    Changes of coastlines have economic and social impact on the human population concentrated in coastal areas. The investigation of coastal change processes becomes important particularly at sinking-retreating-coast for future planning, and the derivation of scenarios must be based on the understanding of the driving processes. It is well known that coastal change is a complex result of an interaction of climate driven eustatic sea level change and vertical crustal movements. An index is given that allows to distinguish between coasts controlled by glacio-isostatic processes and those determined by the climatic forces of coastal morphogenesis. A simple model allows reconstructions of the palaeo-geographic history of sinking coasts. Prognostic scenarios of coastal change are possible by applying of parameterized vertical crustal movement data and sea level change data derived from climate modeling. These data have to be superimposed with the influence of storm events. The coupling of processes on different time scales between hours and millennia are questions under investigation.

    We prove that there exist constants C>0 and 0 < λ < 1 so that for all convex bodies K in $ℝ^n$ with non-empty interior and all integers k so that 1 ≤ k ≤ λn/ln(n+1), there exists a k-dimensional affine subspace Y of $ℝ^n$ satisfying $d(Y ∩ K, B_2^k) ≤ C(1+ √(k/ln(n/(kln(n+1))))$. This formulation of Dvoretzky's theorem for large dimensional sections is a generalization with a new proof of the result due to Milman and Schechtman for centrally symmetric convex bodies. A sharper estimate holds for the n-dimensional simplex.

    The paper examines the spatial overlap between the disenfranchisement of African Americans and the performance of William Shakespeare’s plays in the United States. In America, William Shakespeare seems to function as a prelapsarian poet, one who wrote before the institutionalization of colonial slavery, and he is therefore a poet able to symbolically function as a ‘public good’ that trumps America’s past associations with slavery. Instead, the modern American performance of Shakespeare emphasizes an idealized strain of human nature: especially when Americans perform Shakespeare outdoors, we tend to imagine ourselves in a primeval woodland, a setting without a history. Therefore, his plays are often performed without controversy—and (bizarrely) on or near sites specifically tied to the enslavement or disenfranchisement of people with African ancestry. New York City’s popular outdoor Shakespeare theater, the Delacorte, is situated just south of the site of Seneca Village, an African American community displaced for the construction of Central Park; Alabama Shakespeare Festival takes place on a former plantation; the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia makes frequent use of a hotel dedicated to a Confederate general; the University of Texas’ Shakespeare at Winedale festival is performed in a barn built with supports carved by slave labor; the Oregon Shakespeare Festival takes place within a state unique for its founding laws dedicated to white supremacy. A historiographical examination of the Texas site reveals how the process of erasure can occur within a ‘progressive’ context, while a survey of Shakespearean performance sites in New York, Alabama, Virginia, and Oregon shows the strength of the unexpected connection between the performance of Shakespeare in America and the subjugation of Black persons, and it raises questions about the unique and utopian assumptions of Shakespearean performance in the United States.

    Previous papers showed that the model of stratified flow, which was originally invented by Meyer, could be applied to describe changes of river bottom. Enabling the selection of circulation areas, this model allows the including of dead zones in flow patterns, which occur in the river bottom cavern. The intensity of sediment transport and analysis of changes of the river bottom cavern was specified on the basis of Ackers-White's known method.

    The Cal Orck’o tracksite is exposed in a quarry wall, approximately 4.4 km NW of Sucre (Department Chuquisaca, Bolivia) in the Altiplano/Cordillera Oriental, in the El Molino Formation (Middle Maastrichtian). Fossiliferous oolitic limestones, associated with large, freshwater stromatolites and nine levels of dinosaur tracks in the El Molino Formation document an open lacustrine environment. The main track-bearing level is almost vertical with a surface area of ~ 65,000 m2. The high-resolution mapping of the site from 1998 to 2015 revealed a total of 12,092 individual dinosaur tracks in 465 trackways. Nine different morphotypes of dinosaur tracks have been documented. Amongst them are several trackways of theropods, ornithopods, ankylosaurs and sauropods, with the latter group accounting for 26% of the trackways. Two different types of sauropod trackways are present. One exhibits speech-bubble-shaped manus impressions that are rotated outwardly and located more outwards than pes prints, and oval to rounded pes imprints with few details, but with a characteristic oval track shape. The second morphotype has more rounded and axially compressed pes imprints and horseshoe-like manus impressions. The manus shows clear impressions of digits I and V The first morphotype with the more rounded manus can be attributed to a derived titanosaur. The second is assigned to the new ichnogenus Calorckosauripus and was probably made by a basal titanosaur. Both sauropod morphotypes exhibit a narrow-gauge and a wide-gauge stance along the same trackway, and therefore the authors suggest that trackway width may not be correlated, or may not be correlated completely with the osteological characters of the trackmaker’s skeleton.

    Low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on semiconductor surface are described. We consider both surfaces which do not possess surface states within the bulk bandgap, such as GaAs(110), and surfaces which do have states within the gap, such as Ge(111) 2×1 and Ge(111)c(2×8). Band bending in the semiconductor due to the electric field in the vacuum penetrating the semiconductor is found to be a substantial effect in the former case. Transport limitations in the semiconductor give rise to additional voltage drops, which can be observed by making measurements over a wide range of tunnel current magnitudes.

    Alloyed silver-gold nanoparticles recently raised an interest in biomedicine as potential antibacterial and surface-functionalized agents for imaging, drugdelivery, and tumor thermo-therapy [1,2]. The here synthesized alloyed AgAu nanoparticles with different compositions of silver and gold, as determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), were prepared by reduction with citrate and tannic acid in aqueous media and subsequently functionalized by the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) [3]. UV spectroscopy confirmed that the particles consisted of alloyed Ag:Au and are not of a separate core-shell structure. The resulting nanoparticles were monodisperse and had a uniform size of ~6 nm, except pure Ag and Ag:Au-90:10, as shown by differential centrifugal sedimentation (DCS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and use of Rietveld refinement [4], the precise lattice parameters, crystallite size and microstrain were determined. Based on the results by XRD, DCS and TEM it was shown, that the nanoparticles were not twinned, except pure Ag and Ag:Au-90:10. Additionally, a distinct deviation from Vegard’s linear rule of alloy mixtures for the lattice parameter was found for the nanoparticles. This effect was also found for AgAu bulk materials, but was much more pronounced in the nanostate. Further investigations of the crystal structure of the alloyed nanoparticles by means of synchrotron radiation might be helpful to gain more information about the interactions of silver and gold atoms.

    In this investigation positron annihilation, photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques are employed to gain insight in the compensation of CdTe doped with the halogen Cl. We will demonstrate that the high resistivity of CdTe:Cl cannot be explained by the interaction between the shallow effective mass type donor Cl on Te site and the doping induced shallow acceptor complex, a Cd vacancy paired off with a nearest-neighbour Cl atom (A centre). From electron paramagnetic resonance investigations we conclude that the mid gap trap, often detected by electrical methods in CdTe, is not the isolated Cd vacancy.

    We review recent magneto-optical investigations performed on HgTe-CdTe semimetallic superlattices. Far infrared magnetotransmission data obtained as a function of temperature, photon energy, and sense of circular polarization are compared with the predictions of a comprehensive new theory which fully incorporates the complexities of type-III superlattice band structure. It is found that the theory accounts for nearly all of the many unusual features which have been observed experimentally. These include the occurrence of two cyclotron resonances due to holes; the coexistence of electron and hole cyclotron resonances in the low temperature limit; the observation of three distinct CRA minima; a step-like change in the temperature dependence of the electron cyclotron mass; and a dramatic increase of the CRI absorption peak intensity with increasing magnetic field.

    The aim of the TOPVOYS project supported by the MarTERA ERA-Net Cofund program within the European Commission is to advance and implement analyses tools and decision support system for voyage optimisation. Based on marine weather analyses and forecasts combined with near real time satellite-based observations of wind, wave and surface current conditions as well as sea surface temperature fields the best shipping route are examined. The proposed approach aims to identify the optimum balance between minimisation of transit time and fuel consumption as well as reduction of emissions without placing the vessel at risk to damage and or crew injury. As such it is compliant with the International Maritime Organization guidelines [6] for ship routeing to keep the traffic smooth and avoid accidents, notably in the presence of unfavorable marine meteorological conditions. The tool performances will be demonstrated both in post-voyage analyses and real time operations for the North Atlantic Ocean crossings, voyages from Europe through the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Channel to the Far East (e.g. China, South Korea) and voyages around Southern Africa.

    Concerning the contribution of fungi to soil carbon sequestration, various methods have been used to extract ergosterol from soil samples. This study aims to explore the extraction ability and applicability of commonly used methods to extract ergosterol from two contrasting soils. An agricultural soil (chernozem) and a forest soil (podzol) were extracted with different types of cell lysis such as alkaline, glass bead, and ultrasonication methods in association with simple shaking. The ergosterol concentration was measured by high pressure liquid chromatography. Regardless of the method applied, ergosterol yield was higher in podzol than in chernozem. Alkaline extraction resulted in the highest ergosterol concentrations for both soils and miniaturized glass bead extraction produced comparable results in the case of chernozem. In terms of applicability, the non-alkaline methods were simpler to conduct and less demanding of labour, chemical use and glassware and more flexible in terms of the equipment used for mechanical disruption. Despite the limit of the two soil types in the present study, only the simple shaking method was revealed to be dependent on soil type. Based on our results, we recommend the miniaturized glass bead method for agricultural soils, low in organic matter for high throughput. However, not all of the methods described allow for the proper separation of coextracted organic substances from organic-rich soil.
