Opis:
The waters of the Celebes Sea are an area that has quite complex dynamics because it is influenced by several factors, either regionally or globally. This influence certainly has an impact on variations in oceanographic conditions in waters such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and sea currents. Currently, there are many observations of oceanographic data, one of which is by using remote sensing methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the seasonal variations in sea surface temperature and sea surface currents in the Celebes Sea using a remote sensing system in a time series for 5 years (2014-2018). The results of this study indicate data on seasonal variation of SST and sea surface currents have an average maximum SST value for 5 years occurring in the eastern season and the second transitional season (May, June, July) with an average value range of 30.6 °C - 31.1 °C and the average maximum sea current velocity for 5 years occurs in the western monsoon with a value range of 0.72 m/s - 0.77 m/s. The high SST value and sea current velocity are caused by the influence of the season which causes variations in the ongoing rainfall, also presumably due to the opposite direction between the monsoon wind and the direction of the main current flowing in the Celebes Sea.

Opis:
The present research work deals with the quantification of toxic heavy metals in the water samples collected from sea water in Międzyzdroje. While the annual average concentration of Cadmium was calculated as 0.44 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.46 ppm in 2009 of the year. The values obtained were found to be below the permissible limit of 2.0 ppm set for inland surface water. While the annual average concentration of Chromium was calculated as 2.67 ppm in 2008 of the year and 2.64 ppm in 2009 of the year. Which was very much above the permissible limit of 0.1 ppm set for inland surface water. The observed annual average concentration of Copper in the water was 0.08 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which was below the permissible limit of 3.0 ppm set for inland surface water. While the annual average concentration of Mercury was calculated as 0.05 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which was very much above the maximum limit of 0.01 ppm set for inland surface water. The annual average concentration of Nickel in the water samples was observed to be 2.47 ppm in 2008 of the year and 2.70 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is close to the limit of 3.0 ppm set for inland surface water. The annual average concentration of Lead in the water samples was observed to be 0.06 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is above the permissible limit of 0.1 ppm set for inland surface water. The results of the present investigation indicate that the annual average concentration of Zinc in water samples was 3.45 ppm in 2008 of the year and 3.73 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is above the permissible limit of 5.0 ppm set for inland surface water.

Opis:
The Baltic winter navigation depended always very much on the ice conditions in the sea. The sea ice occurs different in form and amount, depending on the sea area and the winter season. As the maritime traffic on the Baltic Sea constitutes a substantial amount in the whole of the Baltic countries transport, Sea Ice Services (SISs) have come into being. They constituted the Baltic Sea Ice Meeting (BSIM) – a body, which assembles the parties, which are interested in warnings against bad ice conditions, and in protection of navigation in ice in the Baltic Sea. An indispensable co-operator to this body was always the company “Baltic Icebreakers”. To-day within the BSIM operate by the SISs of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany, Netherlands, Norway and the Baltic Icebreakers. The main statutory duties of the SISs is the acquisition, processing and dissemination of actual information on sea ice conditions and on obstructions to navigation due to sea ice. This is done by maintaining observing posts along the coast of those countries, in their ports and approaches to them, by gathering information from ships, from ice beakers, if possible – from reconnaissance flights or satellite images. Routine products of SISs are the ice reports, ice bulletins, ice charts, forecasts and warnings and other information broadcast by mass media, e.g. radio, internet, Navtex and on the national and Baltic SISs’ web sites etc.

Opis:
In this work long-term probability of occurrence of maximum sea levels in some points of Polish Baltic Sea coast, was determined. Use was made of multi-year series of measurement data on maximum yearly sea levels, and their probability distributions were determined. To the analysis Gumbel’s distribution and Pearson distribution of 3rd type as well as quantile methods and the highest credibility method, were applied. Kolmogorov test was used to examine conformity of the theoretical distributions with real random variable distribution. As results from the analysis, the highest sea levels of 1000- year return period can be expected in Polish ports of the west part of the coast , i.e. Kolobrzeg (750, 2 cm , i.e. 2,5 m above the average sea level) and Swinoujscie (723,6 cm) . Lower sea levels of the same return period can be expected in Ustka (720,2 cm), Wladyslawowo (709,7 cm) and Gdansk (716, 7 cm), respectively.

Opis:
Salt is obtained in various regions of the world and using differing technologies. The origin of the salt and its production methods influence its composition, properties and application possibilities. In recent years, sea salt has attracted a lot of interest, as it is commonly believed that it is richer in minerals than pure evaporated salt. One of the oldest methods of extracting edible salt in the world is the evaporation of seawater. Salinas are found in coastal zones of seas and oceans around the world. The salt obtained in the salin is transported to its destination by various means of transport, including sea transport. Taking into account the classification of sea cargo, salt is classified as solid mass cargo, and due to the physicochemical properties of salt, the transport of this product by sea requires security. The aim of this study was to present selected quality parameters of sea salt that are important in its transport and storage. Parameters relevant from the point of view of transport, storage, technology and processing, which are important in shaping the quality of sea salts were compared in salts obtained in various European salinas vs. Himalayan salt. These parameters included water activity, degree of granulation and discharge angle and embankment angle. The paper also presents the characteristics of sea salts from microscopic analysis and an assessment of the correct labeling of the product, which is important for the consumer of the packaged product. In land transport, not only sea salt is transported in bulk, but also the product in commercial packaging, most often weighing 1 kg.

This paper presents the results of a Secchi depth data mining study for the North Sea – Baltic Sea region. 40,829 measurements of Secchi depth were compiled from the area as a result of this study. 4.3% of the observations were found in the international data centers [ICES Oceanographic Data Center in Denmark and the World Ocean Data Center A (WDC–A) in the USA], while 95.7% of the data was provided by individuals and ocean research institutions from the surrounding North Sea and Baltic Sea countries. Inquiries made at the World Ocean Data Center B (WDC–B) in Russia suggested that there could be significant additional holdings in that archive but, unfortunately, no data could be made available. The earliest Secchi depth measurement retrieved in this study dates back to 1902 for the Baltic Sea, while the bulk of the measurements were gathered after 1970. The spatial distribution of Secchi depth measurements in the North Sea is very uneven with surprisingly large sampling gaps in the Western North Sea. Quarterly and annual Secchi depth maps with a 0.5◦×0.5◦ spatial resolution are provided for the transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (4◦E–16◦E, 53◦N–60◦N).

The aim of this paper is to find connections between the digital game Sunless Sea (Failbetter Games, 2015) and Joseph Conrad’s novels, particularly the ones touching on the subject of sea voyage. Sunless Sea is an exploration role-playing game which focuses on the topics of sailors’ loneliness, dual nature of the sea, and above all, player’s inevitable failure. These tropes are shown not only in the narrative structure of the game, but also in its mechanics and design choices. I believe that the game is heavily inspired by the notion of maritime life created by Conrad, as indicated by the quote from The Mirror of the Sea opening the game: “The sea has never been friendly to man. At most it has been the accomplice of human restlessness.”

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is a plant belonging to the Elaeagnaceae family. It is widely distributed throughout Asia, and Europe, especially in colder regions. Generally, sea buckthorn species vary in their phytochemical composition, depending on the climate, and soils in which they grow. Sea buckthorn has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, due to its rich chemical composition. The leaves, fruits, and seeds of this plant are a rich source of bioactive compounds, such as vitamins (A, E, K, C, B1, B2), phenolic compounds (e.g gallic acid, catechin, quercetin, kaempferol), fatty acids (e.g linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid, vaccenic acid), amino acids (e.g glycine, isoleucine, cysteine, tyrosine, histidine, arginine), micro-, and macroelements. The presence of a large number of bioactive compounds results in a broad spectrum of biological activity. It has been shown that sea buckthorn has antioxidant, and anti–inflammatory properties, moreover it protects, and regulates cellular metabolism, has cardioprotective properties, and protective effect on skin cells. Research from recent years offers the hope that sea buckthorn preparations will be used in the treatment of, for example, skin burns, atopic dermatitis or abnormal cholesterol levels, but also as a support for the treatment of, for example, cardiovascular diseases.

This paper describes the application of methodology based on the artificial neural network technique to make short-term wave forecasts. The neural network model is used to predict significant wave height at a selected location on the Baltic Sea based on wave and/or wind data at ten points scattered on the sea. High quality hindcast data were used in the process of developing the forecast methodology. The data originated from the WAM4 wave model. The results show that the neural network technique allowed significant wave height to be predicted accurately. The agreement obtained by a comparison with a testing data set was sufficiently good to confirm the effectiveness of this approach.

Short-term measurements of nutrient and DOC concentrations and suspended matter (particles, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, algae and ATP concentrations) carried out in seawater layers of varying thickness (10, 90, 250 μm and the underwater layer – 15 cm depth) in spring form the basis for a discussion of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrient and suspended organic matter concentrations. Quantitative and qualitative differences in the composition of neuston species were recorded in selected sub-layers of the chemically stratified sea surface microlayer. The non-linear regression equation was applied in a mathematical model of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrients and organic matter. Two maxima and two minima were found in the diurnal cycle of nutrient concentrations and organic suspensions in sub-layers of different thickness selected from the sea surface. The first maximum, expressed by the proliferation of phytoneuston, lasted from the very early morning till mid-morning. The second maximum occurred in the afternoon. The chlorophyll a concentration, and ATP and neuston abundance declined markedly around noon, when the biologically-damaging radiation dose increased, compelling the downward migration of organisms. At the same time, the photo-oxidation of dissolved organic matter intensified and the concentrations of inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus rose. A shift (up to 2 h) between the maximum and minimum neuston concentration in these sea surface layers was indicative of phototaxis occurring within the entire surface microlayer and in the underwater layer. After sunset the decline in phytoneuston abundance could be related to zooplankton grazing as well as to respiratory breakdown.

The nodal tide in the Baltic Sea was studied on the basis of the Stockholm tide-gauge readings for 1825–1984; data from the tide gauge at Świnoujście for the same period provided comparative material. The Stockholm readings are highly accurate and are considered representative of sea levels in the whole Baltic; hence, the final computations were performed for the readings from this particular tide gauge for the period 1888–1980. The tidal amplitude obtained from measurements uncorrected for atmospheric pressure or wind field was compared with that forced only by atmospheric effects. The amplitude of the recorded nodal tide was the same as the equilibrium tide amplitude calculated for Stockholm. Calculations for equilibrium tide amplitudes were also performed for the extreme latitudes of the Baltic basin.

The results of investigations confirmed that there were three Littorina Sea transgressions at the Lithuanian Coast: the first manifested approximately in 8500-7800 conventional 14C years BP, the second (maximal) - in 6200-5900 and the third - in 5300-4000 conv. 14C years BP. The Post-Littorina Sea maximum was in about 3600-3400 conv. 14C years BP. The Littorina Sea shoreline displacement curves were carried out. The present-day positions of shorelines of the Littorina Sea as well as other Baltic basins are displaced in different altitudes in separate parts of the Lithuanian Coast due to oscillatory neotectonic movements of Earth crust blocks during Late Glacial and Holocene.

Opis:
Ecteinascidia thurstoni is a colonial sea squirt. It has a seasonal rhythm and a tropical and subtropical distribution; it is usually present during the summer months. It synthesizes a group of molecules called ecteinascidins. One of these is ET-743, a compound that has a most original anti-tumoral activity and is today considered to be one of the most promising substances effective against various solid-type tumors (currently sold under the trade name of Yondelis for the treatment of sarcomas and related tumors; it is undergoing phase II/III clinical trails for other kinds of tumors). Worldwide, Ecteinascidia species represent the only available source of this bioactive compound, which was first discovered in E. turbinata. During the present study, the ecology of E. thurstoni along the Suez Canal and Red Sea was investigated. Its populations were observed to be highly gregarious due in part to their low larval dispersal, which is very localized; larvae therefore tend to settle close to their parent colonies. It is only recorded in shallow waters (0.5–1.5 m) as an epiphyte on the pneumatophores of mangroves by the Red Sea, on the pilings of jetties, and the metal or cement banks of the Suez Canal. The morphometric characteristics (zooid length, zooid weight, colony weight) of the Suez Canal population differ significantly from those of the Red Sea. Studying the distribution of this species and locating its different populations along the Suez Canal and Red Sea could help to characterize their genetics, chemistry and bacterial communities at different isolated locations. Ultimately, this will help to define the sources of ET-743 and hence promote its biosynthesis on a commercial scale.

Opis:
This article presents a wider perspective on possibilities of Motorways of the Sea development in the Adriatic Sea, with a special emphasis on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. A complete overview of Motorways of the Sea development has been presented, and key elements influencing the development of Motorways of the Sea were analysed. It has been ascertained that there exist a lot of bottlenecks in the connection to the transport infrastructure in South East Europe. Superannuated port infrastructure, unsuitable inland connections, and nonexistent IT tools for electronic data exchange between all participators in the logistics chain hinder dynamic development of Motorways of the Sea. All these elements were thoroughly analysed, and a proposal for a macro transport strategy suitable for South East Europe has been exposed. It has been accentuated that there is a future for Motorways of the Sea introduction but all described bottlenecks have to be further analysed and removed in a short period of time, to stimulate private sector for financial investments.

Opis:
In the context of short-tenn sea ice forecasting, the model should capture as many of the synoptic features and as much of their variability. as possible. We are interested in the meso-scale properties and processes, i.e. thickness, consolidation, compactness, smoothness, accumulation of ridges, formation of leads and ice edge, drift and displacement, etc. Modelling and forecasting of synoptic ice formation are of interest to shipping as it affects route planning and the operation of icebreakers. With a view to conventional ice charting, the forecast problem might read: Given today 's ice chart, what will tomorrow 's ice chart look like? The model has to return meso-scale features, while essential smaller-scale mechanisms have to be parameterised. The problem in a meso-scale model is to adequately take into account the governing fine-scale mechanisms. Pack ice is a crushable fragmented aggregate, characterized by point-like contacts and stress trajectories. In compressible loading, even local traction forces, causing brittle failure, may be induced. The localization of stress and strain is a considerable complication! By way of localization, critical phenomena at singular points, affect the entire structure. Meaningful characteristics are integrity, state of damage (flaws, cracks). fragmentation and skeletal structure (fabric of fragments, strength of the structure). Structural properties and their evolution dun·ng the material history could be represented by suitably chosen internal variables. To reflect the state of degradation, fragmentation, consolidation, etc., special concepts are required for the damage mechanics of fracturing pieces and fragmented aggregates. Using such a vehicle, the meso-scale mechanics of sea ice could be accommodated in a continuum mechanics model. More elements have been worked out in plasticity.
