Opis:
The author discusses his inspirations and premises behind Polish Composers 1918-2000, which appeared in print in 2005, jointly published by the Warsaw and Gdańsk Academies of Music. It consists of two volumes – Essays and Biographical Entries. The former presents a wide panorama of social, political and cultural phenomena, which influenced the development of Polish music in the 20th century. The second volume consists of around 1300 biographical entries. This paper contains remarks about the contents planned for the English version of the book. Two complementary sources of inspiration determined the book’s coming into being. The first, a belief that the accomplishments of Polish composers of the 20th century are just as outstanding as they are little-known. The second inspiration comes from an observation that the list of the finest musical compositions of the 20th century (289 items), compiled in 1992 by Leo Gerhartz from the European Radio Union, ranks Polish music as no. 12. It is represented by 10 compositions by 4 composers: Witold Lutosławski (5 compositions), Karol Szymanowski (2 compositions), Krzysztof Penderecki (2 compositions), and Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1 composition). At the outset of the research, two seemingly simple but essential questions had to be answered. The first one being who do we call a composer, and the other, who do we consider to be a Polish composer. In the author’s view, a composer is a person who has composed at least one musical composition, a piece which became known as an artistic fact. Here, “become known” means primarily a public performance of a piece. The author’s attention focused on the lives and works of the so-called classical composers. While searching for an answer to the question as to who can be considered a Polish composer, the author analyses statements made by outstanding Polish researchers. He shares their view that ‘Polishness’ should not be determined by nationality or language, but by participation in Polish culture, and an affiliation to it. The last part of the paper concerns the structure and contents of the English version of the book. It will be published jointly by the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. The book will not be a simple and direct translation of the Polish version. The contents of the Essays volume will be different, and the Biographical Entries volume will include, first of all, the following entries: winners of Polish and international composition competitions, composers who have rendered great services to Polish musical culture, priests-composers or other persons, whose creative activities are closely linked to the music of the Catholic Church, and representatives of the younger generation of composers, who have become known after the year 2000. The goal of the planned book is an attempt at proving the thesis that the contribution of Polish composers to the European cultural achievements, their outstanding accomplishments in the area of culture, are of the highest value.

This paper aims to analyse the employment of women in banking during the Second Polish Republic (i.e. interwar Poland). The banking sector was small in terms of employment. The number of people associated with this sector was 18.1 thousand in 1921 and 31.2 thousand in 1931, which accounted for 0.5-0.6% of all professionally active workers outside the agricultural sector. The banking community was dominated by men, the number of women working in banks was about 6.1 thousand in 1921 and 8.5 thousand in 1931 (30% of all human resources). This paper presents the nature of jobs performed by women, their positions and earnings. The presentation takes a number of forms: according to bank types, groups of voivodeships, size of the town and according to headquarters and branches. In all cases, the activities and earnings of women and men were compared.

The paper addresses aspects of the language of the Polish diaspora and of the standard language, as forms of language spoken by Poles living abroad. The standard language is/should be common for all Poles – used everywhere and by everyone in the same way. The Polish diaspora language, on the other hand, appears only in specific territories and is used for communication in specific groups of Poles. It differs depending on the country where they settled and on the language it comes into contact with, as well as on the diversity of the emi-grants, and also depending on the Polish they brought from their home coun-try (either them themselves or their parents). Although the terms “Polonia” [Polish diaspora] and “język polonijny” [Polish diaspora language] are com-monly used, one should be aware that the latter are actually numerous.

The article is devoted to old and new Polish patriotic songs. It contains an analysis of the content of the collected works. The old songs were uplifting in nature and were very important for national culture. They were used to shape identity and build community, and at the same time to communicate important events. They express love for the homeland, proclaim its beauty and the need to fight for the maintenance or recovery of freedom. The new songs were created after 1983 and are already part of popular culture. They are highly individualized and express the emotional personal commitment of the creator. In addition, they move away from religious themes. Modern patriotic songs consist of four currents: traditional, new attitudes, social and historical. Traditional and historical currents are the closest in value to old patriotic songs. The current of new attitudes becomes a place of searching for an individual reference to patriotism. The social trend registers reality and is sometimes used to take a critical look at what is currently happening in Poland.

Political cooperation between Poland and Germany has not been running smoothly lately. It has been a long time since those relations had such bad press. The idea of the Center Against Expulsions, the matter of war reparations or discussions concerning the shape of the European Constitution are the issues which have made our relations colder. However, there is a area of co-operation, the military sphere, where co-operation runs exemplary. In this article I would like to draw attention to a few issues connected with this matter.

The way they operate, both in legal and educational terms, are different. This article is an attempt to categorize them. In addition, this article characterizes the existing schools by dividing them into four categories – school consultation points linked with Polish diplomatic missions, schools associated in the Polish Schools’ Forum in the Netherlands, schools operating at parishes and non-affiliated ones. According to the Dutch Planning Office, there are currently 250,000 Poles in the Netherlands. The representatives of the Polish Consulate in The Hague estimate that there may be up to 40,000 children among people of Polish descent who live in the Netherlands. Only about 2,000 of them attend Polish and Polonia’s schools. This article is the beginning to understand why only 5% of children of Polish origin who live in the Netherlands attend schools that look after Polish language.

In 2008, the Government Plenipotentiary for the Polish Presidency in the EU was appointed and in January 2009 the Polish government passed a comprehensive program of preparations to this historical event. Moreover in 2009 the financial resources for organization were provided, logistic preparations as well as trainings for Polish officials and first promo and information activities were undertaken. On July 1, 2011 Poland will assume the Presidency of the EU Council. It is not only a great challenge requiring strategic planning, full political and organizational activity on domestic and European level but also, what the representatives of the current government emphasize, a big opportunity for Poland in shaping the EU. According to them, the Presidency gives a possibility of a bigger and real influence on decisions taken in the EU. To the public opinion, they send messages that we will have an opportunity to present in the EU arena the priorities of Polish policy, emphasize the most important area, submit our own ideas and initiatives. Only few emphasize the fact that the Presidency is mainly the continuation of previous activities of the EU, providing its coherent functioning and guaranteeing the vote in the worldwide important matters.

In this paper, I wish to present the complexity of Jewish-Polish relations from the 19th century until the interwar period, with emphasis on sociolinguistic issues. I will illustrate the circumstances of the contact between the Polish and Hebrew languages. Poles and Jews, who lived side by side, developed successful relationships, but mainly in the criminal underworld. That was reflected in a sociolect – a dialect of criminals that constituted a mixture of Polish, Yiddish, Russian, and several other languages, including quite a few Hebrew words, which with time adopted new meanings. Moreover, I will provide some examples of Hebrew words used in Polish criminal jargon, as well as those which have been coined in every-day Polish. Then I will refer to some Hebrew words that are not connected with a world of crime and are still in use in spoken Polish.

Opis:
On the basis of an empirical study, this article offers some generalisations concerning service systems characteristic of split towns in East-Central Europe. Three frontier urban complexes were examined, including two in the Polish-German borderland, viz. Słubice (Poland) – Frankfurt on the Oder (Germany) and Gubin (Poland) – Guben (Germany), and one in the Polish-Czech borderland, viz. Cieszyn (Poland) – Český Těšín (Czech Republic). The model approach adopted was intended to ensure an insight into the basic properties of the service system in the form of significant factors and connections holding within it. There are many factors giving shape to a service system, but those primarily responsible for differences between the service systems of the examined frontier urban complexes include: (a) the kinds of services offered, (b) specific forms of retail trade, (c) intensity of transborder traffic, and (d) consumers of services. Their unique combination allowed for distinguishing two service systems: in the Polish-German borderland and in the Polish-Czech one. The research also revealed that each system had a double service practice. One, geared to the service of the local population, is fairly stable, and the other – geared to a transborder customer – is different. In the Polish-Czech borderland it is balanced, equally open to the local customer and one from abroad, while in the Polish-German borderland it displays a marked asymmetry in terms of volume and function.

This working-class pastime was uniquely suited to industrial Milwaukee, which long held the reputation as “America’s bowling capital,” and the Polonia of the city accounted for a dominant share of its bowling public, focused for the most part in alleys within taverns on the Polish “South Side.” The locally-based Polish American Bowling Association attempted to unite Polish American bowling nationwide under its leadership. The bowling culture of Polish Milwaukee came to an end by mid-century, linked with larger social phenomena such as suburbanization and ethnic succession in what had been traditional ethnic urban neighborhoods.

lexeme 'apopleksja' in the history of Polish
Opis:
The lexeme apopleksja in the history of PolishApopleksja ‘apoplexy’ is a word of Latin origin which was used for the first time as a medical term probably in 1534 in a herbarium by Stefan Falimirz. Since then it has been continuously included in dictionaries. Over the period of its presence in Polish, it has been considered to be a medical term, which has been numerously evidenced in medical texts of various epochs and also by the fact that it was referenced in two medical lexicons which are important in the history of the Polish medical terminology: one of 1881, the other of 1905. However, these lexicons show that the term apopleksja had competition. Most probably, the lexeme apopleksja was used for the last time as a strictly medical term before the Second World War. Today it belongs to a group of archaisms in the medical terminology and has been replaced by the following terms: udar (udar mózgu, udar mózgowy) ‘stroke (brain stroke, cerebral stroke).’ Leksem apopleksja w historii polszczyznyApopleksja to wyraz pochodzenia łacińskiego użyty po raz pierwszy prawdopodobnie w 1534 r. w zielniku Stefana Falimirza w funkcji ówczesnego terminu medycznego.

The article presents the phenomenon named by the author melosemy. Melosemy is a sensible additions of the poetic text by the connection of his semantic structures with the melody or with vocal and instrumental techniques. The exemplary material for the presentation of this phenomenon from the borderline of music and text are songs of a contemporary polish poet singing own texts with the accompaniment of a guitar — Jacek Kaczmarski (1957—2004). Melosemy is treated as an important aesthetic catego-ry in the creativeness of the bard. The conclusion of the text opens a wider research area: it is possible to find melosemy both in the creative output of other authors from the range of the poetic song, as well as in soundtracks and folk music.

Opis:
Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

Opis:
The article suggests using the category of the contact zone adopted from postcolonial studies in research on borderland, which - in turn - allows researchers to describe the phenomenon of the frontier. According to Pratt, contact zone may be understood as the space of cooperation and competition, coexistence and antagonism, contact and conflict of groups. The aim of the article is to analyse the representations of borderland in Polish-Jewish prose of the 1930s (including the novels published in the mass-circulation press). We shall focus on the motives that stand behind the conflictive communication. It is worth noting that in the literary renditions, interactions between Poles and Jews easily transform into conflicts. Conflictive communication appears in various places (e.g. school, street, neighbourhood), forms (nicknames, arguments, pogrom cries) and functions (from initiating and escalating tensions to riots and murders). As a result, the contact zone transforms into a conflict zone.

This article focuses on the photographs included in selected record groups in the Archives of the Polish Catholic Mission and discusses them in their historical context. The preserved material presents religious celebrations and patronal feasts of individual associations of the Polish diaspora. The paper also describes the photographs of religious buildings, those documenting support given to Poland when martial law was in force, and those found in the press organs of the Polish Catholic Mission: “Polak we Francji”, “Polska Wierna” and “Glos Katolicki”. The further part contains photographs in loose collections. The oldest ones relate to the events after 1919, when Poles arrived in France for economic reasons. After World War I, France needed workers, particularly in mines, and looked for them in numerous places, including Poland. The article also presents camp photographs, given to the Archives of the Polish Catholic Mission by Barbara Kujawska-Biernat, the daughter of the niece of Prelate Wiktor Miedziński, who worked as a Polish priest in Metz from 1945 to 1958.

The article contains reflections on changes in biographical writing, especially biography of persons of heterogenous ethnic identity. The biographies are not only reconstructions of an individual’s life, but also a clear testimony and reflection of changes in collective consciousness. It turns out that biographies also discover, in a peculiar way, the author’s identity, who, in the process of selection and creation of a biographical text, reveals a part of their own history. This aspect is clearly seen in texts by second and third generation Holocaust survivors, and is demonstrated by interpretations of Magdalena Tulli’s Włoskie szpilki [Italian High Heels] and Piotr Paziński’s Pensjonat [Boarding house].

The article presents the issue of the difference between standard and common Polish in glottodidactics. The analysis of a few randomly selected Polish as a foreign language textbooks shows various approaches to the problem. Therefore, the author concludes that there is a need to examine the role of both language varieties in teaching Polish as a foreign language.

In cooperation with different Polish organizations, Polish media in the region (mainly radio and television) activate and integrate the Polish diaspora, as well as provide information about the everyday life of Poles in Latgale. What is more, such media play an important role in popularizing the Polish language and culture.

Opis:
Aim. This paper analyses the inherent paradoxes of Jewish-Polish relations. It portrays the main beliefs that construct the contradicting narratives of the Holocaust, trying to weigh which of them is closer to the historic truth. It seeks for an answer to the question whether the Polish people were brothers-in-fate, victimized like the Jews by the Nazis, or if they were rather a hostile ethnic group. Concept. First, the notion of Poland as a haven for Jews throughout history is conveyed. This historical review shows that the Polish people as a nation have always been most tolerant towards the Jews and that anti-Semitism has existed only on the margins of society. Next, the opposite account is brought, relying on literature that shows that one thousand years of Jewish residence in Poland were also a thousand years of constant friction, with continuous hatred towards the Jews. Consequently, different accounts of World War II are presented – one shows how the Polish people were the victims, and the others deal with Poles as by-standers and as perpetrators. Results and conclusion. Inconsistency remains the strongest consistency of the relations between Jews and Poles. With the unresolved puzzle of whether the Polish people were victims, bystanders or perpetrators, this paper concludes with some comments on Israeli domestic political and educational attitudes towards Poland, that eventually influence collective concepts. Cognitive value. The fact that the issue of the Israeli-Polish relationship has not been deeply inquired, seems to attest to the reluctance of both sides to deal with what seems to form an open wound. At the same time, the revival of Jewish culture in Poland shows that, today more than ever, the Polish people are reaching out to Israelis, and are willing to deal with history at an unprecedented level. As Israelis who wish to promote universal values, a significant encounter with the Polish people may constitute a door to acceptance and understanding of others. Such acceptance can only stem from mutual discourse and physical proximity between the two peoples.

Even though distance learning intensified the tools, unfortunately, school practice shows that it is used as an analogue of analog instruments. The student is still not the creator, but only recreates the content learned in the lesson. There is not enough space in the classroom – stationary and remote office – to recover digital tools. The introduction of this type of activity is not easy – it is introduced with the need to fully use the area of application, methods, it also gives student and teachers development. The paper deals with one of the methods that enable creative and creative thinking – a project and how to implement it in Polish lessons. In the first part, the author presented a theoretical approach (research to date, strength) along with a methodical commentary and the purposefulness of using the method of working in the lessons. The details of the experience of the project and the benefits of its implementation were detailed. The author, as a working practitioner, shows in her observations on the specifics of the subject, corrections, possible modifications and supplements to existing studies. The second part is practical – it shows how to effectively implement a project at school, as well as examples of student work with an overview. The emphasis is on the appropriate sparring tools and what to consider in the planning plan. It shows where to look for inspiration and good practices, which can be expected for young teachers. The paper is not a compendium of knowledge about Polish studies projects. The most important issues, questions, questions that arise in connection with remote education and presents examples of – often proven – solutions. Non-standard observations are the added value of the text, look at the theory from the point of view of the everyday teacher at school.

Do takiego wniosku prowadzi analiza wybranych siatek wywiadowczych i narodowości agentów. Nie dotyczyło to wyłącznie „agenturalnej drobnicy”, owych tysięcy osób zbierających drobne wiadomości. Również najważniejsi agenci – choć rzadziej – byli z pochodzenia Polakami.
Millions of Poles living outside of their native lands, that is members of Polish diaspora, were recognized by the Polish authorities as a reservoir of strong support for the homeland. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted activities aimed at turning them into a useful tool in the hands of the government. Polish diaspora, mainly understood as Poles permanently living abroad, formed the basis for Polish intelligence activities in the interwar period. An analysis of selected intelligence networks and agents’ nationalities may lead to such a conclusion. This phenomenon applied not only to “small fries” in the intelligence cycle, that is thousands of people gathering meaningless information, but also to the most prominent agents, who – although less often – were of Polish origin.

When teaching Polish vocabulary using information and communication technologies, it is far more difficult to meet the criteria of effectiveness and functionality. The authors of the article claim that open, multistage tasks, that require active processing of information and lead to a certain useful ‘final’ product can serve this purpose well.

The factors which impact the educational well-being of Polish pupils are analysed, with the special emphasis put on the EAL management strategies and solutions. As there is no national data on educational achievements of Polish children, the results of EAL children as well as pupils from the Other White category are briefly presented and compared to the results of the White British and native English speakers’ groups. Finally, the role and the expectations of Polish parents are discussed.

Opis:
The article attempts to describe the early, pre-opera reception of music written by Władysław Żeleński (1837–1921), one of the most important Polish composers and music educators working in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The lower limit of the study period is the first mention of the composer in the press, namely the review of the Piano Sonata Op. 5 by Józef Sikorski (1859). This period ends in the year 1785, just before the premiere of Żeleński’s the first opera, Konrad Wallenrod. The source material was all Polish periodicals of that time, comprised of musical specialized magazines, art magazines, general public magazines and journals (including Cracow’s “Czas”). The aim of the author of this paper was to present the main problems (and their evolution) which occur in Polish critical-thinking about music in the context of Żeleński’s orches-tral works, as well as songs, piano and chamber music. Among these issues, the most important seem to be the reviewers’ attempt (initially tentative) to classify Żeleński by one of the current trends — insert him in the rigid framework of interpretation. The following oppositional categories can be mentioned: technicism and lyricism, talent and genius, youthfulness and maturity, classical and salon music, “national” style and a cosmopolitan one. One of the main issues for critics was to determine the influences in Żeleński’s works, and thus find out the artistic way which he fol-lowed. And here are the most common patterns mentioned by the reviewers: the classic style, the “national” one (in this case his songs were very often evaluated as linked with Stanisław Moniszko’ works) and the New German School. In the critical-thinking of music Żeleński somehow balances between these concepts. The aim of the author of this paper was to highlight the most important arguments that appear in discussions and — additionally — to supplement historiographic base associated with the composer.

The present paper is the second of two papers investigating polyglot dictionaries which comprised Polish and English wordlists. It rests on the assumption that, by providing the earliest documentation material for Polish and English respectively, the polyglots can be regarded as historical antecedents of bilingual dictionaries. While the first paper focused on three Renaissance works of reference, including Calepino’s eleven-language edition, this one concentrates on two relatively little known endeavours of the Enlightenment: Christoph Warmer’s Gazophylacium decem linguarum Europaearum … (1691) and Peter Simon Pallas’ Linguarum totius orbis vocabularia comparativa … (1787–1789). The bilingual material they embrace has been analysed and illustrated with examples in order to shed new light on the two polyglots, which are additionally traced back to their sources.

This paper aims to provide a survey of the early polyglot dictionaries which paired Polish with English, based on the premise that the polyglots can be considered as predecessors of bilingual dictionaries proper. Following this rationale, the authoress examines chronologically the first three of the multilingual endeavours: Ambrogio Calepino’s Dictionarium undecim linguarum … (1590), Hieronymus Megiser’s Thesaurus polyglottus: vel, dictionarium multilingue … (1603), and Georg Henisch’s Teütsche Sprach und Weissheit. Thesaurus linguae and sapientiae Germanicae … (1616). The focus is primarily on the linguistic material of the polyglots, but the assumed aims and readership are also tackled briefly. As bilingual wordbooks have traditionally catered to the needs of users of one or both of the respective languages, the polyglot dictionaries are additionally looked at from the perspective of Polish-English language contact in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

The article aims at presenting the opinion that, in the Polish language, apart from the grammatical category of gender, there is also the grammatical category of sex. The two categories are usually related, sometimes, however, they formulate an opposition. The category of gender is a category of noun and adjective, while the category of sex refers to personal pronouns, mostly to the first person singular, less frequently to the second person singular and even less often to the third person singular. Exponents of gender are mirrored in the paradigmatic forms of nouns and adjectives, whereas the exponents of sex reveal themselves in verbs and predicates, being examples of misplaced morphemes.

Opis:
The article presents the image of Polish Americans in the Polish press after 1989. It is a continuation of the Author’s previous research pertaining to the Polish press under the communist regime, published in the Polish American Studies. The text is based on an analysis of several hundred articles from: the Polish press addressed to general public, mostly weeklies indexed in Bibliografia Zawartości Czasopism by the National Library in Warsaw; two main Polish dailies, Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita – their full-text archival databases; and from selected weeklies that index and publish their archival issues. The article is organized in three main sections: Polonia and Poland (or Polonia for Poland), Polonia in the USA, and Poland for Polonia. Polonia for Poland occupies the largest part of the text, proportionally to the attention paid by the journalists who presented Polish American aid for Poland, especially charitable activities, sponsoring of Polish monuments and events, athletes and other people. Polonian businesses with Poland are also described. Polish American political actions for Poland are dominated by the NATO enlargement campaign, but other problems, e.g. visa waiver projects, are also mentioned. Polonia in the USA reflects on the discussions on the old issue of the position of the Polish American ethnic group in the mainstream American society and its political actions, some internal conflicts within Polonia, especially those related to Edward Moskal, and some Polish American activities in the USA (or the lack thereof), including anti-defamation. Poland for Polonia presents controversies on the Polonian-Polish relations, dating back to the pre-WWII period. One of the aims of the article was to compare the image of Polish Americans presented after 1989 with the one influenced by the propaganda of ‘People’s Poland’. It turns out that some paradigms outlived the collapse of the communist regime, e.g. the myth of a rich uncle from America, the stereotype of uneducated Polish American masses, and the image of a hard and primitive life of new immigrants. Others have been revised, however: Polish American efforts for Poland are more often appreciated than criticized, Americanization of the Polish ethnic group is not lamented and opportunities of life in the USA seem to dominate difficulties. After large interest of the Polish press in the American Polonia presented at the beginning of the 1990s, one can observe its decline, especially after the end of the NATO-enlargement campaign.

The intermodal transport system is used in Poland since many years, and much experience was gained both with respect to organisation and to techniques of transportation. Though in the last years development of this system of transport faces numerous obstacles, and is limited by many factors, it nevertheless shows a general positive trend.

Who, what, when, where, and why is Polish Jewry? Envisioning, constructing, and possessing Polish JewryThis article examines the different ways that various communities of scholars imagine, research and teach about “Polish Jewry.” Focusing on scholarship written in Israel, Poland and the United States over the past generation or two, the article argues that each particular community of scholars constructs a particular version of Polish Jewry and that each of these versions is deeply influenced by contemporary social, political and communal needs and demands. As a result, scholars very often end up constructing radically different versions of Polish Jewish history and society. These scholarly differences reflect many of the challenges and difficulties related to researching and writing about the history and culture of Polish Jews since 1989. Kim, czym, kiedy, gdzie i dlaczego są polscy Żydzi? Wyobrażanie, konstruowanie i zawłaszczanie Żydów polskichArtykuł stanowi omówienie odmiennych sposobów, jakimi różne społeczności badaczy wyobrażają grupę polskich Żydów, badają ją i nauczają o niej.

The Polish Episcopate critically assessed the social and economic situation in Poland in the period of the transition from communism to democracy and a freemarket economy. Privatisation led to production being stopped and to an increase in unemployment. Profit and not human dignity became the measure of labour. The economic and social reality was dominated by the treatment of economics and financial success as of the highest values and the dissemination of the opinion that in politics and economics there are no values. The political elites showed an inability to develop long-term strategies for getting out of the crisis. The disappearance of the morality of many representatives of public life, which was manifested in universal corruption and the aspiration to improve social status as soon as possible, contributed to this state of affairs. As a result, there was a crisis of the idea of the common wealth and an increase in crime. The social crisis was particularly visible in moral attitudes, social behaviour, and in the economic sphere, public finance, on the labour market, and in the quickly progressing social stratification.

Based in London from 1940, Tymon Terlecki (1905–2000) is seen as the architect or codifier of the Polish émigré ethos, and his writings were duly banned in communist Poland. „Emigracja” for Terlecki was essentially an act of faith, rebellious and aspiring to a dizerent reality. Its duty was to engage in the struggle for Poland’s political and cultural independence, and a literature unshackled by Marxist ideology. He also stressed the need to work together with the oppressed nations of central and East Europe, to ensure the integration of central-east Europe with Europe and its Christian heritage. Terlecki had formulated the main points of his political „brief ” before the rst issue of „Kultura” appeared in Rome in 1947. Highlighting the relevance of Adam Mickiewicz’s political journalism to the post-1945 situation, Terlecki was critical of émigré government-in-exile, and what he perceived as their delusional notions, lack of political acumen, and failure to invest in culture. Not wishing to be a passive observer, he joined the new émigré Polish Freedom Movement „Niepodległość i Demokracja” („Independence and Democracy”). Neither doctrinaire nor dogmatic, capitalist nor Marxist, their „Karta Wolnego Polaka” or „Little Grey Book”, sets out basic principles for a democratic post-war Poland. Following the Thaw, Terlecki distanced himself from émigré politics, which he felt had degenerated into ambition-driven politicizing. Collected and published posthumously as Emigracja naszego czasu (Lublin, 2003), his political essays amount to some 40 in all, a small fraction of his literary output.

This is the corrected version of the retracted article under the same title, which was published with the following DOI: https://doi.org/10.11649/slh.1401“You need to speak Polish”: Antony Polonsky in an interview by Konrad MatyjaszekThe interview with Antony Polonsky focuses on the history of Polish-Jewish studies as a research field, analyzed from the time of its initiation on the turn of the 1980s until year 2014. Antony Polonsky is the chief historian of the core exhibition of the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews, as well as the editor-in-chief of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry, a yearly research journal. He is also a co-founder of the first research institutions focused of the field of Polish-Jewish studies, and a co-initiator of the first academic events in this field. In the conversation Polonsky discusses the context of the creation of the Polin Museum’s core exhibition, including the impact of politics on this exhibition’s final form. Afterwards, he recounts the history of the beginnings of Polish-Jewish studies, including the Orchard Lake meeting (1979) and the conference at Columbia University (1983). Polonsky gives a detailed account of the course and the outcomes of the Polish-Jewish studies conference in Oxford in 1984, which he co-organized. He also analyses the 1980s Polish political opposition circles’ reactions to the presence of antisemitic narratives in the opposition’s discourse. The last section of the conversation focuses on the presence within the field of Polish-Jewish studies of narratives that are apologetic towards the Polish nationalist discourse.
30 lat temu w piśmie – wtedy jeszcze będącym biuletynem Szkoły Języka i Kultury Polskiej Uniwersytetu Śląskiego – ukazał się pierwszy artykuł zagranicznej polonistki z Republiki Czeskiej, Haliny Klimszy.
The Prescriptum entitled Polonistyka nie tyko po polsku [Polish Studies not only in Polish] explains the origin of the multilingual issue of “Postscriptum Polonistyczne” that crowns the 30th anniversary of the periodical as an international publication. It was thirty years ago, in fact, that the journal, back then still a newsletter of the School of Polish Language and Culture at the University of Silesia, featured the first article by a foreign Polish studies scholar, Halina Klimsza from the Czech Republic. This text provides a very brief historical account of how the periodical became internationalised, describing the stages of its development that led to the transformation from a newsletter to a “journal of Polish and foreign Polish studies scholars”, and reporting on the editors’ most recent decisions to accept papers for publication also in the English language. The Prescriptum explains the motivation for creating this issue as a collection of Polish studies texts in the native/first languages of the foreign Polish studies scholars who wrote them. We wanted and still want to make sure that knowledge about interesting phenomena and research from Poland and in the field of Polish studies can reach all those who are curious about the world and who would otherwise not be able to obtain such information in their respective countries due to the language barrier. Moreover, we keep in mind young members of the Polish diaspora, who do not always understand the language of their ancestors.

Among various books accompanying Polish emigrants, the prayer-book has been the most popular and best appreciated one in every-day life. For centuries it has wandered with the emigrants in Germany, and from 19th century on also in other European countries as well as in other continents. It was brought there by the emigrants, or was imported by various means from Poland, and later it was also printed abroad in Polish or foreign publishing houses. The prayer-books distributed among Polish emigrants can be classified as ones printed in Poland and abroad (edition), ordinary and special (purpose), original and reprinted, or translations. They all differ from one another in the way they were edited, in their form and contents. They were usually bought by men in the street, both emigrants and their descendants, belonging to different categories with regard to age, profession and living conditions. Polish prayer-books abroad had an important religious, moral and national function. Depending on the situation and need they became defenders of faith, moral leaders and educators) or even teachers of the mother tongue and history. They played a special role where there were no Polish priests.

MIGRATION
Opis:
Integration of the European Union has modified the traditional understanding of the notion of “migration”. As Adrian Favell puts it, currently - after the EU enlargement - migration from the Eastern European to the Western European states takes 2 forms: one is traditional immigration into European nation-states; the other one is “elite migration” of the EU citizens whose career strategies are cosmopolitan and post-national. Educational migration may be described as the second form; students are moving temporarily and they are open to decisions to further migrate. It is interesting to examine the links between these two types of migration; I will do this on the example of the Polish society in the UK, where both the labour migration and the educational migration has significantly increased after the Poland’s accession to the EU. My study is based on in-depth interviews, followed by a short questionnaire. The query took place in London in the academic year 2009/10 and included students and graduates of the four London universities: Westminster, Metropolitan, City University and colleges of University of London. In addition, I pay attention to government reports and statistic surveys.

Opis:
Following the German occupation of the French capital city, an idea sprang up in the Polish intellectual circles to intensify propagation of Polish culture and knowledge of Poland among young Polish and French people. This concept was to be implemented in the Polish Library in Paris by a series of lectures organized by the Department of Science of the Polish YMCA1 in France in late 1944. The success of the lectures encouraged the Polish Library to launch the Polish College with the goal of making available to primarily Polish youth, studying and working in Paris, the achievements of Polish science and culture and to prepare the young people for work in Poland. The curriculum was developed and, as expected, the College’s operations were financed by the YMCA. Wacław Grzybowski, Ph.D., a former ambassador of Poland to the USSR, was appointed director of the College. The lecturers included illustrious intellectuals: priest Augustyn Jakubisiak, Ph.D., Franciszek Pułaski, Zygmunt Dygat, Irena Gałęzowska, Wieńczysław d’Ercville and many other. The College enjoyed considerable popularity among the students. The changing political situation in Poland put a stop to the promising operations of the College. To some extent, it was continued in the Catholic University of Paris ( the Institut Catholique de Paris). Since 1945, the University hosted the Centre for Slavic Studies where the Polish Section (Section Polonaise) was established. It is worth emphasising that an ambitious attempt at establishing studies for young Poles abroad was made in Madrid, on the initiative of the Polish ambassador, count Józef Potocki, representing in Spain the Polish government in London.

Polish-speaking Roman-Catholic pastoral care outside Poland is in most cases based on its own specific structures. Their foundations were laid by the episcopate of interwar Poland. Nowadays in Polish-speaking pastoral centers often three generations gather on the Sunday Mass. This situation puts the chaplain in specific language challenges, including the use of local language in contacts with children and the youth. The way of communicating the truths of faith, liturgical singing and the preservation of customs must also be adapted to such a diverse audience.

Artykuł oparty jest o wywiady, przeprowadzone w 2014 r. w Chicago z trzema Amerykankami polskiego pochodzenia: Christine Long, Marią Cieślą i Lucyną Migałą. M. Cieśla aktywnie działała w Legionie Młodych Polek w Chicago, a następnie została prezeską Muzeum Polskiego w Ameryce.
The article is based on the interviews conducted in 2014 in Chicago with three Polish American women: Christine Long, Maria Cieśla and Lucyna Migała. Each of them was raised in a family of the Polish immigrants after the Second World War. Each of them succeeded in her professional career though the word success may have a different meaning in each case. Long organized election campaigns for the Democratic candidates in Chicago and helped organizing the 1989 campaign of the Citizens’ Committee (Komitet Obywatelski) in Poland. Then she worked for Tadeusz Mazowiecki during his presidential campaign of 1991. Cieśla was active in the Legion of Young Polish Women in Chicago and later became a president of the Polish Museum of America. Migała has founded The Lira Ensemble, a professional Polish American signing ensemble. In their oral histories they presented their childhoods, their striving for identity: Polish or American, or Polish-American, and their relations with parents, siblings, schoolmates, with the Polish American activists, including the “steadfast” of the World War II and post-war immigration, and eventually with their own children (observing the process of Americanization). They comment on the Polish American life in Chicago, on the relations within the Polish group and with the country of their ancestors, often from their personal perspective, and reflect on the reasons of various problems they had to face in their private lives and professional careers. The article confronts their stories with some larger issues of the post-World War II Polish American history and discusses the idea of the Polish American success.

The paper gives an overview of the history and present-day status of Polish studies at St Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia and discusses several key aspects of Polish cultural presence in contemporary Bulgaria. It explains the specific structure of Polish philology studies at the University in the light of the country’s modern educational system and highlights the most prominent scholars that have shaped the prestige of this particular branch of Slavistics. Apart from academic research and educational achievements, another factor playing a significant role in present-day Polish-Bulgarian cultural dialogue is the Polish Institute in Sofia. The paper demonstrates how positive attitudes towards Poland and its cultural heritage have substantially influenced the reception of prominent Poles in Bulgaria. The cases of Lech Wałęsa, pope John Paul II and Czesław Miłosz reveal a tendency to idealize their legacy due to the need of public values lacking in Bulgarian society.

This article presents research on the development of freight rates in Polish road transport in the next few years. This is very relevant for competition with German companies, as Polish road carriers possess almost 90% of the "Poland-Germany" and "Germany-Poland" transport market. Discussed are the reasons for and level of cost advantage, as well as factors influencing costs in road freight transport (e.g. wages, depreciation, maintenance, taxes, elimination of border controls with Germany, EU regulations and standards, technology, cabtage, human capital). It is concluded that it can be expected that, leaving highly volatile fuel prices out of consideration, during the next couple of years Polish road carriers are likely to keep their cost advantage compared to their German competitors.

The article focuses on the social integration of Polish adolescents residing in Athens and attempts to detect factors which influence this process. Data was gathered from two qualitative research projects - case studies - on social and school integration of young Polish citizens attending Polish and Greek high schools in Athens (2010), and on a Polish migrant family and its educational and migration strategies (2012). A qualitative perspective, utilizing semi-structured, in-depth interviews, was chosen in both studies. The paper begins with a short description of the migratory experiences of Greece and Poland, including a brief history of Polish immigration in Greece. It continues with a discussion about social integration and refers to the specific case of integration of migrant adolescents. Then it proceeds to the results of the two studies mentioned above, which indicate that the degree of social integration of Polish adolescents is variable and depends on the school that the young people attend, the extra-curricular activities they participate in, their Greek language competency, their social networks within the Greek population, and their parents’ socio-economic status. Important differences in the social integration between the groups of pupils from Greek and Polish high schools were observed.

Opis:
In the area of the Polish Basin five deep seismic sounding profiles, recorded during 1991–1997, were used to compare the structure of the crystalline and consolidated crusts with that of the sedimentary cover. Repeated reactivation of deep crustal fractures controlled the thickness distribution and development of faults in Palaeozoic andMesozoic sequences.NW–SE toWNW–ESE basin-parallel and transverse N–S to NE–SW striking fracture systems are evident. The former includes the isseyre–Tornquist Zone that marks the profound crustal boundary between the East European Craton and the typical Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ) crust that is characterized by a variably thick consolidated upper crustal layer, composed of Caledonian-deformed Early Palaeozoic and possibly Vendian sediments, and defines the NE boundary of the Permian and Mesozoic Mid-Polish Trough (MPT). Its northwestern TTZ segment was intermittently active throughout the whole geological history of the area. The SWboundary of the TESZ, marked by the Dolsk Fault across which the consolidated crustal layer is replaced by a crystalline Variscan upper crust, is only evident on profiles LT-7 and P4. The deformation front of the Variscan Externides is located some 100 km to the NE of the Dolsk Fault within the confines of the TESZ crust. On profiles TTZ-PL and P2, significant lateral changes in the thickness of the consolidated and crystalline crust of the Pomeranian, Kuiavian and Holy Cross Mts. segments of the MPT are noted that coincide with the transverse Bydgoszcz-Poznań-Toruń and Grójec fault zones. These crustal changes are associated with substantial changes in the composition and thickness of supracrustal sedimentary sequences and the degree of inversion of the MPT.

The paper presents experience from three Polish port cities, included into the Waterfront Urban Development project, which is realised within the framework of the INTERREG II C programme. Basing on the examples of Gdynia, Gdansk and Elblqg it may be stated that that the project resulted in increased awareness and interest of authorities, planning services and inhabitants in the transformation of the dilapidated land/water contact areas. Further realisation of the project gives a chance to upgrade and enliven the waterfront spatial structures using good examples from West Europe.

The article contains information from several Polish surveys oriented to self-perception of Poles, as well as data gathered for the purpose of individual research for a diploma thesis at the Palacký University in Olomouc. The introduction points out the highly critical self-image of Poles, stresses the most distinct features of the Polish society, and presents a list of the mentioned features. The Polish homogeneity and nationalism, emphasized in the study, are presented in a wider context of international relations; the discourse of the Czech-Polish relations has also been discussed in more detail. The surveyed respondents, beside inhabitants of Warsaw, included Miroslav Karas, Mariusz Surosz, Dr. Marcin Stawski or Marta Chwalińska-Stach. The participants spoke, among others, about the specifi c nature of Czechness and Polishness. The text attempts to approximate the character of this binary system and the way the self-references of the Poles are hypothetically refl ected in the current socio-cultural order.

Poles settled in present-day Romania in the fourteenth century. A subsequent influx of Polish settlers followed the fall of the Kościuszko Uprising. The aim of this study is to present the history of education in the Polish minority in Romania. The work focuses on showing various forms of educational and upbringing institutions from the early 19th century to 1939. In the analyzed period, the Poles organized mainly kindergartens and comprehensive primary and secondary schools in Bukowina (now northern Romania). They also made attempts at introducing the Polish language to teachers’ training institutions i.e. teachers’ training colleges for men and women. They established their own socio-educational societies and built Polish Houses in which they pursued a wide range of educational and cultural activities. In the Kingdom of Romania, Polish children could also attend (under certain conditions) Polish language classes in Romanian state schools. Owing to the Polish Schools in Romania, followed by the Polish School Association in Romania, Polish private education assumed various forms.

The paper discusses the issues of family and parenthood in the education pedagogies of Polish scouting organisations in the years 1911–1939 and 1939–1945. It analyses source materials of Polish scouting organisations, the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association ZHP (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego), the Polish Girl Scouts Organisation/Clover Association/Be Ready (Organizacja Harcerek/Związku Koniczyn/Bądź Gotów), the Grey Ranks (Szare Szeregi), the Polish Scouting Regiments (Hufce Polskie). In those years, there were different dominating pedagogies of educating Polish boy scouts and girl scouts. The pedagogies addressed to Polish girl scouts, focused on indoctrinating girls into the roles of mothers raising future generations and complementing the man. In the latter period, the bravery of women was included in those pedagogies, as well as their vocational training, but only in professions that were socially useful. Pedagogies addressed to Polish boy scouts were more stable. The following two types were alternately dominant: the soldier and the citizen, whereas the theme of family and parenthood is mentioned directly only in the period 1939–1945, in the Polish Scouting Regiments organisation.

Opis:
The issue of Polish-Jewish relations in the Wieluń district in the Second Polish Republic has not been explored by many researchers. Due to the complexity of the problem, it is difficult to define these relations unequivocally. They were shaped by the socio-economic situation of the day, and were related to trade, social and religious events, and politics. Regardless of the examples of both friendly coexistence and incidental criminal events, in the discussed period, the interwined history of the Polish and Jewish populations influenced the dynamic social development of these territories in the Polish independent state. The Jews, who were organized into seven religious communities, disappeared from the region as a result of the Second World War.

It is not without reason that we reflect more and more on the causes of the current state of political thinking in Polish society. Indeed, in modern times, difficult and uncertain, and turbulent times of great transformation, human thought is clearly not keeping pace. Given the rapidly changing external circumstances we have become increasingly confused and inept. We do not really know how to deal with the emerging threats and challenges of modern times, described by the eminent sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman as the era of “liquid modernity”. It is noticeable that our perception and image of social reality and our role in it, including its political dimension, is quite imperfect and restricted, and that our ideological life is in deep crisis or has perhaps even disappeared.

This article concerns the position of Polish communists in the Soviet state, their role in the Polish-Bolshevik War, activity amongst the Polish population in post-revolutionary Russia as well as amongst Polish POWs. The article is an attempt to answer the question: how to evaluate the activity of Polish communists in the Soviet country in the first years after the revolution? Text is based mainly on archival material from the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI) in Moscow and collections of a few Ukrainian and Polish archives (Donetsk, Warsaw).

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono koncepcje i wizje badaczy polskich działających w XIX i na początku XX w. Dotyczyły one rozległości terytorialnej odrodzonego w przyszłości państwa polskiego. Nawiązywały początkowo do granic historycznej Rzeczypospolitej.
After the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was liquidated and disappeared from the map of Europe at the end of the 18th century, and was partitioned by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Polish activists of the independence movements never consented to the fact and continued to work for the revival of the Polish state. One of the issues pondered about was that of the future boundaries of this state. Initially, the issue was not complicated at all, since it was commonly held that the sole just solution would be the return to the historical boundaries of 1772. In the later period, the awareness arose that this option cannot be realised. This was not only the consequence of the stable and disadvantageous for Poland geopolitical situation in Europe, but also of the ethnic diversification of the territory of the former Commonwealth. That is why various concepts started to appear, concerning the future boundaries of Poland, considering the historical, geopolitical, strategic, and ethnic conditioning. These concepts were primarily the visions of individual scholars or activists, but often they did represent definite ideological and political orientations. The article presents and comments upon some of these designs. Those more original in substantive terms, and containing an interesting cartographic illustration, were selected for presentation. Thusthe article treats the concepts authored by: Oskar Żebrowski, Stanisław Tomaszewski, Aleksander Janowski, Czesław Jankowski, Włodzimierz Wakar, Wiktor Skarga-Dobrowolski, and Józef Jaskólski. These concepts, postulating the shape of boundaries of Poland, differed significantly as to the general territorial reach of the country and the shapes of its boundaries. Some of them were of clear maximalist character, while other ones were more moderate, and so had higher chances of implementation. The two last proposals for the boundaries of Poland, presented in the article, were already the official documents. The first of those two represented the position of the Polish National Committee, which was active in Lausanne in the years 1917–1918. The last concept of the boundary of Poland, shown in the article, was the official stance of the authorities of the newly re-established Polish state, which was presented at the Peace Conference in Paris in 1919. This concept was developed by Roman Dmowski, who headed Polish delegation at this conference. At the end of the article this most important design, prepared for the Versailles conference, is compared to the actual course of boundaries of the Polish state as it re-emerged after the First World War.

POLISH IMMIGRANTS
THE 1980S AND 1990S
POLISH DIASPORA IN CANADA
HELP FOR IMMIGRANTS
Opis:
In the 1980s and 1990s, Canada accepted more than 115,000 Polish immigrants. Some of them went through refugee camps in Western Europe, some arrived in Canada from the U.S., and there were also those who came directly from Poland. This great influx of Poles to Canada was caused by a confluence of factors. The most vital was obviously the economic and political situation in Poland, but Canada’s immigration policy also played a significant role, particularly the new regulations enacted in 1978. They gave temporary preferences for East-European Self-Exiled Persons – those who left the Communist bloc and could not or did not want to return to their home countries. It is worth emphasizing that the Self-Exiled class formally existed in Canada until as late as 1990. Moreover, the new Canadian regulations enabled admitting immigrants who were sponsored by Canadian residents. This allowed the Canadian Polish Congress (CPC), following the1981 agreement with the Minister of Employment and Immigration, to act as a guarantor to persons and institutions bringing in immigrants. With the cooperation of the CPC, ethnic organizations, and Roman Catholic Church institutions, a network of Polish information and aid centers was established in Canada. They were actively supporting the Canadian system of assistance for new immigrants, helping the newly arrived to adapt to life in a new country.

Opis:
One of the more important issues drawing the attention of Polish scholars and publishers in the past quarter-century has been undoubtedly the condition and role of the Polish intelligence during the social and political changes in the 20th century, with special attention paid to its engagement in the building process of the chunks of the Polish Third Republic. A thorough analysis of the aforementioned problem allows for noticing the very clear attitude evolution process and acceptable system of values, although its representatives still think themselves to be a separate social layer with clear social and political tasks to complete. From the point of view of the issue described in this article, it seems relevant in the way that these changes, above all related to new regime reality and the inevitable civilisation and generation changes, naturally influenced not only the ability to alter reality, but also the character of the visions of rebuilding and modernise the Republic, formulated within its boundaries.

Opis:
Financial market supervision is exercised by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (PFSA). It is a central public administration authority, but not a government administration authority. Since 1 January 2019, it has become a body of a state legal entity – the Office of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (UKNF). A number of systemic changes concerning the shape of financial market supervision were introduced based on limited objectives without a broader analysis of the systemic consequences of these changes being conducted. This also applies to the recognition of the Office of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority as a state legal entity, and the Polish Financial Supervision Authority and its Chairman as authorities of the Office. Under administrative law, the Office remains the work apparatus of the Authority.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the results of research conducted in one of the Polish colonies in South Brazil. The object of the research were Polish language lessons taking place in this rural community. The methodological tools were: a questionnaire, answered by all the students, lessons observations and interviews with volunteers among the students and with the teacher. The article discusses the context and the conditions in which the lessons are held. It describes the students group, which is very diversified in terms of age and language competence. It was established that, depending on the definition applied, all the students or a part of them can be classified as heritage language learners (HLLs). The learners reasons for starting Polish classes and their objectives were also examined. Based on the observations and the interviews, it was concluded that the lessons are not adjusted to HLLs` needs, mainly due to the lack of access to specific teacher training and materials.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyse entrepreneurial behaviour of Polish society and level of entrepreneurship in Poland in the years 2014-2018. Design/methodology/approach: The first part of the article is based on an analysis of literature on the issues discussed. Then, based on the GEM Reports, the various manifestations of entrepreneurship and its level in Poland in 2014-2018 was assessed. Findings: The conducted research indicates that more and more Poles see business opportunities in their environment and do not feel fear of failure. On the other hand, fewer people plan to set up their own business, which is undoubtedly the reflection of a good situation in the labour market, which allows people to freely choose between their own business and labour for hire, which, in turn, affects a decline in entrepreneurial intentions. The better motivation structure of young entrepreneurs is also visible in Poland, as most people start their own business seeing it as an opportunity rather than necessity. Originality/value: The analysis allows the identification of areas requiring changes. Therefore, it may constitute the basis for the government to take appropriate actions to increase the level and quality of entrepreneurial activity.
