    The paper sought to present one trend of the debate carried on within the confines of 20th-century history of science, i.e. the genesis of science. Among various trends of this debate we shall distinguish one that concerns the evaluation of the significance of the main traditions in Greek philosophy (Ionian, Pythagorean-Platonic) in the process of the constitution of science. The paper shows some solutions to this question that appear in the main trends of 20th--century history of science (externalism, internalism).

    In the Middle Ages the problem of the beginning (genesis) of the world was studied inthe context of an analysis of the Book of Genesis. The Biblical text was interpreted in away that would be compatible with the reading of Plato's Timeus. The article focuses on two mediaeval thinkers, Eriugena and Thierry of Chartres, who conducted this sort of research. Both Eriugena's Periphyseon and Thierry's treatise De sex dierum operibus belong to the genre of hexaemeron, that is commentaries on the Genesis. An analysis of early mediaeval hexaemerons provides an excellent opportunity to explore these keystone points of mediaeval culture which lie at the cross-roads of philosophy, science and biblical exegesis.

    The commencement of a reflection on the nature and genealogy of the discussion on the crisis of civilization which took place in the Polish school of philosophy should be preceded by a few remarks. Firstly, Polish scholars who wrote about the crisis of civilization were fully independent as regards their ideas. Their voices were not only repetitions of the considerations undertaken in the circles of Western intellectuals aware of the impending collapse of civilization. Nor did they appear as a late echo. The proposals formulated by Polish scholars contributed to the achievements of the Polish reflection on civilization. Romanowski, Zdziechowski, Koneczny, Majewski pointed out the causes of the crisis of civilization. In this context, they indicated the spread of ideologies: communism, socialism, and mediocracy, i.e. the cult of mediocrity at all levels of culture and politics; secularism, materialism, or attempts to merge various civilizations. Independence and originality of the thought of Polish scholars does not mean that they were not familiar with the theories that were formulated by Western intellectuals. The reception of their works escalated interest in the subject discussed, and suggestions contained in them often aroused controversy and criticism. Not wanting to exaggerate the actual impact nor to diminish the importance of the ideas of Western scholars, I wish to shed light on the views of some thinkers whose reflection on civilization, together with an indication of the causes of the crisis of Western civilization is worth a reminder.

    Spór Arystotelesa ze starożytnymi fizykalistami przekazany w Fizyce II.8–9 dotyczy roli przyczyny celowej w przyrodzie. W artykule analizowana jest arystotelesowska teoria przyczyn jako szerszy kontekst tego sporu. Przyjmując analogię między naturą a sztuką oraz uznając paradygmatyczny charakter tworzenia artefaktów, autor stara się uzasadnić arystotelesowską teorię przyczyn. Badana jest geneza artefaktów z punktu widzenia tych aspektów teorii Arystotelesa, które są wyróżnione w jego wyjaśnieniu naturalnego powstawania. Omawia się zasadniczy charakter każdej przyczyny, różnice między przyczynami oraz swoistą zbieżność między trzema z nich, komplementarność między przyczyną sprawczą a celową, naturę i rolę pragnienia w procesie powstawania oraz prymat formy. Wprowadza się pojęcie pełnego czasowego przedmiotu (trans-temporal whole). Wskazuje się na konieczność uwzględnienia pełnego przedmiotu – obejmującego cały proces powstawania, wraz z jego źródłem – jako stosowny kontekst dla właściwego rozumienia powstawania. Przedstawia się także rozróżnienie pomiędzy perspektywą obiektywną i subiektywną, które jest szczególnie przydatne w wyjaśnianiu przyczynowości celowej.
    The present paper, taking as a point of departure Aristotle’s dispute with the ancient physicalists in Physics II.8–9 about the role of the final cause in nature, examines the context of the problem, his theory of the causes. Aristotle assumes an analogy between nature and craft and takes the production of artifacts to be paradigmatic. With these assumptions as guiding principles, the paper attempts to motivate his causal theory and propose what may be called a “logic” of the causes. It examines artefactual coming-to-be more closely, focusing on the aspects of Aristotle’s account that are highlighted in his explanation of natural coming-to-be: the basic character of the causes, the peculiar distinction between the causes and the accompanying the deeper coincidence among three of them, the complementarity between the final and moving causes, the nature and role of desire in coming-to-be, and the primacy of form. It introduces the notion of a trans-temporal objective whole and shows the need to consider the full whole—which includes the entire process of coming-to-be together with its source—as the proper context for a full understanding of coming-to-be. It also points out the importance of the distinction between the objective and subjective perspectives, especially useful in understanding final causality.

    Artykuł omawia Case Method – dominującą metodę edukacyjną stosowaną w amerykańskich szkołach prawa, która polega na nauczaniu prawa poprzez analizę orzeczeń sądowych, stworzoną w latach 70. XIX w. przez Christophusa Collumbusa Langdella. Langdell postrzegał prawo jako naukę, podobną do fizyki czy chemii, a więc jako uporządkowany system obiektywnej wiedzy. Stworzona przez niego metoda nauczania służyć miała przygotowaniu osób zajmujących się prawem w sposób naukowy. W artykule przedstawiona została koncepcja prawa Langdella, oraz wpływ, jaki jego metoda nauczania wywarła na nurty amerykańskiej filozofii prawa – klasyczną jurysprudencję oraz realizm prawniczy.
    The article discusses the Case Method – the dominant method of teaching in American law schools, based on the analysis of judicial decisions, which was created in the 1870s by Christophus Collumbus Langdell. Langdell perceived law as a science similar to physics or chemistry, and thus as an ordered system of objective knowledge, and the method of teaching created by him was intended to prepare people dealing with law in a scientific manner. The article presents the Langdell’s concept of law, and the impact of his teaching method on streams of American legal philosophy – classical jurisprudence and legal realism.

    The problem of biogenesis is presented from the transdisciplinary point of view. Special attention is paid to: (i) the nature of life, (ii) definitions of life, (iii) the religious and theological aspects of the category of light, (iv) metaphysics of light, (v) biophysics of light, (vi) the relation between light and life, especially biophotons as the carriers of biological information. It is suggested the possibility of the reconstruction of the electromagnetic biogenesis. The significant works concerning above problems have been reviewed.

    This article presents a new approach to the interpretation of Juliusz Słowacki's Genesis from the Spirit (1844) from the perspective of the groundbreaking philosophical discourse of modernity. What it actually suggests is that the mystical Form of Słowacki's cosmic vision, believed to be an emanation of the Absolute or a vestige of Creation, has a historical and materialist core. This claim is based on a series of comparisons with passages from Hegel and the premises of the philosophy of Friedrich Schlegel. By following closely the spontaneous movement of inner tensions in Słowacki's poetic discourse this study demonstrates that it is driven his own philosophical project and less so by the discourse of mysticism.

    In this interpretation of Juliusz Słowacki's ‘Snycerz był zatrudniony Dyjanny lepieniem…’ [The carver was busy shaping Diana's statue] the discussion focuses on his attitude to matter, especially as the material of art. The article argues that Słowacki elevates and even sacralises mud, the most lowly of raw materials, and thus exposes the falseness of the popular view that he despises matter, the base opposite of the spirit. However, it would be more accurate to say that in his vision, which is part of his Genesis from the Spirit philosophy, the path to salvation leads through the reconciliation of spirit and matter rather than a triumph of one over the other.

    Formuła „Jedność w różnorodności” wyraża jedną z idei, które wywierają istotny wpływ na świadomość społeczną i rzeczywistość polityczną w wielu państwach, oddziałując pośrednio na ich sytuację geopolityczną. Celem opracowania jest wyjaśnienie pochodzenia tej idei, zarówno w tradycji zachodniej jak i w innych kręgach kulturowych, z uwzględnieniem odmiennych sposobów jej interpretacji oraz wykorzystania dla realizacji celów politycznych. W części pierwszej wyjaśniono filozoficzne interpretacje tego hasła, począwszy od filozofów jońskich (VII w. p.n.e.), aż do europejskiej filozofii nowożytnej, oraz jego znaczenie naukowe w klasycznym okresie rozwoju geografii. Druga część poświęcona jest prezentacji odpowiedników hasła „jedność w różnorodności”, jakie pojawiły się w różnych okresach w obrębie innych kręgów kulturowych: arabskim, indyjskim, chińskim oraz w Azji Południowo-Wschodniej. W części trzeciej ukazano wpływ tej idei na praktykę polityczną państw zachodnich, zwłaszcza Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki, Włoch i Szwajcarii. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na destrukcyjny wpływ zmiany w rozumieniu idei, jakiej dokonano w Unii Europejskiej.
    The formula "Unity in diversity" expresses one of the ideas that exert a significant influence on social consciousness and political reality in many countries, indirectly influencing their geopolitical situation. The purpose of this study is to explain the origin of this idea, both in the Western tradition and in other cultural circles, as well as the different ways of interpreting it and using it to achieve political goals. The first part explains the philosophical interpretations of this slogan, starting from the Ionian philosophers (7th century BC), up to the European modern philosophy, as well as its scientific significance in the classical period of geography development. The second part is devoted to the presentation of equivalents of the slogan "unity in diversity", which appeared at different times within other cultural circles: Arabic, Indian, Chinese, and in South-East Asia. The third part shows the influence of this idea on the political practice of Western countries, especially the United States of America, Italy and Switzerland. Particular attention has been paid to the destructive impact of the change in the understanding of the idea that has taken place in the European Union.

    W artykule zostały zaprezentowane poglądy filozoficzne Feliksa Młynarskiego na genezę materii i mechanizmy ewolucji zawarte w nieopublikowanej rozprawie zatytułowanej Filozofia ewolucji kosmicznej. Argumentuję, że poglądy te — wbrew deklaracji autora — nie są rodzajem dualizmu ontologicznego, ale jedną z wersji panpsychizmu znanej jako pan(proto)psychizm kosmiczny, który jest formą monizmu.
    The article presents the philosophical views of Feliks Młynarski on the genesis of matter and mechanisms of evolution included in the unpublished dissertation entitled Philosophy of Cosmic Evolution. I argue that these views — contrary to the author’s declaration — are not a kind of ontological dualism, but one of the versions of panpsychism known as pan(proto)cosmic psychism, which is a form of monism.

    Abstrakt: W artykule podejmuję problem genezy opozycji między monizmem a dualizmem. Skupiam się na ukazaniu kontekstu historycznego, w którym opozycja ta się pojawiła. Przede wszystkim analizuję terminologię związaną z tą opozycją. Pokazuję, że w związku z uniezależnieniem się filozofii od teologii pewne terminy, które były wykorzystywane do prezentacji doktryn teologicznych, zostały zaadaptowane do badań filozoficznych. Przedstawiam transfer terminologii z teologii do filozofii i interpretuję dualizm jako pojęcie liminalne.
    In the article I address the problem of the genesis of the monism-dualism opposition. I focus on showing the historical context in which this opposition appeared. First of all, I analyze the terminology related to this opposition. I show that due to the emancipation of philosophy from theology, certain terms that were used to present theological doctrines were adopted for the purposes of philosophical research. I present the transfer of this terminology from theology to philosophy and interpret dualism as a liminal concept.
