Opis:
In this note a free vibration analysis of periodic three-layered sandwich structures is performed. The equations of motion of such structures, which are derived basing on Kirchhoff's thin plate theory, contain periodic, non-continuous and highly oscillating coefficients, which makes them difficult to solve. In this work, the tolerance averaging technique is applied in order to transform the mentioned system of equations into a form with constant coefficients, which takes into account the effect of the microstructure size. The differences between two modelling procedures are shown and discussed. Eventually, formulas for free vibration frequencies of an exemplary 2D structure are derived and an analysis of influence of certain varying material properties is performed.

The article presents research results performed on aluminum bronze CuAl10Fe5Ni5 (BA1055) castings used for marine propellers. Metallographic studies were made on light microscope and a scanning electron microscope to assess quantitatively and qualitatively the alloy microstructure. It has been shown that the shape, size and distribution of the iron-rich κ−phase precipitates in bronze microstructure significantly affect its mechanical properties. With an increase in the number of small κ−phase precipitates increases the tensile strength of castings, while the presence of large globular precipitates improves ductility. Fragmentation and shape of κ−phase precipitates depends on many factors, particularly on the chemical composition of the alloy, Fe/Ni ratio, cooling rate and casting technology.

The cast alloys crystallizing in Fe-C-V system are classified as white cast iron, because all the carbon is bound in vanadium carbides. High vanadium cast iron has a very high abrasion resistance due to hard VC vanadium carbides. However, as opposed to ordinary white cast iron, this material can be treated using conventional machining tools. This article contains the results of the group of Fe-C-V alloys of various microstructure which are been tested metallographic, mechanical using an INSTRON machine and machinability with the method of drilling. The study shows that controlling the proper chemical composition can influence on the type and shape of the crystallized matrix and vanadium carbides. This makes it possible to obtain a high-vanadium cast iron with very high wear resistance while maintaining a good workability.

This paper presents results of the research on impact of microstructure of austenitic-ferritic steel of duplex type on its mechanical properties and susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. As showed, improper processing technologies more and more often used in shipbuilding industry for plates and other half-finished products made of duplex steel may cause significant lowering their properties, which frequently makes their replacing necessary. Results of the tests on stress corrosion under tension with low strain rate (SSRT) conducted in an inert and corrosion (boiling magnesium chloride) environment , are presented. It was proved that even minor structural transformations taking place in 500ºC ageing temperature lower corrosion resistance of the steel. Structural transformations occurring in 700ºC temperature to a smaller extent influence susceptibility to stress corrosion of the steel, however they cause drastic drop in its plasticity.

The results of the modification of austenitic matrix in cast high-manganese steel containing 11÷19% Mn with additions of Cr, Ni and Ti were discussed. The introduction of carbide-forming alloying elements to this cast steel leads to the formation in matrix of stable complex carbide phases, which effectively increase the abrasive wear resistance in a mixture of SiC and water. The starting material used in tests was a cast Hadfield steel containing 11% Mn and 1.34% C. The results presented in the article show significant improvement in abrasive wear resistance and hardness owing to the structure modification with additions of Cr and Ti.

The objects under consideration are thin visco-elastic periodic plates with moderately large deflections. Geometrically nonlinear vibrations of these plates are investigated. In order to take into account the effect of microstructure size on behaviour of these plates a non- -asymptotic modelling method is proposed. Using this method, called the tolerance modelling, model equations with constant coefficients involving terms dependent on the microstructure size can be derived. In this paper, only theoretical considerations of the problem of nonlinear vibrations of thin visco-elastic periodic plates resting on a foundation with damping are presented.

Microstructure and corrosion resistance of the AE42 commercial alloy processed by extrusion and rotary swaging were investigated. Microstructure characterization showed an increasing volume fraction of the refined grains with increasing stage of swaging processing. However, their presence was limited solely to the peripheral ring of ≈1 mm in all studied conditions of swaged material. Corrosion resistance investigation showed continuous decrease of polarization resistance that was attributed to the grain refinement and insufficient homogenization of the alloying elements during the swaging process.

The lap joint welding of Al 3003 alloy by stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) was performed under the conditions of tool rotation and welding speed, and it was confirmed that the welding was performed under all conditions. The tunnel defects and pores were formed in the weld zone at the lowest tool rotation and welding speed, and it is increased, the weld surface has been improved. At the same tool rotation speed at the welding speed is increased, the grain size was refined in the stir zone (SZ) and thus the hardness increased by about 14% compared to the base metal. The tensile shear strength is measured to be 10 kN or more under most conditions, and in the 4000 rpm with high heat input, the shear tensile strength was measured relatively lower than other conditions due to excessive heat input of the material.

In this contribution there are considered vibrations of microstructured periodic slender beams, with axial force. In order to analyse the effect of the microstructure size of the beams on their vibrations the tolerance modelling method is applied. Using this method there are derived governing equations of two tolerance models - general and standard, base on two various concepts - weakly-slowly-varying functions and slowly-varying functions. These models are applied to obtain formulas of lower order and higher order frequencies with influence of the axial force. To evaluate these results of the modelling the formula of lower order frequencies in the framework of the asymptotic model (neglecting the effect of the microstructure size) is also derived.

Co-Cr-Mo based sheet I-WP lattice was fabricated via laser powder bed fusion. The effect of microstructure and the I-WP shape on compressive mechanical response was investigated. Results of compression test showed that yield strength of the sheet I-WP was 176.3 MPa and that of bulk Co-Cr-Mo (reference material) was 810.4 MPa. By applying Gibson-Ashby analytical model, the yield strength of the lattice was reversely estimated from that of the bulk specimen. The calculated strength of the lattice obtained was 150.7 MPa. The shape of deformed lattice showed collective failure mode, and its microstructure showed that strain-induced martensitic transformation occurred in the overall lattice. The deformation behavior of additively manufactured sheet I-WP lattice was also discussed.

The paper analyzes the changes of microstructure, chemical and phase composition taking place in the joint area of explosively welded carbon steel with zirconium sheets and their effect on the strength of such connection. The performed analysis showed that the ‘dynamic’ changes of temperature accompanying such processes are of key importance. The explosive welding process leads to a local melting of the metal sheets, which next allows crystallization of brittle phases. Presence of the latter affects the mechanical properties of the final clad. Extremely high cooling rates in the joining area favour, the formation of meta-stable phases. It was observed that, in order to obtain joint of high strength, a presence of thin continuous re-melted layer between the joined metal sheets is necessary. This layer, of mixed amorphous and nano-crystalline microstructure, of tens of nanometers thick, enables formation of a ‘good weld’ between the joined metal sheets.

The article discusses the construction of greases and shows the specific influence of intermolecular interaction on the stability of the microstructure of the grease composition. The paper deals with experimental studies to modify the current standard procedures for measuring the consistency of greases. The modification consists in introducing the continuous recording of the penetration value of the product by using a laser triangulation technique. Results of the preliminary tests indicate that this modification enables the observation of the microstructure stability of the grease during the strain associated with dipping the cone. The article contains an analysis of observed curve fluctuations that may be the trapping of the stress relaxation effect in the structure of greases. An attempt to determine the average time and values of the relaxation effects for greases is made. Results indicate that the use of continuous recording of the position of measurement cone allows researchers to expand the information obtained on penetration measurement.

Avoiding that kind of wear by appropriate selection of technological parameters, sort of burning carbides and their microstructure constitutes basic information about reliability of the tool. This paper presents the findings from the experimental testing of the impact SC grain size in end mills on the cutting tool tooth (bit) service life and surface topography after slot milling Ti6Al4V alloy parts. The tool wear indicator was determined in compliance with PN-ISO 8688:1996. It was demonstrated that ultra fine grain SC milling cutters are the most resistant to chipping, whereas the surfaces machined with these cutting tools reveals the lowest roughness. The coarse grain SC milling cutters are among those with the shortest service life of all tested tools.

The paper presents research results on the selection of parameters for the asymmetric rolling process of bimetallic plates 10CrMo9-10+X2CrNiMo17-12-2. They consisted in determining the optimum parameters of the process, which would be ensured to obtain straight bands. Such deformation method introduces in the band the deformations resulting from shear stress, which affect changes in the microstructure. But their effect on the structure is more complicated than in the case of homogeneous materials. It has been shown that the introduction of asymmetric conditions into the rolling process results in greater grain refinement in the so-called hard layer. There was no negative effect on the structural changes in the soft layer observed.

Opis:
Secondary or multiple remelted alloys are common materials used in foundries. For secondary (recycled) Al-Si-Cu alloys, the major problem is the increased iron presence. Iron is the most common impurity and with presence of other elements in alloy creates the intermetallic compounds, which may negatively affect the structure. The paper deals with effect of multiple remelting on the microstructure of the AlS9iCu3 alloy with increased iron content to about 1.4 wt. %. The evaluation of the microstructure is focused on the morphology of iron-base intermetallic phases in caste state, after the heat treatment (T5) and after natural aging. The occurrence of the sludge phases was also observed. From the obtained results can be concluded that the multiple remelting leads to change of chemical composition, changes in the final microstructure and also increases sludge phases formation. The use of heat treatment T5 led to a positive change of microstructure, while the effect of natural aging is beneficial only to the 3rd remelting.

Opis:
High manganese steel, also called Hadfield steel, is an alloy essentially made up of iron, carbon, and manganese. This type of steel occupies an important place in the industry. It possesses high impact toughness and high resistance against abrasive wear and hardens considerably during work hardening. The problem with this kind of steel is the generation of carbides at the grain boundaries after the casting. However, heat treatment at the high-temperature range between 950°C and 1150°C followed by rapid quenching in water is proposed as a solution to remove carbides and obtain a fully austenitic structure. Under the work hardening effects, the hardness of Hadfield steel increases greatly due to the transformation of the austenite γ to martensite ε or α and mechanical twinning, which acts as an obstacle for sliding dislocations. Hot machining is the only solution to machine Hadfield steel adequately without damage of tools or changing the mechanical characteristics of the steel. The choice of welding parameters is important to prevent the formation of carbides and obtain welded steel with great characteristics. This paper aims to give an overview about Hadfield steel, element addition effect, microstructure, heat treatments, work hardening, machinability and welding processes.

AZ91 alloy was cast in a steel mould pre-exposed to three different temperatures: -196 ºC, 20 ºC and 650 ºC. The aim of the study was to determine the difference in the microstructure and mechanical properties between the castings formed in a cold mould and those solidifying under near-equilibrium conditions in a mould pre-heated to 650 ºC. Solidification at a low temperature led to dispersion of the structure elements as well as supersaturation of the solid solution of aluminium in magnesium. The heat treatment results indicate that the alloy solidified in the mould pre-exposed to 20 ºC can be successfully aged (heat treated to the T5 temper). It was found that the effect of the ageing process (T5 temper) was greater than the effect of the microstructure fragmentation, which was due to rapid solidification. The ageing results were assessed by comparing the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91 brought to the T5 condition with those obtained for the material in the T6 condition.

Opis:
One of the possible options as a material for protective layers is aluminum foams which become also very popular due to their lightweight and excellent plastic energy absorbing properties. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry with continued research to further understand foam properties. Compressed foaming materials exhibit extensive plastic response, while the initial elastic region is limited in tension by a tensile brittle-failure stress. Aluminum foams have become also an attractive material as blast protective layers due to their desirable compressive properties. With different material engineering techniques (as, for example double-layer foam cladding) they can be customized to achieve the most desirable properties. Energy absorption capacity of foams microstructures under blast load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model Initial research indicates that energy absorbed by the cladding is much larger than that under quasi-static conditions due to strain rate effect. In this paper a numerical model of a closed cell aluminum foam idealistic microstructure was presented. The quasi static compression tests were carried out with the use of LS Dyna computer code. Then the sample was numerically loaded with the blast wavefrom detonation of explosives and its behavior was analyzed. The results ofboth analyses were compared.

The study presents the comparative analysis of competitive techniques of forging and its effect on microstructure. Numerical modeling of temperature and strain fields let theoretical prediction of the microstructure development in multi-stage drop forging process consisting of progressive sequence of multiple blows in preforming and die-impression forging operations. The aim of the modeling was prediction of the parameters of austenite in as-forged condition, prior to direct cooling and microstructure parameters of transformation products. Dynamic recrystallization kinetics were analyzed with use of Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) model, taking advantage of numerically calculated of temperature, strain and strain-rate in selected location in the volume of the part. The obtained results show the possibility of look-ahead microstructure prediction in multi-stage hammer-forging process and form the basis for comprehensive selection of the forging process parameters aimed at producing required microstructure and its uniformity in the bulk.

Opis:
The study was concerned with the effect of the percentage share of meat material, plant material and extrusion temperature on the process run and physical properties of extrudates. Meat-bone pulp (MBP) from mechanical de-boning of poultry carcasses, faba bean wholemeal, and barley grain meal were used in this study. The extrusion process was conducted using a twin-screw extruder with counter-rotating conical screws. It was demonstrated that the extruder used in this study permits the processing of blends with up to 25% meat-bone material content. The extrudates obtained were characterised by a loose, gritty-like granular form. Pellet durability index (PDI) of extrudates ranged from 60.30 to 96.24%. Increase in the content of MBP caused a decrease of PDI. Increase of the percentage share of MBP from 5 to 10% caused an increase of the water absorption index (WAI). However, no clear pattern was observed for WAI value as a result of increases in MBP above the 10% level. Likewise, no significant effect of MBP on the water solubility index (WSI) was noted. Extrusion temperature increase from 130 to 250°C caused an increase in PDI. Analysis of microstructure revealed a significant effect of process temperature on the structure of extrudates. At higher temperatures the formation of fibrous structures was observed, that might be responsible for increasing the PDI. Only slight, but statistically significant changes in the values of WSI and WAI, caused by process temperature change, were noted.
Wykazano możliwość przetwarzania mieszanek z udziałem miazgi mięsno kostnej dochodzącym do 25%. Odnotowano nieznaczne, statystycznie istotne (Duncan, p ≤ 0,05), zmiany wartości WSI i WAI wywołane zmianą temp. procesu.

The paper analyzes the influence of different heat treatment processes on the mechanical properties of low-alloy high-strength steel denoted by Polish Standard (PN) as 10MnVNb6. One of the findings is that, after aging, the mechanical properties of rolled steel are high: the yield strength may reach > 600 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strength is > 700 MPa. These properties are largely dependent on the grain size and dispersion of the strengthening phase in the ferrite matrix. Aging applied after hot rolling contributes to a considerable rise in the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. The process of normalization causes a decrease in the average grain size and coalescence (reduction of dispersion) of the strengthening phase. When 10MnVNb6 steel was aged after normalization, there was not a complete recovery in its strength properties.

319 alloy has been selected for the study in the present work due to its wide use in many applications. 319 alloy is used in automotive and aerospace industry for the complicated castings which must comply high strength requirements. In practice, the most common elements with the modifying effect are strontium, sodium and antimony. The addition of these elements leads to a change in the shape of eutectic silicon, resulting in an increase of the mechanical characteristics and the microstructure. An experimental program has been undertaken to explore the effect of antimony on chosen mechanical properties and the microstructure of investigated alloy. An analysis of the results of these experimental works is made in order to determine an optimum Sb (Al-10% Sb) addition to produce material exhibiting desirable properties. Experimental works have showed that the addition of the Al-10% Sb results in similar or even higher mechanical properties than the conventional 319 alloy. Based on the carried out experiments the best combination of mechanical properties has been achieved by the addition of 2 000 ppm Al-10% Sb.

The article shows the effect of the increased carbon content on the microstructure and properties of two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Alloys with different carbon content (0.2 and 0.5 wt.%) were produced in vacuum induction furnace with cooper crucible. It was shown that the addition of carbon at the level of 0.2 wt.% increases hardness and strength properties, affects structural stability, results in grain refinement as well as improves creep and oxidation resistance. However, it has a negative effect on plastic deformation. Increasing the carbon content to the 0.5 wt.% causes the further improvement in the creep and oxidation resistance and microstructure refinement of the tested alloys, resulting also in decrease such properties as plasticity, hot deformability and in case of the susceptibility to cold plastic deformation to unacceptable level.

The Effects of Sc on the microstructural and thermal properties and microhardness values were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and a Vickers microhardness tester. Experimental results revealed that the addition of 2 wt. % Sc to melt-spun Al-10Ni alloys changed their brittle nature and hindered formation of cracks. The addition of Sc to melt-spun Al-10Ni alloys also changed the morphology of Al3 Ni intermetallics from an acicular/needle – like to a rounded particle-like structure and led to reduction in their size. Formation of the metastable Al9 Ni2 phase was observed due to the higher constitutional undercooling caused by Sc addition. A considerable improvement in microhardness value (from 95. 9 to 230. 1 HV) was observed with the addition of Sc.

Opis:
In the work, the microstructure and selected properties of aluminium and its alloys (AlCu4Zr0.5, AlMg5, AlZn6Mg2.5CuZr) deformed with high strain rate were investigated. The cylindrical samples were compressed by a falling - weight-type impact-testing machine at the strain rate ranging from 1.77-6.06x102 s-1 in order to attain true strains between Φ = 0 - 0.62. After compression, the microhardness of the samples was tested and the microstructure was examined by means of both optical (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally the misorientation of selected microstructural elements using proprietary KILIN software was determined. The large density of shear bands, bands and microbands was the characteristic feature of the microstructure. The statistical width of the microbands observed in the microstructure was calculated using the mean chord method. The obtained data demonstrate reduction of the microbands width with the increase of deformation. The main object of investigations concerns the microstructure elements refinement affected by dynamic compression.

Opis:
This article deals with the effect of manganese that is the most applied element to eliminate the negative effect of iron in the investigated alloy AlSi7Mg0.3. In this time are several methods that are used for elimination harmful effect of iron. The most used method is elimination by applying the additive elements, so-called iron correctors. The influence of manganese on the morphology of excluded iron-based intermetallic phases was analysed at various iron contents (0.4; 0.8 and 1.2 wt. %). The effect of manganese was assessed in additions of 0.1; 0.2; 0.4 and 0.6 wt. % Mn. The morphology of iron intermetallic phases was assessed using electron microscopy (SEM) and EDX analysis. The increase of iron content in investigated alloys caused the formation of more intermetallic phases and this effect has been more significant with higher concentrations of manganese. The measurements carried out also showed that alloys with the same Mn/Fe ratio can manifest different structures and characteristics of excluded iron-based intermetallic phases, which might, at the same time, be related to different resulting mechanical properties.

Opis:
The AlMg10 aluminum alloy reinforced with SiC particles was subjected to friction stir processing (FSP). The composite was made by mechanical mixing and gravity casting. The mass fraction of SiC particles in the composite was about 10%. Evaluation of the effects of FSP treatment was performed by means of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, EDS and hardness measurement. It was found that the inhomogeneous distribution of SiC particles and their agglomeration, which were observable in the cast composite, were completely eliminated after FSP modification. The treatment was also accompanied by homogenisation of the material in the mixing zone as well as fragmentation of both the matrix grain of the composite and SiC particles. In the case of SiC particles, a change in their shape was also observed. In the as-cast composite, particles with dimensions from 30 to 60 μm and a sharp-edged polyhedral shape prevailed, while in the material subjected to friction treatment, particles with dimensions from 20 to 40 μm and a more equiangular shape prevailed. Pores and other material discontinuities occurring frequently in the as-cast composite were completely eliminated after friction modification. The recorded changes in the microstructure of the material were accompanied by an increase in the hardness of the composite by nearly 35%. The conducted investigations have shown that FSP modification of the AlMg10/SiC composite made by the casting method leads to favorable microstructural changes in the surface layer and may be an alternative solution to other methods and technologies used in surface engineering.

In tins study, ingot metallurgy and powder metallurgy processes were used to incorporate 0.2 and 0.7 vol% of nano-size ZrO2 particles reinforcement to develop magnesium nanocomposite. Both of the processing methods led to reasonably fair reinforcement distribution, substantial gram refinement and minimum porosity in the nanocomposites. Strengthening effect of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement in the magnesium matrix was greater when incorporated using the ingot metallurgy process. The matrix ductility and resistance to fracture were significantly improved due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement when incorporated using the powder metallurgy process. Tensile fracture surfaces revealed that the less-ductile cleavage fracture mechanism of hexagonal close packed magnesium matrix has changed to more ductile mode due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 particles in all the processed nanocomposites.

The paper presents the results of research on GX120Mn13 modification performed with the SiZr38 inoculant. The microstructure of Hadfield cast steel in as-cast condition was studied through optical microscopy before and after inoculant introduction into the liquid steel. After heat treatment, mechanical properties and wear resistance tests were conducted to analyse the influence of the inoculant. The wear rate was determined according to the Standard Test Method for Determination of Slurry Abrasivity (ASTM G-75). The results show that average grain diameter, area of eqiuaxed grains crystallization and secondary dendrite arm spacing were lower after inoculation. After inoculation, the ultimate tensile strength and proof strength were higher by 8% and 4% respectively, in comparison to the initial state. The results of abrasion wear tests show that the introduction of 0.02 wt. % of zirconium significantly improved wear resistance, which was 34% better in comparison to steel without zirconium.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pH on the fundamental rheological properties of whey protein concentrates (WPC) and isolate (WPI) gels and on the microstructure of WPI gels. Higher pH caused a significant increase in shear strain and shear stress values of WPCs and WPI gels. At some pH value a drop in strain and stress was observed. For whey protein preparations with higher protein content this drop occurred at lower pH values. Particulate microstructures of WPI gels were produced in the pH range 4-7. Fine-stranded gel was produced at pH 3 while mixed and fine-stranded gels were produced at pH value above 7. There was no relationship between microstructure and the shear strain values. The highest shear stress value of WPI gels was observed at pH 8. At this pH a mixed microstructure was produced.
W zakresie pH 4-7 zaobserwowano powstawanie struktur ziarnistych (particulate). Drobne struktury (fine-stranded) zaobserwowano przy pH 3, a drobne i mieszane przy pH powyżej 7. Nie zauważono związku pomiędzy mikrostrukturą żeli WPI a wartościami odkształcenia. Najwyższą wartość naprężenia zaobserwowano przy pH 8. Otrzymany w tych warunkach żel miał budowę mieszaną.

The aim of this work was to study the microstructure and functional properties of CuNi2Si1 alloy. The material was prepared classically by melting, casting, hot rolling and cold rolling. The obtained strips were processed with combined operations of supersaturation, ageing and one of the intensive deformation method - repetitive corrugation and straightening. The efficiency of RCS operation in shaping of functional properties in precipitation hardened copper alloys depends not only on tool geometry and operating parameters but also on whether and at what stage of strip production the supersaturation operation was applied. Application of the supersaturation before RCS operation broadens the potential to shape the set of functional properties. Comparable functional properties of the precipitation hardened copper alloy strips can be reached without application of the supersaturation operation in their manufacturing processes. The process of RCS applied after annealing, and the potentially slightly lower mechanical properties would be compensated by higher electrical conductivity.

In this study the effects of cyclic freezing on microstructure of monomineral forms of bentonite were investigated. Samples of the non-frozen soil and the soil frozen were tested using scanning electron microscope SEM. The analysis of the photographs was conducted using Photo Shop CS4 software. Results obtained show that the microstructure of the frozen soil undergoes significant modifications. The analysis revealed increase in total area of pores. On the basis of statistical analysis it can be assumed that the specific surface area of bentonite depended on the type of exchangeable cation (Ca^2+, Mg^2+, K^+, Na^+).

Opis:
Cast Hadfield steel is a material with high resistance to abrasion, provided, however, that it is used under the conditions of high dynamic loads. To increase the wear resistance of the alloy under the conditions in which no large pressures are operating, carbide-forming elements are introduced to the alloy. However, this leads to the precipitation in castings, mainly at the grain boundaries, of increased amounts of complex carbides. The heat treatment of cast Hadfield steel consists in solutioning to obtain a purely austenitic structure with no carbide precipitates. Changes in microstructure as a function of the changing temperature of the solution treatment were traced in hammers for crushers cast from high-manganese steel with an addition of chromium (1.7% C, 16% Mn and 1.4% Cr). It has been found that the use of the solution treatment temperatures much higher or prolongation of the solutioning time (compared to standard heat treatment) does not lead to the formation of a purely austenitic structure.

The paper presents the results of tests concerning the effect of the extrusion process in the complex strain state on the microstructure and properties of one of magnesium alloy with aluminium, zinc and manganese, designated AZ61. Due to its specific gravity, it is increasingly being used in the automotive and aerospace industries to reduce the weight of structural elements. As a result of plastic deformation processes, rods with a diameter of 8, 6 and 4 mm were obtained from AZ61 magnesium alloy. The microstructure analysis was performed using light and electron microscopy (STEM) techniques in the initial state and afterplastic deformation. Microstructure studies were supplemented with a quantitative analysis using the Metilo program. A number of stereological parameters were determined: average diameter of grain, shape factor. A static tensile test was carried out at 250ºC and 300ºC, at deformation rates of 0.01, 0.001 and 0.0001 m·s-1. Better plastic properties after deformation using KoBo methodwere obtained than with conventional extrusion.

In this study, microstructure and mechanical properties of modified (Al10Sr) and grain refined (Al5TiB) A356 aluminum alloy were investigated. To determine the effect of modification and grain refining on the microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 alloy, density measurement, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope examinations and tensile tests were performed. As a result of the study, the highest density and the least percentage of porosity were measured for the modified (with Al10Sr) and grain refined (with 1.5% Al5TiB) alloy system. The lowest density values and the highest percentage of porosity were measured for the unmodified and non-grain refined alloy. According to the tensile tests, average ultimate tensile strength and the highest elongation were obtained for the alloy modified with Al10Sr and grain refined with 1.5% Al5TiB alloy. It was determined that average ultimate tensile strength and percentage of elongation increased as the amount of Al5TiB added for grain refinement and modified to A356 alloy increased.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the surface microstructure of chitosan films on the contact angle. Films without plasticising additives made of chitosan or regenerated chitosan were selected for the tests. A sessile drop method based on the European Pharmacopoeia was used to determine the contact angle. Due to the method of film production, the contact angle measurements were made on both the top and bottom surfaces of the film. For chitosan or regenerated chitosan films, the method of preparation slightly affected the difference in wettability between the top and bottom of the films, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, the wettability of the top and bottom of cellulose films varied greatly depending on the side of the film. Both chitosan and cellulose films had a homogeneous structure. There were differences in the microstructure between the top and the bottom of the sample in the cellulose film, a factor that affected the contact angle and thus the wettability of the surface.

Opis:
The study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure evolution and properties of an age-hardened Cu-3Ti-2Mg alloy. The precipitated Cu2Mg and β'-Cu4Ti phases consequently yield a depletion of the Cu matrix in regards to Ti and Mg solutes, which enhances the electrical conductivity. The Cu2Mg Laves phase and β'-Cu4Ti phase precipitates increase the hardness of the alloy due to the consistency and coherency of the later phase. However, the decrease of hardness is mainly associated with the coarse microstructures, that can be formed due to the phase transformation from metastable β'-Cu4Ti phase to more stable Cu3Ti phase. In the range of experiments, the optimum process is solution treatment at 700°C for 4 h, with subsequent age-hardening at 450°C for 4 h. The electrical conductivity, hardness, tensile strength, and elongation of the Cu-3Ti-2Mg alloy were 15.34 % IACS, 344 HV, 533 MPa, and 12%, respectively.

Opis:
Recycled Al-Zn-Si casting alloys can often be used in new cast products for mechanical engineering, in hydraulic castings, textile machinery parts, cable car components or big parts without heat treatment. Improved mechanical properties and favourable of recycled microstructure of Al-alloys can often significantly increase the lifetime of casting and reduce costs for fuel and reduction of environmental loading. The paper is focused on using one of possible technologies that provide increased mechanical properties of recycled aluminium cast alloys for automotive industry, and that is laser surface hardening. For study was used recycled AlZn10Si8Mg cast alloy. The effect of laser beam Nd: YAG lasers BLS 720 was evaluated with the laser power 50 W and 80 W on the surface of samples. The final microstructure of aluminium alloys depend on the laser process parameters. The changes of microstructure as a grain refinement of the microstructure after laser surface hardening was observed by using classical techniques of etching and deep etching with concentrated HCl. Microstructure was evaluated on an optical microscope Neophot 32 and SEM.

Purpose: This research aimed to prepare tetragonal zirconia polycrystals powder by coprecipitation method and study effects of addition of different amounts of nano Al2O3 (1, 2 and 4) wt.% on its microstructure and mechanical properties of (5Y-TZP) composite. Design/methodology/approach: The powder was uniaxial pressed at a pressure of 150 MPa and held for 60 s, and sintered at the 1500°C, held for two hours and then cooling down at 5°C/min to room temperature. Microhardness and fracture toughness tests were utilized to evaluate the mechanical properties of yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal composite. The microstructure has been observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM). Findings: The results showed an addition of nano Al2O3 has a great influence on hardness and microstructure, the increase in Vicker's microhardness of composite samples with the increase in the nano Al2O3 wt.% and microstructure were characterized with homogeneous zirconia distribution, grain growth destruction with the increasing percentage of nano Al2O3. The most important influence is the enhancing of the densification process as the porosity decreased. The highest hardness and maximum fracture toughness were recorded at 4 wt.% nano Al2O3. Research limitations/implications: Ceramic matrix composites are developed to overcome the brittleness of ZrO2 and the low toughness of alumina by formation, a large difference of elastic behavior between matrix and particles(dispersion phase )which disturbs the stress field as a dislocation comes near a particle. Practical implications: Zirconia has mechanical properties similar to those of stainless steel. Yttria-stabilized tetragonal Zirconia (Y-TZP) is growing used in dentistry due to its good mechanical properties such as hardness and fracture toughness. Thus, controlling of microstructure by adding nanoalumina plays an important role in enhancing these properties. Originality/value: Study the adding bitty percentage from nano alumina on microstructure and mechanical properties of (5Y-TZP) ceramic.

The effect of austempering parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 27MnCrB5-2 steel has been investigated by means of: dilatometric, microstructural and fractographic analyses; tensile and Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact tests at room temperature and a low temperature. Microstructural analyses showed that upper bainite developed at a higher austempering temperature, while a mixed bainiticmartensitic microstructure formed at lower temperatures, with a different amount of bainite and martensite and a different size of bainite sheaf depending on the temperature. Tensile tests highlighted superior yield and tensile strengths (≈30%) for the mixed microstructure, with respect to both fully bainitic and Q&T microstructures, with only a low reduction in elongation to failure (≈10%). Impact tests confirmed that mixed microstructures have higher impact properties, at both room temperature and a low temperature.

The effects of different types of process control agents (PCA) on the microstructure evolution of Ni-based oxide dispersion-strengthened superalloy have been investigated. Alloy synthesis was performed on elemental powders having a nominal composition of Ni-15Cr-4.5Al-4W-2.5Ti-2Mo-2Ta-0.15Zr-1.1Y2O3 in wt % using high energy ball milling for 5 h. The prepared powders are consolidated by spark plasma sintering at 1000°C. Results indicated that the powder ball-milled with ethanol as PCA showed large particle size, low carbon content and homogeneous distribution of elemental powders compared with the powder by stearic acid. The sintered alloy prepared by ethanol as PCA exhibited a homogeneous microstructure with fine precipitates at the grain boundaries. The microstructural characteristics have been discussed on the basis of function of the PCA.

High temperature vacuum brazing is a well-known and commonly used method for joining of nickel based elements and subassemblies of gas turbines, both for stationary and aviation applications. Despite the fact that currently used brazing filler metals meet stringent requirements of aviation and energetic industries, a lot of effort is spent on improving operational properties of the joints through modification of chemical composition or brazing process parameters. This paper aims for both of these aspects - its purpose is evaluation of the impact of filler metal composition, brazing gap width and process conditions on the microstructure of joints between sheet metal elements made of Hastelloy X nickel superalloy. Two different Ni-based filler materials (BNi-2 and Amdry 915) were investigated, based on the results of light and scanning electron microscopy evaluations, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and hardness measurements.

Opis:
In the most recent years the asymmetric rolling (AR) attracts attention of researchers and technologists. This process can improve some technological parameters (e.g. modification of rolling torque and load, power requirements, etc.) as well as provide the possibility of grain refinement in a relatively inexpensive way. Most of the reports concerning microstructural changes produced by AR refer to high deformations imposed in highly asymmetric conditions. However, such rolling conditions are difficult to control, so there are no prospects to their quick industrial implementation. The present paper refers to relatively low deformation and low asymmetry rate, that is much more interesting for the industry. It was shown that bending of the rolled band (important disadvantage of the AR technology) can be controlled by adjusting of the amount of deformation and asymmetry. It was also shown that ca. 30% reduction in thickness during cold rolling, together with a relatively low asymmetry, reduces significantly the grain size and produces a more fragmented microstructure inside grains of the polycrystalline copper comparing to the symmetric rolling (SR). The material hardness after AR is higher than after the SR. Moreover, the crystallographic texture asymmetry, expressed by its rotation around the transverse direction, is observed in the AR material.

Opis:
In this study, the microstructures and mechanical properties of X70 pipeline steels produced with varying Mo contents, accelerated cooling rate and intermediate slab blank thickness are systematically investigated. Results showed that the microstructures and mechanical properties of the X70 pipeline steels were strongly affected by Mo addition. The pearlite and proeutectoid ferrite formation is obviously inhibited in containing-Mo steel and the acicular ferrite (AF) is obtained in a wide range of cooling rates. With the increasing the cooling rates, the AF constituent amount increases. The grains can be refined by increasing the thickness of intermediate slab for enhancing the cumulative reduction rates, and meanwhile increase the number density of precipitates. It was proved by simulation and industrial trials that the low-alloy X70 pipeline steels can be produced increasing cooling rates and the thickness of intermediate slab without strength and toughness degradation which also reduce alloy cost.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań siluminu podeutektycznego z dodatkiem molibdenu przeznaczonego do odlewania ciśnieniowego. Badania obejmowały analizę termiczną i derywacyjną procesu krystalizacji, analizę metalograficzną mikrostruktury odlewów wykonanych w próbniku ATD i ciśnieniowych oraz określenie podstawowych właściwości mechanicznych siluminu. Wykazano zmianę w procesie krystalizacji badanego siluminu wywołaną zwiększeniem stężenia Mo do 0,5%. Stanowi to wzrost Rm o 7,6% i A o 13,8% w ujęciu względnym w stosunku do siluminu 226 bez dodatku Mo. Największą wartość umownej granicy plastyczności Rp0,2 i twardości HB uzyskano dla siluminu 226 bez dodatku Mo.
The article presents the results of studies of hypoeutectic silumin with a molybdenum addition used for pressure casting. The studies included a thermal-derivative analysis of the crystallization process, a metallographic analysis of the microstructure of casts made in a DTA tester and pressure casts, as well as the determination of the basic mechanical properties of the silumin. For the tests, silumin 226 was selected, which is a typical silumin for pressure casting. The AlMo8 master alloy was introduced into the silumin in an amount allowing the Mo concentration in the alloy to be about 0.1; 0.2; 0.3; 0.4 and 0.5%. The examination of the crystallization process showed an analogous course of the DTA curves of the silumin without the Mo addition and the silumins containing about 0.1; 0.2; 0.3 and 0.4% Mo. A change in the crystallization process of the examined silumin was established, caused by an increase of the Mo concentration to 0.5%. This change consisted in the occurrence of an additional thermal effect on the DTA curves, which did not take place in the silumin without the Mo addition or in the silumins with lower Mo concentrations. The microstructure of the silumin cast into the DTA tester with 0.3−0.5% Mo contained phases which were not observed in the alloys without the examined addition or with its lower concentrations. In the pressure casts, these phases were present in all the examined silumins with the Mo addition. The dimensions of these phases increase with the increase of the Mo concentration in the silumin. The performed studies of the basic mechanical properties of the silumins cast under pressure showed that the highest value of tensile strength Rm and unit elongation A were obtained for silumin 226 with the addition of 0.4% Mo. This constitutes an increase of Rm by 7.6% and of A by 13.8% in relative terms with respect to silumin 226 without the Mo adszczególdition. The highest values of yield strength Rp0.2 and hardness HB were obtained for silumin 226 without the Mo addition.

The work is a continuation of research on the use water mist cooling in order to increase efficiency of die-casting aluminum alloys using multipoint water mist cooling system. The paper presents results of investigation of crystallization process and microstructure of synthetic hypereutectic AlSi20 alloy. Casts were made in permanent mold cooled with water mist stream. The study was conducted for unmodified AlSi20 alloy and modified with phosphorus, titanium and boron on the research station allowing sequential multipoint cooling using a dedicated program of computer control. The study demonstrated that the use of mold cooled with water mist stream allows the formation of the microstructure of hypereutectic silumins. A wide range of solidification temperature of hypereutectic silumins increases the potential impact of changes in the cooling rate on a size, a number and a morphology of preeutectic silicon and eutectic α+β (Al+Si).

The novelty/value added of this paper is the comparison of the Epps effect between developed and emerging stock markets from Central Europe by means of the correction formula derived by the authors. The main goal of the study is to test whether or not asynchrony in transaction times is a considerable source of the Epps effect in the case of the Warsaw and Vienna stock exchanges for the most-liquid assets from these markets. Among all analyzed stock pairs on the WSE, asynchrony turns out to be the main cause of the Epps effect. However, the corrected correlation estimator seems to be more volatile than the regular estimator of the correlation. In the case of the VSE, evidence of the Epps effect is not unique. For the most-liquid and most-correlated pair (namely, ANDR-EBS), the analysis delivers similar results as for Polish stocks. However, the Epps effect could not be detected for the remaining pairs on the VSE. The presented analysis can be reproduced for the same data or replicated for another dataset; all R codes used in the computation within this paper are available upon request.

Characteristics of the microstructure of corrosion-resistant cast 24Cr-5Ni-2.5Mo duplex steel after introduction of 0.98, 1.67 and 4.3% Si were described. Based on the test results it has been found that silicon addition introduced to the corrosion-resistant cast two-phase duplex steel significantly reduces austenite content in the alloy matrix. Increasing silicon content in the test alloy to 4.3% has resulted, in addition to the elimination of austenite, also in the precipitation of Si-containing intermetallic phases at the grain boundaries and inside the grains. The precipitates were characterized by varying content of Cr and Mo, indicating the presence in the structure of more than one type of the brittle phase characteristic for this group of materials. The simulation using Thermo-Calc software has confirmed the presence of ferrite in all tested alloys. In the material containing 4.3% Si, the Cr and Si enriched precipitates, such as G phase and Cr3Si were additionally observed to occur.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to select the optimal content of zirconium introduced as an alloying additive to obtain the best strength properties of Al-Si alloy. A technically important disadvantage is the tendency of silumins to form a coarse-grained structure that adversely affects the mechanical properties of castings. To improve the structure, modification processes and alloying additives are used, both of which can effectively refine the structure and thus increase the mechanical properties. According to the Hall-Petch relationship, the finer is the structure, the higher are the mechanical properties of the alloy. The proposed addition of zirconium as an alloying element has a beneficial effect on the structure and properties of silumins, inhibiting the grain growth. The starting material was an aluminium-silicon casting alloy designated as EN AC-AlSi9Mg (AK9). Zirconium (Zr) was added to the alloy in an amount of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% by weight. From the modified alloy, after verification of the chemical composition, samples were cast into sand moulds based on a phenolic resin. The first step in the research was testing the casting properties of alloys with the addition of Zr (castability, density, porosity). In the next step, the effect of zirconium addition on the structure and mechanical properties of castings was determined.

Opis:
Casting is one method of making metal components that are widely used in industry and up to date. The sand casting method is used due to its simplicity, ease of operation, and low cost. In addition, the casting method can produce cast products in various sizes and is well-suited for mass production. However, the disadvantage of casting, especially gravity casting, is that it has poor physical and mechanical properties. Tin bronze Cu20%wt.Sn is melted in a furnace, then poured at a temperature of 1100°C into a sand mold. The cast product is a rod with 400 mm in length, 10 mm in thickness, and 10 mm in width. The heat treatment mechanism is carried out by reheating the cast specimen at a temperature of 650°C, holding it for 4 hours, and then rapid cooling. The specimens were observed microstructure, density, and mechanical properties include tensile strength and bending strength. The results showed that there was a phase change from α + δ to α + β phase, an increase in density as a result of a decrease in porosity and a coarse grain to a fine grain. In addition, the tensile strength and bending strength of the Cu20wt.%Sn alloy were increased and resulted in a more ductile alloy through post-cast heat treatment.

The combined effect of sulfur (S) and acid soluble aluminum (Als ) content on precipitates and microstructures in grain-oriented silicon steel were investigated. The results show that there are dominant AlN and a little amount of MnS-AlN composite in annealed hot-rolled band, and the amount of precipitates increases distinctly with increasing Als content, while S content plays a negligible role. The inhibitors that precipitate during hot band annealing can restrain the grain growth during hot band annealing and primary annealing, and the smaller grains of annealed hot-rolled band can contribute to the formation of {111} <112> texture during primary annealing. Lower S content is conducive to the formation of {111} <112> texture during primary annealing by promoting the formation of Goss texture during hot rolling.

This study attempted to manufacture an ODS alloy by combining multiple milling processes in mechanical alloying stage to achieve high strength and fracture elongation. The complex milling process of this study conducted planetary ball milling, cryogenic ball milling and drum ball milling in sequential order, and then the microstructure and tensile deformation behavior were investigated after additional heat treatment. The oxide particles distributed within the microstructure were fine oxide particles of 5~20 nm and coarse oxide particles of 100~200 nm, and the oxide particles were confirmed to be composed of Cr, Ti, Y and O. Results of tensile tests at room temperature measured yield strength, tensile strength and elongation as 1320 MPa, 2245 MPa and 4.2%, respectively, before heat treatment, and 1161 MPa, 2020 MPa and 5.5% after heat treatment. This results indicate that the ODS alloy of this study gained very high strengths compared to other known ODS alloys, allowing greater plastic zones.

In this work, thermo-mechanically treated 42CrMo steel was subjected to cryogenic treatment conducted by means of orthogonal design method, followed by low-temperature tempering to investigate the effect of different parameters of cryogenic treatment on wear resistance of 42CrMo steel and to optimize parameters of cryogenic treatment for improving wear resistance. The results of hardness test and wear test show that cryogenic treatment significantly improves wear resistance with marginal changes in coefficient of friction and hardness. Specifically, cryogenic temperature has the largest impact on wear resistance of 42CrMo steel, holding time has medium impact, and the parameter of treatment cycles has the least impact. The optimum parameters of cryogenic treatment are -196°C for 12 hours with one cycle for improving wear resistance. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis indicate that marginal changes in hardness and coefficient of friction may be owing to little amount of transformation of retained austenite, and the significant influence of cryogenic treatment on improving wear resistance of 42CrMo steel can be mainly attributed to segregation of carbon atoms promoted by cryogenic treatment resulting in more precipitation of carbides in subsequent tempering.

Effects of solution treatment on room temperature mechanical properties were studied in cast AZ91 (Mg-9%Al-1%Zn-0.2%Mn) and AZ91-0.5%Ca alloys. In as-cast state, the Ca addition contributed to the suppression of discontinuous β phase precipitation and the formation of Al2 Ca phase. After solution treatment, the AZ91 alloy had only a small amount of Al8 Mn5 particles, while β and Al2 Ca phases were still present in the Ca-containing alloy. In as-cast state, the AZ91-0.5%Ca alloy showed better yield strength and hardness than the AZ91 alloy. The solution treatment increased the elongation in both alloys, which eventually led to the increase in ultimate tensile strength. The solution treatment resulted in a marked decrease in yield strength and hardness in the AZ91 alloy, whereas the decrements in those values were relatively negligible in the Ca-containing alloy due to the residual phases and solution hardening effect of Ca.

Opis:
This article addresses the effect of cooling rate and of titanium additions on the microstructure of thin-walled vermicular graphite iron (TWCI) castings as determined by changing molding media, section size and Ferro Titanium. The research work was carried out on TWCI castings and reference castings of 2-5 mm and 13-mm wall thickness, respectively. Various molding materials were employed (silica sand and insulating sand ‘‘LDASC’’) to achieve different cooling rates. Thermal analysis was implemented for determinations of the actual cooling rates at the onset of solidification. This study shows that the cooling rates exhibited in the TWCI castings varies widely (70- 14oC/s) when the wall thickness is changed from 2 to 5 mm. In turn, this is accompanied by a significant variation in the vermicular graphite fraction. The resultant cooling rates were effectively reduced by applying an insulating sand in order to obtain the desired vermicular graphite shape. In addition, good agreement was found between the theoretical predictions of the solidification process and the experimental outcome. Ti additions in combination with LDASC sand molds were highly effective in promoting the development of over 80 % vermicular graphite in castings with wall thicknesses of 2 and 3 mm as evidenced by quantitative metallographic analyses.

Effect of heat treatment on micro structural changes in aluminium bronze This paper attempts to summarise the niicrostructural changes which take place in aluniiniuni bronzes during heat treatment. Another objective of this study was to map the potential of a certain type of aluminium bronzes for undergoing martensitic transformation. The methods, which were chosen for assessing the results of heat treatment with regard to their availability, included measurement of hardness and observation of inicrostructure using light and scanning electron microscopy. Additional tools for evaluation of microstructure comprised measurement of microhardness and chemical analysis by EDS. An important part of the experiment is observation of microstructural changes in the Joniiny bar during the end-quench test. Upon completing experiments of this kind, one can define the heat treatment conditions necessary for obtaining optimum properties. In addition, the paper presents important findings on how to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminium bronzes by special heat treatment sequences.

After welding stress relieving, solution heat treatment and ageing were also applied to preheated laser welded samples. Effects of heat treatment conditions on microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of robotic fiber laser welded joints were studied. Aged samples were found to be made of coarsened grains compared to microstructures of non-aged samples. There were increases in ductility and impact toughness of samples applied to ageing increased, while hardness and tensile strength of non-aged samples were higher. The highest value for tensile strength and for impact toughness in welded samples have been identified as 840 MPa and 27 J, respectively. Fractures in tensile test samples and base metal impact test samples took place in the form of ductile fracture, while laser welded impact test samples had fractures in the mode of intergranular fractures with either a quasi-cleavage type or tear ridges. EDS analysis carried out for all heat treatment conditions and welding parameters demonstrated that major element losses were not observed in base metal, HAZ and weld metal.

Also, we have varied ball milling time to investigate milling time parameter on the thermoelectric properties of n-type Bi2 Te2.7 Se0.3 powder. The powders were discrete at 10 min milling and later particles tend to agglomerate at higher milling time due to cold welding. The bulk fracture surface display multi-scale grains where small grains intersperse in between large grains. The maximum Seebeck coefficient value was obtained at 20-min milling time due to their lower carrier density. The κ values were decreased with increasing milling time due to the decreasing trend observed in their κL values. The highest ZT of 0.7 at 350 K was observed for 30-min milling time which was ascribed to its lower thermal conductivity. The Vickers hardness values also greatly improved due to their fine microstructure.

Opis:
In this research, aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) have been manufactured through friction stir processing (FSP) by reinforcing nano-sized SiC particles in an Al6061-T6 alloy. The consequences of the volume percentage of reinforced SiC particles on mechanical properties and microstructural features were analyzed for the developed AMMCs. Microstructural evaluation of a cross-section of a friction stir processed (FSPed) sample has been conducted through Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique. Microhardness tests were conducted athwart the cross section of FSPed specimen to obtain microhardness feature. A tensile test of FSPed samples has been conducted on a universal testing machine (UTM). Homogeneous distributions of SiC particles were found in the stir zone without any consolidation of particles. The size of the reinforcement particles was decreased slightly by increasing the volume fraction. It has been found that increasing the volume fraction of SiC particles, enhance the tensile strength and microhardness, but decreases the ductility of the aluminium. The maximum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and microhardness were obtained as 390 MPa and 150.71 HV, respectively, at 12% volume percentage of reinforcement particles. UTS and microhardness of the FSPed Al/SiC have been improved by 38.29% and 59.48% respectively as compared to Al6061-T6. The brittle nature of the FSPed Al/SiC has increased due to a rise in the volume fraction of nanosized SiC particles, which causes a decrease in ductility.

Turbine blades are flight safety parts in the jet engine. Therefore they should be characterized by very good mechanical properties, especially high creep resistance and fatigue strength at high temperature. The aim of this paper is evaluation of effect of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) on microstructure of blade airfoil made of IN713C superalloy in four important zones: (i) leading edge, (ii) trailing edge, (iii) suction side and (iv) pressure side. HIP treatment was carried out proving some significant microstructural changes. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis reveals some structural changes what may facilitate diffusion processes leading to simplify of a heat treatment (solution treatment and aging).

Opis:
The purpose of the research was to examine the influence of boron on the selected properties of low-alloy cast steels. The chemical compositions of the cast steels were designed especially for this study to contain different alloy elements. The first composition lacked significant alloying elements. The subsequent grades of cast steels had the addition of chrome, chrome with vanadium, and chrome with titanium. It was decided to investigate the influence of boron in the presence of such alloying additives on the temperature of phase transformations. On the basis of dilatometric curves, the characteristic temperatures of the phase transformations were determined. Additionally, to assess the influence of the cooling rate on the structure of cast steels, an analysis of their microstructure, after full annealing and quenching, was carried out.

Opis:
Metallic bearing alloys have different types, most of which are tin (Babbitt) or bronze based. Bronze bearings are used at heavy duty conditions. The goal of this research is an investigation on the effect of cooling rate and pouring temperature (two important factors in casting production) on the Brinell hardness and pin-on-disc wear resistance (two important properties in bearing applications) of bronze SAE660. The melt had prepared by induction furnace. Then, it had poured in sand mold in four different casting conditions, including pouring temperatures of 950 ºC and 1200 ºC, and cooling with water and air. Finally, the microstructure, hardness and wear resistance of the SAE660 had investigated. The results indicated that if the maximum hardness, along with the minimum weight loss due to wear (or maximum wear resistance) is required; the contents of intermetallic compounds, lead phase and the solid solution phase should be more. In this way, the samples which are cooled in air and poured at 950 ºC have the high hardness and the lowest weight loss.

Opis:
Improvement of Al-Si alloys properties in scope of classic method is connected with change of Si precipitations morphology through: using modification of the alloy, maintaining suitable temperature of overheating and pouring process, as well as perfection of heat treatment methods. Growing requirements of the market make it necessary to search after such procedures, which would quickly deliver positive results with simultaneous consideration of economic aspects. Presented in the paper shortened heat treatment with soaking of the alloy at temperature near temperature of solidus could be assumed as the method in the above mentioned understanding of the problem. Such treatment consists in soaking of the alloy to temperature of solutioning, keeping in such temperature, and next, quick quenching in water (20°C) followed by artificial ageing. Temperature ranges of solutioning and ageing treatments implemented in the adopted testing plan were based on analysis of recorded curves from the ATD method. Obtained results relate to dependencies and spatial diagrams describing effect of parameters of the solutioning and ageing treatments on HB hardness of the investigated alloy and change of its microstructure. Performed shortened heat treatment results in precipitation hardening of the investigated 320.0 alloy, what according to expectations produces increased hardness of the material.

In this work, the Zn-Co coatings were synthesized on AISI 4140 steel and aluminum plates by using potentiostatic electrodeposition technique in sulphate-based acidic baths with 0, 20, 40 and 60 gl¯¹ of borax pentahydrate, as additive. The effect of borax pentahydrate on the microstructure of the samples was observed using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometer. The deposition process was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The effect of borax pentahydrate on the corrosion resistance of the samples was studied by potentiodynamic polarization technique. The results have demonstrated, that the addition of borax pentahydrate was in favor of the growth of grains. The morphology of pyramidal islands on the surface was changed to a more flat structure. The results have also demonstrated that the effect of borax pentahydrate was not monotonous. With increasing concentration, the corrosion potential was at minimum and the charge transfer resistance $R_{t}$ was at maximum for the sample obtained from the bath with 60 gl¯¹ of borax pentahydate, indicating that this sample showed the best corrosion resistance. It was found that current density first decreased and than increased, due to adsorption of a complex of borax pentahydrate and/or changes in the morphology, however, the initial deposition potential was not affected. The addition of borax pentahydrate to the bath led to formation of the best Zn-Co deposits, composed of coalesced globular fine grains, smaller than ≈2 μm in diameter. In addition, all of the studied Zn-Co deposits consisted of η phases. It is suggested that Zn-Co deposits produced in the bath containing 60 gl¯¹ of borax pentahydrate probably offer sacrificial protection to the steel substrate.

Opis:
In the family of iron-based alloys, ductile iron enjoys the highest rate of development, finding application in various industries. Ductile iron or the cast iron with spheroidal graphite can be manufactured by various methods. One of them is the Inmold spheroidization process characterized by different technological solutions, developed mainly to increase the process efficiency. So far, however, none of the solutions has been based on the use of a reactor made outside the casting mould cavity. The method of spheroidization inside the casting mould using a reaction chamber developed at the Foundry Research Institute is an innovative way of cast iron treatment. The innovative character of this method consists in the use of properly designed and manufactured reactor placed in the casting mould cavity. Owing to this solution, the Inmold process can be carried out in moulds with both horizontal and vertical parting plane. The study presents the results of examinations of the microstructure of graphite precipitates and metal matrix of castings after spheroidization carried out by the Inmold process using a reactor and mould with vertical parting plane. Special pattern assembly was made for the tests to reproduce plates with wall thicknesses of 3; 5; 7; 10; 20 and 30 mm. The content of residual magnesium was determined for all tested castings, while for castings of plates with a wall thickness equal to or larger than 10 mm, testing of mechanical properties was additionally performed.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań siluminu podeutektycznego z dodatkiem chromu przeznaczonego do odlewania pod ciśnieniem. W charakterze stopu wyjściowego zastosowano silumin o składzie chemicznym zbliżonym do siluminu gatunku EN AC-46000. W celu wprowadzenia chromu do siluminu wyjściowego zastosowano zaprawę AlCr15. Przedstawiono wyniki analizy termicznej i derywacyjnej ATD (ang. Differential Thermal Analysis – DTA), przeprowadzonej w celu zbadania procesu krystalizacji siluminów. Cr.
The paper presents the results of studies of hypoeutectic silumin with a chromium addition used for pressure casting. A silumin with the composition similar to that of EN AC-46000 was used as the initial one. In order to introduce chromium into the initial silumin, an AlCr15 master alloy was applied. The amounts of the initial silumin and the AlCr15 master alloy were selected in the proportions making it possible to obtain about 0.1; 0.2; 0.3; 0.4 and 0.5 wt. % of Cr in the alloy. Both the initial silumin and the silumins with the chromium addition were examined. The results of the thermal and derivational analysis performed to investigate the silumins' crystallization process have been presented. The microstructure of the silumins cast into an DTA tester and under pressure has been demonstrated. The basic mechanical properties of the pressure cast silumins have been presented. The results of the DTA analysis showed an effect of the chromium addition on the course of the crystallization process of the examined silumin. Three thermal effects are present on the silumin's DTA curves, caused by the crystallization of the solid solution α(Al), and of two eutectics α + Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 + β and α + Al2Cu + AlSiCuFeMnMgNi + + β. The introduction of chromium in the amount of about 0.2 wt. % caused the presence of an additional thermal effect on the derivation curve, originating from the crystallization of the intermetallic phase containing chromium. The crystallization of this phase occurs before the precipitation of the dendrites of phase α(Al) from the liquid. The microstructure analysis of the silumins cast into the DTA tester showed the presence of precipitations of a “new” phase in the silumins containing 0.2% wt. Cr or more. With the occurrence of an additional thermal effect on the DTA curves as well as the “new” phase in the silumin's microstructure, the lack of phase Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 was observed. In the pressure cast silumins, the chromium addition also caused the formation of a “new” intermetallic phase, which occurs with the Cr content of about 0.3 wt. % or more. Its morphology is similar to a faceted one. With an increase of the chromium content, the size of this phase significantly increases as well. The investigations of the basic mechanical properties of the pressure cast silumins showed that the Cr addition makes it possible to significantly increase mainly the tensile strength Rm and the unit elongation A. To a lesser extent, this element caused an increase of the hardness HB. The values of the proof stress Rp0.2 of the initial silumin and the silumins with an increased chromium content do not change significantly. The highest mechanical properties were obtained for the silumins containing about 0.2 and 0.3 wt. % Cr.

This paper presents the results of research work related with the effect of calcium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91 alloy. Samples of appropriately prepared alloy grades containing the addition of calcium in different concentrations (from 0.1 to 2.5 wt%) were examined in a static tensile test at room temperature and at elevated temperatures (150°C). Examinations of the microstructure were also carried out and DSC curves were plotted. It was found that, compared to the base AZ91 alloy, with increasing calcium concentration, the tensile strength at elevated temperatures increases, too. This effect is due to replacement of the low-melting Mg17Al12 phase with calcium-containing phases like Al2Ca and (Mg, Al)2Ca and to enrichment of the interdendritic spaces with Ca. At the same time, the addition of calcium adversely affects the mechanical properties at room temperature, which can be explained by brittleness of the Mg-Al-Ca phases.

Opis:
Processes of severe plastic deformation (SPD) are defined as a group of metalworking techniques in which a very large plastic strain is imposed on a bulk material in order to make an ultra-fine grained metal. The present study attempts to apply Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), Hydrostatic Extrusion (HE) and combination of ECAP and HE to 99.5% pure aluminium. ECAP process was realized at room temperature for 16 passes through route Bc using a die having an angle of 90°. Hydrostatic extrusion process was performed with cumulative strain of 2.68 to attain finally wire diameter of d = 3 mm. The microstructure of the samples was investigated by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the microhardness was measured and statistical analysis of the grains and subgrains was performed. Based on Kikuchi diffraction patterns misorientation was determined. The measured grain/subgrain size show, that regardless the mode of deformation process (ECAP, HE or combination of ECAP and HE processes), grain size is maintained at a similar level – equal to d = 0.55-0.59 μm. A combination of ECAP and HE has achieved better properties than either single process and show to be a promising procedure for manufacturing bulk UFG aluminium.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a study on the effect of the flux density of heat carried away for the remelting area to substrate in the course of surface remelting with concentrated heat stream on values of structural parameters λ1D and λ2D of α(Al) phase dendrites in C355 alloy. The remeltings were made with the use of GTAW method, at arc current intensity I = 200 A and concentrated heat stream scanning speed vs = 200, 400, 600, and 800 mm/min. The used protective gas was argon supplied at rate of 20 l/min. It has been found that the increase of the rate of scanning with concentrated heat stream results in a change of the remelting-substrate separation surface shape consisting in reduction of the remelting width and depth. This increases the value of the flux density of heat transmitted from the remelting area to substrate which in turn acts in favor of reduction of structural parameters λ1D and λ2D characterizing α(Al) phase dendrites in C355 alloy.

Initial microstructural observation identified prior-β grain along the building direction before and after heat treatment. In addition, the material formed a fully martensite structure before heat treatment, and after heat treatment, α and β phase were formed simultaneously. Charpy impact tests were conducted. The average impact energy measured as 6.0 J before heat treatment, and after heat treatment, the average impact energy increased by approximately 20% to 7.3 J. Fracture surface observation after the impact test showed that both alloys had brittle characteristics on macro levels, but showed ductile fracture characteristics and dimples at micro levels.

The paper deals with the impact of technological parameters on the heat transfer coefficient and microstructure in AlSi12 alloy using squeeze casting technology. The casting with crystallization under pressure was used, specifically direct squeeze casting method. The goal was to affect crystallization by pressure with a value 100 and 150 MPa. The pressure applied to the melt causes a significant increase of the coefficient of heat transfer between the melt and the mold. There is an increase in heat flow by approximately 50% and the heat transfer coefficient of up to 100 fold, depending on the casting conditions. The change in cooling rate influences the morphology of the silicon particles and intermetallic phases. A change of excluded needles to a rod-shaped geometries with significantly shorter length occurs when used gravity casting method. By using the pressure of 150 MPa during the crystallization process, in the structure can be observed an irregular silica particles, but the size does not exceed 25 microns.

The samples of the as-cast AM60 magnesium alloy were subjected to Friction Stir Processing (FSP). The effect of FSP on the microstructure of AM60 magnesium alloy was analyzed using optical microscopy and X-ray analysis. Besides, the investigation of selected properties, i.e. hardness and resistance to abrasion wear, were carried out. The carried out investigations showed that FSP leads to more homogeneous microstructure and significant grain refinement. The average grain size in the stirred zone (SZ) was about 6-9 μm. in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ), the elongated and deformed grains distributed along flow line were observed. The structural changes caused by FSP lead to an increase in microhardness and wear resistance of AM60 alloy in comparison to their non-treated equivalents. Preliminary results show that friction stir processing is a promising and an effective grain refinement technique.

Opis:
The work is a continuation of research on the use of water mist cooling in order to increase efficiency of the die-casting process for aluminum alloys. The paper describes the multipoint sequential cooling system of the casting die and its computer control and monitoring. It also includes results of the tests and analysis of cooling methods during making of the casting. These methods differ from each other in the sequence of casting die cooling and cause effective changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of castings made of AlSi11 alloy. The study demonstrated that the use of multipoint sequential cooling with water mist affects the microstructure refinement and reduces the segregation in the cast as well as more than by 20% increases the mechanical properties of castings in the rough state. The study also demonstrates that the sequential cooling of casting die accelerates the cooling of the casting and shortens die-casting cycle.

Opis:
The effect of 0.2% addition of Mg, Co and Ce to 99.9% cast aluminium was studied by evaluation of changes in microstructure and mechanical properties. The microstructure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The Al99.9 alloy contained only Al-Fe-Si phase particles. Similar Al-Fe-Si particles were observed in alloy with 0.2% Mg addition, because this amount of magnesium was fully dissolved in the solid solution. The addition of cobalt resulted in the formation of Al9.02Co1.51Fe0.47 phase particles assuming the shape of eutectic plates. The electron backscattered diffraction map made for the alloy with 0.2% Co addition showed numerous twin boundaries with distances between them in the range from 10 to 100 µm. The addition of cerium was located in the grain boundary area. Cerium also gave rise to the formation of two types of particles, i.e. Al4Ce and Al-Ce-Fe-Si. The Al-Ce-Fe-Si phase is a nucleation site for the Al4Ce phase, which forms eutectic plates. The results showed that the introduction of additives increases the mechanical properties of the cast materials. The 99.9% cast aluminium has a hardness of 16.9 HB. The addition of 0.2% by weight of Mg, Co, Ce increases this hardness to 21.8 HB, 22.6 HB and 19.1 HB, respectively.

Opis:
Polycrystalline aluminium Al99.5 was deformed through the combination of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) by B route (4, 8 and 16 passes) and then by the hydrostatic extrusion (HE) using the cumulative way of deformation, just to the achieving the final wire diameter d = 3 mm. The microstructure of samples was investigated by means light microscopy (LM). Additionally the microhardness measurement and the tensile test were performed to determine the level of aluminium hardening. The texture was determined by using the Brucker Advance D8 equipment. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of severe plastic deformation exerted in the process of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and hydrostatic extrusion (HE) on the microstructure and properties of polycrystalline aluminium Al99.5. The microstructure observations both after the HE process and the combination of ECAP + HE revealed the elongated to the extrusion direction grains and numerous bands and shear bands. The bands and shear bands most clearly revealed at the perpendicular section. The performed investigations showed that with the increase of the deformation the aluminium level hardening increase. The highest properties of tensile strength - UTS = 218 MPa and microhardness level HV0.1 = 46 were obtained after 8 ECAP + HE.
Polikrystaliczne aluminium A199.5 odkształcono w procesie równokanałowego kątowego prasowania (ECAP) i kolejno wyciskania hydrostatycznego (HE). W procesie ECAP zastosowano 4. 8 i 16 przejść według drogi Bc. z kolei proces wyciskania hydrostatycznego prowadzono w sposób kumulacyjny, aż do osiągnięcia końcowej średnicy drutu d = 3 mm. Dodatkowo przeprowadzono pomiary mikrotwardości próbek metodą Vickersa i przeprowadzono próbę jednoosiowego rozciągania w celu określenia umocnienia aluminium. HV0.1 = 46.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to present preliminary results of researches conducted in PZL Mielec within the FAST_FSW project (INNOLOT program) on the influence of tool eccentricity on microstructure and mechanical properties of 1.6 mm and 0.8 mm thick Al 7075 T6 sheets joints. Samples were performed using CNC milling machine. The range of tool eccentricity was 0–0.3 mm, rotational speed and feed rate were variable. The influence of the applied welding parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of joints was assessed on the basis of metallographic inspections and tensile tests. Microstructural observations have shown that the change of FSW tool eccentricity affects the weld geometry: the mixing zone depth, the weld width, or the shape of the contact line.

Opis:
The irradiation-induced evolution of vacancy type defects in various iron-chromium model alloys and high chromium ferritic/martensitic steels have been studied using coincidence Doppler broadening spectroscopy. Specimens were neutron irradiated to 0.11 dpa at two different temperatures, 290°C and 450°C. It has been found that the microstructure (ferrite vs. ferrite/martensite), more precisely distribution of dissolved carbon within the matrix, is one of the key factor that affect response of the materials to neutron irradiation. Presence of dissolved carbon within the matrix leads to formation of stable and immobile carbon-vacancy complexes which act as traps for irradiation induced vacancies and therefore, leading to increased formation of vacancy clusters. Impact of carbon-vacancy complexes on defects evolution during neutron irradiation is relevant only for certain irradiation temperatures.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research on the influence of plastic deformation and cooling conditions on microstructure, hardness and a shape of CCT-diagram (Continuous Cooling Transformations) of newly developed multi-phase steel assigned for die forgings, combining high strength, crack resistance and fatigue strength. The diagrams of undeformed and plastically deformed supercooled austenite transformations of steel, containing 0.175% C, 1.87% Mn, 1.0% Si, 0.22% Mo as well as Ti and V microadditions in concentration of 0.031% and 0.022%, respectively, were determined. Dilatometric tests were performed using a Bahr 805 A/D dilatometer. Specimens were austenitized at the temperature of 1000°C for 300 s and successively cooled to ambient temperature at a rate ranging from 60°C/s to 0.1°C/s. In order to determine the influence of plastic deformation on the shape of CCT-diagram, samples were deformed at the temperature of 1000°C, using a 50% degree of deformation, and then cooled in the same rate range as the samples which were not plastically deformed. The tests showed the following temperature results: Ac3 = 960°C, Ac1 = 832°C and a relatively low MS temperature equal 330°C. Plastic deformation of steel at the temperature of 1000°C, prior to the beginning of phase transformations, leads to significant increase in the ferritic transformation range, shifting the temperature of the beginning of this transformation to higher temperature in the entire range of cooling rates. It was also revealed that the specimens, plastically deformed at the austenitizing temperature, exhibit higher hardness compared to the specimens which were not plastically deformed, cooled with the same cooling rate. The elaborated CCT-diagrams of supercooled austenite transformations constitute the basis for correct development of the conditions of thermo-mechanical treatment of forgings from the tested steel.

Opis:
With the addition of Al and/or Cu into the NdFeB based magnet, the soft free iron phase was not observed in the cast alloys while it exists in the microstructure of the undoped NdFeB ingots. For the undoped sample, free iron disappeared after hot deformation process. Grain orientation is not good and there are deviations in the growth direction of the lamellar grains which are not perpendicular to the pressing direction. On the other hand, there is a striking change that the intergranular chemistry of Al added ingot separated into Nd-rich phase and a ternary FeNdAl composition most probably formed at the pressing temperature of 750°C. The highest remanent magnetization of 7.47 kG obtained for this sample, it might be due to the hard magnetic properties of this ternary composition. For the Al-Cu added sample, the high $H_{c}$ and $B_{r}$ values of 7.71 kOe and 7.33 kG, respectively, can be attributed to the homogeneous distribution of the intergranular composition and good orientation of the magnetic grains by hot deformation process.

Opis:
In the present time, advanced high strength steel (AHSS) has secured a dominant place in the automobile sector due to its high strength and good toughness along with the reduced weight of car body which results in increased fuel efficiency, controlled emission of greenhouse gases and increased passengers’ safety. In the present study, four new advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have been developed using three different processing routes, i.e., thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP), quenching treatment (QT ), and quenching & tempering (Q&T) processes, respectively. The current steels have achieved a better combination of the high level of strength with reasonable ductility in case of TMCP as compared to the other processing conditions. The achievable ultrahigh strength is primarily attributed to mixed microstructure comprising lower bainite and lath martensite as well as grain refinement and precipitation hardening.
