The phosphosilicate for planar waveguides fabrication by using sol-gel, and particularly erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers, is reviewed. In particular, efforts to use sol-gel to improve molecular homogeneity in Er-doped phosphosilicate-based monolith and thin films will be discussed. A variety of material studies was carried out to investigate and optimize the sample preparation condition for such application. These include X-ray diffraction, the Fourier transform infrared and optical transmittance, absorption and refractive index calculation. The erbium nitrate precursors use is shown to alter the Er³⁺ ions doping in the prepared samples thermally treated in the final monolith glass form, in comparison to the use of thin film phosphosilicate sol-gel sample. Excess heat treatment is used to force prepared samples crystallization, moreover resulting photoluminescence analysis is used to detect the co-operative-up-conversion sample properties before and after heating.

High temperature stress can be detrimental to plants, resulting in reduced fruit yield and increased incidences of fruit disorders. One strategy that farmers can use to maintain or increase their yields in the face of a changing climate is to adjust of farm climate by using shade net on the trees. Such, the use of shade netting on Washington navel orange planted on the sandy soil in Al-Nubaria region, Egypt were studied during two successive seasons, either using a permanent shade throughout all the season or using a moveable shade for certain period from the first of March until the end of June for every season. Growth (No. of shoots/one meter branch, No. of leaves/shoot, shoot length and chlorophyll content of the leaves, leaf area and tree canopy), macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na) content in the leaves, fruit characteristics (number, weight, diameter, peel thickness, total soluble solids, total acidity and ascorbic acid), yield and crop efficiency, were determined. It can be concluded that covering Washington navel orange trees grown on sandy soil with shade net especial covering the trees for certain period was very effective at protecting orange trees and led to improve the growth, increase the yield and maintain fruit quality.

Opis:
The removal of benzene (B) and toluene (T) from aqueous solution by multi walled, single walled, and hybrid carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, SWCNTs, and HCNTs) was evaluated for a nanomaterial dose of 1 g/l, concentration of 10-100 mg/l, and pH 7. The equilibrium amount removed by SWCNTs (B: 9.98 mg/g and T: 9.96 mg/g) was higher than for MWCNTs and HCNTs. Toluene has a higher adsorption tendency on CNTs than benzene, which is related to the increasing water solubility and the decreasing molecular weight of the compounds. The SWCNTs performed better for B and T sorption than the MWCNTs and HCNTs. Isotherms study based on isofit program indicate that the Generalized Langmuir-Freundlich (GLF) isotherm expression provides the best fit for benzene sorption, and that Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm is the best fit for toluene adsorption by SWCNT. SWCNTs are efficient B and T adsorbents and possess good potential applications to water and wastewater treatment and maintain water of high quality that could be used for cleaning up environmental pollution.

Opis:
The main purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of variables to the sustainable livelihood status of char women. The sustainable livelihood status of a char woman was measured by computing a “sustainable livelihood status score” which is considering six major aspects of her livelihoods: food security, ability to provide family education, health and sanitation, shelter and family assets, clothing condition and social upliftment. Data were collected from 200 randomly selected char women by using interview schedule in two Upazilla of Jamalpur district in Bangladesh during November 2006 to March 2007. More than two-fifths (67.5 per cent) of the char women were found under “medium sustainable livelihood status” compared to more than one-fifth (20.5 per cent) of them belongs to ‘low sustainable livelihood status’ and only 12 per cent to “high sustainable livelihood status”. Pearson correlation test depicted that out of 16 variables, 13 had significant positive relationships with the sustainable livelihood status. Results of stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that five variables namely, annual income, agricultural knowledge, income generating activities, family education and organizational participation contributed significantly which combindly explained 76.3 per cent of total variation to the sustainable livelihood status. Path analysis indicated that these variables had both direct and indirect effects to the sustainable livelihood status. Women who had more annual income, better agricultural knowledge, participation in income generating activities, more family education and more organizational participation were found to better sustainable livelihood status in char area. Government or concern other authorities need to give attention to these variables for any sustainable livelihood upliftment programme.
Dane do badania pochodzą z wywiadu przeprowadzonego w okresie od listopada 2006 roku do marca 2007 roku wśród 200 losowo wybranych kobiet z terenów zalewowych z dwóch dystryktów Bangladeszu: Upazila i Jamalpur.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Respiratory insufficiency and failure are leading causes of ICU admissions. Advances in medical technology allow prolonging of survival in critical illnesses. Hence, more tracheostomies are being performed. However, we are limited in predicting who may actually benefit. Our goal was to determine prognostic indicators of early mortality after tracheostomy in order to avoid futile procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study utilizing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database on all adults who underwent tracheostomy between 2005 and 2015. We defined futile tracheostomy as death within 30 days post tracheostomy during the same hospital admission. Univariate and multivariate testing were performed on the weighted dataset. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated with multivariate logistic regression testing. RESULTS: 851,020 cases met the inclusion criteria. Rate of futility was 12.4% (n=105,658). Total hospitalization cost was greater in the futile group as compared to non-futile group. On Multivariate testing, male gender, age greater than 65, 3 Elixhauser mortality index categories, Asian/Pacific Islander and other race, self-pay and no charge insurance, septicemia and mechanical ventilation greater than 96 hours were independent risk factors to predict futility. Among these, septicemia was the greatest risk for futility (OR 2.32), followed by Elixhauser mortality index >10 (OR 1.954), and Elixhauser mortality index between 3 and 10 (OR 1.468). CONCLUSIONS: Between 2005 and 2015, 12.4% of tracheostomies could be considered futile. Targeted efforts are needed to decrease the number of unnecessary procedures in the critically ill. We should consider the identified risk factors to share more informed discussions with patients and families to set better long-term expectations and realistic goals for care.
Ilorazy szans (OR) obliczono za pomocą wieloczynnikowych testów regresji logistycznej. WYNIKI: 851,020 przypadków spełniło kryteria włączenia. Wskaźnik daremności wyniósł 12.4% (n = 105,658). Całkowity koszt hospitalizacji był większy w grupie daremnej w porównaniu z grupą nie-daremną. W testach wielowymiarowych, płeć męska, wiek powyżej 65, trzy kategorie wskaźnika śmiertelności Elixhausera, rasy azjatyckie / wyspiarskie i inne rasy, samodzielne i bezpłatne ubezpieczenie, posocznica i wentylacja mechaniczna dłuższa niż 96 godzin były niezależnymi czynnikami ryzyka, które wskazywały na daremność. Pośród tych przypadków posocznica była największym ryzykiem daremności (OR 2.32), a następnie wskaźnik śmiertelności Elixhausera > 10 (OR 1.954), oraz Wskaźnik śmiertelności Elixhausera między 3 a 10 (OR 1.468).

Opis:
Traditionally, pavement distress evaluations were carried out by visual observation. Traditional practice requires a person to walk along the stretch of the pavement to conduct distress survey, take photo and measure defects occurred at deteriorated surfaces. However, this approach is too subjective, generates inconsistencies of information, less reliable and time-consuming. Due to these shortcomings, the transportation practitioners in pavement maintenance seek for other alternative tools and techniques to arrest incapability of traditional practices. One of the tools available in the market is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). GPR is a geophysical tool known by ability to accommodate extensive data in pavement assessment, geotechnical investigation and structural assessment. The application of GPR is such new to most of road maintenance industry in Malaysia. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to evaluate the benefits of using GPR imaging and its application in assessing pavement structures in Malaysia. The GPR survey was conducted in Meranti street located at UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) campus, and then analyzed using REFLEX 2D simulation software. The finding shows there are three (3) types of information obtained from GPR survey included; identification of raw image and processed image, identification of pavement segments thickness, and identification of GPR response towards surface and subsurface conditions, which illustrated in radargram images. Furthermore, the GPR can perform at high speed and can save time. It is also beneficial for long-term investment due to ability to provide extensive information at a greater depth. The research indicates that interpretation of GPR’s radargram images consumes time due to the low resolution. Therefore, selection of GPR system is subject to level of accuracy and clarity of radar images needed in a project.

Electricity generation from the readily biodegradable organic substrate (glucose) accompanied by decolorization of azo dye was investigated using a two-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC). Batch experiments were conducted to study the effect of dye and substrate concentration on MFC performance. Electricity generation was not signifi cantly affected by the azo dye at 300 mg/L, while higher concentrations inhibited electricity generation. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and decolorization of dye containing wastewater used in the MFC were studied at optimum operation conditions in anode and cathode, 57% COD removal and 70% dye removal were achieved. This study also demonstrated the effect of different catholyte solutions, such as KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 on electricity generation. As a result, KMnO4 solution showed the maximum electricity generation due to its higher standard reduction potential.

Early maturing peach (Prunus persica) cultivars can fetch good market value but face a lot of post-harvest problems that lead to the post-harvest losses. The 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) can provide new insights into plant ethylene responses and extend the shelf life and quality of fruits. Therefore, fruits of peach cultivar ‘Early Grand’ were dipped in various concentrations of 1-MCP (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 µg l–1), stored for 40 days at 8 ±2°C with 50% relative humidity and analyzed the fruits for physicochemical attributes at 10 days interval. The highest concentration of 1-MCP at 0.9 µg l–1 significantly improved the activity of antioxidants, catalase, free radical scavenging assay and total phenols. However, the peach fruits treated with 1MCP at 0.6 µgL–1 was effective in retaining the ascorbic acid, lowering the weight loss and fruit decay. Therefore, peach fruits can be treated with 1-MCP (0.6 µg l–1) solution for prolonging its shelf life up to 40 days under low temperature.

The study evaluated the adsorption potential of white cedar sawdust (WCS) for dye removal. WCS was chosen from five preferred, abundant waste biomasses from Pakistan. Various parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dose, dye concentration, pH, and particle size were optimized for methylene blue (MB) dye adsorption. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX and BET analyses. The surface area of the adsorbent was 1.43 m2·g-1 and pore volume was 0.000687 cm3·g-1. The adsorption data best fitted the isotherm models of Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Freundlich. The maximum experimental adsorption capacity obtained was 55.15 mg·g-1, which was in close agreement to the calculated adsorption capacity. Fitness of the pseudo-second order kinetics suggested chemisorption as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic study for adsorption was carried out to evaluate the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°). The negative values ΔG° at the examined temperature range confirmed the spontaneous adsorption of MB onto WCS.

Opis:
Global agriculture is a pivotal activity performed by various communities worldwide to produce essential human food needs. Plant productivity is limited by several factors, such as salinity, water scarcity, and heat stress. Salinity significantly causes short or long-term impacts on the plant photosynthesis mechanisms by reducing the photosynthetic rate of CO2 assimilation and limiting the stomatal conductance. Moreover, disturbing the plant water status imbalance causes plant growth inhibition. Up-regulation of several plant phytohormones occurs in response to increasing soil salt concentration. In addition, there are different physiological and biochemical mechanisms of salt tolerance, including ion transport, uptake, homeostasis, synthesis of antioxidant enzymes, and osmoprotectants. Besides that, microorganisms proved their ability to increase plant tolerance, Bacillus spp. represents the dominant bacteria of the rhizosphere zone, characterised as harmless microbes with extraordinary abilities to synthesise many chemical compounds to support plants in confronting salinity stress. In addition, applying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a promising method to decrease salinity-induced plant damage as it could enhance the growth rate relative to water content. In addition, there is a demand to search for new salt-tolerant crops with more yield and adaptation to unfavourable environmental conditions. The negative impact of salinity on plant growth and productivity, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and changes in plant phytohormones biosynthesis, including abscisic acid and salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, cytokinins, gibberellins, and brassinosteroids was discussed in this review. The mechanisms evolved to adapt and/or survive the plants, including ion homeostasis, antioxidants, and osmoprotectants biosynthesis, and the microbial mitigate salt stress. In addition, there are modern approaches to apply innovative methods to modify plants to tolerate salinity, especially in the essential crops producing probable yield with a notable result for further optimisation and investigations.
