The paper discusses Shakespeare’s preoccupation with the Christian notions of divine love, forgiveness and justice in The Tragedy of King Lear. In my reading I employ Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenological reflection on the givenness of love and Hans-Urs von Balthasar’s theology of Paschal mystery. I take issue with the Marxist and existentialist interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragedy which prevailed in the second half of the $20^{th}$ century. My aim is not a simple recuperation of the “redemptionism” of the play, but an in-depth consideration of Christian allusions in the play which may tie love and forgiveness to justice and throw light on the ending of King Lear.

Opis:
The article takes up the theme of Agamben’s violence without a form of justice and reads Shakespeare’s tragedy as spanned between Cordelia’s “nothing” at the start of the play and Lear’s “never” at its end. It also approaches a question of the relationship between, in Rousseau’s word, “l’homme naturel” and “citoyen.” Lear’s push towards a position of being “unaccommodated” suggests a move away from the organization of life previously holding its rule over men towards a marginal, peripheral zone with uncertain rules where man has to risk his own decisions rather than merely follow the custom.

Opis:
King Lear exemplifies two cultures of feeling, the medieval and the early modern one. Even though the humoral theory lay at the heart of the medieval and the early modern understanding of emotions, there was a sudden change in the understanding of specific medieval emotions in Renaissance England, such as honour as an emotional disposition. Emotional expression also changed, since the late Middle Ages favoured vehement emotional expression, while in early modern England curtailment of any affective responses was advocated. Early modern England cut itself off from its medieval past in this manner and saw itself as “civilized” due to this restraint. Also some medieval courtly rituals were rejected. Expression of anger was no longer seen as natural and socially necessary. Shame started to be perceived as a private emotion and was not related to public shaming. The meaning of pride was discussed and love was separated from the medieval concept of charity. In contrast, in King Lear the question of embodiment of emotions is seen from a perspective similar to the medieval one. The article analyzes medievalism in terms of affections and studies the shift from the medieval ideas about them to the early modern ones.
King Lear unaocznia dwie kultury uczuć, kulturę średniowieczną i renesansową.

Based on the analysis of sources it can be stated that Polish presence near the king was constant and significant. The most significant officials temporarily supported the king, but did not accompany the ruler on his military campaigns. The king held Polish–Hungarian joint councils from as early as 1440. It is most probable that a significant part of the Poles took the Hungarian efforts of Władysław seriously, and many noble families saw great potential in a Hungarian service. In this paper we endeavored to call attention to the fact that a vast amount of Polish‑related genealogical data (seals, itinerary supplements) can be found from this era in the Hungarian and Austrian archives. We hope that this collection will provide assistance to many in their research.

Then, the precise survey of proceeding and provisions of the council is made with analysis of the content of the chapters and their textual correlation. In the conclusion is stressed that the council’s chapters standing close to the Eastern discipline are derived from universal canonical collections, and that the above-mentioned council should be regarded as first step in the longer process of reception of the Gregory VII’s canonical reform.

The paper presents the strategy of redevelopment of the post-industrial King’s Cross area in London – one of the biggest European investments in the last years (the surface of approx. 67 acres), which could be considered the perfect case study for similar works. The author described in details the investment process, as well as the principles and effects of functional and spatial changes that have led to creation of the new system of open space, adaptation of selected post-industrial buildings for new functions (also the buildings proclaimed as a monument) and also fostering a new urban dimension to the wastelands. Detailed architectural issues are presented on the example of 3 squares: Granary Square, Pancras Square and King’s Cross Square. Field research was realized from 2011 to 2016.

Opis:
This article analyzes the scene of the Sasanian king combating a lion in two rock reliefs. Most Sasanian Bas-reliefs belong to the first 150 years of the dynasty and most are located in modern Fars province. The reliefs typically depict the king’s investiture by a deity (who is usually Ahurā Mazdā, but, in some reliefs, Mithra or Anāhitā), the king with courtiers, the king with his family, the king at war, the king’s triumph over his enemies, and the king fighting and hunting wild animals. Two of the bas-reliefs of the king killing animals show him killing lions. One is located at Sar Mašhad and the other, less-known, is kept in the Haft-Tanān Museum, Shiraz, and was discovered at the foothills of Pahnu (Pahnā) Mount in Dārāb. In the ancient Near East, the lion symbolized power, courage, and ferociousness: whoever could confront it successfully was regarded as powerful and brave; consequently, many kings have been portrayed fighting lions (and other wild animals) during this period.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to delineate the representation of kingship in Tudor and Stuart England and its articulation in Shakespeare’s political drama, through the examples of Richard II (1599) and King Lear (1606), two illustrative plays of the respective eras. Conceived of as two-bodied, the sovereign is, from early medieval times, positioned in an uneasy liminal state whereby his natural body is also the incarnation of the mystical concept of the everlasting Body politic. Anxieties over this seemingly unbreakable continuity of mystical kingship become nonetheless palpable as Queen Elizabeth I lies dying, leaving no heir to the throne of England. The first Stuart monarch hence reinforces the doctrine of The Divine Right of Kings by confidently advancing the unique precedence of godhead over manhood in the monarch. Set in this context, Shakespeare’s two political figures question the validity of the king’s impregnable nature as they grapple with their human condition exposed to all mortal ills. When Richard II’s “tears wash away (his) balm” and his meta-physiological body withal, Shakespeare exposes the frailties underneath the fiction of the monarch’s two-bodied nature parodied in King Lear as “every inch a king”.

Manasseh of Judah: an idolatrous ruler and murderer to be condemned, as depicted in 2 Kgs 21:1-18, or a converted sinner and restorer of his kingdom, a pattern to follow, as presented in 2 Chr 33:1-20? These two biblical portrayals of the king cannot be reconciled without raising questions about the assumptions of the biblical historiographers who built up two alternative traditions about this biblical figure. The case of King Manasseh is therefore an intriguing example of the Chronicler’s reinterpretation of historical material found in the Books of Kings. It is argued that particular narrative strategy and theological issues lie behind this vision of the king and its significance for the addressees of both writings. Consequently, the biblical figure of Manasseh is somehow biased, and its historical reconstruction has its limitations.

Opis:
Martin Luther King Jr. cannot be said to have addressed the problem of terrorism in general because he proposed his philosophy of non-violence resistance within the context of the oppression, injustice, segregation, violence and discrimination suffered by the African Americans. Nevertheless, his philosophy captured ways by which we can fittingly address the problem of terrorism. Many of the methods of non-violence given by Martin Luther King Jr. are of paramount importance in the face of terrorism. His philosophy is basically important today in Nigeria owing to the fact that our unity as a country is threatened by the recurring activities of terrorism and as such we are at a cross road in the history of our country, where drastic decisions have to be taken to address this perilous trend. The philosophy of non-violent resistance as proposed by Martin Luther King Jr. is a veritable step towards a working solution, as it is not only an outcry against terrorism of any sort, but also an ideology that frowns against any form of action that results in the taking of human life or the carnage that comes with violence. His non-violent resistance theory which he developed after a deep study of Mahatma Gandhi’s theory of non-violence, is a radical approach towards the fight against violence of any sort inflicted on the African Americans of his time, an action borne of a passionate fight against racism. So, to aptly address the problem of terrorism in Nigeria, it is necessary we consult and apply some principles of the philosophy of non-violence resistance as postulated by Martin Luther King Jr.

Opis:
Isotopic and palaeomagnetic studies were carried out in the central part of King George Island. Selected mafic to intermediate igneous rocks were sampled for this purpose. Single-grain U-Pb dating of zircons from basalts to dacites was controlled by a whole rock 40Ar-39Ar data and the magnetostratigraphy. Five magmatic activity phases were distinguished in the SE coast of King George Island. The oldest, late Cretaceous (Campanian) phase represented by basalts of the Uchatka Point Formation are followed by the early to middle Eocene (~53–43 Ma) phase documented by the lava flows whose ages decrease from SW to NE. Next younger magmatic activity phases were recorded by the lava flows or vertical intrusions emplaced in the late Eocene (~37–35 Ma), late Oligocene (~~28-25 Ma) and late Pliocene to Holocene. The early to middle Eocene magmatic activity phase was the most extensive, producing the largest volume of magma in the study area. The new age determinations allow a more precise and credible stratigraphic correlation of the interbeds of sedimentary rocks observed in some places within the magmatic succession. The glacial provenance of the Herv' Cove diamictite is not obvious. It might represent a mountain river environment. Intense volcanic activity could be additional factor modelling the climate conditions of Antarctica in Paleogene

assassination of King Alexander I in 1934
Opis:
The article discusses the circumstances of the assassination of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in October 1934 in Marseille, France. The results of research served as a basis for the analysis of the course of events related to the assassination of King Alexander I, including the political context of the murder, its direct background and the earliest consequences for both Yugoslavia and the international scene.Within the broad spectrum of research issues involved in the assassination, there are some worthy of special attention, such as the organisation of King Alexander I’s visit to France, the characteristics of the assassin, the internal situation in Yugoslavia after the monarch’s death, the reactions of other governments to the event, and the investigation launched into the attack, followed by the steps taken in order to internationalise it.The basic research material for the analysis consisted of Serbian and Polish press articles from the interwar period, which constitute not just a reliable source, but often the only source available-yet a truly fascinating one. Moreover, the findings demonstrated in the present article have been verified in relation to the (often insufficient) Polish and international literature in this subject, as well as the archival materials available at the Yugoslavian Archives in Belgrade. The variety of approaches applied made it possible to discuss the circumstances of King Alexander’s assassination in great detail, otherwise unavailable in just one single publication. It also reveals the incompetence of the French police of that time and explains, at least in part, the background of the plot to kill the Yugoslav king.

In the sense of the Baire Category Theorem we show that the generic transformation T has roots of all orders (RAO theorem). The argument appears novel in that it proceeds by establishing that the set of such T is not meager - and then appeals to a Zero-One Law (Lemma 2). On the group Ω of (invertible measure-preserving) transformations, §D shows that the squaring map p: S → S^{2} is topologically complex in that both the locally-dense and locally-lacunary points of p are dense (Theorem 23). The last section, §E, discusses the relation between RAO and a recent example of Blair Madore. Answering a question of the author's, Madore constructs a transformation with a square-root chain of each finite length, yet possessing no infinite square-root chain.

Opis:
Dahsha [Bewilderment] is an Egyptian TV series written by scriptwriter Abdelrahim Kamal and adapted from Shakespeare’s King Lear. The TV drama locates Al Basel Hamad Al Basha, Lear’s counterpart, in Upper Egypt and follows a localized version of the king’s tragedy starting from the division of his lands between his two wicked daughters and the disinheritance of his sincere daughter till his downfall. This study examines the relationship between Dahsha and King Lear and investigates the position of the Bard when contextualized in other cultures, revisited in other locales, and retold in other languages. It raises many questions about Shakespeare’s proximity to the transcultural/transnational adaptations of his plays. Does Shakespeare’s discourse limit the interpretation of the adapted works or does it promote intercultural conversations between the varying worldviews? Where is the Bard positioned when contextualized in other cultures, revisited in other locales, and retold in other languages? Does he stand in the center or at the margin? The study attempts to answer these questions and to read the Egyptian localization of King Lear as an independent work that transposes Shakespeare from a central dominant element into a periphery that remains visible in the background of the Upper Egyptian drama.

Volcanic rocks from the Lions Rump area, which are the basement for a sequence of glaciomarine sediments of the Polonez Cove Formation, and lava flows from the Turret Point–Three Sisters Point area were sampled for thermogeochronological and palaeomagnetic investigations. Generally, andesitic lavas from King George Bay area consist mainly of clinopyroxene (Ti-augite) orthopyroxene (hyperstene) and plagioclase phenocrysts. The groundmass comprises mostly plagioclase laths, clinopyroxene, titanomagnetite and rare orthopyroxene crystals. However, the modal content, size, shape and distribution of phenocrysts are variable and specific for each sample. The Ar-Ar plateaus ages calculated for lavas from the Lions Rump area are very homogenous and point to middle Eocene age (Lutetian, ~44.5 Ma). The similar and consistent ages for volcanic basement for that area excluded the thesis about separate tectonic evolution of the Warszawa and Kraków blocks at least since the middle Eocene. The lavas from Turret Point and Three Sister Point are younger and were emplaced during the late Eocene (Bartonian/Priabonian: 37.3 š0.4 Ma and Priabonian: 35.35 š0.15 Ma, respectively). The results of isotopic investigations are consistent with magnetic polarities of the rocks indicating that the samples from the Lions Rump area are coeval with the lower part of the C20 polarity chron whereas the sample from Turret Point can be correlated with the upper part of the C17 polarity chron

This paper takes a relevance-theoretical approach to the English translation of “Дзікае паляванне караля Стаха” (1964), the Belarusian novel written by Uladzìmìr Karatkevìč – “King Stakh’s Wild Hunt” (translated by Mary Mintz, 1989). In doing so, it proposes a different perspective on the alleged ‘untranslatability’ of minority literature. The analysis takes into account various procedures applied to the different elements of the novel and reveals that Mintz makes strategic choices aimed at choosing the best solution for each problem individually.

Opis:
Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, iż efekt Kinga w sensie przemienności podaży i cen występował w pełni na dwu rynkach: trzody chlewnej i ziemniaków.
King effect is the phenomenon of the inverse proportion between the price of a given product and its supply. In theory, thanks to this compensation, revenues are relatively constant over time. The study was conducted in six markets in Poland: pigs, apples, wheat, rye, potatoes, and rape. On the basis of the calculations, it was found that only two markets were affected by the King effect, namely the pig market and the potato market. However, no revenue has been observed in any of the markets. In the course of the research, it was found that in all markets apart from the rape market, the price formation in the analyzed period had a significantly greater effect on the size of revenues.

Opis:
The tragic life of King Saul begins with the emphasis of the people, by the last judge of Israel, Samuel to set up the king-man. Although plans for salvation of Yahweh were from the beginning directed at the monarchy, but the moment and time is dependent on the Lord of Hosts, not from the people. Saul, however, is subjected to the anointing of Samuel and later also to the people, when the fate is established by the ruler of the chosen people. Saul’s history from the beginning of his kingship appears to the reader as a winning streak of Israel on the trail of battle, and there was no indication to the fact that subsequent events and deeds of Saul change the course of his life and will lead to rejection by Yahweh. Rejection of the rulers is associated with withdrawal from Saul spirit of Yahweh, and appears in the evil spirit that tormented him. Pericope 1 Sam 16,14-23 presents also the appearance of David at the royal court, whose playing was to calm the ruler and help in removing the evil spirit tormenting. An important issue in 1 Sam 16,14-23 is the fact that the ruler was supposed to be possessed by an evil spirit, which sent Yahweh, however, would He allow this? The answer appears in ancient beliefs about the concept of good and evil and their relationship with the deity or God. So considering the issue of possession of the knowledge of ancient times, people’s views should be stated that the possession of King Saul was a mental disorder, which then read as a manifestation of the evil spirit in man.

The rich port city of Gdańsk, a signifi cant centre of science and culture in the 17th century, was in many respects important to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was often visited by the kings of Poland, in the 17th century indeed by all the monarchs with the exception of Michał Korybut Wiśniowecki. The citizens of Gdańsk, legally the subjects of the Polish rulers, highly valued good relations with the Crown. Each royal visit was celebrated with great pomp, as were other stately events, such as royal elections, coronations, military victories and funerals. King Jan II Kazimierz visited the city on the Motława (Mottlau) three times. In 1651 he was there for a dozen or so days, whereas his later visits lasted several months: during the ‘Swedish Deluge’ he stayed from November 1656 to February 1657, and during peace negotiations with the Swedes from December 1659 to May 1660. Surviving sources confi rm active participation of Gdańsk musicians in celebrations associated with the monarch. However, these are mainly literary texts without music, information from chronicles and archival sources. The surviving musical relics are limited to 15 compositions by Paul Siefert from the second volume of Psalmorum Davidicorum…, dedicated to the king in 1651, as well as works by Johann Balthasar Erben written for the offi cial abdication of Jan Kazimierz in 1668: the alto aria Denk- und Dank-Altar ... Johannes Casimirus König zu Polen ‘Halt auff! grosses Himmels Liecht!’ (to a text by Ludwik Knaust, a Gdańsk writer), followed by instrumental Passacaglia.

Ancient, Byzantine and Macedonian Epic Poetry in the Book The Shadow of King Marko. Book review: Vitomir Mitevski (2017). The Shadow of King Marko: Ancient, Byzantine and Macedonian Epic Poetry. Skopje: Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, SkopjeThe book The Shadow of King Marko by prof. V. Mitevski can be perceived as some kind of a mental reflection on a very complex topic that treats Indo-European, Byzantine and Macedonian tradition. Such is this work, complex, extensively analytic, sometimes synthetic, particularly in the introductory parts that present the paths of the research process, but also in the conclusions that are expressed through numerous analytical passages. Main hypotheses are consequentially formed, derived and proven. Author’s style, short sentence period, clearly formulated idea, enable the reader to easily follow the complex topics. This book is clearly scientific per se. It can be listed among numerous literal-critical and literal-historical studies that originated since the ancient times, in the era of sophists, peripatetics and Alexandrian philosophers, but also in the new-age philological, systematic and scientific, classical studies. This book, beyond any doubt, can be an inspiring reading not only for the classical philologists, but also for the large number of experts in the field of humanistic sciences, Slavicists, neohellenists, ethnologists, folklorists, historians, byzantologists etc. The Shadow of King Marko is casted way back in the space and time, and there is a good chance that the shadow of this book will be casted a long way in the future. Vitomir Mitevski (2017). The Shadow of King Marko: Ancient, Byzantine and Macedonian Epic Poetry. Skopje: Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, SkopjeКнигата на проф. В. Antyczna, bizantyjska, i macedońska poezja epicka w monografii Cień Marka Królewicza. Recenzja książki: Vitomir Mitevski (2017). The Shadow of King Marko: Ancient, Byzantine and Macedonian Epic Poetry. Skopje: Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, SkopjeMonografię Vitomira Mitevskiego, Cień Marka Królewicza, można traktować jako swego rodzaju odblask mentalny pewnego bardzo złożonego tematu, który jest powiązany z indoeuropejską, bizantyjską i macedońską tradycją. To samo można powiedzieć o samej monografii, kompleksowej, w najwyższym stopniu analitycznej, a zarazem mającej ambicje syntetyczne, widoczne zwłaszcza we wprowadzeniu do każdego rozdziału i w podsumowaniach wieńczących liczne passusy analityczne. Formułowane konsekwentnie główne tezy książki zostały przedstawione i poparte dowodami.

The aim of the following paper is to examine the conflict between the cult of the Mother Goddess and Christianity, which affects King Arthur’s reign in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s original retelling of Arthurian legends – The Mists of Avalon (1983). The religious conflict presented in the novel is inextricably linked with representations of femininity and the figures of Morgaine (Morgan le Fay) and Queen Gwenhwyfar, who are dedicated, respectively, to Avalon and the Church. By investigating both women’s beliefs, actions, and relationship with Arthur, this paper will demonstrate how in Bradley’s retelling the transition from the worship of the Goddess to Christianity conditions King Arthur’s reign and ultimately contributes to his downfall.

Limestone erratics in the Early Miocene glacio−marine Cape Melville Formation of King George Island, West Antarctica, have yielded Early and Middle Cambrian small skeletal fossils (SSF) accompanied by calcified cyanobacteria, archaeocyath and spiculate sponges, trilobites and echinoderms. The SSF assemblage comprises disarticulated sclerites of chancelloriids, halkieriids, tommotiids, lapworthellids, palaeoscolecids, hyolithelminths, lingulate brachiopods, helcionelloid molluscs, hyoliths, and bradoriids. All 24 described species are common to Antarctica and Australia. Most are recorded here from Antarctica for the first time, including Shetlandia multiplicata gen. et sp. nov. and two new species Byronia? bifida and Hadimopanella staurata. The lithological and fossil contents of the boulders are almost identical with autochthonous assemblages from the Shackleton Limestone in the Argentina Range and Transantarctic Mountains. Cambrian outcrops around the Weddell Sea are a plausible source of the erratics. The fauna is closely similar to that from the uppermost Botomian Wilkawillina Limestone in the Flinders Ranges and Parara Limestone on Yorke Peninsula, and Toyonian Wirrealpa and Aroona Creek Limestones in the Flinders Ranges, as well as the Ramsay Limestone on Yorke Peninsula, all in the Arrowie and Stansbury Basins of South Australia. These very similar faunal and facies successions for Antarctica and Australia strongly support their common biotic and sedimentary evolution on the same margin of a greater Gondwana supercontinent throughout the Early Cambrian.

Opis:
Przedmiotem pracy jest omówienie pozycji króla Rzeczypospolitej powstałej w 1569 r. jako połączenie Królestwa Polski i Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego, będącego organem Rzeczypospolitej, wykonującego zwierzchnictwo nad terytoriami stanowiącymi jej lenna. W pracy przedstawiona została ewolucja zwierzchnictwa lennego, jako sfery stosunków publicznoprawnych, należących w okresie XIV–XVI w., a więc w okresie istnienia jeszcze Królestwa Polskiego, do jednej z prerogatyw władzy króla polskiego.
The main purpose of this paper is to present the place of King of the Commonwealth formed in 1569 as a connection of Kingdom Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania being an organ of the Commonwealth, carrying out the superiority over the territories they were her fiefs. In the paper was presented an evolution of fiefs superiority as a part of public law relations that were in the period of 14.–16. Century, when still existed only Kingdom of Poland, one of prerogatives of Polish King’s authority. After 1569, when the Commonwealth was formed, especially after 1573 – 1576 when were passed and gathered a binding force of law the Henrician Articles, the place of King in political and law system of the Commonwealth changed, what had the influence for the character and range, but also the way of execution the King’s superiority over the fiefs, that now from the juridical point of view became a subject of the Commonwealth power. In the following changes of political system of the Commonwealth, the King’s actions, performed a role an executive organ, made independently in exceptional situations as it were in the case of Prussian Fief and Lauenburg-Bytow Fief in 1657 need a confirmation of Diet of the Commonwealth. This situation were connected with the change of function of the fief relations and feudal law as an instrument regulated a political relations. The fiefs superiority as a King’s prerogative over the fiefs of the Commonwealth was in next time completely taken from personal elements staying as an empower to execution of feudal law of the Commonwealth represented through the kings post. In the age of the development of the international in 17. and especially in 18. Century, the ways of theirregulating of instruments of feudal law had began to be a relict, its application was dependent from the power and ability of the subject for his execution. However to weakness of theCommonwealth in 18. Century and decreasing of the role and position of Kings authority, it was more and more only formal. Leaving only a nominal superiority, political and juridical this became purely a fiction.

Opis:
In his Shakespearean productions Jan Klata tends to radically experiment with sets, texts, and contexts. He puts the plays in culturally and politically specific locations, experiments with bi- or multilingual productions, and incorporates other texts into the Shakespearean frame. In this way, he uses Shakespeare as a means to address contemporary problems and tensions that are vital for his geopolitical reality, exploring the issues of national identities, the cultural legacy of Europe and its nations, as well as past conflicts and present crises. Klata’s King Lear (Narodowy Teatr Stary, Kraków, 2014), set in the religious context of the Catholic Church and using mostly Polish language, with only decorative additions in foreign languages, does not engage in European politics with the same directness and force as his earlier productions. And yet, as I wish to argue, this performance is also strongly concerned with European identity, and may, therefore, be seen as a valid voice in the discussion on how Shakespearean productions help to understand our current-day reality.

Although the current Constitution of 1978 does not include the right to a legislative veto among royal prerogatives, this institution has a rich tradition in Spanish constitutionalism. In the 19th century, despite the clash between conservative and liberal ideas, the King almost continuously had the right to refuse to sanction law projects. Only the political changes of the 20th century finally deprived the monarch of the right to intervene in the legislative process. However, under the current Constitution, all laws must be sanctioned by the King, which often causes political and legal controversy.
Choć obecna Konstytucja z 1978 r. nie przewiduje wśród prerogatyw królewskich prawa do weta legislacyjnego, instytucja ta posiada bogatą tradycję w hiszpańskim konstytucjonalizmie.

Opis:
Written around 1460, the Chronicle of Spišska Sobota is a rather short narrative in Ostmitteldeutsch which relates in a somewhat abbreviated form the history of the Kingdom of Hungary from the end of the tenth century, with a special emphasis on the past of the German- speaking communities of the Spiš (in Hungarian Szépes) region where it was created. Among information concerning local history, the chronicler relates briefly the murder of an officer of the Hungarian King Ladislas IV (1272–1290): Czu dises koniges geczeiten, Anno d(omi)ni MCLXXVIII adyr eyn Jor dirfuer, Ist eyn her gewest ym Czips des koniges diner, der hatte den Czipsern gros widerdris und smocheit gethon, dorume dirschlugen sy yn und das ist geschen in Donnerstmargt, went In dem Jor Christi pey MCCCCXXVIII, do man den pron vuer der kirchen offente dervon langen Joren verdeckt was, do fandt man in dem selben pron vil menschen peyn und panczer und in dy keller fand man auch peyn, dorume musten dy Czipser disem konig Lasla gros gelt geben. The crime is also mentioned in the historical works of Joachim Leibitzer (1566–1623) and Israel Leibitzer (1602–1646), but the brief Latin note dedicated to this event (‘MCCLXXXVIII Incolae Quintofori hominem Regium interfecerunt, pro cujus morte notabilem summam pecuniarum dare compulsi sunt’2) is clearly an abbreviated version of the excerpt of the Chronicle of Spišska Sobota. This chronicle is thus the only source of information available concerning this thirteenth-century crime. In order to better understand the representation and the significance of the episode of the murder of Hungarian King Ladislas IV’s officer in the Chronicle of Spišska Sobota, this essay is divided into three parts. The first part presents the report of the murder in the chronicle, whereas the second part focuses on the motive for the crime. Finally, the last part focusses on the chronicler’s localization of the crime.

In the homily he said that it was a man of `a splendid mind and righteous heart'; he also tried to convince the audience that the King should be respected. In the satire he defended the King against the charges of the opposition who said that he was not a king's son, that he was too young, too good and that he loved learned people. The charges resulted from envy, spite and foolishness, as during his reign Stanisław August effected far-reaching reforms in Poland. Among others, he established the Commission for National Education – the first ministry of education in the world, that played an important role after the political collapse of the state.

Opis:
In August and September 1109, a war was fought between Henry V, King of Germany, and Prince Bolesław Krzywousty (Boleslaus Wrymouth) of Poland. Henry’s expedition against Poland was a response to the Polish ruler’s actions of the previous year, when his attack on Bohemia sparked the fiasco of the German expedition to Hungary. It was then that King Henry V had vowed to exact his revenge on Bolesław Krzywousty.1 Henry was encouraged to retaliate by the Czech duke Svatopluk,2 not only as a means of gaining revenge for earlier events, but also because Svatopluk’s rival for the throne, Bořivoj, ousted in 1107, had found sanctuary in Poland. Before the war, the German king had sent an envoy demanding that Bolesław Krzywousty reinstate his older brother Zbigniew, who had been removed from power and exiled from Poland. He also demanded that Bolesław pay a tribute of 300 silver grzywnas (marks) or supply 300 knights for an expedition (to Italy, where Henry V intended to assume the crown of the Holy Roman Empire).

Dzieło to powstało pod koniec 1502roku, a spisano je w związku ze spodziewanymi narodzinami syna Władysława Jagiellończykai Anny de Foix. Traktat nawiązywał do powstałego we Włoszech, u początkówepoki humanizmu, modelu edukacyjnego. Porady w nim zawarte miały prowadzić dobudowania majestatu królewskiego. Zaprezentowany w tym dziele model można uznaćza tradycyjny. Władca dzięki cechom nabytym w trakcie wychowania – zgodnie z tymmodelem – miał uzyskać pozytywny odbiór u poddanych.

Opis:
The paper presents the proposal of a method for an indirect evaluation of geomorphic activity on ice-free areas on King George Island (South Shetlands, West Antarctica) through analysis of climatic conditions affecting the mobility of mineral matter. It was assumed that weather conditions affected the movement of mineral matter, which in turn determined geomorphic activity on ice-free areas, which currently occupy over 25 km2 of Admiralty Bay. On the basis of encoded values of six variables: air temperature, wind speed, rainfall, sunshine, ground temperature, and thickness of snow cover, diurnal types of the efficiency of mineral matter circulation were determined which were then clustered using the k-means method. After the cumulation of results for 7-day periods, a total of 59 homogeneous periods were obtained characterised by diurnal types of geomorphic activity (1, 2 and 3) in the observation period from April 10, 1990 to January 13, 1994. The summer season is a period with a high efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity, while winter time is one with a low efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity. Periods with an average efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity correspond to ascending and descending transition times. It is possible to associate the descending period with the autumn season in the temperate zone, while the ascending period, with spring-time.

Opis:
About 34 Ma ago there was a radical change of climate that led to the formation of Antarctic ice sheet. King George Island, located in the South Shetland Islands volcanic arc (northern Antarctic Peninsula region), is one of a few places in West Antarctica which shows a geological record of sedimentary environments preceding development of the ice sheet. The Eocene sedimentary facies occur in the dominantly volcanogenic succession of King George Island. They have been recognized in the Arctowski Cove and Point Thomas formations (Ezcurra Inlet Group) and in the Mount Wawel Formation (Point Hennequin Group) in Admiralty Bay, and in the Mazurek Point Formation (Chopin Ridge Group) and Lions Cove Formation (Polonia Glacier group) in King George Bay. They record a cooling trend in terrestrial environments that began at termination of the Early/Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum, and was followed by a significant deterioration of climate during Late Eocene and earliest Oligocene, directly preceding glacial conditions in the northern Antarctic Peninsula region. The ongoing research confirms the existence of three preglacial climatic stages (PGS-1 – PGS-3) during Eocene – earliest Oligocene, from humid, warm to moderate climate (PGS-1), through cool and dry climate (PGS-2), up to cold and humid conditions (PGS-3). Studies were carried out on usually fine-grained volcanoclastic sediments, containing Podocarpaceae–Araucaria–Nothofagus plant fossils assembly. Beds of reworked pyroclastic material alternate with lava flows or volcanic agglomerates, as well as ex situ blocks of Eocene volcanogenic sediments on a moraine. Calculated geochemical indices of weathering (CIA, PIA and CIW) confirm moderate to high chemical weathering under warm and humid climate conditions at the beginning and deterioration of conditions in the end of Eocene.

This article discusses the biblical figure of David as depicted in a Crimean Karaim translation of a maskilic drama called Melukhat Shaʾul ‘Saul’s Kingdom’. The character of the future king is presented in the context of his relationship with the other main characters of the play, namely king Saul, his son Jonathan and daughter Michal. Moreover, the article demonstrates differences in the manner in which David’s early life is depicted and interpreted that distinguishes it from the drama described in The First Book of Samuel.

On 3 November 1771 in Warsaw the Bar confederates made an attempt against Stanisław August Poniatowski's liberty in order to force him to proclaim himself against Russia. Jan Kuźma called Kosiński, who was the leader of a small party of conspirators, kidnapped the King. The escort of the King's carriage was defeated; one of the haiduks, Jerzy Henryk Butzow, died from the bullets, and another one, Szymon Mikulski, was wounded with a sabre. A bullet pierced the King's fur coat, and during the kidnapping he lost his shoe. Kuźma offered the captive his own boot with a spur, but ultimately, remorseful, having been promised remission of his guilt, he freed the monarch on the following day. Stanisław August who was certain that he had been saved by miracle, kept all the relics of the event: his own garment, called “suit of unhappiness”, Kuźma's boot, Mikulski's hat cut with the sabre, and even the bullets taken out of Butzow's body. After his abdication he took them to St Petersburg. After the King's death the relics were inherited by Prince Józef Poniatowski, and finally, in 1815, they were given to Świątynia Sybilli (Sybil's Temple) in Puławy, the first Polish historical museum established by Princess Izabela Czartoryska. Of these objects the royal shirt and stocking, Kuźma's boot and Mikulski's hat have been preserved in today's Muzeum Czartoryskich (the Czartoryskis' Museum) in Cracow. The hat was used by Jan Matejko as a model for his painting “Konstytucja 3 Maja” (“The Constitution of 3rd May”) that is now exhibited in the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

The analysis of Janusz Korczak’s texts in terms of the journey motif and homo viator hero. Presenting the subject against a backdrop of human needs concerning travelling, a life journey of a man as well as showing other authors’ approaches to the subject. Method: Hermeneutic method, narratology, psychoanalysis. The research has shown a high interest in the journey motif and the road motif in world, Polish and children’s literature of the 19th century. The analysis of Korczak’s works has proved that the writer deliberately employed the journey motif and the life as a journey metaphor to deliver his perception of the world. The „physical” journey of the hero is a metaphor for his spiritual and psychological peregrination, which is applicable in numerous literary contexts.

TOMB OF KING JAGIELLO (MARBLE ANALYSIS)
WAWEL CATHEDRAL
Opis:
In an attempt to identify the marble of the tomb of King Jagiello, three kinds of marbles were used as a refernce material, i.e.: Italian Ammonitico Rosso, Austrian Roter Knollenkalk and Hungarian red. Structure, texture and mineral composition were examined and SEM-EDAX analysis was done. Very limited size of the sample available disabled the use of the optical microscope. Generally, the tomb is made of red limestone with a nodular structure and sound, non porous texture. The nodules are 1 to 5 cm in diameter. This kind of a decorative limestone being succeptible to carving and polishing is traditionally called a 'marble'. Four varieties were identified in the tomb: Variety 1. Colour is red-brownish, nodules are slightly lighter than a matrix. Indistinct parallel bedding, stylolites and ammonites can also be seen. Variety 2. Generally, red-brownish in colouring, with stronger contrast between nodules (yellow-pinkish) and matrix (brown-reddish). Variety 3. Dark red-brownish. Nodules do not contrast strongly from the matrix. Variety 4. Colour is intermediate between varieties 1 and 2. Structure, texture and colour point to the Ammonitico Rosso marble as a stone applied in the tomb. Size, shape and colour of the nodules as well as colouring of the matrix make it similar to a variety that occurs in the vicinity of Verona and is called Rosso di Verona. Hungarian marbles obviously differ from that used in the tomb. Their colouring is generally darker and more brownish. Nodules are less pronounced and less contrasted from the matrix. SEM and SEM-EDAX analyses did not appear particularly diagnostic. The sample from the tomb was generally more fine grained than the reference samples thus disabling comparison of further structural and textural features. However, similarities were detected between the tomb marble and the Rosso di Verona marble, e.g. in the texture and number of genarations of the micrite, presence of clay minerals and iron oxides. Noticeable is a presence of Al, Si and K in the tomb marble, being apparently connected with clay minerals and with products of chemical weathering. All this point to the Rosso di Verona as the most probable stone applied in the tomb. Chemical composition of the marbles form the Verona area is following: Si - 5.90% CaO - 51.31% MgO - 0.14% CO2 - 40.48% Fe2O3 - 0.66 % FeO - traces Al2O3 - 0.84% Mn - traces Average porosity is less than 0.5%, and water sorption is less than 0.1% (W. D. Grimm, R. Snethlage, 1984).

The article examines religious topics in dedicatory letters for the Polish Protestant Bibles of the 16th and 17th century. The New Testament published by Jan Seklucjan (1551–1553), the Brest Bible (1563) and the Gdansk Bible (1632) were dedicated to the reigning kings towards whom the Protestants expressed their expectations about the place of the Church / religion in the state and the role of the ruler. The dedicatory letters by Seklucjan, Mikolaj Radziwill and Krzysztof Radziwill highlighted the concept of the primacy of secular authority over the Church, namely, the sovereignty of the monarch, personifying the majesty and law of the Republic over the Church of God, i.e. people who constitute the community of faith. According to the Polish political status, king, due to his office, played the role of the “servant of the Republic”, and as the guardian of the legal order, was not to be the ruler of conscience, but the guardian of freedom of speech and religion.

In this article the author tries to look at Jesus Christ as a king. The term „king” appeares on pages of the New and the Old Testament many times. Having that in mind the author analyzes the portrait of Jesus as a king in the Gospel according to St John. He does that particularly in the de- scription of the suffering of the Master from Nazareth. St John mentions Christ's royal title mainly in the account of Jesus being questionned by Pilate, his suffering on Golgotha as well as in the de- cription of events that take place after his death. The analysis of these facts will reveal the signific- ance of Jesus's royal title as well as in what St John saw the royal nature of Jesus and finally what his royal activity was based on.

Deschampsia antarctica Desv. plants collected on King George Islands (Antarctica) at two localities that differ in topographic and nutrition conditions exhibited morphological variation that differentiated plants of both locations. The molecular variation characteristic to individuals of both sites was tested using AFLP approach in order to verify whether morphological variation characteristic to the plants resulted from environmental factors or possibly from differences at the DNA level. Four primer pair combinations were used to generate 339 AFLP fragments, 132 of which were polymorphic and allowed evaluation of genetic relationships among D. antarctica individuals. Chi-square test revealed that only 12 signals were discriminative for the plants from both locations. Cluster analysis conducted on these AFLP fragments demonstrated that plants from the location rich in biogenes were more polymorphic than those from poor one. Our data suggest that the phenotypic variation specific to plants of both locations seem to be the result of adaptation to the environmental conditions like soil and moisture rather than reflect genetic differences.

Opis:
The itinerary here attempts to reconstruct the system which King Władysław Łokietek used to run the state. The reconstruction is based on the names of places he visited and dates when he sojourned there. The main source of information being the royal documents Łokietek issued in the years 1320-1333. The second group of information consisted of annals and chronicles dealing with the period in question, the most valuable being the Rocznik Traski (The Traski Annals). Apart from the Polish annals the author used also the foreign sources, mainly the Teutonic chronicles written by Wiganda, Peter of Dusburg and anonymous writers: the Oliwa chronicle, Chronica terrae Prussiae and the Teutonic diary of the first half of the 14th century. The records of the proceedings in the Polish-Teutonic case going on in the 14th and 15th centuries, especially the trial which took place in 1339. Out of the total number of 130 bits of information collected from the sources as many as 83 come from documents. The number of data for each year varies from 2 to 11 full bits of information (that is, containing exact date, the name of the concrete place and the statement that the king was there). The list of the gathered data allow us to attempt to divide the years of Łokietek's reign (the period of 1320-1333) with regard to the regularity of his tours into two groups. To the first one belong the years from 1320 to 1326 inclusive. It is possible to observe in those years a regularity in the king's tours round Poland. In the remaining years, 1327-1333, despite that there are almost the same places and in similar periods of the year, this regularity was disturbed, the fact which makes it impossible to draw some binding conclusions as to the system of tours in relation to the whole period of Łokietek's reign. It is necessary then to reconstruct the system on the basis of the data from the years mainly of the first group. One should bear in mind, however, that the sources are scarce as regards the matter in question, therefore we should rather talk about hypotheses. Łokietek's sojourn in Little Poland in the years 1320-1326 is confirmed. Usually, he was there in winter or in spring, then in some years during late spring also in Kuyavia. After that he would usually spend some time in Greater Poland in summer and return to Little Poland about autumn. This suggests a relationship between the seasons and his sojourn in particular territories: Little Poland − in winter and autumn, rarely in spring; Kuyavia − a sojourn in spring, Greater Poland − in summer. This may reflect his itinerary of tours around the state which would look as follows: Kraków − Brześć Kujawski − Poznań − Pyzdry − Kalisz − Kraków. It is likely that thus could have looked the king's tour after coronation, although there is no evidence that Łokietek had such a special (and regarded by historian as traditional) tour at all. The period of 1327-1333 was dominated by wars. As a rule, one expedition took place in a year. It is likely that this conspired to disturb the regularity of Łokietek's tours in those years. Among the places the king visited Kraków stands out (1320-1326; sojourns in autumn and in spring; 1327-1333: in spring and summer), then in the years 1320-1326: Poznań, Brześć and Pyzdry, and in the years 1327-1333: Wiślica, Poznań and Sandomierz. It seems that the reason why a certain place was chosen for Łokietek's visit was not only the geographic and political factor but also the religious one. For one can observe a coincidence between the dates of the king's sojourn in some places and the dates of saint patrons of those places. This may suggest that Łokietek took part in feasts and church fetes celebrated at the territory under his reign.
