    The paper seeks to elaborate on the competitive advantage of supply chains from the perspective of networking that is employed in a twofold sense. First, it is used to explore the issue of network competitive advantage, which is considered to deliver benefits to all major actors constituting the supply chains, while in the second sense networking is brought to demonstrate whether actors, as well as relationships formed by these actors, possess the necessary characteristics to deliver the network competitive advantage. Based on this conceptual reasoning, we then deliver theoretical propositions that assist in deeper understanding of how the network characteristics of supply chains can contribute to deriving the network competitive advantage of supply chains. Specifically, the study shows that most of these characteristics have a positive impact on the value of network rent. Likewise, the paper also points out that the specific characteristics of networking are mutually interdependent and remain in intermeshing and overlapping relationships. As a consequence, the independent variables, when considered holistically, may mutually interact in such a way that they may produce contradictory outcomes.

    Background: Recent studies in the domain of supply chain management underline the significance of the contractual and relational aspects of governance, at the same time ignoring the relevance of classical hierarchy. To respond to this challenge, our study posits that the market and hierarchy are both embedded in the wider social context, and as such they can only apply to some degree of relational aspects, referred in this research to as clan. Concomitantly, clan rarely acts as a sole mode of supply chain governance; quite the contrary, it can be either a hybrid (anchored between market and hierarchy) or an alternative (neither market nor hierarchy) mode of governance. By returning to the classical roots of governance of market and hierarchy as two bipolar modes, the goal of the paper is to compare diverse modes of supply chain governance (with the emphasis on the hybrid and alternative modes) in terms of the strength of clan. Methods: The study involves two stages of multivariate statistical analysis. In the first step, the variables indicating certain modes of market and hierarchy of upstream and downstream dyads were narrowed down to the main underlying multi-item constructs through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax Rotation. In the second step of the analysis, the factor scores obtained through the PCA for market and hierarchical governance were used in cluster analysis. Results: The study reveals that the hybrid modes of governance (especially relational governance) anchored between bipolar modes of market and hierarchy demonstrate a higher portion of clan in comparison to hierarchy as the sole mode of governance in triadic supply chains. At the same time, triadic supply chains run by both market and hybrid governance do not differ from each other, as they indicate similar and significantly higher mean ranks for clan. The study reveals that the alternative (neither market nor hierarchical) modes of governance do not indicate higher portion of clan as compared to market and hierarchy as two sole modes of governance in triadic supply chains. Conclusions: The study shows that as the mode of governance clan takes a leading role in the hybrid modes of governance as compared to the alternative mechanisms. This may suggest that either the hybrid modes are much stronger enhanced by social dimensions encapsulated in clan than the alternative modes or the essence of clan in the hybrid modes is not the same as the essence of clan in the alternative modes of governance. Consequently, we conclude that the silver bullet for solving this problem may reside within the nature of clan, which is significantly different in both modes of governance.
    Wstęp: Ostatnie publikacje dotyczące zarządzania łańcuchem dostaw podkreślają znaczenie kontraktowej i relacyjnej koordynacji działań, jednocześnie ignorując istotność koordynacji hierarchicznej. W celu sprostania temu wyzwaniu artykuł zakłada, że zarówno koordynacja rynkowa, jak i hierarchiczna są osadzone w kontekście społecznym, i jako takie, w pewnym stopniu stosują aspekty relacyjne, określane w tym artykule mianem klanu. Jednocześnie, klan rzadko występuje jako samodzielny mechanizm koordynacji działań, przeciwnie może przyjmować postać formę hybrydy (osadzonej między rynkiem i hierarchią) lub może być mechanizmem alternatywnym (nie rynkowym i zarazem nie hierarchicznym). Poprzez nawiązanie do klasycznej koordynacji rynkowej i hierarchicznej, celem artykułu jest porównanie różnych mechanizmów koordynacji działań w łańcuchu dostaw (w tym przede wszystkim mechanizmu hybrydowego i alternatywnego) ze względu na siłę aspektów relacyjnych, zakotwiczonych w klanie. Metody: W artykule przeprowadzono dwa etapy wielowymiarowej analizy statystycznej. W pierwszym etapie zmienne odzwierciedlające mechanizm rynkowy i hierarchiczny oddzielnie dla obu diad, zostały zredukowane za pomocą analizy czynnikowej z rotacją varimax w celu identyfikacji podstawowych konstruktów. W drugim etapie badania, otrzymane oceny czynnikowe zostały wykorzystane w grupowaniu obiektów. Wyniki: Przeprowadzone badanie pokazuje, że hybrydowa koordynacja działań (w szczególności mechanizm relacyjny), osadzona między dwoma biegunowymi mechanizmami rynku i hierarchii wykazuje wyższy stopień wykorzystania aspektów relacyjnych, typowych dla klanu, aniżeli hierarchia, stosowana jako jedyny mechanizm w triadycznych łańcuchach dostaw. Jednocześnie, triadyczne łańcuchy dostaw koordynowane za pomocą mechanizmu rynkowego i hybrydowego nie różnią się istotnie, pokazując podobne wartości średnie rang dla klanu. Badanie pokazuje również, że alternatywne (nie rynkowe i zarazem nie hierarchiczne) mechanizmy koordynacji działań nie wskazują wyższych wartości średnich rang dla klanu w porównaniu do mechanizmu rynkowego i hybrydowego. Wnioski: Badanie pokazuje, że klan pełni przewodnią rolę w koordynacji hybrydowej w porównaniu do alternatywnych mechanizmów koordynacji. Może to sugerować, że albo koordynacja hybrydowa jest wzbogacona aspektami relacyjnymi, typowymi dla klanu, w porównaniu do alternatywnych mechanizmów koordynacji, albo istota klanu w koordynacji hybrydowej nie jest tożsama z istotą klanu w alternatywnych mechanizmach koordynacyjnych. W świetle powyższego, rozwiązanie tego problemu może wynikać z natury klanu, który istotnie różni się w obu mechanizmach koordynacji działań w łańcuchach dostaw.

    W artykule podjęto problematykę zależności występującej między zarządzaniem łańcuchem dostaw i logistyką, posiłkując się dwoma skrajnymi poglądami reprezentowanymi przez tradycjonalizm i unionizm. Według pierwszego podejścia zarządzanie łańcuchem dostaw jest częścią składową logistyki, podczas gdy unionizm podkreśla odwrotną zależność, zgodnie z którą to logistyka jest komponentem zarządzania łańcuchem dostaw. Mimo wzajemnej sprzeczności — przyjęcie każdego z wyróżnionych stanowisk interpretacyjnych jest silnie uargumentowane w literaturze przedmiotu. Celem artykułu jest próba przełamania napięcia występującego między wyróżnionymi, z pozoru opozycyjnymi, stanowiskami poznawczymi. W realizacji tak sformułowanego celu posłużono się tradycyjną metodyką studiów literaturowych, opartą na przeglądzie narracyjnym. Założono, że wspomniane napięcie przyjmuje formę paradoksu, który może zostać rozstrzygnięty na gruncie podejścia dialektycznego, osadzonego w diadzie teoria-praktyka. W związku z tym przywołano podstawowy model kategoryzacji nauk o zarządzaniu, wyróżniający nurt teoretyczny i praktyczny. Na tej podstawie podjęto próbę syntezy, umożliwiającą jednoczesne łączenie obu przeciwstawnych poglądów.
    The paper depicts the relationship between supply chain management and logistics, using two extreme views represented by traditionalism and unionism. The first one postulates that supply chain management is the component of logistics, while the latter one underscores the reverse relationship highlighting that logistics is the part of supply chain. Despite their mutual contradictions, there is a robust prerequisites to employ each of the views. The paper seeks to mitigate a cognitive tension distinguished between two, seemingly opposed perspectives. Having assumed that the tension takes the form of paradox, the dialectic approach anchored in the theory-practice dyad is used. Therefore, a basic typology of management science distinguishing the theoretical and practical stream is developed, followed by the attempt of synthesis of two opposed views.

    Jedną z istotnych przesłanek kształtowania powiązań sieciowych w łańcuchu dostaw jest koncentracja podmiotów (tzw. uczestników głównych) na kluczowych kompetencjach i zlecanie pozostałych usług podmiotom trzecim (usługodawcom). W rezultacie między ogniwami łańcucha dostaw dochodzi do nawiązania relacji wielokrotnych, z kilkoma podmiotami jednocześnie. W literaturze przedmiotu do zilustrowania relacji sieciowych w łańcuchu dostaw wykorzystuje się koncepcję triady. Niemniej obraz ten ma na ogół charakter statyczny, nie ukazuje bowiem rzeczywistej dynamiki formowania takiej relacji w świetle teorii kapitału społecznego, w centrum której znajduje się struktura triadyczna. Celem artykułu jest rozpoznanie i omówienie etapów dynamiki wyłaniania powiązań sieciowych w łańcuchu dostaw za pomocą przechodniej triady sfery usług. Triada przechodnia obejmuje trzy podmioty (dostawcę, odbiorcę oraz usługodawcę), które nawiązują między sobą trzy powiązania diadyczne.
    One of the key prerequisites for establishing the network connections in a supply chain is the focus of primary members on core competencies and outsourcing remaining services to the service providers. As a result, the multiple relationships with several actors are established. In the literature, to illustrate the network relationships in a supply chain, the concept of transitive triads has been often employed. Nonetheless, this framework is rather static, as it does not derive the real dynamics of forming the network relationship in the light of the social capital theory for which the concept of triad is a key issue. The paper aims to reveal and describe the stages of forming the network relationships in a supply chain with the use of transitive service triad. The transitive triad encompasses three actors that establish the dyadic relationships between one another. As a result, the transitive triad is formed by three dyadic arrangements.

    Łańcuchy dostaw są organizacjami złożonymi i pełnymi paradoksów, które można rozumieć na różne sposoby. Stąd wiele koncepcji związanych z kształtowaniem i funkcjonowaniem łańcuchów dostaw wywodzi się z określonych metafor. Niektóre z nich prowadzą do znanych sposobów myślenia, inne natomiast sprzyjają rozwijaniu nowych poglądów i interpretacji łańcucha dostaw. Jedne mogą odnosić się do całej organizacji, podczas gdy inne mogą uwypuklać pewien jej komponent lub dotyczyć określonego aspektu funkcjonowania. Metafory mogą być również użytecznym instrumentem poznania złożonej i wieloaspektowej problematyki rezylientnego łańcucha dostaw, czyli takiego, który zachowuje ciągłość operacyjną dzięki umiejętności radzenia sobie z niepewnością, a więc odznacza się zdolnością do osiągania nowego stanu w wyniku wystąpienia zakłóceń. W artykule podjęto próbę rozpoznania mechanizmu funkcjonowania rezylientnego łańcucha dostaw, wykorzystując podejście multimetaforyczne. W tym celu posłużono się metaforami charakterystycznymi dla paradygmatu neopozytywistycznego. W dalszej części artykułu zaprezentowano płaszczyzny interpretacyjne rezylientnych łańcuchów dostaw, przedstawiono rolę metafor w objaśnianiu rzeczywistości organizacyjnej, a następnie wyjaśniono poszczególne fragmenty rzeczywistości rezylientnego łańcucha dostaw przez pryzmat metafory organizacji jako organizmu, przepływu i transformacji, struktury dyssypatywnej oraz mózgu.
    Supply chains are complex structures full of paradoxes that can be understood in different ways. Thus, many concepts related to supply chain formation and operation originate from specific metaphors. Some of them lead to well-known ways of thinking, whereas others contribute to the development of new ideas and interpretations of supply chain. Certain metaphors may refer to an entire organization, while others may emphasize one of its components, or concern a specific operational aspect. Metaphors may also be a useful instrument for learning about complex and multi-dimensional problems of resilient supply chain, i.e. supply chain that maintains operational continuity thanks to its ability to handle uncertainty, and thus is characterised by the capability of achieving a new status in consequence of disruptions. The paper attempts to identify the operational mechanism of resilient supply chain, using the multi- metaphor approach. For this purpose, metaphors characteristic for the neopositivist paradigm were applied. Following the summary, the paper depicts the interpretative fields of resilient supply chains, the role of metaphors in explaining the organizational reality, and then explains particular elements of reality of a resilient supply chain through the metaphor of organization as an organism, flux and transformation, dissipative structure and brain.

    The goal of the research is twofold. First, it aims to reveal the basic modes of governance run by the manufacturer across the examined triadic supply chains. Secondly, the paper compares the groups of triadic supply chains, applying certain modes of governance, including network governance, in terms of the relational benefits and supply chain performance. To investigate the relationship between network governance and the supply chain performance, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax Rotation was used, followed by the cluster analysis and non-parametric tests. The study showed that the triadic supply chains significantly differentiate in terms of the modes of governance. Further findings also indicated that the triadic supply chains that follow the network governance mode consider their performance to be significantly higher in comparison to the supply chains that do not run this type of governance mechanism. Firstly, the research showed that it is difficult to unequivocally reveal the pure mechanisms of governance, undistorted by the influence of another distinct mode in the triadic supply chains. On the contrary, they are more or less influenced by other modes of governance distinguished in the literature. Likewise, it is also important to highlight that the mechanism of governance is inseparably bound with a certain dyadic relationship established between two actors in the wider structure of supply chains. The study also showed that incorporating a clan as a social mechanism of governance together with a market and hierarchy results in increasing the relational benefits and overall performance for both dyads in the triadic supply chains.

    Background: Leveraging the relational embeddedness perspective, we empirically investigate whether hybrid governance (perceived as a combination of market and hierarchy), and the alternate modes of governance (non-market and non-hierarchal) are capable of providing the social layer to governance within the three-tier supply chain framework. Methods: The study covers two research stages. In the first stage, the variables that demonstrate two modes of formal governance (both market and hierarchy) are reduced through the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight the main underlying multi-item factors. In the second stage of our research, the cluster analysis is conducted to compare different clusters in terms of relational embeddedness. As our research is exploratory in nature, we used non-parametric tests to evaluate the significance of results. Results: The results evidence that that along with the pure mechanisms of supply chain governance (market and hierarchy), one may also identify both the hybrid and alternate modes. It corresponds to four clusters embracing three-tier supply chains with different governance mechanisms: the alternate mode, market, hybrid and hierarchy. Likewise, the study shows that both market and hybrid governance demonstrate the strongest relational embeddedness of both dyads. On the other hand, though the alternate mode of governance, perceived as neither market nor hierarchy, demonstrates stronger relational embeddedness than pure hierarchy, nevertheless the strength of its relational embeddedness is significantly lower as compared to market governance. Conclusions: The study shows that it is difficult to reveal clearly delineated tendencies regarding both the hybrid and alternate modes of governance in terms of relational embeddedness. In fact, the hybrid mode of governance should be rather linked to market as they both are very similar, while the alternate mode of governance demonstrates a moderate strength of relational embeddedness. On the other hand, the lowest strength of relational embeddedness is still reported by hierarchy.
    Wstęp: Artykuł podejmuje próbę zbadania czy hybrydowe (postrzegane jako kombinacja rynku i hierarchii) oraz alternatywne (nierynkowe i niehierarchiczne) mechanizmy koordynacji umożliwiają wyłonienie aspektu społecznego, wzbogacającego proces regulacji działań wielopodmiotowych w triadycznych łańcuchach dostaw. Metody: W warstwie empirycznej badania obejmują dwa etapy. W pierwszym etapie dokonano redukcji zmiennych manifestujących dwa formalne mechanizmy koordynacji działań wielopodmiotowych (rynek i hierarchię) za pomocą analizy głównych składowych. W kolejnym etapie badania przeprowadzono analizę skupień w celu porównania zróżnicowanych grup łańcuchów dostaw ze względu na zakorzenienie relacyjne. W celu identyfikacji poziomu istotności w artykule wykorzystano nieparametryczne testy statystyczne. Wyniki: Badanie pokazało, że obok stricto rynkowych i hierarchicznych mechanizmów koordynacji działań w badanych łańcuchach dostaw występują również mechanizmy hybrydowe i alternatywne. Korespondują one ze zidentyfikowanymi czterema grupami łańcuchów dostaw. Ponadto, rynkowy, jak i hybrydowy mechanizm koordynacji wyróżnia najwyższy stopień zakorzenienia relacyjnego obu diad w badanych strukturach triadycznych. Z drugiej strony, mimo że alternatywny mechanizm koordynacji, postrzegany jako nierynkowy i niehierarchiczny, wskazuje wyższy stopień zakorzenienia relacyjnego w stosunku do mechanizmu hierarchicznego, to jednak siła jego zakorzenienia relacyjnego jest istotnie niższa w stosunku do zakorzeniania relacyjnego wskazywanego przez mechanizm rynkowy. Podsumowanie: Przeprowadzone badania pokazują, że trudno jest praktycznie wskazać określone tendencje dotyczące zarówno hybrydowego, jak i alternatywnego mechanizmu koordynacji działań wielopodmiotowych w kontekście zakorzenienia relacyjnego diad w strukturach triadycznych. Niemniej, hybrydowy mechanizm koordynacji powinien być raczej łączony z mechanizmem rynkowym, z kolei, alternatywny mechanizm koordynacji pokazuje umiarkowaną, a mechanizm hierarchiczny najniższą siłę zakorzenienia relacyjnego.

    Background: Although extant studies have highlighted the importance of specific demand planning practices in risk mitigation, there is a scarcity of research that shows the simultaneous effects of demand planning practices on the disruptions induced by operational risks in supply chains. In order to reduce this gap, this paper aims to explore the impact of the demand planning process on operational risk, and thereby reveal if operational risk factors and their negative consequences may be mitigated through the application of specific demand planning practices in supply chains. Methods: The study involves two stages of multivariate statistical analysis. In stage one, independent and dependent variables are reduced through factor analysis in order to highlight the main, underlying, multi-item factors. In the second stage of the study, a multiple regression analysis is conducted to compare the general contribution to variance in operational risk accounted for by demand planning practices and their combinations. The conducted analysis provided regression models for particular operational risks. Results: The study reveals that all activities in the demand planning process contribute more or less to lower operational risk in the examined supply chains. In particular, there are strong relationships between demand planning practices and both control and demand risks. On the other hand, the lesser effects of demand planning may be observed in process and supply risks. Conclusions: The study shows that different managerial instruments, which are not inherently dedicated to risk management, when appropriately applied, may have an indirect impact on the mitigation of supply chain risk. In particular, the concept of demand planning might be very helpful for managers when dealing with demand and control risks.
    Wstęp: Mimo faktu, że w literaturze przedmiotu podejmowano problem dotyczący roli określonych czynności planowania w łagodzeniu ryzyka i jego skutków, niemniej wciąż brakuje badań podejmujących problematykę jednoczesnego wpływu czynności w planowaniu popytu na zakłócenia wywołane przez czynniki ryzyka operacyjnego w łańcuchach dostaw. W związku z tym celem artykułu jest identyfikacja wpływu procesu planowania popytu na zakłócenia wywołane przez ryzyko operacyjne. Innymi słowy, celem niniejszej pracy jest rozpoznanie czy operacyjne czynniki ryzyka i ich negatywne konsekwencje mogą zostać ograniczone za pomocą aplikacji czynności w procesie planowania popytu w łańcuchach dostaw. Metody: W artykule przeprowadzono dwa etapy wielowymiarowej analizy statystycznej. W pierwszym etapie zmienne zostały zredukowane za pomocą analizy czynnikowej w celu identyfikacji podstawowych konstruktów. W drugim etapie badania, przeprowadzono analizę regresji wielorakiej po to, aby porównać wpływ poszczególnych czynności w planowaniu popytu na konsekwencje ryzyka operacyjnego. Wyniki: W rezultacie przeprowadzonego badania stwierdzono, że czynności planowania popytu w mniejszym lub większym stopniu przyczyniają się do ograniczenia ryzyka operacyjnego w łańcuchach dostaw. W szczególności, istnieją silne relacje między planowaniem popytu i konsekwencjami ryzyka decyzyjnego oraz ryzyka popytowego. Z drugiej strony, mniejszy wpływ planowania popytu można obserwować w przypadku ryzyka związanego z fizycznym przepływem produktów oraz ryzyka w sferze dostaw. Wnioski: Badanie pokazuje, że metody zarządzania, niekoniecznie dedykowane dla potrzeb ograniczania ryzyka, mogą istotnie przyczyniać się do zmniejszenia jego konsekwencji w łańcuchach dostaw. W szczególności koncepcja planowania popytu może zostać wykorzystana przez menedżerów w przypadku ograniczania konsekwencji ryzyka decyzyjnego i ryzyka popytowego.

    Współczesne łańcuchy dostaw są często analizowane z perspektywy układów triadycznych, która umożliwia zrozumienie złożoności i dynamiki zmian zachodzących w strukturach międzyorganizacyjnych. W niniejszym artykule wykorzystano dwa podstawowe rodzaje związków triadycznych — lukę strukturalną oraz układ zamknięty — do prezentacji problematyki generowania renty sieciowej w łańcuchach dostaw. Ważnym i wciąż aktualnym problemem w funkcjonowaniu współczesnych łańcuchów dostaw jest bowiem nierównomierny podział renty sieciowej wynikającej ze współpracy międzyorganizacyjnej. W związku z tym celem artykułu jest rozpoznanie i wyjaśnienie zjawiska apropriacji (zawłaszczania) renty sieciowej w triadycznych łańcuchach dostaw. Ponadto w artykule zasygnalizowano możliwość estymacji renty sieciowej w praktyce funkcjonowania łańcuchów dostaw.
    Most often, the contemporary supply chains are nowadays analyzed from the perspective of triadic arrangements, which brings an understanding of the complexity and dynamics of changes in inter-organizational structures. In this paper, the structural hole and closure as two basic forms of triads are depicted to elaborate on the emergence of network rent in supply chains, as the uneven distribution of network rent derived from the inter-organizational structures is still a vital issue. The goal of this paper is thus to identify and explain the phenomenon of network rent appropriation in triadic supply chains. Likewise, the paper seeks to recognize the possibility of estimating network rent in supply chains.

    The network view can be successfully employed while investigating the role of relationships in deriving the competitive advantage of contemporary supply chains. Prior studies, when elaborating on the competitive advantage of supply chains, are mostly anchored in either the resource-based view or the dyadic view, as two complementary, but distinct concepts. Consequently, there is a dearth of studies that elaborate on the concept of network competitive advantage as the extension of relational view. To address this gap, this study aims to combine the network view of competitive advantage with embeddedness as an important dimension of the social capital. In this study, the concept of structural and relational embeddedness has been employed to offer a systematic conceptual analysis of the network competitive advantages of triadic supply chains. Based on this conceptual reasoning, we then build key theoretical propositions that aid in deeper understanding of how the relationships are shaped by the social capital to derive the network competitive advantage of supply chains.
    Podejście sieciowe może być z powodzeniem wykorzystane w badaniu roli, jaką odgrywają relacje międzyorganizacyjne w osiąganiu przewagi konkurencyjnej współczesnych łańcuchów dostaw. Dotychczasowe publikacje podejmujące tę tematykę są z reguły zakotwiczone w teorii zasobowej lub ujęciu diadycznym, jako dwóch komplementarnych, lecz odmiennych perspektywach poznawczych. W rezultacie brakuje badań, które podejmowałyby problematykę sieciowej przewagi konkurencyjnej będącej rozszerzeniem szkoły relacyjnej. Celem artykułu jest wykorzystanie koncepcji zakorzenienia społecznego (w szczególności zakorzenienia strukturalnego i relacyjnego) w rozpoznaniu sieciowej przewagi konkurencyjnej. W wyniku przeprowadzonych rozważań sformułowano postulaty, które umożliwiają głębsze zrozumienie roli zakorzenienia społecznego w kształtowaniu relacji międzyorganizacyjnych służących budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej łańcuchów dostaw.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja wykorzystania rozwiązań technologicznych typu in-store i out-store w funkcjonowaniu struktury omnikanałowej z punktu widzenia zróżnicowanych trendów zakupowych.
    Due to the new purchasing trends, omnichannels in the product distribution are exposed to dynamic changes. One of such changes is the digital transformation, which affects not only the way the purchases are made, but also transport, collection of products by customers and management of product returns. Oftentimes, these activities are transferred to the virtual world, and they are performed with the use of innovative technology. The aim of this paper is to present the use of in-store and out-store technologies in the omnichannel structure from the perspective of new emerging purchasing trends.

    producers should perceive a manufacturing strategy as the issue of crucial importance for their market position. It describes the use of manufacturing as a competitive weapon, as opposed to a function that is passive with respect to its competitive environment. Manufacturing companies differ in the way they meet the demand for their products. Some deliver products to their clients from finished goods inventories as their production anticipates customers' orders; others, however, manufacture only in response to customers' orders. In this connection the emphasis of manufacturing strategies is now more to competition in terms of time and customization. Time competition requires an emphasis on time which should not be wasted and is supported by fewer and faster activities being performed. On the other hand, customization means performing some activities according to the unique requirements of an individual customer. Competition in terms of time and customization is reflected in one of the most popular classification of manufacturing strategy, namely: make-to-stock (MTO), assembly-to-order (ATO), make-to-order (MTO) and engineer-to-order (ETO). The application of the strategy may determine the extent the producers use forecasting techniques, combine environmental and market data into forecasting process and prepare forecasts for specific purposes. The goal of the paper is to make a cross-national comparison of the effect of forecasting practices on different types of manufacturing strategies applied in 343 producers from Europe, Asia and Africa. In order to achieve an empirical aim a necessary methodology and statistical analyses have been employed. In the result of the analysis multiple regression models have been developed for specific manufacturing strategies of producers from different countries worldwide. It enabled to make cross-national comparisons of the contribution to variance in manufacturing strategy.
