    This paper aims to determine the Balkan features of the Roumanian subjunctive mood. The Balkanism is defined here as a linguistic unit which is peculiar to languages of the southeastern Europe, but does not characterize any other Indo-European language. In comparison with the subjunctive mood in French (and in other Western Romance languages), the Roumanian subjunctive mood can be considered a Balkanism. The features which unite it to the subjunctive mood in Albanian and Modern Greek (its frequency, its predominant syntactic nature and its null semantic invariant) are favourable to such classification.

    This paper introduces the necessary modifications and supplements to the work Verbal Inflection in Romanian, published in 1999 by the same author. The main modifications are: a new phonological inventory applied to the morphological analysis, a new unctional definition of the subjunctive mood, the elimination of the infinitive from the inflectional system, a new type of inflectional root distinguished - extended root, a new set of affixes. They refer to all the inflectional phenomena and cause many minor changes of formal and functional nature.

    This paper, that is part of a bigger research project concerning the morphonology of the standard contemporary Romanian, concentrates on the irregular vocalic alternations in the Romanian verbal inflection. Seventeen of the twenty-four possible alternations are irregular. The context in which the alternant members appear is analysed precisely according to the units that follow and precede them. The analysis shows that six of all the alternations are only morphologically conditioned. The e ~ a alternation acquires the categorial function in the structure of three verbs.

    This paper continues and implements several other ones concerning the morphonology of the standard contemporary Romanian. It analyzes all the alternations which appear in the structure of the inflectional root according to seven criteria: (1) phonological status of the alternating terms, (2) phonological process realized by the alternation, (3) factors conditioning the alternation, (4) grammatical domain in which the alternation occurs, (5) regularity of the alternation, (6) its productiveness and (7) its functions.

    This paper presents the results of a detailed analysis of the Roumanian nominal inflectional root. Its aim is to describe the morphonological types of root and their syntagmatic relevance. In this way, seven relevant types of the nominal inflectional root are defined according to its final phonological segments: unmarked vowel root, /u/ root, unmarked consonant root, /j/ root, consonant+liquid consonant root, palatal consonant root and velar consonant root.

    To what extent are the Romanian and the Albanian inflection convergents?This paper presents the results of a short contrastive analysis of functional inflection in the contemporary Romanian and Albanian. Its aim is to determine convergences between these two languages on a highly general level. Nine morphological categories (number, person, gender, case, determination, voice, aspect, mode and tense) with all their main values are described here in each variable lexical class of both the Romanian and the Albanian language. Such a treatment of two corresponding lingusitic subsystems clearly demonstrates that differences overcome similarities, and supposed balkanisms are dubious on this level. W jakim stopniu zbieżne są fleksja rumuńska i fleksja albańska?W artykule przedstawiono wyniki wstępnej analizy kontrastywnej, obejmującej fleksję funkcjonalną współczesnych języków rumuńskiego i albańskiego. Podstawowym celem jest tu określenie, na bardzo ogólnym poziomie, zbieżności między tymi językami. Pod uwagę wzięto dziewięć kategorii morfologicznych (liczba, osoba, rodzaj, przypadek, określoność, strona, aspekt, tryb i czas) wraz z ich prymarnymi wartościami w każdej odmiennej klasie leksykalnej, tak rumuńskiej, jak i albańskiej. Takie potraktowanie odpowiadających sobie dwu językowych podsystemów wykazuje wprost, że różnice przeważają tu nad podobieństwami, a przypuszczalne bałkanizmy są na tym poziomie raczej wątpliwe.

    Stem morphophonology in Romanian paradigmatic derivatives: alternations and their functions Paradigmatic derivation is one of the basic word formation processes in Romanian. The aim of this paper is a characterization of its formal exponents. The work is founded on a previously realized analysis of the derivational stem in several thousands of cases of conversion and back-formation. In the analyzed stems there is mostly no morphophonological change. Alternations only occur in a particular class of feminine substantives and in some back derivatives. Those are the alternations which take place in the whole morphophonological system. Nearly each of them may be treated as constituents of compound paradigm-alternation formatives. Morfonologia tematu rumuńskich derywatów paradygmatycznych. Alternacje i ich funkcjeCelem niniejszego artykułu jest charakterystyka formalnych wykładników derywacji paradygmatycznej w języku rumuńskim, która jest dlań jednym z podstawowych procesów słowotwórczych. Praca oparta jest na wcześniej dokonanej analizie tematu słowotwórczego w kilku tysiącach przypadków konwersji i derywacji wstecznej. W temacie tym przeważnie nie dochodzi do zmian morfonologicznych. Alternacje mają miejsce tylko w określonej grupie rzeczowników żeńskich i w niektórych derywatach wstecznych. Są to alternacje wykorzystywane w całym systemie morfonologicznym. Prawie wszystkie mogą być interpretowane jako składniki złożonych formantów paradygmatyczno-alternacyjnych.

    The paper confronts two models of the Romanian morphonological system. The first one is a complete set of alternations, which are based on three essential relations of purely formal opposition. These are 83 alternations that are even more subdivided, mainly by the criterion of their direction. The second one is made up of 117 morphonemes derived from directional alternations and is based on qualitative, quantitative and distributional opposition relations. Wider use can be achieved by a system of morphonemes, above all thanks to a strict way of defining the constituent units and their simple representation.

    En se basant sur une analyse préalable des quelques centaines de lexèmes, le présent article essaie d’identifier les marques pertinentes des traits morphosyntaxiques dans la flexion substantivale roumaine et d’établir leur conditionnement morphonologique. Après avoir présenté les cadres généraux de la flexion du type réalisationnel, l’article se concentre sur les allomorphes affixaux, les morphèmes superposés et les alternants du radical flexionnel pour pouvoir conclure que les marques morphologiques principales sont les auxiliaires et les postfixes, à côté des marques secondaires – les désinences et les alternants du radical. Les marques les plus conditionnées par le contexte morphonologique sont les désinences.
    Based on the previous analysis of a few hundred lexemes, the present article tries to identify the relevant markers of morphosyntactic features in Romanian substantival inflection and to establish their morphophonemic conditioning. After presenting the general frameworks of the realizational type of inflection, the article focuses on affix allomorphs, superimposed morphemes and the alternants of the inflectional stem and concludes that the main morphological markers are auxiliaries and postfixes, next to the secondary markers – endings and the alternants of the stem. The markers most conditioned by the morphophonemic context are the endings.
