Opis:
Cadmium is a dangerous occupational and environmental toxin. It accumulates in the human organism mainly in liver and kidneys. Cadmium half-life is about 10 years, so the symptoms of cadmium intoxication may occur several years after the exposure. Until now in treating intoxication with this metal chelating compounds have been used, burdened with numerous undesirable symptoms. In our investigations anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa were used to reduce the harmful results caused by cadmium. Administering anthocyanins with cadmium chloride resulted in a statistically significant decrease of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, concentration of bilirubin and urea in blood serum and decreased cadmium cumulation in liver and kidneys in relation to animals receiving cadmium chloride only.

Opis:
The effect of some species of the Fabaceae family (the pea Pisum sativum L., broad bean Vicia faba L. and vetch V. sativa L.) on biochemical markers of oxidative stress within tissues of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Homoptera, Aphididae), has been studied. The highest concentration of superoxide anion radical (O2-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation products thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was recorded for morphs that fed on the broad bean. The opposite tendency was observed for the level of total thiols, that were the highest for insects reared on the pea. Among the studied aphid morphs, the highest concentration of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide was noted for the wingless females whereas TBARS content was the highest within the winged migrant tissues. Different results were obtained for the total thiols, where apterae as well as migrants reared on the tested plants, had comparable content of these compounds. Our experiments indicate that oxidative stress may play an important role in interactions between the pea aphid and their host plants.

Soil salinity is one of the major problems that decrease agricultural production especially in some developing countries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of NaCl on the activity of soil enzymes: catalase, dehydrogenase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, protease, amylase, and on multiparameter biochemical indices of soil quality: biological index of fertility (BIF), enzymatic activity number (EAN), biochemical index of fertility (Mw), biochemical index of soil fertility (B) and adenylate energy charge (AEC). Studies were carried out with light dusty clay samples with 11.0 g·kg-¹ Corg and 2.5 g·kg-¹ Nt. Solutions of different concentrations of NaCl (0.2; 0.4; 0.8; 1.6; 3.2; 6.4%) were introduced into soil samples. Addition of NaCl to soil inhibited the catalase, dehydrogenase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase and protease activity and stimulated the amylase activity. Values of BIF, EAN, Mw, B and AEC were also decreased by NaCl addition. Enzymatic activity and biochemical indices of soil quality showed the effect of NaCl on soil biological activity and may be regarded suitable tools to demonstrate the physiological reaction of soil microorganisms under saline stress.

The albino Wistar rats were used to investigate the effect of thyroxine administration on the activity of citric acid, α-Amylase, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), creatinine, cholesterol and triglycerides level in blood serum and citric acid in liver and kidney. Two groups of rats were taken for the experiment. One group was injected subcutaneously with 200 μl of thyroxine/50 g of body weight, the other group served as control. The animals were vivisected with anesthesia after intervals of 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours α-Amylase and CPK levels in blood; citric acid level in liver and kidney of control and thyroxine treated rats. The results showed that the α-Amylase activity remained unaltered (100 g/h/l) throughout the experiment. However, citric acid level found to be 460 mg in the liver and 415 mg in kidney of control rats. The values slightly increased to 480 and 680 mg in respective tissues of thyroxine treated animals for 24 hr. The values decreased in 48 and 72 hours of treatment. Further the values found to be increased after 96 hours of treatment. Although the thyroxine treatment altered citric acid, Creatinine, Cholesterol, Triglycerides and CPK levels in the tissues, the serum α-Amylase was not influenced by the thyroxine. The study suggests that the thyroxine acts as a regulator all the above parameters in the cellular level.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dog semen dialysis on sperm characteristics and some biochemical components of seminal plasma. Whole ejaculates were dialyzed against Triscitrate-fructose extender for a 5 h period at room temperature (using semi-permeable cellulose tubing of 12-14 kDa molecular weight cut-off). It has been demonstrated that the long-term dialysis of dog semen causes a significant decrease in sperm quality parameters and disrupts the biochemical properties of seminal plasma. This procedure requires further improvement.

Essential oil of Artemisia annua L. was investigated to find out its toxicity and physiological aspects on the slug Agriolimax agrestis, in controlled conditions (8±1°C, 75±5 RH and 14:10 LD). The slugs received different concentrations of essential oil treated radish leaves in methanol, while the control received methanol alone. LC10, LC30, LC50 and LC90 values were estimated at 4.67, 5.3, 5.81, 7.25%, respectively. The effect of the essential oil on some important enzymatic components like; cytochrome P450 monnooxygenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lipase, amylase and protease were significantly increased compared to the control. These results indicate that the plant Artemisia annua L. not only shows toxicity but also shows some irreversible effect on some important biochemical components and deserves further investigation.

The increasing interest in enzymatic growth promoters prompted this investigation of the effect of an enzymatic stimulating complex on selected hematological and serum biochemical parameters in boars. The enzymatic complex [five proteases (proteinases-endopeptidases) and two peptidases (exopeptidases) obtained by fermentation from Streptomyces fradiae] was added to diets for three months, at initial doses of 90 (group El) and 120 (group E2) g/ton feed for the first seven days followed by 40 and 60 g/ton, respectively, in the subsequent weeks. The evaluation was based on selected hematological (RBC, WBC, HCT (Ht), HGB (Hb), MCV, MCH, and MCHC) and biochemical (AST, ALT, AP, Ca, Mg, urea, cholesterol, creatinine, inorganic phosphorus, and oxyglucose) parameters determined before and after the experimental period. The reported values were within physiological norms. Statistical differences were found between experimental groups with respect to WBC, HCT (Ht), MCV, MCH, AP, Ca, Mg, creatinine, and inorganic phosphorus. The study results indicate that the complex of proteolytic enzymes administered to boars caused no negative changes in their metabolic profiles. The statistically different hematological and serum biochemical parameters, while within normal limits, point to an early stage of microcytic anemia and heightened agitation that could be the result of intensified nitrogen metabolism.

Mutation breeding in crop plants is an effective approach in improvement of crop having narrow genetic base such as soybean. The main objective of the present study is to determine the effect of different doses of gamma irradiation on different morpho-agronomic characteristics. Many physical mutagens have been employed for obtaining useful mutants in various crop species. The role of mutation breeding increases the genetic variability for the desired traits in various crop plants. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Mrr.) var. Co1. Was treated with physical mutagens like Gamma rays. For inducing mutation of Soybean treated with various concentrations of gamma rays 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 KR. Agronomic traits and morpho metric characters such as germination percentage, days of first flower, root length, shoot length, seedling survival, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, seed yield per plant, fresh weight per plant, dry weight per plant and 100 seed weight. All parameters were studied in M1, M2, M3 and M4 generations. The results of the present study re- vealed that the increasing level of gamma rays treatment with decreased significantly most of agronomic and morphological traits evaluated in M1 populations. In M2,M3 and M4 populations with significant increase of morphology and yield components in soybean. The yield parameters like plant height, number of cluster per plant, number of seeds per plant and seed yield per plant were recorded the moderated and high mean value in the 50 KR of gamma rays.

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important oilseed crop and grain legume grown worldwide. The groundnut seed has dual advantage of being important as a source of edible oil as well as protein. However, it is self pollinating and possesses limited variability. Despite its long history of cultivation, broad sub-specific variability and wide geographic distribution of the cultivated groundnut, defects in its genetic composition with respect to requirement of man are wide spread and for many of these no remedial resources are known to exist among its varietal forms. The exploitation of genetic resources from wild species is extremely difficult because of ploidy differences between cultivated tetraploid and diploid wild species coupled with compatibility barriers except with Arachis section. to induce polygenic variability for yield and its components in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) var. VRI-2 were treated with γ-radiation (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 KR). Effects of gamma rays treatment were observed in M1 generation gradually reduced in all parameters except days to first flower to increase concentration of treatment. In M2, M3 and M4 populations, the significant increase of grain yields and yield components of Groundnut were observed. Potential high yielding mutants were identified in progenies of treated seeds.

The effect of the Panax ginseng powder extract on reproduction, growth, renal and liver functions and some blood biochemical indices of Japanese quails were investigated. Panax ginseng powder extract at 2 mg and 4 mg/bird daily increased egg number per hen, average egg weight and hatchability. It slightly improved the efficiency of feed utilization and increased the levels of serum total protein, alkaline phosphatase and aspartate amino transferase (AST). The extract decreased significantly the levels of albumin, total lipids, triacylglycerols, cholesterol and glucose, and had no effect on body weight and the levels of serum bilirubin, urea and creatinine. This suggests that long term studies should be done on many different biochemical and physiological parameters and laboratory animals.

Synthetic organic compounds and those of plant origin used in insect pest control are known to affect digestive enzymes and biochemical compounds. The lesser mulberry pyralid Glyphodes pyloalis Walker is a monophagous and dangerous pest of mulberry that has been recently observed in Guilan province, northern Iran. In this study the effect of the neem formulation, Achook (0.03% azadirachtin) was studied on nutritional physiology and gut enzyme activity of the lesser mulberry pyralid G. pyloalis. The LC25, LC50, and LC90 values on 4th instar larvae were estimated as 113.6, 256.84, and 1,210.02 ppm, respectively. The neem insecticide exhibited a significant antifeedant activity when used at the highest concentration. When G. pyloalis larvae were provided with mulberry leaves treated with the neem extract, all nutritional indices, except approximate digestibility, decreased. Neem was found to affect digestive enzyme activities in the midgut of treated larvae. When larvae were fed on treated leaves, biochemical compounds in the hemolymph, such as protein, lipid, and glucose decreased but the amount of uric acid increased compared with the control.

Opis:
An influence of various humic-plant feed additives based on some herbs (nettle, chamomile, yarrow, perforatum), lucerne and humic materials on biochemical indices of Lohmann Brown (LB) layers blood plasma was estimated. Hens were housed in deep litter system, 20 birds in a group. Four groups were formed: control (C - standard feeding), and experimental, supplemented with preparations: E-1 herbal-humic, E-2 humic-herbal and E-3 - humic-lucerne. Hens were placed in the pens on the 16th week of life, addition of preparations with standard food mixture started at the 22nd wk and lasted until 66th wk of life. Blood for analyses was collected four times in the following periods: 27, 37, 54 and 65th wk of life. The applied humic-plant preparations to a limited degree affected the values of examined biochemical parameters in serum: total protein (TP), albumins (Albs), glucose (Glu), urea, triacylglycerols (TAG), total cholesterol (TCh), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminot-ransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). It is difficult to determine based on these study, which preparation is one the most active biologically, however is seems that humic-lucerne preparation affected the examined blood parameters to the highest degree. The reference values ranges in hens blood serum LB hens were proposed for: TP (43-65 g/l), Albs (15-22 g/l), urea (0.5-1.2 mmol/l), Glu 10-15 mmol/l), TCh (2.2-4.5 mmol/l), TAG (10-24 mmol/l), AST (4-12 U/l), ALT (150-280 mmol/l) and ALP (190-350 U/l).

Opis:
In gilts, the period of early pregnancy occurring from the time of fertilization to the beginning of implantation is sensitive to any environmental disruptions, including an unbalanced diet of a future mother. Previously, we found that due to the undernutrition in gilts during this period, the endocrine intrauterine microenvironment and DNA methylation in the uterus have been changed. These distortions may diminish the success of pregnancy. In this study we focused on the influence of a restricted diet used in gilts during the first days of pregnancy on their biochemical and haematological parameters in peripheral blood. The applied restrictive diet vs. normal diet covered only 70% of the nutritional demands of early pregnant gilts. Normal (n = 4 gilts) or restrictive (n = 5 gilts) diets were used from the day of the first signs of the estrus until day 9 of pregnancy and biochemical and haematological parameters in blood plasma were determined during peri-implantation period, e.g. on days 15 to16 of pregnancy. In restrictive vs. normal fed gilts significantly lower plasma phosphorus, calcium and total cholesterol as well as the tendency to increasing concentrations of triglicerydes and asparate aminotranserase were found. Haematological parameters did not differ between the studied gilts. Thus, it seems that the availability of nutritional factors became suboptimal in restrictively fed early pregnant gilts. Even short-lasting undernutrition of females during the peri-conceptional period may cause a disruption of biochemical homeostasis during the peri-implantation period and probably affect the success of pregnancy.

Opis:
In this study, we assessed the effect of a humic-fatty acid preparation (HFA) used in rabbit feed on certain haematological and biochemical serum parameters (the lipid profile and the Ca, P and Fe contents). A higher RBC, HGB and HCT values were observed in the groups that were given HFA. An increase in Fe concentrations were also noted. The total and LDL cholesterol were lower in the groups which received HFA than in the control group.
