The article contains an assessment of the raw material base
and processing capacities of the dairy industry in Skierniewice
province from the viewpoint of its further development. The dairy
industry plays an increasingly more important role in nutrition
of the population both in this province and in the urbanized
adjoining provinces. Its specific location between the two biggest
agglomerations in Poland has not changed the traditionally agricultural
character of this province. It’s reflected among others
in the structure of land utilization and in the employment
structure. In milk production this province scores higher indices
than the national average despite relatively small acreage of meadows
and pasture lands. As a result of a difficult fodder situation
in the country, the stock of cattle has been subject to some
fluctuations in recent years, which, however, did not exert any major
Influence on the level of milk purchases. In 1980 it amounted
to 220.2 million litres.
The co-operative dairy industry bases its activity on raw
material obtained with the province. The plants in Brzeziny,
Głuchów, Łowicz, Rawa Mazowiecka, and Skierniewioe are unfortunately
unable to process the whole quantity of the purchased milk
which necessitates its transfers (ca. 25 million litreJ to processing
plants in provinces of Łódź (70 per cent) and Warsaw (30
per cent). The industry manufactures all the more important groups
of dairy products with production of cream, drinking milk,
and cottage cheese showing the highest dynamics over the 1977**
•1980 period. , „ ..
Despite numerous difficulties there is predicted further growth
of raw milk production by 1985 (to reach 250 million litre)
*a well as expansion of the processing capacities. It is planned
that the increment in processing capacities (by 150 to 200»0°0
litres per day) will be achieved through expansion of the plant
at Łowicz and construction of two new plants in regions characterized
with raw material surpluses i.e. in vicinity of Żyrardów
and Rawa Mazowiecka.
