The author starts his considerations with a remark on the human person as a unique kind of reality – an embodied being with a Trinitarian structure. He claims that we must account for human nature as it is and educate the human person accordingly. He focuses on six key areas which need further exploration for the renewal of religious education: (1) religious education and the human person, (2) religious education for the body, (3) religious education for the heart, (4) religious education for the mind, (5) religious education and moral formation, and (6) the nature of faith.

Opis:
It would appear that the whole Catholic educational project faces an important decision regarding its future development. Decades of support for the vulgarised Rahnerian anthropological vision is now serving as a conduit for the Re-contextualisation perspectives of Boeve and his collaborators, and a parallel effort to re-define the meaning of a successful Catholic educational enterprise. Despite the clear findings of contemporary educational research of eminent and respected theorists such as Hattie, Sweller, Kirschner, Clarke and Lillard (all of whom support a narrowing of the field of study of novice learners), determined efforts are still being made in the field of catechesis to emphasise the symbolic over concrete real; a disparagement of content in favour of process. This continues to find its most damaging application in the denigration of a permanently valid and divinely revealed Deposit of Faith (admittedly, one which continues to be subject to ever deepening understanding). Contemporary students are encouraged to exchange this patrimony for a brave new world of moral and intellectual autonomy, whereby they are encouraged to opt for their own inexpertly constructed, personally validated version of reality, made in their own image and according to their own taste. It can be argued, of course, that such a worldview is neither brave nor new. Students are merely being asked to situate themselves outside the hermeneutic circle of the Catholic faith, and told that they should make up their own minds regarding what they will accept – all based on their own independent inquiries. Catholic schools now face the choice of grounding themselves in an effective epistemology, supported now both by the traditions of the Church and the findings of modern educational research, which is capable of mediating the Christian message with clarity. Further work needs to be done to articulate the practical implications of such a desirable prospect. Alternatively, Catholic schools may choose to adopt a Recontexualising trajectory and widen the gulf between themselves and their traditional roots still further.

Opis:
In this study, rubber seed/shea butter oil was used to formulate core oil. The formulated core oil was characterised. D-optimal mixture design was used for multi response optimisation of the functional properties of rubber seed-shea butter coil oil. Desirable values for some responses might be obtained from a factor combination while for others responses not so desirable values. Through multiple response optimisations, a factor setting that gives the desirable values for all responses was obtained. The selected optimum mixture setting for the formulated core oil is 65.937% Rubber seed and 34.063% Shea butter oil at desirability of 0.924. Under the optimum condition the functional properties of the core oil was found to be 39.57KN/M2, 626.85KN/M2, 36.63KN/M2, 593.906KN/M2, 412.605 and 167.309s for Green Compressive Strength, Dry Compressive Strength, Green Tensile Strength, Dry Tensile Strength, Permeability and Collapsibility respectively. The optimum conditions were validated with less than 0.2% error. The functional properties of the formulated core oil was compared to the functional properties of linseed core oil. It was found that rubber seed-shea butter core oil can be used for producing cores suitable for Aluminium casting.

Opis:
Experiments to determine the effect of seed size, watering interval and defoliation on growth and dry matter attributes of seedlings of shea butter tree were conducted at Makurdi, Nigeria, from July 2010 to April, 2012. In the first experiment, treatments were made up of three seed size categories described as small (5-10g), medium (11-15g) and large (16-20g) and three watering intervals of 3, 6 and 9 days. In the second experiment, treatments comprised three watering intervals of 3, 6 and 9 days and three levels of defoliation – 0, 50 and 100%. In both experiments, factorial combinations of the treatments were laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three times. Results of analysis of variance showed that in the first experiment seed size significantly influenced root length with the medium and large seeds producing seedlings with comparatively longer roots than the small seeds. The most frequently watered seedlings (3 and 6 days) produced more leaves than those watered less frequently (9 days). Seed size influenced dry weight of root and total (whole plant) dry weight with the medium and large seeds recording significantly higher values than the small seeds. Watering interval however did not significantly influence any of the other traits. Seed weight exerted significant influence on amount of dry matter partitioned to the stem and the root. More dry matter was partitioned to the stem by the small seeds. Conversely, medium and large seeds allocated more dry matter to the root than to the stem. In the second experiment, defoliation level only influenced total fresh weight, dry weight of root and total dry weight in favour of plants with half their leaves removed. None of the traits examined were significantly influenced by watering regime. Interaction between defoliation level and watering regime significantly influenced total fresh weight, dry weight of root and total dry weight. Generally seed size had more influence on seedling characters than watering interval. Seedlings also demonstrated remarkable ability to overcome effects of defoliation.

This paper explores reasons for the apparent ineffectiveness of religious education programmes in the Catholic schools of the West. It examines the impact of the anti-realist educational philosophy of Constructivism and the inadequacy of responses to these challenges, including those proposed by Recontextualisation theologians. The paper examines the work of the nineteenth century Eng-lish Cardinal, John Henry Newman, and recommends possible solutions to the crisis in religious education based on the work of his insights. It also argues the case for certitude as a necessary component of religious education.

Opis:
This paper summarizes the contribution of Montessori approaches to religious education, both by Maria Montessori herself and by the more recent work of Sofia Cavalletti, Gianna Gobbi and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. It is acknowledged that this work has been pursued primarily in an attempt to match religious experiences with developmental sensitive periods. The question remains, however, of how the needs of those who have missed the ideal moment for the various aspects of their religious development can be accommodated. A case is made for seeing the typi-cal stages of human development described by Montessori as a general sequential process for all learning, including religious. Consequently, the sequence of experiences used in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd might be able to serve the wider purpose of indicating an appropriate se-quence for all religious learning.

Opis:
This study aimed to examine the number of latent classes of criminal social identity that exist among male recidivistic prisoners. Latent class analysis was used to identify homogeneous groups of criminal social identity. Multinomial logistic regression was used to interpret the nature of the latent classes, or groups, by estimating the associationsto number of police arrests, recidivism, and violent offending while controlling for current age. The best fitting latent class model was a five-class solution: ‘High criminal social identity’ (17%), ‘High Centrality, Moderate Affect, Low Ties’ (21.7%), ‘Low Centrality, Moderate Affect, High Ties’ (13.3%),‘Low Cognitive, High Affect, Low Ties’ (24.6%), and ‘Low criminal social identity’ (23.4%). Each of the latent classes was predicted by differing external variables. Criminal social identity is best explained by five homogenous classes that display qualitative and quantitative differences.

As more applied science researchers are attempting to use Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) as well as Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs) in their modeling, especially when involving Fractional Brownian Motion (fBM), one common issue appears: an exact solution cannot always be found. For cases involving SPDEs, exact solutions commonly do not exist and approximation schemes for their solution are typically still in development. Therefore, in this paper, we test various Numerical methods in solving SDEs and SPDEs with standard BM that have non-linear coeffi cients. In addition we extend our results to problems with fBM.

Opis:
Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is an essential tree crop with great potential economic value mainly because of its seed oil (shea butter) which is of high demand for manufacturing assorted products in food, cosmetic, and rubber industries. Propagation of this species is, however, hindered by relative unavailability of seed (nuts), erratic seed germination, a long vegetative phase, and latex exudation from cuttings. Thus, another method of propagation through in vitro culture is recommended for rapid multiplication of shea genotypes for large-scale cultivation. In the present study, the effects of two cytokinins, namely, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and kinetin (KIN), and one auxin, namely 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), on shoot and/or root induction in vitro were assessed at various combinations/concentrations. The inclusion of these growth regulators in the culture medium significantly improved (P < 0.05) shoot/root regeneration over the controls. The highest shoot regeneration percentage (100%) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 2 mg * dm^-3 KIN + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA or 1.5 mg * dm^-3 KIN within 7/8 days of inoculation. This medium (2 mg * dm^-3 KIN + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA) showed the highest mean shoot length of 3.24 cm. Compared to KIN, BAP was more effective in inducing vigorous shoot growth. However, rooting was induced only on MS medium modified with 1 mg * dm^-3 BAP + 0.5 mg * dm^-3 NAA. These findings can serve as baseline information for in vitro, commercial scale propagation of shea tree.

Abstract: In this paper we examine translation arising in court cases involving reputational damage. A diachronic and tightly focused cross-jurisdictional selection of examples from case law is used to highlight the range of ways in which translation can be employed, blamed, or relied upon by the parties and by the courts, and we glimpse how translations can be a source of libel, a defence against libel, or a gateway to libellous material, how crucial translation can be in protecting or damaging reputations, and how significantly it can affect a case’s outcome. We apply Engberg’s lens for communication in legal contexts, distinguishing micro, meso and macro occurrences of translation at publisher/business/individual, judicial, and State levels. Recurring translation-related topics either mooted by courts or arising in our analysis are then outlined, including: competing translations; translation techniques; translator identification; online translation; how the acceptance of jurisdiction may be influenced by translation requirements; and how judges approach decision-making when foreign language documents and translation are involved.

Using data from the Counter Trafficking Data Collabourative (CTDC; N = 9,900), we developed breakdowns of labour trafficking victims worldwide, for two countries (the USA and Russia), and by job category (e.g. ‘domestic worker’). These tables refer to the frequency with which each of nine victim types occur, based on their motivation to participate in a trafficking arrangement. For instance, ‘Tricked and Trapped’ comprises a large segment of US labour trafficking victims. Such victims willingly begin jobs, but are subsequently forced to continue. Based on attitude-behaviour and marketing theory, the intervention framework prescribes specific interventions for each victim type. These include ‘information sharing,’ ‘radical and moderate confrontation,’ ‘economic and noneconomic rewards,’ and more. The results of our study indicate that labour trafficking victims can vary substantially by region and job category. For instance, Russia’s highest percentage of labour trafficking victims hold construction jobs as ‘Enlightened Apostates’ (e.g. those tricked by a friend) while most US victims perform ‘unspecified’ work as ‘Trapped and Robbed’ (i.e. minors and coerced adults) victims. Thus, the interventions prescribed for them will vary.

Thus, the interventions prescribed for them will vary. Obejmuje on takie płaszczyzny, jak m.in.: wymianę informacji, konfrontację frontalną lub umiarkowaną, analizę korzyści ekonomicznych i pozaekonomicznych.

Bivalves, oysters, mussels, and clams are important constituents of riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Their shells and soft tissues provide information on the environments in which they live. Since they are filter feeders, they also are factors in improving water quality through removal of particulate matter from the water column. Finally, they are a valuable food source that has substantial economic value. Hence, characterization of shells and soft tissues is useful for improved understanding of these factors. Here, we used X-ray microprobes and computed microtomography facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source to investigate elemental distributions in bivalves taken from locations around New York, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. The results form the initial basis for compilation of a database of relevant parameters that can serve for tracking environmental changes and for assessing toxicity of particular metals. The work was enabled by active collaboration with students from the several regions, community groups, and research scientists. The collaboration was facilitated through use of web conferencing between Brookhaven National Laboratory and the varied locations.
