We tested an optical-absorption methane concentration meter for coal mines conditions. We studied conversion characteristics and evaluated its speed performance and proposed a method of dusty coal mines air multiplicative compensation. Requirements to the development of a methane concentration meter are provided.
Przedstawiono realizację testów optyczno-absorpcyjny miernik stężenia metanu do użytku w warunkach kopalnianych. Zbadano charakterystyki konwersji i dokonano oceny wydajności prędkości. Następnie zaproponowano metodę multiplikatywnej kompensacji zapylonej atmosfery kopalnianej. Przedstawiono też wymagania dotyczące miernika stężenia metanu.

This paper describes investigation on the influence of hydraulic oil temperature on the performance of a hydraulic pump. The aim of the research is to determine changes in volumetric efficiency of the pump in the form of maps of operation at different temperatures of the hydraulic oil, in conditions of variable speed and pressure. The described tests were carried out on an experimental stand with a hydraulic fixed-displacement gear pump controlled by a servo motor. Based on the signals from the sensors processed with the LabVIEW program, maps of the hydraulic pump operation were drown in a wide range of speeds and temperatures. The paper presents the results of the research and based on this the conclusions regarding the main aim of the research and others that were observed during the measurements were presented. The most important conclusion from the study shows that the temperature-dependent characteristics provide users with a significant amount of information such as operating conditions that will ensure a high level of efficiency.

When the machine is at high speed, serious problems occur, such as high frequency loss, difficult thermal management, and the rotor structural strength insufficiency. In this paper, the performances of two high-speed permanent magnet generators (HSPMGs) with different rotational speeds and the same torque are compared and analyzed. The two-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the 117 kW, 60 000 rpm HSPMG is established. By comparing a calculation result and test data, the accuracy of the model is verified. On this basis, the 40 kW, 20 000 rpm HSPMG is designed and the FEM is established. The relationship between the voltage regulation sensitivity and power factor of the two HSPMGs is determined. The influence mechanism of the voltage regulation sensitivity is further revealed. In addition, the air-gap flux density is decomposed by the Fourier transform principle, and the influence degree of different harmonic orders on the HSPMG performance is determined. The method to reduce the harmonic content is further proposed. Finally, the method to improve the HSPMG overload capacity is obtained by studying the maximum power. The research showed that the HSPMG at low speed (20 000 rpm) has high sensitivity of the voltage regulation, while the HSPMG at high speed (60 000 rpm) is superior to the HSPMG at low speed in reducing the harmonic content and increasing the overload capacity.

In the present study, the performance of an air standard dual cycle is analyzed using finite-time thermodynamics. The relations between the power output and the compression ratio, between the power output and the thermal efficiency are derived by detailed numerical examples. The results show that the maximum power output and the power output at the maximum efficiency point increase and then decrease as the equivalence ratio and/or the mean piston speed increases. The results also show that the optimal compression ratio corresponding to maximum power output point and the working range of the cycle remain constant as the mean engine speed is increased, but they increase and then decrease as the equivalence ratio is increased. It is noteworthy that the results obtained in the present study are of significance for providing guidance with respect to the performance evaluation of practical internal combustion engines.

Entrepreneurial orientation has emerged as a major construct in entrepreneurship literature. However, existing definitions of entrepreneurial orientation mainly focus on explorative behavior like innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking. Based on the long tradition of research on entrepreneurial functions, we argue that exploitative activities are no less an entrepreneurial endeavor than explorative activities. Following this understanding, we elaborate a broader conceptualization of the entrepreneurial orientation construct. In an empirical study with 346 established companies, we explore its effect on the performance of internationalization. Entrepreneurial orientation in its broader conceptualization positively influences the international performance and the effect is by far stronger than the one observed in existing studies. The reason for this is that both explorative and exploitative dimensions matter and equally drive the international performance. Entrepreneurial orientation positively influences the growth of the international activities as well. However, its effect is much lower. Whereas the explorative dimensions tend to foster the international growth, the exploitative dimensions do not show any effect.

The increasing importance of better transport connectivity has indicated the need to develop high-speed road load monitoring technologies. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Silk Road transportation programs considerable have developed the roads and highways networks in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian (CA) countries. Transportation services require proper maintenance and prompt track load monitoring. There is no holistic freight traffic management system that controls and monitors traffic flow in CA. A Weigh in Motion (WIM) technology can be used as an effective traffic management control system in the CA region. The WIM technology is designed to control axle and gross vehicle weight in motion. It has a wide range of applications, including pavement and bridge weight control, traffic legislation and state regulations. The WIM technology has advantages over conventional static weighing as it does not interrupt traffic flow by creating queues at monitoring stations. The WIM technology can be used not only as a weight control tool but also performs a comprehensive analysis of other traffic flow parameters. In cooperation with Korean UDNS experts with suport from KAIA, we test the application of WIM in Nur-Sultan city, North of Kazakhstan, with Siberian-type cold weather. These works create much challenges and innovative approach to test sensors in the harsh environment, from the extreme cold to hot temperatures, with intensive dust distortions. Our Talapker WIM pilot test site was installed in September 2020, and it performs Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and Axle of Weight (AOW) analyses. The Talapker WIM High Speed (HS) sensors are capable of detecting different driving patterns, including everyday driving, acceleration or deceleration more than 10km/h/s and eccentric driving (partial contact with the platform to avoid excessive weighting). The pilot Talapker HS WIM site has demonstrated a positive effect on implementing WIM technology in Kazakhstan. Every 10th car passing through the WIM site registered as an overloaded vehicle by gross weighting, and every 5th car is considered overloaded by axle weighting. GIS-based location allocation analysis (LAA) performed in the given study provided an understanding of a practical implementation of WIM sensors. Taking into consideration different geographical data, the WIM site map was developed to reveal 43 suitable locations. Further improvements for the CA road network and their WIM demand points will be the focus of future research investigations.

In order to identify high-speed navigation ability of trimaran planing hull, as well as investigate the characteristics of its resistance and hull form, ship model tests were conducted to measure resistance, trim and heaving under different displacements and gravity centre locations. The test results were then used to study the influence of spray strips on resistance and sea-keeping qualities. Moreover, different planning surfaces were compared in the model tests which helped to look into influence of steps on hull resistance and its moving position. Also, the resistance features of monohull and trimaran planing hulls, both with and without steps, were compared to each other. From the tests it can be concluded that: the two auxiliary side hulls increase aerodynamic lift at high-speed motion, which improves the hydrodynamic performance; the trimaran planing hull has also excellent longitudinal stability and low wave-making action; when Fr∇> 8, its motion is still stable and two distinct resistance peaks and two changes of sailing state (the second change is smaller) appear; spray strips are favourable for sea-keeping qualities at high speed. The change trends before the second resistance peak as to the resistance and sailing behaviour of trimaran planing hull without steps are the same as for monohull planing hull without steps. but when steps in both hulls exist the change trends are different; more specifically: trimaran planing hull with steps has only one resistance peak and its resistance increases along with its speed increasing, and the resistance is improved at the increasing speed as the number of steps increases.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of speed, agility and power performance during one soccer season and the impact of functional fitness on changes in motor performance in elite female soccer players. This study was conducted with 18 members of the Polish Women's National Football Team. The analyzed training season was divided into four training phases. Physical performance was assessed by a test of quickness - the 5m sprint, tests of maximal speed - the 30 m sprint, test of agility L-run test and tests of lower limb explosive power - counter movement jump (CMJ) and counter movement jump with arm swing. Functional fitness was assessed using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). Individual functional training as well as a training plan based on FIFA 11+ prevention were utilized. The analysis showed significant improvement in the CMJ test (F=3.02, p<0.05) and FMS score (F=5.959, p<0.01) during the in-season. Other parameters of physical performance were stable during the evaluation period. Positive correlations between baseline FMS score and changes of athletes' 30m sprint performance (r=-0.48, p<0.05), total in-season change of FMS score and total inseason change of 5m sprint performance (r=-0.53, p<0.05) were observed. Female soccer players during the in-season demonstrated a relatively good level of physical performance which corresponds to their particular training phase. Functional fitness intervention appears to be an effective way of improving speed, acceleration, and power performance in elite female soccer players.

Trim control mechanisms such as interceptors and trim flaps have been widely used in recent years in highspeed crafts for ride and trim control. In spite of their extensive application, a few studies investigating the impact of interceptors on planing craft performance, have been published. In the present study, the impact of interceptors on planing crafts hydrodynamic quality is investigated through application of an experimental method. Two scaled-down models of high-speed planing mono-hull and catamaran are tested with and without interceptors in calm water at different heights of the interceptors to investigate the effect of interceptors on drag reduction of the models. The first one is a scaled-down model of 11 m planning mono-hull boat and the test was conducted at the towing tank of Sharif University of Technology, Iran. The second one is a scaled-down model of 18 m planing catamaran boat and the test was conducted at the towing tank of Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI), Russia. The experimental results show a remarkable drag reduction of up to 15% for mono-hull model and up to 12% for catamaran model over the wide speed range of the models.

The uncontrolled rectifier and controlled rectifier which use fixed switching frequency control strategy are applied usually during the working of a high-power high- speed permanent magnet generator (HSPMG). Even for the controlled rectifier, it will generate harmonics. The electromagnetic performance of the HSPMG is also affected by these harmonics. In this paper, the influences of the fixed switching frequency control strategy on a HSPMG were studied. Based on the Fourier theory, the harmonic currents of the generator were analyzed, and the change of harmonic distribution range and current total harmonic distortion (THD) were obtained. By using an indirect field-circuit coupling method, the influences of the fixed switching frequency control strategy on the losses and torque of the generator were analyzed. The relations between the switching frequency and the losses and torque of the generator were obtained, and the change mechanism of the loss was revealed. The obtained conclusions can provide reference for the optimized choice of the switching frequency of the distributed generation system with the HSPMG. It can also provide support for the HSPMG electromagnetic structural optimization and the optimization of the loss and harmonic on the system level.

In this article, a novel approach to computer optimization of CNC toolpaths by adjustment of cutting speed vcand depth of cut apis presented. Available software works by the principle of adjusting feed rate on the basis of calculations and numerical simulation of the machining process. The authors wish to expand upon this approach by proposing toolpath optimization by altering two other basic process parameters. Intricacies and problems related totheadjustment of apand vcwere explained in the introductory part. Simulation of different variant of the same turning process with different parameter values were conducted to evaluate the effect of changes in depth of cut and cutting speed on process performance. Obtained results were investigated on the account of cutting force and tool life. The authors have found that depth of cut substantially affects cutting force, while the effect of cutting speed on it is minimal. An increase in both depth of cut and cutting speed affects tool life negatively, although the impact of cutting speed is much more severe. An increase in depth of cut allows for a more significant reduction of machining time, while affecting tool life less negatively. On the other hand, the adjustment of cutting speed helpsto reduce machining time without increasing cutting force component values and spindle load.

Opis:
A method of the minimization finite state machines (FSM) is proposed. In this method, such optimization criterion as the critical delay path is taken into account already at the stage of minimizing internal states. The method is based on sequential merging of two internal states including the optimization criteria. The critical path is estimated for CPLD devices. In addition, the proposed method allows one to minimize the number of transitions and input variables of the FSM. Experimental results shows, that the maximum clock frequency of minimized FSMs is higher by 17% comparing to initial FSM.

Cascade and variable rotational speed control systems of sewage pumping stations are compared in this article. The range of pump efficiency variations and potential for breakdowns are adopted as criteria. A pumping station including two or three pumps is analysed. A control system at a variable rotational speed and maximum sewage level is presented. Properties of a cascade control system and a system at a maximum head of sewage are compared using the example of any pump performance chart.

Super high speed permanent magnet generators (SHSPMG) usually operate at high frequency. The external characteristic of the SHSPMG under condition of high frequency operation is quite different from that of conventional generators. Therefore, it is necessary to study the external characteristic of the SHSPMG. Based on the finite element method, this paper studied the factors that affect the external characteristic of the SHSPMG. Combining the vector method and the finite element method, the external characteristic of the SHSPMG with the inductive load and the resistance load was studied. The variation law of the generator terminal voltage with the change of the load and current was obtained, and the key factors affecting the external characteristic of the SHSPMG were determined. The influences of the armature resistance, power factor, frequency and permanent magnet performance on the external characteristic of the SHSPMG were studied. The influence mechanism of different parameters on the generator external characteristic was revealed. The influence degree of each factor on the voltage regulation was determined. The conclusions can provide reference for the design and research of the SHSPMG.

Foresight. as modern planning tool. "Clean Sky" project will effect in creating new technologies, which usage in aviation will improve fast progress of technique. The paper indicates the newest technologies or technologies which will develop in about 25 years. Aircraft industry future technologies for Polish conditions have been discussed. List of perspective technologies for aviation and engineering industry has been described. These technologies may be developed in Poland to increase economy competitiveness. New revolutionary materials for aviation industry have been presented. Machine tool technologies, especially Computer Numerical Control (CNC), High Speed Machining (HSM) have emerged as effective mechanisms in the aerospace, automotive, and die and mould industries. These new technologies are attractive for competitive manufacturing because of their technical advantages, i.e. a significant reduction in lead-time, high product accuracy, and good surface finish. However, HSM not only stimulates advancements in cutting tools and materials, it also demands increasingly sophisticated CAD/CAM software, and powerful CNC controllers that require more supportive technologies. This paper describes the computational requirement and cutting parameters of HSM, look ahead programming and simulation.

W referacie zdefiniowano urządzenie zwane ogranicznikiem prędkości znajdujące się w pojeździe oraz przedstawiono aktualne wymagania dotyczące instalowania ogranicznika prędkości w pojazdach samochodowych zgodnie z Dyrektywą 92/6 EWG i Dyrektywą 2002/85 WE. Wymagania podano dla pojazdów samochodowych wyposażonych w urządzenia ograniczające prędkość należące do kategorii M2, M3 i N2. Opisano ogólną zasadę działania ogranicznika prędkości w pojeździe. Przedstawiono ogólne warunki wykonania badań ogranicznika prędkości w pojeździe z wykorzystaniem przyspieszenia pojazdu zgodnie z wymaganiami zawartymi w Regulaminie 89 EKG ONZ, których celem jest ocena skuteczności działania ogranicznika prędkości na podstawie wyznaczonej krzywej prędkości chwilowej pojazdu w funkcji czasu. Podano również warunki badań ogranicznika prędkości zainstalowanego w samochodzie ciężarowym marki RENAULT typu 24 FP kategorii N3 za pomocą urządzenia firmy CORRSYS-DATRON, które zostały przeprowadzone w Instytucie Transportu Samochodowego w Zakładzie Homologacji i Badań Pojazdów. Wykresami zilustrowano zależności prędkości jazdy od czasu uzyskane podczas wykonanych badań. Pracę zakończono analizą wyników badań.
The paper describes a device, called a speed limiter, located in the vehicle and presents the current requirements for installing the speed limiter in motor vehicles in accordance with Directive 92/6 EEC and Directive 2002/85 EC. The requirements are for vehicles equipped with speed limitation devices and belonging to category M2, M3 and N2. General principle of the vehicle speed limiter operation has been described. General conditions for conducting tests of the speed limiter in vehicle using the acceleration of the vehicle in accordance with the requirements of UN-ECE Regulations 89, whose purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of the speed limiter based on designated vehicle momentary velocity curve as a function of time, have been presented . It also quotes conditions of tests of the speed limiter installed in the RENAULT type 24 FP truck of N3 category using the device's CORRSYS-DATRON, that have been conducted at the Motor Transport Institute‘s Vehicles Type-Approval & Testing Department. The diagrams illustrate relationship between speed and time, obtained during tests. The work has been summed up with the analysis of the tests results.

Opis:
Several different methods have been used to analyze the marine propellers. In this paper a boundary element method (BEM) for modelling steady hydrodynamic performance of a contra-rotating propeller (CRP) has been developed. The potential flow across the front and rear propellers have been considered. By calculating the induced flow, the interaction between two propellers is studied. This method has been applied to a typical CRP. The results are included in the form of the hydrodynamic performance coefficients, total thrust and torques. Numerical calculations indicate that the predicted hydrodynamic performance shows good conformity with experimental results.

The aim of this study was to clarify how human movement speed and pants elasticity affect the athletic performance of knee joint protection by testing pants with different elastic properties: CP1 (tight pants) and CP2&CP3 (elastic compression pants), which reinforce the knee joint. In addition, CS (cotton sport pants) was developed as a control garment. Three subjects wore CP1, CP2, CP3 and CS while running on the treadmill at three kinds of human movement speed. A three-dimensional motion capture instrument was used to capture the three-dimensional trajectory of the marked points of lower limbs. As a result, the influence of the movement speed on the kinematic parameters (AKJ & gait cycle) was more obvious than the fabric elasticity. If elastic pants are worn during running, the change of AKJ will be stable with the increase of speed. When non-elastic pants are worn, the effect is opposite. Not only that, elastic compression pants are efficient in reducing the motion amplitude of the knee joint during the suspension period as far as 41°, making it highly practical in terms of stability. That is, the elastic fabric can protect the joints when the lower limbs are in motion. Moreover, with the increase of speed and elasticity, the elastic pants can reduce the gait cycle by up to 22% compared with non-elastic pants alone. Through the kinematics mechanism of human joints, these findings may translate into an effect on protective performance and a reduction in sport injuries. Therefore, it is necessary to wear elastic pants, especially compression pants, when running at higher speed, as the average gait cycle gradually decreases. This research shows that the knee joint protection functions of elastic compression garments differ according to the level of elasticity and differential movement speed, providing theoretical support for designing and producing elastic compression pants. It also acts as a guide for the research of lower limb joint protection.

Opis:
The paper presents several problems of designing trunk-road bypasses of towns, which can be very helpful in improving their traffic performance. Such roads perform supplementary functions to the operation of network of motorways and express-roads constructed in Poland over the last decade. These problems include: selection of the cross section, selection and design of intersections and interchanges on bypasses, safety and traffic operation problems. The authors highlight the advantages of bypasses and point out some errors, which can be seen in the operation stage, basing on research and observation of 8 bypasses. In the paper traffic operation and road safety analyses for Zyrardow bypass are presented. The final part of the paper gives conclusions and recommendations for 2+1 bypass use and design.

Performance is one of the most important indicators of quality of software. It plays a significant role not only for business websites and apps, but in case of map components and applications, especially for mobile devices. The aim of the paper is to measure performance of map applications on mobile devices. The performance testing was run on a prototype of an interactive map component of the zoom-lens type using selected web applications. Speed Index (measurement unit) reached the value of 1601 milliseconds, and Performance Score obtained the highest possible value (100 units). A high value of Lighthouse Performance Score was also noted (98 units). Study showed that satisfying measurement results of indices in relation to the time of loading of the component in the browser window are associated with a small size of the component. In case of small components, which enhance the functionality of map websites and apps, it is recommended to compress all parts of the component, regardless of the results of the performance tests.
Wydajność jest jednym z najważniejszych wyznaczników jakości oprogramowania. Wydajność ma istotne znaczenie nie tylko dla witryn i aplikacji biznesowych, ale także w przypadku komponentów i aplikacji mapowych, w szczególności na urządzeniach mobilnych. Celem pracy jest pomiar wydajności aplikacji mapowej na urządzeniach mobilnych. Testom wydajności poddano prototyp interaktywnego komponentu mapowego typu „zoom-lens”. Testy przeprowadzono przy pomocy wybranych aplikacji internetowych. Wskaźnik Speed Index (pomiar jednostkowy) osiągnął wartość 1601 milisekund, a wskaźnik Performance Score osiągną największą możliwą wartość (100 jednostek). Odnotowano także dużą wartość wskaźnika Lighthouse Performance Score (98 jednostek). Badania pokazały, że zadowalające wyniki pomiaru wskaźników związanych z czasem wczytywania komponentu w oknie przeglądarki wynikają z niewielkiego rozmiaru komponentu. W przypadku niewielkich komponentów, które rozszerzają funkcjonalność witryn i aplikacji mapowych wskazana jest kompresja wszystkich część składowych komponentu, niezależnie od wyników testów wydajności.

The high-speed of train (HST) in combination with the high carrier frequency of HST systems leads to the severe inter carrier interference (ICI) in the HST orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (HST-OFDM) systems. To avoid the complexity in OFDM receiver design for ICI eliminations, the OFDM system parameters such as symbol duration, signal bandwidth, and the number of subcarriers should be chosen appropriately. This paper aims to propose a process of HST-OFDM system performance investigation to determine these parameters in order to enhance spectral efficiency and meet a given quality-of-service (QoS) level. The signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) has been used as a figure of merit to analyze the system performance instead of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as most of recent research studies. Firstly, using the non-stationary geometry-based stochastic HST channel model, the SINR of each subcarrier has been derived for different speeds of the train, signal bandwidths, and number of subcarriers. Consequently, the system capacity has been formulated as the sum of all the single channel capacity from each sub-carrier. The constraints on designing HST-OFDM system parameters have been thoughtfully analyzed using the obtained expressions of SINR and capacity. Finally, by analyzing the numerical results, the system parameters can be found for the design of HST-OFDM systems under different speeds of train. The proposed process can be used to provide hints to predict performance of HST communication systems before doing further high cost implementations as hardware designs.

Opis:
Assessing software quality attributes (such as performance, reliability, and security) from source code is of the utmost importance. The performance of a software system can be improved by its parallel and distributed execution. The aim of the parallel and distributed execution is to speed up by providing the maximum possible concurrency in executing the distributed segments. It is a well known fact that distributing a program cannot be always caused speeding up the execution of it; in some cases, this distribution can have negative effects on the running time of the program. Therefore, before distributing a source code, it should be specified whether its distribution could cause maximum possible concurrency or not. The existing methods and tools cannot achieve this aim from the source code. In this paper, we propose a mathematical relationship for object oriented programs that statically analyze the program by verifying the type of synchronous and asynchronous calls inside the source code. Then, we model the invocations of the software methods by Discrete Time Markov Chains (DTMC). Using the properties of DTMC and the proposed mathematical relationship, we will determine whether or not the source code can be distributed on homogeneous processors. The experimental results showed that we can specify whether the program is distributable or not, before deploying it on the distributed systems.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań bezczujnikowego napędu indukcyjnego z prądowym estymatorem prędkości i strumienia wirnika. Napęd bezczujnikowy został wyposażony w dodatkowy estymator reaktancji magnesującej, wykorzystujący matematyczną interpolację charakterystyki magnesowania silnika. Przeanalizowano właściwości dynamiczne takiego układu napędowego ze sterowaniem wektorowym w szerokim zakresie zmian prędkości zadanej. Przedstawiono wyniki badań symulacyjnych i eksperymentalnych.

Raster publications provide one alternative to database-based technologies, and despite their limitations, they may be used in the presentation of data having spatial reference. Image browser performance can have a particular impact on the comfort of its use. The aim of the present work is to analyse the relationships between the degree of raster compression and the performance of the map application. The research was carried out in an informal manner, under conditions of typical use, in the form of ad-hoc tests. The measurement was performed using three applications that automate tests: (1) Cloudinary Website Speed Test Image Analysis Tool, (2) GTmetrix, and (3) Dareboost. It has been shown that in applications based on raster maps, which are of an illustrative, temporary and at the same time ad-hoc nature (ad-hoc maps), maintaining high quality images at the expense of application performance is not justified.
Pewną alternatywą dla technologii opartych na bazach danych są publikacje rastrowe, które pomimo swoich ograniczeń mogą znaleźć zastosowanie w prezentacji danych mających odniesienie przestrzenne. Wydajność przeglądarki obrazów może mieć szczególny wpływ na komfort jej użytkowania. Celem pracy jest analiza zależności występujących między stopniem kompresji rastra a wydajnością aplikacji mapowej. Badania przeprowadzono w sposób nieformalny, w warunkach zwykłego użytkowania, w formie testów ad-hoc. Pomiar wykonano przy pomocy trzech aplikacji automatyzujących testy: (1) Cloudinary Website Speed Test Image Analysis Tool, (2) GTmetrix oraz (3) Dareboost. Wykazano, że w aplikacjach bazujących na mapach rastrowych, które mają charakter poglądowy, tymczasowy i jednocześnie doraźny (typu ad-hoc maps) zachowanie wysokiej jakości obrazów kosztem wydajności aplikacji nie znajduje uzasadnienia.

The pole phase modulation (PPM) technique is an effective method to extend speed range and torque capabilities for an integrated starter and hybrid electric vehicles applications. In this paper, the five pole-phase combination types of a multiphase induction motor (IM) with 36 stator slots and 36 stator conductors are presented and compared quantitatively by using the time-stepping finite element method (TS-FEM). The 36 stator conductors of the proposed multiphase IM are fed by a 36 leg inverter and the current phase angle and amplitude of each stator conductor can be controlled independently. This paper focuses on the winding connection, the PPM technique and the performance comparative analysis of each pole-phase combination types of the proposed multiphase IM. The flux distribution, air-gap flux density, output torque, core losses and efficiency of five pole-phase combination types have been investigated.

This paper presents an estimator-based speed sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) method for induction machines, where the state estimator is based on a self-contained, non-linear model. This model characterises both the electrical and the mechanical behaviours of the machine and describes them with seven state variables. The state variables are estimated from the measured stator currents and from the known stator voltages by using an estimator algorithm. An important aspect is that one of the state variables is the load torque and, hence, it is also estimated by the estimator. Using this feature, the applied estimator-based speed sensorless control algorithm may be operated adequately besides varying load torque. In this work, two different variants of the control algorithm are developed based on the extended and the unscented Kalman filters (EKF, UKF) as state estimators. The dynamic performance of these variants is tested and compared using experiments and simulations. Results show that the variants have comparable performance in general, but the UKF-based control provides better performance if a stochastically varying load disturbance is present.

The conditions for accurately intercepting hypersonic vehicles by low-speed interceptors in the terminal guidance process are examined, considering the general form of a guidance scheme. First, based on the concept of the engagement geometry, three interception scenarios are established considering different manoeuvring configurations of the interceptors and hypersonic vehicle. Second, the boundary conditions for intercepting hypersonic vehicles (with speeds higher than those of the interceptors) are specified for the three scenarios, considering several factors: the speed, path angle, line-of-sight angle, and available overload of the interceptor; path angle and manoeuvrability of the hypersonic vehicle; and relative distance between the interceptor and vehicle. A series of simulations are performed to clarify the influence of each factor on the interception performance in the three interception scenarios. The challenges associated with accurately intercepting hypersonic vehicles by low-speed interceptors are summarised, and several recommendations for designing guidance laws are presented.

Opis:
The article presents control strategy for the operation of a variable-speed wind energy conversion system with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The electrical system of wind turbine consists of PMSG, Switch Mode Rectifier (SMR) and Grid Side Converter (GSC). The SMR converter is composed of an uncontrolled diode bridge and a DC/DC boost converter. In the control of the DC/DC boost converter the algorithm of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) has been applied. The MPPT algorithm allows the wind turbine to operate at maximum value of power coefficient in a wide range of wind speed. In the control of Grid Side Converter a method of Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) has been applied. High efficiency and accuracy of this control system were confirmed by simulation studies.

Opis:
The paper presents an idea to utilize crankshaft's angular speed variation and its derivative for monitoring of trouble of diesel engine combustion quality. Measurement of instantaneous angular speed, long term recording and archive of values is enable by modern programmable logic controllers. Measurement of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) is done using optical sensor and toothed disc. Advantage of this method is simple installation and constant signal. Collected data can be processed on board, basing on MS Excel formulas. Observation of changes of instantaneous speed and acceleration can not replace Main Effective Pressure measurement or vibration monitoring, but tool for early warning. When a signal of deteriorating of engine performance is obtain, more accurate diagnostic can be implemented. Expected final result will be elimination of engine's cycle's irregularity. Proposed method is at early stage of investigation and further steps to prove its utility and to develop concluding rules are to be conducted. In the paper are presented preliminary analysis of some bunches of data collected from two bulk carriers, operating in similar conditions.
W artykule przedstawiono ideę wykorzystania funkcji zmian prędkości kątowej wału korbowego oraz jej pochodnej do monitorowania zakłóceń równomierności pracy cylindrów. Pomiar prędkości chwilowej, zapis i archiwizacja wartości jest możliwa dzięki zastosowaniu sterownika programowalnego. Zalety powyższej metody to łatwość instalacji systemu oraz uzyskiwanie bieżącego sygnału. Zebrane dane mogą być obrabiane na statku, w oparciu o formuły zapisane w programie MS Excel. Obserwacja zmian chwilowej prędkości i przyspieszenia kątowego nie zastąpi typowych pomiarów takich jak pomiar ciśnienia indykowanego lub monitoring drgań, jest jednak doskonałym narzędziem do wczesnego informowania i ostrzegania. Przedstawiona metoda jest na wczesnym etapie badań i wymaga dalszych analiz w celu wykazania jej użyteczności diagnostycznej oraz określenia reguł wnioskowania. W artykule przedstawiono wstępne analizy pakietów danych pochodzących z dwóch masowców operujących w podobnych warunkach.

The longitudinal motion characteristics of a slender trimaran equipped with and without a T-foil near the bow are investigated by experimental and numerical methods. Computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) method is used in this study. The seakeeping characteristics such as heave, pitch and vertical acceleration in head regular waves are analyzed in various wave conditions. Numerical simulations have been validated by comparisons with experimental tests. The influence of large wave amplitudes and size of T-foil on the longitudinal motion of trimaran are analyzed. The present systematic study demonstrates that the numerical results are in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The research implied that the longitudinal motion response values are greatly reduced with the use of T-foil.

The aim of the present study was to examine how various playing positions and opponent team ranking affect the covered distances and the acceleration and decelerations profile of a team during 2018-19 Greek SuperLeague. StatSport GPS system recorded in match-play real-time both the players’ covered distances (m) and the number of acceleration/deceleration runs (n) in zones from 3 m/s2 to 10 m/s2. The descriptive statistics showed that the players’ mean covered distances were 10289 m per match. The MANOVA revealed significant differences of the players’ covered distances in all intensity zones in relation to their playing positions (F(12, 513.567)=41.862; p=0.000) and the opponent team ranking (F(3,189)=3.687; p=0.013). Furthermore, no significant interactions were observed between the playing positions and the opponent team ranking (F(12, 500.339)=1.149; p=0.318). Moreover, no significant differences were recorded regarding the opponent team ranking with the amount of accelerations (F(1,189)=0.501; p=0.480) and decelerations (F(1,189)=1.342; p=0.248). Summarizing, the current study showed the high-demanding competitive performance of midfielders, full backs and forwards regardless the standing of the opponent teams. Hence, the team’s training must include special stimuli of aerobic and high-intensity workouts according to the players’ playing positions in the match.

The evaluation of system performance plays an increasingly important role in the reliability analysis of cyber-physical systems. Factors of external instability affect the evaluation results in complex systems. Taking the running gear in high-speed trains as an example, its complex operating environment is the most critical factor affecting the performance evaluation design. In order to optimize the evaluation while improving accuracy, this paper develops a performance evaluation method based on slow feature analysis and a hidden Markov model (SFA-HMM). The utilization of SFA can screen out the slowest features as HMM inputs, based on which a new HMM is established for performance evaluation of running gear systems. In addition to directly classical performance evaluation for running gear systems of high-speed trains, the slow feature statistic is proposed to detect the difference in the system state through test data, and then eliminate the error evaluation of the HMM in the stable state. In addition, indicator planning and status classification of the data are performed through historical information and expert knowledge. Finally, a case study of the running gear system in high-speed trains is discussed. After comparison, the result shows that the proposed method can enhance evaluation performance.

The paper presents elaborated model of marine diesel engine injector as series of functional blocks notation by means rectangles. The each block is contains determinate number of entrances and exits. The some exits values of one block are entrances values of other blocks. The elaborated model takes qualification of changeable values of pressures in working chamber of cylinder and course variation of pressure in closed space of injection pump and injector. It takes an aspect of course of pressure values as working parameter at exit. There have been simulated for different load of engine on pressure course in each space of injection apparatus and in cylinder during working cycle on subordination crank angle. In article have been formulate of mathematical dependence and utilization of experimental dates, with enabled calculation of interest parameters and for indexes for simulated process. The model takes into consideration the properties of the fuel injected, construction parameters of the injection systems and temperature and temperature course of the working medium.
W artykule przedstawiono opracowany model wtryskiwacza okrętowego silnika spalinowego, jako zbioru bloków funkcjonalnych oznaczonych za pomocą prostokątów, z których każdy zawiera określoną liczbę wejść i wyjść. Określone wielkości wyjściowe jednego bloku są wielkościami wejściowymi innego bloku. Opracowany model obejmuje określenie wartości ciśnień zmieniających się w komorze roboczej cylindra i przebiegu zmian ciśnienia w przestrzeniach zamkniętych pompy wtryskowe i wtryskiwacza. Podejmuje on aspekt przebiegu wartości ciśnienia, jako roboczego parametru wyjściowego. Zasymulowano dla różnych wartości obciążenia silnika na przebieg ciśnienia w poszczególnych przestrzeniach aparatury wtryskowej i w cylindrze w czasie cyklu roboczego w zależności od kąta obrotu wału korbowego silnika. W artykule sformułowano zależności matematyczne i wykorzystano dane eksperymentalne, umożliwiające obliczenie interesujących parametrów i wskaźników charakterystycznych dla symulowanego procesu. Model uwzględnia właściwości wtryskiwanego paliwa, parametry konstrukcyjne sytemu wtryskowego oraz ciśnienie i temperaturę czynnika roboczego

This paper investigates operation of a high-speed eddy-current brake designed and manufactured for testing high-speed electric motors. The system is modeled using a three-dimensional time-stepping nonlinear finite elements with the aim of assessing performance of different rotors. The rotor thickness and the impact of copper coating on the brake performance are analysed. The computations compare well with partial measurements carried out on the laboratory test-stand.
W artykule zawarto analizę hamownicy wiroprądowej zaprojektowanej oraz wykonanej do badań silników elektrycznych wysokoobrotowych. Celem pracy, jest zbadanie wpływu budowy wirnika na charakterystykę mechaniczną hamownicy. Analizie poddano wpływ grubości wirnika oraz wprowadzenie warstwy powierzchniowej z materiału o znacznie większej przewodności – miedzi. Obliczenia przeprowadzono przy zastosowaniu trójwymiarowego nieliniowego modelu polowego. Wyniki obliczeń zweryfikowano na stanowisku pomiarowym.

Opis:
Transportation of passengers and freight on medium and long distances is currently dominated by three basic branches: road, rail and air. One can assume than at least since the 1980s a really groundbreaking innovation has not taken place in any of these industries. The development of electric cars industry and tests of autonomous cars could be considered an exception. However, this does not change the fact that it will not eliminate other disadvantages of cars, i.e. relatively low speed, exposure to congestion, etc. In 2013 Elon Musk proposed assumptions for a new mean of transportation – the Hyperloop: a steel tube with very low air pressure in it stretched on pylons between cities, in which special pods move on air bearings at speeds up to 1220 kph. This article attempts to analyze basic economic performance parameters of existing means of transportation: road, rail and air on selected routes in Poland and to compare them with available data, which now is a bit more precise than this published in Elon Musk’s white paper, concerning the predicted effectiveness of the Hyperloop system. It hence tries to prove whether Hyperloop could become a major disruptive transportation innovation, from the point of view of its economic fundamentals. To do that two possible measures of transportation system’s performance are proposed and discussed, both based on cost-effectiveness analysis model: 1) Cost of velocity for passenger and 2) Total yearly cost per kilometer per passenger. Calculations for the first one show that high-speed rail could become competitive to road transportation, while Hyperloop might be even 6-7 times cheaper than car, from the point of view of a client. The results of the second one tell that road, conventional rail and Hyperloop (based on assumptions according to currently available data) seem to reach a similar level of cost-effectiveness, while high-speed rail is expected to be ca. 50% more expensive.
Transport pasażerów i towarów na średnich i długich dystansach zdominowany jest obecnie przez trzy podstawowe gałęzie: transport drogowy, kolejowy i lotniczy. Można przyjąć, że co najmniej od lat osiemdziesiątych XX w. w żadnej z wymienionych wyżej gałęzi transportu nie miała miejsca naprawdę przełomowa innowacja technologiczna. Wyjątek stanowi rozwój branży samochodów elektrycznych oraz testy samochodów autonomicznych. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że powyższe rozwiązania nie wyeliminują pozostałych wad samochodu, tj. stosunkowo niskiej prędkości, podatności na korki, etc. W 2013 roku Elon Musk przedstawił założenia dla nowego środka transportu - Hyperloop: stalowej rury o bardzo niskim ciśnieniu rozciągniętej na pylonach pomiędzy miastami, w której specjalne kapsuły poruszają się na poduszkach powietrznych z prędkością nawet 1220 km/h. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu dokonanie oceny podstawowych parametrów efektywnościowych istniejących środków transportu drogowego, kolejowego i lotniczego na wybranych trasach w Polsce i zestawienie ich z dostępnymi danymi na temat przewidywanej efektywności systemu Hyperloop.

Surface colour of cashew kernels is one of the physical attributes used to determine the quality in cashew processing industry. Although manual grading of cashew kernels is followed in the Indian cashew processing system, the mechanised colour grading machine is gaining importance due to shortage of skilled man power. In the study a high speed colour sorter suitable for cashew kernel is evaluated for its performance in terms of operational capacity and purity index. Certain grades of whole kernel and broken kernel grades with different proportions are used. Estimation of the operational capacity revealed significant differences among the grades investigated, with higher value of 156 kg h-1 for the largest kernel (WW 210) and 52 kg h-1 for the smallest kernels (BB). Purity index showed a dependence on kernel size and was influenced by proportion of the kernels. Cost economics indicated that mechanical grading saves 40% of the total cost incurred for manual grading of cashew kernels.
Barwa powierzchni orzechów nerkowca jest jedną z cech fizycznych, określających ich jakość w przemyśle przetwórczym. W Indiach dominuje sortowanie ręczne w przetwórstwie orzechów nerkowca, ale zmechanizowane systemy separacji zyskują na znaczeniu z uwagi na brak wykwalifikowanej siły roboczej. W pracy oceniono wydajność operacyjną i indeks czystości separatora barwnego do orzechów nerkowca. W badaniach uwzględniono wybrane kategorie orzechów całych oraz rozdrobnionych, w różnych proporcjach. Wydajność operacyjna charakteryzowała się znaczącym zróżnicowaniem różnych wielkości orzechów nerkowca, przy czym wyższą wartość 156 kg·h-1 otrzymano dla największych orzechów (WW 210), a wartość 52 kg·h-1 dla orzechów najmniejszych (BB). Indeks czystości zależał od wielkości oraz udziału orzechów małych i dużych. Zastosowanie separatora barwnego pozwala zmniejszyć koszty separacji o 40% w porównaniu do kosztów sortowania ręcznego.

In order to improve and accelerate the speed of image integration, an optimal and intelligent method for multi-focus image fusion is presented in this paper. Based on particle swarm optimization and quantum theory, quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) intelligent search strategy is introduced in salience analysis of a contrast visual masking system, combined with the segmentation technique. The superiority of QPSO is quantum parallelism. It has stronger search ability and quicker convergence speed. When compared with other classical or novel fusion methods, several metrics for image definition are exploited to evaluate the performance of all the adopted methods objectively. Experiments are performed on both artificial multi-focus images and digital camera multi-focus images. The results show that QPSO algorithm is more efficient than non-subsampled contourlet transform, genetic algorithm, binary particle swarm optimization, etc. The simulation results demonstrate that QPSO is a satisfying image fusion method with high accuracy and high speed.

In the paper the influence of the chosen sensors faults (rotor speed and stator current sensors) to the properties of induction motor drive system working in the Direct Field Oriented Control structure (DFOC) were tested. Simulations results carried out in Matlab/SimPowerSystem software. Study results contains an analysis of the state variables such as: mechanical and estimated speed, electromagnetic torque, stator's phase currents and rotor flux. Additionally the usage of these signals to develop faults detection algorithms were tested.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the influence of different types of surfaces on the sprint test results. 33 male football players from two age categories - U15 and U18 - performed sprint tests (7 distances between 5 and 30m) and a 150m shuttle run test on three types of surfaces: natural grass [n], a synthetic surface [s] and a rubber surface [r]. The longer distance a player covers, the more likely it is that the importance of the type of running surface will be noticed. The rubber surface diminishes the negative effects of changeable factors on the reliability of the tests and therefore, in our opinion, is recommended for control tests and especially for longitudinal tests. Comparing the results of running speed tests performed on different surfaces and especially in different weather conditions is unjustified.

Przedmiotem pracy jest analiza doświadczalna wpływu wybranych metod indeksowania na czas wykonania polecenia SQL. Badaniom poddano bazę testową wydzieloną z rzeczywistego systemu bankowego. Pomiary czasu wykonania zapytania SQL wykonano dla tabel zawierających do 1000000 rekordów. Badania przeprowadzono dla tabel nie zawierających indeksów oraz tabel zawierających indeksy. Do badań wykorzystano relacyjny system zarządzania bazą danych oparty na Oracle 9. Wyniki badań doświadczalnych pozwoliły na modernizację pracy systemu bankowego.
The subject of the study is to analyse the impact of selected experimental methods of crawling on the execution time of SQL commands. The study involved test database separate from the actual banking system. Measurements runtime SQL queries made for tables containing up to 1000000 records. The study was conducted for tables that do not contain indexes and tables with indexes. The study used relational database management system based on Oracle. The experimental results have enabled the modernization work of the banking system. Analysis of the results showed that the use of indices in most of the cases can significantly reduce the waiting time for the results of SQL queries, especially for tables containing a large amount of records. In the cases studied to reduce the time it was even more than 6few hundred times.

W artykule przedstawiono podstawy teoretyczne i wyniki badań rozdrabniania wybranej klasy ziarnowej kamienia wapiennego w warunkach burzliwej warstwy fluidalnej młyna strumieniowo-fluidyzacyjnego. Celem badań było ustalenie wpływu wartości prędkości obrotowej wirnika klasyfikatora przepływowego na uzyskaną wydajność młyna i uziarnienie produktu mielenia. Wyznaczone masy i rozkłady ziarnowe poszczególnych produktów mielenia umożliwiły ocenę jakości i skuteczności przeprowadzonych prób rozdrabniania.
The necessity of applying materials with high degree of fineness in the contemporary technologies require used to modern technology in mechanical comminution of different substances, which will assure demanded particle size distribution of grinding product. The scientific performances are mostly aimed at the search for new work conditions of industrial grinding devices, which should guarantee parameters and fineness of grinding products and should decrease energy consuming of grinding and improve environmental protection. All the above seems to be met in the researches of granular materials grinding in the high-energetic fluidized bed. The fluidized jet grinding relies on keeping up a turbulent fluidization in the grinding chamber of mill, which is a result of collisions of air counter-fluxes. They make it possible to obtain high-energetic fluidized bed, which in turn ensures an effective comminution of tested granular material. The state of pulsatory fluidization is created in the certain surroundings of an axial zone of the fluidized bed. The state of fountain fluidization is created in the axial zone of the fluidized bed, which is characterised by carryover of grains in the zone of high velocities in the centre core of grinding chamber, then by gravitational falling of coarse fraction near walls and by carrying away of the small fraction by the flowing gas into the separation system. The theoretical basis and experimental results for the fluidized jet grinding of granular materials are presented in the paper. The researches were performed on a laboratory fluidized bed opposed jet mill. The experiment contained grinding tests of selected narrow size fraction of limestone in turbulent fluidized layer conditions. The aim of researches was to explain the influence of the values of rotational speed of flow classifier rotor on the efficiency of mill and the particle size distribution of grinding product. The determined masses and particle size distribution of grinding products make it possible to estimate the quality and the efficiency of the carried out fluidized jet grinding tests.

The paper presents an analysis of surface roughness following milling of thin-walled components made of aluminium alloy EN AW-2024, taking into account the three different machining strategies and rolling direction of semi-finished product in the form of a plate combined with the milling feed. The aims of the study were to compare the results of machining using various technologies and show the best of them, providing the smallest roughness of the component following milling, as well as to determine the impact of rolling direction of the plate on the quality of the end surface. Measurement results of surface roughness parameters were provided information about the progress of the machining process.

W pracy przedstawiono charakterystyki eksploatacyjne silników indukcyjnych małej mocy, o rdzeniach wykonanych z różnych gatunków blachy elektrotechnicznej, pracujących przy zasilaniu z sieci i z przemiennika częstotliwości napięciem o częstotliwości 100 oraz 200 Hz. Obliczenia zostały wykonane z wykorzystaniem metod obwodowo-polowych oraz metodami obwodowymi, z uwzględnieniem zjawisk nieliniowych oraz strat dodatkowych w rdzeniu i uzwojeniach silnika. W obliczeniach wykorzystano wyznaczone doświadczalnie dla badanych silników charakterystyki strat mechanicznych, a także pomierzone charakterystyki magnesowania stosowanych blach elektrotechnicznych oraz charakterystyki stratności blach w funkcji indukcji magnetycznej wyznaczone dla zakresu częstotliwości do 2000 Hz.
The paper presents operational characteristics of a small induction motor with the stator core made of amorphous laminations, supplied from mains or frequency inverter at 100 and 200 Hz. Calculations were performed using field-circuit and equivalent circuit approaches taking account of non-linearity and additional losses both in the core and in the windings. Data for mechanical losses, magnetisation curve and magnetic losses of the amorphous material was obtained experimentally; magnetic measurements were taken as a function of magnetic flux density in the frequency range up to 2,000 Hz.

This paper discusses a model reference adaptive sliding-mode control of the sensorless vector controlled induction motor drive in a wide speed range. The adaptive speed controller uses on-line trained fuzzy neural network, which enables very fast tracking of the changing speed reference signal. This adaptive sliding-mode neuro-fuzzy controller (ASNFC) is used as a speed controller in the direct rotor-field oriented control (DRFOC) of the induction motor (IM) drive structure. Connective weights of the controller are trained on-line according to the error between the actual speed of the drive and the reference model output signal. The rotor flux and speed of the vector controlled induction motor are estimated using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) – type estimator. Presented simulation results are verified by experimental tests performed on the laboratory-rig with DSP controller.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) has been used since last over two decades as a measure of performance in manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, enough, application of OEE in mining and excavation industry has not been duly adopted. In this paper an effort has been made to identify the OEE for performance evaluation of Bucket based Excavating, Loading and Transport (BELT) equipment. The conceptual model of OEE, as used in the manufacturing industries, has been revised to adapt to the BELT equipment. The revised and adapted model considered the operational time, speed and bucket capacity utilization losses as the key OEE components for evaluating the performance of BELT equipment. To illustrate the efficacy of the devised model on real-time basis, a case study was undertaken on the biggest single bucket excavating equipment – the dragline, in a large surface coal mine. One-year data was collected in order to evaluate the proposed OEE model.
Podejście oparte o całościową ocenę efektywności używane jest od ponad dwóch dekad w analizach skuteczności działania urządzeń w przemyśle wytwórczym. Niestety podejście to nie zostało szeroko przyjęte w przemyśle górniczym. W pracy tej podjęto próbę dokonania całościowej oceny efektywności pracy układu złożonego ze sprzętu do urabiania, załadunku (koparki) oraz transportu. Model koncepcyjny podejścia całościowej oceny stosowany dotychczas w przemyśle wytwórczym został zaadaptowany by uwzględniać specyfikę systemów urabiania, ładowania i transportu. Odpowiednio zmodyfikowany model uwzględnia czas pracy układu, tempo pracy, spadek ładowności koparki i spowodowane w ten sposób straty, umożliwiając dokonanie całościowej oceny wydajności pracy systemu. Poprawność opracowanego modelu działającego w czasie rzeczywistym zbadano na przykładzie systemu do urabiania, załadunku i transportu wykorzystywanego w dużej kopalni odkrywkowej węgla. Do oceny poprawności modelu wykorzystano zebrane dane obejmujące cały rok pracy urządzeń.

This paper deals with the results of studying the effect of trim on the performance of series cargo ship 12500DWT in full scale at two operating conditions by using the RANSE method. The Body Force Propeller method is used to simulate a rotating propeller behind the ship. The numerical predicted results at the ballast condition were verified and validated with sea trial data. The ship’s engine power curves for different trim conditions at two operating conditions were carried out to produce a data source to evaluate the effect of trim on the performance of the 12500DWT cargo ship. The results indicate that if the ship operates under optimum trim conditions, this can decrease the ship’s engine power in a range from 2.5 to 4.5% depending on different loading conditions and ship speeds. Finally, the paper also provides detailed differences in flow around the ship due to trim variation to explain the physical phenomenon of changing ship performance.

This study uses TruckSim™ to model disc brakes and drum brakes on a fully loaded truck semi-trailer to study the performance of each brake type as downgrades and speeds vary. The brake performance is measured based on braking distance. A simplified economic comparison based on life cycle cost analysis to determine which road and vehicle conditions give rise to the cost-effectiveness of disc brakes is performed. The studies suggest that disc brakes shorten braking distances by 10-20%. They also suggest that the percentage reduction in braking distance as speed increases and downgrade gets steeper is approximately 12-19%. Evidence is provided that trucking companies operating their vehicles in steep terrain and at high speeds with disc brakes could benefit from 12-80% in long-term cost savings. Finally, at the societal level, by preventing crashes arising from rear-end collisions and runaway truck incidents, disc brakes save at least $649 million annually.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between shuttlecock velocity during a badminton forehand smash with and without jump (VmaxWJ and VmaxNJ), strength of upper limb muscles, vertical jump height and to analyze differences in these parameters for each gender. Methods: The study examined members of the Polish National Badminton Team seven women and seven men. A special torque meter was used to assess the strength of the upper limb muscles. Vertical jumps were performed on an AMTI force plate. Shuttlecock velocity was measured using Vicon motion capture system. Results: Differences between the right and left limbs were observed in all muscle groups except shoulder flexion for both genders. The results of all measured parameters: torques, height of countermovement and spike jump (HACMJ, HCMJ, HSPJ), VmaxWJ and VmaxNJ, were greater for men than for women. No statistically significant differences were found between VmaxWJ (men: 83.27 ± 4.83 m/s; women: 67.57 ± 4.21 m/s) and VmaxNJ (men: 84.19 ± 6.05 m/s; women: 69.70 ± 6.53 m/s) within the same gender. Positive correlations were found between both HCMJ and HSPJ regarding VmaxWJ in men; the height of shuttlecock impact in jump smash (HWJ) and HSPJ in women; proving the importance of jumping ability in badminton. Negative correlations were found between HWJ and VmaxWJ for both genders. Conclusions: The jump before smash is not used in order to hit the shuttle from the highest point, but to gain time to correctly prepare the phase of stroke while being in the air.
