Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 59 (2011), issue 2. The provisions of the Union of Brest guaranteed the use of the Julian calendar in the Uniate Church. In the second half of the 18th century, as a result of the socio-political changes and the so-called reduction in holidays in the Latin Church the question of a reformed calendar was brought up among the hierarchs of the Uniate Church. Its elaboration and corresponding debates showed that the calendar was clearly considered to be an element of identification for all the faithful and an important factor creating a sense of separateness and identity in the multidenominational and multinational Polish Republic. The issue of reforming the calendar used by the Uniate Church was raised at the Great Sejm, but a new list of feasts was compiled by Uniate bishops during the congress of 17th September 1790 held in Warsaw. The hierarchy of the Uniate Church was also obliged to take a stance on the changes in the calendar introduced by the invading countries. The actions taken by Uniate hierarchs in the 18th century reflect an attempt to combine economic reasons with religious ones as well as social influences dictated by the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Opis:
Panegyrics dedicated to the 18th century Uniate bishops and metropolitans represent specific Polish-Ukrainian cultural borderland of that time. From the one hand, bishops represent famous Polish (Sarmatian) families, from the other: as shepherds of the Uniate church. Authors of these literary works were well-educated people. Panegyrics in honour of Atanazy Szeptycki (1715-1746), the Lviv Uniate bishop, were written by well-known theologians and a sermon author Józef Narolski. These panegyrics were written according to common rhetorical rules (common themes or toposes, like an immortal fame, a good shepherd, a nobile family, virtues, humility). Typical way of narration about a famous person (history of a family, birth, teaching, death) under an influence of Uniate moral theology led to creation of an unique picture of the Uniate bishop of the 18th century.

The article presents the silhouette of Basilian Sofroniusz Stefan Trocewicz (1816-1882). Coming from peasants' family, the monk conducted his activities in Basilian monasteries across the Uniate diocese of Chełm - in Chełm, Zamość, Biała Podlaska and Warsaw. Unfavourable political circumstances in the Kingdom of Poland contributed to the Trocewicz’s imprisonment in the Zamość stronghold. His last monastic outpost before the liquidation of Basilian monasteries was Biala Podlaska, where he propagated the Josaphat Kuntsevych’s worship and was forced to take the monastery through the process of dissolution. Interned in his home village of Rogów, he conducted his pastoral care among Uniates from local parishes. The memory of Sofroniusz Trocewicz has been kept in his family and local community for many generations and it is still alive.

Opis:
The article discusses the way the right of patronage in the parishes of the Uniate Brześć diocese worked in the 18th century. It describes the rights and duties of patrons, also called collators, the rules of their working and it analyses the personal composition of the class of legal protectors of parishes. In the 18th century the Brześć diocese had 305 parishes that were divided into 10 deaneries. The working of each parish was connected with the right of patronage. The patron (collator) had both privileges and duties resulting from this right. Introducing the candidate for the parish priest to the bishop, taking care of his salary and taking care of the condition of the church and its furnishings belonged to the patron's duties. In return for this the collator was entitled to have special privileges: he was remembered about in prayers, he had a special seat of honor in the church, priority over the others in processions and the right to put his coat of arms in the church. The right of patronage in the parishes of the Uniate Brześć diocese in the 18th century was enjoyed by the King (34%), the clergy (6%) and lay people (60%). Among the lay collators the Sapieha (26) and Radziwiłł (25) families patronized the greatest number of parishes. The right was hereditary. It had a close connection with ownership. It did not belong to the competence of the diocesan authorities.

Opis:
The village of Szarowola is located in the district of Tomaszów Lubelski, in the northern part of the poviat of Tomaszów, in the province of Lublin. It was founded in 1579 in the land of the village of Rogóźno, in the place called Porebrody, by the Orthodox priest Kunat. In the Old Polish period, it was part of the district and proviat of  Bełz. After the fist partition of Poland it was in the Habsburg Monarchy, in the Napoleonic period in the Duchy of Warsaw, and after the Congress of Vienna in the Polish Kingdom, which was dependant on Russia. Originally, in that village there was an orthodox parish, and after the proclamation of the Union of Brest, a Uniate one. As an independent church unit, it survived until the end of the eighteenth century, when it was relegated by the Austrian authorities to the affiliate Uniate church and included in the parish of Łosiniec, where it functioned until the liquidation of the union. During the first period of its existence the parish of Szarowola organizationally was part of the deanery of Tyszowce, and at the end of the seventeenth century part of a newly created protopope’s district of Tomaszów. Analyzing the post-visitation protocols of the Bishops of Chełm, the author presented the appearance of the parish church and its furnishings, as well as the changes taking place during the period under study. It was established that the parish priest (paroch) supported himself by cultivation of arable land and meadows, which enabled him to run a farm, and he also received money from the faithful. The clergyman had a small presbytery with outbuildings at his disposal. In addition, the article attempted to show benefices of the Orthodox Church and the changes in the period under study. Finally, the author drew attention to the number of the faithful and priests working in the parish.

Opis:
In the Republic of Poland, the Uniate clergy was perceived as second-class in comparison to the Latin one. Contrary to expectations, the hierarchy was not made equal to the Roman Catholic clergy. A disastrous economic situation of the non-Latin priests resulted in their low level of education and, what is more, being disrespected. This applied to even well educated and well off Basilians. In the history of the union, the relationships between the clergy of both rites were varied, more ambitious in the case of hierarchy and simpler on the level of parish priesthood. As regards church dignitaries of both rites, the situation became more complicated after the partition of Poland, when the Russian authorities appointed a church board in Petersburg also for the Uniates. The conflicts were caused by imposing Latin control over Uniate matters and converting the Uniates into Roman Catholicism. The situation changed after 1805, when the department board for the Uniate matters was established. From then on, as the reconstitution of Orthodoxy was becoming more obvious, the relationship between the hierarchs of both rites was slackened. However, those between the strongly Latinized and Polonized (cooperating at the parish level) Uniates and Latin clergies in the 1830s were becoming more difficult. In 1835, the conversion into the Latin rite and providing mutual pastoral services were forbidden. The conflicts at the parish level concerned conversions of Greek Catholics and the division of a tithe (the tithe paid by the Uniates was often taken over by the Latin clergy). These conflicts escalated in 1828 when the Senate issued a ruling demanding a return of the tithe to the non-Latin priests. Its implementation was not easy, especially in the Bialystok borderland district. Consequently, special clerical and religious commissions were appointed that separated the tithe for the churches in Siemiatycze and Żurobice. Long-lasting disciplinary proceedings were conducted in the case of the Uniate church in Żerczyce, Mielnik, Ciechanowiec, Brańsk, Boćki and Drohiczyn in the Bielsk district and in Kuźnica in the Białystok district.

W okresie międzywojennym Kościół katolicki podjął akcję na rzecz pozyskania wiernych Kościoła prawosławnego z zachowaniem ich rodzimego obrządku. Ta akcja nosi nazwę neounii. Jej areną stało się m.in. ówczesne województwo lubelskie. Akcja przebiegała dość intensywnie w północnej części omawianego terenu, w katolickiej diecezji podlaskiej, której biskup był entuzjastą neounii. Z kolei biskup lubelski zajmował stanowisko bardziej ostrożne. Rezultaty podjętych działań były jednak znikome, i to z wielu przyczyn zarówno o charakterze wewnętrznym, jak i zewnętrznym. Powstałe placówki duszpasterskie uległy likwidacji, przeważnie w latach II wojny światowej. Jedyną istniejącą do dziś jest parafia neounicka w Kostomłotach.
In the interwar period, the Roman Catholic Church took the action for acquiring faithful of Orthodox Church, retaining nevertheless their native rite. This action is called the Neo-Union. The scene of it became, among others, the then Lublin region. The action proceeded quite intensively in the north part of this area, in the Catholic diocese of Podlasie (Podlachia). The bishop of Podlasie was an enthusiast of Neo-Union, while the bishop of Lublin took a much more careful position. For many reasons of internal as well as external nature, the results of taken action were rather slight. Almost all created then pastoral institutions were closed down, mainly during the Second World War. The only existing today is the Neo-Union parish in Kostomłoty.

The article investigates the interconfessional polemical literature as a valuable source offering an insight into the major values of the society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th–17th centuries. These texts also help understanding phenomena other than the merely religious ones. In the debate, juridical and political arguments were used too. We focus on the case study of Hipacy Pociej’s Antirrēsis (Ruthenian: 1599; Polish: 1600), written in response to Marcin Broniewski’s Apokrisis (1597). Pociej, who had an outstanding political career before becoming a Uniate bishop, mastered these arguments perfectly. His work is imbued with the mentality of the communitas nobilium, which also played a part in his lexical choices.

The beginning of the article sets the geographical location of the parish, and its size and hierarchy in the Church's organisational structures. Based on the analysis of the Visitation Protocols drawn up by the bishops of Chełm, as well as statistical data, the Author presents the scenario of the parish church and the branch churches, as well as their furnishings. The Author presents, to the fullest extent possible, the design of presbyteries and economy buildings. The list of twelve clergymen has been reconstructed and the Orthodox benefice determined. The latter part of the article specifies the size of the congregation, and shows the number of parishioners receiving sacraments.

Opis:
Dzisiejsza Perespa, to wieś położona w gminie Tyszowce, powiecie tomaszowskim, w województwie lubelskim.
Perespa is a tiny village located in Tyszowce gmina (country commune) that lies within the administration of Tomaszów poviat (county) in Lubelskie Voivodship (District). Its roots date back to at least the beginning of 16th century. The first written record about this village claiming it to be abandoned dates back to 1531. However, it is recorded that the Orthodox church functioned there according to the note from 1570. The operation of the Orthodox parish throughout the remaining years of 16th century was also later confirmed. The Uniate parish of Saint Michael the Archangel was the successor of the Orthodox parish. In the beginning, in terms of jurisdiction it belonged to the protopope in Grabowiec. In accordance with the post-visitation protocols the Orthodox church appears to have been wooden and quite well equipped with ecclesiastical utensils. Also, there was a wooden bell tower and a cemetery by the church. Not only did a paroch (parish priest) have some arable land and grassland at his disposal to cultivate and support himself but also he collected various fees from the parishioners. Furthermore, he also was in possession of a parsonage and ancillary buildings. The personal details of past seven parochs presiding at this church in the period this research focuses on has been established whereas the average number of parishioners for the same period that fluctuated with the time is estimated at between 300 and 375.

Opis:
The article presents Kajetan Kraszewski’s opinions on the Uniate Church in Podlasie, included in his Silva rerum. The views of the author of Kronika rodzinna (Family chronicle) are confronted with the statements of the researchers (mostly historians, literary scholars and linguists) within the broad context of the political, social and cultural life of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the partition periods. By comparing research literature and excerpts from Silva rerum, the article analyses the effects of the Union of Lublin and the Union of Brest for the peasant community of Podlasie in the 1860s and 1870s. As presented in Kajetan Kraszewski’s Kronika, the tragedy of the followers of the Uniate Church in Podlasie resulted from the social and religious conditions that fuelled the divides during the time of the Russian partition (divide et impera). Kraszewski’s Silva rerum constitutes an image of the distance with which peasants treated Podlasie’s Uniate Church members, similar to the latter’s during the “masters’” uprising of 1863 (“in the masters’ uprising – we stayed aside watching”).

Opis:
In the south-eastern part of vaivodship of Lublin, and, to be more accurate, within the areas of Tomaszów and Hrubieszów districts and partly in Zamość district may be encountered a group of timber-constructed Uniate orthodox churches characteristic of their specific architectural features which are greatly differing from those present in architecture of orthodox churches in the neighbouring areas. The most ancient sacred buildings of that group are dating from the mid-seventeenth century while those most recently built, from the years ending the nineteenth century. They all were erected as those clearly divided into three parts in their general plans, namely that of sanctuary, nave and a part designed for the feminine worshipers and, in addition, with a strong emphasis on the nave forming both in plan and in the outer shape of the whole building its clearly discernible central portion. The above Uniate orthodox churches are, furthermore, characteristic of considerable heights of their outer walls which the impression cannot be obscured even by a strong enough horizontal accent formed by the overhanging eaves running around the building. Due to the separate roofings applied in all the three main portions of the building and having the shape о-f three domes or a dome crowning the nave and two gable roofs covering the two remaining parts and also owing to the strictly observed rule that the nave should always dominate over the other two portions have been more still emphasised not only the central nucleus and the symmetry of the whole structure but, at the same time, through this perpendicular accentuation of its separate portions was considerably strengthened an impression of its height. Both magnitude, but at the same time a certain tallness of solids of these Uniate orthodox churches seem to be even more striking features in the triple-dome buildings. For special attention deserve the two different, with concern to height, ways that were usually applied for shaping 'of carcasses of these sacred buildings which are either differentiated, i.e. these of nave walls are higher and thus dominating over those of the other two portions (normally having the same heights), or are of the same height in all the three portions of the building and are ending with a common cornice. Buildings in their first version are mainly to be found in the area of Tomaszów district and the so designed objects exibit an unbroken traditional continuity in their forms dating from the mid-seventeenth century until the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Designs representing the second version are grouped in the area of Hrubieszów district and their preserved and well known examples are dating from the nineteenth century. The burnt-down (due to the faulty electrical installation) Uniate orhodox church at Hulcze (erected in 1869) constituted one of the outstanding examples of the „Hrubieszów versionb of that group. The until now gathered documentation allows to state that the territorial range of the timber-constructed Uniate orthodox churches belonging to Tomaszów-Hrubieszów group is covering the territory of the neighbouring deanships of the former Uniate diocese of Chełm and also that the local building tradition was continued throughout the period from the first half of the 17th century until the years ending the 19th century. This tradition must have been one strong enough if even after the abolition in (1875 by the tzarist authorities of the Uniate diocese and after introducing of the orthodox rite lit was able to prevent the penetration of foreign influences which the fact is apparently evidenced by orthodox churches erected after 1875 and planned for the Russian-type liturgy who, however, preserved their former character.

Gródek is a country village whose origin dates back to at least the fifteen century. The first written record of the village dates from 1409. In it is found acknowledgment of Wołczko Rekutowicz from Gródek as one of the founders and a supplier of furnishings to the local church. Originally belonging to the Duchy of Belz, the village together with the Duchy, was incorporated into the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in 1462. After the first partition of Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth, Gródek was annexed by the Habsburg Empire, then it became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and following the joint resolutions of the Congress of Vienna it was given to Russia. Today the village situated at the Huczwa river administratively belongs to Jarczow gmina (commune) as part of Tomaszów poviat in Lubelskie Province. During the period the piece of research covers, Gródek was mostly inhabited by Russian people and was an Orthodox parish. It in turn became a Greek Catholic parish following the Union of Brest. The first written record of an Orthodox Church comes from 1507 while 17th century documents confirm the existence of a Uniate parish. Having analyzed post- visitation protocols, it might be deduced that it was a wooden church poorly equipped with ecclesiastical utensils. There was also a bell tower and a cemetery alongside the church. It has been determined a paroch (parish priest) had some arable land as well as grassland at his disposal to support himself. Furthermore, he collected various ecclesiastical fees from his parishioners. From the period of time this research is focused on, personal information of 4 parochs as well as the approximate number of parishioners that varied between 14 and 70 has been established. Furthermore, the church is known to have been functioning in 1772 but it fell into ruin before 1798 after which the parishioners from Gródek attended the branch church in Podlodów.

The article presents the writings of Jakub Susza (Jacob Susha, c. 1610– 1687), the Uniate bishop of Chełm 1652–1687. His most important works: the Latinbiographies of Josaphat Kuntsevych (Cursus vitae et certamen martyrii b. Iosaphat Kuncevicii..., Rome 1665) and Meletius Smotrytsky (Saulus et Paulus Ruthenae Unionis sanguine beati Iosaphat transformatus sive Meletius Smotriscius..., Rome 1666) and the history of the revered icon of Our Lady of Chełm (Phoenix redivivus albo obraz starożytny chełmski Panny i Matki Przenajświętszej, Zamość 1646, Lvov 1653, Zamość 1694), all represent little-known literature written within the Uniate Church. Jakub Susza’s intellectual development, his education in Jesuit colleges in Braniewo, Pultusk and Olomouc, and the characteristic features of his works (the consistent use of Polish and Latin as literary languages, the use of western Latin and Polish literary models) contribute to his image as an example of latinisation and occidentalisation (which at that time meant polonisation) of higher Uniate clergy in the Commonwealth, though as a bishop he took care to preserve the religious identity of the Eastern church.

In the literature on the Kosciuszko Insurrection, military, political, social or international aspects of insurrection are described in details. There was also often tackled a problem of participation of the clergy, mostly Roman Catholics, and attitudes of individual churches and religious communities towards the uprising. Though, it was rarely researched on relation of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko to Uniates (Greek Catholics) and his active attempts to engage Uniates in the rise. Aprops of discussing the Polish-Russian relations in a religious context (Russia used care for the Orthodox church to interfere in Polish affairs) questions arise also over Kosciuszko and the Polish government attitude towards Orthodox church. However, the Orthodox inhabitants of Poland (mostly Russians) were a minority far less numerous than their compatriots who adhere to the Greek Catholic Rite (Uniates). Kosciuszko planned to extend the uprising over the whole Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and involve in it as much people as possible. He wanted to attract all social, ethnic and religious groups, in order to give the uprising character of nationwide movement. Clergymen of various denominations were often intermediaries in the transmission of the call for uprising, thus they were addressees of the appeals of Commander in Chief and the insurgents’ authorities. In the letters calling for the uprising Kosciuszko appealed to patriotic and religious feelings at the same time. To engage the peasant in uprising (peasants from all over the country, but among Unites and Orthodox dominated peasants) and cover the eastern territories inhabited by Ruthenians, Kościuszko in camp at Polaniec issued series of very important documents, including The Manifesto of Polaniec and appeals to the Uniate and Orthodox clergy. Document which is published here is an unknown Kosciuszko’s letter to the Uniate clergy, that was found in the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv.

The aim of this paper is to present the activities of the first educational institution educating Uniate clergy in the Metropolitan Diocese of Kiev and its role in the education of the Uniate community of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The seminary was founded in 1743 by Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł 'Rybeńko' in Novy Sverzhen (Nowy Świerżeń). The conduct of the seminary was entrusted to the Order of the Lithuanian Basilian Province. Monks served as rectors and teachers. The curriculum was modeled on Jesuit colleges. The seminary in Novy Sverzhen was planned for 12 alumni. The seminar educated clergymen for the Uniate parishes located in the Radziwiłł estate. The first seminary in the Uniate Metropolitan Diocese of Kiev did not solve the problem of the low intellectual level of the Uniate clergy. In relation to the needs the ability to train 12 alumni was far too small. The seminary closed in 1828.
