Opis:
The aim of this work was to characterize the microstructure of LMO type ceramics. The ceramics obtained by the free sintering at two temperatures 1473 K and 1573 K and two sintering times 6 and 12 h was the test material. One series was also obtained by the hot pressing method for a comparison. In all the cases the material synthesis was conducted by the solid-state reaction method at 1173 for 24 h. Photographs of the specimen fractures were taken by a scanning electron microscope to characterize the microstructure of the ceramics obtained in a more detailed way. The VISILOG 4 system, enabling to calculate a lot of parameters characterizing the material microstructure, such as e.g.: a number of grains on the unit area, an average grain size, shape indexes of the grains in question, was used as well. It allows determining a grain size distribution, and a frequency of presence of grains with the specific shape index. By analyzing a set of the parameters obtained an influence of the technological conditions on the microstructure of the material in question, and on its properties and applicability at the same time can be determined.

Opis:
The presented research is directed to the porous ceramics microstructural behaviour assessment with the use of numerical methods. Such new material can be used for thermal insulation, filters, bio-scaffolds for tissue engineering, and preforms for composite fabrication. One of the newest and most interesting applications, considered in this work, is a usage of those materials for production of proppants for hydraulic fracturing of shale rocks. The hydraulic fracturing is a method of gas recovery from unconventional reservoirs. A large amount of fracturing fluid mixed with proppant (small particles of sand or ceramics) is pumped into the wellbore and its pressure causes the rock cracking and gas release. After fracturing the fluid is removed from the developed cracks leaving the proppant supporting the fracture. In the paper the grain porous ceramics which is used for proppant particles preparation was studied. The influence of grains distribution on the porous ceramics mechanical behaviour during compression was simulated with the use of finite element method.

Tests were carried out on samples of low-alloy ductile iron with additions of Ni, Cu and Mo, subjected to austempering heat treatment. The samples were austenitized at 850, 900 and 950 °C, and then austempered at T = 210, 240, 270, 300 and 330 °C. The ausferritizing treatment was carried out in a salt bath for the time τ = 2 - 8 hours. Additionally, tests and studies covered samples subjected to the ausferritizing treatment at 270 °C with the time of holding castings in a bath from 2 to 24 hours. Evaluation covered the results of the ADI microstructure examinations and hardness measurements. The ADI matrix morphology was identified counting the average number of ausferrite plates and measuring their width and spacing. The regression equations HB = f (τ, T) and τ = f (HB, T) were derived to establish the, so-called, “process window”, allowing obtaining a priori the required microstructure of ADI and, consequently, the required mechanical properties, mainly hardness, shaping the functional properties of castings, abrasion wear resistance – in particular.

Opis:
One of the possible options as a material for protective layers is aluminum foams which become also very popular due to their lightweight and excellent plastic energy absorbing properties. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry with continued research to further understand foam properties. Compressed foaming materials exhibit extensive plastic response, while the initial elastic region is limited in tension by a tensile brittle-failure stress. Aluminum foams have become also an attractive material as blast protective layers due to their desirable compressive properties. With different material engineering techniques (as, for example double-layer foam cladding) they can be customized to achieve the most desirable properties. Energy absorption capacity of foams microstructures under blast load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model Initial research indicates that energy absorbed by the cladding is much larger than that under quasi-static conditions due to strain rate effect. In this paper a numerical model of a closed cell aluminum foam idealistic microstructure was presented. The quasi static compression tests were carried out with the use of LS Dyna computer code. Then the sample was numerically loaded with the blast wavefrom detonation of explosives and its behavior was analyzed. The results ofboth analyses were compared.

Co-Cu-Zn ferrite material has been extensively used in multilayer chip inductors because of their good electromagnetic properties at higher frequencies and low sintering temperatures. In this research work, a comparative study on Co-Cu-Zn ferrite prepared from two different routes is reported. The two different routes are conventional ceramic sintering method (CS) and is microwave sintered (MS) method. The former route is most commonly used while the latter one is now gaining popularity in sintering processes. The work highlights that the sintering temperature and time were significantly reduced from 4 h and 1250 °C for the CS process to 20 min and 900 °C for MS process. Moreover, microwave sintering also improves the physical and electromagnetic properties of ferrite.

Opis:
Metal foams are new, as yet imperfectly characterized, class of materials with low densities and novel physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties. They offer a potential for lightweight structures, for energy absorption, and for thermal management; and at least some of them are cheap. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry in the aspect of crash and impact phenomenon. Energy absorption capacity of foams under dynamic load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model. In this paper the development process of a real closed cell foam microstructure based on finite element model with the use of SD scanning is shown. Computed tomography (CT) is a medical imaging method employing tomography created by computer processing. Digital geometry processing is used to generale a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The numerical analyses carried out with the usage of LS Dyna computer code of the quasi static and dynamic compression tests are presented. The most important mechanisms and phenomena that appeared in the microstructural sample are described. In the final part of these investigations the comparison process between numerical and experimental test was performed. The results confirmed the good correspondence between both tests.

The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of seed conditioning and flakes steaming (hydrothermal processes) on destruction of cell structure being responsible for seed's mechanical resistance. Commercial rapeseeds were pretreated in different conditions. Seeds of the series A were conditioned at 40°C, flaked and then roasted for 35 min to 94°C. Seeds of the series В were heated up to 80°C, cooled to 49°C, flaked and roasted for 40 min to 97°C. The technological usability and mechanical resistance of control and conditioned seeds were good. The conditioning parameters affected slightly the structure of the series В seeds, only. Distinct changes in the microstructure and particle size of roasted flakes were observed, whereas the microstructure and size of press- -cake particles for both series of seeds were the same. Taking into consideration the requirements for pressing, pretreatment conditions of the series В resulted in more advantageous mechanical properties of flakes.
Potraktowano zatem odmiennie dwie partie przemysłowych nasion rzepaku. W serii A nasiona kondycjonowano w temp. 40°C, płatkowano i prażono przez 35 min. W serii В nasiona podgrzewano do 80°C, ochładzano do 49°C i prażono około 40 min (temp. końcowa płatków 97°C). 1 i 2). Nasiona kontrolne i kondycjonowane serii A miały strukturę nienaruszoną (fot. 1-3). W serii В zaobserwowano niewielkie negatywne oddziaływanie obróbki hydrotermicznej na strukturę nasion (fot. 4). Prażone płatki z serii A mają naruszoną strukturę i dużą ilość otwartych komórek (fot. 5), a w płatkach serii В (oprócz silniej naruszonej struktury) widać większą fragmentację cząstek liścieni, zwiększony stopień otwarcia komórek i duże ilości tłuszczu pokrywającego prawie całą powierzchnię preparatu mikroskopowego (fot. 6 i 7). Mikroskopowy obraz wytłoku pozbawionego znacznej części tłuszczu był identyczny dla obu badanych wersji (fot. 8). Wyniki analizy stopnia rozdrobnienia płatków i wytłoku potwierdziły obserwacje mikroskopowe. Płatkowanie nasion kondycjonowanych A і В dało w obu przypadkach płatki o podobnej wielkości cząstek, natomiast rozkład wielkości cząstek w płatkach prażonych był odmienny. Rozkłady wielkości cząstek wytłoku był identyczne dla obu wersji (rys. 1). Mimo dużych różnic w warunkach obróbki wstępnej serii A i B, mikrostruktura i wielkość cząstek obu wytłoków były takie same, a charakterystyka badanych parametrów pozwoliła przewidywać dobry przebieg ekstrakcji. Stwierdzono natomiast, że warunki obróbki wstępnej serii В mają korzystniejszy wpływ na przygotowanie materiału do tłoczenia.

Other than granular and dispersive microstructures, the lamellar microstructure is one of the most-frequently observed traits in the case of metal alloys. This work defines a geometrical model of a lamellar microstructure and presents its stereological relationships as well as our computer-simulation results for this model. The applied methodology creates – at least from a theoretical point of view – a series of interesting possibilities in the field of quantitative description of this type of microstructure and examinations of the properties of the parameter estimators that quantitatively characterize it.
Mikrostruktura płytkowa to – obok ziarnistej i dyspersyjnej – jedna z najczęściej spotykanych w przypadku stopów metali. W pracy zdefiniowano geometryczny model mikrostruktury płytkowej, przedstawiono dla tego modelu zależności stereologiczne oraz wyniki symulacji komputerowej. In the work, the microstructure and selected properties of aluminium and its alloys (AlCu4Zr0.5, AlMg5, AlZn6Mg2.5CuZr) deformed with high strain rate were investigated. The cylindrical samples were compressed by a falling - weight-type impact-testing machine at the strain rate ranging from 1.77-6.06x102 s-1 in order to attain true strains between Φ = 0 - 0.62. After compression, the microhardness of the samples was tested and the microstructure was examined by means of both optical (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally the misorientation of selected microstructural elements using proprietary KILIN software was determined. The large density of shear bands, bands and microbands was the characteristic feature of the microstructure. The statistical width of the microbands observed in the microstructure was calculated using the mean chord method. The obtained data demonstrate reduction of the microbands width with the increase of deformation. The main object of investigations concerns the microstructure elements refinement affected by dynamic compression.

In the paper, results of investigations regarding temperature and strain rate effects on hot-deformed Cu-3Ti alloy microstructure are presented. Evaluation of the alloy microstructure was performed with the use of a Gleeble HDS-V40 thermal-mechanical simulator on samples subjected to uniaxial hot compression within 700 to 900ºC and at the strain rate of 0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 s-1 until 70% (1.2) strain. It was found that within the analyzed temperature and strain rate ranges, the alloy deformation led to partial or complete recrystallization of its structure and to multiple refinement of the initial grains. The recrystallization level and the average diameter of recrystallized grains increase with growing temperature and strain rate. It was shown that entirely recrystallized, fine-grained alloy structure could be obtained following deformation at the strain rate of min 10.0 s-1 and the temperature of 800°C or higher.

Opis:
Stereological description of dispersed microstructure is not an easy problem and is constantly a subject of research [1, 2]. From the practical point of view, the stereological description of this type of microstructures is essential in analyses of such processes as coarsening, spheroidization or in research of relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties (e.g. bearing steel). The method of computer simulation is a very comfortable and effective way to test properties of stereological parameters of a microstructure. The computer model of a dispersed microstructure presented in the work is based on the following assumptions: (1) particles of dispersed phase are spheres randomly distributed in space; the input data are: number of spheres in unit volume Nv, volume fraction of spheres Vv and distribution of sphere diameters in space (through the probability density function f(D)), (2) the system of spheres is being cut by the cutting planes. As a result of the simulation we obtain the distributions of flat sections' diameters. The correctness of the model performance has been verified considering two cases relating to which we know analytical relations between distribution of spheres in space and distributions of flat sections' diameters: (1) the simulated structure consists of spheres of equal size, (2) spheres are subject to the Rayleigh distribution.

Opis:
Alloyed silver-gold nanoparticles recently raised an interest in biomedicine as potential antibacterial and surface-functionalized agents for imaging, drugdelivery, and tumor thermo-therapy [1,2]. The here synthesized alloyed AgAu nanoparticles with different compositions of silver and gold, as determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), were prepared by reduction with citrate and tannic acid in aqueous media and subsequently functionalized by the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) [3]. UV spectroscopy confirmed that the particles consisted of alloyed Ag:Au and are not of a separate core-shell structure. The resulting nanoparticles were monodisperse and had a uniform size of ~6 nm, except pure Ag and Ag:Au-90:10, as shown by differential centrifugal sedimentation (DCS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and use of Rietveld refinement [4], the precise lattice parameters, crystallite size and microstrain were determined. Based on the results by XRD, DCS and TEM it was shown, that the nanoparticles were not twinned, except pure Ag and Ag:Au-90:10. Additionally, a distinct deviation from Vegard’s linear rule of alloy mixtures for the lattice parameter was found for the nanoparticles. This effect was also found for AgAu bulk materials, but was much more pronounced in the nanostate. Further investigations of the crystal structure of the alloyed nanoparticles by means of synchrotron radiation might be helpful to gain more information about the interactions of silver and gold atoms.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the influence of different heat treatment processes on the mechanical properties of low-alloy high-strength steel denoted by Polish Standard (PN) as 10MnVNb6. One of the findings is that, after aging, the mechanical properties of rolled steel are high: the yield strength may reach > 600 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strength is > 700 MPa. These properties are largely dependent on the grain size and dispersion of the strengthening phase in the ferrite matrix. Aging applied after hot rolling contributes to a considerable rise in the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. The process of normalization causes a decrease in the average grain size and coalescence (reduction of dispersion) of the strengthening phase. When 10MnVNb6 steel was aged after normalization, there was not a complete recovery in its strength properties.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present an example of the material microstructure characterization with the use of X-ray micro-CT and nanoindentation measurements. Firstly, the current scope of application of the aforementioned techniques is provided within different fields of science. Then, background of each of the methods is presented. The methodology of X-ray micro-CT is described with the emphasis on the Beer’s law formulation. In addition, the basics of the nanoindentation technique are outlined and major formulas for the hardness and Young’s modulus calculation are given. Finally, example results for a concrete sample are presented. The microstructure of the selected material is firstly characterized in terms of geometry using the results from the microtomograhy measurements, e.g., porosity and attenuation profiles, pore and aggregate size distribution, shape factor of pores, etc. Next, the results of the nanoindentation tests are provided, namely the hardness and Young’s modulus versus the height of the sample. The influence of the number of tests and statistical analysis on the final results is underlined.

Opis:
In this article the structural and mechanical properties of grain refinement of Cu-Sn alloys with tin content of 10%, 15% and 20% using the KOBO method have been presented. The direct extrusion by KOBO (name from the combination of the first two letters of the names of its inventors – A. Korbel and W. Bochniak) method employs, during the course of the whole process, a phenomenon of permanent change of strain travel, realized by a periodical, two-sided, plastic metal torsion. Moreover the aim of this work was to study corrosion resistance. The microstructure investigations were performed using an optical microscope Olimpus GX71, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The mechanical properties were determined with INSTRON 4505/5500 machine. Corrosion tests were performed using «Autolab» set – potentiostat/galvanostat from EcoChemie B.V. with GPES software ver. 4.9. The obtained results showed possibility of KOBO deformation of Cu-Sn casting alloys. KOBO processing contributed to the refinement of grains and improved mechanical properties of the alloys. The addition of tin significantly improved the hardness. Meanwhile, with the increase of tin content the tensile strength and yield strength of alloys decrease gradually. Ductility is controlled by eutectoid composition and especially δ phase, because they initiate nucleation of void at the particle/matrix interface. No significant differences in the corrosion resistance between cast and KOBO processed materials were found.

In the study the phenomenon occurring on the border of Al-Cu was also analysed. The produced Cu-Al and Cu-Fe composites presented ordered microstructure with the fibres uniformly distributed in the copper matrix. The composites underwent plastic consolidation to the degree which provided satisfactory mechanical and electrical properties. During the drawing the fibres deformed proportionally with copper matrix therefore their content in the cross section remained unchanged.

Chemical stabilization of soil is an effective improvement technique because it reduces the ability of the soil to swell. We added different proportions of magnesium chloride to an expansive clay and performed swelling, geotechnical characterization, and mechanical strength tests. The results show that the swelling potential and swelling pressure of the expansive soil were significantly decreased by the addition of magnesium chloride (MgCl2). This treatment also improved the physical and mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the soil. The soil's plastic limit, shrinkage limit, cohesion, and internal friction angle all increased linearly with the addition of the MgCl2 stabilizer. However, we observed that the liquid limit of the soil decreased as the level of magnesium chloride was increased.

Opis:
Gelatin scaffolds are in the interest of tissue engineering and drug release. The scaffold porosity and microarchitecture are of great importance in proper tissue regeneration. In this work, the freeze-drying method was used to produce the scaffolds. The effect of concentration of the initial gelatin solution and pre- -freezing temperature on the scaffold’s microstructure and microarchitecture (porosity, pores size, shape, and distribution) was evaluated. The mechanical tests of samples were performed. Moreover, the influence of the gentamicin sulphate addition on the gelatin scaffolds microstructure and mechanical properties was also studied. The linear relationship of porosity to the concentration of the initial solution was observed. Therefore, it is possible to obtain a scaffold with a planned porosity. Pores were interconnected with an aspect ratio between 1.5-1.8. For porosity 74 ± 9% the average pore size was 0.7 ± 0.6 mm, with most pores in the range 0.2-0.4 mm. For the samples with porosity 57 ± 14%, the average pore size was 0.2 ± 0.2 mm, with most pores in the range 0.05-0.2 mm. The process of pre-freezing the solution in liquid nitrogen caused the highest porosity of the sample, the smaller pores size and the lower pores size distribution in comparison to the sample pre-frozen in -20°C. The mechanical parameters for all the samples are sufficient for filling bone defects. The addition of a drug to gelatin caused only slight changes in the pore architecture. This material could be applied as a scaffold in the bone loss correlated to bacterial infection.

To reveal more detailed microstructure, the deep etching was made. This was obtained in the process of electrolytic dissolution. The microstructure of the sample was examined on the longitudinal and transverse sections using an Optical Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope. Using the Electron Backscattered Diffraction technique, phase map and analysis of phase were made. In this paper the analysis of Fe-C alloy eutectic microstructure is presented. Regular eutectic structure was obtained. The fracture surfaces show lamellar structure. Microscopic observation after electrolytic extraction indicates that the grains of longitudinal shape of eutectic cementite have been obtained. These grains are characterized by layered construction with many rounded discontinuities.

An investigation was carried out to examine the effect of austempering on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nodular cast iron GGG 50 (DIN EN 1563) alloyed with different amount of copper. Optical, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses were performed for microstructural characterization. In addition, hardness and tensile tests were carried out for mechanical properties determination. Specimens were austenitized at 900°C for an hour, then austempered for an hour at 330°C in salt bath and cooled at a room temperature in air. The results indicated that the addition of Cu to GGG 50 encouraged pearlite formation in the matrix structure. In addition, with the austempering heat treatment, the structure was transformed from ferrite + pearlite into ausferrite and retain austenite. Furthermore, for the alloy with 2 wt% Cu addition, it was noted that the graphite nodules diverged from sphericity and Cu was concentrated around the graphite. After austempering, mechanical properties were significantly improved and the highest mechanical properties were found at 1.5 wt% Cu.

The effect of chemical composition of the sintering atmosphere on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PM structural low-carbon steels is presented. The base powders were Astaloy CrL, Astaloy CrM, low carbon ferromanganese and graphite C-UF. From the base powders two mixtures with compositions of Fe-3%Mn-(1.5/3%)Cr-(0.2/0.5)%Mo-0.2%C were prepared. Following pressing in a steel rigid die, compacts were sintered at 1250°C for 60 min in a semi-closed container. 5%H2-95%N2 mixture and air were the sintering atmospheres. For sintering in air, lumps of ferromanganese were placed with the compacts in the container. After sintering, half of the samples were tempered at 200°C for 60 minutes in air. Mechanical tests (tensile, bend, toughness, hardness) and microstructural investigations were performed. The microstructures of the steels were inhomogeneous, mainly ferritic-bainic. Tempering of steel based on Astaloy CrM sintered in an atmosphere of 5% H2-95% N2 slightly reduced tensile strength and toughness: from 748 to 734 MPa and from 7.15 to 6.83 J/cm2, respectively. Chemical composition had a greater effect; steels based on Astaloy CrL and Astaloy CrM had tensile strengths 526-665 and 672-748 MPa, hardness 280-325 and 388-421 HV, respectively. The best properties were obtained after sintering in air of Fe-3%Mn-3%Cr-0.5%Mo-0.2%C without heat treatment: tensile strength 672 MPa, toughness 6.93 J/cm2, hardness 421.1 HV, 0.2 % offset yield strength 395 MPa.

This paper presents the possibilities of forming the microstructure as well as mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of Cu-3Ti alloy (wt.%) in thermal and thermomechanical processes that are a combination of homogenising treatment, hot and cold working, solution treatment and ageing. Phase composition of the alloy following various stages of processing it into the specified semi-finished product was being determined too. It was demonstrated that the application of cold plastic deformation between solution treatment and ageing could significantly enhance the effect of hardening of the Cu-3Ti alloy without deteriorating its electrical conductivity. It was found that for the investigated alloy the selection of appropriate conditions for homogenising treatment, hot and cold deformation as well as solution treatment and ageing enables to obtain the properties comparable to those of beryllium bronzes.

The maximum degree of undercooling ΔT was determined based on the cooling curves. The surface density of the grains (NA ) was determined and associated with the inverse of solidification interval 1/ΔTk . Titanium (contained in the charge materials as well as the modifier) has a significant effect on the grinding of the primary grains in the tested alloys. A DSC thermal analysis allowed for the determination of phase transition temperatures under conditions close to equilibrium. For series II and III, the number of grains decreases above 0.2 wt.% Mn with a simultaneous increase in solidification interval 1/ΔT2 . Opis:
Several recent studies have clarified the link between microwear features and diet among living carnivorans, but it is still unclear whether previously interpreted evolutionary trends for dietary specialization, based on examination of enamel microstructure, are consistent with such insights from microwear analysis. This study examined the relationship between microwear and microstructure features using a sample of fossil hyaenids and canids. Hunter−Schreger Bands (HSB) and microwear features were examined at the same magnification level using optical stereomicroscopy. Multiple trials conducted on each specimen showed higher variance of smaller (<0.03 mm) microwear features compared to large (>0.03 mm) features. The number of pits was positively correlated with more derived HSB in both p4 and m1; fossil teeth with derived HSB possessed microwear features similar to patterns found in modern spotted hyenas. Microscopic scratches were not as closely associated with HSB patterns, but large scratches were more tightly linked to HSB than smaller ones on p4. An examination of evolutionary trends in HSB specialization in the two carnivoran lineages showed that derived HSB patterns evolved prior to the highly robust craniodental characteristics typical of later bone−cracking ecomorphologies. Therefore, the increase of hard food in the diet of less specialized hyaenids and canids was accompanied by a mosaic mode of evolution, with microstructural changes preceding key macrostructural morphological adaptations.

The paper describes the influence of graphite shape, size and amount to electrical properties of different cast irons. Experiments of electrical resistivity measurements were conducted during solidification of four different melts in different time intervals from melt treatment by inoculation and nodularization. Metallographic analyses were made in order to determine the shape, size, distribution and amount of graphite and correlate results with electrical resistivity measurements. It was found out that nodular graphite is giving the lowest electrical resistivity and is decreased during solidification. Electrical resistivity of lamellar cast iron is increased during solidification since lamellas interrupt metal matrix severely. There is no significant difference in resistivity of vermicular cast iron from nodular cast iron. Smaller size of graphite and lower amount of graphite and higher amount of metal matrix also decrease resistivity.

The paper presents the results of research on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 12HMF steel after longterm service. The investigated material was taken from a pipeline with circumferential welded joint after 419 988 hours of service at the temperature of 490°C, steam pressure 8 MPa. Performed research has shown that the 12HMF steel after service was characterized by a typical microstructure for this grade of steel, that is a ferritic-bainitic microstructure without any visible advanced processes of its degradation. The investigation of mechanical properties has shown that the examined steel after service was characterized by a very low impact energy KV, and yield strength lower than the required minimum. Whilst tensile strength and yield strength determined at elevated temperature was higher and similar to the standard requirements, respectively. It has been proved that the main cause of an increase in brittleness and a decrease in yield strength of the examined steel should be seen in the segregation of phosphorus to grain boundaries and the formation of precipitate free zones near the boundaries.

The aim of this work was to develop basic parameters of hot rolling and controlled cooling technology allowing to obtain the microlaminated (lamellar) microstructure in a lean-alloy structural steel containing 3÷5 wt % Al. Thermo-mechanical rolling tests of two experimental steels were carried out in a semi-industrial line comprising a one – stand reversing rolling mill. The final microstructure of the specimens subjected to rolling in the γ + α stability region characterised with the microlaminated morphology composed of lamellae of ferrite with thickness down to 1 μm or less and lamellae or grains of phases developed during transformation of the austenite. Determined parameters of the thermo-mechanical processing allowed to achieve very attractive mechanical properties of the experimental steels: tensile strength over 1.0 GPa and ductility level (total elongation) better than 15%.

The earliest Cambrian Meishucunian phosphoritic succession in eastern Yunnan,China, contains well−preserved molluscan shells that offer insights into the early evolution of skeletonization. Phosphate internal moulds, phosphate replaced originally carbonate shells, and phosphate coatings show lamello−fibrillar structure, prismatic structure, and regularly foliated structure. The lamello−fibrillar structure appears earlier in the fossil record than laminar structures such as nacreous or foliated structures. It has been identified in fossil mollusks, which occur in China as early as the lower phosphate layer of the Zhongyicun Member of the Meishucunian. Therefore, the lamello−fibrillar structure appears to be primitive in mollusks. The lamello−fibrillar and prismatic aragonite is the most common shell material of molluscan skeletons in the Early Cambrian Meishucunian and equivalents around the world. Although the early molluscan microstructure is not so diverse as that of extant mollusks,it may be of use in high rank taxonomic classification as shown by the early conchiferan mollusks discussed here. These mollusks are characterized by the horizontal fibrillae that are layered and parallel, and thereby differ from hyoliths,in which the horizontal fibrillae appear to be in the form of the bundles of fibres that can branch or anastomose.

319 alloy has been selected for the study in the present work due to its wide use in many applications. 319 alloy is used in automotive and aerospace industry for the complicated castings which must comply high strength requirements. In practice, the most common elements with the modifying effect are strontium, sodium and antimony. The addition of these elements leads to a change in the shape of eutectic silicon, resulting in an increase of the mechanical characteristics and the microstructure. An experimental program has been undertaken to explore the effect of antimony on chosen mechanical properties and the microstructure of investigated alloy. An analysis of the results of these experimental works is made in order to determine an optimum Sb (Al-10% Sb) addition to produce material exhibiting desirable properties. Experimental works have showed that the addition of the Al-10% Sb results in similar or even higher mechanical properties than the conventional 319 alloy. Based on the carried out experiments the best combination of mechanical properties has been achieved by the addition of 2 000 ppm Al-10% Sb.

The microstructure was investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray system (EDS). The structure of the joints on the titanium side was composed of the eutectoid mixture αTi+Ti2Ni and layers of intermetallic phases Ti2Ni, TiNi and TiNi3. The stainless steel-nickel interface is free from any reaction layer at 850°C, above this temperature thin layer of reaction appears. The microhardness measured across the joints reaches higher values than for titanium and stainless steel, and it achieves value from 260 to 446 HV. The highest shear strength (214 MPa) was achieved for joints brazed at 900°C.

This paper presents the nanoindentation investigation of the evolution of concrete microstructure modified by the Internal Crystallization Technology mineral powders. The samples under study were retrieved from a fragment of a circular concrete lining of the vertical mine shaft at a depth of approximately 1,000 m. Due to the aggressive environment and exposure to contaminated water, the internal surface of the structure was deteriorated, decreasing its strength significantly. The mineral powders were applied directly on the surface lining. The specimens were investigated one month, three months and one year after the application of the aforementioned substance in order to verify the time dependence of the strengthening processes and durability of the crystalline phase. The microstructural changes of concrete were assessed with the use of nanoindentation technique. The testing procedure involved including the previously cut specimens in the epoxy resin and grinding and polishing in order to reduce the surface roughness. As a result of the nanoindentation tests the hardness as well as Young’s modulus of the material were evaluated. The results were then compared and statistically analyzed. As a consequence, the disintegration time of the crystalline network in the pores of concrete was identified.

One of the methods to prevent unsuitable lubrication of moving components of devices and machinery is using bi-metal and three-metal bearings. Centrifugal casting process is one of the manufacturing methods that is used for such bearings. In this study, the purpose is microstructure evaluation of the bonding location and length determination of diffusion bond in structural steel-bronze. A mold made of structural steel with inner diameter of 240mm, length of 300mm and thickness of 10mm was coated by a 6mm film of bronze under centrifugal casting process. At first, a bronze ingot with dimension of 5mm×10mm×20mm is located inside of the hollow cylindrical mold and then the two ends of it will be sealed. During mold rotation with the rate of 800 rpm, two high power flames are used for heating the mold under Ar gas atmosphere to melt the bronze ingot at 1000˚C. After 15minutes, the system is cooled rapidly. Results showed that the diffusion bonding of bronze in structural steel to depth of 1.2μm from the bonding line was obtained. In this bonding, copper element was diffused to 50% of its initial concentration.

Al-3 vol% CNT nanocomposites were processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature under the pressure in the range of 2.5-10 GPa for up to 10 turns. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the microstructural evolutions upon HPT. Mechanical properties of the HPT-processed disks were studied using tensile tests and microhardness measurements. The results show gradual evolutions in the density, microstructure, and hardness with increasing the number of turns and applied presure. Nanostructured and elongated Al grains with an average grain thickness of ~40 nm perpendicular to the compression axis of HPT and an aspect ratio of ~3 are formed after 10 turns under 6 GPa. Evaluating the mechanical properties of the 10-turn processed Al/CNT nanocomposites indicates a tensile strength of 321 MPa and a hardness of 122 Hv. The tensile fracture surface of the Al/CNT nanocomposite mostly demonstrates a smooth fracture manner with fine dimples resulting in a low tensile ductility of ~1.5%.

The article shows the effect of the increased carbon content on the microstructure and properties of two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Alloys with different carbon content (0.2 and 0.5 wt.%) were produced in vacuum induction furnace with cooper crucible. It was shown that the addition of carbon at the level of 0.2 wt.% increases hardness and strength properties, affects structural stability, results in grain refinement as well as improves creep and oxidation resistance. However, it has a negative effect on plastic deformation. Increasing the carbon content to the 0.5 wt.% causes the further improvement in the creep and oxidation resistance and microstructure refinement of the tested alloys, resulting also in decrease such properties as plasticity, hot deformability and in case of the susceptibility to cold plastic deformation to unacceptable level.

The milling of the powder mixture was carried out for 40 h. The structural and morphological analyses were performed by the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The melting temperature of the braze filler was determined by differential thermal analysis. The filler wetting properties were assessed from the spread area ratio measurements on various Ti substrates. The results indicate that the ball milling can effectively depress the filler melting point and enhance the brazeability. The milled powder mixture showed Ag(Cu) solid solution with a crystallite size of 174-68 nm after 40 h. It was shown that the high energy ball milling can be a potential method to develop low temperature brazing fillers for advanced microjoining applications.

The article presents the results of tests of plastic shaping of magnesium alloy Mg-Li. Magnesium alloy for an extrusion process was obtained with the method of vacuum smelting and casting into graphite moulds. The materials for tests were slabs cast from magnesium alloys with symbols: Mg-4%Li-1%Ca (LX41). Before the process of deformation the castings were subject to homogenization. Conventional extrusion tests were conducted in a complex state of deformation (KoBo method). An assessment was performed of the influence of the deformation process parameters on the structure and properties of the tested alloy. Results of mechanical tests were presented both for static compression test in room temperature. On the basis of the achieved tests results, the susceptibility to plastic working for the Mg-4%Li-1%Ca alloy was determined. An analysis of the microstructure was conducted both in the initial condition and after plastic deformation with the use of light and scanning microscopy techniques. The applied deformation methods allowed the determination of the influence of process parameters on changes in the microstructure and properties of the Mg-4%Li-1%Ca alloy.

Opis:
This paper presents results of the research on impact of microstructure of austenitic-ferritic steel of duplex type on its mechanical properties and susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. As showed, improper processing technologies more and more often used in shipbuilding industry for plates and other half-finished products made of duplex steel may cause significant lowering their properties, which frequently makes their replacing necessary. Results of the tests on stress corrosion under tension with low strain rate (SSRT) conducted in an inert and corrosion (boiling magnesium chloride) environment , are presented. It was proved that even minor structural transformations taking place in 500ºC ageing temperature lower corrosion resistance of the steel. Structural transformations occurring in 700ºC temperature to a smaller extent influence susceptibility to stress corrosion of the steel, however they cause drastic drop in its plasticity.

Opis:
In this study, mechanical properties and microstructures of extruded aluminum matrix composites were investigated. The composite materials were manufactured by two step methods: powder metallurgy (mixture of aluminum powder and carbon fiber using a turbular mixer, pressing of mixed aluminum powder and carbon fiber using a cold isostatic pressing) and hot extrusion of pressed aluminum powder and carbon fiber. For the mixing of Al powder and carbon fibers, aluminum powder was used as a powder with an average particle size of 30 micrometer and the addition of the carbon fibers was 50% of volume. In order to make mixing easier, it was mixed under an optimal condition of turbular mixer with a rotational speed of 60 rpm and time of 1800s. The process of the hot-extrusion was heated at 450°C for 1 hour. Then, it was hot-extruded with a condition of extrusion ratio of 19 and ram speed of 2 mm/s. The microstructural analysis of extruded aluminum matrix composites bars and semi-solid casted alloys were carried out with the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. Its mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers hardness and tensile test.

Opis:
The article presents tests results of metalforming of magnesium alloy AZ61. Materials for tests were ingots sized ϕ 40×90 mm from magnesium alloy marked with symbol AZ61. Before the shaping process the ingots underwent heat treatment. As a result of conduction of the deformation processes there were rods achieved with diameter of 8 mm. There were axisymmetrical compression tests conducted on the samples taken from rods in temperature range from RT to 350ºC in order to determine the plasticity and formability of the alloy AZ61. Static tensile test was conducted in room temperature (RT), in 300ºC and in 350ºC. With the use of light and electron microscopy techniques the changes which occurred in the microstructure of AZ61 alloy in initial condition and after plastic deformation (classic extrusion, KoBo method extrusion) were described. The deformation of alloy AZ61 using the KoBo method contributes to an increase in strength and plastic properties. The effect of superplastic flow was found at a temperature of 350ºC, where a 300% increase in plastic properties – elongation value was obtained. The analysis of the microstructure showed a significant grain size reduction in the microstructure of alloy AZ61 after deformation by the KoBo method and after anaxisymmetric compression test, where grains of an average diameter of d = 13 μm were obtained.

The paper presents the analysis of the three-dimensional strain state for the cogging process of a forging (type: shaft) of the X6CrNiTi18-10 austenitic steel with the application of the finite element method. The results of the thermal-mechanical simulation of the hot cogging process on flat and shaped anvils, taking under consideration boundary conditions applied in industrial practice, are presented. In the research, a new method of forging, consisting in the introduction of the initial forging of the stock on anvils which have convex work surfaces, and further forging on shaped anvils, was applied. The results of the calculations make it possible to determine effective strain distribution, effective stress, mean stresses and temperature in the volume of a forging. The solution was supplemented by the addition of the model of microstructure development in the course of deformation. The conducted research constitutes the basis for determining the best possible technological process of the initial forging of a cast ingot, and provide the possibility of forecasting the deformations and parameters of the microstructure.

Observations of refined microstructure of Commercial Purity titanium for applications in biomedical devices has been carried out. Refinement of titanium microstructure has been performed in process with complex strain scheme. Materials investigated in this work were: Commercial Purity titanium grade 2 and grade 4. Samples of as received materials were subjected to plastic deformation in complex loading process of extrusion combined with oscillation twisting (KoBo extrusion). Both types of samples were deformed in single step of extrusion, in temperature of 450 °C, with extrusion ratio 19.14 and 12.25 for grade 2 titanium and grade 4 titanium, respectively. Initial mean grain diameter for both types of materials was approximately 30 μm. Samples were investigated by means of crystal orientation microscopy. In both cases considerable microstructure refinement has been observed. Microstructures of deformed samples are heterogenous and consist of both elongated and fine equiaxed grains. Elongated grains (lamellae) are separated by High Angle Grain Boundaries and feature internal structure with subgrains and dislocation walls. Grain refinement is stronger in material with higher extrusion ratio and mean grain diameter in this case is equal to 1.48 μm compared to 8.07 μm. in material with lower extrusion ratio. Mean misorientation angle (24° and 27° for grade 4 and grade 2 titanium) indicates high fraction of HAGBs in microstructures of KoBo deformed samples. Misorientation fluctuations inside grains have been analyzed and distinct curvature of crystal lattice have been observed. Hardness of samples after plastic deformation increased from 174.6±3.4 and 234.9±3.5 to 205.0±3.2 and 251.2±2.2 for titanium grade 2 and grade 4 respectively.

The aim of this work was to obtain composite of nc-TiO2/Ni coatings on 316L steel and to characterize their corrosion resistance. In order to investigate the influence of the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles, both pure Ni and composite nc-TiO2/Ni coatings were electrodeposited from nickel citrate baths. The microstructure of the coatings was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The nc-TiO2/Ni coatings were about 10 μm thick. Their microstructure consisted of TiO2 nanoparticles uniformly distributed in nanocrystalline Ni matrix. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using impedance spectroscopy and polarization curves techniques in Ringer’s solution. It was determined that the addition of nano-TiO2 particles improved corrosion resistance and reduced corrosion rate of the coated steel.

The article characterizes microstructures of metallurgic slag of varying age remaining from the production of iron and steel and the Zn-Pb ore processing in relation to magmatic rocks and ores. Based on microscopic observations - among others - hypocrystalline, hyaline and felsite (characteristic for magmatic rocks) microstructures were observed in the slag. Also microstructures related to ores, including framework and dendritic, colomorphic and corrosive structures were noted. The diversity of the microstructures presented in the article is a result of the differentiation in the formations of individual components of the slags, which depends, inter alia, on the method and the rate of cooling of the alloys.

We present results of the first studies of the bone microstructure of early mammals, based on the Early Jurassic Morganucodon, the Late Cretaceous multituberculates, Kryptobaatar and Nemegtbaatar, and the Late Cretaceous eutherians Zalambdalestes and Barunlestes. Our results show that the two eutherian taxa grew relatively slowly with periodic pauses in growth indicated by the presence of rest lines, while the multituberculates and Morganucodon had a faster rate of bone formation that suggests an overall rapid growth rate that slowed down later in ontogeny. Comparisons of the early mammalian bone microstructure with that of non−mammalian cynodonts, extant monotremes, and placentals are also made, and significant differences in the rate of osteogenesis in the various groups are documented. Our findings suggest differences in the growth rate between the multituberculates and the Mesozoic eutherians, and moreover, both groups appear to have slower growth rates as compared to modern monotremes and placentals. Our results further suggest that the determinate growth strategy typical of extant mammals evolved early in the evolution of the non−mammalian therapsids. We speculate that the sustained, uninterrupted bone formation among the multituberculates may have been an adaptive attribute prior to the K−T event, but that the flexible growth strategy of the early eutherians was more advantageous thereafter.

We focus on the properties of duration on both markets and on fitting the appropriate ACD models. Because of the quite different levels of capitalization of stocks on these markets, we observe essential discrepancies between these stocks. While for most German companies on the DAX30, the Burr distribution fits better than generalized gamma distribution, the latter distribution is superior in the case of the largest Polish companies. Analyzing series by hazard function, we note the similarity of hazard functions for companies on both markets, which tend to have a U-shaped pattern.

Creep and fatigue properties of two-phase titanium alloys show strong dependence on microstructure, especially morphology of the α and β phases which can be controlled to certain extent by proper selection of hot working and heat treatment conditions. In the paper the creep behaviour of Ti-6Al-2Mo-2Cr alloy (VT3-1) at elevated temperature was modelled. Finite element analyses of primary creep stage were carried out taking into account some microstructural features of the two-phase alloy that were included in the physical model and different properties of α and β phases. In order to verify results of calculations distinct types of microstructure were developed in the alloy by heat treatment and creep tests were carried out at elevated temperature (450°C) at various stress levels. Based on the FEM simulations the effect of changes of some microstructure features on primary creep strain development was estimated.

The capabilities of different constitutive equations of approximating the tensile flow curves and correlating plastic behavior with the microstructure were investigated in austempered ductile iron ADI 1050. In a previous paper, the microstructure evolution of ADI 1050 during austempering was investigated through quenching the ADI 1050 after 14 increasing austempering times to room temperature. The 14 samples were tensile tested and two classes of constitutive equations were examined in the present paper. The Hollomon-type constitutive equations approximated all of the tensile flow curves of ADI 1050 very well but failed in correlating the plastic behavior with microstructure evolution. Voce-type constitutive equations approximated the tensile flow curves only at high stresses very well but could correlate the plastic behavior with the microstructure evolution of ADI 1050 during austempering excellently. The reason of this success was rationalized in terms of the physical basis of Voce-type equations, while Hollomon-type equations are empirical.

Opis:
In Poland, researchers have a very strong interest in archaeometallurgy, which, as presented in classical works, focuses on dating artefacts from the prehistoric and early medieval periods in the form of cast iron and copper castings. This study, extending the current knowledge, presents the results of a microstructure investigation into the findings from the Modern era dating back to the late Middle Ages. The investigated material was an object in the form of a heavy solid copper block weighing several kilograms that was excavated by a team of Polish archaeologists working under the direction of Ms Iwona Młodkowska-Przepiórowska during works on the marketplace in the city of Czestochowa during the summer of 2009. Pre-dating of the material indicates the period of the seventeenth century AD. The solid copper block was delivered in the form of a part shaped like a bell, named later in this work as a “kettlebell”. To determine the microstructure, the structural components, chemical composition, and homogeneity, as well as additives and impurities, investigations were carried out using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy including analysis of the chemical composition performed in micro-areas, and qualitative X-ray phase analysis in order to investigate the phase composition. Interpretation of the analytical results of the material’s microstructure will also help modify and/or develop new methodological assumptions to investigate further archaeometallurgical exhibits, throwing new light on and expanding the area of knowledge of the use and processing of seventeenth-century metallic materials.

The article presents the results of analysis of the chemical composition, hardness, microstructure and toughness of selected structural materials. The focus is on the results of impact tests carried out on the 40H steel quenched and tempered at three different temperatures, on grey cast iron used in industrial practice (cast material for brake drums) and on ADI, all of them being considered representatives of the group of materials commonly used in the production of structural elements and finished products, including items for use in the automotive industry. The impact tests were performed at a reduced temperature (-20°C), at room temperature (20°C) and at elevated temperature (150°C), comparing the results obtained with the microstructure of materials tested. It has been shown that in the case of steel, the smallest changes in microstructure cause changes in toughness, while the effect of tempering temperature is in this case of secondary importance. It was also proved that under the conditions of ambient temperature and reduced temperature, better results were obtained for ADI. At elevated temperature, better results were obtained for grey iron castings.

Opis:
This study aimed to prepare Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk amorphous alloys by spark plasma sintering of raw amorphous alloy powders and investigate their microstructure and micromechanical behaviors. When the sintering temperature (Ts) was 675K, which was lower than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the material, the sintered sample was almost fully amorphous but the density was lower. However, when Ts was 705K, which was higher than Tg, partial crystallization occurred, but the density was higher. The hardness of the bonding zone of the sintered sample at 675K was 5.291 GPa due to the lower density, which was lower than that at 705K, and the hardness at 705K was 8.836 GPa. The generation of thermodynamically stable intermetallic phases, the hardness, and the elastic modulus of the samples sintered above Tg were higher due to the higher density.

In this paper, the microstructure of laser beam welded Sc-modified AA2519-F has been taken under investigation. The welded joint has been produced using Fanuc 710i industrial robot equipped with YLS-6000 6 kW laser beam source. The welding speed and laser power were equal to 0.75 m/min and 3.2 kW, respectively. The investigation involved microstructure observations with the use of both light microscope and scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of chemical composition and microhardness distribution measurements. It has been stated that laser beam welding allows to obtain Sc-modified AA2519-F weld of good quality, characterized by the presence of an equiaxed grain zone containing scandium-rich precipitates adjacent to the fusion boundary.

Opis:
The microstructure evolution of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials after casting and tempering was investigated. The results indicate that as-cast boron-bearing high speed steel consists of martensitic matrix, retained austenite and different borocarbides. The as-cast alloy has a hardness above 64 HRC, and the borocarbides distribute along the grain boundaries. After RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment, obvious necking and broken network appear in the grain boundaries. The hardness of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials reduces gradually with the increase of tempering temperature. Under the same conditions, the toughness of the modified roll material is higher than that of the unmodified roll material. Wear tests show that the wear resistance of boron-bearing high-speed steel modified by RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment is better.

Opis:
In the present work, rapidly solidified Al-10Ni-XSc (X = 0, 1 and 2) alloys were fabricated by melt spinning under Ar atmosphere. The Effects of Sc on the microstructural and thermal properties and microhardness values were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and a Vickers microhardness tester. Experimental results revealed that the addition of 2 wt. % Sc to melt-spun Al-10Ni alloys changed their brittle nature and hindered formation of cracks. The addition of Sc to melt-spun Al-10Ni alloys also changed the morphology of Al3 Ni intermetallics from an acicular/needle – like to a rounded particle-like structure and led to reduction in their size. Formation of the metastable Al9 Ni2 phase was observed due to the higher constitutional undercooling caused by Sc addition. A considerable improvement in microhardness value (from 95. 9 to 230. 1 HV) was observed with the addition of Sc.

Opis:
The present study attempts to apply HE to 99.99% pure copper. The microstructure of the samples was investigated by both light microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Additionally, the microhardness was measured, the tensile test was made, and statistical analysis of the grains and subgrains was performed. Based on Kikuchi diffraction patterns, misorientation was determined. The obtained results show that microstructure of copper deformed by hydrostatic extrusion (HE) is rather inhomogeneous. The regions strongly deformed with high dislocation density exist near cells and grains/subgrains free of dislocations. The measurements of the grain size have revealed that the sample with an initial in annealed-state grain size of about 250 μm had this grain size reduced to below 0.35μm when it was deformed by HE to the strain ε=2.91. The microhardness and UTS are stable within the whole investigated range of deformation.

Opis:
It is well known that the properties of a metal matrix composites depend upon the properties of the reinforcement phase, of the matrix and of the interface. A strong interface bonding without any degradation of the reinforcing phase is one of the prime objectives in the development of the metal matrix composites. Therefore, the objective of this work is to characterize the interface structure of WE43/SiC particles composite. Magnesium alloys containing yttrium and neodymium are known to have high specific strength, good creep and corrosion resistance up to 250°C. The addition of SiC ceramic particles strengthens the metal matrix composite resulting in better wear and creep resistance while maintaining good machinability. In the present study, WE43 magnesium matrix composite reinforced with SiC particulates was fabricated by stir casting. The SiC particles with 15 μm, 45 μm and 250 μm diameter were added to the WE43 alloy. The microstructure of the composite was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy and XRD analysis. YSi and Y2Si reaction products are observed at the interfaces between SiC particles and WE43 matrix in the composite stirred at 780°C. Microstructure characterization of WE43 MMC with the 45 μm, stirred at 720°C showed relative uniform reinforcement distribution. Moreover, the Zr-rich particles at particle/matrix interface were visible instead of Y-Si phases. In the case of composite with 15 μm particles the numerous agglomerates and reaction products between SiC particles and alloying elements were observed. The presence of SiC particles assisted in improving hardness and decreasing the tensile strength and plastic properties.

Opis:
The work focuses on developing the complex digital shadow of the metallic material microstructure that can predict its evolution during metal forming operations. Therefore, such a digital shadow has to consider all major physical mechanisms influencing the particular investigated phenomenon. The motivation for the work is directly related to the development of modern metallic materials, often of multiphase nature. Such microstructure types lead to local heterogeneities influencing material behaviour and eventually macroscopic properties of the final product. The concept of the digital material shadow, stages of the model development, and examples of practical applications to simulation of microstructure evolution are presented within the work. Capturing local heterogeneities that have a physical origin and eliminating numerical artefacts is particularly addressed. Obtained results demonstrate the capabilities of such a digital microstructure shadow approach in the numerical design of final product properties.

The technical condition of gas turbine blades of the turbine engine has a significant impact on the reliability and life span of the turbine and the entire engine. In order to assess the blades’ technical condition, a visual method, with the use of optoelectronic devices, is used. In order to verify this assessment, metallographic tests are conducted. The paper presents the results of microstructural tests of the turbine rotor blades made of nickel-based monocrystalline super alloys. The aim of these tests was to determine the consequences of impacting high exhaust gas temperature and stresses occurring during operation on the stability of the blade microstructure. The progress level of the blade microstructure changes in the post-operational stage for different sections towards the blade vertical axis and was compared with the blade microstructure on delivery made of the same super alloy. A varied degree of the microstructure degradation for different blade sections was shown. The changes typical of the high-temperature creep process – γ' phase directional growth (rafting), were observed only for the thinnest walls of the upper section of the turbine blade leaf.

In the present study, the effect of tool rotational speed on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints between commercially pure copper and 6351 Al alloy was carried out in the range of tool rotational speeds of 300-900 rpm in steps of 150 rpm at 30 mm/minutes travel speed. Up to 450 rpm, the interface of the joints is free from intermetallics and Al4 Cu9 intermetallic has been observed at the stir zone. However, Al4 Cu9 intermetallic was observed both at the interface and the stir zone at 600 rpm. At 750 and 900 rpm tool rotational speed, the layers of AlCu, Al2 Cu3 and Al4 Cu9 intermetallics were observed at the interface and only Al4 Cu9 intermetallics has been observed in the stir zone. The maximum ultimate tensile strength of ~207 MPa and yield strength of ~168 MPa along with ~6.2% elongation at fracture of the joint have been obtained when processed at 450 rpm tool rotational speed.

In this study, microstructure, mechanical, corrosion and corrosive wear properties of Mg-xAg the as-cast and extruded alloys (x: 1, 3 and 5 wt.%Ag) were investigated. According to the experimental results, as the amount of Ag added in the casting alloys increases, the secondary phases (Mg4Ag, Mg54Ag17) emerging in the structure have become more clarified. Furthermore, it was observed that as the amount of Ag increased, the grain size decreased and thus the mechanical properties of the alloys increased. Similarly, the extrusion process enabled the grains to be refined and the mechanical properties to be increased. As a result of the in vitro tests performed, the Mg-1Ag exhibited very bad corrosion properties compared to other alloys. On the other hand, according to corrosive wear tests results, a high wear rate and friction coefficient were found for Mg-5Ag alloys.

Opis:
This article deals with the effect of manganese that is the most applied element to eliminate the negative effect of iron in the investigated alloy AlSi7Mg0.3. In this time are several methods that are used for elimination harmful effect of iron. The most used method is elimination by applying the additive elements, so-called iron correctors. The influence of manganese on the morphology of excluded iron-based intermetallic phases was analysed at various iron contents (0.4; 0.8 and 1.2 wt. %). The effect of manganese was assessed in additions of 0.1; 0.2; 0.4 and 0.6 wt. % Mn. The morphology of iron intermetallic phases was assessed using electron microscopy (SEM) and EDX analysis. The increase of iron content in investigated alloys caused the formation of more intermetallic phases and this effect has been more significant with higher concentrations of manganese. The measurements carried out also showed that alloys with the same Mn/Fe ratio can manifest different structures and characteristics of excluded iron-based intermetallic phases, which might, at the same time, be related to different resulting mechanical properties.

The most important feature of bells is their sound. Their clarity and beauty depend, first of all, on the bell’s geometry - particularly the shape of its profile and the mechanical properties of alloy. Bells are the castings that work by emitting sound in as-cast state. Therefore all features that are created during melting, pouring, solidification and cooling processes will influence the bell's sound. The mechanical properties of bronze depend on the quality of alloy and microstructure which is created during solidification and depend on its kinetics. Hence, if the solidification parameters influence the alloy’s properties, how could they influence the frequencies of bell`s tone? Taking into account alterable thickness of bell's wall and differences in microstructure, the alloy's properties in bell could be important. In the article authors present the investigations conducted to determine the influence of cooling kinetics on microstructure of bronze with 20 weight % tin contents.

S. longissimus is more common than S. kukersianus and has a range from early Sandbian to middle Katian. Sphenothallus had a wide paleo-biogeographic distribution in the Late Ordovician. The tubes of Sphenothallus are composed of lamellae with a homogeneous microstructure. The homogeneous microstructure could represent a diagenetic fabric, based on the similarity to diagenetic structures in Torellella (Cnidaria?, Hyolithelminthes). Tubes of Sphenothallus have an apatitic composition, but one tube contains lamellae of diagenetic calcite within the apatitic structure. Sphenothallus presumably had originally biomineralized apatitic tubes. Different lattice parameters of the apatite indicate that biomineralization systems of phosphatic cnidarians Sphenothallus and Conularia sp. may have been different.

Opis:
The results of tests and examinations of the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast steel used for large-size slag ladles are presented. Castings of this type (especially large-size ladles with a capacity of up to 16 m3) operate under very demanding conditions resulting from the repeated cycles of filling and emptying the ladle with liquid slag at a temperature exceeding even 1600°C. The changes in operating temperature cause faster degradation and wear of slag ladle castings, mainly due to thermal fatigue. The tests carried out on samples taken from different parts/areas of the ladle (flange, bottom and half-height) showed significant differences in the microstructure of the flange and bottom part as compared to the microstructure obtained at half-height of the ladle wall. The flange and bottom were characterized by a ferritic-pearlitic microstructure, while the microstructure at the ladle half-height consisted of a ferritic matrix, cementite and graphite precipitates. Changes in microstructure affected the mechanical properties. Based on the test results it was found that both the flange and the bottom of the ladle had higher mechanical properties, i.e. UTS, YS, hardness, and impact energy than the centre of the ladle wall. Fractography showed the mixed character of fractures with the predominance of brittle fracture. Microporosity and clusters of non-metallic inclusions were also found in the fractures of samples characterized by low properties.

Opis:
The article presents the results of fatigue life tests and microstructure examinations of A359 alloy matrix composites (F3S.10S and F3S.30S) containing 10 and 30wt% of SiC particles, subjected to multiple remelting by conventional gravity casting. Mechanical characteristics were determined in a modified low cycle fatigue (MLCF) test, enabling rapid estimation of fatigue life and other mechanical parameters in practice of any material. Qualitative and quantitative metallographic examinations were also carried out. The quantitative evaluation of microstructure was performed by computer image analysis. A set of geometrical parameters of the reinforcing particles, pores and eutectic precipitates present in the metal matrix was determined. The relationships between the mechanical parameters, structural characteristics and the number of remelting operations were presented. It was found that up to the fourth remelting, the mechanical characteristics, including fatigue life, are slightly deteriorated but decrease gradually in the subsequent operations of remelting. The observed effect is mainly due to the shrinkage porosity occurring as a result of gravity casting. To eliminate this defect, the use of squeeze casting process was recommended. It has also been shown that multiple remelting can be an easy and economically well-founded alternative to other more expensive recycling methods.

Opis:
In the present paper, the effects of the subsequent extrusion after multi-pass equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) process on the mechanical properties and microstructure of WE43 magnesium alloy are investigated. First, second and fourth passes ECAP followed by an extrusion process are applied on WE43 magnesium alloy to refine the microstructure and to improve the mechanical properties for biomedical applications. The results showed that among the ECAPed samples, the highest and lowest strength were obtained in the second and the first pass processed samples, respectively. The four passes processed sample showe d the highest elongation to failure with moderate strength. The sample processed via first pass ECAP followed by extrusion exhibi ts an excellent combination of ductility and strength. The highest strength was obtained in the sample processed via the second pa ss ECAP followed by extrusion while the highest elongation was achieved in the sample processed via fourth pass ECAP followed by extrusion. Moreover, Vickers micro-indentation tests demonstrate that hardness is enhanced by an increase in the number of ECAP passes. Furthermore, a grain refinement process is presented for ECAP processing of WE43 alloy which shows a good agreement with microstructural investigations.

Opis:
In this paper, effects of preheating and type of electrode (E8010 and E8018) on microstructure and mechanical properties of 5L X70 steel welded joints were investigated. The microstructure of joint zone and fracture surface was analyzed by light optical microscope and scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Hardness mapping and tensile test were also performed to find the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. The results showed a consistency between the hardness variation data and the microstructure of joint zone. Moreover, hardness mapping revealed coarse and fine grain subregions in the heat affected zone which were not detected in the micrographs. The tensile test indicated that the non-preheated sample, welded by cellulosic E8010, had the minimum value in the strength and the ductility of welded steel. The fractography also determined that size and distribution of strengthening phases affected the fracture mode of welded specimens.
