    Opis:
    Comet assay under neutral conditions allows the detection of DNA double-strand breaks, considered to be the biologically relevant radiation-induced lesion. In this report we describe modifications of the neutral comet method, which simplify and facilitate its use for estimation of DNA double strand breaks in human lymphocytes irradiated with doses of 60Co gamma-rays (from 10 to 100 Gy). The analysis carried out according to this protocol takes less time than those published so far. Also, the use of lysis at 50°C is avoided; this is important in view of the presence of heat-labile sites in the DNA of irradiated cells, recently reported by Rydberg [12]. The comets have well defined, sharp limits, are suitable for computer image analysis and chromatin of the control cells remains condensed.

    Opis:
    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of signalling inhibition on survival and double-strand break (DSB) rejoining in cells differing in sensitivity to inhibitors, X-rays and bleomycin. Human glioma M059 cells, K (relatively radioresistant) and J (radiosensitive, defective in DSB rejoining for lack of DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit, DNA-PKcs) were pretreated with signalling inhibitors: tyrphostin AG 1478, specific for epidermalgrowth- factor-receptor (EGFR) kinase or PD 98059, specific for kinase MEK 1/2 (mitogen-activated, extracellular signal-activated kinases 1 and 2). Subsequently, the cells were X-irradiated or treated with bleomycin. Cell survival was determined by clonogenicity test. DSB rejoining was monitored with the use of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). We found that in X-irradiated M059 K cells EGFR kinase activity was necessary for efficient DSB rejoining and the kinase inhibitor, tyrphostin AG 1478, acted as radiosensitizer in the dose range that reduced cell survival to 0.7-0.8. Inhibition of EGFR kinase, however, did not decrease survival or affect DSB rejoining in DNA-PKcs-deficient M059 J cells. These results indicated that the decrease in cell survival was due to a disturbed DSB rejoining by the DNA-PK dependent system. In contrast, inhibition of MEK 1/2 kinase on EGFR downstream signalling pathway by PD 98059 did not affect DSB rejoining in either cell line and exerted a radioprotective effect.

    We compared the effects of bleomycin (BLM) and ionizing radiation on two sublines of murine lymphoma L5178Y (LY): LY-R, radiation resistant and LY-S, radiation sensitive. This radiosensitivity difference is related to the ability to rejoin DNA double strand breaks. LY-S cells were about two times more sensitive to BLM than LY-R, similarly as in the case of sensitivity to X rays. Since there was no difference in the P-glycoprotein-related drug transport system between the sublines, it could be expected that the enhanced sensitivity of LY-S cells to BLM was caused by the DNA repair defect. Growth disturbances in BLM treated cell populations were proportional to the lethal effect and their duration was observed until elimination of dead cells (3-6 days after 50 ěM BLM, 1 h at 37oC). There was no slow growth phase accompanied by normal viability, as previously described for X-irradiated LY-S cells. Initial DNA damage, estimated with the single cell gel electrophoresis method was linearly related to BLM dose in LY-S cells; in LY-R cells - in the low dose range (up to 10 ěM) - there was more damage than in LY-S cells, however, at higher doses the dose - effect curves became identical. The doseeffect relationship for ă rays was linear and identical in both cell sublines. DNA damage distribution in BLM treated cells was much less uniform as compared to that in irradiated cells and indicated the presence of cells with severely damaged DNA, a feature typical for BLM action in vitro.

    Opis:
    Adaptive response (AR), an enhanced resistance to a high dose of ionising radiation acquired after pretreatment with a very low dose, was estimated in normal human lymphocytes. The question posed was whether the extent of radioadaptation, assessed by micronucleus test, would be related to the rate of DNA double-strand break (DSB) rejoining. Phytohemagglutinin-stimulated G1-lymphocytes from 5 healthy male volunteers were pre-treated (or not) with an adaptive (5 cGy) dose of X-rays, followed by a higher (5 or 10 Gy) challenge dose after 20-22 h. DSB rejoining after the challenge dose was monitored with the use of two methods: neutral comet assay, modified to reduce the contribution of single-strand breaks (SSBs) and thermolabile sites, and pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), specific for DSBs. At the level of micronuclei, an AR was observed in lymphocytes of 3 of 5 donors. Up to 60 min, comet assay showed no statistically significant differences in DNA break rejoining between adapted and non-adapted lymphocytes, independently of AR appearance. PFGE gave similar results, although in three donors it revealed secondary increases in DSBs levels at 30 min and/or 60 min post-irradiation in the adapted vs. the non-adapted samples. Failure to demonstrate changes in DSBs rejoining rate in the adapted lymphocytes could be due to diversity of AR intensity/timing at the level of DNA repair in not fully homogenous cell populations. Also, “rare” DNA cuts characteristic of early apoptosis/necrosis could overlap the process of DNA break rejoining.

    Subject to analysis in this article are the poetic and the metapoetic statements made by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Even though the latter category is now and then analysed in lingustic research – as part of the analyses of Sienkiewicz’s legacy as a columnist and a reviewer – the former category remains terra incognita for language researchers. The first part of the article analyses the key concepts of Sienkiewicz’s metapoetic statements (e.g. talent [gift, talent] or prostota [simplicity]) as well as the stylistic qualities of these statements (e.g. poetic nature, emotionality). The second part of the article features a linguistic analysis of the idiostylistic qualities of Sienkiewicz’s poetic works: grammar of rhymes, selection of stylistic means (e.g. parallels and epithets) as well as his choice of the lexical stock.

    Opis:
    The article’s goal is to present the consequences of Polish membership in the European Union (EU) for the functioning of the Polish Sejm and Senate at the national and international level. Polish accession to the European Union resulted in changes to the scope of competences of certain organs of the Republic of Poland. This was related to the transfer of specific state competences to an international organization and it applied, in particular, to the Polish Parliament (the Sejm and Senate) which has lost its primary role as legislator of laws applicable in Poland. In order to avoid the marginalization of national parliaments in the EU decision-making process, appropriate legal measures have been introduced at the national and international level. Additionally, after the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, national parliaments have received new competences which allowed them to exist on the forum of the European Union. The article puts forward the thesis that the Polish Sejm and Senate have lost their position as main legislative bodies at the national level but, at the same time, they have acquired a new European function which can neither be qualified as traditionally understood legislative nor controlling functions.

    Będące przedmiotem analizy Godzinki moskalofilskie. 300 dni łaski carskiej za każdorazowe odmówienie tych godzinek z pokorą i skruszonym sercem T. Chełchowskiego to tekst odpowiadający poetyce polonijnych sporów politycznych przełomu XIX i XX wieku, a przy tym czerpiący z polskiej tradycji literackiej. Za sprawą nawiązania do modlitewnego wzorca – godzinek, i uwzględniając ich genezę, Godzinki moskalofilskie uznać można za trawestację (w ujęciu Nycza) lub okaz (w ujęciu Wojtak) wzorca modlitewnego. Nawiązanie to przejawia się w siedmioczęściowej budowie (jutrznia, pryma, tercja, seksta, nona, nieszpory i kompleta) z zaczęciem, hymnem, wersetami i responsoriami, modlitwą; konsekwentnie stosowany w wezwaniach i hymnach wzorzec metryczny; apostroficzne otwarcie hymnów; wersety i responsoria następujące po hymnie i/lub modlitwie; nawiązania stylistyczne i semantyczne (wezwania do cara i bohaterów hymnów na wzór apostrof do Boga i Maryi; parafrazy kolokacji biblijnych i modlitewnych). Odstępstwem od wzorca kanonicznego są: zredukowana forma ofiarowania (tylko antyfona), brak modlitwy, modyfikowane w każdej z godzin zaczęcie.
    Subject to analysis in this article is T. Chełchowski’s Godzinki moskalofilskie. 300 dni łaski carskiej za każdorazowe odmówienie tych godzinek z pokorą i skruszonym sercem [Moscophile Hours: 300 Days of Grace for Each Saying of the Hours with Humility and Contrite Heart]. The Hours is a text that fits the general poetics of the political disputes typical of the Polish émigré milieus at the turn of the 20th century. At the same time, the text retains a lot from the Polish literary tradition. Taking into account the fact that the text exploits a prayer as a textual genre (Canonical Hours), and acknowledging the roots of the genre, the Hours can be classified as a travesty (trawestacja in Nycz’s approach) or as an idiosyncratic token (okaz in Wojtak’s terms) of the prayer genre. The generic linkage is realized by constructing the text of the Hours in seven parts (Matins, Prime, Terce, Sext, Nones, Vespers and Compline) with its introduction, hymn, verses, responsories and prayers; by consecutive use of metre in invocations and hymns; by an apostrophic opening of the hymns; by positioning verses and responsories after hymns or prayers; as well as by stylistic and semantic references (invocations addressed to the Tsar and hymn protagonists, modelled on apostrophes to God and Mary; paraphrases of biblical and prayer collocations). Departures from the canonical text-type include: the reduced form of the final antiphon, lack of prayer and an introduction that is modified per each hour.

    This article is a language-stylistic analysis of an anonymous translation of the Latin polemical text entitled The Kind, or the Descendants of Martin Luther, the Fifth Evangelist and the Father, who Gave Life to Evangelists and their Christian Congregations, who Fight against the Church of God and against Each Other. The analysis has determined that the main organizing principle of the text is the use of parallelisms and oppositions of the kind “sons of Christianity” v. “sons of Satan”, true (faith) v. sectarian (denomination), unity v. diversity. The evaluative narrative and the way in which the particular fractions within the Lutheran church are depicted illustrate a case of a well-balanced polemical, whose main objective is to prove the inferiority of the Reformed denominations.

    W artykule przedstawiono porównanie metod wyznaczania granicy stabilności dla układów obrabiarka - uchwyt - przedmiot narzędzie, modelowanych jako układy wielomodalne o dwóch stopniach swobody. Omówiono metody obliczeniowe, opisano wyniki testowania oprogramowania opartego o różne algorytmy. Wykazano, że największą zaletą metody analitycznej jest szybkość działania algorytmu, natomiast wadą stopień złożoności zapisu dla większej liczby stopni swobody. Z kolei układy o większej liczbie stopni swobody łatwiej jest analizować metodą numeryczną, ze względu na uniwersalność zapisu macierzowego. Wadą tej metody jest dłuższy czas obliczeń, w porównaniu do metody analitycznej.
    The paper introduces a comparison of methods of stability analysis for the systems of "machine tool - holder -workpiece - tool" with two degrees of freedom. It discusses calculation methods and describes the findings from testing methods for software built on different types of algorithms. It proves that the biggest advantage of the analytical method is the speed of the algorithm while the disadvantage the degree of complexity for the system with a higher number of degrees of freedom. In turn, the higher number of degrees of freedom is easier to render in calculation by the application of the numerical method owing to the universality of the matrix transcription. The downside of the numerical method in comparison to the analytical one is its increased time inefficiency.

    The purpose of this article is to analyze and synthesize Kazimierz Twardowski’s ideas that belong to philosophy of education. The aim of education is “rational patriotism” – it should prepare “enlightened citizens” who not only love their country but also present some important features of character like discipline, hard work, sense of duty. Therefore upbringing becomes a central issue. Additionally, they should develop certain skills that serve prosperity of their nation like scientific thinking (propaedeutic of philosophy is vital subject at school) that are “levers of mental progress.” The aim was to be achieved on two entangled levels: by creation of a Polish national school and at an efficiently organized university, by well-prepared (didactics) and sage-like teachers (school and academic). Sources of his ideas can be found in his background; his encounter with Stoicism and Franz Brentano and his way of philosophizing. Clearness and precision of expression, profound analysis of concepts Twardowski applied in his social and pedagogical work as well as during theoretical considerations when distinguishing action and product of upbringing, and upbringing from education itself. His didactical success in creation of “an army of intellectuals” is a valuable proof of his ideas.

    Opis:
    Processes of destruction of products used in orthodontic treatment, e.g. fixed orthodontic appliances, microimplants or dental prostheses considerably limit its operational lifetime and comfort and safety of patients. The objective of the research was to evaluate and assess corrosion damage to silver-soldered stainless steel rapid palatal expansion Hyrax devices. Used in vivo for 2 or 6 months, respectively, RPE (rapid palatal expansion) devices were analyzed macroscopically and in a scanning electron microscope with an energy X-ray analyzer for signs of corrosion. The evaluated appliances showed discernible differences between the overall condition of the noble solders and the stainless steel elements. The Ag-rich solders were chiefly covered in corrosion pits, whereas stainless steel wires, molar bands and Hyrax screws presented corrosion-free surfaces. What is more, the EDS analysis showed differential element composition of the solders. According to the results, noble materials, such as Ag-rich solders, can corrode in a salivary environment when coupled with stainless steel. The selective leaching processes are observed.
    Procesy niszczenia produktów wykorzystywanych w leczeniu ortodontycznym, takich jak: stałych aparatów ortodontycznych, mikroimplantów oraz elementów protetyki stomatologicznej znacząco skracają trwałość eksploatacyjną wyrobów gotowych oraz obniżają komfort leczenia i poziom bezpieczeństwa pacjentów. Celem pracy jest ocena zniszczeń korozyjnych powstałych podczas eksploatacji wykonanych ze stali nierdzewnej stałych aparatów ortodontycznych typu Hyrax przeznaczonych do poszerzania szczęki na skutek tzw. szybkiej ekspansji podniebienia. Używane in vivo od 2 do 6 miesięcy aparaty RPE (rapid palatal expansion) przeanalizowano makroskopowo, za pomocą skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego oraz przy użyciu rentgenowskiego spektroskopu dyspersyjnego. Analiza uzyskanych wyników wyraźnie wskazuje na różnicę w ogólnym stanie pomiędzy elementami wykonanymi ze stali nierdzewnej i lutami na bazie srebra. Połączenia lutowane we wszystkich analizowanych aparatach uległy dostrzegalnemu makroskopowo roztwarzaniu korozyjnemu, natomiast części konstrukcyjne wykonane ze stali 316L, takie jak: śruby, druty oraz pierścienie trzonowe wolne były od korozji. Co więcej, wykonana analiza składu chemicznego połączeń lutowanych wykazała nierównomierne rozłożenie pierwiastków stopowych, wskazujące na występowanie korozji selektywnej. Wyniki zrealizowanych badań wskazują, iż w połączeniu ze stalą nierdzewną w środowisku jamy ustnej możliwe jest roztwarzanie korozyjne materiałów szlachetnych, jakimi są luty srebrowe. Obserwuje się ślady zachodzących procesów selektywnego roztwarzania korozyjnego o szczególnie wysokiej intensywności na granicy stal nierdzewna – lut na bazie srebra.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest omówieniu widocznych w poezji Januarego Poźniaka, związków z Wincentym Polem. Wiersze Poźniaka, lwowskiego prawnika i społecznika od wczesnej młodości marzącego o byciu poetą, są świadectwem wieloletniej przyjaźni z Polem i jego żoną, Kornelią. Poźniak pisze m.in. o wyjeździe Pola do Wilna czy wykorzystując symbolikę ludową, opisuje romans poety z Kornelią. Twórczość Poźniaka ujawnia także wspólną obu poetom troskę o losy narodu, a także wiarę w nieprzemijalność sławy Pola. Fascynacja Polem – poetą i wieszczem – przejawia się nie tylko poprzez stosowaną przez Poźniaka leksykę, ale również poprzez nawiązania do jego poetyki przy jednoczesnym deprecjonowaniu własnych dokonań literackich (motyw zapomnienia i „rdzewiejącej gęśli”).
    This article discusses noticeable links between January Poźniak and Wincenty Pol as revealed in the poetry of the former. Poźniak’s poetic oeuvre – a Lviv lawyer and social activist, who always dreamt of becoming a poet – is an evident testimony of his lifelong friendship with Pol and his wife Kornelia. Poźniak touches upon such issues like Pol’s departure to Vilnius or his romantic affair with Kornelia – embedded in a folk symbolic framework. Poźniak’s works also reveal that both authors shared their sentiment for the fate of the nation. They also unveil Poźniak’s strong belief in Pole’s everlasting fame. Poźniak’s fascination with Pol – a poet and a national prophet – presents itself through his choice of vocabulary and his references to Pol’s poetic conventions, accompanied with a tendency to depreciate Poźniak’s own literary achievements (cf. motives of oblivion and the “rusty gusle”).

    Polska opozycja demokratyczna tworzyła polemiczną wobec oficjalnej wizję historii najnowszej (odkłamywanie białych plam jak zbrodnia katyńska, represje sowieckie wobec Polaków i historia Armii Krajowej). Podejmowano również temat relacji polsko-żydowskich, odnosząc się do negatywnych postaw Polaków wobec przedstawicieli tej mniejszości narodowej, w tym kwestii stosowania przemocy. W ten nurt wpisywały się opozycyjne inicjatywy związane z historią pogromu kieleckiego, który miał miejsce w lipcu 1946 r.
    The Polish democratic opposition created a polemical to the official vision of modern history (unmasking white spots such as the Katyn massacre, Soviet repressions against Poles, and the history of the Home Army). The subject of Polish-Jewish relations was also addressed, referring to the negative attitudes of Poles towards members of this minority, including the use of violence. The opposition initiatives related to the history of the Kielce pogrom, which took place in July 1946, were part of this trend.

    The commented judgment was formed by the Court of Justice in the term of preliminary ruling, which was asked in the argument between a United Kingdom national who had been resident in France since 1984. As a result of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, the applicant was deprived of her right to vote in European Parliament elections and in municipal elections in their Member State of residence during that period. The issue in dispute concerns citizenship of the European Union and the rights associated with it, including electoral rights. The Court of Justice has unequivocally recognised that when a Member State withdraw from the European Union, its citizens lose their status as citizens of the Union and any privileges attached to it.
    Glosowany wyrok wydany został przez Trybunał Sprawiedliwości w trybie pytania prejudycjalnego, które zostało zadane w ramach sporu pomiędzy obywatelką Zjednoczonego Królestwa mającą miejsce zamieszkania od 1984 r. we Francji. Na skutek wystąpienia Wielkiej Brytanii z Unii Europejskiej wnioskodawczyni pozbawiona została możliwości głosowania w wyborach do Parlamentu Europejskiego i w wyborach lokalnych na terenie Francji z powodu utraty statusu obywatela Unii Europejskiej. Kwestia sporna dotyczyła obywatelstwa Unii Europejskiej i związanych z nim praw, w tym zakresie praw wyborczych. Trybunał Sprawiedliwości jednoznacznie uznał, że w przypadku wystąpienia państwa członkowskiego z Unii Europejskiej obywatele tego kraju tracą status obywatela unijnego i wszelki przywileje z nim związane.

    ‘We got to know each other through our eyes…’ Research on Strategies for the Survival of Jewish Women Functioning above ‘Ground’ on the Aryan Side in Occupied Krakow and its Surroundings The purpose of this article is to show the survival strategies and the everyday life of Jewish women living on the so-called Aryan side in occupied Krakow and its surroundings. Ego-documents are the core source: relations and diaries collected in the Archive of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the Archives of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and the Archives of the Metropolitan Curia in Kraków. A thorough analysis of the phenomenon is very complex, therefore this article only discusses the fate of the Jewish women who co-existed amongst Polish society rather than those who did not have ‘Aryan documents’ or could be betrayed by their appearance, and were thus forced to remain in hiding the whole time. The article not only pays attention to the survival strategies and ways in which they disguised their origins and identities, but it also explores the everyday life, family relationships, work and religious life of these women. The author’ s aim was not to analyse aid provided to Jewish women by non-Jews, or symmetrically, to synthesise problems regarding the selling out of Jews in occupied Krakow. Both issues do appear in the article, but rather as background to the individual cases, since they were, in fact, inseparable elements of any survival strategy on the Aryan side in the GG ‘capital’. The article also notes the absence of certain topics in the interviews, related to the daily life of Jewish women in hiding, which makes a more comprehensive analysis difficult.
