density of wood, compressive strength along the grain, bending strength of absolutely dry wood and wood with moisture content above saturation point. Desorption strengthening was determined for analyzed strength properties of wood. Wood properties were determined in terms of juvenile and mature wood zones. Generally pines growing on former farmlands were characterized by wood with higher density and slightly lower strength than pines growing on typical forest soils. Conducted investigations indicate varied structure and properties of wood tissue formed in pines growing on former farmlands, which is different from that of typical forest soils.

    Opis:
    The study presents the relationships between larch slenderness and age, breast height diameter, height, crown width, crown projection area, crown length and habitat type. The study comprised larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw), fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) and fresh deciduous (Lśw) forest habitats. The slenderness of each larch was calculated as the ratio of tree height to breast height diameter. The crown projection area was calculated as a circle with a radius equal to the average radius of the crown. The average crown radius was established after its projection in the four main geographical directions. The crown length was calculated as the difference between the height of a tree and the height of crown location. Also an attempt was made to describe tree slenderness using multiple regression equations.

    The study presents the results of MANOVA of tree slenderness. The study material comprised 72 larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw), fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) and fresh deciduous (Lśw) forest habitats. The slenderness of each larch tree was calculated as the ratio of tree height [m] to breast height diameter [cm]. Basic statistical characteristics were also established. A three−way analysis of variance was performed assessing the statistical significance of the impact of forest habitat type, age and biosocial position of trees in the stand. A similar analysis was done for two basic measurement characteristics of trees – breast height diameter and height.

    Opis:
    Investigations were conducted on 48 Scots pines coming from 16 natural sites in northern Poland. This study was an attempt to analyse relationships between crown parameters of model trees and the stem conduction area in terms of site conditions, age and social diversification of the stand. Analyses showed that there is a strong dependency between crown volume and the volume and area of the xylem (sapwood) responsible for the conduction of water with minerals. Indexes of crown transpiration productivity analysed in the study seem to reflect reliably relations found in the forest phytocenoses and are confirmed in physiological dependencies between the transpiration apparatus, the vascular zone and tree height determined by the occupied social class in the forest community. It may be assumed that sapwood area (physiologically active) is characterised by the variable hydraulic conductivity, probably being the function of age and specific individual characters. In order to maintain the flow of transpiration, optimal for growth conditions, a tree as every living organism exhibits a certain adaptation ability, which makes it possible to meet the above conditions and cope with competition in the community.

    Paper identifies value and variability of slenderness of pedunculate oak stems in age range from 10 to 140 years describing slenderness of tree stems simultaneously using linear and multiplies regression. Strength of the connections between slenderness and selected dendrometrical traits was also defined. Dependence of the slenderness was investigated with respect to height, breast height diameter, and 10−years increment of breast height diameter, volume and 10−years volume increment in specific years of tree life. The slenderness of trees decreases with the growth of breast height diameter, breast height diameter increment, volume and volume increment. In case of height opposite tendency was observed. Dependence of slenderness on breast height diameter, height and age was analysed for all trees altogether as well. Slenderness was described additionally with linear and multivariate empirical equations.

    Opis:
    Knots are remnants of branches left on the stem or visible in the side of the tree. They affect wood quality and its final utilisation. The rate of self−pruning depends on many factors, including tree species. The balance of assimilation and disassimilation to a considerable degree determines natural clearance of branches. The aim of the study was to determine the dynamics of natural clearance of branches in European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) varying in breast height diameter and height. Analyses were conducted in stands of different age classes. After mean sample trees were felled (selected according to Urich I) macroscopic observations were conducted, classifying individual zones of the stem into separate classes according to the rate of self−pruning. Analysed traits were found to vary considerably. A strong relationship was shown between breast height diameter, tree height and the length of the knot−free zone. The crown of the analysed forest−forming species retains similar relative length throughout the life of a tree.
