Opis:
Until recently it was believed that Navier’s boundary condition could be given as a rigorous foundation for slip phenomena. Due to the latest measurements in the mass flow rate of a gas flowing through nano- and microchannels, several discrepancies in the mathematical modelling have been found. Thus, in the literature, the opinion persists for the Navier slip condition to be correct only under certain circumstances, particularly those restricted to the first order boundary conditions. One of many ways to eliminate this discrepancy, which is extensively employed in the contemporary literature, is to develop a variety of the so-called second order boundary conditions. This path, however, seems incorrect since it lacks consistency between the bulk stress tensor and its boundary representation. In the paper we propose to replace the classical Navier slip condition with the new, more general Navier-Stokes slip boundary condition. Instead of the usual method of consideration, the boundary condition is presented as following from the mass and momentum balances within a thin, shell-like moving layer. Owing to this, the problem of consistency between the internal and external friction in a viscous fluid is solved within the framework of new layer balances, and a proper form of constitutive relations for friction and mobility forces. Finally, the common features of the Navier, Stokes, Maxwell and Reynolds concepts of a boundary slip layer are compared and revalorized. The classifications of different mobility mechanisms, important for flows in nano-, microchannels are also discussed.

The aim of this paper is to present the shape derivative for a wide array of objective functions using the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as a state constraint. Most real world applications of computational fluid dynamics are shape optimization problems in nature, yet special shape optimization techniques are seldom used outside the field of elliptic partial differential equations and linear elasticity. This article tries to be self contained, also presenting many useful results from the literature. We conclude with a comparison of different objective functions for the shape optimization of an obstacle in a channel, which can be done quite conveniently when one knows the general form of the shape gradient.

The paper presents a finite element code for compressible flow simulations. The code has two important features: adaptivity to increase accuracy of computations by selectively refining a finite element mesh and efficient parallel performance due to a special implementation based on concept of patches of elements. The algorithm for approximating the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is a version of the stabilized finite element method. Three time integration strategies are implemented, explicit, linear implicit and nonlinear implicit, and the GMRES method is used to solve systems of linear equations. For parallel simulations the code uses a special algorithm for mesh partition. The performance of the code is tested for two examples of supersonic flows: one inviscid and one viscous.

The regularity and stability of optimal controls of nonstationary Navier-Stokes equations are investigated. Under suitable assumptions every control satisfying first-order necessary conditions is shown to be a continuous function in both space and time. Moreover, the behaviour of a locally optimal control under certain perturbations of the cost functional and the state equation is investigated. Lipschitz stability is proven provided a second-order sufficient optimality condition holds.

The paper presents problems connected with solving 3D circulation problems. The existence of vortex singularities in the flow behind a body is a characteristic feature of such problems. The vortices influence the velocity and pressure fields in the vicinity of a body. A proposition of rational merging the methods based on the N-S equation together with vortex methods (based on the vorticity equation) is discussed. Such a connection enables accurate and efficient determination of vortex singularities in the flow behind a body.

A finite volume numerical method for the prediction of a fluid flow in complex geometries such as turbomachinery channels has been parallelized using a domain decomposition approach. A mathematical formulation of a 3-D incompressible steady flow has been presented on the basis of the N-S equations in a grid-oriented co-ordinate system with contravariant velocity components. A parallelized pressure-based implicit algorithm with discretization on a staggered grid has been developed. A message exchange system with a boundary exchange, developed by the authors, has been described. Exemplary calculations have been carried out for a laminar flow through a curved duct and for an inviscid flow through a stage of the centrifugal pump. A good agreement has been obtained in both the cases. Despite considerable simplification that has been introduced in the flow through the pump stage, the computations have shown nearly the same pressure rise in the stage as the measurements. Further directions of numerical investigations of a flow through turbomachines, including in particular those devoted to pressure losses related to the rotor-stator interaction, have been mentioned.

Opis:
The paper introduces a parametric integral equation system (PIES) for solving 2D boundary problems defined on connected polygonal domains described by the Navier-Lame equation. Parametric linear functions were applied in the PIES to define analytically the polygonal subregions' interfaces. Only corner points and additional extreme points on the interface between the connected subregions are posed to practically define a polygonal domain. An important advantage of this approach is that the number of such points is independent of the area of identically shaped domains due to the elimination of traditional elements from modeling, the number of those elements being dependent on the domain's surface area. In order to test the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method, test examples are included in which areas of displacements and stresses are analyzed in each subregion.

The aim of this paper is to simulate the laminar motion of viscous incompressible fluid and the transition between the laminar and the turbulent state in simply connected domains. The developed numerical algorithms are based on the solution of an initial-boundary value problem for the full incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, written in the form of a fourth-order equation for the stream function. The spatial derivatives and the boundary conditions are discretized on uniform grids by means of sixth-order compact schemes together with fourth-order finite-difference formulas, while the continuity of the time variable is preserved. The resulting system of ordinary differential equations has been integrated using the backward-differentiation predictor-corrector method. The efficiency of the numerical algorithms is demonstrated by solving two problems of viscous liquid plane flows in a square driven cavity and a backward-facing step. Calculations for the cavity flow configuration have been obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from Re=100 to Re=30000 on uniform 50×50 and 100×100 grids. Calculations for the backward-facing step have been made for Re ≤ 3000 with channel lengths, L, within the range 10-30, on 30L×30 uniform grids. The computed stream-function contours and velocity fields have been compared with numerical results reported in the literature.

As expected, the transmission condition generates a recirculation within the fluid in rest.

A 3D Navier-Stokes package for the time-accurate computation of unsteady flows in turbomachines with emphasis on wide applicability, portability and efficiency is presented. The package consists of three components: the elliptic grid generator FRAME, the parallelised implicit Reynolds- and Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes solver PANTA and the post-processor TREAT especially designed for unsteady flow phenomena. The applicability of the package covers both rotor/stator interaction and blade flutter phenomena in multirow and multipassage 2D, Quasi3D and general 3D configurations in a wide range of flow velocities (subsonic, transonic). For turbulent computations either a Low-Reynolds-Number k-" or k-! turbulence model is available. Additionally, an algebraic transition model can be chosen from a variety of different models to enhance the accuracy of prediction for transitional flow phenomena. A description of the underlying algorithms and numerical methods as well as the main features and characteristics of each of the three components is given. Furthermore, selected examples of typical turbomachinery applications are shown to demonstrate these features.

The former is solved with SIPMLE algorithm of finite difference method using Marker and Cell technique to trace a free surface movement. The latter is solved using the finite volume method. The dam-break (water column collapse) problem on horizontal bottom is investigated as a test case. The calculated results are compared with each other. The numerical simulations are examined against laboratory experiment presented by Koshizuka et al (1995). The possibility of using the described models to simulate rapidly varied flow is discussed.

It is difficult and essential to determine appropriate boundary conditions for the flow averages because they depend on the behavior of the unknown flow near the wall. Large-eddy simulation (LES) is one of the promising approaches. LES estimates local spatial averages ū of the velocity u of the fluid. The main problem is modeling near-wall turbulence in complex geometries. Inspired by the works of Navier and Maxwell, the boundary conditions are developed on the wall. In this study, the appropriate friction coefficient for 2-D laminar flows is computed, and existing boundary layer theories are used to improve numerical boundary conditions for flow averages. The slip with friction and penetration with resistance boundary conditions are considered. Numerical tests on two-dimensional channel flow across a step using this boundary condition on the top and bottom wall and the step are performed.

Knowledge about complex physical phenomena used in the casting process simulation requires continuous complementary research and improvement in mathematical modeling. The basic mathematical model taking into account only thermal phenomena often becomes insufficient to analyze the process of metal solidification, therefore more complex models are formulated, which include coupled heat-flow phenomena, mechanical or shrinkage phenomena. However, such models significantly complicate and lengthen numerical simulations; therefore the work is limited only to the analysis of coupled thermal and flow phenomena. The mathematical description consists then of a system of Navier-Stokes differential equations, flow continuity and energy. The finite element method was used to numerically modeling this problem. In computer simulations, the impact of liquid metal movements on the alloy solidification process in the casting-riser system was assessed, which was the purpose of this work, and the locations of possible shrinkage defects were pointed out, trying to ensure the right supply conditions for the casting to be free from these defects.

This work discusses geometric optimization problems governed by stationary Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal domains are proved to exist under the assumption that the family of admissible domains is bounded and satisfies the Lipschitz condition with a uniform constant, and in the absence of the uniqueness property for the state system. Through the parametrization of the admissible shapes by continuous functions defined on a larger universal domain, the optimization parameter becomes a control, i.e. an element of that family of continuous functions. The approximating extension technique via the penalization of the Navier-Stokes equation enables the approximation of the associated shape optimization problem by an optimal control problem. Results on existence and uniqueness are proved for the approximating problem and a gradient-type algorithm is indicated.

Opis:
A peniche is designed to offset a half-span aircraft model from the wind tunnel wall boundary layer. This strategy of model mounting results in large influence on the meas-ured aerodynamic coefficients, compared with full-span data, The negative influence is especially important in high-lift conditions leading to incorrect maximum lift behaviour, A very time-consuming set of python scripts was constructed to allow automatic meshing of the wing-body configuration of the DLR F11 high-lift model placed in the European Transonic Wind tunnel (ETW, Germany). Variations due to different concepts of model mountings (peniches) were included. A block-structured FLOWer solver (DLR, Germany) was used for all flow simulations, simplifying the mesh generation process by using the chimera overlapping grids technique, Preliminary results are available for a full-span configuration obtained with a symmetry condition at the mirror plane. Computations of the half-span model placed directly at the wall or mounted using a standard peniche are also presented.

We deal with the numerical simulation of flow through a steam turbine. The system of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations accompanied by the state equation of perfect gas are numerically solved. We propose a new approach for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, where the inviscid part is discretized by the finite volume method and the viscous part by the finite element method. To capture precisely the position of shock waves, the suitable mesh refinement method has to be applied. Therefore the anisotropic mesh adaptation technique equipped with some suitable modification for viscous compressible flow is used. The suitable application of the mentioned numerical adaptive method allows us to obtain sufficiently precise results without much requirement on CPU-time and computer memory.

The paper concerns mathematical modeling of free surface open-channel water flow. Two-dimensional vertical Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were used to simulate the flow. They were solved with the SIMPLE algorithm of the finite difference method using the Marker and Cell technique to trace free surface movement. The dam-break flow (water column collapse) problem on a horizontal and frictionless bottom was investigated as a test case. The mechanics of dam-break flow for wet and dry bed conditions was analyzed on the basis of numerical simulations. The obtained results are shown for varying head of water in the downstream channel. The possibility of using the shallow-water equations and the RANS model to simulate rapidly varied flows is discussed.

A general framework for calculating shape derivatives for domain optimization problems with partial differential equations as constraints is presented. The first order approximation of the cost with respect to the geometry perturbation is arranged in an efficient manner that allows the computation of the shape derivative of the cost without the necessity to involve the shape derivative of the state variable. In doing so, the state variable is only required to be Lipschitz continuous with respect to geometry perturbations. Application to shape optimization with the Navier-Stokes equations as PDE constraint is given.

This work contains the simulations results of Vortex Ring State appearance and evolution around main rotor of a helicopter. These calculations were based on solution of Navier-Stokes equations using the Fluent code. During this simulation An Actuator Disc model of fan has been used. This model assumes that a fan is a pressure jump generating surface. Two mashes has been used during this simulation: three dimensional and axisymmetrical two-dimensional. The most of the cases has been calculated using steady flow solutions, but unsteady model also has been applied. Main goal of this work was a calibration of model, in terms of simplifications influence on results, and also in comparison with experimental results. Two different conditions of flight has been considered: hover and vertical descent with various velocities along axis of rotor. The results has been analyzed to determinate Vortex Ring State conditions and confirmed, that Actuator Disc model can be used to qualitative analisys of VRS phenomena. It is assumed, that after a proper calibration this model can be used in further flight safety methods of VRS elimination research.

In the first step, a tentative velocity field is determined by simplified equations for momentum conservation. In the second step the Neumann problem for the Poisson equations is solved to obtain the computational pressure, and the velocity components are corrected. A standard method of lines approach and the two grids method are applied in this contribution. The two-dimensional unsteady motion of viscous incompressible fluid around an aerofoil at a large angle of attack has been computed. A modified velocity correction method splitting the velocity field has been designed to solve this problem. First, a tentative velocity field is determined from the equations of momentum conservation for explicit gradients of computational pressure. Then, the Neumann problem for the Poisson equation is solved to estimate the computational pressure, and velocity components are corrected. Test calculations have been made for the case of flow around the NACA 0012 aerofoil with an incidence of 34 degrees. The domain outside the aerofoil was transformed into a canonical one using conformal mapping. Computations were made on 100×100 and 100×200 grids for Reynolds numbers of Re=400, 600 and 1000. Comparison with numerical and experimental data reported in the literature has shown that the method is suitable for simulating 2D external viscous flows.

The paper shows the results of a comparison of simplified models describing a two-dimensional water flow in the example of a water flow through a straight channel sector with a cavern. The following models were tested: the two-dimensional potential flow model, the Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes model. In order to solve the first two, the boundary element method was employed, whereas to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, the open-source code library OpenFOAM was applied. The results of numerical solutions were compared with the results of measurements carried out on a test stand in a hydraulic laboratory. The measurements were taken with an ADV probe (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter). Finally, differences between the results obtained from the mathematical models and the results of laboratory measurements were analysed.

The work considers the modelling of flow in a complete mixed-flow pump with volute, including tip leakage flows, using both quasi-steady and true transient models of rotor/stator interaction. The CFX-TASCflow CFD package from AEA Technology is applied to calculate flows for a wide range of flow rates from about 0.2 to 1.4 Q/sub 0pt/. Fairly detailed flow structures have been predicted based on the flow rates, especially impeller inlet recirculation and separation on the suction side of the blades for suboptimal rates of flow, as well as strong secondary flows and separation in the volute for off-design conditions. The rotor/stator interaction influence on flow phenomena both in the impeller and volute have been investigated with very interesting results, providing good insight into the dynamics of flow close to the volute tongue. Based on the computational results, pump performance curves (Q-H, Q- eta /sub h/ and Q-P, eta /sub h/ being the hydraulic efficiency) have been obtained. The data from this numerical investigation have been used to improve the inlet part of the impeller blades, especially close to the tip. The geometry modifications have resulted in reduced cavitation in the impeller as well as noise at suboptimal rates of flow.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has progressed rapidly in the past fifty years and is now used in many industrial fields, such as air, space, and marine engineering. CFD has an irreplaceable role in marine design and scientific research, and its applications within this field continue to grow with the development of computers. CFD is used to quickly and inexpensively simulate fluid behaviour using the Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations to calculate hydrodynamic coefficients, which are needed in manoeuvrability studies of underwater vehicles (UWV). Here, these computations are performed for six geometrical shapes that represent typical autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) currently in use. Resistance test simulations at up to 20o drift angles were conducted for AUVs with different length-to-diameter ratios. The results were compared with the experimental data and current quasi-experimental relationships, which suggested that the CFD predictions were adequately precise and accurate. These predictions indicated that there was a non-linear relationship between forces and moments and the lateral speed. Moreover, both linear and non-linear hydrodynamic coefficients were calculated.

The paper presents the results of the computer simulations of solidification with consideration of the liquid phase movement. Simulations were conducted in a real, complex cast. There is a multi-stage resolution to the problem of convection in solidification simulations. The most important resolution concerns the development of the numerical model with the momentum and continuity equations, as well as conditions which are determined by the convection. Simulations were carried out with the use of our authorial software based on stabilized finite elements method (Petroy-Galerkin). In order to solve Navier-Stokes equation (with the convection element), Boussinesq’s approximation were used. Finite Elements Method (FEM) was responsible for the solidification. FEM is close to the heat conduction equation solution (with the internal heat source responsible for the heat released during phase transformation). Convection causes movement in the liquid phase in the solidifying cast and can significantly influence the process of heat transfer from the cast. It may change the distribution of the defects. Results of this article make it possible to assess the conditions in which the influence of the convection on solidification is significant.

This paper presents the basic principles of construction of numerical models for 3D viscous turbulent flows through multi stage turbomachines. The great attention is given to such properties of the methods as accuracy, linear and non-linear stability, robustness and computational efficiency. It is shown that these properties can be guaranteed if the implicit Godunov’s type ENO scheme is used. A 3D code FLOWER has been developed within this concept. Using the code the numerical results are obtained for flows through high loaded compressor cascades, a turbine stage, a low-pressure multi stage turbine and a centrifugal compressor stage. The results of optimisation of a low-pressure turbine last stage are presented.

In this paper a new shape optimization algorithm is presented. As a model application we consider state problems related to fluid mechanics, namely the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluids. The general approach to the problem is described. Next, transformations to classical optimal control problems are presented. Then, the dynamic programming approach is used and sufficient conditions for the shape optimization problem are given. A new numerical method to find the approximate value function is developed.

A 3D nonhydrostatic, Navier-Stokes solver has been employed to simulate gravity wave induced turbulence at mesopause altitudes. This paper extends our earlier 2D study reported in the literature to three spatial dimensions while maintaining fine resolution required to capture essential physics of the wave breaking. The calculations were performed on the 512 processor Cray T3E machine at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in Berkeley. The physical results of this study clearly demonstrate advantages of highly parallel technologies. We briefly outline the physical outcome of the study, as well as compare the relative model performance across several machines using both MPI and Shmem communication software.

An optimal control problem with quadratic cost functional for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations with no-slip boundary condition is considered. For a sufficiently small Reynolds number, even global Lipschitz stability of the unique optimal control is shown.

The paper describes the computer system PANSHIP for analysis of flow around the ship hull moving with constant velocity in calm water, including the effects of free surface and propeller operation. This system calculates the potential flow using the discrete distribution of Rankine sources on the hull. Viscous flow is computed using the integral method in the bow section and Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equation (RANS) in the stern section of the ship hull. Results of this analysis may be directly used in ship hull design and they may also serve as input for calculation of the unsteady flow phenomena accompanying propeller operation in the non-uniform velocity field generated by the hull. PANSHIP has been verified experimentally and it forms a useful tool available for ship designers and for marine hydrodynamicists.

Opis:
The free convection heat transfer from an isothermal vertical plate in open space is investigated theoretically. In contrast to conventional approaches we use neither boundary layer nor self-similarity concepts. We base on expansion of the fields of velocity and temperature in a Taylor Series in x coordinate with coefficients being functions of the vertical coordinate (y). In the minimal version of the theory we restrict ourselves by cubic approximation for both functions. The Navier-Stokes and Fourier-Kirchhoff equations that describe the phenomenon give links between coefficient functions of y that after exclusion leads to the ordinary differential equation of forth order (of the Mittag-Leffleur type). Such construction implies four boundary conditions for a solution of this equation while the links between the coefficients need two extra conditions. All the conditions are chosen on the basis of the experience usual for free convection. The choice allows us to express all the theory parameters as functions of the Rayleigh number and the temperature difference. To support the conformity of the theory we derive the Nusselt-Rayleigh numbers relation that has the traditional form. The solution in the form of velocity and temperature profiles is evaluated and illustrated for air by examples of plots of data.

Weakly permeable micro-tubes are employed in many applications involving heat and/or mass transfer. During these processes, either solute concentration builds up (mass transfer) or steep change in temperature (heat transfer) takes place near the permeable wall causing a change in the viscosity of the fluid. Results of the present work suggest that such change in viscosity leads to a considerable alteration in the flow behavior, and the commonly assumed parabolic velocity profile no longer exists. To solve the problem numerically, the equation of motion was simplified to represent permeation of incompressible, Newtonian fluid with changing viscosity through a micro-tube. Even after considerable simplification, the accuracy of the results was the same as that obtained by previously reported results for some specific cases using rigorous formulation. The algorithm developed in the present work is found to be numerically robust and simple so that it can be easily integrated with other simulations.

In the presented work Egorov’s approach (adding a source term to the ω-equation in the k-ω model, which mimics the damping of turbulence close to a solid wall) was implemented in on the subclass of shear stress transport models. Hence, turbulence damping is available for all shear stress transport type models, including hybrid models that are based on the ω-equation. It is shown that turbulence damping improves the prediction of the axial velocity profile not only for Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulation but also for detached eddy simulation and delayed detached eddy simulation models. Furthermore, it leads to a more realistic estimation of the pressure drop and, hence, to a more correct prediction of the liquid level. In this paper, simulation results for four different turbulence models are presented and validated by comparison with experimental data. Furthermore, the influence of the magnitude of the damping factor on the pressure drop in the channel is investigated for a variety of different gas-to-liquid flow rate ratios. These investigations show that higher gas-to-liquid flow rate ratios require higher damping factors to correctly predict the pressure drop. In the end, advice is formulated on how an appropriate damping factor can be determined for a specific test case.

Opis:
The main purpose of present paper aims at the establishment of a numerical model for solving the nonlinear water wave problems. The model is based on the Navier-Stokes equations with the consideration of a free-surface through the streamfunction-vorticity formulation. The main advantage of the streamfunction-vorticity formulation is that pressure field can be eliminated from the Navier-Stokes equations. To demonstrate the model feasibility, the present studies are first concentrated on problems including the collision of two solitary waves with different amplitudes, and the overtaking collision of two solitary waves. Then, the model is also applied to a solitary wave passes over the submerged obstacle in a viscous fluid. Finally, the application of present study is also to simulate the generation of solitary waves by underwater moving object. All examples give very promising results, those applications reveal that present formulation is a very powerful approach to simulate the fully nonlinear water wave problems.

The local-in-time existence of solutions of the free boundary problem for an incompressible viscous self-gravitating fluid motion is proved. We show the existence of solutions with lowest possible regularity for this problem such that $u\in W^{2,1}_r(\widetilde{{\mitΩ}}^T)$ with r>3. The existence is proved by the method of successive approximations where the solvability of the Cauchy-Neumann problem for the Stokes system is applied. We have to underline that in the $L_p$-approach the Lagrangian coordinates must be used. We are looking for solutions with lowest possible regularity because this simplifies the proof and decreases the number of compatibility conditions.

Physical flow modes are of particular interest for Reduced Order Flow Control-Oriented Models. Computation of physical modes as the eigensolution of linearized Navier-Stokes equations is a cumbersome and difficult task, especially for large, 3D problems. Instead we propose the solution of Navier-Stokes equation in the frequency domain and investigation of the system response to local or global perturbation. The flow variables are perturbed around steady basic state and the system response is used to construct mode basis suitable for ROMs.

Opis:
Asymptotic stability of finite energy solutions to a fluid-structure interaction with a static interface in a bounded domain Ω ∈ Rn, n = 2 is considered. It is shown that the undamped model subject to ”partial flatness” geometric condition on the in- terface produces solutions whose energy converges strongly to zero; while with a stress type feedback control applied on the interface of the structure, the model produces solutions whose energy is exponentially stable. An addition of a static damping on the interface produces solutions whose full norm in the phase space is exponentially stable. Without a static damping an interesting phenomenon occurs that steady state solutions (equilibria) might generate genuinely growing in time solutions. This is purely nonlinear phenomenon captured by newly developed techniques amenable to handle instability of steady state solutions arising from nonlinearity.

The article presents the study of the flow of non-Newtonian liquid on the hydrodynamic initial section in doubly connected region. A method which allows solving this problem is to use the principle of conservation of momentum for a moving fluid. The study used the equation Navier- Stokesa for in viscid fluid moving in a two dimensional space. For the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations it is necessary to know the function of cross linking for the velocity distribution in hydrodynamic initial section in doubly connected region. This function was obtained by integrating the Navier-Stokes equations and after substitution in the equation for the distribution of local velocities allows calculating the local velocity in the liquid flow on the hydrodynamic initial section in doubly connected region. In addition to the analysis of the function of cross linking was discussed.

We describe an approach for efficient solution of large-scale convective heat transfer problems that are formulated as coupled unsteady heat conduction and incompressible fluid-flow equations. The original problem is discretized over time using classical implicit methods, while stabilized finite elements are used for space discretization. The algorithm employed for the discretization of the fluid-flow problem uses Picard’s iterations to solve the arising nonlinear equations. Both problems (the heat transfer and Navier–Stokes equations) give rise to large sparse systems of linear equations. The systems are solved by using an iterative GMRES solver with suitable preconditioning. For the incompressible flow equations, we employ a special preconditioner that is based on an algebraic multigrid (AMG) technique. This paper presents algorithmic and implementation details of the solution procedure, which is suitably tuned – especially for ill-conditioned systems that arise from discretizations of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We describe a parallel implementation of the solver using MPI and elements from the PETSC library. The scalability of the solver is favorably compared with other methods, such as direct solvers and the standard GMRES method with ILU preconditioning.

The present study is based on the nonlinear bending analysis of an FGM plate with Von-Karman strain based on the non-linear classical plate theory (NLCPT) with in-plane displacement and moderate rotation. Non-linear bending analysis based on stresses and transverse deflections is then carried out for the plate for the complex solution obtained using an analytical method viz. Navier’s method. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are obtained using the Principle of Minimum Potential Energy (PMPE) method and material property is graded in thickness direction according to simple power-law distribution in terms of volume fractions of the constituents. The effect of the span-to-thickness ratio and FGM exponent on the maximum central deflection and stresses are studied. The results show that the response is transitional with respect to ceramic and metal and the complex solution predicts the real behavior of stresses and deflections in the functionally graded plate. The functionally graded plate is found to be more effective for moderately thick and thick plates, which is inferred by a complex nature of the solution. For FGM plates, the transverse deflection is in-between to that of metal and ceramic rich plates. The complex nature of the solution also gives information about the stress distribution in the thickness direction.

Opis:
Since ship-bank interaction affects the manoeuvrability of a ship navigating close to a bank, the determination of hydrodynamic derivatives is of great importance to assess the ship manoeuvrability. To obtain the hydrodynamic derivatives of the KVLCC2 model ship with different water depths and ship-bank distances, the simulation of PMM tests are carried out using an unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) based solver. Hybrid dynamic mesh technique is proposed to realize the simulation of pure yaw tests in confined water. Studies on the grid convergence and time-step-size convergence are firstly performed. Hydrodynamic derivatives for the ship in different water depths and ship-bank distances are compared. The course stability is investigated based on time-domain simulations and eigenvalue analysis, and the results show that the ship-bank interaction and shallow water effect have a remarkable influence on the course stability.

Opis:
The current work deals with two-phase flow and heat transfer induced by a mixture of fluid and dust particles revolving with a constant angular velocity above a slippage planar wall. Interaction of the solids with the fluid through an interaction force while rotating above the surface is formulated through a similarity system of equations akin to the Bödewadt flow in the absence of suspended particles. Although the velocity fields of fluid and solid are strictly coupled, the heat fields are decoupled from the velocity fields, but they are still in contact with each other due to the coupling of fluid and particle temperatures. The dusty fluid flow character is simulated numerically to capture the fluid and dust phase behaviors. The momentum and thermal layers are resolved in the presence of wall slip mechanism. Illustrative and quantitative results are eventually presented reflecting the physical features of particles and fluid at any stage of interaction during the rotary motion. It is revealed that the wall slip mechanism can be effective enough to alter the usual Bödewadt flow phenomenon.

Opis:
The paper presents the background of an alternative formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation using a variable called the magnetization. Several variants of governing equations, based on different choices of a particular gauge transform, are discussed. The remaining part of the paper is devoted to the formulation of a Lagrangian approach to 2D and 3D viscous flows. First, the carrier of the magnetization (the magneton) is defined and the corresponding induction law is derived. The instantaneous velocity field is constructed as a superposition of contributions from a large set of magnetons and a uniform stream. An essential feature of the method is a one-time-step operator splitting, consisting in the consecutive solution of three sub-problems: generation of the magnetization on solid boudaries, advection-diffusion of the magnetization and sretching.
Cząstki magnetyzacji (zwane magnetonami) poruszają się w indukowanym polu prędkości, wykonują ruch losowy odpowiadający dyfuzji i podlegają przekształceniu w sposób opisany członem źródłowym (tzw. stretching). Opis:
In this paper, an incompressible, two-dimensional (2D), time-dependent, Newtonian, laminar, and internal channel fluid flow over a skewed equilateral cavity is simulated using the finite difference method (FDM) and alternating direction implicit (ADI) technique. Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically in stream function-vorticity formulation. The goal of tackling this problem depends on its academic significance by studying the difference between lid-driven and shear-driven cavity flows in terms of the formation of Moffatt eddies at the sharp corner, also to obtain the length and intensity ratios of these counter-rotating vortices. The value of velocity components along the centerlines of the skewed cavity was revealed at low and intermediate Reynolds numbers (Re), typically (Re = 200 and 2000) at two different skew angles of mainly 30° and 45°. Likewise, the blocked-off regions’ method is used to deal with the geometry of the skewed cavity especially the sharp corners. Furthermore, as Re increases, the main vortex approaches the skewed cavity center and the counter-rotating vortices get bigger in size and intensity, and their number increases.

Opis:
This article presents a numerical study of the fuel and turbulence distributions in a pre-chamber at spark-time. The study has been conducted in the framework of the H2020 Gas-On project, dealing with the development of a lean-burn concept for an automotive-sized gas engine equipped with a scavenged pre-chamber. The test case considered studies a 7-hole pre-chamber with circumferentially-tilted orifices mounted on the cylinder head of a rapid compression-expansion machine (RCEM), consistent with the experimental test rig installed at ETH Zurich. An accurate description of turbulence and fuel distributions are key quantities determining the early flame development within the pre-chamber. Both quantities have an influence on the overall combustion characteristics and therefore on the engine performance. For this purpose, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is employed to complement experimental investigations in terms of data completeness. The performance of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-based turbulence model is compared with large-eddy simulation (LES) through ensemble averaging of multiple LES realizations, in which the fuel injection rate evolution into the pre-chamber has been perturbed. Overall, RANS results show that the distributions of the turbulent kinetic energy and fuel concentration at spark-time agree well with the LES ensemble-averaged counterparts. This constitutes a prerequisite in view of the combustion phase and the accuracy reported provides further confidence in this regard.

Reducing friction with specialised hull coatings or air lubrication technologies has a potential reducing energy consumption and emissions in shipping. The EU project AIRCOAT combines both by developing a passive air lubrication technology inspired by nature that is implemented on a self-adhesive foil system. Besides validating the friction reduction it is of high interest to understand the underlying mechanism that causes the reduction. Therefore, a flow channel was designed, that creates a stationary turbulent flow within a square duct allowing for non-invasive measurements by laser doppler velocimetry. The high spatial resolution of the laser device makes recording velocity profiles within the boundary layer down to the viscous sublayer possible. Determination of the wall shear stress τ enables direct comparison of different friction reduction experiments. In this paper we validate the methodology by determining the velocity profile of the flat channel wall (without coatings). We further use the results to validate a CFD model in created in OpenFOAM. We find that velocities along the longitudinal axis are generally in good agreement between numerical and experimental investigations.

The paper is intended to describe a method for the calculation of 3D viscous compressible (subsonic or supersonic) flow in axial turbomachines described in the form of thin-layer Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The method draws on Godunov-type upwind differencing and ENO reconstruction suggested by Harten (1987), so as to assure monotonicity preservation and high accuracy of computational results. The computational efficiency is achieved thanks to the implementation of a simplified H-type multi-grid approach and delta -form implicit step. Turbulent effects are simulated with the help of a modified algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax (1978). This method was at the foundation of a computer code-a complex software package to calculate 3D flow in multi-stage turbomachines that allows us to obtain local characteristics, like temperature, pressure, density or velocity distributions, as well as global characteristics, such as flow rates, stage reaction, flow efficiency for the considered turbine/compressor stage. The paper also gives selected results of computation of a number of turbomachinery cascades, showing that these results agree reasonably well with the available experimental data.

A novel solution of the free convection boundary problem is represent ed in analytical form for velocity and temperature for an isothermal vertical plate, as an example. These fields are built as a Taylor Series in the x coordinate with coefficients as functions of the vertical coordinate (y). We restrict ourselves by cubic approximation for both functions. The basic Navier-Stokes and Fourier-Kirchhoff equations and boundary conditions give links between coefficients and connected with free convection heat transfer phenomen on which define the analytical form of the solution as a function of the Grashof number only. Purpose Mathematical modelling of the process of deformation of pipeline, transporting gas-liquid mixtures with aggressive components and a comparative analysis of the value of the specified velocity depending on the dynamic viscosity of the multicomponent gas mixture is conducted. Design/methodology/approach A mathematical model of the process of leakage of the transported product due to the loss of tightness of the pipe based on the system of Navier-Stokes equations with boundary conditions with considering the geometry of the leakage zones and the value of the leakage rate is implemented. Findings Models of the process of deformation of the pipeline due to displacements of a certain set of surface points by specifying different types of functions, describing the geometry of deformed sections are constructed. The method of calculating the tensely deformed state based on the data on the movement of surface points by comparing different ways of setting functions, taking into account the actual configuration of sections and axes is improved. The change of flow characteristics in the pipeline when changing the structure of the mix, transported by studying of influence of change of dynamic viscosity is investigated; The method of calculating the rate of leakage of the mixture in case of loss of tightness due to the occurrence of critical stresses in the pipe material is improved. Research limitations/implications Building a model of the deformation process, information about the nature, duration of forces and loads affecting the pipeline is not used. The law of the pipeline movement was constructed having taken into account the deformation of the sections in three directions. The necessity to take wind loads into account, estimating the real tensely deformed state was displayed. Practical implications Using the method of calculating the tensely deformed state based on the data on the movement of surface points by comparing different ways of setting functions, taking into account the actual configuration of sections and axes. Originality/value According to the computational algorithms created on the basis of the specified models, the calculations of the tense state of the pipelines and the flow rate of the mixture depending on its composition were performed. An analysis of the results of calculations - tense intensity and flow rate depending on the dynamic viscosity of the mixture is performed. The influence on the flow parameters - the flow rate of the mixture and the force of hydraulic resistance - changes in the dynamic viscosity of the mixture is analyzed.

The two-variable refined plate theory is used in this paper for the analysis of thick plates resting on elastic foundation. This theory contains only two unknown parameters and predicts parabolic variation of transverse shear stresses. It satisfies the zero traction on the plate surfaces without using shear correction factor. Using the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations for simply supported rectangular plates resting on Winkler elastic foundation are obtained. The Navier method is adopted for solution of obtained coupled governing equations, and several benchmark problems under various loading conditions are solved by present theory. The comparison of obtained results with other common theories shows the excellent efficiency of this theory in modeling thick plates resting on elastic foundation. Also, the effect of foundation modulus, plate thickness and type of loading are studied and the results show that the deflections are decreased by increasing the foundation modulus and plate thickness.

Porównanie otrzymanych rezultatów z uzyskanymi w innych znanych teoriach wykazuje doskonałą efektywność stosowanej teorii w modelowaniu grubych płyt spoczywających na podłożu sprężystym. Przestudiowano także wpływ modułu sprężystości podłoża, grubości płyty i typu obciążenia. Wyniki pokazują, że ugięcia płyty maleją przy wzroście modułu sprężystości podłoża i grubości płyty.

Opis:
The second part the paper focuses on implementation issues of the spectral element technique and presents sample results of numerical simulations. Particular algorithms like preconditioning of the presser solver, fast diagonalization method and the projection method for solving sequences of large linear systems are described in some details. The computational results, obtained for both test domains and geometries of medical origin, are presented. The comparison with the results of computations with the FIDAP package is provided. The difficulties and limitations of the spectral method and current implementation are discussed. Attempts of the parallelization of the spectral code and the obtained efficiency are briefly described.

Opis:
We demonstrate in this study that a rotating magnetic field (RMF) and spinning magnetic particles using this kind of magnetic field give rise to a motion mechanism capable of triggering mixing effect in liquids. In this experimental work two mixing mechanisms were used, magnetohydrodynamics due to the Lorentz force and mixing due to magnetic particles under the action of RMF, acted upon by the Kelvin force. To evidence these mechanisms, we report mixing time measured during the neutralization process (weak acid-strong base) under the action of RMF with and without magnetic particles. The efficiency of the mixing process was enhanced by a maximum of 6.5% and 12.8% owing to the application of RMF and the synergistic effect of magnetic field and magnetic particles, respectively
