Opis:
In the present study, an innovative design of a urea-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system without conventional mixing elements was developed. The aim was to obtain a high degree of urea decomposition, and uniform ammonia distribution at the inlet to the catalyst, while minimising the liquid film deposition and keeping the compact design. The concept of the design was based on creating high turbulence and elongating the flow paths of the droplets. The design was verified through a series of numerical simulations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach and a discrete droplet model (DDM) spray representation. The analysis included various operating conditions as well as subcooled and superheated sprays. A uniform ammonia distribution was achieved regardless of the operating points and spray properties. Additionally, in the case of a flash-boiling injection, a further reduction of the wall film was observed.

Opis:
The upcoming Euro 6d emission standard puts more even stringent requirements for diesel engine cars, especially in the case of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission. The most widely used technique to meet tight standards is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with urea-water-solution (UWS) injection. One of the crucial factors is even ammonia distribution at the catalyst inlet; hence, very often product development is focused around this issue. The product development is supported by both experimental and numerical work. The common approach to measure cross section ammonia distribution on the SCR is using sampling system at catalyst outlet. Very often exhaust layout is opened just after the SCR catalyst, cutting off the rest part for instance tailpipe or Clean-up Catalyst. Therefore, a backpressure at SCR outlet resulting from the downstream part is also eliminated. This could significantly affect flow parameters as the density changes, thus ammonia distribution and wall film deposition may vary as well. Within this work, the influence of the backpressure at SCR outlet on the ammonia distribution and wall wetting was numerically investigated. The simulations were run under various boundary conditions for the Close Coupled SCR architecture. It was shown that depending on the operating point the boundary pressure affects both factors on the different level.

Opis:
The stringent pollutant and CO2 emission limitation in upcoming legislation norms for Diesel passenger car applications force the introduction of exhaust aftertreatment systems with maximum purification and energetic efficiency. The state-off-the-art technologies for NOx reduction, NOx storage and reduction catalyst (NSC) and selective catalytic reduction catalyst (SCR), show challenges for robust performance under strongly extended emission relevant operation conditions from cold start to high engine load and speed. One technical solution is the combination of NSC and passive SCR. This paper presents the experimental results obtained in the EUproject “Powerful”. On engine test bench and demonstrator vehicle, an exhaust aftertreatment system combining NSC, passive SCR and fuel reformer technology was developed and experimentally investigated steady-state and on road. The engine independent NSC operation offers potentials for lowered fuel consumption penalty by avoiding engine rich operation. The intrinsic NH3 formation during the NSC regeneration is used for additional NOx conversion on the passive SCR and reduces NOx and CO2 emission.

Opis:
According to actual engineering test, we design a linear controlled spray ammonia grille, and apply it to the SCR injection system of ship tail gas treatment. In this paper, the geometric model of ammonia injection grid was built in the flue of diesel engine, and the effects of spray atomization, ammonia uniformity and urea droplet distribution on spray atomization were simulated. Then the test bench was set up to observe the injection status of the ammonia injection grille. The NOx content of the outlet was measured by the original data of the flue gas, and the experimental data were processed. We calculate the denitrification rate by taking the average value to verify the correctness of the spray ammonia grid scheme.

Opis:
The article presents the results of experimental research and their comparison with CFD simulations for the original selective catalytic reduction system and WALKER replacement. The research was performed to develop the WALKER universal mixer. The SCR prototype without mixer and with the proposed mixer were tested and compared with the original VW part. The next step was reverse engineering, which consisted in scanning the tested parts with a laser and processing their point cloud in Leios2 program. Reverse engineering has allowed the reconstruction of 3D geometry of the tested parts in the Catia v5 program and then preparation their models for computational fluid dynamics. Numerical simulations were carried out in the Ansys Fluent program, thanks to which several quantities were determined e.g. uniformity index of gas flow through the monolith and coefficient of variation as a measure of mixing degree, which have a significant impact on the design of the mixer and the SCR system.

Standards linked with the environmental protection and vehicles are increasingly restrictive. EURO VI standard and regulations define the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold. Because of that, Selective Catalyst Reduction systems are used in a new vehicles with the heavy-duty type engines. This paper presents a study of the SCR system in public transport vehicles of the Municipal Transport Company (MPK) in Lublin, Poland. The tests were performed to study the power consumption of the SCR (the urea applicator into the catalyst) and calculate the results per unit of fuel. The amount of fuel for the Solaris Trollino 12 trolleybus was estimated and the energy demand found was of the order of 343 kWh/year. This gives low diesel fuel consumption, i.e. only 34.3 litres per year. The study also shows a graph of the daily demand of energy by the SCR system in public transport vehicles.

Opis:
Catalytic exhaust gas aftertreatment devices fitted to combustion engines are susceptible to partial deactivation as their operating time progresses. This includes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactors meant for NOx emission control. There are several known deactivation mechanisms of SCR reactors already analyzed in detail in the literature. This paper, however, approaches the analysis of reactor deactivation by comparison of exhaust gas characteristics over repeatable cycle for fresh and aged samples of a SCR reactor for non-road mobile machinery. The research aims to outline which parameters describing the SCR reactor’s performance are most affected by its ageing. In order to do that, fresh and aged samples of the reactor were tested under the Non Road Steady Cycle. The acquired emission results, including concentration traces of particular compounds were analyzed. The specific NOx emission of the aged reactor was significantly higher than that of the fresh one. The NOx conversion efficiency of both reactors was found similar at periods of steady engine operation. It was recognized that during transient conditions the NOx conversion efficiency of the aged reactor was decreased. It was found that the main factor contributing to that phenomenon is the drop in the ammonia storage capacity of the aged SCR sample.
