Opis:
Investigations of the photoluminescence of PbS-EuS superlattices deposited on (111)BaF$\text{}_{2}$ substrates are presented. Quantum-size and deformation effects in photoluminescence spectra are observed. The strain-induced gap shift and valence-band offset is determined from experimental results. A strong stimulated photoluminescence with relatively low threshold was observed. It was found that the photocarriers generated in EuS barrier strongly affect the population of PbS subbands.

Opis:
Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is a dangerous zoonosis which presents a serious problem for endangered species such as European bison (Bison bonasus). Little is known about the influence of parasitic co-infections on the course and diagnosis of tuberculosis in animals. The best known co-infection in cattle is Fasciola hepatica and Mycobacterium bovis. The aim of this study was to review the most recent literature regarding tuberculosis and parasite co-infection in ungulates and relate the results to European bison. Our findings indicate that any comprehensive diagnosis of BTB should include parasitological monitoring, and the possible impact of such invasions on cellular response-based tuberculosis tests should be taken into account. The diagnosis of BTB is complex, as is its pathogenesis, and parasitic infestations can have a significant impact on both. This should be taken into account during further research and monitoring of tuberculosis in European bison.

Opis:
Mössbauer spectroscopy is not routinely used for the determination of the concentration of iron. However, as this method does not need any pre-treatment of samples before measurements, it may be of extreme importance for the assessment of iron in samples, which can then be used for further investigations. Biological samples are a good example, however, as the concentrations of iron are very low in these, it is important to exclude possible artefacts from the background spectrum related to iron present in the counter and cryostat windows. The aim of this study was to compare two methods of determination of the amounts of iron in investigated sample: one, in which the background spectrum was subtracted from the sample spectrum measured, and the other, in which the obtained non-elaborated spectrum was fitted with two doublets – a doublet for the measured sample and a doublet for the background spectrum. Three samples containing known amounts of natural iron (400, 800 and 1600 µg) and a sample of lyophilized human brain tissue obtained from globus pallidus were assessed. Both methods led to the creation of a very good calibration curve with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. Although both methods gave similar results for the concentration of iron in the sample, the subtraction of the background spectrum had a significantly lower error of the final result.

Opis:
Contamination of soils artificially polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soils aged polluted with crude oil in the phytoremediation process were compared. The plant used in the tests was maize (Zea mays L.). In chamber tests with soils artificially polluted (chernozem, calcareous rendzina, and lessives), selected three PAHs (anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) were used at the doses of 100, 500, and 1000 mg·kg-1 d.m. of soil and diesel fuel at the doses of 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% (v/v). The soil naturally, aged polluted with crude oil chosen for the experiment was brown soil from crude oil refinery. Additionally, in the bioremediation process, the inoculation of plants with the mixture of bacteria strains Azospirillum and Pseudomonas stutzeri was used in the amount of 1 ml·500 g-1 of soil. Chamber pot-tests were carried out in controlled conditions (temperature, humidity) during four weeks of plant growth period. Physical properties of soils polluted with PAHs, diesel fuel, and crude oil and the degree of PAHs degradation were analyzed in the study. The amounts of anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were determined in soils artificially polluted and Σ15 PAHs in soils artificially polluted with diesel fuel, as well as in brown soil aged polluted with crude oil. The obtained results showed a statistically important increase in the physical properties of soils polluted with PAHs, diesel fuel, and crude oil compared with the control and also an important decrease in the content of PAHs in soils (both artificially and aged polluted) inoculated with Azospirillum and Pseudomonas stutzeri after maize growth. The bioremediation processes were especially intensive in calcareous rendzina artificially polluted with PAHs and in brown soil aged polluted with crude oil.
Badano wpływ kukurydzy (Zea mays L.) jako rośliny fitoremediacyjnej na rozkład substancji ropopochodnych w glebach naturalnie i sztucznie skażonych substan-cjami ropopochodnymi. W procesie bioremediacji dodatkowo zastosowano szczepienie roślin bakteriami Azospirillum spp. i Pseudomonas stutzeri. Oznaczono zawartość antracenu, fenantrenu i pirenu w glebach sztucznie skażonych oraz Σ15 WWA w przypadku skażenia gleb olejem napędowym i ropą naftową. Stwierdzono statystycznie istotne zmniejszenie za-wartości antracenu, fenantrenu i pirenu oraz Σ15 WWA w glebach zarówno sztucznie, jak i naturalnie skażonych substancjami ropopochodnymi w procesie fitoremediacji, szczególnie widoczne po zastosowaniu szczepienia roślin Azospirillum i Pseudomonas stutzeri. Szcze-pienie to pozytywnie oddziaływało na procesy rozkładu WWA w glebach sztucznie skażonych i w glebie naturalnie skażonej ropą naftową. Procesy bioremediacji zachodziły szczególnie intensywnie (wysoki stopień degradacji WWA) w rędzinie wapiennej i czarnoziemie skażonym WWA i olejem napędowym oraz w glebie brunatnej skażonej ropą naftową.

Opis:
Do badań wybrano 15 próbek glebowych z doświadczeń polowych z 1994 roku dotyczących uprawy jęczmienia jarego.
Glomalines are thermostable, water-insoluble glycoproteins abundantly produced by Glomus fungi and tends to accumulate in the soil, that surrounds soil aggregates and protects them from destroying. Glomalines are especially resistant to destruction, hard to dissolve in water, while very easy dissolve in high temperature (121°C) in citrate buffer with neutral or alkali pH. These proteins have very unique physico-chemical properties performing a fundamental role in making soil structure. The content of glomalin in soil particles is significantly correlated with their stability (water resistance). It is possible that glomalin is involved in the formation of hydrophobic properties of soil, improving water and air relations in soil. Glomalines are mainly located on the surface of hyphae and spores of AM (arbuscular mycorrhizal) fungi and a hydrophobic substances covers and protects it from the degradation by other microorganisms. It also increases the stiffness and the durability of the cell of fungi facilitating their distribution in the soil. Production and distribution of glomalin in soil involves many factors, both related to the physico-chemical properties of soil and plant and fungal species. The structure of soil and its chemical properties have a significant effect on the growth of mycelium, and therefore the glomalin content. Glomalins are very resistant to degradation. As aging hyphae outside the root and the roots of plants, biomass mycelium of AMF fungi is degraded – but not glomalin. This protein is unchanged is able to survive in the soil even decades. Glomalins commonly occur in different types of soils. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the presence of total and easy extractable glomalins in archival samples of soil from the collection of soil Department of Microbiology IUNG-PIB in Puławy. The study selected 20 soil samples from field trials in 1994 with the cultivation of barley. The soil samples survey from various Polish regions and represented different types of soils. Soils were characterized by different physical, chemical and biological properties. The studies carried out in this paper have shown the contents of glomalin in all soil samples. The concentration of total and easily extracted glomalin depend mainly on the type of soil. The presence of glomalin in soils confirms the hypothesis that these proteins are particularly resistant to degradation and can remain unchanged in the soil even decades.

Opis:
Motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease are caused by a progressive degeneration of substantia nigra, a small structure located deep in the brain. The cause of this process is unknown but may be related to iron mediated oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to understand the mechanism of the change of magnetic resonance and ultrasound signals found in patients with Parkinson's disease, which were attributed by several authors to an important increase of the concentration of iron in substantia nigra. USG and MRI measurements were performed on phantoms simulating human brain to which high amounts of iron were introduced. The USG signal was unaffected by insertion of iron-loaded ferritin, while it was by insertion of glial tissue. Injections of iron-loaded ferritin and iron ions to the phantoms decreased $T_2$ relaxation time. Our results suggest that the observed change of the signal from Parkinsonian brains is probably due to a proliferation of glia and not to an increase of the concentration of iron.

All over the world, including Poland, interest in the organic farming is growing. It is based on an attempt to minimize human impact on the environment while maintaining the natural functionality and productivity of the agricultural system. At the same time, every human activity in the natural environment results in greater or lesser changes in the soil ecosystem. Organic farming also has an impact on physical and chemical parameters and soil biological activity. These changes should be monitored and considered in the context of long-term land management. This review focuses on the impact of the organic farming system on soil biological activity and diversity of soil microorganisms.

Effects of different pre-planting soil preparations and post-harvest wood debris applications in a clear-cut Scots pine plantation, on the abundance, diversity, and activity of culturable microorganisms were investigated. The investigation was done 9 years after the re-plantings had been done. This formed part of an investigation of silvicultural practices for conservation and the biological control of Armillaria and Heterobasidion in northern temperate forests (Poland). The treatments being compared, were expected to have altered the soil’s physical and chemical properties, and consequently, its biological properties. Only soft-rot microfungi from the Ascomycota and Zygomycota were detected in the soil. Fungi, including those antagonistic to Armillaria and Heterobasidion, were more abundant after shallow ploughing than after deep ploughing or ridging, and where chipped rather than coarse wood debris was left on the soil surface or incorporated. Scots pine trees had the most biomass and the least mortality after ridging and leaving coarse wood debris on the surface (associated with only a relatively moderate abundance of fungi).

In addition, phenolic acids were identified in these grains, and the content of the identified acids, i.e. ferulic, vanillic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic, syringic, sinapic and caffeic, was determined. The antioxidant properties of phenolic acids were examined using the free radical scavenging method against a stable 2.2-diphenyl-1-pikrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). The antiradical efficiency of phenolic acids depended on the duration of a reaction and genotype-specific properties. The data showed that different winter cereal seed extracts were able to quench 15-47% of DPPH radical solution and to exhibit potent radical scavenging activity. Results of the determinations of the content of phenolic acids in grains of the cultivars correlated with the activity of their extracts. The tested cereal grains were characterized by different levels of the identified phenolic acids, depending on the generic and specific characteristics. Differences in the content of phenolic acids may be subject to genetic traits, environmental factors and different analytical procedures. Cereal kernels with a higher phenolic acid content also exhibited a higher antioxidant activity of extracts with these compounds. Kernels of winter barley cv. Metaxa with a higher content of phenolic acids were also characterized by higher antioxidant activity than those of cvs. Merle and Laverola. The lowest content of phenolic acids was observed in winter rye cv. The high pressure Bridgman technique was used to grow Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te:P crystals. Under the N$\text{}_{2}$ pressure of 30 atm., we obtained the p$\text{}^{+}$-Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te single crystals 8-10 mm in diameter, with free-carrier densities as high as p ≈ 8×10$\text{}^{18}$ cm$\text{}^{-3}$ and the room temperature conductivity σ(RT) ≈ 30 Ω$\text{}^{-1}$cm$\text{}^{-1}$. Magnetoresistance measurements were carried out down to 1.3 K and up to 6 T. In Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te:P a strong increase in the acceptor binding energy as well as an immense (ρ(0,1.3K)/ρ(6T,1.3K) > 10$\text{}^{3}$) negative magnetoresistance are observed, by contrast, not seen in diamagnetic ZnTe:P. It is shown that these effects come from the formation of bound magnetic polarons and their destruction by an external magnetic field.

Opis:
Without any doubt intensive and modern agriculture significantly increased efficiency and productivity of crop and animal production. It became possible mainly thanks to the widely used mineral fertilizers, crop protection chemicals such as pesticides, but also due to constantly developed new varieties of plants and breeds of animals that are more resistant to diseases and better adapted to cold, as well as mechanization of the agriculture. The crop and animal production would not be possible without the use of natural resources such as soil, water, air as well as land together with its ecosystems and biodiversity. The intensive and industrial agriculture might cause very serious environmental consequences and endanger natural resources from which we are dependent. Threat to the environment comes mainly from unsustainable use of these resources as well as overuse of agrochemicals which are the source of various pollution. Pesticides and fertilizers are not only a direct danger to the health of consumers, they might be a source of food contamination. They also importantly affect chemical properties of the soil by changing its pH, contaminate it with heavy metals and pesticide residues that often cumulate in the upper layers over decades and eventually leach to the ground waters. Extensive use of NPK fertilizers leads to the eutrophication of surface waters causing algae bloom in lakes threatening water ecosystems. Use of agricultural machinery and hi-tech equipment certainly increased the efficiency and productivity in the farm. However, it also caused decrease in employment in the rural areas. Works that were used to be performed by people nowadays are carried out by the machines. Furthermore, mechanization and use of heavy equipment lead to the soil erosion and cause changes in soil structure. Intensive agriculture is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases emissions. The greatest portion of methane comes from ruminant animals which are produced during digestive processes. Finally, industrial agriculture negatively influences biological diversity of rural and agricultural ecosystems. Intensive farming often favors large surface monocultures that significantly decrease biodiversity. The main goal of this review is to discuss how modern, unsustainable agriculture affect our environment, its specific components and natural resources.

Opis:
Mycorrhizal symbiosis is known since the 19th century and has been described as the coexistence of fungus with the roots of vascular plants. Root colonization by endomycorrhizal fungi causes changes in the quantity and quality of exudates produced by roots. The mycorrhiza may also affect plants’ health status, their competitiveness and succession in eco-systems, and the formation of soil aggregates. The presence of a symbiont in the roots of plants causes a direct and indirect effect on rhizosphere microorganisms, fixing free nitrogen and transforming compounds constituting nutrient substrates for plants. The physiological and morphological relations of AMF with the plant promote its vitality and competitiveness by increasing resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Effective activation of the plant immune responses may occur, not only locally but also systemically. Mycorrhizal fungi, through the change of the composition and amount of root exudates, have influence on the development and activity of the communities of soil microorganisms. Certain soil bio-controlling microorganisms frequently showing synergism of the protective effect on plants together with AMF. In some cases, however, no positive interaction of selected microorganisms and endomycorrhizal fungi is observed. Double inoculation with the some species of bacteria and the mycorrhizal fungus can cause a decrease in the yielding the plants. Mycoparasitism of AMF spores and hyphae is also encountered in interaction between saprophytic fungi and AMF. This phenomenon is based on the lytic abilities of some fungi species which can lower the level of colonization and the effectiveness of mycorrhizal symbiosis with plants. Good knowledge of plant symbiosis with endomycorrhizal fungi and activity of these fungi in soils is necessary for their use in plant production.
