The main object of the article is an attempt to answer the question about the limits of freedom and independence of professional designers. It seems to be important, especially now, when we can observe how creative industries provide to innovative development of society and to competitive advantage. Is it possible to have autonomy being a designer? Referring to B. Bourdieu’s field theory and idea of socially responsible design (Papanek, 2012) it will be shown the context of this profession as a balance of power between the individual actors (designers, client, users, society) in the field of design. Object of the present text is description of the designer’s profession in relation to the subjectively perceived degree of professional independence. The example used to analyze this issue are interviews conducted among British designers from Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design.

W artykule zostały omówione wyniki i metodyka pracy nad narzędziem badawczym, które ma stanowić wsparcie w procesie projektowym oraz klasyfikacji małych wnętrz miejskich na przykładzie wnętrz kwartałów (podwórek) w śródmieściach miast. Wskazano czynniki i wytyczne stanowiące podstawę do kształtowania form architektoniczno-urbanistycznych oraz określono zakres działań kreacyjnych we wnętrzach kwartałów miejskich. Badania zostały oparte na kilkunastu zrealizowanych przykładach. W wyniku prowadzonych badań sformułowano wnioski wskazujące kierunki działań kreacyjnych.
The article discusses the results and methodology of working on a research tool to support the design process and classify small urban interiors using the example of interior quarters (courtyards) in city centers. It identified the factors and guidelines that underpin the shaping of architectural and urban forms and defined the scope of creative activities in the interiors of urban quarters. The research was based on more than a dozen completed examples. As a result of the studies, conclusions were drawn indicating the directions of creative activities.

The paper presents method for logic controllers multi context implementation by means of partial reconfiguration. The UML state machine diagram specifies the behaviour of the logic controller. Multi context functionality is specified at the specification level as variants of the composite state. Each composite state, both orthogonal or compositional, describes specific functional requirement of the control process. The functional decomposition provided by composite states is required by the dynamic partial reconfiguration flow. The state machines specified by UML state machine diagrams are transformed into hierarchical configurable Petri nets (HCfgPN). HCfgPN are a Petri nets variant with the direct support of the exceptions handling mechanism. The paper presents placesoriented method for HCfgPN description in Verilog language. In the paper proposed methodology was illustrated by means of simple industrial control process.

The purpose of this article is to present specific problems related to the violation of intellectual property in the field of visual communication and an attempt to identify more effective ways to protect it. Legal protection works in the area of visual communication do not guarantee respect for intellectual property. Jurisprudence encounters problems at the core of which is the discretionary nature of the assessment of the originality of artistic works. The article presents case studies that illustrate this state very clearly. Many artists do not enter a legal challenge in the case of plagiarism of their projects because of the uncertain effect of the procedure and troublesome and sometimes even expensive process. In case of violation of someone else’s intellectual property rights in respect of the works belonging to the area of visual communication the attitude of the designer is essential. Very important are also circumstances in which there is a breach of intellectual property. The analysis of these circumstances can be a starting point to searching for effective ways to prevent the infringement of intellectual property, with particular emphasis on the indication of the illusory benefits of this practice, obtained in such a specific field as visual communication. Possible courses of action in order to reduce the practice of intellectual property violations were proposed. The analysis of these measures is based on the concept of searching for the maximum benefit that can be achieved in co-operation of the designer with the customer. The analyses of individual situations lead to a conclusion that the designer has a maximum benefit when he fully realizes the original design, created as a result of a reasonably long and conducted with due diligence and thoroughness of the design process. Accordingly, strong emotional involvement in the project also creates a unique opportunity for artistic effect. Such a project, entitles the creator to a sufficiently high salary and provides him with an opportunity to promote and achieve further attractive orders. The customer has a maximum benefit in a situation when he receives a unique design, valuable in terms of art, that gives rise to the effective marketing activities. In the high-potential project the opportunities of reimbursement for the costs should be sought. The sphere of visual communication enters a period of formation of the patterns of behavior, including ethical ones. In an era of increasing competition not only the talent and artistic competence of the designer begins to count, but also the model of design process preferred by him and an opinion about him in the environment. It is also the place to assess the ethical behavior of designers and include it into the evaluation process of their selection by the customer. The article talks about furniture design in the teaching process at the Department of Fine Arts and Design at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. Students implement projects in the designing socially responsible, supported by skills in the field of practical application of the design thinking methodology and practical skills to typologize and prepare technical documentation of furniture. Manual tasks with wood give you the practical ability to work with the material and shape and develop the aesthetics and the ability to perceive the values of the material. Project analyzes in terms of form and function allow you to consolidate analytical thinking, drawing conclusions what is necessary in the design process.

Opis:
This study proposes a new integrated analytical-field design method for multi-disc magnetorheological (MR) clutches. This method includes two stages, an analytical stage (composed of 36 algebraic formulas) and a field stage based on the finite element method (FEM). The design procedure is presented systematically, step-by-step, and the results of the consecutive steps of the design calculations are depicted graphically against the background of the entire considered clutch. The essential advantage of the integrated method with this two-stage structure is the relatively high accuracy of the first analytical stage of the design procedure and the rapid convergence of the second field stage employing the FEM. The essence of the new method is the introduction of a yoke factor ky (the concept of which is based on the theory of induction machines) that determines the ratio of magnetomotive force required to magnetise the entire magnetic circuit of the clutch to the magnetomotive force required to magnetise the movement region. The final value, the yoke factor ky is determined using loop calculations. The simplicity of the developed design method predisposes its use in optimisation calculations. The proposed method can also be adapted to other MR devices analysed in shear mode.

Artykuł przedstawia słownictwo rzadkie, rozumiane w niniejszej pracy jako poświadczone przez jedną osobę, w mowie mieszkańców okolic Poddębic (woj. łódzkie) na przykładzie pola tematycznego WYPOSAŻENIE WNĘTRZ. Autorka, posługując się metodą ilościową, pokazuje, że słowa rzadkie obejmują znaczącą część zgromadzonego materiału. Z rozważań wynika, że ponad 60% z nich stanowią jednostki ogólnopolskie, natomiast spośród leksemów dyferencyjnych odnotowano najwięcej gwarowych oraz niewystępujących w wybranych źródłach. W przypadku słów nienotowanych najwięcej jest jednostek dyferencyjnych pod względem słowotwórczym i semantycznym, a gwarowych – pod względem leksykalnym. Materiał pozyskano metodą kwestionariuszową, w formie nagrywanych rozmów z 44 mieszkańcami powiatu poddębickiego.
This article presents rare vocabulary, defined in this study as testified by one person, in the speech of inhabitants of the surroundings of Poddębice (Łódź voivodship) on the example of the thematic field INTERIOR DESIGN. The author, using the quantitative method, shows that rare words are found in a substantial portion of the collected material. What follows from the discussion is that over 60% of them are general Polish units. However, in the group of differential lexemes, the majority were dialectal lexemes and ones not found in the selected sources. In the case of units that are not recorded, most of them are diff erential in terms of word-formation and semantics, while in the case of dialectal units – in terms of lexis. The material was obtained using the questionnaire method in the form of recorded conversations with 44 residents of Poddębice poviat.

The relation between creative activities and the cities in which they are concentrated is that of mutual influence and dependence. This kind of dynamics is well described by the concept of the creative field by Scott (2006, 2008, 2010, 2014). According to this concept, there is a shared relational context among creative actors in a given place, as well as between them and the local socio-economic-institutional context. Consequently, the economic profile and innovation capacity of a city are determined by the main sectors based there. In this paper, I discuss the role of the creative field in developing the relation between the city of Berlin and creative actors of the fashion design sector, as well as elements of the creative field that are considered relevant by fashion designers in their creative work. This perspective allows the underscoring of some relevant drivers that have made Berlin one of the most relevant places for fashion design in Germany and the whole of Europe. This research has been supported by administrative data from the period 1990–2015, along with personal interviews in the fashion design sector. Shown are not only the existing relations between the urban context and the creative activities of designers, but also how the development of the creative field of the city might be influenced. Consequently, the creative work of fashion designers and their location decisions have to be considered in relation to the creative field as a dynamic combination of variable elements that influence, and are influenced by, each other.

This paper presents the design and the electromagnetic field simulation of axial-flux permanentmagnet stepper motor with the disc type rotor. The stepper motor with disc type permanent magnet rotor shows the advantages of higher torque at high speed, low moment of inertia, high torque to weight ratio, low power consumption and ironless rotor having minimum iron loss using permanent magnets and prepregs. This paper describes a design of four phase microstepping motor with the disc type rotor. The FEM modeling and the 3D electromagnetic field simulation of the disk stepper motor with permanent magnets is being subject of the article, too. Disc rotor type permanent magnet stepper motor for high torque to inertia ratio is ideal for robotics and CNC machines.

In the paper the recent trends in the fi eld of innovation in the EU are presented. The role of innovation in the European Union has been growing as one of the crucial factor of the development of the EU economy and society although it has never had a strong legal bases in the EU thirties. Its development has been stimulated mainly by the EU strategies, plans and initiatives but fi nally it became the legitimate part of the Research and Innovation policy of the EU. In the paper the main EU offi cial documents and the newest (2016) indicators of innovation relating to the EU regions has been analyzed and discussed. “The Innovation Union” and other suggestions of the Commission brought new solutions relating to innovation emphasizing the role of design management, digital design and open innovation. The organizational and esthetic design should be the central unit of a company while open innovation should be based on digital platforms applying the newest ICT technologies and social participation. Such paradigm of innovation is stimulating the development of modern industry (i.e. Industry 4.0) what should be taken under the consideration in Poland.

Magnetic field is usually generated using magnets realized as a set of simple coils. In general, those magnets generate magnetic field with nonzero components in all directions. Usually during the design process only one component of the magnetic field is taken into account, and in the optimization procedure the currents and positions of simple coils are found to minimize the error between the axial component of the magnetic field and the required magnetic field in the ROI. In this work, it is shown that if the high quality homogeneous magnetic field is generated then indeed one may neglect non-axial components. On the other hand, if the obtained magnetic field is not homogeneous either due to design requirements of too restrictive constrains, then all other components may severely deteriorate the quality of the magnetic field. In the second part of the paper, we show how to design a 3D transversal coil system to solve problems which are intractable in the 1D case.

The primary aim of this research study was to model acoustic conditions of the Courtyard of the Gdańsk University of Technology Main Building, and then to design a sound reinforcement system for this interior. First, results of measurements of the parameters of the acoustic field are presented. Then, the comparison between measured and predicted values using the ODEON program is shown. Collected data indicate a long reverberation time which results in poor speech intelligibility. Then, a thorough analysis is perform to improve the acoustic properties of the model of the interior investigated. On the basis of the improved acoustic model two options of a sound reinforcement system for this interior are proposed, and then analyzed. After applying sound absorbing material it was noted that the predicted speech intelligibility increased from bad/poor rating to good category.

Appropriate risk assessment plays a fundamental role in the design. . The authors propose a possible method of design risk mitigation, which follows recommendations included in Eurocode 7. The so-called “Observational Method” (OM) can produce savings in costs and programmes on engineering projects without compromising safety. The case study presented is a complex design solution that deals with the heavy foundations of a gantry crane beam as one of the elements of a Deepwater Container Terminal extension. The paper presents a detailed process of the design of the rear crane beam being a part of the brand new berth, together with its static analysis, as well as the long-term results of observations, which have revealed the real performance of the marine structure. The case presented is based on excessive preliminary field tests and technical monitoring of the structure, and is an example of a successful OM implementation and design risk mitigation.

Flow fields influence the deployment of the reactant gases over the surface of catalyst layer and the removal of the produced water from the cell. An optimum flow field design should provide lowest energy loss, uniform mass distribution and minimize pressure drop between inlet and outlet of the gas stream. An even reactant distribution reduces the mass transport losses and thus allows higher power density. This study is focused on flow fields inspired by veins of the tree leaves, which have effective performance improvement by minimizing the pressure drop and even deploy reactant gases without water flooding. The branching of flow channels corresponds to the Murray's law, which is also applicable to plants. Additionally semi cylindrical obstacles were fabricated at the bottom of the daughter channels to increase the diffusion into the gas diffusion layer. Cylindrical obstacles were applied to reduce the concentration losses, especially at the high current densities. Cell performance and current density vs temperature distribution measurements show that the new innovative designs shows a better performance compared to standard serpentine design by 42.1% at 0.4 V operating voltage. Furthermore, homogenous current and temperature distributions and better water removal are achieved.

In this paper the design and the magneto-static simulation of axial-flux permanent- magnet stepper motor with the disc type rotor is presented. Disk motors are particularly suitable for electrical vehicles, robots, valve control, pumps, centrifuges, fans, machine tools and manufacturing. The brushless machine with axial flux and permanent magnets, also called the disc-type machine, is an interesting alternative to its cylindrical radial flux counterpart due to the disk shape, compact construction and high torque density. This paper describes a design of four phase microstepping motor with the disc type rotor. The FEM modeling and the 3D magneto-static simulation of the disk stepper motor with permanent magnets is being subject of the article, too. Disc rotor type permanent magnet stepper motor for high torque to inertia ratio is ideal for robotics and CNC machines.

In order to study the design and stability control of deep soft rock chamber group, taking ninth coal mine of Hebi Coal Power Co., Ltd. as the engineering background, The main problem in normal design is analyzed with the combined method of FLAC3D numerical simulation and field engineering test. and then puts forward targeted control measures and carries out field application. The results show that, compared with the conventional design, the intensive design can reduce the stress concentration degree and plastic zone range of the surrounding rock, as well as reduce the quantities. Compared with conventional supporting schemes, the surrounding rock deformation greatly reduces by more than 82% after adopting bolting and shotcreting with wire mesh + anchor cable + floor anchor supporting. Among them, the floor heave control has obvious effect, and the decreasing amplitude reaches more than 93%. The field application shows that the surrounding rock deformation of the main chamber is within the allowable range, and the chamber control effect is good. Therefore, the research results can provide reference for the design and control of similar chamber groups.

The core goal of this paper is to put forward a feasible scheme of noise reduction for a target forklift on the basis of solving the problem of vibration and acoustic radiation from complex structures in infinite domain. Based on the previous report and vibration acceleration tests, the acoustic virtual wind tunnel model of forklift power compartment was established using finite element method and boundary element method, in which the perfectly matched layer was first applied to simulate the attenuation propagation of sound waves in air. In addition, according to the distribution characteristics of sound pressure field with different frequencies, the acoustic energy mainly radiated through the bottom and right side, and concentrated in the low frequency. Consequently, the acoustic packaging design for the whole forklift power compartment was presented, and a satisfying noise reduction effect was achieved.

This paper presents a design method of high-speed digital comparators on FPGA/SoC by means of hierarchical structures. A synthesis technique of hierarchical structures for comparators is offered. In this technique, the comparator best hierarchical structure is empirically found for a certain FPGA family. The proposed method allows reducing a delay for 256-bits comparators by 1.245 to 2.516 times as compared with a traditional approach, and for 512-bits comparators by 3.399 times. The method also allows reducing an area by 40.2% on occasion.

Głównym celem artykułu jest teoretyczna synteza zawartych w literaturze wyników badań nad myśleniem projektowym, aby lepiej zrozumieć jego zasady i cechy charakterystyczne oraz towarzyszące mu procesy, a także zaproponować sposoby wykorzystania poczynionych ustaleń dotyczących myślenia projektowego w działaniach na rzecz bezpieczeństwa i porządku publicznego (BiPP) w środowiskach lokalnych. Przedstawiono dwa metodyczne podejścia, nieodzowne w myśleniu projektowym. Pierwsze to metodyka, której istotę wyraża triada: inspiracja, ideacja, implementacja, znajdująca zastosowanie w projektowaniu działań dla BiPP dostosowanych do aktualnych uwarunkowań konkretnego miejsca i czasu. Drugie to metodyka projektowania rozpoczynająca się od zdefiniowania modelu normatywnego danej formy działalności dla BiPP. Przedstawiono też zasady wypracowania modelu projektowej działalności, zapewniającego optymalne zaspokojenie potrzeb danej osoby/grupy, oraz wdrożenia go do praktyki i jego dalszego doskonalenia.
The overriding goal of the paper is to present a theoretical synthesis of the findings of the research on design-oriented thinking found in the subject literature in order to better understand its principles and characteristic features and accompanying processes, and to suggest ways of using such findings with regard to design-oriented thinking in safety and public order activities (Polish: BiPP) in local environments. Two methodical approaches have been proposed, indispensable in design-oriented thinking. The first one rests on methodology, the essence of which is expressed by the inspiration, ideation and implementation triad, used in the design of activities for BiPP adapted to the current conditions of a particular place and time. The second one hinges upon design methodology, which begins with defining the normative model of a given form of activity for BiPP. A model of this activity has been worked out to ensure a design activity model that would guarantee otpimal satisfation of the needs of a given community, and to facilitate its implementation and further development
