We analyze regularizations of a class of linear-quadratic optimal control problems with control appearing linearly. It is shown that if the optimal control is bang-bang or if a coercivity condition for the state variables is satisfied, the solutions are continuous functions of the regularization parameter. Combining error estimates for Euler discretizations of the regularized problems with those for the regularization error, we choose the regularization parameter in dependence of the meshsize to obtain optimal convergence rates for the discrete solutions. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical findings.

A general form of the dynamics obtained as a limit of trajectories of singularly perturbed linear control systems is presented. The limit trajectories are described in terms of probability measure-valued maps. This allows to determine the extent to which the bang-bang principle for linear control systems is carried over to the singular limit.

Opis:
The School Bus-Driver Problem with Resource Constraints (SBDP-RC) is an optimization problem with many practical applications. In the problem, the number of vehicles is prepared to pick a number of pupils, in which the total resource of all vehicles is less than a predefined value. The aim is to find a tour minimizing the sum of pupils’ waiting times. The problem is NP-hard in the general case. In many cases, reaching a feasible solution becomes an NP-hard problem. To solve the large-sized problem, a metaheuristic approach is a suitable approach. The first phase creates an initial solution by the construction heuristic based on Insertion Heuristic. After that, the post phase improves the solution by the General Variable Neighborhood Search (GVNS) with Random Neighborhood Search combined with Shaking Technique. The hybridization ensures the balance between exploitation and exploration. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can escape from local optimal solutions. The proposed metaheuristic algorithm is tested on a benchmark to show the efficiency of the algorithm. The results show that the algorithm receives good feasible solutions fast. Additionally, in many cases, better solutions can be found in comparison with the previous metaheuristic algorithms.

Opis:
SiC/Cu composite powders with the barrier coating of SiC-Al onto SiC powders were synthesized from Al-containing polycarbosilane precursor and Cu-nitrate hydrate. Curing at 200°C and high temperature pyrolysis at 1600°C was used to achieve the crystallization of precursor, forming the SiC-Al coating on the surface of SiC powders. A core-shell structure with the core of SiC and the shell of Cu was constructed by calcination and hydrogen-reduction of Cu nitrate hydrate. XRD and SEM analysis revealed that the β-SiC and 4H-SiC phases were formed on the surface of the initial α-SiC powders. Also, it was observed by EDX mapping that core powders of SiC were homogeneously surrounded with the fine Cu particles on their surface.

Artykuł przynosi wnikliwą analizę produktywnych semantycznie cech struktury wizualnej fotografii Groza wojny, którą wykonał Nick Ut pod miejscowością Trảng Bàng omyłkowo zaatakowaną napalmem. Wyjątkowy charakter słynnego zdjęcia polega na tym, że mimo okoliczności skrajnie zawężających pole wyboru w zakresie momentu jego wykonania, perspektywy i kompozycji kadru, szczęśliwym trafem udało się zarejestrować na kliszy obraz nadzwyczaj wymowny i nośny znaczeniowo. Określeniu jego semantyki służą porównania z oryginalnym, nieprzyciętym kadrem, ze zdjęciem tej samej sytuacji, które Ut wykonał moment później, a przede wszystkim szczegółowa analiza struktury obrazu. Ukazuje ona istotne cechy charakterystyczne dla języka obrazów narracyjnych, konstytuujące ścisłą zależność semantyki od rygoru kompozycji jako syntaksy. Za ich sprawą zdjęcie zyskuje niezwykle wyrazisty charakter ikoniczny nie tylko w tym sensie, że stało się rodzajem „ikony” utrwalającej obraz konkretnego epizodu wojny w zbiorowej świadomości i historycznej pamięci, ale przede wszystkim ikoniczny w znaczeniu, które określiła koncepcja ikoniki Maxa Imdahla.
The essay brings an exhaustive analysis of the semantically productive features discernible in the visual structure of the photograph The Terror of War, taken by Nick Ut near the mistakenly napalm-bombed town of Trảng Bàng. The unique nature of the famous photograph lies in the fact that, despite circumstances that were extremely restrictive in terms of the timing, perspective and composition of the frame, by a sheer stroke of luck it proved possible to capture on film an image that is extremely meaningful and semantically loaded. The semantics of the image was determined by the author by comparing this image and the original frame with a photograph of the same situation taken by Ut a moment later, as well as, above all, through a detailed analysis of the image’s structure. This structure reveals the essential characteristics of the language of narrative images, which constitute the close dependence of semantics on the rigour of composition as syntax. Through them, the photograph acquires a highly expressive iconic character, not only in the sense that it has become a kind of an “icon” perpetuating the image of a specific event in collective consciousness and historical memory, but above all in the sense defined by Max Imdahl’s conception of the iconics.

The article shows why the Big Bang should not be identified with the moment when God created the Universe. The methodological objections arise from the accepted conception of autonomy of different disciplines (science, philosophy and theology), and from the principle of methodological and epistemological uniformity which is derived from that conception. On the subject plane these objections arise from the analysis of cosmological and theological knowledge. Cosmology does not give any ground for asserting that the Big Bang is an absolute temporal beginning of the Universe. Theology provides no argument for the creation in some specific time. On the contrary, its representatives warn against identifying the act of creation with the Big Bang.

Objectives: To determine the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for male permanent driving license (DL) applicants of Lucknow, India. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional community based, study body mass index, waist–hip ratio, blood pressure of each subject were determined as an anthropometric parameter along with the history of habit of smoking, tobacco chewing, alcohol consumption. STOP-Bang (Snoring, Tired or sleepy, Observed apnea, high blood Pressure, Body mass index, Age, Neck, Gender) Questionnaire – a scoring risk assessment tool – was applied for assessment of OSA risk (high OSA risk defined by score ≥ 3) for 542 male DL recipients at 2 Regional Transport Office (RTO) centers in Lucknow, India. The statistical software SPSS 17.0 was applied to the testing. Results: In total 23% (N = 125) of participants were found with the risk of OSA. High blood pressure (≥ 140/90 mm Hg) was found for the maximum number of participants (40.5%) followed by neck circumference > 40 cm (17.1%), age (> 50 years old) (15.3%), snoring (12.3%) and tired/sleepy (10.5%). Mean values of age, anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were observed significantly higher (p < 0.001) for participants with the OSA risk. In this population the risk of OSA risk (STOP-Bang score ≥ 3) was observed for 6.7% of young (< 35 years old), 34% of middle (35–45 years old) and 73% of elder age adults (> 45 years old). Conclusions: In view of findings of this study a high number of male driving license applicants were observed with the risk of OSA. Therefore efforts should be made to develop a national screening guideline/protocol for the OSA risk assessment for driving license applicants in India. This may reduce the possibility of road traffic accidents due to the OSA-associated fatigue and drowsiness behind the wheels. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(1):25–36

In optimal control problems with quadratic terminal cost functionals and systems dynamics linear with respect to control, the solution often has a bang-bang character. Our aim is to investigate structural solution stability when the problem data are subject to perturbations. Throughout the paper, we assume that the problem has a (possibly local) optimum such that the control is piecewise constant and almost everywhere takes extremal values. The points of discontinuity are the switching points. In particular, we will exclude the so-called singular control arcs, see Assumptions 1 and 2, Section 2. It is known from the results by Agrachev et al. (2002) stating that regularity assumptions, together with a certain strict second-order condition for the optimization problem formulated in switching points, are sufficient for strong local optimality of a state-control solution pair. This finite-dimensional problem is analyzed in Section 3 and optimality conditions are formulated (Lemma 2). Using well-known results concerning solution sensitivity for mathematical programs in Rn (Fiacco, 1983) one may further conclude that, under parameter changes in the problem data, the switching points will change Lipschitz continuously. The last section completes these qualitative statements by calculating sensitivity differentials (Theorem 2, Lemma 6). The method requires a simultaneous solution of certain linearized multipoint boundary value problems.

The paper considers parametric optimal control problems with bang-bang control vector function. For this problem we give regularity and second-order optimality conditions at the nominal solution which are sufficient to: (i) existence and local uniqueness of extremals, (ii) local structure stability, (iii) strong local optimality, under parameter perturbations. Here "local" means in a L∞ neighbourhood of the nominal trajectory, regardless of the control values. Stability results were obtained by the first author using the shooting approach, while optimality results were obtained by the other authors, using the Hamiltonian approach. The paper, combining both approaches, allows to unify the assumptions and to close some gaps between optimality and stability results.

In this paper we study optimal control problems with bang-bang solution behavior for a special class of semilinear dynamics. Generalizing a former result for linear systems, optimlity conditions are derived by a duality based approach. The results apply for scalar as well as for vector control functions and, in particular, for the case of the so-called multiple switches, too. Further, an iterative procedure for determining switching points is proposed, and convergence results are provided.

The paper is related to parameter dependent optimal control problems for control-affine systems. The case of scalar reference control with bang-singular-bang structure is considered. The analysis starts from a variational inequality (VI) formulation of Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle. In a first step, under appropriate higher-order sufficient optimality conditions, the existence of solutions for the linearized problem (LVI) is proven. In a second step, for a certain class of right-hand side perturbation, it is show that the controls from LVI have bang-singular-bang structure and, in L1 topology, depend Lipschitz continuously on the data. Applying finally a common fixed-point approach to VI, the results are brought together to obtain existence and structural stability results for extremals of the original control problem under parameter perturbation.
