In spite of the frequent calls for internationalization, video game developers do not seem to be willing to create titles completely devoid of cultural references. As a matter of fact, it might be even impossible to produce an utterly acultural product. For this reason, whenever a video game is planned to be published in a different market, it might have to undergo cultural alterations for this target market recipients to understand and accept it. This is especially the case when the source and target markets are far apart as far as their cultural conventions are concerned. This article discusses the culture-related problems encountered by video game localization teams and the solutions utilized.

Several examples are discussed, from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the Dark Souls series, showing the possible links between video games and Stein’s writing techniques, especially in the field of open world games, where the large, easily accessible spaces make it more difficult to build coherent, organised plots.

The article presents an interpretation of Orwell video games in context of available analytical tropes in Orwellian research. The paper touches on various problems described by academic readers of Nineteen Eighty-Four and tries to answer the question whether games provide innovations in the way they problematize socio-political issues in comparison to Orwell’s classic novel. In the introductory part, the author discusses the possibility of utilizing the notion of critical dystopia in the analysis of Orwell video games. The following chapters touch on the subject of cultural references, realistic styles, biopolitics and class representations.

There is a lack of motivation in high schools that is difficult to ignore. This is even worse in the case of history courses, which are perceived by students as “useless.” Many would cite video games and mobile phones as some of the technological changes that explain how teenagers are less interested in such subjects. However, there is an enormous educational potential in video games that should not be ignored. This work is an explanation of how history can be translated not only through audio-visual language, but also in the form of a new type of word: ludic language. Moreover, an educational activity is proposed in order to find a solution to this lack of motivation. For this activity, the Early Modern period simulator Europa Universalis IV has been chosen as the video game to be implemented in a history class for 14-year-olds.

The authors discuss the role of the map in various game genres, specifically video games. Presented examples illustrate widespread map usage in various ways and forms by the authors of games, both classic and video. The article takes a closer look at the classification and development of video games within the last few decades. Presently, video games use advanced geospatial models and data resources. Users are keen on a detailed representation of the real world. Game authors use advanced visualization technologies, which often are innovative and very attractive. Joint efforts of cartographers, geo-information specialists and game producers can bring interesting effects in the future. Although games are mainly made for entertainment, they are more frequently used for other purposes. There is a growing need for data reliability as well as for some effective means of transmission cartographic content. This opens up a new area of both scientific and implementation activity for cartographers. There is no universally accessible data on the role of cartographers in game production, but apparently it is quite limited at the moment. However, a wider application of cartographic methodology would have a positive effect on the development of games and, conversely, methods and technologies applied by game makers can influence the development of cartography.

Playing a game does not mean that we are doing something childish and useless. Using a new technology to express our feelings and raise the awareness of social issues does not mean we cannot call it art. If we go back in time, we can realize that there has always been a resistance to novelty and machines. Sometimes, they were even considered harmful. The same life cycle happens with video games: they are valuable in many ways, they are far more developed than they were twenty years ago, and they have even reached a stage where we can find art in them. But how can they be art? Is the answer in the story or in the audiovisual elements?

Advanced terrain models are currently commonly used in many video/computers games. Professional GIS technologies, existing spatial datasets and cartographic methodology are more widely used in their development. This allows for achieving a realistic model of the world. On the other hand, the so-called game engines have very high capability of spatial data visualization. Preparing terrain models for the purpose of video games requires knowledge and experience of GIS specialists and cartographers, although it is also accessible for non-professionals. The authors point out commonness and variety of use of terrain models in video games and the existence of a series of ready, advanced tools and procedures of terrain model creating. Finally the authors describe the experiment of performing the process of data modeling for “Condor Soar Simulator”.

The video games industry is one of the fastest growing branches of industry, reaching revenues comparable to (or even surpassing, depending on the source) the 70 year older film industry. The growth was not free from turmoil, as the industry faced many disruptive changes, market crashes, fusions and takeovers. High development costs and fierce competition make video games a high-risk business. While it seems obvious that companies in such unstable environment should strive to achieve the highest quality of their products, the uniqueness, variety, complexity, and constant evolution of video games makes common definitions and models of quality difficult to apply. This article provides an overview of problems concerning the application of the term "quality", it's frameworks and measurement methods to video games.

It introduces a theory as well as analysis of chosen video games and studies the process of translation. The author considers the obstacles which can be encountered by translators, as well as methods which are used in the process of localization. The author analyses games from different genres: Ace Ventura (1997, adventure), Baldur’s Gate (1998, RPG) and Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos (2002, RTS), where the plot (and as a consequence its translation) is very important. The author studies fragments from these games and tries to explain and critique (if necessary) the choices taken by translators.

This work concerns online streaming platforms centered on broadcasting video games-related content, such as Twitch.tv and Douyu.com. The aim of this article is two-fold: first, to point out the possible research methods regarding online streaming services as mediums for video game criticism, and second, to assess the potential of these platforms for generating critical discourse about video games. The methodology of the research is based on Mia Consalvo’s take on paratextual frameworks and Veli-Matti Karhulahti’s notions of interview and play frames regarding the activity of video games streaming. In this article, the initial characterization of Twitch.tv and Douyu.com is followed by an analysis on how the work of streamers as content creators can influence the reception of video games. Afterwards, a reading of analyzed phenomena based on paratextual framework is proposed. The last section juxtaposes the initial findings with the perspective of changing viewership figures in relation to selected ludic properties of games. In conclusion, it is stated that the analyzed streaming platforms reflect the proliferating crowdsource trends in the video game industry, with forms of interacting with the product at various stages of its development cycle establishing new practices of talking in and about video games.

Physical inactivity is one of the main causes of noncommunicable diseases worldwide. In addition, obesity worldwide is increasing day by day due to insufficient energy expenditure, which is the result of physical inactivity. This review aimed to examine the physio logical effects of active video games (AVGs) systems and tried to define whether the AVGs could be suggested as an alternative exercise model considering the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) criteria. This review was based on the physiological re sponses of the different AVGs that were discussed in previous studies. It was revealed that AVGs significantly increased the energy expenditure and metabolic equivalent according to resting state. The majority of AVGs were found to achieve physical activit y levels of moderate intensity which meet ACSM criteria for health and fitness (3 -6 MET). Especially, AVGs can be considered as an alternative exercise model that is integrated with fun and technology in everyday use of individuals, reducing obesity preval ence and improving physical activity level with the ever - evolving modern and sophisticated AVGs systems. AVGs can actually be considered among the exercise models for the future, with the increasing use of active video game systems around the world.

The aim of this article is to answer the questions about the essence and continuity of the video games’ worlds. In order to achieve that Roman Ingarden’s formal ontological tools are used. The article consists of four main parts. First two clarify the basic concepts used in the article such as a world and an essence. Next, the conditions of world continuity deduced from three aspects of identity, namely ‘selfness’, ‘wholeness’ and ‘identity’, are discussed. The last part applies these conditions to chosen instances of video game types.

Opis:
The fight that Europe and the West must wage against jihadist terrorism will take some time, but if we live up to our values of integration and democracy, we will come out of it soon. As Giovanni Falcone, the Italian judge killed by the Mafia, once said about the Mafia: “It is a human phenomenon, and as all human phenomena has a start and an evolution, it will have also an end”. Jihadis have been using Twitter at least since 2010, with the Shabaab joining the site in December 2011, but never before to this extent. One early adapter of Twitter, the Afghan Taliban, began to establish their social media presence in December 2010, through which they issued brief bulletins about their actions and alerts for forthcoming communiqués. Many of the most prominent jihadi groups have followed the same path, including the Shabaab al-Mujahideen, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). The content of these Twitter accounts has tended to closely mirror material released to jihadi forums. For example, the Afghan Taliban may post the text of a communiqué to their website, to a jihadi forum, and to the Twitter account of one of their spokesmen. Mirroring jihadi groups, elements of the online jihadi community have also migrated to social media sites, with prominent forums such as Shumukh al-Islam and Ansar al- Mujahideen English Forum creating Twitter accounts to publicise notable releases and discussions. Concurrently, many individual jihadis and jihadi supporters have joined Twitter, enthusiastically circulating propaganda among themselves and promoting it to potential recruits. Yet, the benefits conferred by social networking come with a substantial cost: social networking platforms can sow great confusion if known official accounts are deleted and re-established or if there are multiple accounts claiming to represent a specific jihadi group. In order to reach the new official accounts, followers must be able to distinguish the legitimate social media accounts of jihadi groups from non-authenticated users, which is a level of ambiguity that is not found on jihadi forums.

Opis:
Article points out possible uses of hidden educational messages in popular video games, and hipothetical models of cooperation between pedagogical environment and video games makers. The basic differences between popular video games, and educational video games are demonstrated as well. Futher part of article treats about an explanation of why pedagogical environment should focus more on designing the popular games, than forcing to create more educational ones. Portraying the examples of hidden messages bases upon such titles as Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and World of Warcraft. The MIME-NET model is used as a ground of hypothetical cooperation.
Artykuł wskazuje możliwe zastosowania ukrytych treści edukacyjnych w grach popularnych, a także hipotetyczne modele współpracy pomiędzy środowiskami pedagogicznymi i twórcami gier wideo. Do przedstawienia przykładów ukrytych treści wykorzystano takie tytuły jak Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs oraz World of Warcraft. Za bazę przykładowej współpracy posłużył model MIME-NET.

Opis:
Abstract The study examined the effect of a commercial digital video game on high school students’ language learning motivation. Participants were 241 male students randomly assigned to one of the following three treatments: Readers, who intensively read the game’s story; Players, who played the digital video game; and Watchers, who watched two classmates play the digital video game. A language learning motivation scale was given to the participants as a pre- and post-test. Also, field notes were taken. Results indicated a significant language learning motivation increase over time. Only the Watchers, however, showed significantly higher motivation than the Readers in the end. Thus, the use of commercial digital video games can help enhance high school students’ language learning motivation.
