This paper analyses the diatribe On sacrifices (De sacrificiis), written by famous Greek satirist of Roman imperial period, Lucian of Samosata (ca.120 - ca.190 A.C.), called Blasphemer or Atheist by Suda Lexicon, and traces its philosophical and literary sources. Lucian criticizes all forms of traditional Greek religion, in particular animal sacrifices (thysiai). He campaigns against traditional piety, that is, superstition, mentioning two pre-Socratic philosophers: Heraclitus of Ephesus and Democritus of Abdera. The satirical representation of Greek gods in On sacrifices bases on the Iliad of Homer, the desciption of the Eastern cults is anachronic (based on Herodotus), without any references to contemporary religious phenomena. The Lucian’s detailed description of religious animal slaughter (chapters 12-13), though it shows a great sensitivity and emotional involvement, is unclear, because there is no sign to recognize which he means: an usual Greek animal sacrifices or the holocausts. This emotional description is influenced by Homer’s poems and by two important moralizing writings: On piety (De pietate) by Theophrastus (fragments preserved in Porphyrius’ De ahstinentia, II) and On the eating the meat (De esu carnium, 1—II) by Plutarchus of Chaeronea.

The work The Passing of Peregrinus by Lucian of Samosata presents a picture of a pseudo-philosopher , who under the disguise of Cynic asceticism and courageous death, hid such an extraordinary desire for fame and publicity that it took on a pathological size. This morbid craving for popularity that he acquired by any possible means finally brought Peregrinus to suicidal death, although, in fact, he did not really want it. What Lucian did not approve of his conduct was falseness, cheap theatrical claptrap, using human simplicity and warm-heartedness. Lucian damasks in a brutal way the unbound craving for publicity from which all actins of Peregrinus stemmed. By removing a tragic mask from his face Lucian pinpoints his ridiculousness and ugliness. It was the pursuit of popularity that brought Peregrinus to destruction. His self-immolation, however, was not viewed upon by Lucian as an act of heroism, but merely as a grotesque and miserable ending of an equally grotesque and deplorable life.

In this paper, I examine the debate between advocates of male and female love in two works dedicated to this subject: Plutarch’s Amatorius (Dialogue on Love) and Lucian’s Amores (Affairs of the Heart). Plutarch, drawing on Platonic tradition, accepts and praises eros paidikos, but he condemns homosexual intercourse as an act of hybris. On the other hand, Plutarch rejects traditional Greek prejudices against women and glorifies marriage as the highest form of human relationship: he argues that conjugal love contains both the lifelong friendship and sexual relations which are a source of mutual kindness, respect and affection. In Lucian’s work the defender of pederasty, portraying it as a spiritual relationship and a mark of advanced cultural evolution, wins the debate; but in the last part of dialogue moral demands of sexual restraint in pederasty are mocked, and sexual pleasure is called “a mediator of friendship”.

Lukian, jeden z najwybitniejszych greckich stylistów, satyryk i mówca, pochodził z Samosat nad Eufratem – był więc, według własnego określenia, „Syryjczykiem i barbarzyńcą”. Ta podwójna perspektywa – Greka z wykształcenia, „barbarzyńcy” z pochodzenia – pozwoliła mu w wielu utworach nie tylko wykorzystywać sięgający czasów wojen perskich motyw dychotomii Hellenów i barbarzyńców, ale także podważać zakorzenione stereotypy, bawiąc się nimi i kierując ostrze satyry w obu kierunkach. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, na wybranych przykładach, sposobu, w jaki Lukian zarówno przełamuje, jak i wykorzystuje związane z pochodzeniem stereotypy, ukazując kontrast pomiędzy grecką paideią a kulturą pojawiąjących się w jego dialogach „barbarzyńców”, a także przedstawiając w zupełnie odmiennym świetle dwie kategorie „barbarzyńców”: Scytów i Syryjczyków.
Lucian, one of the greatest Greek stylists, satirist and rhetorician, was born in the town of Samosata on the banks of the Euphrates – therefore he was, by his own definition, “a Syrian and a barbarian”. This double perspective allowed him not only to exploit the theme of the dichotomy between the Greeks and the barbarians, but also to challenge some common stereotypes and to make them the subject of his satire. The aim of the article is to demonstrate, on selected examples, how Lucian both challenges and uses stereotypical depictions of Greeks and barbarians, and shows not only the contrast between the Greek paideia and the barbarian culture, but also the distinction between traditional accounts of two categories of "barbarians": Scythians and Syrians.

Focusing on Alexander the False Prophet and The Lover of Lies, two texts from the Greek poet-philosopher Lucian of Samosata (circa 120-200) of the Classical Roman era, this paper considers (a) charisma, magic, and spirituality as aspects of an interconnected, collectively achieved, developmental process associated with the emergence of a religious cult. Somewhat relatedly, this paper also acknowledges (b) people’s broader, longstanding fascinations with matters that seem incredulous.  Depicting a more sustained realm of prophetic activity and an account of people’s intrigues with the supernatural, Lucian’s texts offer some especially valuable transhistorical and transcultural reference points for the broader sociological study of human knowing and acting. The paper concludes with a consideration of the implications of these matters for the study of people’s involvements in religion and spirituality as humanly-engaged realms of endeavor and interchange.

Its purpose is to indicate the presence of fantastic causes in the work today and to trace the presence of the motifs used by Lucian in later fantastic writings. The dividing line between fantasy literature and science fiction is also permanently drawn, which is helpful in examining the work, as well as in an attempt to assign it to one of the revealed trends in fantasy literature.

The article is devoted to little known and rarely appreciated late-Baroque Dominican Jan Alan Bardziński who was a keen preacher and translator of bothsecular and religious texts. Bardziński’s literary activity is strongly connected to his duties performed in the order as one of the main values he searches for in his texts is of a didactic nature. Simultaneously, he may certainly be perceived as an adapter of some ancient works which puts him among other 17th and 18th-century followers of the culture of Classicism. In the article we briefly discuss his works and provide the readers with their distinctive features. Moreover, we shall take into consideration Bardziński’s notes which allow us to define his goals and priorities and underline the moral values included in his works.

Lucian of Samosata (circa 120-200) may be primarily envisioned as a poet-philosopher from the classical Roman era. However, the material he develops on religion not only anticipates important aspects of contemporary pragmatist/constructionist approaches to the sociology of religion but also provides some particularly compelling insights into religion as a humanly engaged realm of reality. Following an introduction to a pragmatist approach to the study of religion, this paper presents a synoptic overview of several of Lucian’s texts on religion. In addition to the significance of Lucian’s materials for comprehending an era of Roman and Greek civilization, as well as their more general sources of intellectual and aesthetic stimulation, these texts also provide an array of valuable transhistorical reference points and alert scholars in the field of religion to some ways in which the study of religion could be more authentically approached within the social sciences. The paper concludes with a consideration of the affinities of Lucian’s depictions of religion with pragmatist, interactionist, and associated approaches as this pertains to the study of religion as a realm of human involvement.

The essay makes a brief survey of his works, describing their content and underlining some important notes given by the translator himself regarding his goals and prorities.
