Opis:
This study investigated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer on growth, productivity and quality of onion grown under saline soil conditions. The experiment was conducted in the Experimental Farm of Desert Research Center, Ras Sudr, South Sinai Governorate, Egypt. Egyptian local onion cultivar ‘Giza 20’ was selected. Treatments were: two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation treatments [without inoculation (–AMF) and with mycorrhizal inoculation (+AMF)] and four phosphorus supplied treatments (0, 48, 96 and 144 kg P2O5 ha-1). Mycorrhizal inoculation and phosphorus addition affected the plant growth, bulb yield and quality. Morphological traits of plant (height, leaf number, fresh and dry weight), neck diameter, bulb characters (diameter and weight), total soluble sugars (TSS), protein, P content increased, while proline content decreased due to the inoculation of AMF and phosphorus application. Onion inoculated by AMF combined with 96 or 144 kg P2O5 ha-1 gave the highest productivity under saline conditions.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of using a protein hydrolysate, Hemozym N-K 4.5-6, as a component of salinized soil in the cultivation of flossflower (Ageratum houstonianum Mill., Asteraceae). The experiment was focused on the yield and decorative value of A. houstonianum, grown under different concentrations of NaCl and/or Hemozym. Ageratum houstonianum plants were grown in the soil under different NaCl salinity (EC: 0.28 – as control or 3.25 dS m−1 – salt stress) or/and Hemozym dose (0, 0.07 or 0.14 ml kg−1). The results of the experiment imply that A. houstonianum is sensitive to salinity. The application of Hemozym to both unsalinized and salinized soils caused an increase in the yield of the plant organs (roots, stems, leaves, and inflorescence), the number of leaves, and the chlorophyll content without significant changes in the carotenoids. Moreover, an increase in the number and size of first-order inflorescences (heads) as well as more intensive flower color were observed. Thus, it can be stated that the protein hydrolysate studied can be a beneficial component of both salinized and unsalinized soils in the cultivation of A. houstonianum.
Aplikacja Hemozymu zarówno do podłoża niezasolonego jak i zasolonego powodowała zwyżkę plonów poszczególnych organów (korzeni, łodyg, liści i kwiatostanów), liczby liści i zawartości chlorofilu bez wyraźnych zmian w poziomie karotenoidów.

Opis:
Carrot production of valuable carotenes, carbohydrate and protein are hindered by elevated salinity levels in many parts of the world. To assess this problem, germination and growth of two carrot cultivars (Daucus carota cvs Jordan and Napoli) were studied in vivo and in vitro under different salt stress concentrations (0, 75, and 150 mM NaCl). Seeds were directly or gradually exposed to these salt concentrations. With elevated salinity levels, significant reductions in growth parameters (dry shoot weight, fresh shoot weight, shoot length, root length, and root number) were observed. Also, significant difference in germination percentage was observed at 150 mM NaCl in both cultivars when compared with control treatment (90% germination percentage in Napoli and 71% in Jordan cultivar). Growth rate, tolerant index, and relative water content (RWC) declined as salinity increased. The 150 mM NaCl salinity treatment significantly reduced the shoot chlorophyll and protein content, but increased carbohydrate content. Lesser impairment by the gradual exposure of seedling to salinity provides an opportunity to study the acquirement of salt tolerance.

This research evaluated rice growth and yield as well as Zn accumulation in both soil and grain under saline water irrigation conditions. The experiment consisted of a series of pots containing rice plants and paddy soil, with the application of irrigation treatments of five different salinity levels (1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 5‰ with a drip irrigation system). The results show that the salinity accumulation levels in soil can increase by up to 2.8‰ following the application of 5‰ salinity irrigation water during the development stages. Besides, this study also aimed to evaluate the influences of saline water irrigation on the observed rice yields, plant height, leaf length, and leaf width. In the results, irrigation with 3‰ saline water reduced potential rice yield by 58.6% and the length of rice leaves by one-third. Higher salinity of 4‰ in the irrigation water produced only 24% of average potential productivity, and 5‰ water salinity resulted in no yield. Furthermore, salt stress limited the mobile Zn content in paddy soil, reducing the Zn accumulation in grains by between 36.27% and 83.21%. Thus, the study shows that controlling salinity in irrigation water management is essential for controlling the yield and nutrient Zn content in rice grains.

Charakterystyczne parametry fizykochemiczne podłoża i niejednorodność składowanego materiału stanowią podstawę do przeprowadzenia technicznej i biologicznej rekultywacji badanego obszaru i mają duże znaczenie w projektowaniu jego funkcji przestrzennych.
An important source of anthropogenic environment pollution with salts is the sodium industry. Post-production waste dumping grounds, located near the plants, have a negative impact on the surrounding environment because rain water scours harmful substances from them. The aim of this article is to assess the spatial variability of selected physicochemical parameters of soil on the premises of former Sodium Processing Plant “Solvay” in Kraków. The laboratory research showed that the analyzed material has a strong alkaline reaction (average pH > 10), high electric conductivity (average > 10 mS·cm-1) and medium humidity of 60%. There are also ions of alkaline reaction, easily soluble in rain water, which have the ability to accumulate in the deeper layers of the dumping grounds. The existence of those ions in the ground samples creates very stressful conditions for the growth and development of long-rooted plants, therefore it is important in greenery design to include such species of plants that have a shallow root system and are resistant to high salinity of the soil. The characteristic physicochemical parameters of the ground as well as the heterogeneity of the stored material constitute a basis for technological and biological reclamation of the studied area and have large significance in designing its spatial functions.

Opis:
The objective of the work was to evaluate, by using the micromorphometric method, the effects of reclamation on porosity of two different clay loam soils irrigated with saline-sodic waters. Soil samples of the Ap horizon were put in cylindrical containers and irrigated with 9 types of saline-sodic waters (3 levels of salinity combined with 3 levels of sodicity). After a 4-year period, correction treatments were initiated by addition of calcium sulphate and leaching until electrical conductivity and sodium absorption ratio values of the drainage water matched 3 dS m-1 and 9, respectively. After 2 years of correction treatments, undisturbed soil samples were taken from the surface layer and soil thin sections for porosity measurements. Both soils did not show critical macroporosity values (> 10%, below this threshold a soil is classified as compact). Nevertheless, the soils exhibiteda different behaviour: total porosity of the Pachic Haploxeroll soil was not affected by difference in water salinity and alkalinity; on the contrary, the Udertic Ustochrept soil showed a lower porosity associated with higher salt concentration in the irrigation waters. This may be due to the different iron and aluminium sesquioxides content and, as a consequence, a different effect on soil aggregate stability.

Scarcity of fresh water resources is the major constraint for agricultural development in Iran as in many other regions with arid and semi-arid climate. With the pressure on fresh water resources, the use of un-conventional water resources including brackish, saline and sewage water has received greater attentions in recent years. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of farmers' practices using saline groundwater on wheat yield and soil salinity in a Mediterranean climate of Fars province in southern Iran. The study was carried out in several commercial wheat production regions for two years. Chemical analysis of irrigation waters, volume of applied irrigation water, electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (ECe) and yield were measured in each field. General information on agronomic practices was also collected using a questionnaire. Results demonstrate that waters with salinities higher than what has been classified as “suitable for irrigation” are being used for the production of wheat crop. Analysis of wheat yield response to saline irrigation water showed that for water salinities up to 10.7 mS∙cm–1 (threshold value) variation in yield was relatively minor, above which wheat yield decreased at a greater rate. Root zone salinity profiles showed the effect of winter rainfall in reducing soil salinity. It is concluded that although acceptable yields are obtained with some of the highly brackish waters, over application of these waters would threaten the sustainability of crop production in the region.

The use of sewage sludge in agriculture is known to be environmentally friendly as it is a practical way of recycling municipal waste. A short-term experiment was carried out to study the changes in soil chemical and microbiological properties influenced through the addition of sewage sludge along with saline irrigation under a pearl millet-wheat crop rotation. There were three irrigation (canal water (0.35 dS m-1), 8 and 10 dS m-1 electrical conductivity saline water) and five fertilizer treatments (control-F1, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1)-F2, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1) +50% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF)-F3, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1)+75% RDF-F4 and RDF-F5). The results showed that soil organic carbon, and available nitrogen, and phosphorus were reduced significantly under saline conditions but there was an increase in available potassium with the increasing salinity levels of the irrigation water. A significant reduction in soil microbial biomass carbon and enzyme activities was caused by 8 and 10 dS m-1 as compared to 0.35 dS m-1 at different growth stages of crops. Treatment F4 attained the highest soil microbial activity at each crop growth stage by a significant margin among all of the fertilizer treatments, which is associated with a substantial build-up of organic carbon and available NPK in the soil. Soil microbial activities followed a particular trend: at 35 and 75 days after sowing>harvest>sowing in pearl millet and wheat, respectively. Sewage sludge dumping is a major problem in India, and the present study suggests that by applying sewage sludge, soil biological health is improved; therefore its use in agriculture is recommended to farmers.

Salinity occurring in intensively used agricultural, industrialized, and urbanized areas is one of the main factors in soil degradation. The effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on plant growth under environmental stresses is still not fully understood. Two experiments were conducted on the response of Asiatic lilies to treatment with colloidal AgNPs. In Experiment I, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of treating 'Osasco' lily bulbs with colloidal AgNPs (0, 25, 50, 100, and 150 ppm) on growth, flowering, and bulb yield, as well as the production of bulblets. Compared with the control, the applied colloidal AgNPs at all concentrations caused an acceleration of flowering and an increase in bulb diameter and the fresh weight of the aboveground part of the plants and bulbs. In addition, treatment with colloidal AgNPs at concentrations of 100 and 150 ppm increased bulblets’ number and fresh weight. In Experiment II, the effects of colloidal AgNPs (100 ppm) and NaCl stress (600 mM) on the growth parameters, assimilation pigment content, and chemical composition of 'Bright Pixi' lily leaves were evaluated. As a result of the application of colloidal AgNPs, plants flowered faster and had increased height, petal width, fresh bulb weight, bulb diameter, and several scales in the bulb. Under NaCl stress, plants had reduced fresh weight of the aboveground part and bulb, bulb diameter, number of scales in a bulb, and contents of assimilation pigments, N, K, Ca, Cu, Mn and Zn. Colloidal AgNPs offset the adverse effects of salinity on bulb yield by increasing fresh bulb, bulb diameter, and the number of scales in lily bulbs. In conclusion, using colloidal AgNPs can contribute to developing new methods of bulbous plants production and an effective strategy to protect plants from ever-increasing land salinization.

The study aimed to assess the change of soil properties of land use patterns affecting drought and saline intrusion in the Ben Tre province during 2019–2020. Soil samples were taken, and the data on land use patterns of Rice, bare soil, Shrimp, and Coconut in three horizons were at 0–20 cm, 20–60 cm, and 60–100 cm. The analysis of soil pH, EC, organic matter, and bulk density was conducted to assess the changes in soil properties. The results showed that soil pH, EC, and salinity had to be slightly increased in 2020, but soil organic matter and bulk density were not changed. Therefore, the Ben Tre province’s drought and saline intrusion conditions had a negligible impact in general evaluation. However, it is necessary to perform more other studies to clarify the effects of drought and salinity.
