    In the article the question of religious pluralism is presented. The author gives the characteristics of this concept, which has changed its meaning over the recent years. The author brings into light some contemporary ways of perception of the religious pluralism and controversies they result in. The concept of inclusive pluralism by Jacques Dupuis has been recommended by the author as a model of religious pluralism which enables the opening of religious education on the inter-religious dimension. A proper understanding of religious pluralism plays an important role in forming an open religious identity which is one of the key tasks in education including early education.

    The European Union has no fully developed mechanism of collective memory, unlike national states. The Union has its history now, but this history is not common to all of the member states, and as such cannot be treated as the foundation for European identity. This article aims to demonstrate the relationship between the cultural identity of the European Union and religious pluralism. Broadly understood, religion is the foundation of culture. It shapes the world view, and it explains the cause and way the world was created. It also interprets human fate, being the source of values for a believer, the observance of which constitutes a guarantee of what happens at death. Cultural changes involve religious ones, although their direction is not clear. Neither is it obvious what the distinction between cause and effect is. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly interesting to note that certain foundations of the European culture and its specific features are associated with Christianity, or more broadly, with the Judeo-Christian tradition. The unity of Europe is a unity of pluralistic European culture. Democratic principles, human rights and Christian values present in multicultural Europe may be a solid point of reference when building a European identity.

    Interpretacja różnorodności religijnej stawała się w ostatnim półwieczu coraz ważniejsza również dla ekumenizmu. W pierwszym rzędzie autor pragnie zaznaczyć, w jaki sposób temat ten stał się dlań bliski, również jak po raz pierwszy spotkał się z pluralizmem religijnym i osobą Dietricha Bonhoeffera. Ponadto naszkicowany został pokrótce stosunek chrześcijaństwa do innych religii w perspektywie wyznaczanej przez współczesne ujęcia. Po trzecie, przedstawione zostały wypowiedzi Bonhoeffera na temat innych religii oraz jego stosunek do nich, zwłaszcza w kontekście jego niedoszłej podróży do Indii. Po czwarte, wspomniane już treści skonfrontowane zostały z jego słynnymi wypowiedziami, takimi jak „bezreligijne chrześcijaństwo” i „świat, który staje się dorosły”. Wreszcie konfrontacja ta jest kontynuowana w perspektywie współczesnych doświadczeń, wszystko to zaś zostaje ujęte w kilku tezach. Autor konkluduje, że w ujęciu Bonhoeffera wszystko służy przekazywaniu Ewangelii, również kiedy do realizacji konkretnych aktów czy idei czerpał z innych religii, zwłaszcza z hinduizmu.
    An approach to the religious diversity became in the last half-century more and more important, also for ecumenism. Author explains on the first place what sparked his interest in religious pluralism and the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Further, he outlined an attitude of Christianity towards other religions in the contemporary perspectives. Thirdly, article presents various Bonhoeffer’s remarks on other religions and his personal attitude, particularly in the perspective of his unfulfilled journey to India. Fourth, the highlighted content has been confronted with his most famous expressions as that of “religionless Christianity” and that of “world come of age”. The results of this confrontation have been carried on in the perspective of the contemporary experiences. Finally, author concludes that according to Bonhoeffer’s interpretation all was intended to pass the Gospel on, even if some of the ideas have been drawn from other religions, particularly from the Hinduism.

    Artykuł dotyczy pojęcia mitu rozłamanego, nazwanego w ten sposób przez niemieckiego teologa i filozofa Paula Tillicha (1886-1965). Teza, jaka się z tym pojęciem wiąże, głosi, że wszystkie religie, w tym także chrześcijaństwo, posługują się językiem mitycznym, który wyraża prawdy moralne i intuicje metafizyczne, nie zaś obiektywne fakty i stany rzeczy, które mogą być przedmiotem wiedzy. Mit rozłamany nie oznacza odrzucenia mitu jako zwykłej nieprawdy, lecz rozłamanie na nieprawdę, jaką jest szata opowieści pojęta dosłownie, i prawdę, jaką jest (aczkolwiek nie zawsze i w różnym stopniu) inspiracja moralna i duchowa. Mit rozłamany jest samoświadomy, ale nie zostaje zdyskredytowany. W artykule formułuje się sześć racji, które mogą przemawiać na rzecz takiego poglądu. Autor uważa, że przyjęcie opisanego stanowiska przez społeczność ludzi wierzących może być bardzo trudne, toteż tradycyjny dyskurs wiary, w którym artykuły Credo pojmuje się dosłownie (choć z uwzględnieniem pojęć tajemnicy i analogii), trzeba uznać nie za anachronizm, ale za autonomicznego partnera dialogu.

    Pluralizm kulturowy i religijny na Zachodzie stał się faktem. Zresztą stare europejskie państwa od samego początku istnienia skupiały na swoich terytoriach nie tylko „swoich”, ale również „obcych”. Z biegiem czasu „obcy” – przedstawiciele odmiennych kultur, wyznawcy innych religii – stawali się w pewnym sensie „swoimi”. Doświadczenie pluralizmu w życiu publicznym wiąże się ze wzajemnym poznawaniem się, co prowadzi do wyzwolenia się z wszelkich uprzedzeń.Chrześcijanie oraz ci, którzy nimi kiedyś byli, żyją w otoczeniu kultur oraz niechrześcijańskich tradycji religijnych. Przez wieki kultury i religie niechrześcijańskie zajmowały określone terytoria geograficzne o ściśle wyznaczonych granicach. Współcześnie obecne są one „w rozproszeniu” na wszystkich kontynentach świata. Integralną częścią kultur niechrześcijańskich są religie. Każda z nich wyróżnia się oryginalną doktryną, specyficznym kultem i moralnością, nadto specyficzną organizacją z określoną władzą na czele. Wyznawcy różnych religii oraz zwolennicy określonych ideologii żyją w tych samych środowiskach – multikulturowych kręgach.Fenomen „inności” wpisany jest w dzieje ludzkości oraz cywilizacji i kultury. Już opisy antropogenezy, podawane przez różne tradycje religijne ludzkości, wypowiadają się o tym, co „inne”, a co tworzy jakąś bardziej lub mniej zwartą całość. Człowiek nigdy nie byłby sobą, gdyby wokół niego zabrakło „innych”. Dzięki nim jesteśmy sobą.Wiek XX był czasem eskalacji nienawiści do „innego”. Wygenerowana została ona przez utopijne systemy gloryfikujące jednych ludzi, a unicestwiające drugich. Utopie, fikcje filozoficzne, mitologie XX stulecia były wykwitem wcześniejszych aberracji myśli ludzkiej. Druga połowa tego stulecia była czasem otrząsania się ze skutków wojen zawsze będących apoteozą przemocy, okrucieństwa, bezwzględności.Droga integracji wyznaczona może być wśród „innych” przez: odkrywanie zapoznanego braterstwa, „oczyszczanie pamięci”, afirmację tożsamości własnej i cudzej, tolerancję. Sposobem pokonywania obcości i metodą integracji jest dialog, w jego różnych wyrazach i formach.Księgą dialogu oraz „integracji” starożytnych kultur oraz człowieka z Bogiem była Biblia. Dzieło to ogniskowało przez wieki wiele różnych kultur. Pismo Święte stanowi księgę dialogu człowieka z Bogiem oraz dzieło „integracji” kultur. Wzorem dialogu oraz integracji jest Jezus Chrystus. Ewangelie doskonale ilustrują sposób dialogu Jezusa. Jego spotkania z „innymi” ludźmi nie były nigdy obojętne. Jezus nigdy nikogo nie odrzucał. Zawsze otwarty był na dialog, również najtrudniejszy. Jezus Chrystus objawia się tu bardzo wyraźnie jako Ten, który „integruje” człowieka z samym sobą, z drugim człowiekiem, z mniejszą czy większą społecznością ludzką – od rodziny poczynając, na narodzie i Kościele kończąc. Jest wzorem integracji w jej różnych wzorcach, odniesieniach czy ucieleśnieniach.
    Cultural and religious pluralism has become a fact in the West. Actually, old European states have hosted not only “native people” but also the “others.” With time those “other” people – representatives of different cultures and religions – were becoming “natives” in a sense. The experience of pluralism in public life involves getting to know one another, which leads to the elimination of prejudices.Christians and those who used to be Christians live side by side with various non-Christian cultures and traditions. Over the ages, non-Christian cultures and religions occupied specific geographic territories with strictly defined boundaries. At present, they are distributed across all continents. Religions are an integral part of non-Christian cultures. Each of them is characterised by an original doctrine, unique cult, morality and organisation with a particular authority at the helm. Followers of various religions and specific ideologies live in the same environments, i.e. multicultural milieux.The phenomenon of “otherness” is part and parcel of human history, civilisation and culture. Descriptions of anthropogenesis, offered by various religious traditions, already identify what is “other” and what forms a more or less coherent whole. Human beings would not be their real selves if no “others” were around them. We are who we are thanks to “others.”The 20th century was a time of a raging hatred of the “other”, generated by utopian systems glorifying some people while annihilating others. Utopias, philosophical fictions and mythologies of the 20th century were the quintessence of the aberrations of human thought. The second half of that century saw the gradual recovery from the effects of wars that are always a culmination of violence, cruelty and ruthlessness.The path of integration can be found by discovering forgotten brotherhood, reinterpreting the past and overcoming the prejudices and grudges resulting from the bad past, affirming the identity of one’s own and others, and tolerance. Dialogue, in its various forms and manifestations, is a means to overcome strangeness and establish community ties.Since ancient times, the Bible has been the book of dialogue and “integration” between ancient cultures, and between human beings and God. Jesus Christ is a model for dialogue and integration as vividly illustrated by the Gospel. Jesus never rejected anyone and He was never indifferent to “other” people. He was always open to dialogue even if it was very difficult. Jesus Christ appears very clearly as the one who integrates human beings with themselves, with other human beings as well as small communities such as the family and large communities such as nations and the Church. He is a model of community integration in its various references and manifestations.

    The paper analyses two complex cultural processes that are present in the sphere of religious life: process of secularisation, and process of religious pluralism, both of which are shown from the sociological point of view on the basis of rich specialist literature. The author argues with the thesis of global secularisation. He refers it, above all, to the societies of Western Europe, and analyses some aspects internal and external crisis of religiosity. Both main processes presented in the paper may become a broad research inspiration for sociologists of religion. Owing to an objective diagnosis of the situation of the Church, they may be the field of changes with regard to the organisation of religious life.

    In this article I claim that there is a hidden assumption of the demonic character of God in the exclusivist and inclusivist theism. Exclusivism and inclusivism assume that God is partial and in fact does not care about most people in the world, choosing to reveal himself fully only in one part of the world. This kind of neglect for other people reflects the standard ethnocentrism and seems to be an expression of it. The only way to avoid the view that God is demonic is to accept the religious pluralism. The idea of religion would need to be changed: from the idea of religion as a place of revelation of God to the idea of religion as a place for searching for God. Accepting religious pluralism would lead, however, to the destruction of religions as we know them, since the core of their doctrines is based on the assumption of their superiority.

    The article consists of two parts. Part one presents various philosophical and theological standpoints concerning the case of plurality of religions. Part two concerns the possibility of philosophical appraisal of various religions. The philosophical background makes it possible to say that each religion has its subjective reasons in the ontic structure of human being. Philosophical solutions can be useful for discussions concerning the object of religion, the doctrinal truth, coherence and consistency and also credibility of revelation.

    Każda religia ma własną wizję Boga/bogów i oryginalną wykładnię prawd wiary, która odróżnia ją od innych systemów religijnych czy konkretnych wyznań. Religijna panorama to kalejdoskop zmieniających się form, które dzielą się, łączą, przekształcają i pojawiają ponownie, nieustannie ze sobą konkurując. W XXI wieku wbrew dziewiętnastowiecznemu przeświadczeniu, że wraz z postępem nauki i rozwojem świeckich ideologii religia zaniknie, ona nadal trwa i przeżywa swoisty renesans. W różnych częściach świata powstają nowe ruchy religijnych innowacji. W Polsce wymiernym świadectwem sukcesywnie powiększającej się sceny religijnej jest wydłużający się z roku na rok rejestr Kościołów i innych związków wyznaniowych. Stare i nowe odsłony religii i duchowości, trudne do zliczenia i imiennego nazwania, dowodzą niezmienności natury ludzkiej w dążeniu do rozpoznania i zaspokojenia duchowej wrażliwości.
    Each religion has its own vision of God/gods and an original interpretation of the truths of faith, which distinguishes it from other religious systems or specific religions. A religious panorama is a kaleidoscope of changing forms that share, connect, transform and reappear, constantly competing with each other. In the twenty-first century, contrary to the nineteenth-century conviction that religion will disappear with the progress of science and the development of secular ideologies, it is still going on and is experiencing a specific renaissance. In different parts of the world new movements of religious innovations are emerging. In Poland, a measurable testimony to the gradually growing religious scene is the register of churches and other religious associations, which is being extended from year to year. Old and new versions of religion and spirituality, difficult to count and name by name, prove the unchangeability of human nature in the pursuit of recognition and satisfaction of spiritual sensitivity.

    Artykuł podejmuje próbę weryfikacji tezy: Współczesne społeczeństwo czeskie nie jest ateistyczne, nie jest też modelowym przykładem gwałtownej sekularyzacji. Przemiany zachodzące w społeczeństwie czeskim mają postać wielokierunkowych przemian religijności (transformacji), choć z silnymi tendencjami sekularyzacyjnymi. Świadczą o miękkiej, ale długotrwałej sekularyzacji, wyrażającej się w pluralizacji form religijnych, która utworzyła specyficzną i złożoną postawę współczesnego społeczeństwa czeskiego wobec religii.
    The article is an attempt to verify the thesis that contemporary Czech society is not an atheistic one, but can be a model example of multi-directional fierce secularization. The changes which occur in the Czech society are turning towards the shape of a multi-directional change of religiosity (transformation) with strong tendencies to secularization. They provide proofs of a soft, nevertheless, continuing secularization expressed in the pluralism of forms of religion which created a specific and complicated attitude of contemporary Czech society toward religion.

    The article constitutes a continuation of the discussion between Henry Hardy and myself, which was initiated in AFPiFS in 2019 as a result of my publishing a review of Hardy’s book: In Search of Isaiah Berlin: A Literary Adventure (2018). In the present commentary I address again the nub of our disagreement, that is the relationship between Berlin’s pluralism and universalist religions, like Christianity and Islam. According to Hardy pluralism undermines universalist religions. I distance myself from his standpoint and argue that it is possible to reconcile adherence to pluralist perspective in ethics with religious belief. Besides, I return to the objection raised in my review of Hardy’s book and take up the thread of conflicts within values. I sustain my charge that Hardy does not take seriously enough the implications of conflicts within single values.
    Artykuł jest kontynuacją dyskusji, jaka rozwinęła się w 2019 roku na łamach AFPiFS między Henrym Hardym i mną po opublikowaniu przygotowanej przeze mnie recenzji książki Hardy’ego In Search of Isaiah Berlin: A Literary Adventure (2018). W komentarzu do odpowiedzi Hardy’ego ustosunkowuję się do kluczowego przedmiotu naszego sporu, to jest do relacji między pluralizmem wartości i uniwersalistycznymi religiami. Hardy utrzymuje, że pluralizm z zasady podważa tego rodzaju religie, ja zaś nie podzielam tego stanowiska i argumentuję za możliwością zharmonizowania optyki pluralistycznej z perspektywą religijną. Podejmuję ponadto wątek konfliktów, do których niekiedy dochodzi w obrębie poszczególnych wartości. Tym samym powracam do wysuniętego w mojej niegdysiejszej recenzji zarzutu dotyczącego niedostatecznej wagi, jaką Hardy przypisał w swej książce tego typu konfliktom. Podtrzymuję swoją obiekcję, eksponując doniosłe konsekwencje kolizji wewnątrz wartości.

    This paper attempts to outline the issue of “territory”, and other related conceptual categories such as “space”, in religious studies. Based on recent as well as older publications, it critically addresses current debates on the ambiguous status of “territory”. In such discussions, the world is generally described in terms of cultural and religious flows, subjected to deterritorialization processes. However, relocating “space” and “territory” to the forefront of Social Sciences and Religious Studies is urgent, as evidenced empirically and theoretically: it appears that opposing the shifting paradigms of “deterritorialization” on the one hand, and “spatial turn” on the other, stems from epistemological inaccuracies, rather than from a solid ground of empirically-observed religious realities. Hence, this paper offers a series of critical rejoinders to the opposed paradigms of “deterritorialization” and “spatial turn” in religious studies.
    Autor artykułu podejmuje próbę zarysu problemu „terytorium” i innych powiązanych kategorii pojęciowych, takich jak „przestrzeń”, w religioznawstwie. Na podstawie ostatnio wydanych jak i starszych publikacji, krytycznie odnosi się do bieżących debat na temat dwuznacznego statusu „terytorium”. W takich dyskusjach świat jest ogólnie opisany jako kulturowe i religijne przepływy poddane procesom deterytorializacji. Wymogiem współczesności jest jednak uczynienie z „przestrzeni” i „terytorium” pierwszoplanowych przedmiotów zainteresowania nauk społecznych i religioznawstwa, co znajduje uzasadnienie w racjach o charakterze empirycznym i teoretycznym. Wydaje się, że zmieniające się paradygmaty „deterytorializacji” z jednej strony i swego rodzaju „zwrot przestrzenny” z drugiej, wynikają z epistemologicznych nieścisłości, a nie z solidnej, empirycznie potwierdzonej obserwacji rzeczywistości religijnych. Stąd też Autor formułuje szereg krytycznych ocen dotyczących przeciwnych paradygmatów „deterytorializacji” i „zwrotu przestrzennego”.

    Tematem artykułu są sposoby pogłębiania wiary religijnej przez Polonię związaną z polskimi parafiami i ośrodkami duszpasterskimi we Francji. Źródłem informacji są badania empiryczne zrealizowane w 2019 r. Wykorzystanymi wskaźnikami pogłębiania wiary była praktyka modlitwy prywatnej, modlitwy wspólnej z rodziną, rozmowy na tematy religijne z bliskimi i nieznajomymi oraz udział w parafialnej katechezie dorosłych. Pytano również o takie metody rozwijania wiary jak: słuchanie kazań, czytanie Pisma Świętego, udział w pielgrzymkach, udział w spotkaniach grup modlitewnych, korzystanie z religijnych stron internetowych, czytanie książek religijnych, oglądanie programów religijnych w telewizji, słuchanie religijnych audycji radiowych, czytanie prasy religijnej, rozmowy z księżmi na tematy religijne. Podjętą problematyka sytuuje się w ramach socjologii wychowania. Źródłem informacji są natomiast badania wstępne zrealizowane w trzech polskich parafiach we Francji. Miały one na celu weryfikację narzędzia badawczego, co jest konieczną procedurą w przygotowaniu badań podstawowych. Nie są to badania reprezentatywne, natomiast pokazują kondycję wychowania religijnego w badanej populacji. Według nich ponad połowa respondentów interesuje się pogłębianiem swojej wiary i podejmuje różne działania, aby ją rozwijać. Reprezentują oni religijność kościelną. Argumentem dla podjęcia tematyki wychowania religijnego wśród Polonii francuskiej jest pluralizm religijny francuskiego społeczeństwa oraz idea Polaka-katolika. Są to zasadnicze konteksty edukacji religijnej tej grupy emigrantów, które zostały rozwinięte w niniejszym artykule.
    The subject of this article are ways of deepening faith by the Polish community in France, which is associated with Polish parishes. In the study, the indicators of the development of faith were private prayer, prayer with family, conversations on religious topics, participation in catechesis, listening to sermons, reading the Holy Bible, participation in religious pilgrimages, reading religious websites, reading religious books, watching religious programs on TV, listening to religious radio broadcasts, reading religious press, conversations with priests on religious topics. This issue is located in the sociology of education. The source of information are pilot studies that were carried out in 2019 in three Polish parishes in France. They were to verify the survey, which is a necessary procedure in the preparation of basic research. These are not representative studies, but in this article they show the condition of religious education in the studied population. According to them, more than half of the respondents are interested in deepening their faith and take various actions to develop it. They represent orthodox religiosity. An argument for undertaking the subject of religious education among French Polonia is the religious pluralism of French society and the idea of a Catholic Pole. These are the main contexts of religious education for this group of emigrants.

    Od pierwszych dni pontyfikatu papieża Franciszka katolicy na całym świecie usiłują zrozumieć intencje, które przyświecają następcy Piotra, kiedy zabiera głos w istotnych dla nauczania Kościoła kwestiach. U wielu katolików niektóre elementy nauczania Franciszka rodzą niepokój, u innych zdziwienie, a jeszcze inni entuzjastycznie je aprobują. Tekst jest próbą analizy niektórych elementów nauczania Franciszka i genetycznego pochodzenia głoszonych treści, które implikują niewierność przyjętemu nauczaniu Magisterium. Wśród analizowanych tematów są podejmowane przez papieża zagadnienia: rozumienie Kościoła, prymat Piotra, małżeństwo katolickie, dialog międzyreligijny, ekologia. Autor poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy papież odczytuje znaki czasu i dostosowuje nauczanie Kościoła do mentalności i realiów życia współczesnego człowieka, czy też dokonuje przewrotu, który może przynieść trudne do przewidzenia konsekwencje.
    From the first days of Pope Francis’ pontificate, Catholics around the world have been trying to understand the intentions of the Successor of Peter when he speaks on issues important to the teaching of the Church. For many Catholics, some elements of Francis’ teaching are disturbing, others are surprised, and still others enthusiastically endorse them. This text is an attempt to analyze some elements of Francis’ teaching and the genetic origin of the proclaimed content, which imply an infidelity to the accepted teaching of the Magisterium. The topics analyzed include the following issues raised by the Pope: understanding of the Church and the primacy of Peter, Catholic marriage, interreligious dialogue, and ecology. The author is looking for an answer to the question of whether the Pope reads the signs of the times and adjusts the teaching of the Church to the mentality and realities of modern life, or whether he is staging a coup that may bring consequences that are difficult to predict.

    Artykuł podejmuje problematykę dialogu międzyreligijnego, zainicjowanego przez Sobór Watykański II. Omawiane dokumenty Kościoła wskazują na „zarodki Słowa” oraz elementy prawdy i świętości obecne w innych religiach. Jednakowoż działanie Ducha Świętego wśród wyznawców innych religii (teksty święte, doktryna, obrzędy) zakłada powszechną wolę zbawczą Boga oraz uniwersalizm jedynego Pośrednika pomiędzy Bogiem i ludźmi – Jezusa Chrystusa. Dlatego też otwarcie się na religie, zwłaszcza judaizm i islam, nie zwalnia chrześcijan od obowiązku dawania świadectwa wiary, prowadzenia misji ad gentes oraz systematycznej ewangelizacji świata. Wychodząc od analizy najważniejszych dokumentów Kościoła traktujących o innych religiach autor próbuje określić: (1) relację pomiędzy teologią religii a misjologią, (2) związek pomiędzy wartościami duchowymi innych religiach a dziełem zbawczym Jezusa Chrystusa, głoszonym przez Kościół.
    Many documents of the Church, especially issued by and since the Second Vatican Council, recognise ”the seeds of the Word” and elements of truth and holiness present in various religions. Workings of the Holy Spirit in their scriptures, doctrines and rituals presuppose the universal nature of Christ’s mediation between God and human race. While being open to various religious traditions, especially Judaism and Islam, Christians may not relax on giving witness to their faith, mission ad gentes and systematic evangelisation of the world. Based on his reading of the Church’s most important documents on other religions, the author of the essay undertakes to establish (1) relationship between theology of religion and missiology, and (2) connection between spiritual values of other religions and the salvific work of Jesus Christ as proclaimed by the Catholic Church.

    The issue of religious tolerance is increasingly raised in a globalized world with societies becoming more and more religiously diverse and inhomogeneous. Religious tolerance can be defined as the practice of accepting others as acting in accordance with their religious belief system. Philosophers have recently begun to study more thoroughly the relationship between religious pluralism and religious (in)tolerance with a main focus on the epistemic question of whether the recognition of and reflection on religious pluralism might lead to greater religious tolerance. The major thrust of this idea is that any genuine reflection of a person about her epistemic peers adhering to other religions will weaken the person’s epistemic justificatory basis for believing that her own religious beliefs are better warranted than the religious beliefs of her peers. The rational consequence of the recognition of this justificatory fact, in turn, should lead to more religious tolerance and to a weakened dismissive attitude towards adherents of other religions. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the plausibility of this account against the background of existing empirical, in particular psychological literature: Does increased contact with adherents of other religious traditions indeed lead to more tolerance? How are we able to show a deeper understanding for people with different religious beliefs and to take on—at least partially—their perspective? What are potential psychological obstacles to these achievements? Resources from research on intergroup toleration, social identity-theories, developmental psychology and personality traits will be used for tackling these questions. This shall help to broaden the so far rather narrow epistemic philosophical perspective on religious pluralism and (in)tolerance by embedding it into the larger context of constitutive traits of the human psyche.
    Kwestia tolerancji religijnej nabiera coraz większego znaczenia w zglobalizowanym świecie, w którym społeczeństwa stają się coraz bardziej zróżnicowane i niejednorodne. Tolerancję religijną można zdefiniować jako praktykę akceptowania innych jako postępujących zgodnie z ich religijnym systemem przekonań. Filozofowie przystąpili ostatnio do dokładniejszych badań nad relacją między pluralizmem religijnym a religijną (nie)tolerancją, koncentrując się na pytaniu epistemicznym, czy uznanie pluralizmu religijnego i namysł nad nim może prowadzić do większej tolerancji religijnej. Główna idea, która im przyświeca, jest taka, że przeprowadzony przez osobę namysł nad tym, że osoby, które są z nią równorzędne pod względem epistemicznym, osłabi jej epistemiczne uzasadnienie dla jej przekonania, iż jej własne przekonania religijne są lepiej uzasadnione niż przekonania religijne osób, które są z nią epistemicznie równorzędne. Racjonalną konsekwencją uznania tego faktu dotyczącego uzasadnienia powinna być tolerancja religijna i mniej lekceważące podejście do zwolenników innych religii. Głównym celem tego tekstu jest zbadanie wiarygodności tej koncepcji na tle istniejącej literatury empirycznej, a zwłaszcza psychologicznej. Czy większy kontakt ze zwolennikami innych tradycji religijnych rzeczywiście prowadzi do większej tolerancji? W jaki sposób jesteśmy w stanie lepiej zrozumieć ludzi o innych przekonaniach religijnych i – przynajmniej częściowo – przyjąć ich punkt widzenia? Jakie możliwe przeszkody psychologiczne stoją temu na przeszkodzie? Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, Autor odwołuje się do wyników badań na temat tolerancji międzygrupowej, psychologii rozwojowej i cech osobowości. Celem jest poszerzenie jak dotychczas dość wąskiej epistemicznej perspektywy filozoficznej na pluralizm religijny i (nie)tolerancję przez wpisanie jej w szerszy kontekst konstytutywnych cech ludzkiej psyche.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest podejście do kwestii pluralizmu religijnego oraz międzyreligijnych oddziaływań właściwe dla tradycjonalizmu integralnego reprezentowanego przez R. Guenona, F. Schuona, A.K. Coomaraswamy. Celem rozważań jest wyeksponowanie różnic pomiędzy punktem widzenia tradycjonalizmu a synkretyzmem i stanowiskiem Kościoła katolickiego. Pierwsza część artykułu dotyczy zasadniczych idei tradycjonalizmu, które mogą być pojmowane jako fundament dla jego teorii religii (pojęcie Boga, poznania, prawdy). W drugiej części rozważona jest koncepcja transcendentalnej jedności religii oraz roli oddziaływań międzyreligijnych. Całą pracę podsumowuje krótka analiza zaprezentowanych tez.
    The purpose of this paper is an issue of religious pluralism and inter-religious impacts typocal for the integral tradictionalism represented by R. Guenon, F. Schuon and A.K.Coomaraswamy. The aim of this study is to expose differences between the points of view of traditionalism and syncretism as well as the Catholic Church. The first part concerns essential tradistionalistic concepts which can be regarded as a foundation of its religious theory (the notion of God, cognition, the truth). The second part involves an idea of transcendent unity of religion and a role of inter-religious influences. Finally, there is a short analysis of the presented theses.

    The main point of this article is John Hick’s conception of rational theistic belief without proof and its critics. By the analogy between sense experience and religious experience Hick build the inference leading to conclusion that the religious experience is like sense experience reliable foundation for rationally of beliefs. So although religious beliefs have non proofs, for instance for existence of God, they are rational. Critics, like C. R. Brakenhielm, T. R. Mathis, R. W. Perrett review this inference and conclusion. Especially are attacking analogy between sense experience and religious experience, by negation of possibility of the private language and possibility of solipsistic alternative for sense experience.

    Artykuł wyjaśnia różne spojrzenia na religie świata. Jego głównym celem jest analiza inkluzywizmu religijnego jako najbardziej powszechnego podejścia do innych religii we współczesnej debacie teologicznej nad religiami. Artykuł zwraca szczególną uwagę na rozwój modelu chrystocentrycznego w Kościele katolickim, odnosząc się najpierw do wczesnych ojców Kościoła, a następnie do teologii Logosu. Analiza pokazuje, że teologia Logosu w historii była zawsze obecna w katolickim podejściu do wierzących inaczej obok ekskluzywistycznego aksjomatu extra ecclesiam nulla salus (poza Kościołem nie ma zbawienia). Później ta inkluzywistyczna teologia znalazła swoje zastosowanie w „teorii wypełnienia” Jeana Danielou, w idei „anonimowego chrześcijaństwa” Karla Rahnera, w stanowisku II Soboru Watykańskiego w sprawie innych tradycji religijnych oraz w posoborowym oficjalnym nauczaniu Kościoła. Artykuł kończy się oceną złożoności, wyzwań i nieuniknionych słabych punktów chrystocentrycznego podejścia do innych religii.
    The article first explains various perspectives on the world religions. Its main focus is on the inclusivist perspective as the most common approach in the debate on religions. Here special attention is given to the development of the Christocentric model in the Catholic Church referring first to the early Church Fathers and afterwards to Logos theology. The analysis shows that the theology of the Logos was always present in Catholic attitudes towards other believers throughout history alongside the exclusivist axiom extra ecclesiam nulla salus (outside the Church no salvation). Later, this inclusivist theology was echoed in the „fulfilment theory” of Jean Danielou, „anonymous Christianity” of Karl Rahner, the Second Vatican Council’s stand on other faiths, and in the post-conciliar official Church teaching. The article ends with evaluation of the complexity, challenges and unavoidable shortcomings of the Christocentric approach to other religions.

    The article is focused on Theological Philosophy constructed by Peter van Inwagen and modern Fundamental Theology which has been cultivated at KUL. Both disciplines try to present reasonable justification for Christian fundamental convictions. P. van Inwagen − specially in his book God, Knowledge, and Mystery: Essays in Philosophical Theology − knowing well modern philosophy and the mentality of people living today tries to legitimate the main Christian beliefs. He writes about how Christians can justify the existence of personal God, he legitimates the authority of the Bible (which is questionable according to some scientific theories) and he defends the specific position of the Christian Church among other religions. In conclusion he suggests that Christian beliefs are not certain for non-Christians but it does not mean that they are not reasonable and acceptable. Fundamental Theology cultivated at KUL is very similiar to P. van Inwagen's project in some points. But in some other aspects his position should be deepened.

    Opis:
    Study of religion describes, analyzes and compares how certain human beings do in fact express their faith in terms of particular scriptures, religious figures, sacred rituals, community solidarity, etc. — and how all these explicitly religious phenomena may relate to other aspects of people’s lives. It also aspires and addresses the questions to be even-handed, objective, based on evidence that may be checked by any competent inquirer, and non-committal on claims to divine revelation and authority. It is in principle comparative, not in a judgmental evaluative sense, but in terms of describing and analysing comparable elements or phenomena from various religious traditions, using the same criteria in each case. The paper begins with a brief report on the study of religion in the context of India and presents in detail Rabindranath Tagore’s (1861–1941) views on the need, an objective and philosophy behind the comparative study of religion. As Tagore observes, when studying religion one usually chooses among two alternative approaches: to do research on the secret text or to study the rituals. Tagore accepts fully none of them and instead suggests to rediscover how human aspiration for transcendence works in practice, how it sustains the individual — often marginalized by the power of institutionalised religion — and society, and how it generates new cultural forms. For Tagore, the essence of religion lies is the will to transcend the limit of the self-cantered being towards an ideal of perfection — which he calls divinity of Man. His understanding of the “religion of Man”, as he puts it, is discussed in the major part of the paper.

    On 2 September 2004, at the start of the new school year in France, a law was enacted banning all religious symbols and garb in public schools. The media interpreted this law as focused on the khimar (headscarves) that Muslim girls wear as part of hijab (modesty). On 14 September 2010, a ban on covering one's face in public followed. Such legal action, limiting religious freedom, is gaining traction among European nation-states partly due to their inability to deal with religious diversity in a constructive way, partly fuelled by a fear of religious extremism. According to the developing study of complexity theory in philosophy, however, dealing with religious diversity in such a way will only lead to a larger rift between nation-states and religious extremists; decreasing the meaningfulness and limiting the resilience of societies. This paper, attempts to track ways around such limiting legal moves by revisiting Derrida’s 1996 speech at the International Parliament of Writers published as On Cosmopolitanism. Employing an idea from Derrida’s address and supplementing it with one from Žižek, I will show how cities might become spaces that challenge austere and protective legal measures, enacted against religions, by European nation-states.
    W dniu 2 września 2004 roku, na początku nowego roku szkolnego, została we Francji uchwalona ustawa zakazująca noszenia ostentacyjnych symboli i strojów religijnych w szkołach publicznych. Media przyjęły, że zakaz ten koncentruje się na chustach (khimar), które muzułmańskie dziewczynki noszą jako część hidżabu. W dniu 14 września 2010 roku, wszedł w życie kolejny zakaz obejmujący zakrywanie twarzy w miejscach publicznych. Tego rodzaju działania, ograniczające wolność religijną, zyskują zwolenników w państwach europejskich. Dzieje się tak częściowo ze względu na trudności w radzeniu sobie z różnorodnością religijną w sposób konstruktywny, a częściowo napędzane jest przez strach wobec religijnego ekstremizmu. Jednakże według rozwijających się badań teorii złożoności w filozofii, radzenie sobie z różnorodnością religijną w taki sposób, doprowadzi jedynie do radykalizacji podziałów społecznych.

    Il s’agit d’une interrogation qui inquiète beaucoup, car - et le constat est déjà ancien - la sécularisation de la société française a livré une conception de la laïcité soumise à la fois aux politiques d’intégration et bousculée par les diversités religieuses.
    Pytania dotyczące obecności religii w przestrzeni publicznej Francji należą dziś do szczególnie aktualnych. Wobec europejskiego kryzysu imigracyjnego nie można rezygnować z prób udzielenia odpowiedzi o adekwatność stosowanych dziś rozwiązań. Współcześnie realizowana we Francji koncepcja laickości wyjaśniana jest bowiem często z odwołaniem się do wymogów polityki integracji oraz potrzeb i nacisków różnych grup religijnych. Wobec dokonujących się zmian, postrzeganych często i nie bez podstaw jako zagrożenie dla porządku publicznego, należałoby rozpocząć od zrewidowania pojęć, często mylnie rozumianych, które od wejścia w życie ustawy z 9 grudnia 1905 roku określają obszary wytyczone dla religii. Dotycząca tych kwestii praca badawcza wymaga konfrontacji sytuacji historycznej ze współczesnością. Takie porównanie pozwala na uwypuklenie elementów stanowiących nowość, związanych ze zjawiskiem, które można określić jako wypaczanie świadomości społeczeństw świata zachodniego. W celu naświetlenia tej sytuacji należy wziąć również pod uwagę najistotniejsze różnice istniejące pomiędzy religiami, na których koncentrowali się twórcy unormowań z 1905 roku oraz tymi, które w Europie Zachodniej odgrywają dziś coraz większą rolę w konsekwencji ruchów migracyjnych. Należy przede wszystkim podkreślić małą adekwatność stosowania do nich tych samych reguł, które odnosi się do chrześcijaństwa. Przyjmują one bowiem często koncepcje teokratyczne i nie akceptują rozróżnienia sfery sacrum i profanum.
    Questions concerning the presence of religion in the public space of France are today particularly valid. The attempts to answer questions about the appropriateness of the current solutions cannot be given up in the face of European crisis concerning the issue of immigration. The concept of secularism currently implemented in France is in fact often explained with reference to the requirements of integration policy and the needs and pressure from various religious groups. Regarding the current changes, seen often, and not without a reason, as a threat to public order, the discussion should start with the revision of concepts, often mistakenly understood, that have defined the areas of religion since the entry into force of the Act of 9 December 1905. The research of these issue requires a juxtaposition of the present and a historical situation. Such a comparison highlights any new elements that are associated with the phenomenon, which can be described as an act of distorting the consciousness of societies of the Western world. In the light of this situation the essential differences between religions should be also taken into account; those on which the creators of regulations from 1905 focused and those which in Western Europe today play an increasingly important role in the consequences of migration. The same rules that apply to Christianity cannot be applied to them because often they take on the theocratic concepts and do not accept the distinction between the sacred and the profane.

    Celem artykułu jest krytyczne omówienie wyroku Europejskiego Trybunału Praw Człowieka w sprawie Sessa przeciwko Włochom. Odnosząc się do innych orzeczeń organów strasburskich, a także do wyroku Trybunału Sprawiedliwości Wspólnot Europejskich w sprawie Prais przeciwko Radzie, Autor dochodzi do wniosku, że w omawianym przypadku sędziom Europejskiego Trybunału Praw Człowieka nie udało się właściwie wyważyć wchodzących w grę racji.
    This article analyses to discuss the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in Francesco Sessa v. Italy. Referring to other decisions of the Strasbourg authorities, and also to the judgement of the European Court of Justice in Vivien Prais v Council of the European Communities, the author concludes that in this case the judges of the European Court of Human Rights human failed to properly balance the interests of the parties involved.

    In contemporary Russia, on the one hand, there is a marked tendency towards re-strengthening of Orthodox Church. On the other hand, new patterns of religion and religious behaviour are manifest. This paper examines the alternative moral discourse in framework of “right-wing” religious practices in Ural region. Taking a comparative approach to religiosity, this investigation deals with different trajectories taken by Old-believers and Neopagans in Ural region to create new moral and social order for contemporary Russia. How do the people of different religious denominations within limits of region want to arrange their place, what do they aspire to, what do they want to express, and by what means? How do they create and maintain social cohesion? How do they express mutual acceptance and recognition, and how do they withhold it? These problems can obviously be described in terms of continuity and change, since religious models are either to be borrowed from some close or distant sources or to be elaborated anew according to particular social and ideological contexts.
    We współczesnej Rosji, z jednej strony istnieje wyraźna tendencja do ponownego umocnienia Kościoła Prawosławnego, z drugiej strony, ujawniają się nowe wzorce religii i zachowań religijnych. Artykuł analizuje alternatywny nurt zauważalny w odniesieniu do kwestii moralnych w ramach wybranych wspólnot religijnych w regionie Uralu. Przyjmując porównawcze podejście do religijności, w artykule Autorka rozpatruje różne ujęcia przyjmowane przez staroobrzędowców i neopogan w celu stworzenia nowego porządku moralnego i społecznego dla współczesnej Rosji. Autorka próbuje odpowiedzieć przede wszystkim na następujące pytania: w jaki sposób ludzie różnych wyznań chcą zorganizować zamieszkiwaną przestrzeń? Co pragną osiągnąć, co i w jaki sposób chcą wyrazić? W jaki sposób tworzą i utrzymują spójność społeczną? Jak wyrażają wzajemną akceptację i uznanie, i jak je utrzymują? Problemy te mogą być opisane za pomocą odwołania się do reguł ciągłości i zmiany, gdyż modele religijne są albo zapożyczone z bliskich lub odległych źródeł albo opracowane na nowo w zgodzie z konkretnymi ideologicznymi i społecznymi kontekstami.

    The article discusses Henry Hardy’s book In Search of Isaiah Berlin: A Literary Adventure, published in the fall of 2018. The author was Berlin’s closest collaborator and is the editor or co-editor of eighteen volumes of his works and four volumes of his letters. The first part of the book is a memoir, here discussed briefly; the main focus is on the second, philosophical, section. Hardy’s investigations into Berlin’s ideas are analysed and criticised. Special attention is given to his unresolved discussion with Berlin on the relationship between pluralism and religion. A number of critical arguments against Hardy’s thesis of their mutual exclusion are put forward. The key argument is that it is possible for a true pluralist to adhere to a universalist religion. This is the same position as that adopted by Berlin.
    Artykuł podejmuje dyskusję z książką autorstwa Henry’ego Hardy’ego, In Search of Isaiah Berlin: A Literary Adventure, opublikowaną jesienią 2018 r. Jej autor był najbliższym współpracownikiem Berlina, a także redaktorem i współredaktorem osiemnastu tomów jego dzieł i czterech tomów jego listów. Pierwsza część książki ma charakter wspomnieniowy, w tym artykule omówiony krótko; główny nacisk położony został w książce na jej drugą, filozoficzną, sekcję. Podane analizie i krytyce zostają w niniejszym artykule dociekania Hardy’ego dotyczące idei Berlina, ze szczególną uwagą położoną na nierozstrzygniętą debatę podjętą z Berlinem na temat związków między pluralizmem a religią. Wysunięte zostaje kilka ważnych argumentów przeciwko tezie Hardy’ego o ich wzajemnym wykluczaniu się. Argumentem kluczowym jest argument za możliwością podążania przez rzeczywistego pluralistę za religią uniwersalną, które to stanowisko jest też stanowiskiem przyjętym przez Berlina.

    Pluralistic theology of religion is getting more and more popular in Poland. This kind of theology deals with such questions as: Are all religions equal? Does Christianity surpass all these religions? Is there any way to state clearly how one should relate to Jesus Christ today' word that strikes a balance between these two extremes? No set of questions concerns Christian theologians more today. No questions have more practical relevance in the religiously most pluralistic country in the world. No American theologian has kept these questions on the theological agenda over the past three decades with more consistency than Paul Knitter. And none is more expert in his or her knowledge of the field. He is the chief disseminator of these views. Paul F. Knitter is Paul Tillich Professor of Theology, World Religions and Culture at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York He was formerly Emeritus Professor of Theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a leading theologian of religious pluralism. He holds a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1966) and a doctorate from the University of Marburg, Germany (1972). Knitter's journey into interreligious dialogue began in 1964 when he was a seminarian in Rome and experienced the Second Vatican Council firsthand, at a time when the Roman Catholic Church declared its new attitude towards other religions. Since publishing his acclaimed book, No Other Name? (1985), Knitter has been widely known for his religious pluralism. Along with his friend and colleague, the Protestant philosopher of religion John Hick, Knitter has come under harsh criticism from Cardinal Ratzinger (presently the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church). Knitter is against using absolutist language to depict the Saviour in interreligious dialogue, and writes about the relational understanding of the uniqueness of Jesus: the Saviour is to be understood in relation to other saviours. Although Jesus is truly the Word of God, Knitter states that he is not the only word: he is God's universal, decisive and indispensable manifestation of saving truth and grace. According to Knitter, the creed and other Christian dogmas concerning Jesus are to be interpreted symbolically as expressions of the church's experience of Christ. Here Knitter's insight is contrary to the traditional church's teaching on Jesus as far as it has an ontological foundation. Knitter's teaching about the relational uniqueness of Jesus is naturally unacceptable to bishops, because it alters the way the faith is proclaimed and it also deviates from what is central to Christianity.

    Artykuł przedstawia charakterystykę religijności uczniów szkół średnich i studentów, którzy w badaniach socjologicznych zdeklarowali, że są głęboko wierzącymi. W opisie i wnioskowaniu sięgnięto do zastanych, choć relatywnie najmłodszych badań ogólnopolskich (2017 rok), które opisywały religijność w jej różnych wymiarach. Na opracowany portret pobożności składały się takie aspekty religijności jak: globalny stosunek do wiary, ideologia religijna, praktyki i moralność religijna oraz sensotwórcza rola religii. Został on uwyraźniony przez porównanie religijności głęboko wierzących z pobożnością wierzących i niezdecydowanych, ale przywiązanych do tradycji religijnej. Badania pokazują, że kategoria głęboko wierzących nie jest liczna, więc ich religijność nie jest powszechna. Pewne jej wymiary charakteryzuje wysoki poziom konformizmu wobec nauczania Kościoła, a inne są naznaczone selektywnością. To pierwszy typ religijności najczęstszy wśród głęboko wierzących. Mniejszość z nich prezentuje inny typ – kościelny, pozbawiony wybiórczości i możliwie najpełniej odwzorowujący instytucjonalny model pobożności. Te dwa typy religijności są także formami religijnego etosu i wpisują się w warunki pluralizmu społeczno-kulturowego w Polsce.
    The article presents the characteristics of the religiousness of high school and university students who declared themselves deeply religious in sociological research from 2017. The value of the study is that it shows different dimensions of religiousness. There are no newer studies of this type. The authors were interested in such dimensions of religiousness as the global attitude to faith, religious ideology, religious practices and morality, and the sense-creating role of religion. The religiousness of deeply believing individuals was also compared with the religiousness of believers who are undecided but attached to religious tradition. The analysis shows that the category of deep believers is not numerous, so their religiousness is not common. Some of its dimensions are characterised by a high level of conformity to the teaching of the Church, and others are marked by selectivity. This is the first type of religiousness most widespread among deeply believing people. A minority of them represent a different type – church religiousness. It is not selective and reflects the institutional model of piety as fully as possible. These two types of religiousness can also be forms of religious ethos and fit into the conditions of social and cultural pluralism in Poland.
