Opis:
As the area of the future Bełchatów Industrial Region there has been accepted in this article a region encompassing the town of Bełchatów and 16 rural administrative communes in the southern part of the Piotrkow Administrative Province with a total area of 166,400 hectares. The years 1973-1981 were for this hitherto typically agricultural region a period of dynamic transformations accompanying construction of a huge power complex. During this period, a total of 6,200 ha of arable land and 800 ha of forests wet e removed from cultivation, with a much bigger drop in agricultural lands recorded in the nonsocialized sector being dominant on this area. There was also observed out flow of a big number of people, mainly young people, from agriculture. Many farms without successors were taken over by the state in exchange for retiremeng benefits. Apperance of a depression crater and changes in water conditions in soils led to changes in total area and previous structure of agricultura l lands. This concerned mainly permanent grasslands most sensitive to changes in water conditions. The scale of changes is not verv big as yet. It is dependent upon local environmental conditions and distance from the industrial centre. The biggest changes in land use forms occured in rural administrative comnunes of Kleszczów, Kamieńsk and Kluki, as well as in the town and commune of Bełchatów, and especially in villages situated between the town of Bełchatów and the area of the open pit mine and the power station. It is an effect of cumulated influence of a depression crater this area and of expanding urban market of Bełchatów exerting an increasingly stronger influence (fig. 1).

Opis:
The discussed area of Central Poland occupies 37,776,6 km2, i. e. 12,1 per cent of the total area of Poland. From the adr ministrative division point of view it encompasses administrative provinces of Kalisz, Konin, Łódź., Płock, Piotrków, Sieradz, Skierniewice, and Włocławek. Statistical analyses were based on the agricultural census from 1975. A favourable natural feature affecting the agriculture is the sculpture of the earth's surface being characterized with absence of major changes of level although it is scenically diversified by a quaternary glacier and a long vegetation period (from 209 to 216 days) with a favourable distribution of temperatures. The soil conditions are less favourable (predominance of not very fertile soils - 3rd and 4th bonitation class) similarly to precipitation (550 mm annually). The area under survey is characterized by a high percentage of land being used for agricultural purposes (arable land accounts for 72 per cent of total area), which exerts an influence on directions of land utilization (see table 3). The article discusees spatial distribution and intensity of basic crops in private farms, which are a predominant form of land ownership here. Applying B. Kopeć’s method there were determined 16 trends in utilization of arable land (grouped into 9 types) on the basis of the crops structure. This allowed to assess utilization of arable land and perform its cartographic interpretation (tabl. 4, Fig. 4).

Opis:
The article discusses the present situation and prospects for development of dairy production in Central . Poland. This region encompasses 8 administrative provinces, and it is an agricultural region boasting a higher level of milt -cattle breeding and milk production than the national average. Despite difficulties prevailing in agricultural production at the present time the overall production of milk was growing in the period under survey reaching the volume of 2.7 billion litre in 1979. About 65 per cent of the overall production finds its way to over HO dairy factories through an effective network of purchasing points, where it is further processed or sent out to other regions of the country suffering from milk deficit. The dairy industry in Central Poland supplies a wide assortment of dairy products to the market to the tune of over 6 billion zloty i.e. ca. 13 per cent of the national market supply. However, processing of milk constitutes the weakest link in dairy production in this region and it calls for expansion of processing capacities. It refers mainly to these administrative provinces where we can observe today a surplus of milk supply over possibilities of processing it. These provinces include: Sieradz, Piotrków and Kalisz. In the next ten years is should be expected that consumption ol milk products will grow. It is predicted that the average per capita annual consumption (measured according to raw material i.e. milk) will reach about 540 litre per person (at present It amounts to 420 litre. This poses a task before the daire industry of expanding production of milk, further increasing the share of centralized purchasing in production, and increasing processing capacities of dairy co-operatives. While accomplishing these taske it is necessary to seek such methods and ways which involve the lowest financial outlays.

The article contains an assessment of the raw material base and processing capacities of the dairy industry in Skierniewice province from the viewpoint of its further development. The dairy industry plays an increasingly more important role in nutrition of the population both in this province and in the urbanized adjoining provinces. Its specific location between the two biggest agglomerations in Poland has not changed the traditionally agricultural character of this province. It’s reflected among others in the structure of land utilization and in the employment structure. In milk production this province scores higher indices than the national average despite relatively small acreage of meadows and pasture lands. As a result of a difficult fodder situation in the country, the stock of cattle has been subject to some fluctuations in recent years, which, however, did not exert any major Influence on the level of milk purchases. In 1980 it amounted to 220.2 million litres. The co-operative dairy industry bases its activity on raw material obtained with the province. The plants in Brzeziny, Głuchów, Łowicz, Rawa Mazowiecka, and Skierniewioe are unfortunately unable to process the whole quantity of the purchased milk which necessitates its transfers (ca. 25 million litreJ to processing plants in provinces of Łódź (70 per cent) and Warsaw (30 per cent). The industry manufactures all the more important groups of dairy products with production of cream, drinking milk, and cottage cheese showing the highest dynamics over the 1977** •1980 period. , „ .. Despite numerous difficulties there is predicted further growth of raw milk production by 1985 (to reach 250 million litre) *a well as expansion of the processing capacities. It is planned that the increment in processing capacities (by 150 to 200»0°0 litres per day) will be achieved through expansion of the plant at Łowicz and construction of two new plants in regions characterized with raw material surpluses i.e. in vicinity of Żyrardów and Rawa Mazowiecka.

Opis:
A big urban centre, as an absorptive consumer market of foodstuffs, exerts an influence on the profile of the agricultural production in neighbouring areas through market mechanisms. The theoretically delimitated area of the food zone in the urban administrative province of Łódź occupies 2,381.3 thousand hectare, and encompasses eight administrative units (provinces). This area is characterized with a distinct predominance of the agricultural function, which is reflected, among others, in a high percentage share of arabie land in the overall area considerably exceeding the national average figures. The biggest part of areas under crop is utilized for grains (55 p.c.), includlng mainly rye, which is cultivated almost twice as much intensively than the national average. Production of grains predominates in the central part of Sieradz province and in the eastern part of Piotrków province. Among the remaining crops, potatoes, sugar beets, and field cultures are of the biggest consumer importance. Production of food of vegetable origin in this zone accounts for ca. 10 per cent of the overall national production. In particular kinds of crops this share amounts to: grain — 9.7 per cent, potatoes — 11.6 per cent, vegetables — 10.2 per cent, fruit — 8.2 per cent. The northern areas of the food zone boast the highest agricultural productivity and those belonging to Piotrków province — the lowest. On the basis of the available planning reports and prevailing trends of changes in the land-cultivation structure, the author performed a rough estimation of production size (Table 7), which revealed favourable prospects of full satisfaction of food demand in Łódź agglomeration in the field of products of vegetable origin.
