We prove a variant of Hildebrandt's theorem which asserts that the convex hull of the essential spectrum of an operator A on a complex Hilbert space is equal to the intersection of the essential numerical ranges of operators which are similar to A. As a consequence, it is given a necessary and sufficient condition for zero not being in the convex hull of the essential spectrum of A.

Essential facilities doctrine
Opis:
Formed at the end of the nineteenth century in the United States, the essential facilities doctrine was created to prevent the refusal of access to certain key equipment, which is used as an instrument to secure the dominant position of the undertaking in those markets where the emergence of competition is strictly related to obtaining access to key device. The author describes the initiation in the 1970’s of the acquisition of the American doctrine by European Union law by focusing on the role of the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union in this process. Both American and European prsemises for an application of the essential facilities doctrine are presented, as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The use of an essential oil with a therapeutic purpose depends on many conditions. First of all, only substances whose quality meets the guidelines of the modern, current Polish standard PN-EN ISO 9235: 2021-12 (ICS 71.100.60 - Essential oils) and which are classified as essential oils can be used in aromatherapy, i.e. for therapeutic purposes. A very important role in obtaining essential oils of high therapeutic quality is played by the place and method of cultivation of the plant from which the oil is extracted, safety in maintaining the purity of the essential oil during its extraction, and compliance with the special requirement to label the essential oil package. Fragrance, synthetic and natural oils do not meet these requirements and cannot be used for therapeutic purposes.

The article presents a methodical approach to conformity assessment related to the introduction, putting into service on the European market of electrical or electrotechnical products. The developed methodology can be an effective control tool, allowing to assess whether all activities within the conformity assessment performed by the manufacturer have been carried out. The aim of the study is to present the possibility of adapting the developed methodology of approach to the assessment of compliance with the essential requirements in industrial conditions. In the case of the industry being analyzed, the basis for conformity assessment is the requirements set out in the New Approach Directives. The essential requirements set out in New Approach Directives must be met if the product is placed on the market or putting into service. The article presents the implementation of the conformity assessment process based on harmonized standards with the directives related to the product in question. The application of harmonized standards in the conformity assessment process allowed the manufacturer to use the so-called principles of presumption of conformity, referred to in the Act on conformity assessment systems and market surveillance.

A potential cause of essential thrombocythaemia can be seen as the V617F point mutation within Janus kinase 2. This mutation occurs in 60-70% of patients with this disease and is located in the domain acting as an inhibitor. It increases the enzymatic activity of JAK2 kinase and induces intensified sensitivity of cells to cytokines. Identification of mutations in the JAK2 gene has made it possible to describe the molecular pathogenesis of myeloproliferative syndromes, which has enabled more accurate diagnosis and assisted in effective treatment. The significant similarity of the clinical, laboratory and morphological features of myeloproliferative syndromes (including essential thrombocythaemia) in animals and humans suggests that common signalling pathways within the JAK2 gene may be involved in the development of these diseases.

The fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. ochraceous, A. terreus were found to be dominant based on percent frequency of each in blotter method in unsterilized and sterilized seeds 18.9–7.9, 15.0–3.9, 12.2–3.7, 10.1–1.7, respectively, and in agar plate technique 17.9–8.3, 15.1–9.5, 12.8–5, 7.9.7–6.7, respectively. These species showed reduction in terms of weight loss, germination and protein content in pathogenicity testing. Essential oil extracted by hydrodistillation from fruits of Cuminum cyminum L. was evaluated against the most common occurring funi such as A. flavus and A. niger as well as the insect species C. chinensis and the oil exhibited high toxicity. The oil killed the tested fungi and showed thermostable nature at its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 400 ppm. The oil safely preserved pea seeds up to 120 days at 0.50 (1,000 ppm) and 0.76 ml (1,500 ppm) in polyethylene and jute bags of 500 ml capacity containing 400 g seeds separately. There were no changes in organoleptic appereance of food seeds during storage. The oil has beneficial effect on number of visible nodule formation and shoot and root dry biomass of 15-day-old plants in comparison to control sets. The cumin oil was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Introduction. Cladosporium is one of the most abundant genera of environmental fungi worldwide and a very common respiratory allergen. To-date, many C. cladosporoides infections have been identified. Risk factors for C. cladosporioides infection are primarily injuries, metabolic disorders, organ transplantation and autoimmune diseases, among others. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the type of pharmacodynamic interactions between fluconazole and some selected essential oils: orange, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit, in an in vitro study against C. cladosporioides. Materials and method. Experiments were carried out using the plate cultivation method. Fluconazole was tested against C. cladosporioides at concentrations ranging from 0.05–3.3 mg / ml, and the activity of essential oils added to PDA medium at concentrations ranging from 1–30%. The dose-effect curves for the collected results were determined with by the log- probit method. Isobolographic analysis of the results allowed determining the type of interactions between fluconazole and the tested essential oils. Results. Lemon essential oil was the most active, and in a concentration of 1% it inhibited the growth of C. cladosporioides by 21%. Isobolographic analysis showed that the combination of fluconazole with orange and grapefruit essential oil had an additive interaction, and with mandarin and lemon – an additive interaction with a tendency to synergy in the plate culture test for C. cladosporioides. Conclusions. The use of isobolographic analysis can contribute to the introduction of natural substances with the desired activities into the pharmacotherapy of many infections and diseases. The use of natural substances can also help to reduce the number of side-effects caused by conventional and standard therapies.

Lemon verbena is cultivated mainly due to the lemon-like aroma emitted from its leaves that are utilized for most purposes. The chemical composition of the essential oil of lemon verbena was analyzed by GC/MS in July at pre flowering, in September at full flowering and in end of October at post flowering period. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil, extracted from Lippia citriodora was tested against laboratory control strains belonging to the American Type Culture Collection (Maryland, USA) four Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria using the disc diffusion test. Antioxidant activity of the sample was determined by 1,1-diphenil-2- -picrly-hydrazil (DPPH) assay. Well-known antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol were used as standard. Results showed, among different harvest periods high fresh and dry herbage and dry leaf yields per plant were obtained from full flowering stage. Harvest periods were found to have a significant effect on the content of essential oil and the highest amounts of limonene, neral and geranial and measured as 31.15, 11.92 and 15.53%, respectively at full flowering stage. In all samples, the main constituents were limonene, neral and geranial constituting 46.03%–58.59% of the total essential oil yield depend on development stages. Lemon verbena essential oil was found to have antibacterial activity especially against Gram (+) microorganisms. In DPPH system, the moderate radical scavenging activity was exhibited. Therefore, L. citriodora has potential to be used as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in food processing.

In the present work, we report the results of a spin trapping ESR study of four essential oils widely used for skin care products such as creams and bath salts. The studied essential oils are Rosmarini aetheroleum (rosemary), Menthae piperitae aetheroleum (mint), Lavandulae aetheroleum (lavender), and Thymi aetheroleum (thyme). Fenton reaction in the presence of ethanol was used to generate free radicals. The N-tert- -butyl-α-phenylnitrone (PBN) was used as a spin trap. In the Fenton reaction, the rosemary oil had the lowest effect on radical adduct formation as compared to the reference Fenton system. Since essential oils are known to be lipid soluble, we also conducted studies of essential oils in Fenton reaction in the presence of lipids. Two model lipids were used, namely 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn- -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). The obtained results suggested that in the presence of DOPC lipids, the •OH and PBN/•CHCH3(OH) radicals are formed in both phases, that is, water and lipids, and all the studied essential oils affected the Fenton reaction in a similar way. Whereas, in the DPPC system, the additional type of PBN/X (aN = 16.1 G, aH = 2.9 G) radical adduct was generated. DFT calculations of hyperfi ne splittings were performed at B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)/EPR-II level of theory for the set of c-centered PBN adducts in order to identify PBN/X radical.

In the study, the influence of distillation time as well as distillation apparatus on the chemical composition and quality of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil were investigated. Two different types of distillation apparatuses: Deryng (popular in Poland) and Clevenger-type (recommended by European Pharmacopoeia) were used for the isolation of the essential oil from dried lavender flowers (Lavandulae flos). Moreover, different distillation times (2, 3 and 4 hours) were also applied. The chemical composition of the isolated oils, determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), revealed the dominance of linalool (11.55–17.19%) and linalyl acetate (12.84–16.78%) in the all analyzed samples. Other important constituents were: caryophyllene oxide (5.66–7.35%), lavandulyl acetate (4.64–5.40%) and borneol (4.62–5.51%). On the basis of the obtained data it was proved that the distillation time and distillation apparatus affect the amounts of some constituents in the lavender oil.

In the framework of the performed studies, the antibacterial activity of the following fungicides was evaluated: Miedzian 50 WG (active substance - a.s. 50% copper oxychloride), Ridomil MZ Gold 68 WG (a.s. 3.8% metalaxyl-M and 64%, mancozeb), Euparen Multi 50 WG (a.s. 50% tolylfluanid), Captan 80 WG [a.s. 80% N-(captan)], Dithane Neotec 75 WG (a.s. 75% mancozeb). The evaluation also concerned the essential oils: lavender, sage, lemon balm, clove, and a preparation based on thyme oil (BioZell). Each preparation and compound was tested against the following bacterial pathogens: Erwinia amylovora, Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina, X. arboricola pv. juglandis, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, Agrobacterium tumefaciens (presently Rhizobium radiobacter). Each preparation and compound was tested at a concentration of 1,000 ppm of active substance. Copper oxychloride was also tested at a concentration of 1,500 ppm. Among the tested fungicides, metalaxyl-M with mancozeb, mancozeb alone, and copper oxychloride inhibited all of the tested strains of pathogenic bacteria. Tolylfluanid did not inhibit any of the bacteria used. Out of the investigated essential oils, the strongest inhibitors of bacteria were: sage, cloves, and BioZell. The protective activity of the above mentioned fungicides was also evaluated in vivo. They were assessed against fire blight on apple blossoms and pear fruitlets, against bacterial canker on sweet cherry fruitlets, and against crown gall on sunflower seedlings (the test plant). All fungicides were applied at the same concentrations as those in the in vitro tests. Only copper oxychloride was found to show protective activity against the studied diseases. This result indicates that the antibacterial properties of the other fungicides did not correspond with their activity on the plant organs used in the in vivo experiment.

Opis:
Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is simple and inexpensive sample preparation procedure which can be applied for the isolation/fractionation of essential oil compounds from wide variety of samples, such as foodstuffs, biological and environmental. Due to the complex nature of the examined matrices and frequently low concentration level of target components, analytical procedures require the use of initial sample preparation stage. The paper shows the possibility of essential oil components fractionation from different plant materials using SPE method. The results presented in this paper shows that the proposed SPE procedure allows for easy and total fractionation of essential oil constituents (especially low-molecular oxygen compounds) from the sample matrix.

Leather products provide an ideal environment for microbial growth. In order to prevent the appearance and spread of various types of microorganisms, it is treated with selected biocides and even essential oils. The aim of this paper was to investigate the antifungal activity of selected essential oils applied to finished chromium tanned leather which is intended for leather fancy products. Antifungal activity was evaluated according to the PN-EN 14119: 2005 standard. Four finished chromium tanned leathers were tested, each of which was soaked in the following essential oils: tea tree essential oil at a concentration of 1, 2 and 5% and thyme essential oil at concentration of 1, 2 and 5%. The results obtained indicated that leather finishing with thyme essential oil showed the antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, Chaetomium globosum and Candida albicans strains. The application of 5% thyme essential oil to leather samples inhibited the growth of all strains tested. Using tea tree essential oil on leather samples showed a antimicrobial effect only against Candida albicans. The application of essential oils in the leather finishing process may be an alternative to biocides used in the tanning industry.

This paper comprises two parts. The first part is an introduction to Auriol’s moderate conceptualism, as it is presented in his Commentary on Book II of the Sentences, distinction 9, question 2, article 1. The second part is an edition of the text. In the introduction, I focus on Auriol’s use of the noetic tool of connotation. My thesis, in particular, is that connotation is a necessary prerequisite to his moderate conceptu alism. To this purpose, the first part of this introduction will be devoted to a brief presentation of Auriol’s conceptualism. In the second part, Auriol’s theory of essential predication will be presented. In the third part, I will present my claim that Auriol’s theory of essential predication can only be made sense of when read against the background of his theory of connotation as applied to intellectual cognition. Finally, I will offer a collation of Auriol’s Commentary on Book II of the Sentences, dis tinction 9, question 2, article 1, obtained by collating eight manuscripts, which hand down Auriol’s text, that is, Firenze, Biblioteca nazionale centrale, ms. Opis:
Summary Galium aparine L. (clivers, goosegrass) (Rubiaceae) is used in folk medicine as diuretic and medicinal plant alleviating different dermatoses as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and improves the immune system. So far, scientific studies have shown as a main constituents: iridoids (mainly asperuloside), flavonoids (luteolin, chrysoeriol, apigenin and quercetin derivatives), numerous of phenolic acids and phytosterols. Previous studies confirmed antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of clivers. The aim of this work was to investigate the chemical profile of essential oil isolated from G. aparine collected in Poland. The essential oil was extracted from the herb of G. aparine by hydrodistillation in Deryng-type apparatus and the volatile constituents were identified by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 0,1 ml of essential oil (3,33 ml/kg) was obtained from the of G. aparine herb, in which 74 volatile ingredients were identified (100%). According to GC/MS analysis 9-diazo-9H-fluorene (31,93%), palmitic acid and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (8,89%) were as major constituents. 9-diazo-9H-fluorene is very rare in the plant world, previously identified only in Bidens pilosa. Terpene compounds represented 22,31% of essential oil, including 15 sesquiterpenes (18,23%), 6 monoterpenes (2,00%) and 1 diterpene (3,08%). The other active ingredients of the oil include: phytol, β-ionone, anethole, spatulenol, α-cadinol, phenylethyl alcohol, eugenol, methyleugenol, α-carvacrol, α-caryophyllene, α-terpineol, isoaromadendren epoxide, carvone, linalool, santalol, β-farnesene and eucalyptole. The ingredients of the essential oil are multi-directional activity - anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-cancer, antiproliferative, effect on angiogenesis, and also have occlusive properties. Quantify and a number of ingredients of the essential oil have proven that it may be one of the bioactive important fractions of the clivers herb and partly justify the traditional use of G. aparine.
Badania naukowe potwierdziły aktywność przeciwdrobnoustrojową, antyoksydacyjną i cytotoksyczną surowca.

Opis:
Processes of colonization of biotic and abiotic surfaces and biofilm formation depend inter alia on hydrophobic properties of Candida spp. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of tea tree, thyme and clove essential oils on hydrophobic properties of environmental and clinical Candida isolates. The relative cell surface hydrophobicity of strains tested was high, and ranged from 68.7% to 91.2%, with the highest value for a C. rugosa food-borne strain. The effectiveness of essential oils was diversified and depended on the type of essential oil, concentration and yeast strain. Statistically significant decrease of hydrophobicity indexes was observed after application of tea tree oil for C. krusei, clove oil for C. albicans reference strain, and all essential oils tested for C. rugosa. Only in the case of C. famata food-borne strain and C. albicans clinical isolate, solely used essential oils did not affect their hydrophobic properties. To determine the interactions of essential oils, their mixtures (1 MIC:1 MIC, 1 MIC:2 MIC and 2 MIC:1 MIC) were applied. Generally, essential oils used in combinations influenced yeast's hydrophobic properties much more than applied separately. The essential oils' mixtures reduced hydrophobicity of Candida yeasts in the range of 8.2 to 45.1%, depending on combination and strain. The interaction indexes of essential oils used in combinations predominantly indicate their additive effect. The application of tea tree, thyme and clove essential oils, especially in combinations, decreases hydrophobicity of the tested Candida isolates with implications of a probable advantageous limitation of their ability to colonize the food production industry environment.

Origanum dubium is a valuable wild oregano species of the natural flora of Antalya, Turkey. In this study, we extracted essential oil (EO) by hydro-distillation of the aerial parts of selected O. dubium chemotype with highest EO content, and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Carvacrol was the primary component (85.9%) among 24 different compounds in the EO. The volatile test showed minimum inhibitory effect of the EO against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli var. fuscans, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, at 309, 303, 318, 254, and 901 µL/mL, respectively. A 1-hour treatment of bean and tomato seeds in the volatile phase of the EO effectively sterilized the seeds from bacterial pathogens without inhibiting their germination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the potential for the use of O. dubium EO as a seed protectant against bean and tomato seed-borne bacterial pathogens.

The ability to compete on numerous markets today depends on access to technological standards. When standards are protected by standard essential patents (SEP), a license to use such SEPs will be required. There have been numerous disputes in various jurisdictions over refusals to license SEPs. Most recently, disputes concern access to SEPs by the manufacturers of components. Some SEP holders deny access to their standard essential patents to component manufacturers and prefer to license end product producers. This practice has become a highly contentious issue around the world. In particular, manufacturers of components who are denied access to SEPs claim that such refusals amount to violations of competition rules. The author examines this highly contested practice is an attempt to show when denying access to an SEP license could harm competition.

A channelized instantaneous frequency and a local group delay are used in order to replacement in the same manner as formulated by Kodera et al. [1, 2]. Additionally, new representations: a channelized instantaneous bandwidth and a local group duration are used in order to remove some part of irrelevant energy. A newly obtained energy distribution called essential spectrogram is highly concentrated and signal mono-components are precisely localized in the time-frequency domain.

Opis:
Effect of enzymatic pretreatment before hydrodistillation process on yield and composition of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil was studied. Results obtained by using two selected commercial enzymes applied in food and beverage industry were compared. Control process with non-enzymatic pretreatment in analogous conditions was also performed for proper interpretation of results. Application of gas chromatography with mass selective detector (GC-MS) enabled analysis and comparison of essential oils composition. Moreover, total phenolic content (TPC) was determined spectrophotometrically in post-processing hydrolates, which are also valuable products e.g. for cosmetic applications. Modifications of isolation process by pretreatment with selected enzymes resulted in significant increase in essential oil yields in comparison to conventional hydrodistillation and control process with non-enzymatic pretreatment in analogous conditions. No substantial changes in the composition of obtained essential oils were observed. In post-processing hydrolates higher values of total phenolic content (TPC) were found both after enzymatic and non-enzymatic pretreatment.

Opis:
A current problem in candidiasis treatment is increasing resistance to azoles, which are often prescribed to patients. The study underlines the high resistance of yeasts to fluconazole, which achieved high MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) values both alone and in combination with essential oils (EOs). Antifungal activity of Hyssopus officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis and Rosmarinus officinalis EOs was determined against 13 clinical isolates of Candida albicans and reference strain Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The synergistic effect was investigated for the combination of itraconazole and fluconazole with Hyssopus officinalis and Thymus vulgaris EOs. Based on the fractional inhibitory concentration index, the synergistic effect was achieved in all of the samples exposed to itraconazole with Hyssopus officinalis (FICI 0.3±0.06). On the other side, the additive effect was proven in use of itraconazole with Thymus vulgaris (FICI 0.75±0.35) and fluconazole with both EOs tested (FICI 0.81±0.19; 0.88±0.57) This study shows the importance of monitoring the synergistic effect of antifungals combined with EOs, because it is a possible solution for reducing the resistance and improving the disease prognosis.

The antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant, antihyperlipidaemic, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Satureja khuzestanica (Lamiaceae) have been investigated in numerous studies. The antifungal effects of S. khuzestanica essential oil (SKJO) in immunosuppressed rats suffering from oral candidiasis were investigated. A fungal suspension with a density of 3×108 CFU/ml was taken from the isolate of a case with acute vaginitis. In order to achieve a medicinal formulation, accurate twice the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of SKJO and 10 times MIC of nystatin was used with 0.8% agar as a base material. In this study, 35 rats divided into 5 groups each of 7 were used. The assessment of level of infection and specification of the effects of treatment were performed using microbiological and histopathological methods as well as clinical examinations. Our results show that carvacrol is the main compound of SKJ essential oil. Lesions completely disappeared in both treatment groups (SKJO and nystatin) after 8 days of treatment. Furthermore, in groups treated with SKJO and nystatin, the quantities of mean logarithm of colony forming unit (CFU) were 85.62% and 90.62%, respectively, in comparison with placebo group. Also, histopathological properties suggested no infection in groups who had clean and normal dorsal tongue mucosa. Using SKJO with twice accuracy it was concluded that MIC in immunosuppressed rats was quite successful in a time of a week and equal with that of a nystatin treatment with an accuracy of 10 times the MIC.

Let us assume that the expression A is a segment of the expression B. When shall we say that A is irremovable or occurs in B essentially? We shall do it, if we can neither remove A from B nor replace A with A', not influencing upon important properties of B. On the other hand, when shall we say that the occurrence A in B is essential? We shall do it, if we can transform B into B' changing no <> properties of B. Let us say it more precisely. Let us assume - as concerns expressions x, y, x' and y' - that: (a) x occurs in y; (b) the only structural difference between y and y' is that x does not occur in y', or x' occurs in y instead of x. Then: x occurs in y inessentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is the same as y with respect to p. Correspondingly: x occurs in y essentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is different as y with respect to p. The occurrence x in y may be essential or inessential with respect to syntactic, semantic or pragmatic properties of y. In my paper, I discuss a variety of detailed concepts of the (in)essential occurrence of expressions in another expressions with respect to semantic properties of these expressions, i.e. with respect to semantic category, logical value, denotation and connotation. I also discuss some philosophical and methodological implications of presented solutions of the problem.

Opis:
Introduction. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common pathogen causing allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. The pathogenic capacity of Aspergillus fumigatus is related to its thermal tolerance and the small size of the spores which enables transfer to the respiratory tract. In the case of fungal diseases, their treatment is based on fungicidal antibiotics, such as fluconazole. Due to the growing problem of drug resistance, new therapeutic solutions are sought, especially of natural origin. Essential oils, due to their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory properties, constitute interesting research material in the fight against mould. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the type of pharmacodynamic interactions between fluconazole and selected essential oils: lemon, orange, tangerine, and grapefruit in an in vitro study against Aspergillus fumigatus. Isobolographic analysis of the results allowed determining the type of interactions between fluconazole and the tested essential oils. Results. According to the research results, a IC50 dose of fluconazole versus Aspergillus fumigatus IC50 = 1.87±0.88mg/ml. The most active essential oil was lemon oil, which at the concentration of 4% in medium completely inhibited the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus. Tangerine essential oil is the least active against A. fumigatus. Isobolographic analysis of the interactions between fluconazole and essential oils showed additive interactions for the combination of fluconazole with lemon, orange and grapefruit ols, and an additive interaction with a tendency to synergism for the combination of fluconazole with tangerine oil. Conclusions. Isobographic analysis can contribute to the introduction of natural substances into the therapy of many diseases.

Opis:
Nowadays, safety of chemical preservatives has been questioned by a big number of consumers. Traditionally used preservatives often cause skin irritation and lead to allergenic reactions. Growing demands for more natural and preservative-free cosmetics promoted an idea of the replacement of synthetic preservatives with essential oils (EOs) of antimicrobial properties. The antimicrobial effect of essential oil depends on content, concentration and interactions between the main active compounds. Effective preservatives should be characterized by a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity at a minimum concentration. Formulations containing both types of preservatives: essential oil and a synthetic one have been tested and proposed as a compromise that allows for reducing concentration of both components due to their synergistic activity. Although most essential oils are regarded as safe, some of them may cause risk of contact allergy or phototoxic reaction. A well balanced risk-benefit assessment of essential oils is one of the great challenges for scientists or health policy authorities. This paper presents current state of knowledge on essential oils focused on their antimicrobial properties, the assessment of their efficacy and safety as cosmetic preservatives.

The current research was conducted to determine the effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), and French lavender (Lavandula stoechas L.) essential oils and their combinations on serum, bone and excreta mineral content and bone breaking strength in broilers. A total of 640 day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to eight treatment groups with five replicates each. The experimental diets were prepared by adding essential oils to the control diet as follows: control (0 mg/kg), thyme essential oil (50 mg/kg), rosemary essential oil (50 mg/kg), French lavender essential oil (50 mg/kg), thyme + rosemary (25+25 mg/kg), thyme + French lavender (25+25 mg/kg), rosemary + French lavender (25+25 mg/kg) and thyme + rosemary + French lavender (16,7+16,7+16,7 mg/kg). No difference was shown between the treatment groups in serum content of Ca, Mg, P or Zn (P > 0,05). Tibia Ca, Mg and P contents were statistically significant (P < 0,01), while tibia breaking strength was not significant (P > 0,05). Excreta Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, P and Zn contents were significantly affected by the dietary treatments (P < 0,01), but excreta Cu content was not statistically significant (P > 0,05). The addition of thyme essential oil to the diet was effective in increasing tibia Ca, P and Mg content. The essential oils used, especially their binary mixtures, can be effective in reducing the amount of minerals excreted in the faeces.

Abstract: Dipsacus fullonum L. syn. D. sylvestris is a biennial plant from the Dipsacaceae family. It grows in Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. It has been used in folk medicine mainly to treat Lyme disease. This study was undertaken to identify and compare the components of the essential oils from dried and fresh roots, which are usually applied as medicinal agents, as well as those of the essential oils from dried and fresh leaves, used less frequently. The essential oils from the Dipsacus fullonum leaves and roots were analysed by the GC and GC-MS analysis. 18 components were identified in the essential oil from the fresh leaves, whereas 37 were recognised in the oil from the dried leaves; 10 components were identified in the essential oil from the fresh roots and 40 in that from the dried roots. Phytol was the main component in the essential oil from the leaves, whereas n-hexadecanoic acid was predominant in the roots. The α -amylase inhibition has been proven for methanolic extracts of D. fullonum leaves and roots. The strongest activity was demonstrated by the extract from fresh leaves of D. fullonum and showed an effect about one hundred times weaker than acarbose.

The medicinal and culinary properties of Angelica archangelica L. have been known and valued since the Middle Ages. Ingredients of essential oil and coumarins found in this plant are to a large degree responsible for its pharmacological activity. This study is a review of the literature of the most important biologically active compounds present in herbal raw materials: root (rhizome with roots) and angelica fruits. Research shows that the content of individual compounds of the essential oil and coumarin fraction is variable, which may point to a large intraspecific variation. Therefore, these compounds may be good markers for identifying taxa or chemotypes in chemotaxonomic research valuable for the herbal medicine and pharmaceutical industry.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antifungal properties of sage oil, clove oil and basil oil against Fusarium solani isolated from white asparagus spears (Asparagus officinalis L.). A dual culture plate method was used for the assessment of the inhibitory effects of essential oils and volatile components on mycelium, inoculated into a PDA medium. The culturing process was conducted for 9 days at a temperature of 26oC and the fungal linear growth was measured every 1–3 days. The conidial germination of the fungus in the presence of oils was evaluated by microscope method. The results show differences in the fungistatic activity of oils, dependent on the type and dose of the oil. Generally the oils had a higher impact against the fungal spores than on mycelium growth of F. solani, however the type of oil and dose determined different amounts. The conidial germination was most inhibited by the basil oil (98.9% maximum inhibition), followed by the clove and sage oils at a concentration of 4% (respectively 89.9% and 85.4% maximum inhibition). In contrast, the oils had much less of an impact on the linear mycelial growth of F. solani. Use of the highest dose of clove oil reduced the linear growth of mycelium by 29.9%, sage oil by 14.8% and basil oil by 4%. Furthermore, gas metabolites limited the growth of F. solani. The degree of inhibition of mycelium amounted to 17.1% for clove oil, 15.5% for sage oil and 9.3% for basil oil used in the maximum concentration 4.0%. Based on these results, clove oil was the greatest inhibitor of mycelial growth and sporulation of F. solani.

Effect of the essential oils addition on the rate of bacterial cellulose surface overgrowth by mold fungi. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of protecting films made of bacterial cellulose with essential oils against overgrowth by mold fungi. The cellulose film produced by microorganisms forming a pellicle called SCOBY was modified by introducing into the cellulose pulp essential oils: cinnamon and manuka. Samples of the protected film were treated with mold fungi: Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma viride. On the basis of the tests conducted, the rate of film overgrowth by mold fungi and the effectiveness criteria of cellulose film protection with essential oils were determined. The addition of cinnamon oil protected the film against the growth of Aspergillus niger and Chaetomium globosum fungi. Manuka oil slowed down the growth of Chaetomium globosum microorganisms on the surface of the bacterial cellulose film sample, but did not protect the samples from overgrowth. The essential oils tested were ineffective against the fungus Trichoderma viride.

Przedmiotem badań było ustalenie skuteczności zabezpieczenia folii wytworzonej z celulozy bakteryjnej olejkami eterycznymi przed porastaniem grzybami pleśniowymi. Folia celulozowa, wytworzona przez mikroorganizmy tworzące konsorcjum zwane SCOBY została poddana modyfikacji poprzez wprowadzenie do pulpy celulozowej olejków eterycznych: cynamonowego i z manuka. Próbki zabezpieczonej folii zostały poddane działaniu grzybów pleśniowych: Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger i Trichoderma viride. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań określono stopień oceny porastania folii przez grzyby pleśniowe i kryteria skuteczności zabezpieczenia folii celulozowej olejkami eterycznymi. Dodatek olejku cynamonowego zabezpieczył folię przed rozwojem grzybów Aspergillus niger i Chaetomium globosum.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the content of essential oils in pine needles in 3 canopy zones (lower, middle and upper) of model trees, for 3 youngest needle cohorts (1, 2 and 3 years old). The research revealed a clear increase in the content of essential oils from the lower through the middle to the upper part of the crown. The lowest oil content was found in 3-year-old needles (0.40%), while 1-year and 2-year old needles contained 0.48 and 0.49% of oil, respectively.
Najmniejszą zawartość olejku stwierdzono w igliwiu 3-letnim (0,40%), natomiast igliwie 1-roczne i 2-letnie zawierało odpowiednio 0,48 i 0,49%.

The paper includes an analysis of selected educational publications addressed to children who learn to read, as well as to learners who develop their knowledge about language. The aim of the analysis is to answer the following questions: What linguistic phatic rituals are present in the analysed texts? How can cognitive, linguistic and social distance be minimalised or maximalised among the participants of an educational discourse? A descriptive approach presented in this paper refers to linguistic and stylistic manners of forming a phatic community, first of all in communication with children who learn to read and with learners who can read on their own. The analysis intends to indicate the means that serve to develop a phatic community and to capture the characteristic features for the phatic rituals due to the recipient’s status.

Opis:
Footwear, especially those often and intensively used, provides an ideal environment for microbial growth. An appropriate high temperature and moisture content inside it enhance bacterial and fungal colonization by microbes. These microorganisms can be potentially pathogenic to human health and responsible for destruction of shoes materials from which the parts inside the shoe are made. In previous studies it has been shown that the addition of essential oils of antiseptic activity at leather finishing operations allows a leather to get antimicrobial properties. The aim of this paper is to assess the durability of antimicrobial effect of leather fatliquored with the addition of cinnamon, thyme and oregano essential oils at concentration of 5% per leather weight. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated according to guidelines of PN-EN ISO 20645:2006 “Textile fabrics – determination of antibacterial activity – Agar diffusion plate test” after 36-month storage. The obtained results have indicated that leathers under investigations show antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. aureus and C. albicans strains even 3 years after fatliquoring. The use of natural bioactive substances such as cinnamon, thyme and oregano oils at concentration of 5% per leather weight in the leather finishing process may be an alternative to biocides used in the tanning industry as well it can improve hygienic properties of shoes, internal parts of which are made of such finished leathers.

Opis:
Aspergillus parasiticus is one of the most common fungi which contaminates peanuts by destroying peanut shells before they are harvested and the fungus produces aflatoxins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activities of seventeen essential oils on the growth of the aflatoxigenic form of A. parasiticus in contaminated peanuts from commercial outlets in Georgia. The agar dilution method was used to test the antifungal activity of essential oils against this form of A. parasiticus at various concentrations: 500; 1,000; 1,500; 2,000; 2,500 ppm. Among the seventeen essential oils tested, the antifungal effect of cinnamon, lemongrass, clove and thyme resulted in complete inhibition of mycelial growth. Cinnamon oil inhibited mycelial growth at ≥ 1,000 ppm, lemongrass and clove oils at ≥ 1,500 ppm and thyme at 2,500 ppm. However, cedar wood, citronella, cumin and peppermint oils showed partial inhibition of mycelial growth. Eucalyptus oil, on the other hand, had less antifungal properties against growth of A. parasiticus, irrespective of its concentration. Our results indicate that the aflatoxigenic form of A. parasiticus is sensitive to selected essential oils, especially cinnamon. These findings clearly indicate that essential oils may find a practical application in controlling the growth of A. parasiticus in stored peanuts.

Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is an infective agent and the main resourceful factor of chronic, active ot type B gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tumors. Nowadays, pharmological treatment of H. pylori infections attract attention beside antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study is to analyse the chemical composition of the essential oils of Thymus capitatus and the antimicrobial activity against H. pylori. Aerial parts of wild growing plant materials were collected during flowering stage from three different locations. Essential oil composition analyses were performed simultaneously by GC-FID and GC-MS systems. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil were tested by broth dilution method. The thymol percentage was determined as more than half of the essential oil composition of Thymus capitatus-Yedidalga (51.9%) and Thymus capitatus –Yıldırım (57.1%); however, the composition of thymol was 47.2% followed by 15.1% (p-cymene), 10.0% (-terpinene) and 5.7% (carvacrol) for Thymus capitatus-Boğaz/Girne.The essential oil from Thymus capitatus- Boğaz/Girne showed the lowest MIC and MBC values and the strongest bactericidal activity against H. pylori compared to the other tested essential oils. Bactericidal efficacy of essential oil of Thymus capitatus on H. pylori could have been affected due to the varied rates of major compounds. Thymus capitatus essential oil could be an alternative way for the treatment of H. pylori infections.

Wulkanizaty modyfikowane dodatkiem olejku tymiankowego, goździkowego lub geraniowego wykazywały odporność na działanie grzybów pleśniowych, natomiast wulkanizaty modyfikowane dodatkiem olejku herbacianego, mandarynkowego lub cytronelowego charakteryzowały się zwiększoną bakteriobójczością.
Natural rubber compounds filled with carbon black or calcium carbonate and crosslinked using dicumyl peroxide, were modified by addition of various essential oils with biocidal action confirmed in the literature. It was found that the type of essential oil and filler used determines the degree of crosslinking and mechanical properties of the vulcanizates. The resistance against mould fungi was shown by vulcanizates modified with thyme, clove or geranium oil, whereas bactericidal action was observed in cases of tea tree, mandarin or lemongrass oil used as modifying agents.

The article attempts to present essentiality – one of the concepts used most frequently by Witkacy – as a performative category. The artist was aware that essentiality would not have the final form in the dictionary of intellectual concepts, that it could not be fixed within stable definitions, but continued his efforts to push the boundaries of the human mind as far as possible. The paper analyses Witkacy’s epistemological tactics using Anna Krajewska’s dramatic theory of literature, which draws, among other things, on the achievements of performative discourse. Seen in this perspective, Witkacy’s ‘essential conversations’ can be regarded as dramatic forms which establish essentiality in constant motion and give it the character of a processual event – of something uncertain in a state of unreadiness, something attempted.

The growth of Cunninghamella echinulata on raw glycerol as sole carbon source was positively affected by the presence of essential oil (EO) of orange in the growth medium. However, significant alterations in the fatty acid composition were observed since the biosynthesis of PUFA was inhibited, especially in the late fermentation steps. Refereeing to the ratios ∆9C18:1/C18:0, ∆9,12C18:2/∆9C18:1 and ∆6,9,12C18:3/∆9,12C18:2 used as indices for ∆9, ∆12 and ∆6 desaturase activity, respectively, we suggest that in the presence of EO, the activity of ∆9 desaturase involved in the desaturation of stearic acid was significantly increased. During this process both ∆12 and ∆6 desaturases involved in the desaturation of oleic and linoleic acids, respectively, decreased. We conclude that EO could be used for the in vivo modification of microbial lipids.

The yield, composition and fungicidal activity of essential oils obtained from fennel fruits cultivated in Poland (FEOPOL) and Egypt (FEO-EG) were compared. The influence of the duration of hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus on the essential oil yield was studied. The composition of the fennel essential oils was determined by GC-MS method. Studies have shown that FEO-POL and FEO-EG are two distinct chemotypes, which differ in yield and composition. The fennel fruits cultivated in Poland contained 4.14% of essential oil with trans-anethole as a main component. The plant material from Egypt was characterised by low content of essential oil (1.32%) with a predominant share of estragole. The fungicidal activity was tested in vitro against ten species of pathogenic fungi. The best result for FEO-POL was achieved against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Botrytis cinerea. Antifungal activity of FEO-EG against tested fungi was weak or none.

It seems that essential oils can be a good ingredient in effective preparations against Dermanyssus gallinae. Dermanyssus affects animal health leading to financial losses and bird welfare issues. Collected mites were treated with various essential oils in four (20, 50, 80 and 100%) concentrations at a dose of 0.28 mg/cm2. The direct toxicity of the essential oils, mineral oil and spinosad to D. gallinae was tested in the laboratory. Eucalyptus oil was the most toxic essential oil in all concentrations to D. gallinae (87.6 - 97.6% mortality at all four concentrations), while geranium, pine and rosemary oils showed mortality rates of 14.2 - 68.2%. High mortality after 48 hours of contact was also recorded for the oil of cloves at 80% dilution (85.1% mortality), lavender 100% (94.2% mortality). Similarly, the thyme essential oil produced 83.5 - 93.2% mortality in three concentrations: 50, 80 and 100%. The mineral oil was the least effective oil against mites. Spinosad showed high effectiveness against D. gallinae.

The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of extracted essential oils in some aromatic plants were determined. Phytochemical screening was conducted using standard qualitative techniques, while the essential oils was extracted from the Citrus limon linn leaf, Vitex trifolia seed and Cananga odorata by modified steam distillation apparatus. Furthermor, the plant materials were tested using Antioxidant activity and Antimicrobial activity test. Citrus limon linn produced large volume essential oil (1.4 ml), Vitex trifola (0.7 ml) and Cananga odorata (0.5 ml) after 3hours of steam distillation. Antioxidant activities test using DPPH method reveals that all the essential oil determined showed positive effect, but the oil extracted from Citrus limon linn leaf could be a better antioxidant than that of Vitex tifolia and Cananga odorat when compared to commercial Ascorbic acid. The antioxidant activities of the essential oils of different plants under investigation showed a variation which may be as a result of the difference in their chemical compositions. Antimicrobial activities showed that all the essential oils were inhibited on the entire five microorganisms being used. However, Citrus limonlinn showed highest inhibition on the organisms (E. coli, S. typhi C. Kleb, P. avengunosa and S. aureus) compared to Cananga odorata and Vitex trifolia.

Opis:
This research aimed to measure the impact of provenance on the yield, chemical profile and antimicrobial activity of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil (EO) collected from cultivated and wild plants from two different regions in Morocco (Fez and Figuig). The chemical composition analysis was accomplished utilizing the GC-MS techniques. Sixteen compounds were identified in the EO of both samples, dominated by 1,8-cineole (32.18%), camphor (16.20%) and α-pinene (15.40%) in cultivated type. The α-pinene (51.19) presents the majority compound in the rosemary samples collected from the wild populations. The antimicrobial activity was investigated by using the broth dilution methods against yeast, four bacterial strains and two molds. Rosemary aerial part provided EO with the highest yield and comes from Figuig. The GC-MS analysis demonstrated the existence of two chemotypes of oils: α-pinene as well as 1,8-cineole/camphor/α-pinene. Both EOs showed good antimicrobial activity against all microbial strains. The essential oil produced by Fez plants was the most effective against the selected microorganisms having MIC values of 0.315–2.5 mg/L.

The insecticidal properties of essential oil derived via the hydro-distillation method from aerial parts of Artemisia judaica L. were tested against the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The repellent activity assay of essential oil against C. maculates adults indicated that in concentrations of 63.7, 31.9, 15.9, 8.0 or 4.0 μg/cm2, the oil reduced egg laying by 92.5, 86.0, 61.8, 42.7 and 12.5%, respectively. Also, the residual-film assay showed that after 72 hours of treatment, concentrations of 50 and 40% were highly effective against the C. maculates adults. The sub-lethal effects of essential oil were investigated on fecundity and F1 progany by exposing adult females to treated seeds. Both LC25 and LC50 of essential oil significantly reduced F1 progany production compared to the control. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS and the resulting oil piperitone (32.4%), camphor (20.6%) and (E)-ethyl cinnnamate (8.2%) were found to contain the major constituents of the oil. This provided the insecticidal properties of the essential oil against cowpea weevil.

Opis:
The author considers three groups of concepts of essence, defines them in the modified language of functional calculus and classes calculus, points out connections between them, analyses their difficulties and presents the concepts derived from "essence". These groups are as follows:1. Three non-essential concepts of "essence" (found in works by Arystoteles, M. A. Krąpiec, T. Czeżowski, A. B. Stępień), i.e.:(i) essence as any property of the object:∧ x ∧ I (I is the essence of x ≡ I x);(ii) essence as the necessary property of the object:∧ x ∧ I is the essence of x ≡ ∧ y [(x = y) → Iy] ;(iii) essence as all properties of the object:∧ x ∧ I I is the essence of x ≡ ∧ P [Px ≡ (P ∈ I) .2. One more essential concept of "essence" (Rev. J. Salamucha, and also: Arystoteles, St. Thomas Aquinas, K. Ajdukiewicz, A. B. Stępień), i.e. essence as the property «common» to all object of the given group (and only to these objects):∧ x ∧ I I is the essence of x as Z ≡ [(x ∈ Z) →/← Ix] .3. Two the most essential concepts of "essence" (K. Ajdukiewicz, T. Kotarbiński), i.e.:(i) the simple essence as a «common» and «characteristic» property (see 2.), from which the other important («characteristic») properties result:∧ x ∧ I ∧ Z ⟨I is the simple essence of x as Z ≡ [(x ∈ Z ≡ Ix] ∧ y ∧ PW [y ∈ Z) → Pwy] → (Iy → PWy) ⟩;(ii) the complex essence as the constitutive intension of a name:∧ x ∧ I ∧ Z ∧ P ∧ Q ⟨I is the complex essence of x as Z ≡ [(x ∈ Z) ≡ Ix] ∼ ∨ P ∧ Q {[Q = (I − P)] → ∧ y [(y ∈ Z ≡ Qy] ⟩.

Essential oil of Artemisia annua L. was investigated to find out its toxicity and physiological aspects on the slug Agriolimax agrestis, in controlled conditions (8±1°C, 75±5 RH and 14:10 LD). The slugs received different concentrations of essential oil treated radish leaves in methanol, while the control received methanol alone. LC10, LC30, LC50 and LC90 values were estimated at 4.67, 5.3, 5.81, 7.25%, respectively. The effect of the essential oil on some important enzymatic components like; cytochrome P450 monnooxygenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lipase, amylase and protease were significantly increased compared to the control. These results indicate that the plant Artemisia annua L. not only shows toxicity but also shows some irreversible effect on some important biochemical components and deserves further investigation.

Opis:
In an environment increasingly common finding is the presence of antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli. An alternative way to eliminate them can provide biodegradable and non-toxic substances, including essential oils. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of essential oils on environmental, antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli. The research material consisted of 10 isolated from the environment, antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli, including 8 glucuronidase-positive. Using the Mueller-Hinton medium was evaluated the sensitivity to antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, doxycycline, gentamycin, kanamycin, trimethoprim, tetracycline, streptomycin, nalidixic acid and sulfonamides. Using the platelet-cylinders diffusion method was assessed the sensitivity of the strains on essential oils: thyme, oregano, tea tree, lemongrass, lemon, and caraway, at concentrations of 1.5%; 1.0%; 0.5%, 0.25%. Based on the results, it was found that the tested strains of E. coli were resistant to at least half of the used antibiotics and 90% of them showed resistance to ampicillin, and amoxicillin. Also, the sensitivity of the strains to tested essential oils has been diverse. Only thyme oil in a concentration of 1.5% inhibited growth of 90% of the tested strains of E. coli. On the other hand, oregano oil in a concentration of 1.5% inhibited the development of 3 out of 10 tested strains. Oils of tea, lemongrass, lemon and caraway, at the mentioned concentrations have been not bactericidal against strains of Escherichia coli.

Opis:
Despite the reputation earned by aromatic and medicinal plants of Algeria, the chemical constituents of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil (EGEO) of Blida origin has not previously been investigated. Thus, the present study has been conducted for the determination of chemical constituents and different physico-chemical properties of the EGEO. Chemical composition of the EGEO, grown in Algeria, was analysed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The chemical components were identified on the basis of Retention Time and comparing with mass spectral database of standard compounds. Relative amounts of detected compounds were calculated on the basis of GC peak areas. Fresh leaves of E. globulus on steam distillation yielded 0.96 % (v/w) of essential oil whereas the analysis resulted in the identification of a total of 11 constituents, 1.8 cineole (85.8 %), α-pinene (7.2 %), and β-myrcene (1.5 %) being the main components. Other notable compounds identified in the oil were β-pinene, limonene, α-phellandrene, γ-terpinene, linalool, pinocarveol, terpinen-4-ol, and α-terpineol. The physical properties such as specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation and the chemical properties such as saponification value, acid number and iodine number of the EGEO were examined. The oil extracted has been analyzed to have 1.4602 - 1.4623 refractive index value, 0.918 - 0.919 specific gravity (sp.gr.), +9 - +10 optical rotation that satisfy the standards stipulated by European Pharmacopeia. All the physical and chemical parameters were in the range indicated by the ISO standards. Our findings will help to access the quality of the Eucalyptus oil which is important in the production of high value essential oils that will help to improve the economic condition of the community as well as the nation.

The practice of economic turnover provides a lot of examples when the company's proper activity is disturbed by one or more partners. Sometimes, there are situations when one partner, cannot communicate with the rest board and paralyses the company activity through various letters or submissions and start unnecessary legal proceedings by using all available public institutions and organisations of the judicature. In my article, I will try to define the term "important reasons "based on the current position of doctrine and judicature. Furthermore, I will try to determine the boundaries of the above topic. In my publication, I will also consider from what point of view it should judge the validity of the reasons for expulsion the partner from the partnership.

Spośród wyizolowanych mikroorganizmów zasiedlających chore rośliny pelargonii najczęściej występowały gatunki rodzajów: Phytophthora, Fusarium, Botrytis, Cylindrocladium, Alternaria i Cylindrocarpon.
Ornamental plants play an important role in human life. Plants positively influence the psyche and improve the well-being of people around them. They produce oxygen, provide a barrier to dust and noise, lower the temperature and increase air humidity, thereby positively impacting the microclimate. The unmatched appeal of pelargonium, ease of cultivation and care, abundance of flowering from spring to late autumn and its decorative qualities make it a universal application. The aim of the study was to isolate the microorganisms that inhabit the cuttings of pelargonium, identify fungal isolates, investigate the pathogenicity of selected isolates and evaluate the influence of certain essential oils (Carum carvi L. essential oils, Citrus limon L. essential oils, Citrus reticulatae aetheroleum essential oils, essential oil of tea tree ) in in vitro circumstances on the linear growth of the mycelium: Phytophthora cryptogea, Phytophthora nicotianae var. nicotianae. Previcur Energy 840 SL was used as a standard chemical protection. The most numerous isolated fungi were: Phytophthora, Botrytis, Cylindrocladium, Alternaria and Cylindrocarpon. The highest efficiency in relation to Phytophthora cryptogea characterized the Citrus limon L. essential oils (concentration 0.1% and 1%) and Carum carvi L. essential oil (concentration 1%).

Opis:
Chromium (Cr) is a micronutrient that occurs in the natural environment in different oxidation states. Natural compounds contain chromium in the +3 oxidation state, whereas chromic(VI) acid derivatives are industrial products with strong toxicity. Hexavalent chromium compounds can adversely affect the respiratory system and the gastrointestinal tract, cause skin changes, and exert carcinogenic, mutagenic, embryotoxic as well as teratogenic effects. Research indicates that both organic and inorganic trivalent chromium compounds improve carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. These compounds are found in many enzymes, and they influence antioxidant processes, regulation of immune responses, and the secretion of hormones and selected vitamins in the body. In animals, Cr has been found to increase fat-free body mass, improve reproductive parameters, enhance growth, increase feed conversion efficiency, boost immunity, and decrease mortality. It has been suggested that Cr supplements can intensify the effects of insulin, decrease the plasma levels of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), decrease triglyceride concentrations in the liver, and improve glucose tolerance, thus improving the performance and productivity of cattle in the perinatal period. Symptoms of chromium deficiency, including decreased feed intake, lower weight gains, reproductive disorders, and higher lipid levels, are observed in cattle fed diets that are low in this nutrient, and in animals that are exposed to considerable and prolonged stress. In ruminants, chromium supplementation is recommended during thermal stress, in the perinatal period, and during infections.

One thing we cannot do is failing to address the issue of ‘what next’? Where are we heading? What are our objectives on the horizon of dreams and not short-term solutions? Where is mankind heading as a whole? It is you economists and managers I am aiming my questions at. I am incapable of finding a clear answer but I sincerely hope to discover it in your dissertations (going beyond your master, doctorate and habilitation theses). Thanks to the brilliant paradigm, our civilisation has made achievements which it tends to forget. Mankind today is living more comfortably than ever before. I want to raise a question if we are conscious of the fact that our privileges should be shared by all inhabitants of our planet. I wish to reflect on the good of a man – what does a human need to be fulfilled in all dimensions, not in the mere material one. How do we conceive of the future organization and identity of mankind? I asked school principals: Is it good to allow the sexes to become alike, to see women become masculine and men effeminate? Is the contrast of the sexes vital to the preservation of the human race? Does the tension resulting from the diversification matter? I do not intend to present my own intuitions; my wish would be finding some answers in humanities. Sadly, doctorate and habilitation theses tend to focus on marginal issues. Why does contemporary theology differ so considerably from what the contemporary world, contemporary physics or mathematics deal with on a regular basis?

Opis:
Juniperus communis L. (Cupressaceae) is a plant widely cultivated in the Northern hemisphere. Juniper berries, the fruit of Juniperus communis L. are a highly valued, essential oil-rich plant material used traditionally in folk medicine as antiseptic, diuretic, antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungicidal agent. This paper reviews information on extraction methods of the essential oil from the juniper berries, its chemical composition and antimicrobial as well as antioxidant properties.

Opis:
Microscopic fungi can be present on a variety of foodstuff, including cheese. They can be responsible for fungal spoilage, causing sensory changes making food unacceptable for human consumption, and posing severe health concerns. Furthermore, some of these organisms are able to resist antimicrobial preservatives provided for by law. Antifungal activity of 15 chemically defined EOs, alone and in mixture, were checked by a microdilution test against isolates of Penicillium funiculosum and Mucor racemosus cultured from rinds of Marzolino, a typical Italian fresh pecorino cheese. Origanum vulgare yielded the lowest MIC values, followed by Salvia sclarea, Ocimum basilicum and Cymbopogon citratus, while Citrus paradisi and Citrus limon were not active. All mixtures showed antifungal activity at lower concentration with respect to MIC values of each EO component, when not in combination. This study is the first to describe the setting up of EOs mixtures to limit spoiling moulds.

Opis:
Drying is the most common and also the simplest method of preserving fresh plant materials. This process greatly extends the life of the product by the removal of water, which decreases the rate of chemical and enzymatic reactions, or even inhibits them. The drying step can cause a change in appearance, taste, color and consistency, as well as reduce the quantity of essential oils, polyphenols, pigments and vitamins. These changes can be significantly reduced by using suitable drying techniques, depending on the material. The choice of the technique should be based on knowledge of the biological, physical and chemical characteristics of the raw material. The paper presents the effects of drying on the quantitative loss of essential oils and compounds with antioxidant properties, as well as changes in the antioxidant properties of selected herbs and spices dried by different methods. Both, the food industry and the cosmetics or pharmaceuticals industry generates a demand for high-quality raw materials, and hence research is being conducted both on preservation methods and on their impact on the quality of the obtained material. It seems that the new technology of drying material in a fluidized bed, greatly reduces or even eliminates the disadvantages of current procedures.
