Opis:
Introduction. A large-scale research was performed concerning issues relating to physical activity as an important factor in a healthy lifestyle and involved observing the differences among males and females as future elites of the Ukraine. Objective. The objective of the research is to assess the physical activity of students from the Ukraine, considering such factors as: gender, leisure time, time spent sitting, sports performed or intended to be performed, and the BMI. Materials and method. The extended version of the IPAQ, supplemented with 3 original questions by the authors, was applied to a 2,125-strong student group from 12 majors of the University of Luck, Ukraine. Results. Students from Ukraine portrayed a positive picture of physical activity with significantly higher values in male students of both total activity and its fields, i.e. sports activity and work (studying). The male students performed better in their fitness (condition) self-assessment and the amount of time spent sitting, whereas the female students had better BMI results. Both genders differed considerably in their choice of sport-recreational activities. Conclusions. Females more than males demonstrated lower indices of participation in physical activity, which did not permit the formulation of a positive assessment of their lifestyle. A positive phenomenon is the normal BMI and trace values of overweight in women, exactly the reverse to males.

Opis:
As indicated by the WHO, lifestyle plays a unique role in human health, which in turn is determined to a great extent by physical activity and nutrition. It must be borne in mind that physical activity should be systematic and regulated by an age-appropriate exercise intensity. All this indicates that learning about students’ lifestyle, with a particular focus on physical activity is vital as it these young people who aspire to the role of the future elites. Objective. The aim of the study is to evaluate the level of physical activity, nutrition- and silhouette-related behaviours of male and female students to assess the relationships between these variables in students from the Visegrad Group countries. Materials and method. The study was conducted in 2015 and involved 2,497 students attending three undergraduate levels aged – x – 21,76, (SD-1,80) – 1,211 males (48.5%) and 1,286 females (51.5%). The IPAQ long-form and a questionnaire by the Polish Chief Sanitary Inspector were used. Results. Physical activity was significantly higher in male than female students. An important relationship was observed among the larger number of consumed meals, level of physical activity, and silhouette-related behaviours in male students, which was not the case with females. However, there was an important correlation between physical activity in males and females who exercised to increase or decrease body weight (musculature), and took medications to increase body weight (musculature). Conclusion. Both males and females showed pro-health attitudes related to the level of physical activity and nutrition- and silhouette-related behaviours.

Opis:
Women’s underrepresentation in strictly technical fields of study closely linked to mathematics is a universal phenomenon, registered not only in Poland. Conclusions from numerous educational reports are worldwide as well – it is girls who preponderate over boys in math grades at every stage of education. Furthermore, in Polish conditions, the results of external exams are not significantly diversified by gender. Thus, the consequences of different evaluation systems do not explicate the so-called „women gender gap” in terms of women academic and vocational choices. In Poland, for a few years there has been attempts to counteract the prevailing trend through „The Girls for Engineers” programme or systems of scholarships for female students of technical and scientific studies. Such activities are claimed to be legitimate, though still insufficient, because they focus on diminishing the symptoms of the phenomenon, regardless of its exact causes. The explanation proposed in the article refers to the effects of stereotype that „maths is a domain for males”. It has been assumed that such stereotype has an adverse impact on the perception of one’s competences of stigmatized people – i.e. girls. Such facet of analysis has not been adopted in Polish educational research so far. Theoretical background of own research constitute self-efficacy theory by Albert Bandura, which emphasizes cultural context of its formation process. The obtained results indicate that gender is a significant factor contributing to the sense of efficacy formed on the basis of specific achievements in mathematics. It indicates that a typical female student – in relation to similarly assessed typical male student – registers lower trust to her own mathematical competences. Discussion depicted the way in which unfavourable self-perception corresponds to motivation for learning mathematics and consequently to educational choices. The direction for further research has been indicated.

The study was conducted using the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the aim of this research is to determine the level of physical activity and differences among students, of the University of Tuzla, in relation to gender. The study was conducted on a sample of 813 students (321 male and 492 female) 1st cycle of studies at the University of Tuzla. The results of present study showed that average level of total physical activity for male students was 6,013.493 MET-minutes/week, while female students showed average level of total physical activity was 4,619.381 MET-minutes/ week. We conclude that the total data indicates that in this group of students the physical activity level is sufficient and that there is a lower physical activity among females than males. Also there is a need to continuously take measures for promoting the sports at Universities with the aim of raising the health status of students to a higher level.

Adequate nutrition is one of the most important factors of a good state of health. The objective of the study was recognition of the mode of nutrition and behaviours related with concern about silhouette among students from the Ukraine. Materials and Method. The study was conducted in 2013 among 2,125 students, including 1,291 females and 834 males, from 12 study specialties at the National University in Lutsk. The method of a diagnostic survey was applied with the use of a questionnaire. The study showed significant differences in the regularity of consumption of meals to the benefit of males. Females, in their behaviours, more frequently avoided eating, felt fear of gaining weight, and lost control over eating. With respect to behaviours related with concern about silhouette, females significantly more often applied exercises in order to reduce body weight, while males in order to gain body weight. A positive behaviour in both sexes was a trace application of drugs and other pharmacological means to improve own silhouette.

Opis:
University education is a period of human life when lifestyles or person’s activity are critical to the development of somatic build, while identification of the somatotype allows for corrections or recommendation of effective physical activity programmes. The main aim of this study was to assess selected features of body build and to identify somatotypes of young people at early stages of education at Jozef Pilsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw depending on the field of study. The study examined 394 students of physical education (PE) and sport (S). Anthropometric measurements were the main research method used in the study. Physical body build (somatotype) was identified using the Heath-Carter method. The ANOVA/MANOVA analysis of variance was employed to determine the significance of differences in values of anthropometric and somatic characteristics between the groups of students. Students of physical education were characterized by a somatotype with a code of 3.08-4.6-2.62 (endomorphic mesomorph). In students of sport, the somatotype code was 3.0-4.58-2.37 (endomorphic mesomorph). Compared to S students, significantly (p < 0.05) higher values (by 10.5%) of the ectomorphy component were found in PE students. The results revealed the need for more research into the somatic build of students of physical education, taking into account the changes in their living conditions (including socio-economic environment), since graduates are expected to promote physical activity in the future. It is also necessary to carry out identical research at the end of studies in order to evaluate the effect of university curricula on the somatic build of students.

The idea of this study is based on the analysis and interpretation of the descriptions of adult men and women, submitted by students. We work on the assumption that the task of describing man and woman activates criteria used by people in the construction of both their identity and identity of others; as these criteria are not essential, but socially constructed, the acquired data may be an indicator of cultural pressures promoting specific patterns of femininity and masculinity among the students. Understanding just such patterns was our goal.

In the former classifications of compliment responses next to acceptance and rejection of a compliment there appears a special group of responses, also known as the self-praise avoidance mechanism (Pomerantz 1978), deflect/evade (Holmes 1988), deflating, deflecting, rejecting (Herbert/Straight 1989) or amendment strategies (Yu 2003). The last one of the above-mentioned groups combines the elements of acceptance and rejection and serves to restore the balance in a conversation and to save the face of the complimenter and of the complimented person. The analysis focuses on the last-mentioned group of responses. The main aim of this article is to show some chosen examples of the strategies used by Polish and German male and female students. The differences related to the culture and sex of the surveyed students will be discussed.

Materiał stanowią wyniki badań 168 studentów i 74 studentek I roku wychowania fizycznego uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego przeprowadzonych w latach 2010-2012. Techniką martinowską wykonano 26 pomiarów somatometrycznych (odcinki długościowe i szerokościowe ciała, obwody, fałdy skórno-tłuszczowe), na podstawie których wyliczono 12 wskaźników proporcji ciała. Strukturę somatyczną badanych zespołów męskich określono typologią Adama Wankego, a żeńskich Ewy Kolasy. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy wysunięto następujące stwierdzenia: 1.Zespoły studentów i studentek I roku wychowania fizycznego Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego zamieszkujące środowisko miejskie w porównaniu do wiejskiego charakteryzuje wyższy poziom rozwoju fizycznego. Różnice statystycznie istotne między porównywanymi zespołami męskimi odnotowano w wysokości ciała, grubości podściółki tłuszczowej na ramieniu i pod dolnym kątem łopatki, sumie grubości 5 fałdów skórno-tłuszczowych i szerokościach nasad kostnych (nadgarstkowej i łokciowej. W przypadku zespołów kobiet, czynnik urbanizacyjny nie różnicuje statystycznie istotnie cech somatycznych. 2.Studentów pochodzących z miast relatywnie do rówieśników ze środowisk wiejskich charakteryzują istotnie wyższe przeciętne wskaźników Rohrera, biodrowo-wzrostowego i BMI. W odniesieniu do zespołów kobiet, czynnik urbanizacyjny nie różnicuje statystycznie istotnie proporcji ciała. 3.W budowie ciała studentów Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego dominuje element leptosomiczny I, następnie A, natomiast u studentek elementy IV przy mniejszych udziałach AH. 4.Formuła somatyczna IAVH charakteryzuje zespół studentów Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego, a studentek IYAH. Studenci wychowania fizycznego UZ, elementami somatycznymi podobni są do studentów PWSZ w Koszalinie , natomiast studentki pierwszoplanowym elementem nawiązują do zespołów AWF w Gdańsku, Gorzowie Wielkopolskim i PWSZ w Koszalinie. 5. Budową ciała studenci z Zielonej Góry podobni są do rówieśników z WSI w Radomiu i Kolegium Karkonoskiego w Jeleniej Gorze, a studentki do studiujących AWF w Warszawie i AWF w Krakowie.
The aim of the paper is to present somatic and typological differentiation of the academic youth studying Physical Education at the University of Zielona Góra as well as the comparative characteristics with other universities in Poland. The material for the article is drawn from results of the research conducted in the years 2010-2012 on 168 male students and 74 female students of Physical Education, University of Zielona Góra. With the application of Martin’s technique, 26 somatometric measurements were performed (longitudinal and wide sections of the body, perimeters, skin/fat folds), on the basis of which the ratios of body proportions were calculated. The somatic structure of the surveyed male groups was determined by the typology of Adam Wanke, and the female ones – by the typology of Ewa Kolasa. The collected material was developed using basic statistical methods. Differentiation of the examined youth in the aspect of the size of environment they live in, as well as comparative characteristics of male and female students studying Physical Education in various academic centres in Poland were presented graphically and in tables. On the basis of performed analysis the following conclusions have been drawn: 1. The groups of first year male and female students of Physical Education, University of Zielona Góra, with urban backgrounds, are characterized by a higher level of physical development when compared to the students from rural areas. Statistically significant differences between the compared male groups were noted in the following aspects: height of the body, thickness of fatty panniculus on the shoulder and under the lower angle of the shoulder blade, sum of the thickness of 5 skin/fat folds and physeal width (of wrist and elbow). In the case of female groups, urbanization factor does not differentiate somatic features statistically significantly. 2. The male students with urban backgrounds are characterized by significantly higher average Roher rates, hip growth rates and BMI rates when compared to their peers from rural areas. As far as the examined women are concerned, the urbanization factor does not differentiate body proportions in a statistically significant way. 3. The male students’ body structure is dominated by a leptosomatic element I, then A; whereas an element IV is dominant in female students’ body structure with smaller proportions of AH. 4. Male students of University of Zielona Gora are characterized by a somatic formula IAVH, while the female students by IYAH. As far as somatic elements are concerned, the male students of Physical Education resemble the students of State Higher Vocational School in Koszalin; whereas in regard to the main element, female students might be compared to the teams from Universities of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk and Gorzow Wielkopolski, and from State Higher Vocational School in Koszalin. 5. When compared to other academic centres in Poland, the students of Physical Education, University of Zielona Gora resemble most the teams from Koszalin (male students) and Warsaw (female students) in terms of body height. In respect of body weight, the male students are like the teams from Łodź and Bydgoszcz, while the female students are like the teams from Warsaw and Gdańsk. As regards the body structure, the male students from Zielona Gora are similar to their peers from University of Technology and Humanities in Radom and Karkonosze College in Jelenia Gora, and the female students resemble their peers from Universities of Physical Education and Sport in Warsaw and Cracow.

Opis:
Background: Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was a sudden unknown stressor that could cause fear among people. Police officers were in the front lines, often unknowingly in direct contact with infected individuals, thus fear of getting infected (i.e., fear of COVID-19) could be higher in this population. Police students are preparing for the job of police officers and how they cope with a sudden unknown situation could be of importance for job performance and their mental health if such a situation occurs. This study aimed to investigate the association of perceived stress and coping strategies with fear of COVID-19 in police students. Material and Methods: Perceived stress scale-10, Brief COPE, and Fear of COVID-19 (FSV-19) were administered to 340 police students (female = 183 [53.82%] and male = 157 [46.18%]). Correlation analysis was applied to test the association between perceived stress, all dimension of coping and fear of COVID-19. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to investigate between-gender differences. For mediating and moderating effect of coping primary coping style were used. Results: MANOVA reviled that significant differences occurred in perceived stress, 3 primary coping styles and fear of COVID-19 based on a gender. Stepwise regression analysis extracted the most significant predictors of fear of COVID-19. Perceived stress was the strongest predictor in general and in both genders. Denial and self-distancing were significant coping subscales in males, while humour and denial were significant in females. Conclusions: Perceived stress and coping strategies that students used to deal with the situation moderately defined their fear of COVID-19 outbreak, with perceived stress being the strongest predictor.

Opis:
Introduction. Leisure may provide certain unique subjective well-being (SWB) benefits that cannot be obtained through other domains in life, as leisure is typically characterized by autonomy or greater freedom of choice than other life dimensions. The objective of the present study was to analyse the level of SWB in male and female high school students with different health status preferring sedentary leisure time activities and compare SWB dimensions (SWB-Ds) between healthy students and students with self-reported health disorders (S-RHDs). Material and Methods. The research sample comprised of 153 male students (healthy; n=90 and with S-RHDs; n=63) and 238 female students (healthy; n=126 and with S-RHDs; n=112) who preferred sedentary types of leisure time activities. A standardized The Bern Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire for Adolescents (BFW) was used as a primary research method. Non-parametric Mann Whitney U-test was used to assess differences between two independent groups of male and female high school students according to their self-reported health status (healthy vs. with S-RHDs). Results. Significantly higher level of negative SWB-Ds was found in the group of male students with S-RHDs compare healthy male students (U=1672, p=0.000, r=0.34). No significant differences were found in the comparison between healthy female students and female students with S-RHDs. Conclusions. Many researches indicate a very close positive connection between regular participation in sport leisure activities and SWB, but just few of them investigate correlations and comparisons among SWB, health status and sport leisure activities participation.
