Anisakis simplex stage 3 larvae found in herring were used to experimentally infect 155 sticklebacks and 6 nine-spined sticklebacks, caught in the Gdynia marina (Gulf of Gdańsk). The larvae were observed in the fish body cavity as early as 24 h after infection, only the sticklebacks being affected. Altogether, 50 live and 2 dead larvae were found in the stickleback body cavity. The infection prevalence and mean intensity were 13.6% and 2.4 larvae, respectively, from 1 to 8 larvae per fish being recorded. It is concluded that the stickleback may serve as a paratenic host for Anisakis simplex.

Same seasonal changes in frequency of developmental stages were observed in the case of females T. gasterostei. The highest level of infection with ectoparasites was observed in spring and summer and was probably an effect of increase of the reproductive activity with increase of temperature. Infection with tapeworms was generally low and was a result of feeding activity and fish diet.

The cycle of gonad development and related changes in the length structure and spatial-temporal distribution of ninespine sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius L.) in Puck Bay were studied. Observations were carried out in the shallow shore zones, as well as in the deeper epipelagic zone of the Bay. Ninespine sticklebacks reproduce in the brackish environment of Puck Bay, breeding in its warmer, inshore zones. Reproduction takes place in the spring and summer months, from April to July. One female spawns several clutches of eggs during one breeding season. The average length of ninespine sticklebacks in Puck Bay was about 40 mm, and the sex ratio in the population was close to 1:1. However, both length structure and sex ratio were subject to local and periodic variations, resulting from possible breeding-related territorial divisions. Higher gonadosomatic indices in females in early spring represented the transition of fish to the advanced vitelligenous phase. The lowest GSI of males during the breeding season indicated the termination of spermatogenesis. The completion of spawning in August started a new process of gonad restoration to prepare the fish for the next breeding season.

A total of 142 individuals of Gasterosteus aculeatus L. and 22 individuals of Pungitius pungitius (L.) from several areas of the coastal waters of the Gdańsk Bay both brackish- and freshwater were examined for parasites. The survey was carried out within 1988-1991. Six parasite species, namely: Gyrodactylus arcuatus, Apatemon gracilis, Sphaerostomum bramae, Phyllodistomum folium, Neoechinorhynchus rutili, and Argulus foliaceus were recovered from sticklebacks caught in freshwater habitats; while the other 4 parasites: Apatemon annuligerum, Bothriocephalus sp., Schistocephalus solidus, Proteocephalus percae occurred only in fish from brackish-water areas. Additional 5 parasites: Trichodina domerguei, Diplostomum pungitii, Diplostomum spathaceum, Rhaphidascaris acus, and Thersitina gasterostei were recorded in fishes from both habitats.

Using the method of parasitological section and staining method H-E for histopathological sections, the author examined 281 indivuals of stickleback G. aculeatus (L.) during the years 1982-1985. In 65 individuals (lenght 2.5-6.0 cm) the presence of unsporulated oocysts of Eimeria aculeati Jastrzębski, 1984 in the intestine was found, in 27 fish of similar lenght - the presence of unsporulated oocysts of Eimeria żarnowskii Jastrzębski, 1982. Species was determined after sporulation of the oocysts in aquarium water, at 20°c. In the liver of two sticklebacks, 8.5 and 9.0 cm in lenght, numerous focuses with the oocysts of Eimeria gasterostei (Thélohan, 1890) Doflein, 1909 were found. In drying fresh smears of the liver a longitudinal, circumferential suture on the sporocyst wall was visible (fig. 1, 2) which made the authors revise the species and determine it as Goussia (Goussia) gasterostei (Thélohan, 1890) - s. Eimeria gasterostei (Thélohan, 1890) Doflein, 1909. G. gasterostei is a parasite new for Poland. Histopathological studies revealed the existence of intraplasmic meronts in the life cycle of E. aculeati, and these were classified by the authors in the following groups: 6-merozoit, 12-merozoit and 22-merozoit and are supposed to represent at least three generations of merogony. It was found that in the development of Eimeria żarnowskii the trophozoites and gamonts parasitise on the surface of the intestine epithelium (fig. 5, 6). In 19 of 265 fish two coccidia were found in the intestine: E. aculeati and E. żarnowskii. The extensity of the infection during the years 1982-85 is presented in table 1. The development forms of the parasites are presented in figs. 1-8.

Metacercariae of Diplostomum spp. have been detected in the eyes (lens, humour and under retina) of many species of fish. Adult forms occure in the intestine of piscivorous birds, mostly Laridae. Eight young black-headed gulls, Larus ridibundus (L.) were infected with eye-flukes from the eyes of three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.): five with flukes from the eye-lenses and three from the vitreous humour of eyes. After few days birds were euthanised with an ether overdose and the intestines were studied. In the intestine of experimentally infected birds were found adult stages of Diplostomum sp.
Przedstawiona praca zawiera wyniki eksperymentalnego pozyskania postaci dorosłej przywr z rodzaju Diplostomum. Przywry z rodzaju Diplostomum są szeroko rozprzestrzenione na półkuli północnej. W ich cyklu życiowym występuje trzech żywicieli: ślimaki, głównie z rodzaju Lymnea (I żywiciel pośredni), ryby (II żywiciel pośredni) oraz ptaki rybożerne, gł. z rodzaju Larus (żywiciel ostateczny). Identyfikacja metacerkarii z oka ryb jest niezwykle trudna ze względu na ich podobieństwo oraz ogromną zmienność. Przywry żyją w oku wielu gatunków ryb słodkowodnych, występujących w wodach słonawych oraz ryb hodowlanych. Licznie występują u ryb z Zatoki Gdańskiej. Metacerkarie pozyskano z cierników złowionych w porcie jachtowym w Gdyni. Zebranymi metacerkariami zarażono młode mewy śmieszki. Ptakom podano kawałki ryb (śledzi) wraz z metacerkariami. W eksperymencie uzyskano postacie dorosłe przywr. Uzyskane osobniki dorosłe zostały zmierzone (tab. 1). Większość pomiarów odpowiadała danym literaturowym dla D. spathaceum i w jednym przypadku D. mergi. Jedynie narządy rozrodcze były mniejsze niż to wynika z danych literaturowych. Można próbować to powiązać np. z młodym wiekiem osobników. Wyniki wskazują, że D. spathaceum jest najliczniejszym pasożytem oka cierników z Bałtyku.

The three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.) has been a very frequent fish in the Baltic coastal waters. In the Baltic Sea occurred three morphological forms of the three-spined stickleback: trachurus, semiarmatus and leiurus. The distribution and frequency of all forms of the stickleback in the Baltic have been different. The examined sticklebacks were collected from the Gulf of Gdańsk (Gdynia, Puck, Hel) and the mouth of the Dead Vistula (Górki Wschodnie). The studies on the correlation between the morphological forms of the stickleback and parasites’ infestation were carried out. Some species of parasites infected first of all form trachurus or leiurus of the stickleback. Correlation was observed in some of marine parasites like Thersitina gasterostei (Pagenstecher, 1861) (Copepoda) and Gyrodactylus arcuatus (Bychowsky, 1933) (Monogenea), infected generally trachurus form. Freshwater ciliates from the family Trichodina or plerocercoids of Schistocephalus solidus (Müller, 1776) (Cestoda) were found generally on/in form leiurus.
Ciernik jest rybą wykazującą niezwykłą zmienność morfologiczną. W związku z liczbą tarczek kostnych pokrywających ciało ryby, wyróżnia się kilka typów morfologicznych. Przypisuje im się też różne preferencje co do środowiska. Formę trachurus uważa się za morską, odbywajacą tarło w słonawych wodach Bałtyku, semiarmatus za pośrednią, z preferencją do wód słodkich a leiurus traktuje się jako odmianę słodkowodną, rozradzajacą sie w pobliskich rzekach i kanałach melioracyjnych. W Bałtyku wystepują wszystkie wspomniane formy morfologiczne ciernika, których rozmieszczenie i liczebność wzdłuż naszego wybrzeża jest różna. Trzy formy były stwierdzone w Zatoce Gdańskiej, przy czym najliczniej stwierdzano formę trachurus a najrzadziej leiurus. Na zachód od Zatoki Gdańskiej nie stwierdzono formy leiurus. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań parazytologicznych ciernika, wykazały związek pomiędzy polimorfizmem ciernika a stopniem inwazji niektórych pasożytów. Korelacje zaobserwowano między innymi w przypadku typowych dla ciernika widłonogów Thersitina gasterostei oraz przywr monogenetycznych Gyrodactylus arcuatus, które zarażały przede wszystkim cierniki trachurus. Wymienionym pasożytom, podobnie jak formie ciernika przypisuje się morski charakter. Inaczej przebiegała inwazja słodkowodnych orzęsków z rodzaju Trichodina oraz plerocerkoidów Schistocephalus solidus. Powyższe pasożyty zarażały najczęsciej słodkowodna forme leiurus.

Opis:
This paper analyses the changes in the level of infection with the freshwater parasite Schistocephalus solidus of the three-spined stickleback from the Gdynia Marina. Environmental factors such as salinity, pollution and eutrophication or the presence of other species affect the transmission of parasites. Infection indices have been increasing since the 1990s. Differences in the infection level of morphological forms were also found: this may be due to their environmental preferences.
