Demographic changes point to the need to pay attention to the characteristics, needs and opportunities of people at old age. The article presents changes in verbal communication taking place as a result of physiological aging. It is written the transformation of speech due to changes in the structural and functional characteristics of this stage of life. It is also described a transformation in the field of programming language, using a dictionary specific phenomena of communication: OTV (Off Target Verbosity) and TOT (Tip-of-the Tongue) and attention is paid to intergenerational communication.

The aim of the study is to outline the role of language as the most effective tool of communication accessible to human beings in the context of international communication. Intercultural communication allows to indicate the diversity of intentions with which we enter into communicative relationships. It also highlights the need to take into account cultural difference in order to achieve understanding: the greater the extent to which diversity is taken into account and the greater the accompanying effort to reconstruct cultural beliefs, the higher the efficiency of communication.

The paper deals with the development of the gender concept and the way it is moving away from the notions of binary thinking. Its influence on the methods of linguistic analysis is taken into consideration. Different feminist ideologies – liberal, radical, socialist and cultural feminism as well as the feminism of power – are presented in the context of their view on women-men relations. Other ideologies that shape the idea of ‘doing gender’ are shown, too. All of them – postmodernism, identity politics and the globalization trend - come from outside linguistics. The binary classification is usually made automatically as an obvious and natural one. It is done against a strong tendency to underline the fuzziness of male-female boundaries in the philosophical speculations that are a starting point for the research in many disciplines.

Emotions are a fleeting experience, sometimes lasting only moments before dissipating. Prior research in SLA has either ignored emotions, underestimated their relevance, or has studied them as a relatively stable individual difference variable. In contrast, the present study takes an idiodynamic approach to examine the rapidly changing relationship between enjoyment and anxiety in second language communication, on a moment-to-moment timescale. University students who speak French as a second language were recruited to complete oral tasks in their second language. Participants then rated their per-second fluctuations in each emotion while watching a video recording of their tasks. Immediately after this, they were interviewed about their attributions for fluctuations in their ratings. We found that the relationship between enjoyment and anxiety is highly dynamic, resulting in varying patterns of correlation ranging from negative to positive. Triangulation of ratings of anxiety and enjoyment with interview data produces a richer understanding of the role of emotions in second language communication.

The paper discusses the intrinsic potential offered by classroom interaction for language development. The first part examines several theoretical aspects and characteristics of classroom communication. The second part presents the results of a study which investigates different aspects of classroom interaction in foreign language teaching and the strategies used to encourage classroom communication in the target language. The study, which combines quantitative and qualitative research methods, is based on a survey of Slovene teachers teaching English in primary school. Results suggest that while the respondents are well aware of the benefits of using English in classroom communication, they generally use it in an arbitrary and unsystematic fashion. We would like to argue that we can contribute to the effectiveness of the teaching process by approaching classroom communication with a systematic and consistent format.

Every transference of (foreign-)language information in the cybernetic sense is always closely linked with linguistic and extra-linguistic steering. The results of the effects of steering that take place in the receiver can be detected on the basis of the reverse-coupling structure, when the secondary sender transmits reproductive or productive information to the secondary receiver. The secondary receiver tests and possibly improves the correctness of the individual grammatical structures transmitted. The repeated coding and the repeated transference of the same or improved information, and the steering of that information, constitutes the substance of regulation. Both processes—steering and regulation—are brought under the same general term and are called control. Effective informational processes occur in foreign language communication simultaneously with their control. Correcting their results is carried out by means of regulation, further referred to as the steering, in which all processes are involved. In the scope of foreign language learning processes, where specific types of communication take place, the full decoding of the received information signals and the emergence of structure matrices in the storage mechanism are also discussed. At this point, it seems essential to point out a still unsolved problem of science: how does the memory assign the incoming speech signals to their substantive contents of consciousness (semantic structures). The higher powers of the human information processing system are certainly involved in this process.

Prezentowane refleksje są inspirowane pracami takich etyków, jak: Henryk Elzenberg, Stanisław Kamiński, Andrzej Grzegorczyk i Józef Jaroń.
The article has a theoretical and research character. It contains proposals for research on the basic issues of language communication ethics. The need to develop the ethics of linguistic communication is justified by two phenomena: the spread of hate speech, the crisis of values in the public debate. The study is a voice in the discussion on how to study the ethics of linguistic communication. The presented reflections are inspired by the work of such ethicists as Henryk Elzenberg, Stanisław Kamiński, Andrzej Grzegorczyk and Józef Jaroń.

Text se zabývá problematikou tzv. formálnosti a neformálnosti v jazykové komunikaci v češtině; cílem je objasnit tento v lingvistice frekventovaný, avšak nikoli jednoznačný koncept. Jsou představeny jeho základní aspekty, např. souvislost s pragmatickou stránkou komunikace, jazykovými a mimojazykovými normami, resp. některými stylovými dichotomiemi. Část textu je věnována i trendu odklánění se od formálnosti (a také od spisovnosti) v situacích dříve či doposud zásadně formálních; poněkud podrobněji popisujeme tento trend v oblasti komunikace mediální.
This article deals with the issue of so-called formality and informality in language communication in Czech; the aim is to clarify this frequent but not unambiguous concept. We comment some basic aspects of this concept, e. g. the connection with the pragmatic aspects of communication as well as with language and extra-lingual standards and other stylistic dichotomies. Part of the text follows up the current trend of deflection from formality (as well as from standard Czech) in situations previously or so far fundamentally formal; in more detail we describe this trend in media communication.

The studies were aimed at determining the level of functioning in the children with ADHD within language communication using the significant activity of the right cerebral hemisphere. In the context of the investigated language processes, the issues of ADHD children’s intellectual functioning and its correlation with the “right-hemispheric” language communication skills seem interesting. The participants of the studies were 30 boys with symptoms of ADHD and 30 healthy boys in 2 age groups: 8-11 and 12-14 years. The WISC-R was used to evaluate the examinees’ cognitive functioning and the Right Hemisphere Language Battery – RHLB-PL and a modified version of RHLB-PL with experimental trials adjusted to younger children, elaborated by the authors. The criterial and control groups did not differ significantly in the intelligence quotient values in the full, verbal and nonverbal scale of WISC-R, i.e. the main indicators of the cognitive skills level. However, three subtests of the Intelligence Scale differentiate between the group of children with ADHD and the group without ADHD. The children with ADHD find it more difficult to perform the tasks within the Arithmetic subtest and Mazes subtests, but they appear to do better with the Object Assembly subtest tasks. No differences were found between the subjects with ADHD and without the disorder in the measures of the “right-hemispheric” language functioningin both age groups. Moderate positive correlations were found between the IQ in the full, verbal and nonverbal scales and subtests of the WISC-R verbal scale and results of RHLB-PL.
Celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie poziomu funkcjonowania dzieci z ADHD w zakresie komunikacji językowej realizowanej z istotną aktywnością prawej półkuli mózgu. W kontekście badanych procesów językowych interesujące wydają się zagadnienie funkcjonowania intelektualnego dzieci z ADHD i jego współzależność z umiejętnościami „prawopółkulowej” komunikacji językowej. W badaniach wzięło udział 30 chłopców z objawami ADHD i 30 chłopców zdrowych, których podzielono na 2 grupy wiekowe: 8-11 i 12-14 lat. Zastosowano WISC-R w celu oceny funkcjonowania poznawczego osób badanych oraz Baterię Testów do Badania Funkcji Językowych i Komunikacyjnych Prawej Półkuli Mózgu – RHLB-PL oraz dostosowaną do dzieci młodszych zmodyfikowaną wersję RHLB-PL (w opracowaniu własnym) wraz z próbami eksperymentalnymi. Grupy kryterialna i kontrolna nie różniły się istotnie w wartościach ilorazu inteligencji w skali pełnej, słownej i bezsłownej WISC-R, czyli w głównych wskaźnikach poziomu zdolności poznawczych. Jednakże trzy podtesty Skali Inteligencji różnicują grupę dzieci z ADHD i grupę dzieci bez ADHD. Dzieci z ADHD gorzej radzą sobie z wykonywaniem zadań wchodzących w skład podtestu Arytmetyka i podtestu Labirynty, natomiast lepiej z wykonaniem zadań podtestu Układanki. Nie stwierdzono różnic pomiędzy badanymi z ADHD i bez zaburzenia w miarach „prawopółkulowego” funkcjonowania językowego w obu grupach wiekowych. Wykazano istnienie umiarkowanych korelacji dodatnich pomiędzy IQ w skali pełnej i słownej oraz podtestami skali słownej WISC-R a wynikami RHLB-PL.

The article describes a case of a patient with aphasia, diagnosed with symptomatic epilepsy seizures after aneurysm clipping. A speech therapy diagnosis was made, consisting of patient observation, analysis of clinical documentation and speech test results. The subject was diagnosed with disorders of linguistic competence and skills caused by the presence of acoustic-mnestic aphasia. Their consequences are dysfunctions in terms of communication and interaction skills and abilities.

Communication in an unequal relationship (lecturer – student) is conditioned by an official communicative situation. The interchange of information in such a communicative space (situation, place and time) requires the sender and the addressee of a message to use a definite code and to observe, among others, the rules of linguistic etiquette and verbal aesthetics. In unequal relationships, it is the lecturers who in their e-mails observe the rules of linguistic etiquette and aesthetics. Students, in turn, not always can adjust their utterances to a communicative situation and consequently their linguistic behaviours are considered as unsuitable and inadequate with regard to the addressee, the situation and the act of communication. A characteristic feature of students’ letters is the use of linguistic strategies characteristic for the spoken Polish (language) in unofficial situations, and also combining the norms of linguistic polite behaviours typical for an unequal relationship as well as equal relationship.

This paper presents the phenomenon of anticipation which is one of the manifestations of linguistic maturity and language user rationality. Anticipation, taking place essentially in implicit structures and based on evolutionary old intuition, improves speech comprehension and increases the efficiency of cognitive processes. The phenomenon in question is presented on the example of foreign language communication, because it is there that the mechanisms governing the formulation of accurate hypotheses about form and content are particularly evident. The first part of the article discusses speech perception, and with it the categorization and selection of an appropriate cognitive schema conditioning accurate anticipation. The second part presents factors that facilitate and hinder the right hypothesis. Finally, conclusions and directions for future research on anticipation are formulated.

The article discusses mechanisms of social immunisation in the context of the Polish ‘March 1968’. Whereas immunising strategies are a normal part of sociality, I argue that around 1968 a growing anxiety about the mechanisms of being-in-common led to an autoimmunitarian dissociation of the Polish society, which I conceptualise as an atmosphere of minusivity. Strategies to counter exclusions and discriminations were trapped in this immunitarian paradigm as well. A crisis of communication arose from the dissonance between the reality created by the official language surrounding March 1968, and the reality experienced by many people, as this latter reality was silenced and repressed. Mistrust in language resulted in an immunitarian retreat from affective communication, which was replaced by impersonal communicative scripts. This communicative crisis widely pre-vented the March experiences from being conveyed in the cul-tural production of the time; nonetheless, I will try to retrace some of the immunitarian and counter-immunitarian strategies in literature, film, and retrospective accounts.

The paper aims at discussing the problems of conceptual metalinguistic metaphorics, its influence on the way theoretical considerations is exercised in contemporary linguistic discourse, which results in the creation of specific models of language, communication and translation. The problem of metaphorical profiling discussed in the following considerations is approached from the perspective of contemporary linguistics, which makes it possible to see a peculiar confusion of “reality” and “cognitive” aspects in metalinguistic reflection. Undoubtedly, it is impossible to think and discuss the most abstract aspects of language outside the metaphorical framework. But should all metaphorical imagery, including the most “common sense” constructs, justify the theoretical modelling of language, communication or translation and set the course for a scientific cognitive approach to these categories? The metaphorical language of the researcher should be an element consistent with the theoretical assumptions that the researcher represents. This is because a metaphor is a reflection of a person’s way of thinking. A lack of congruence between expressions and the description of the declared views may result in a lack of credibility of the language theory. The conclusions presented in this paper will be subjected to further investigations.

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą usystematyzowania metod stosowanych w filmowym tłumaczeniu wulgaryzmów z języka angielskiego na język polski. Przedstawione metody zostały wyodrębnione w toku szeroko zakrojonego badania, którego celem był opis praktyk translatorskich w dobie przemian językowych i socjolingwistycznych związanych ze wzrostem częstotliwości stosowania jednostek nacechowanych wulgarnie nie tylko w codziennej komunikacji, ale również w filmie. W poniższym artykule zaprezentowano badania statystyczne dotyczące przemian w zakresie częstotliwości występowania wulgaryzmów w komunikacji w języku polskim i angielskim, ponieważ stanowią one podstawę do rozważań na tym, czy zmiany w języku wpływają na decyzje translatorskie w przypadku przekładu wulgaryzmów.
The article is an attempt at systematizing methods used in film translation of swearwords / (vulgarisms) from English into Polish. The methods presented in the study were arrived at through extensive research, which aimed at describing translation practices in the age of linguistic and sociolinguistic changes involving the increase in the frequency of usage of swearwords not only in every-day communication but also in film. The article presents quantitative research concerning the changes in the frequency of using vulgarisms in communication in Polish and English. The results constitute the basis for considering whether the changes a given language is undergoing can influence the translator’s decisions with regard to vulgarisms.

Wykorzystanie piosenki wspiera także rozwój innych funkcji, warunkujących rozwój mowy i języka. W niniejszym artykule zostały wskazane funkcje językowego, komunikacyjnego i poznawczego funkcjonowania dziecka, które mogą być rozwijane przez zastosowanie dziecięcej piosenki, zarówno podczas codziennych aktywności, jak i w czynnościach profilaktycznych czy terapeutycznych.
A song is a frequent form of the child’s musical activity. The child’s singing fulfills many important functions: it introduces him/her into the world of music, helps establish and maintain relationships with parents/caregivers and peers, acquaints the child with many thematic areas, helps understand different social phenomena, and improves the speech apparatus. The use of songs also supports the development of other functions determining the development of speech and language. The present paper shows the functions of the child’s language, communication and cognitive, functioning that can be developed by use of children’s songs, both during daily and prevention or therapy activities.

The present article analyses trigrams – words constructions that have properties of phrasemes. The studied trigrams have been excerpted from task-oriented dialogues (conducted between participants of a linguistic experiment). It turns out that phrasematic trigrams perform different communication and semantic functions: establishing and enhancing contact, feedback positive, “simple adverbiality” and “complex adverbiality”. The article is a follow-up to the author’s previous article on bi-grams: Bi-grams – Repetitive Two-word-structures in Task-oriented Dialogues.
