Opis:
Wood density (WD) is a central trait to explain tree functioning, and is also an important predic- tor of tree above-ground biomass (AGB). Therefore, radial trends in WD (i.e., from pith to bark) may have important implications in understanding tree life-history variations, as well as in forest biomass and carbon estimations. The occurrence of these radial trends in WD is thought to vary among forests, particularly with canopy openness and stratification. Yet, most of the studies on this topic in tropical forests have been conducted on lowland closed-canopy forests, while very little is known about the prevalence and magnitude of these trends among trees from open-canopy forests, such as high-mountain forests. I examined radial gradients in WD and explored their implications for AGB estimations. Radial wood cores were taken with increment borers from 69 trees belonging to 18 species from a high-An- dean forest. Each wood core was cut every 1-cm, and WD was measured for every 1-cm segment. Errors in AGB estimations that resulted from not considering radial trends in WD were estimated for each tree and species. Eight out of eighteen species had significant radial trends in WD. Among these species, two species showed decreases of WD towards the bark, one species showed increments of WD from pith to bark, and five species showed U-shaped gradients (i.e., high WD near the pith and bark, and relatively low WD at inter- mediate diameters). The prevalence of U-shaped radial trends in WD may be related to the relatively open and less stratified canopy of the study forest. Not taking into account radial trends in WD led in general to under-estimations of AGB (averaging −7.66 % when using mean WD, and −5.56 % for outer WD) in most of the study species, suggesting that tropical high-Andean forests may possibly store more biomass carbon than has been previously estimated. These findings are important to expand our knowledge on wood allocation patterns during tree ontogeny, and also to improve the accuracy of biomass and carbon estimations in tropical high-Andean forests

Opis:
Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Periodical retinal screening is highly recommended in order to detect any sign of the disease and apply the appropriated treatment. Different systems for the analysis of retinal images have been designed in order to assist this process. The segmentation of the optic disc is an important step in the development of a retinal screening system. In this paper we present an unsupervised method for the segmentation of the optic disc. The main obstruction in the optic disc segmentation process is the presence of blood vessels breaking the continuity of the object. While many other methods have addressed this problem trying to eliminate the vessels, we have incorporated the blood vessel information into our formulation. The blood vessels inside of the optic disc are used to give continuity to the object to segment. Our approach is based on the graph cut technique, where the graph is constructed by considering the relationship between neighbouring pixels and by the likelihood of them belonging to the foreground and background from prior information. Our method was tested on two public datasets, DIARETDB1 and DRIVE. The performance of our method was measured by calculating the overlapping ratio (Oratio), sensitivity and the mean absolute distance (MAD) with respect to the manually labeled images.

Botanical biopesticides constitute an important tool for Integrated Pest Management practices. Uruguay has a great potential for developing botanical biopesticides from its abundant native flora. Dodonaea viscosa Jacq. is a native Sapindaceae that in preliminary studies was shown to possess a potential deterrent activity against insect models. In this work, ethanolic extracts of the leaves of this species were studied. Bioguided fractionation and supercritical fluid extraction led to the isolation of active compounds. For that purpose four insect models were used: Epilachna paenulata, Spodoptera littoralis, Myzus persicae, and Rhopalosiphum padi, which are pests of crops of economic importance. Lupeol, stigmasterol, stigmast-7-en-3-ol, and a labdane diterpene were isolated and showed differential activity against the models.

Opis:
EDAS (EGNOS Data Access Service) is the EGNOS internet broadcast service, which provides free of charge access to the data collected and generated by the EGNOS infrastructure. EDAS disseminates over the Internet, both in real time and via an FTP archive, the raw data of the GPS, GLONASS (no commitment on GLONASS data is provided (1)) and EGNOS GEO satellites collected by the receivers located at the EGNOS reference stations, which are mainly distributed over Europe and North Africa. The EDAS services offer several types of GNSS data in various protocols and formats, such as DGNSS corrections. This paper reports on the results of some in-field tests conducted by ESSP and Topcon Agriculture to confirm the suitability of EDAS DGNSS corrections for precision farming in Europe. The European Commission (EC) is the owner of EGNOS system (including EDAS) and has delegated the exploitation of EGNOS to the European GNSS Agency (GSA). EDAS service provision is performed by ESSP, as EGNOS Services Provider, under contract with the GSA, the EGNOS program manager. In the ENC 2018 article “EDAS (EGNOS Data Access Service): Differential GPS corrections performance test with state-of-the-art precision agriculture system”, ESSP and Topcon Agriculture presented the results of the first in-field test conducted in a dynamic and real-life environment in the summer of 2017. The test results indicated that the EDAS DGNSS corrections could enable a reliable pass-to-pass accuracy performance for a wide range of precision agriculture applications and become an attractive solution for cereal farms, when the farm is located in the vicinity of an EGNOS reference station. In particular, Topcon Agriculture acknowledged that the observed performance was sufficient to support the following precision agriculture applications: spraying and spreading of any crop type, tilling and harvesting of cereal. Then, ESSP and Topcon Agriculture engaged in additional testing activities to further characterise the EDAS DGPS performance in different scenarios (i.e. at various European locations and with a variety of distances between the designated farm and the target EGNOS reference station). In each test, multiple runs with the rover tractors have been performed over the reference patterns predefined in the Topcon guidance systems. Data recorded during the tests has been analysed in detail, looking at the key performance indicators (e.g. cross track error and pass-to-pass performance) that characterize the EDAS DGPS performance for precision agriculture applications. Different techniques for the computation of the pass-to-pass accuracy performance have been used, including a procedure to measure live in the field and a post-processing alternative. The diversity of scenarios available allows drawing conclusions on the applicability of EDAS DGPS corrections (in terms of maximum distance from the target EGNOS station) for precision agriculture and also understanding the impact of operationally relevant aspects such as the quality of the mobile internet coverage (highly variable across Europe). The EDAS system and its architecture, the main types of data disseminated through EDAS services and the online information available to the EDAS users are introduced in this paper. In particular, the EDAS Ntrip service is described in detail, since it provides the differential corrections to the GPS and GLONASS satellites at the EGNOS reference stations in RTCM format, which are the basis for the present study. The article also reports on the results of the latest tests, which have been performed using Topcon receivers, vehicles and auto-steering systems. In all cases, two different Topcon guidance systems on board tractors were running simultaneously to assess the EDAS DGPS positioning performance with respect to a the reference provided by a top-performing RTK-based Topcon solution. The objective of this paper is to draw conclusions on the use of EDAS DGPS corrections as a reliable free-of-charge alternative for precision farming in Europe (especially for cereal farms), based on the available performance results from the testing campaign and the feedback from the involved precision agriculture experts.

Physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on various mineral adsorbents is becoming extremely interesting in the field of energy and environment where CCS technology is an option for CO2 emission reduction. In the article the halloysite from Dunino deposit was assessed in terms of its potential use as a CO2 adsorbent. Results of tests indicate that modified halloysite (i.e. calcinated or modified by acid treatment) has a relatively low adsorption capacity which should be easily increased by other surface modification methods. Sorption kinetic is rather fast and over 85-89% of CO2 adsorption is accounted by a rapid sorption step i.e. 7 to 16 seconds.

The drop of coercivity, while preserving the saturation magnetic polarisation $J_{S}$ of substituted M-type Ba hexaferrites with composition $BaFe_{12-2x}(Me_{1}Me_{2})_{x}O_{19}$, was studied. Divalent $Me_{1}$=Ni, Zn, Sn and tetravalent $Me_{2}$=Ru, Sn ionic combinations were used in various compounds. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to reveal sites of replacement of the $Fe^{3+}$ ions by $Ru^{4+}$ and $Sn^{4+}$. The $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$ and $Sn^{2+}$ occupation sites were identified as well. Strong drop of coercivity difference Δ $H_{c}(x)$ near x=0.1 and slight decrease of Δ $H_{c}(x)$ close to x=0.3 was obtained for suitable coupling of $Me_{1}^{2+}$ and $Me_{2}^{4+}$ ions.

This paper presents an investigation about acoustic absorption of mortars with partial replacement of sand by waste (plywood formwork, rice husk, and thermoplastic shoe counters), examining different levels of replacement (0%, 5%, 10%, 25%, and 50%). The measurement of acoustic absorption was performed using a plane wave impedance tube with 100 mm diameter, using mortar samples of 20 mm, in frequency range 200-2000 Hz. Results demonstrated that some composite with waste presented noise reduction coefficient (NRC) above the reference mortar (NRC = 0.0343), such as a composite with 50% rice husk (NRC = 0.2757) and other with 50% of plywood waste (NRC = 0.2052). Since there is virtually no cost or difficulty to use these residuals, it may be concluded that it is a sustainable alternative to improve the acoustic comfort and reduce the impact of the waste on the environment.

Opis:
Morphological differences in cap formation were found when trophozoites of different free-living amoebae were treated with the lectin Concanavalin A, which resulted in a rapid redistribution of certain surface components to form small clusters and membrane-folded structures of diverse sizes. Acanthamoeba castellanii, Acanthamoba polyphaga and Naegleria lovaniensis exhibited characteristic caps, however, in A. castellanii this structure was larger and included several folds of the plasma membrane; furthermore, some of these caps had vacuoles containing a fi bro granular content. In contrast, the caps formed by A. polyphaga and N. lovaniensis lacked vacuoles. Regarding Naegleria fowleri, the trophozoites did not produce a defi ned cap, and only small patches of lectin-bound surface receptor complexes were observed at one pole of the cell body. In the free-living amoebae studied, it was not possible to correlate the shape and size of cap with pathogenicity.

Several species of Solanum produce secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the inhibitory activity of Solanum chrysotrichum, S. erianthum, S. torvum and S. rostratum against phytopathogenic Curvularia lunata was determined. Methanol extracts from roots, stems, leaves and fruits were evaluated by the method of mycelial inhibition on agar and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined on a liquid medium. To increase the antimicrobial activity, the combined activity of the most active extracts for each phytopathogen was also determined (a combination of intra and interspecies extracts). The results showed that 12 of the 16 methanolic extracts of Solanum species had antifungal effects against C. lunata. The extracts of S. rostratum and S. erianthum developed the highest activity (~80% inhibition and 28.4 MIC μg . ml–1), even, equal to or greater than, the reference fungicide. The mixture of the active extracts of S. chrysotrichum and S. torvum increased their activity. Various extracts affected the macro and microscopic morphology and most of them reduced the number of conidia of the fungus. This resulted in the capacity to control the vegetative growth and reproduction of C. lunata, the causal fungus of corn leaf spot disease.

Using ultrastructural cytochemical techniques we have found differences in the distribution of surface coat components between the invasive protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica and the non-invasive Entamoeba dispar. Carbohydrate-containing components and anionic sites in the cell surface of both species were detected by staining with ruthenium red and cationized ferritin, respectively. Ruthenium red staining revealed a thicker surface coat in E. histolytica trophozoites, whereas trophozoites of E. dispar showed a higher concentration of cationized ferritin particles on its surface. Mannose or glucose residues were found at the plasma membrane of both parasites treated with Concanavalin A (Con A)-peroxidase; the surface reaction product was more evident in E. dispar, compared with E. histolytica. Con A rapidly produced surface caps in E. histolytica trophozoites, whereas E. dispar showed a much less efficient mobilization of surface Con A receptors. Agglutination with Con A produced much larger clumps in E. histolytica in comparison with E. dispar. In turn, biotinylation assays revealed striking differences in the composition of surface membrane proteins in both amebic species. Overall, these results further emphasize the phenotypic differences between these two common parasites of the human intestinal tract, once considered to be the same protozoan.

V2G (Vehicle-to-grid) technology will report important benefits for the operation and safety of the grid. In order to facilitate the expansion of the V2G technology in a future, it is recommended to offer the drivers with easy to use methods to charge and discharge their EV batteries. In this sense, wireless chargers are expected to play a relevant role in the future electrical networks as it reduces the users intervention. The development of this kind of system is still open to improve them in terms of their operation, their compliance and their control. An important issue for the evaluation of these systems is the efficiency, which measures the power losses occurring in the system. This paper addresses a deep study about the losses in a bidirectional wireless charger. Then, it provides with a mathematical model to characterize them. This model is validated by means of experimental results conducted in a 3.7-kW prototype.

This article presents a study on the postural equilibrium conditions for biped robots. Criteria for dynamic walking, such as ZMP and CoP are introduced and their similarities discussed. We also introduce the effects of a compliant foot and take them into consideration during the evaluation of the criteria. A model of a planar biped is used to imitate the movements of a human subject as recorded by the VICON motion capture system. In order to estimate the criteria, body segments accelerations and ground reaction forces are needed. ZMP and CoP are analyzed during both single and double support phases for the model’s motion. A linear shift function is used to transport the load of the biped between the supporting legs during the double support phase. We compare simulated CoP trajectories obtained using a rigid foot and a compliant, deformable spring-damper system located between the ankle joint and the sole of the foot. It is seen that the foot’s deformation smoothes the CoP trajectory and improves the biped’s stability.

Opis:
The precise record of simoceratins sampled bed−by−bed is first reported from Mexico (Mazatepec area in Puebla, central−eastern Mexico), as well as the existence of lappeted peristomes in these ammonites. Both Pseudovolanoceras aesinense and the subspecies Pseudovolanoceras aesinense chignahuapense are shown to occur among Mexican simoceratins. The European species and the Mexican subspecies share the same stratigraphic range in the studied sections, yet they differ in ephebic sculpture. Ecological adaptation to neritic seas corresponding to eastern Mexico areas is interpreted, forcing phenotypic deviation with geographic significance, i.e., subspeciation. The new subspecies would indicate stratigraphic horizons within the Semiformiceras semiforme/Haploceras verruciferum Chronozone in the Mediterranean Tethys. A revision of contemporaneous simoceratins in the Americas is founded on a comparative analysis with respect to the European species P. aesinense.

Opis:
The radiolarian and calpionellid microfacies are characteristic for the latest Tithonian–Early Berriasian limestones of the Guasasa Formation in the Sierra del Infierno, western Cuba. The limestones of the uppermost part of the El Americano Memberbelongto the Late Tithonian Crassicollaria intermedia Subzone, Crassicollaria Standard Zone, and to the basal part of the Early Berriasian Calpionella alpina Subzone. The lower part of the Tumbadero Member is assigned to the C. alpina Subzone of the Calpionella Standard Zone. A heteromorph ammonite assemblage (Protancyloceras-Vinalesites) crosses the Crassicollaria/Calpionella Zones boundary. The studied limestones belong to three nannoconid assemblages of latest Tithonian–Early Berriasian age assigned to Nannoconus wintereri Subzone, N. steinmannii minor Subzone and N. steinmannii steinmannii Zone. Radiolarian taxa identified in thin sections are consistent with the lower part of D2 radiolarian zone from Western Tethys. The investigated deposits have been probably accumulated in the dysaerobic zone. At the Tithonian–Berriasian (J/K) boundary, dysaerobic to anaerobic conditions could be widespread in the deeper waters of the northwestern Proto-Caribbean basin.
Wapienie najwyższej części ogniwa El Americano formacji Guasasa (Tab. 1) należą do podpoziomu Crassicollaria intermedia poziomu standardowego Crassicollaria (górny tyton) i najniższej części podpoziomu Calpionella alpina (dolny berias) poziomu standardowego Calpionella (Fig. 2, 3). Dolna część ogniwa Tumbadero została zaliczona do podpoziomu C. alpina. W wapieniach najwyższej części ogniwa El Americano (Fig. 4A) i dolnej części ogniwa Tumbadero (Fig. 4B) charakterystyczne są mikrofacje kalpionellidowa (Fig. 5A) i radiolariowa (Fig. 6A). Obecność juwenilnych amonitów rozwiniętych: Protancyloceras gr. hondense (Imlay) (Fig. 12A), Protancyloceras sp. i Vinalesites sp. (Fig. 12B) została stwierdzona w niektórych płytkach cienkich wykonanych z wapieni (Tab. 4). Zespół tych amonitów przekracza granicę poziomów kalpionellidowych Crassicollaria i Calpionella (Tab. 5).

Opis:
A numerical method is developed for estimating the acoustic power of any baffled planar structure, which is vibrating with arbitrary surface velocity profile. It is well known that this parameter may be calculated with good accuracy using near field data, in terms of an impedance matrix, which is generated by the discretization of the vibrating surface into a number of elementary radiators. Thus, the sound pressure field on the structure surface can be determined by a combination of the matrix and the volume velocity vector. Then, the sound power can be estimated through integration of the acoustic intensity over a closed surface. On the other hand, few works exist in which the calculation is done in the far field from near field data by the use of radiation matrices, possibly because the numerical integration becomes complicated and expensive due to large variations of directivity of the source. In this work a different approach is used, based in the so-called Propagating Matrix, which is useful for calculating the sound pressure of an arbitrary number of points into free space, and it can be employed to estimate the sound power by integrating over a finite number of pressure points over a hemispherical surface surrounding the vibrating structure. Through numerical analysis, the advantages/disadvantages of the current method are investigated, when compared with numerical methods based on near field data. A flexible rectangular baffled panel is considered, where the normal velocity profile is previously calculated using a commercial finite element software. However, the method can easily be extended to any arbitrary shape. Good results are obtained in the low frequency range showing high computational performance of the method. Moreover, strategies are proposed to improve the performance of the method in terms of both computational cost and speed.

Opis:
The paper analyses the performance of an Automatic Vessel Identification System on Medium Frequency (AVISOMEF), which works with the Grid Method (GM) on high density maritime European routes using real data and uniformly distributed data. Compared to other systems, AVISOMEF is a novelty, as it is not a satellite system, nor is it limited by a given coverage distance, in contrast to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), though in exceptional circumstances it leans towards it. To perform the analysis, special simulation software was developed. Moreover, a number of maritime routes along with their traffic density data were selected for the study. For each route, two simulations were performed, the first of which based on the uniform traffic distribution along the route, while the second one made use of real AIS data positioning of vessels sailing on the selected routes. The obtained results for both simulations made the basis for formulating conclusions regarding the capacity of selected routes to support AVISOMEF.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between age, aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and other health indicators among 3 rescue groups. The type of training and the subjective perception of physical fitness obtained via the Assessment Questionnaire of Physical Fitness were also analysed. To obtain VO2 max, 37 firefighters, 22 lifeguards and 59 mine rescue workers had a treadmill test. Their body mass index and body fat percentage were also calculated. The results show a significant decline in VO2 max of the older participants, which affects the effectiveness of rescue work. Furthermore, the training of all groups was inconsistent and based on individual needs. Variable training and the decline in VO2 max with age affected the effectiveness of the rescue tasks of each group.

The Bay of Cartagena (Colombia) is a site of commercial interest owing to its privileged location for maritime operations; however, the discharge of wastewaters from industrial activities and domestic sewage are affecting the water quality, and consequently, the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found in sediments and water of main ports, causing severe damage to the ecosystem. Thus, alternatives for the treatment of the Bay of Cartagena’s water and sediments are needed. In this paper, we performed the exergetic analysis of removing PAHs from water and sediments in the Bay of Cartagena using an adsorption-based treatment process with chitosan microbeads and magnetic nanoparticles (CM-TiO2/Fe3O4). The outcomes of exergy of utilities, irreversibilities and exergy losses were calculated using process data and exergy of substances. The Aspen plus V10 software provided the physical exergies, while chemical exergies were gathered from the literature. Overall exergy efficiency of 0.3% was determined for the seawater and sediment treatment facility. A sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the impact and viability of different design alternatives.

The effect of ultrasound treatment (UT) on a beverage from mango pulp and carrot juice with added turmeric powder on total soluble phenolic content (TSP), total carotenoid content (TC) and antioxidant capacity (AOC) was evaluated. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to obtain the optimal formulation of the beverage. The AOC was assigned as a response variable in addition to TSP and TC. Mathematical modeling showed that the formulation with 35% (v/v) of mango pulp, 10% (v/v) of carrot juice, and 0.7% (w/v) of turmeric powder, yielded the highest values of TSP, TC, and AOC. The beverages were subjected to different ultrasound conditions with varying exposure times (ET), sonication amplitudes (SA), and pulse cycles (PC) to obtain the highest values for response variables. Statistical modeling showed that a UT at 21 min ET, 100% SA, and 0.7 s PC, increased TSP, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) by 15.5%, 45.1%, and 15.9%, respectively. Seven phenolic acids, three curcuminoids, five flavonoids, and a xanthonoid were identified in the beverages. The quantities of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, chlorogenic acids, (+)-catechin, quercetin, kaempferol, (–)-gallocatechin gallate, and mangiferin were higher in the UT beverage compared to the control, suggesting their release from cell-wall structures as a result of UT.

Based on ab initio calculations and group theory we present a comprehensive analysis of the electronic structure of GaAs:N and GaAs:B alloys. In particular, we study the effective mass of conduction electrons in GaAs:N as a function of pressure and the Fermi energy. We find that the lowest conduction band is strongly non-parabolic, which leads to an increase in the effective mass with the electron energy. The rate of the increase is enhanced by the hydrostatic pressure. Theoretical results are compared to experimental data, and a qualitative agreement is found.

Opis:
The subfamily Glyptodontinae (Xenarthra, Cingulata) comprises one of the most frequently recorded glyptodontids in South America. Recently, the North American genus Glyptotherium was recorded in South America, in addition to the genus Glyptodon. It has been shown that both genera shared the same geographic distribution in central-north and eastern areas of South America (Venezuela and Brazil, respectively). Although some characters allow differentiation between adult specimens of both genera, the morphological distinction between these two genera is rather difficult in juvenile specimens. In this contribution, a detailed morphological, morphometric and histological survey of a juvenile specimen of Glyptodontinae recovered from the Late Pleistocene of northern Brazil is performed. The relative lower osteoderms thickness, the particular morphology of the annular and radial sulci and the distal osseous projections of the caudal osteoderms suggest that the specimen belongs to the genus Glyptotherium. In addition, the validity of some statistical tools to distinguish between different ontogenetic stages and in some cases between genera is verified. The osteoderm microstructure of this juvenile individual is characterized by being composed of a cancellous internal core surrounded by a compact bone cortex. Primary bone tissue mostly consists of highly vascularized, woven-fibered bone tissue. Unlike that observed in adult Glyptodontinae, both the Sharpey fibers and the fibrous and laminar parallel bone tissue as secondary bone are absent. This study enhances our knowledge about those morphological and histological changes that occur through the ontogeny in glyptodonts.

Opis:
This investigation was undertaken to determine the optimum conditions for physical-chemical treatment of waste water contaminated with heavy metals in the industry of metallic coatings. The industry uses substances such as: inorganic acids, alkalis, acidic and alkaline metal salts, that has a high water demand in the processes of flushing and cleaning the parts to be coated. According to the preliminary characterization of samples and reported in the literature theory, physico-chemical process was implemented for the removal of contaminants that consisted in chemical oxidation of CN-ions, followed by chemical precipitation made next to a coagulation/flocculation and subsequent adsorption on activated coal. Laboratory scale tests showed the optimal conditions of treatment including chemical oxidation by the addition of 4.15 cm3 of H2O2 (30%) per gram of CN, chemical precipitation with NaOH to a pH of 12, followed by coagulation/flocculation with Fe2(SO4)3 at a speed of 135 rpm for 3 min and 20 rpm for 20 min and finally the addition of 1.0 g of adsorbent previously activated at 700°C. From this study, it is clear that the adsorption on activated carbon is highly efficient in the removal of heavy metals from industrial waste water from electroplating. However, it is also clear that the parallel application of the treatments, shown here, is more effective to completely remove contaminants such as lead, nickel, silver, and copper at laboratory scale, so it is recommended the simultaneous use of these physico-chemical processes.

Równoległe stosowanie zabiegów przedstawionych w pracy zapewnia jeszcze większą efektywność w całkowitym usuwaniu ołowiu, niklu, srebra i miedzi w skali laboratoryjnej. Dlatego równoczesne stosowanie tych zabiegów jest zalecane w praktyce.

A generalization of the Málaga atmospheric optical communications links treated as a finite number of generalized-K distributed sub-channels is analyzed in terms of outage probability and outage rate when its β parameter belongs to the set of real numbers. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first time that β ∈ ℜ is considered. The new analytical expressions derived in this paper lead to a new physical and more realistic interpretation of atmospheric optical links, especially in terms of performance.

The main open-field producer regions of cucurbits (watermelon, squash, melon and cucumber) in Panama (Los Santos, Herrera and Coclé provinces) were surveyed for molecular identification, occurrence and distribution of Thrips palmi (the most important pest thrip species on cucurbits in Panama), Frankliniella intonsa and Frankliniella cephalica during the growing seasons of 2009 to 2013 and 2017 to 2018. Forty plots were surveyed and DNA extracts of 186 thrips (larvae and adults) were analyzed by multiplex PCR, using a set of T. palmi-specific primers in combination with a set of insect-universal primers. DNA extracts corresponding to 174 individual thrips (93.5%) rendered both PCR products of expected size with T. palmi-specific and insect-universal primers, whereas the remaining DNA extracts corresponding to 12 individual thrips (6.5%) only rendered the product of the expected size with insect-universal primers. Sequencing of those PCR products and BLAST analysis allowed for the identification of F. intonsa and F. cephalica. Thrips palmi was detected in all three provinces, while F. intonsa and F. cephalica were detected in Herrera and Los Santos provinces. To our knowledge, this is not only the first detection of F. intonsa in Panama, but also the first detection of F. cephalica in Panamanian cucurbit crops.

Agile development is a crucial issue within software engineering because one of the goals of any project leader is to increase the speed and flexibility in the development of new commercial products. In this sense, project managers must find the best resource configuration for each of the work packages necessary for the management of software development processes in order to keep the team motivated and committed to the project and to improve productivity and quality. This paper presents ReSySTER, a hybrid recommender system based on fuzzy logic, rough set theory and semantic technologies, aimed at helping project leaders to manage software development projects. The proposed system provides a powerful tool for project managers supporting the development process in Scrum environments and helping to form the most suitable team for different work packages. The system has been evaluated in a real scenario of development with the Scrum framework obtaining promising results.

Jednak jakość rur nowej generacji wykonywanych ze stali o wyższej wytrzymałości i twardości wymaga zastosowania nowych materiałów przewyższających właściwości mechaniczne stali D2. Zaistniała więc konieczność zmian technologii, przeprojektowania narzędzi, przebadania nowych materiałów i opracowania odpowiedniej obróbki cieplnej, zapewniając im dłuższą żywotność i zmniejszenie przestojów w celu spełnienia oczekiwań produkcyjnych. W niniejszym projekcie zostały przeanalizowane i ocenione najlepsze opcje przedstawione na rynku narzędzi do pracy na zimno w celu zwiększenia żywotności istniejących narzędzi (stal D2). Ocenę przeprowadzono w warunkach laboratoryjnych zbliżonych maksymalnie do parametrów produkcyjnych. Wykorzystano tester do badań tribologicznych (T-05) i wykonano badania dynamiczne (próba Charpy'ego). Wykazano przydatność nowych materiałów i możliwość uzyskania oszczędności.
Industries engaged in roll forming of tubes apply different methodologies and innovating technologies in order to perform this task, but tubes with welded seams are more profitable. The basic tooling used to roll-form tubes, or rolls, are usually made of a tool steel with a high Chromium content, namely, D2 steel. However, in order to produce higher quality tubes of high-strength steels, higher mechanical properties than those shown by D2 steel are required. As a consequence, new technologies, designs, materials, and heat treatments have emerged so the new requirements are met. This has a direct impact on the costs incurred and the productivity of metalmechanic industries. In this project, various cold work steels were analysed and compared with D2 steel, in order to improve the tool life of rolls for roll forming of tubes. Tribological testing was done with a T-05 block-on-ring setup with testing conditions similar to those in real life. Charpy testing was done in order to obtain impact toughness. The obtained results are of great importance, because they may result on significant cost reductions.

In the silicon ribbon on a sacrificial template process silicon is deposited on both sides of a carbon ribbon, thus forming a Si/carbon/Si trilayer. The fast cooling of the ribbon in large temperature gradients generates stresses that are detrimental to both the electrical performance and the mechanical behaviour of the wafers. The assessment of the stresses is crucial for the setting-up of thermal treatments allowing for the stress relaxation of the wafers, prior to the cell fabrication. We present an analysis of the stress in the as-grown trilayer by a simulation of the thermomechanical behaviour of the cooling ribbon. Experimental measurements of the stress in as-grown and annealed trilayers are also presented. The results permit to establish the conditions for optimized growth and annealing.

Propagation is an essential factor ensuring good coverage of wireless communications systems. Propagation models are used to predict losses in the path between transmitter and receiver nodes. They are usually defined for general conditions. Therefore, their results are not always adapted to the behavior of real signals in a specific environment. The main goal of this work is to propose a new model adjusting the loss coefficients based on empirical data, which can be applied in an indoor university campus environment. The Oneslope, Log-distance and ITU models are described to provide a mathematical base. An extensive measurement campaign is performed based on a strict methodology considering different cases in typical indoor scenarios. New loss parameter values are defined to adjust the mathematical model to the behavior of real signals in the campus environment. The experimental results show that the model proposed offers an attenuation average error of 2.5% with respect to the losses measured. In addition, comparison of the proposed model with existing solutions shows that it decreases the average error significantly for all scenarios under evaluation.

Due to their nutritional and sensorial characteristics, tropical fruits like guava, mamey sapote, and passion fruit are regularly incorporated into daily diets. Their by-products, especially peels, are approximately 10 to 35% of their weight and possess an important content of bioactive compounds, such as dietary fiber and phenolics. The nutritional, technological, physio-functional properties and phenolic compound compositions of guava, mamey sapote, and passion fruit peels were studied. Peels had promising techno- and physio-functional characteristics, good dietary fiber contents (45.18-61.42 g/100 g), and phenolic profiles with ferulic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric, and catechin as the main compounds. Peel powders also showed excellent DPPH radical scavenging activity (125.3–252.4 µmol TE/100 g) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, TEAC (369.2–656.8 µmol TE/100 g). The α-amylase and lipase inhibitory activity varied from 28.15 to 51.4% and 30.89 to 57.15%, respectively. Higher values of α-glucosidase inhibition capacity were found, ranging from 51.64 to 70.32%. The chemical composition and properties reported in the present work suggest that peel powders of these guava, mamey sapote, and passion fruit could be used as constituents in different foods, such as bakery and meat goods, with beneficial health effects like control of hyperglycemia, improved intestinal function, and control of overweight; however, more studies are necessary for animal models and humans to confirm these bioactivities conclusively.

Although in the scientific literature there are studies regarding optimization of structural members subject to static loads or even cyclic in-phase loads, the optimization of structures subject to cyclic, out-of-phase multiaxial loads is still an unexplored issue. In this paper, we present an approach to the problem of size optimization of rectangular cross-section members subject to multiaxial in-phase and out-of-phase cyclic loads. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the cross sectional area of such elements while retaining their fatigue endurance. Under the proposed methodology, optimum values of the area are achieved for six loading cases and for three values of the height to width ratio of the cross section, and these values are reported. The novelty of the approach lies in the inclusion of two multiaxial high cycle fatigue criteria, i.e., Dang Van and Vu-Halm-Nadot ones, as constraints for size optimization problems, fully integrated within an in-house developed tool, capable of handling non-proportional stresses. A plot of the feasible solution space for this optimization problem is also obtained.

We present an overview of the factors affecting soft magnetic properties, fast domain wall propagation and giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in thin amorphous wires. The magnetoelastic anisotropy is one of the most important parameters that determine the magnetic properties of glass-coated microwires and therefore annealing can be very effective for manipulation the magnetic properties of amorphous ferromagnetic glass-coated microwires. Increasing of DW velocity in Fe-rich and Fe-Ni based (low Ni content) microwires is achieved after annealing. After heat treatment of Co-rich microwires we can observe transformation of inclined hysteresis loops to rectangular and coexistence of fast magnetization switching and GMI effect in the same sample. On the other hand stress annealing of Fe- and Co-rich microwires allows achievement of considerable magnetic softening and GMI effect enhancement.

The growth process by casting methods of multi-crystalline Si results in a crystalline material with, among other defects, a high density of dislocations and grain boundaries. Impurity incorporation and their gathering around grain boundaries and dislocations seem to be the main factor determining the electrical activity of those defects, which limit the minority carrier lifetime. In this work, we analyze multi-crystalline Si samples by combining etching processes to reveal the defects, Raman spectroscopy for strain measurements, and light beam induced current measurements for the localization of electrically active defects. In particular, we have explored the etching routes capable to reveal the main defects (grain boundaries and dislocation lines), while their electrical activity is studied by the light beam induced current technique. We further analyze the strain levels around these defects by Raman micro-spectroscopy, aiming to obtain a more general picture of the correlation between residual stress and electrical activity of the extended defects. The higher stress levels are observed around intra-grain defects associated with dislocation lines, rather than around the grain boundaries. On the other hand, the intra-grain defects are also observed to give dark light beam induced current contrast associated with a higher electrical activity of these defects as compared to the grain boundaries.

There is a real need to use various efficient energy supply systems that are not aggressive towards the global environment. Hydrogen has been seen in different research papers presented in the literature as an essential fuel to generate energy in various energy storage systems. As it is well-known, it is possible to generate renewable electricity using electrolysis. The hydrogen produced can be sold as fuel for various systems, most notably its use in solid oxide fuel cells and a host of modern applications today. Current low-temperature fuel cells are ideal for hydrogen operation, but are not suitable for hydrogen mixtures. In this article, a mathematical analysis was carried out to generate electrical energy in a fuel cell, fed with synthesis gas from the residual biomass gasification process; the primary interest was the generation of electrical energy, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which operate at the temperature of the gas at the outlet of the gasifier were analyzed. The practical efficiency obtained and the theoretical results of the SOFC operation were shown.

Opis:
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the fourth most deadly cancer in the world for which surgery is the main treatment. Colorectal surgery can be performed through a wide incision in the abdomen or using minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques. Some of these techniques include transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM ), transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME ), and robot-assisted surgery. Studies increasingly confirm that resections using MIS techniques are safe, oncologically equivalent to open surgery and have better short-term results. These surgical approaches are, however, technically demanding and result in a steep learning curve. The main objective of this study is to review the different MIS techniques for colorectal surgery, as well as the training tools and programs designed to achieve the necessary surgical skills. Different training programs in colorectal surgery have been reported for the different surgical techniques analyzed. Most of these programs are based on training tools in the form of surgical simulators, physical and virtual, as well as the use of experimental and cadaveric models. However, structured training programs in minimally invasive colorectal surgery remain scarce, and there should be a consensus on the fundamental training aspects for the various surgical techniques presented. These training programs should ensure that surgeons acquire sufficient surgical skills to be competent in the development of these surgical techniques, improving the quality of the patient’s surgical outcomes.
Do tych drugich należą: endoskopowa chirurgia transanalna (TEM ), przezodbytowa chirurgia minimalnie inwazyjna (TAMIS), przezodbytowe całkowite wycięcie mezorektum (TaTME ) oraz chirurgia wspomagana robotowo.

Opis:
Background. To evaluate the outcomes of transiliac cerclage with Dall-Miles cable in the internal fixation of the posterior complex in unstable pelvic ring fractures between January 1995 and December 2014. Material and methods. A study of 42 men injured at work with an average age of 35.2 years (range, 23 to 61) was conducted. The mechanisms of injury were traffic accidents in 25 cases (59.5%), crushing accidents in 12 cases (28.6%), and fall from height in 5 cases (11.9%). Thirty-six cases were polytraumatized patients (85.7%). The patients were evaluated using Majeed’s functional score and Matta’s radiological criteria. Results. The average follow-up time was 135.8 ± 45.6 months. The clinical outcomes were excellent in 17 cases (40.5%), good in 19 cases (45.2%), fair in 5 cases (11.9%), and poor in 1 case (2.4%). The radiological outcomes were satisfactory in 32 cases (76.2%) and unsatisfactory in 10 cases (23.8%). All fractures were healed. The sequelae were 3 cases (7.2%) of lower limb dysmetria and 3 cases (7.2%) of chronic neuropathic pain. Conclusion. The internal fixation of the sacroiliac complex by Dall-Miles cable cerclage reinforced with small fragment plates should be considered as an alternative method for minimally invasive osteosynthesis in selected cases of unstable pelvic ring fractures.

Opis:
Some of the most recent technologies that improves the performance in continuous casting process has installed infrastructure outside the mold to modify the natural fluid flow pattern to obtain a quasi-steady condition and promote a uniform solidified shell of steel. The submerged entry nozzle distributes the liquid steel in the mold and can be used to obtain the flow symmetry condition with external geometry improvements. The fluid flow conditioners were located near the outlet ports of the nozzle. The aim of the modifiers is to impose a pseudo symmetric pattern in the upper zone of the mold by inhibiting the fluid exchange between the zones created by conditioners. This work evaluates the effect of the thickness and length of the fluid-flow modifiers on the overall performance of the submerged nozzle. These properties of the fluid-flow modifiers were normalized based on two of the geometric dimensions of the standard equipment. Numerical and physical simulations suggest that the flow modifier should be as thin as possible.

Opis:
We studied magnetic properties and GMI effect of Finemet-type FeCuNbSiB microwires. We observed that GMI effect and magnetic softness of microwires produced by the Taylor-Ulitovski technique, can be tailored by either controlling magnetoelastic anisotropy of as-prepared FeCuNbSiB microwires or controlling their structure by heat treatment or changing the fabrication conditions. GMI effect has been observed in as-prepared Fe-rich microwires with nanocrystalline structure.
