Opis:
The methods and good practice in XRD measurements are presented in this paper. The paper concerns the specimens made of 2024-T3 aluminium alloy plates joint together by rivets. The presented methodology can by divided into two parts: (1) general rules of XRD measurements on 2024-T3 aluminium alloy - choosing the diffraction angle, time of exposure on X-ray radiation, diameter of X-ray spot, etc. and (2) rules applied to riveted specimens - geometrical analysis of the specimen and movements of the goniometer which allow to obtain proper results of stress measurement. Short information about theoretical bases and influence of protective layers on XRD measurement is also included. In the end of the paper the additional equipment called the slit is presented, which allow to perform measurements on flat and cylindrical surfaces with higher resolution.

Opis:
The paper deals with the measurement of residual stresses in P92 welded pipe using the blind hole drilling technique. The post weld heat treatment (PWHT) of a P92 welded pipe was also conducted to study their effect on residual stresses. The P92 pipe weld joints were prepared using gas tungsten arc welding process. The residual stress measurement was carried out using a strain gauge rosette that was associated with the plastic deformation of the material and a stress concentration effect of a multi-point cutting tool. A corrective formulation was developed for calculating the corrected value of residual stresses from the experimentally obtained strain value. The Strain gauge response was estimated experimentally using tensile testing for uniaxial loading while a finite element analysis was performed for biaxial loading. A gas tungsten arc welds joint was prepared for a conventional V-groove and a narrow groove design.

The magnetic phase diagram of bulk Cr_{100-x}Al_{x} shows interesting behaviour close to the triple point concentration of x ≈2. Since the magnetic properties of Cr are influenced by dimensionality, stress and strain, this study focussed on the investigation of Cr₉₉Al₁ thin films prepared on fused silica substrates with thicknesses t varying from 29 to 452 nm using sputtering techniques. Resistance measurements covering the temperature range 2 to 400 K did not show any clear anomalies that could be indicative of changes in the magnetic ordering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies indicate the films are polycrystalline textured and that the 80 nm sample has the smallest grain size. In-plane stresses in these thin films were studied using the specialised XRD ın²ψ-method. The results show that the stress varies with film thickness. The 29 nm sample has stress in the order of 833 MPa and with increasing film thickness the stress reaches 1471 MPa for the 80 nm layer, where after it systematically reduces for the thicker coatings to 925 MPa for the 452 nm film. The highest stress for the Cr₉₉Al₁ thickness sample series is seen in the film with the smallest grain size.

The riveted joints are critical areas of the aircraft structure. The residual stress and strain state appears at the rivet hole after the riveting process and improves fatigue behaviour of the joint. Numerical FE simulations of the upsetting process are carried out using the MARC code. Three-dimensional numerical models are used to determine the resulting stress and strain fields at the countersunk rivet and around the hole. The contact with friction is defined between the mating parts of the joint. Calculations are carried out in an elastic-plastic range. The influence of the rivet geometry, rivet stiffness and the sheet material model on strain and stress states is studied. Non-destructive testing methods like X-ray diffraction, liquid penetrant inspection and visual detection analysis with a UV lamp are used for validation of numerical results. Comparison between numerical and experimental results gives a satisfactory agreement. Numerical simulations allow investigating the influence of imperfections on the strength of the joint.

There were conducted numerical analyses of thermal residual stress in a double gradient surface coating consisting of porous ZrO2 of 500 m thickness, placed on Inconel 718 substrate, with an interlayer of NiCoCrAlY of 200 m thickness. It was assumed that the coating was deposited by plasma spraying. It showed out roughness of the free surface and borders between material phases. Numerical model took into consideration the real geometry of material structure. The results were analysed after transforming them into discrete distributions of particular components of stress. Distributions were presented for particular zones of the surface coating. This allowed to obtain signals originated by distinct features of the material structure such as particular material phases, their contact borders, pores, roughness of the external surface, roughness of internal borders between layers of the gradient system and others.

High strength low alloy (HSLA) steels are a new generation of plain carbon steels with significantly improved mechanical properties while maintaining good weldability with common commercial techniques. Residual stress and microstructural analysis of welded HSLA Strenx 700 MC was carried out in this research. Results have shown that the welding process causes significant grain coarsening in the heat affected zone. The microstructural changes are also accompanied with creation of tensile residual stress field in the weld metal and heat affected zone, reaching up-to depth of 4 mm. Tensile residual stresses are well known for acceleration of fatigue crack initiation and together with coarse grains can lead to significant decrease of the fatigue properties of the welded structure.

Opis:
Riveted joints are a common location of fatigue cracks in aircraft metal structures. Fatigue life of such joints as well as a place of cracks nucleation is strongly influence by a stress distribution in sheets, which is a result of residual stresses (mainly after riveting) and stresses induced by external loads. Stress distribution in two-row lap joint was investigated with the use of Finite Element Method. The joint consist of two 1.5 mm sheets and two protruding rivets with diameter equal to 4 mm, made of 2024 T3 (sheets) and 2117 T4 (rivets) aluminium alloys. The simulations covered a riveting process and tensile stages. The 3D models of joint with the universal rivets and with the brazier, rivets with a compensator were prepared. Elastoplastic material properties as well as geometric nonlinearity and contact phenomena were included. The results of simulations show that the residual stress distribution after release of tensile loading varies significantly from the distribution after riveting only. This fact should therefore be taken into account in a fatigue life estimation of such joints performed based on a FE calculation. The paper presents also the influence of the analysed rivet geometry on the stress distribution at the sheets faying surfaces.

Thermal energy produced by discrete and random electric sparks in electric discharge machining (EDM) melts surface material. A portion of this molten material is removed and the remaining material resolidified by rapid cooling in a hydrocarbon oil. The effect of repeated heating and cooling of the surface and sub surface material with complex temperature gradients results in residual stresses in machined parts. The aim of this investigation is to determine the distribution of residual stresses in the depth of machined material with respect to discharge current, most important electric parameter during EDM. It is well known that surface finish is dependent on discharge current. Therefore, investigations were carried out for smaller discharge current levels i.e. 3, 6, 9, 12 ampere. Hole-drill strain gauge method is used for the determination of residual stresses in the depth of material. For comparison purposes, residual stresses are also determined for conventionally turned specimens. This study provided quantitative analysis of the residual stresses for various discharge current in EDM which is a key parameter in deciding the service life of material.

Opis:
Fused Deposition Modeling is an additive manufacturing technology that is used to create a wide range of parts and applications. Along with its benefits, there are some challenges regarding the printed parts' mechanical properties, which are associated with printing parameters like layer thickness, printing speed, infill density, printing temperature, bed temperature, infill pattern, chamber temperature, and printing orientation. One of the most crucial challenges in additive manufacturing technology is the residual stress, which significantly affects the parts like fatigue life, cracks propagation, distortions, dimensional accuracy, and corrosion resistance. Residual stress is hard to detect in the components and sometimes is costly to investigate. Printing specimens with different parameters costs money and is timeconsuming. In this work, numerical simulation using Digimat-AM software was employed to predict and minimize the residual stress in printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene material using Fused Deposition Modeling technology. The printing was done by choosing six different printing parameters with three values for each parameter. The results showed a significant positive correlation between residual stress and printing temperature and infill percentage and a negative correlation with layer thickness and printing speed. At the same time, we found no effect of the bed temperature on the residual stress. Finally, the minimum residual stress was obtained with a concentric infill pattern.

The autofrettage technique is an effective and important measure to improve load-bearing capacity and safety and to even distributions of stresses for pressure vessels. Based on the classical fundamental theory on autofrettage and by theoretical analysis of residual stresses, the total stresses, the overstrain and the load-bearing capacity, etc., in view of the cylindrical pressure vessels with outside-to-inside radius ratio larger than the critical ratio, the laws contained in the autofrettage theory are revealed, the essential cause and reason for the obtained laws are analyzed, the inherent and meaning relations between various parameters in the autofrettage theory are brought to light, and the safe depth of the plastic zone (overstrain) as well as the conditions of loading or optimum operation conditions are found out. It is shown that under the optimum operation conditions, pressure vessels are not only safe but also economic, and the equations of the autofrettage theory are simplified greatly and are quite terse, as a result, the essential relations between various parameters in the autofrettage theory are distinct, and these equations are convenient for application in engineering practice.

Opis:
Riveting is a traditional, but still popular (particularly in aviation) method of joining metal and composite elements. The residual stress and plastic strain states occur in the joint after the riveting process. The total stress aperienced by the material at a given location within a component depends on the residual and applied stress. Residual post-riveting stress fields are widely accepted to have a significant influence on the fatigue life of aircraft structures. The single lap riveted joint consisting of two sheets and three rows of rivets are analysed. Two specimens are taken into consideration: sheet width and pitch distance are equal to 10.5 mm and rivet diameter is equal to 3.5 mm in the former case whereas 25 mm wide sheets and 5 mm rivet diameter are used in the later case. Distance between rivets (pitch length) and sheet width are equal to 3 or 5 rivet diameters. Materials used in riveted joints are subjected to plastic deformation. The rivet (PA24) and the sheet (2024T3) aluminium alloys are described using piecewise linear material models. The yield stress for the multiaxial state is calculated using the von Mises yield criterion. The paper deals with analysis of the pitch length and sheet thickness influence on stress fields. Stress concentrations around the holes in the rivet row and its distribution between rows are calculated. Models with and without residual stresses are taken into consideration. Local change of the sheet thickness causes a decrease in secondary bending of the joint. This is a result of a small increase in bending between the rivet rows and a simultaneous decrease in maximum bending stress values.

Residual Stresses (RS) in mechanical components can be undesirable, and their accurate identification can prevent component damage. There are many semi-destructive methods for determination of RS. The hole-drilling method offers many advantages when compared to other methods due to its practicality, applicability to different materials, and low-cost execution. According to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E837- -13a Standard, the RS are assumed to be constant at each depth level when employing the hole-drilling method. Thus, calibration coefficients are necessary to calculate stress values at each level using the relaxed strains measured on the component surface, as incremental drillings are performed. However, the coefficients provided by the Standard were obtained using a coarsely-discretized 2D finite element model. This work aims to find new calibration coefficients based on the linear elasticity theory and using the Finite Element Method (FEM) with a refined mesh. A numerical model consisting of linear tetrahedral finite elements was constructed to simulate the resulting strains, as unitary stresses are applied at each depth level of the component inner surface. Using this method, two matrices of calibration coefficients are obtained, one related to normal stresses, and another related to shear stresses. The results show that the RS obtained using the new coefficients presented a 3.9% relative average error compared to analytical values in the four experiments conducted, while the ASTM Standard coefficients resulted in a 9.7% relative average error.

The paper deals with the numerical analysis on residua! stress and strain fields in a rivet hole. This stage of study concerns improving of the fatigue performance of riveted joints in an airframe. Riveting, particularly in aviation, is a traditional but still commonly used method of joining sheet metal components. Aircraft structures are thin-walled ones, with coverings made of thin sheets stiffened by stringers, frames or ribs. Sheets are typically assembled by a multiple rivet or bolt joints. Rivets and bolts are also used to joint sheets and stiffeners. Therefore, fatigue resistance of the aircraft structure depends on tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands r ivet joints, which are used to build it. The local numerical models of the joint are considered with regard to the aim introduced in the paper. Numerical FE simulations of an upsetting process are carried out using the LS-DYNA code. Three-dimensional numerical models are used to determine the resulting stress and strain fields at the mushroom rivet and around the hole. This type of problem requires the use of contact between the elements assembled and non-linear geometrie and elasto-plastic multilinear materiał models to simulate the behaviour of the rivet and sheets. The influence of shape imperfection on strain and stress states is studied.

The stress distribution function in the surface layer is created as a result of using stress measurements on the surfaces of C45 steel samples after shot peening. Stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction with the use of the PSF-3M device from the Rigaku Company. For measuring residual stresses, subsequent layers of the top surface of the material were used as a basis, and these were obtained through electrochemical etching. The test results i.e. distance into the material, sample hardness, shot type, stress) were entered into the stepwise multiple regression program. A record of residual stresses was obtained in the form of the second-degree regression function of three independent variables with interactions. The obtained analytical form of the residual stress function was used in the FUNVAL3.EXE program to calculate the tabular values of stresses permeating into the material. For the analytical description of the stress distribution, the REGPOLY.EXE regression program was used, which creates a polynomial functional form of the residual stress distribution. The plot form of the residual stress distribution was obtained using the EXCEL Microsoft Office 2000 program.

Moreover, a plane-second- -cutting model was further developed. It showed that a minor decrease of cutting force and a higher maximum compressive stress were generated in the second cutting. Those results were conducive to predict and improve the whirlwind milling.

Opis:
One crucial characteristic of the aircraft structure are fatigue properties and rivets are usually critical areas in metal airframes due to fatigue cracks nucleation. According to literature, the NACA riveting method offers a huge increase in fatigue life of riveted lap joints. This paper presents FE simulations of quasi-static riveting on a press for standard countersunk rivets and the NACA riveting in two configurations: with a normal brazier rivet and a brazier rivet with a compensator. The analyzed configurations have been compared based on the stress courses on the sheets faying surfaces after riveting process. Due to a lack of data, the rivet length and the squeezing force value were assumed for NACA riveting based on FE simulations. The results indicated beneficial influence of the NACA riveting in the outer sheet (with a countersunk) and disadvantageous influence in the inner sheet. This effect was stronger in the case of the rivet with a compensator.

Opis:
This paper deals with the behavior of a crack in the residual stress field induced by the butt weld in a wide plate. It is known that the distribution form of residual stress has similarities regardless of the welding process, although the size and the magnitude of the residual stress depend largely on the welding process. Stress intensity factor and stress redistribution induced by the crack extension were calculated for a crack with arbitrary length and location. The stress redistributions caused by crack extension obtained by the present analysis showed good agreement with the experimental data. Fatigue crack propagation behavior in the residual stress field reported by Glinka was also examined from ΔK point of view. The effect of residual stress on the fatigue crack propagation rate is considered to be the effect of varying mean stress. It was shown that fatigue crack propagation rate is estimated by the following equation with reasonable accuracy.
da/dn=CΔFα(1+ σ0/Δσ Fres)
In the above equation, material constants C and α of Paris’s law are experimentally obtained by using specimens without the weld joint.

Opis:
The final accuracy of the parts formed using single point incremental forming greatly depends on the mechanical properties of the material to be formed and the residual stress formation. In this paper, an X-ray diffraction technique was used to study the distribution of the residual stress along the generating line of the conical drawpiece. A DC04 steel sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm was used as a test material. The basic mechanical properties of the DC04 sheet metal were determined in the uniaxial tensile test according to the EN ISO 6892–1:2016. It was found that the maximum amount of the residual stress existed in a point located in the midway between a base and a truncation of the drawpiece. In the outer surface of the drawpiece, the orange peel defect associated with a rough surface appearance after SPIF a drawpiece, was observed. In contrast, the inner surface of component was characterized by linear grooves associated with the interaction of tool tip with the sheet surface. This defect is mainly influenced by vertical step size.

Opis:
Mechanical properties and residual stresses of friction stir welded and autogenous tungsten inert gas welded structural steel butt welds have been studied. Friction stir welding (FSW) of structural steel butt joints has been carried out by in-house prepared tungsten carbide tool with 20 mm/min welding speed and 931 rpm tool rotation. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding of the butt joints was carried out with welding current, arc voltage and the welding speed of 140 amp, 12 V and 90 mm/min respectively. Residual stress measurement in the butt welds has been carried out in weld fusion zone and heat affected zone (HAZ) by using blind hole drilling method. The magnitude of longitudinal residual stress along the weld line of TIG welded joints were observed to be higher than friction stir welded joint. In both TIG and FSW joints, the nature of longitudinal stress in the base metal was observed to be compressive whereas in HAZ was observed to be tensile. It can be stated that butt welds produced with FSW process had residual stress much lower than the autogenous TIG welds.
