Opis:
This research developed a mathematical model and optimization of materials for the development of metakaolin self-compacting concrete. This is in a bid to reduce the overall material quantity and cost towards sustainable infrastructural construction. To achieve the aim of this research, Response Surface Analysis (RSM) was used. Kaolinitic clay was De-hydroxylated at 750°C to form metakaolin. This was used as a partial replacement for cement at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% weight of Portland limestone cement. Both strength and rheology properties of the developed metakaolin self-compacting concrete were assessed. To this end, slump flow, L-Box test and V-funnel test were carried out alongside the compressive strength using relevant standard. The result of the research revealed that at 15% addition of metakaolin the slump flow, passing ability and filling ability was unsatisfactory according to EFNARC standard. From the numerical optimization of the compressive strength, the maximum predicted compressive strength of 44.35 N/mm2 was obtained. At a low value of metakaolin addition (5–15%), the compressive strength increased as the age of the concrete increased from 3–150 days. The age with the optimum mechanical strength formation was 110 days with metakaolin addition of 52.73 kg. The result of this research provide a database for Engineers, Researchers and Construction workers on the optimum metakaolin required to achieve satisfactory mechanical strength in metakaolin self-compacting concrete.

Research background: Previous studies have argued that empathy (EMP) is an important factor that enhances individuals’ intention to engage in social business. However, the effect of this factor on social entrepreneurial intention (SEI) is unclear (Ukil et al., 2023). Also, although numerous studies have explored the individual impacts of EMP and social entrepreneurial self-efficacy (SES) on SEI, there is a notable scarcity of research that delves into the combined influence of these two predictor variables on the intention to engage in social business. Purpose of the article: This study proposes that EMP does not only individually affect, but also interacts with other factors to influence the intention to start a social business. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how EMP and SES interact to promote SEI. Methods: Based on a survey dataset of 409 respondents in Vietnam, this study employed polynomial regression with response surface analysis to examine the complementary, balance, and imbalance effects of EMP and SES on SEI. Findings & value added: This study's results suggest complementary effects between EMP and SES on SEI. Specifically, this study finds that when EMP and SES are balanced at higher levels, SEI is higher, and when their imbalance increases in either direction, SEI is lower. In addition, this study finds that the degree of SEI is higher when individuals have high SES with low EMP compared to the other way round. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of the complexity of motivation and how it affects SEIs, revealing the complex interaction between EMP and SES in shaping these intentions within a multidimensional motivational framework.

A mesh-coupled axial blade distributor was tested for fluidization of particles in a swirling fluidized bed. The bed velocity was estimated experimentally using a high-speed imaging device and MATLAB supported particle image velocimetry (PIV). The bed velocity was also predicted statistically with a response surface analysis method. During statistical analysis, the confidence interval of bed velocity remained between 0.49485 and 0.49998. The bed velocity was measured about 0.49741m/s and 0.538m/s through experimental and statistical methods, respectively. The experimental and statistical analysis revealed similar bed weights and superficial velocities with a slight difference of 6.4◦ in blade angles.

Opis:
The role of emotions in moral behaviors is emphasized by many neuroscientists and philosophers. From psychological point of view, solving moral dilemmas is impossible in isolation from cognitive-emotional processes related to the self. This study aimed to test self-related factors explaining discrepancies in the judgement of hostility and sadness experienced by someone else’s victim and the judge’s own victim, suffering from severe and trifling offences. The research was conducted in both experimental and correlational paradigms, with response surface analysis (RSA) as a key method of data analysis. Total number of participants was 171. The following questionnaires were used: The Self-Motive Items (SMI), Self-Esteem Scale (SES), Ten Items Personality Inventory (TIPI-PL) and The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule – Expanded Form. According to the results, self-esteem is a predictor of (in)congruence of the levels of hostility attributed to victims suffering from severe offenses, while the motives of self-enhancement and self-assessment predict particular patterns of (mis)matches in the levels of hostility attributed to victims suffering from trifling offenses. Discussion of the findings deals, inter alia, with the role of self-perspective in effective recognition of other people's emotional states.
Dyskusja wyników dotyczy m.in. znaczenia perspektywy Ja dla skutecznego rozpoznawania stanów emocjonalnych innych ludzi.

Opis:
A methodology was exhibited to create the experimental model for assessing the Ultimate Tensile Strength of AA 5083-O aluminum compound which is broadly utilized as a part of boat building industry by Friction Stir Welding (FSW). FSW process parameters, such as: tool rotational speed, welding speed, and axial force were optimized for better results. FSW was completed considering three-component 3-level Box Behnekn Design. Response surface Methodology (RSM) was implemented to obtain the relationship between the FSW process parameters and ultimate Tensile Strength. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) procedure was utilized to check the aptness of the created model. The FSW process parameters were additionally streamlined utilizing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to augment tensile strength. The joint welded at a rotational speed of 1100 rpm, a welding speed of 75 mm/min and a pivotal energy of 2.5 t displays higher tensile strength compared with different joints in comparison with other joints.

Electrocoagulation (EC) can be defined a method utilized to remove pollutants from wastewater by applying an electric current to sacrificial electrodes. Many experimental variables like NaCl content (0–4 g/l), current density (5–25 mA/cm2), time (30–90 mins), and pH (4–10) that influence the removal efficiency regarding COD were considered. In the presented research, three distinct configurations related to electrodes, i.e. Al-Al, Fe-Al, and Fe-Fe, have been utilized to determine which was the most effective. RSM depending on BBD was utilized for optimizing various operational parameters with regard to HWW by use of EC. Maximum COD removal (97.9%) was reached at Fe-Al electrodes, NaCl (3.2 g/l), current density (24.7 mA/cm2), time (81.7 mins), and pH (7.4). COD removal (91.3%) was achieved at the Al-Al electrodes, NaCl (3.8 g/l), current density(23.5 mA/cm2), time-86.3 min, and Ph (7.7). At the Fe-Fe electrodes, the removal of COD (89.5%) was obtained at NaCl (2.3 g/l), current density (24.6 mA/cm2), pH 8.5, and time (86.9 min). This indicates that EC could remove pollutants from different types of wastewaters under many operating parameters and with arrangements of electrodes.

Opis:
In this investigation, high specific strength precipitation hardenable alloy AA7068-T6 was joined using friction stir welding. Experiments were carried out using the three factor-three level central composite face-centered design of response surface methodology. Regression models were developed to assess the influence of tool rotational speed, welding speed, and axial force on ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the fabricated joints. The validity of the developed models was tested using the analysis of variance (ANOVA), actual and adjusted values of the regression coefficients, and experimental trials. The analysis of the developed models together with microstructural studies of typical cases showed that the tool rotational speed and welding speed have a significant interaction effect on the tensile strength and elongation of the joints. However, the axial force has a relatively low interaction effect with tool rotational speed and welding speed on the strength and elongation of the joints. The process variables were optimized using the desirability function analysis. The optimized values of joint tensile strength and elongation – 516 MPa and 21.57%, respectively were obtained at a tool rotational speed of 1218 rpm, welding speed of 47 mm/ min, and an axial force of 5.3 kN.

The paper presents a probabilistic modelling of displacements of a foundation pile. The pile is subjected to lateral loading implemented in the pile's head. The pile is embedded in a layered linearly-elastic random medium. The loading is considered as a random variable. The probabilistic approach to this problem as a three-dimensional one constitutes a new result in comparison with other earlier published. The base of the solution is the three-dimensional modelling by the finite element method. A series of results can be obtained under various values of elastic characteristics of the medium under consideration. Next by a non-linear regression procedure a response surface is obtained. To get the final response surface an iterative algorithm has been applied. The final response surface allows a reliability analysis. The failure criterion is an exceeding of an allowable displacements threshold by deformed pile's head. By numerical examples a vital effect of the random variability of the lateral force as well as random variability of the elastic modulus of the upper layer has been demonstrated.

This study involves the implementation of an economic order quantity (EOQ) model which is an inventory control method in a ceramic factory. Two different methods were applied for the calculation of EOQs. The first method is to determine EOQ values using a response surface method-based approach (RSM). The second method uses conventional EOQ calculations. To produce a ceramic product, 281 different and additive materials may be used. First, Pareto (ABC) analysis was performed to determine which of the materials have higher priority. Because of this analysis, the value of 21 items among 281 different materials and additives were compared to the ratio of the total product. The ratio was found to be 70.4% so calculations were made for 21 items. Usage value for every single item for the years 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively, were obtained from the company records. Eight different demand forecasting methods were applied to find the amount of the demand in EOQ. As a result of forecasting, the EOQ of the items were calculated by establishing a model. Also, EOQ and RSM calculations for the items were made and both calculation results were compared to each other. Considering the obtained results, it is understood that RSM can be used in EOQ calculations rather than the conventional EOQ model. Also, there are big differences between the EOQ values which were implemented by the company and the values calculated. Because of this work, the RSM-based EOQ approach can be used to decide on the EOQ calculations as a way of improving the system performance.

Sour crude oil is the crude oil that contains a high level of sulfur impurity. It can be toxic and corrosive. Before this lower-quality crude can be processed into other crude oil derivatives, the sulfur content must be reduced, raising the processing cost. A homemade semi-automated multipumping flow analysis system was constructed, consisting of several parts available on the local markets and at low economic costs to decrease the sulfur content of crude oil samples collected. The central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) have been used for modeling and optimization. The effects of the operational parameters, including polar and nonpolar solvent types, solvent flow rates (10–40 ml/min), mixing coil lengths (120–200 min), temperature (30–60 °C), and solvent entry time to the system (0–60 sec) were studied. Experimental and theoretical applications were made to determine the optimal sulfur content, which came out to be 1.438 and 1.395 wt.%, respectively. This system evaluated the effectiveness of the sulfur removal content for actual heavy crude oil by experimentally and theoretically to be 65.73 and 66.75% respectively. The semi-automated system was applied successfully to reduce the sulfur content in a highly sensitive and accurate way.

The nature of environmental interactions, as well as large dimensions and complex structure of marine offshore objects, make designing, building and operation of these objects a great challenge. This is the reason why a vast majority of investment cases of this type include structural analysis, performed using scaled laboratory models and complemented by extended computer simulations. The present paper focuses on FEM modelling of the offshore wind turbine supporting structure. Then problem is studied using the modal analysis, sensitivity analysis, as well as the design of experiment (DOE) and response surface model (RSM) methods. The results of modal analysis based simulations were used for assessing the quality of the FEM model against the data measured during the experimental modal analysis of the scaled laboratory model for different support conditions. The sensitivity analysis, in turn, has provided opportunities for assessing the effect of individual FEM model parameters on the dynamic response of the examined supporting structure. The DOE and RSM methods allowed to determine the effect of model parameter changes on the supporting structure response.

Opis:
Plasma spraying is a process widely used to fabricate wear resistant coatings. However, various problems are associated with plasma spraying out of which poor bonding strength between the coating and the substrate and the high porosity in the as sprayed coatings are of major concern. In order to eliminate these problems and enhance wear performance, the laser remelting process has been used. The laser remelting of plasma sprayed Mo coatings alters the wear mechanism and improves the wear resistance. The wear mechanism and wear volume loss depend on the applied load, sliding speed and sliding distance. Hence, an effort has been made to investigate the effect of process parameters on volume loss using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based mathematical models. The experiments were planned as per Central Composite Design (CCD). The investigations revealed that the applied load was the most dominant factor affecting the volume loss of the coating. The sliding speed, sliding distance and interaction effects were considered as the next important parameters influencing the volume loss. The investigation also reveals that, the wear volume loss depends on two wear mechanisms, one being the formations of grooves along surface tribo films and other being fracture of splats with delamination of the coating.

Opis:
This paper presents an approach of optimization of a truck semitrailer suspension system, with utilization of multibody model; its purpose was to find the best values of operational parameters: stiffness and damping factors, in order to minimize the disadvantageous influence of force distribution in the high risk areas, where preceding strength analysis has pointed out dangerous load values. The model contains elements of two different types: flexible and rigid bodies, in purpose of increasing the accuracy level of conducted numerical calculations. A number of simulations with different parameters and under different load cases have been carried out, combined with a parametric and structural sensitivity analysis, what has enabled an estimation of individual factors influencing particular forces that have been the objectives of optimization procedure. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the construction suspension system have been adjusted by applying metamodeling techniques. Basing on the chosen design of experiment results, this procedure allows for an approximation of the behaviour of the analysed construction in the whole design space. In this process, two different approaches have been used: Kriging and polynomial regression, and both have been compared to the simulations results. Finally, using a desirability function, the most optimal solution has been found.

Opis:
The influences of the pollution layer parameters including; conductivity, position and length on the performance of high-voltage cylindrical insulator were investigated. Parameters effects and their interactions have been assessed and determined using the variance statistical technique and the relation between parameters and the flashover voltage, maximum electric field and the breakdown strength is modeled by the response surface methodology (RMS). The 3D model from Comsol Multiphysics was used for modeling and the FEM method was utilized for simulations. The findings demonstrate that the flashover voltage of the non-uniformly contaminated surface is primarily affected by the pollution layer length. Simulation results show that the intensity of the electric field rises with the increasing in length of pollution layer and its position. It was noted that the experimental tests in laboratory for non-uniform contamination are in strong alignment with simulation studies. The results of this analysis should expand our understanding about the performance of outdoor insulators under specific contaminated conditions. The knowledge gathered can be used to enhance the configuration of insulators used in contaminated regions and it is believed that the current study has resulted methodology to estimate reliably and realistically the pollution performance of cylindrical porcelain insulators.

This work investigates the effect of Reynolds number, nanoparticle volume ratio, nanoparticle size and entrance temperature on the rate of entropy generation in Al2O3 /H2O nanofluid flowing through a pipe in the turbulent regime. The Reynolds average Navier-Stokes and energy equations were solved using the standard k-ε turbulent model and the central composite method was used for the design of experiment. Based on the number of variables and levels, the condition of 30 runs was defined and 30 simulations were run. The result of the regression model obtained showed that all the input variables and some interaction between the variables are statistically significant to the entropy production. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis result shows that the Reynolds number, the nanoparticle volume ratio and the entrance temperature have negative sensitivity while the nanoparticle size has positive sensitivity.

In this paper, investigation of the effect of Reynolds number, nanoparticle volume ratio, nanoparticle diameter and entrance temperature on the convective heat transfer and pressure drop of Al2O3/H2O nanofluid in turbulent flow through a straight pipe was carried out. The study employed a computational fluid dynamic approach using single-phase model and response surface methodology for the design of experiment. The Reynolds average Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation were solved using k-ε turbulent model. The central composite design method was used for the response-surface-methodology. Based on the number of variables and levels, the condition of 30 runs was defined and 30 simulations were performed. New models to evaluate the mean Nusselt number and pressure drop were obtained. Also, the result showed that all the four input variables are statistically significant to the pressure drop while three out of them are significant to the Nusslet number. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis carried out showed that the Reynolds number and volume fraction have a positive sensitivity to both the mean Nusselt number, and pressure drop, while the entrance temperature has negative sensitivities to both.

Opis:
This paper describes the boundary element method (BEM) and the experimental and optimisation studies conducted to understand the potential of expansion chamber coupled micro-perforated cylindrical panel (MPCP) in enhancing the acoustic attenuation for in-duct noise control issues. Owing to the complex structure of the MPCP and to achieve the correct prediction of acoustic attenuation, BEM is adopted on the basis of the Simcenter 3D software to compute the sound transmission loss (TL), As the MPCP is cylindrical in shape with numbers of sub-milimeter holes, additive manufacturing-based 3D printing is utilised for the model prototyping to reduce current design limitation and enable fast fabrication. The TL measurement-based two-load method is adopted for model validation. Subsequently, parametric studies of the MPCP concerning the perforation hole diameter, perforation ratio and depth of air space are carried out to investigate the acoustic performance. Optimisation via response surface method is used as it allows for evaluating the effects of multiple parameters as required in this study. The model validation result shows that the error between the BEM and the measured values is relatively small and shows good agreement. The R-square value is 0.89. The finding from the parametric studies shows that a wider peak attenuation can be achieved by reducing the perforation hole diameter, and one way to increase the TL amplitude is by increasing the air cavity depth. Finally, the optimised MPCP model is adopted to the commercial vacuum cleaner for verification. The sound pressure level of the vacuum cleaner is significantly attenuated within the objective frequency of 1.7 kHz.

Purpose: The main aim of this research is to analyse the effects of the laser cutting parameters on the kerf width of stainless steel (2505), and develop a model of laser cutting that can predict the relation between the characteristics of the resultant kerf width and the process input parameters. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the minimum kerf width; the optimal setting of the effecting parameters like; power supply, cutting speed, and gas pressure for the response surface methodology, and factorial design-based optimal parametric analysis has been carried out for this purpose. A mathematical model for analysis of the kerf width was developed using the (Minitab 16) on the basis of experimental results. Findings: It’s found that the interaction between power value, cutting speed, and pressure has a significant effect on the response value. Also, it’s found that, when the power and cutting speed are set at optimal values i.e. 1250 watt and 5 mm/min, the minimum kerf width will be 0.389 mm. The mathematical model has been established based on regression analysis by factorial design and response surface model. Research limitations/implications: The cutting quality in this process widely depend on the technical specifications of a laser machine. Consequently, machine operation parameters are considered the main limitations factor in this process. Practical implications: In this current work, the 4 mm thickness stainless steel (2505) has been used in the experimental investigation to measure the Influence of laser cutting machine parameters. In addition, optimal laser cutting parameter values that minimize the width of kerf width were identified. The optimization problem was formulated and solved by the second-order model method. The laser cutting experiment was planned and conducted according to the (RSM) central composite design approach (uncode). Originality/value: The validation with experimental results shows that the factorial analysis gives an average error 5%, and the (R-sq) is equal to 69.02%. It’s concluded that the model that has the (R-sq) value greater than 41% is considered as a fit model and can be used for the next machining process.

Opis:
This present investigation uses the Taguchi and response surface methodology (RSM) for modelling and optimization of the temperature produced during bone drilling. The drilling of bone is a common procedure in orthopaedic surgery to produce hole for screw insertion to fixate the fracture devices and implants. A major problem which is encountered during such a procedure is the increase in temperature of the bone due to the plastic deformation of chips and the friction between the bone and the drill. The increase in temperature can result in thermal osteonecrosis which may delay healing or reduce the stability and strength of the fixation. The drilling experiments are conducted on poly-methyl-meth-acrylate (PMMA) (as a substitute for bone) using Taguchi’s L27 experimental design technique. The cutting parameters used are drill diameter, feed rate and cutting speed. The optimum cutting parameters for minimum temperature are determined by using S/N ratios and the effect of individual cutting parameters on temperature produced is evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). A second-order model is established between the drilling parameters and temperature using RSM. The experimental results show that the drill diameter is the most significant drilling parameter affecting the temperature during drilling followed by cutting speed and feed, respectively. The values predicted and the values obtained from experiment are fairly close, which indicates that the developed RSM model can be effectively used to predict the temperature in orthopaedic drilling.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of an analysis of gaseous sensors based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) by means of the equivalent model theory. The applied theory analyzes the response of the SAW sensor in the steady state affected by carbon monoxide (CO) in air. A thin layer of WO3 has been used as a sensor layer. The acoustical replacing impedance of the sensor layer was used, which takes into account the profile of the concentration of gas molecules in the layer. Thanks to implementing the Ingebrigtsen equation, the authors determined analytical expressions for the relative changes of the velocity of the surface acoustic wave in the steady state. The results of the analysis have shown that there is an optimum thickness of the layer of CO sensor at which the acoustoelectric effect (manifested here as a change in the acoustic wave velocity) is at its highest. The theoretical results were verified and confirmed experimentally.

The use of form tools is growing in industry, owing to their inherent advantage of improving productivity. However, the accurate formation of form tool profile is a really tedious task. In this research work, wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) process has been used for the generation of a form tool. Pulse on-time, pulse off-time, servo voltage, wire tension, flushing pressure have been considered as input parameters, whereas tool geometry (clearance angle, included angle), surface roughness and material removal rate are the selected responses. Response surface methodology (RSM) (Box Bhenken experimental design) technique has been used for design of experiments. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) has shown that pulse on-time and pulse off-time are the two influential control factors for material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra), clearance angle and included angle. Contour plot analysis has been performed to find out the optimal ranges of the most influential control factors for each response characteristics.

Opis:
This paper concerns load testing of typical bridge structures performed prior to operation. In-situ tests of a two-span post-tensioned bridge loaded with three vehicles of 38-ton mass each formed the input of this study. On the basis of the results of these measurements an advanced FEM model of the structure was developed for which the sensitivity analysis was performed for chosen uncertainty sources. Three uncorrelated random variables representing material uncertainties, imperfections of positioning and total mass of loading vehicles were indicated. Afterwards, two alternative FE models were created based on a fully parametrised geometry of the bridge, differing by a chosen global parameter – the skew angle of the structure. All three solid models were subjected to probabilistic analyses with the use of second-order Response Surface Method in order to define the features of structural response of the models. It was observed that both the ranges of expected deflections and their corresponding mean values decreased with an increase of the skewness of the bridge models. Meanwhile, the coefficient of variation and relative difference between the mean value and boundary quantiles of the ranges remain insensitive to the changes in the skew angle. Owing to this, a procedure was formulated to simplify the process of load testing design of typical bridges differing by a chosen global parameter. The procedure allows - if certain conditions are fulfilled - to perform probabilistic calculations only once and use the indicated probabilistic parameters in the design of other bridges for which calculations can be performed deterministically.
W związku z tym, w celu opracowania procedury zwiększenia efektywności procesu przygotowywania probabilistycznych projektów próbnych obciążeń obiektów typowych, do dalszych analiz porównawczych i probabilistycznych wygenerowany został znacząco bardziej zaawansowany model bryłowy MES.

Opis:
In the northeast of Algeria, Souk Ahras area is known for the severity and spread of landslides, especially in Mechroha and Zaarouria municipalities. Stability analysis of landslides in these areas depends on the calculations of safety factor according to several parameters (physical, mechanical, geological…). The aim of this study is to investigate the parameters affecting the safety factor using the design of experiments (DOE) method, central composite design (CCD) and response surfaces methodology (RSM). These methods use parameter modeling and optimization to discuss a solution of landslide hazard by developing models of safety factor (Fs) considered as response. The other parameters adopted as input independent factors are geotechnical physical and mechanical parameters such as: the dry and wet unit weight (γd, γh), the water content (w), the plasticity and liquidity limits and the plasticity index (WL, WP, IP), the percentage of fine elements Ff (%) < 0.08 mm), the cohesion C and the internal friction angle (Phi). Obtained results show high correlations with a regression coefficient R2 of 0.88 and 0.93 in the two cases study and the predicted factor of safety model fit best to those obtained in the analytical and numerical modeling procedure. The final model is applicable to give reliable results on the safety factor of landslides.
