Opis:
Background. Fish and marine animals fat is a source of unique long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA): eicosa- pentaenoic (EPA), docosahexaenoic (DHA) and dipicolinic (DPA). These compounds have a beneficial influence on blood lipid profile and they reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis and disorders of central nervous system. The proper ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acids in diet is necessary to maintain a balance between the effects of eicosanoids synthesized from these acids in the body. Objective. The aim of this study was the evaluation of total fat and cholesterol content and percentage of fatty acids in selected commercial smoked marine fish. Material and methods. The studied samples were smoked marine fish such as: halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat. The percentage total fat content in edible muscles was evaluated via the Folch modified method. The fat was extracted via the Bligh-Dyer modified method. The enzymatic hydrolysis was used to assesses cholesterol content in samples. The content of fatty acids, expressed as methyl esters, was evaluated with gas chromatography. Results. The average content of total fat in 100 g of fillet of halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat amounted respectively to: 14.5 g, 25.7 g, 13.9 g and 13.9 g. The average content of cholesterol in 100 g of halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat was respectively: 54.5 mg, 51.5 mg, 57.5 mg and 130.9 mg. The amount of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was about % of total fatty acids in the analyzed samples. The oleic acid (C18:1 n-9) was the major compound among monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and amounted to 44% of these fatty acids. The percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat was respectively: 31.9%, 45.4%, 40.8% and 37.0%. The percentage of n-3 PUFA in mackerel and bloater was 30.1% and 30.2%, while in halibut and sprat was lower and amounted to 22.5% and 25.6%, respectively. Conclusions. In terms of nutritional magnitude the meat of mackerel and herring, compared to the meat of sprat and halibut has a much better n-3 PUFA content, while relatively low content of cholesterol.
Wprowadzenie. Tłuszcz pochodzący z ryb i zwierząt morskich zawiera unikalne długołańcuchowe wielonienasycone kwasy tłuszczowe (ang.: long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, LC-PUFA), tj. kwas eikozapentaenowy (EPA) oraz kwas dokozaheksaenowy (DHA). Materiał i metody. Materiał do badań stanowiły morskie ryby wędzone tj.: halibut, makrela, pikling i szproty. Zawartość procentową tłuszczu całkowitego w tkance mięsnej oznaczono zmodyfikowaną metodą Folch ’a. Tłuszcz rybi wyekstrahowano za pomocą zmodyfikowanej metody Bligh’a-Dyer ’a. Zawartość cholesterolu oznaczono metodą enzymatycznej hydrolizy. Skład kwasów tłuszczowych w postaci estrów metylowych oznaczono metodą chromatografii gazowej. Wyniki. Średnia zawartość tłuszczu w 100 g filetów z halibuta, makreli, śledzia-piklinga i szprotach wynosiła odpowiednio: 14,5 g, 25,7 g, 13,9 g i 13,9 g. Średnia zawartość cholesterolu w 100 g halibuta, makreli, piklinga i szprotach wynosiła odpowiednio: 54,5 mg, 51,5 mg, 57,5 mg i 130,9 mg. Kwasy tłuszczowe nasycone (NKT) stanowiły % sumy wszystkich kwasów tłuszczowych (KT). Dominującym KT jednonienasyconym (JNKT) był kwas oleinowy (C18:1 n-9) i stanowił około 44% udziału wszystkich JNKT. Udział wielonienasyconych kwasów tłuszczowych (WNKT) w halibucie, makreli, piklingu i szprotach wynosił odpowiednio: 31,9%, 45,4%, 40,8% i 37,0%. Udział WNKT n-3 w makreli i piklingu był zbliżony i wynosił odpowiednio 30,1% i 30,2%, natomiast w halibucie i szprotach był niższy i wynosił odpowiednio 22,5% i 25,6%. Wnioski.

Opis:
For more than 600 years Aqaba flasks were manufactured at Aila. In the Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic periods they occur at a fair number of sites in the southern Levant, in particular in the Arava Valley and the Negev desert. A flask with fish residue was discovered in a domestic context at Petra. The residue was identified as garum prepared from Red Sea fish. The evidence for the production of fish sauce at Aila raises the question of whether flasks and fish products are interconnected. It is suggested here that the wide distribution of flasks is related to the export of garum from Aila. Admittedly, so far the suggestion is largely hypothetical; however, the importance of regional fish trade and consumption, attested at many inland sites, and the fishing facilities on the Red Sea point to a prevailing diet of fish products.

Opis:
The muscles and internal organs of marine animals contain many proteases. These enzymes fulfill different metabolic functions in the living organisms and affect the sensory quality and functional properties of the catch. Their activity depends on the species, life cycle, and the feeding status of the organism. Many proteases of marine origin differ from their counterparts in terrestrial animals in being more active at lower temperature and less resistant to thermal denaturation. Of practical importance in the industry is their role in ripening of salted fish, fish sauces and marinades, modyfying fish protein concentrates, ensilaging of seafood offal, and deskinning of fishery products. The negative effects comprise mainly the early post morten quality degradation of the catch and deterioration of the rheological properties of fish gels. Proteolytic preparations form different marine sources may be used successfully in food processing and as industrial enzymes, e. g. tanning agents.

The pycnodont fish Gyrodusis reported for the first time from the Lower Cretaceous of Germany based on two lower jaw elements from the Hauterivian and Barremian. The stratigraphic and geographic distribution of Gyrodus is summarized. Gyrodusranges from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous making it one of the longest living pycnodonts. Unambiguous Late Cretaceous records of Gyrodus are still missing. Gyrodus displays its widest distribution and greatest taxonomic diversity in the Late Jurassic. The distribution of Gyrodusimplies not only near−coastal mode of life but also a pelagic lifestyle conversely to most other pycnodonts. External body features and function of the unpaired fins support this interpretation.

In this study, the total mercury concentration was determined in the muscles, liver and gills of six fish species (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walb., carp Cyprinus carpio L., bream Abramis brama L., perch Perca fluviatilis L., ide Leuciscus idus L. and flounder Platichthys flesus L.). The fish were acquired from October to November 2012. Mercury was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry using thermal decomposition, compounds of mercury and amalgamation. The mercury content in fish organs reached 0.006-0.168 (in mg kgˉ¹ wet weight) in muscles, 0.001-0.027 in gills and 0.003-0.045 in the liver. The muscles of perch and ide had significantly more Hg compared to the other fish’s muscles (P≤0.05). The liver and gills of perch, ide and flounder contained more Hg than the same tissues of the other fish (P≤0.05). Generally, the highest Hg content was determined in muscles (except rainbow trout) (P≤0.05), whereas the lowest Hg content was found in gills (except perch) (P≤0.05). The content of Hg in gills of perch did not differ from the one in the liver (P>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the weight or length of a fish and the Hg concentration in its tissues, except for the length and Hg in the gills of carp. However, a statistically significant positive correlation between the body weight and the Hg levels in fish appeared only in the case of the organs of ide (P≤0.004) and muscles of carp (P≤0.038). The correlation between the factor condition and the content of Hg, albeit positive (0.106 < r < 0.811) except for the organs of flounder, was not statistically significant (P>0.05).

Over recent decades, the Arctic region has been subjected to rapid climate change stemming from global warming. The advance of Atlantic waters to high latitudes is notable. The increased abundance of fish, such as cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), has been reported near the western coast of Spitsbergen and entering fjords together with Atlantic waters. This study used multifrequency acoustics to measure fish distribution and abundance in 2013–2014 in two Arctic fjords, the colder Hornsund, which is typically of Arctic character, and the warmer Kongsfjorden, which is more of Atlantic character. The study revealed a bimodal fish size distribution with larger fish in the deep parts of fjords, and smaller fish distributed in more shallow waters. An evident increase in the abundance of large fish, most probably Atlantic cod, was observed in Hornsund and especially in Kongsfjorden in 2014 in comparison to 2013. The intense inflow of Atlantic water on the shelf in 2014 is suggested as the explanation for this phenomenon.

Introduction and objective. Mercury is ubiquitous in the biosphere, occurring in the air, water, land, and soil, as well as in living organisms. Excessive exposure to mercury is associated with a wide range of adverse health effects including damage to the central nervous system and the kidneys. Mercury exists in many different forms in the environment which produce various patterns of toxicity. Protection of the food chain from contamination by mercury is an important task in the protection of health of the human population. Objective. The aim of the study was to monitor the concentrations of mercury in fish and fish products from food retail in Eastern Slovakia, and from the Ružín water reservoir, Košice district. Materials and method. A total of 384 samples of fish and fish products were collected for the study. Atomic absorption spectrometry standard solutions for mercury were used at a wavelength of 254 nm. Results. The majority of countries and global organizations now enforce a maximum concentration of mercury in fish of approximately 0.5 mg.kg-1. All of the 184 samples (50.52 % of the total fish samples studied) were above the maximum level set by the European Commission Regulation for mercury in fish. Conclusions. The systematic analytical control of contaminants in food is important. Mercury is concentrated in seafood, products of prey and marine fish, fish from rivers and lakes in the areas contaminated by mercury. According to the findings of this study with analyzer AMA 254, the consumption is not recommended of fish, especially seafood (meat of shark, swordfish and king mackerel), for selected groups of the population: children, women of childbearing age, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Opis:
This study investigated musculoskeletal symptoms among fish trimmers (skinners and polishers) in a fish processing factory in Ghana. The methods used included administration of questionnaire, walk through observation, interview, task analysis and future workshop. All 50 female participants answered and submitted their questionnaires. Of the 11 operations performed by skinners only 1 was rated as low risk. Also of the 12 operations performed by polishers only 2 were rated as low risk. Neck side bending, neck flexion, prolonged standing, shoulder elevation, abducted arms, repetitious reaching forward and wrist deviation were observed in most operations. This corresponds with questionnaire results in which musculoskeletal symptoms were mostly prevalent in the neck, the shoulder, the low back, the wrist/hand and the knee regions. There was no significant correlation (p < .05) between musculoskeletal symptoms and age, working hours and length of service. Task redesign, workplace changes and worker training were suggested to improve the work.

Oceny zawartości substancji niepożądanych w rybach i przetworach rybnych na polskim rynku dokonano na podstawie badania 9 gatunków ryb (wolnożyjących i hodowlanych), 12 asortymentów konserw, 6 asortymentów ryb wędzonych i 3 asortymentów ryb solonych i marynat. Wszystkie badane gatunki ryb i żywnościowe przetwory rybne pochodzą z polskiego rynku i obejmują większość gatunków ryb i asortymentów produktów rybnych konsumowanych przez Polaków. Badano zawartości metali toksycznych (kadmu – Cd, ołowiu – Pb i rtęci – Hg), pestycydów chloroorganicznych (ΣHCH, HCB, ΣDDT), polichlorowanych bifenyli wskaźnikowych (6 kongenerów), polibromowanych difenyloeterów (7 kongenerów), dioksyn i dioksynopodobnych polichlorowanych bifenyli.
The assessment of the content of undesirable substances in fish and fish products on the Polish market was based on the studies on 9 fish species (wild-living and farmed), 12 assortments of preserves, 6 assortments of smoked fish and 3 assortments of salted fish and pickles. All fish and fish food products originate from the Polish market and include the majority of fish species and the assortment of fish products consumed by the Poles. The content of toxic metals (cadmium – Cd, lead – Pb and mercury – Hg), organochlorine pesticides (ΣHCH, HCB, ΣDDT), indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (6 congeners), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (7 congeners), dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls was studied. It was found that the studied species of fish and fish products have relatively low content of these toxic substances. The threat, especially for pregnant women and young children, may be posed only by Baltic salmon and trout, smoked Baltic salmon and smoked Baltic sprat due to increased levels of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. Smoked Baltic sprat is also characterized by increased content of cadmium. The studies have demonstrated that the consumption of other species of fish and fish products from the Polish market is safe for health.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fish-based feed materials, as a source of readily available protein contained in fish broth and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) found in fish oil, on the health of piglets and rearing results. The experiment was conducted on a commercial pig fattening farm. The study involved a total of 80 weaners with an approximate body weight of 15 kg. The experiment was carried out over a period of 40 days. Feed samples were subjected to laboratory analyses. Blood samples were collected from experimental group animals to determine serum biochemical and immunological parameters. The body weight gains of weaners, mortality rates and average feed intake per animal were calculated for the entire experimental period. The addition of fish broth and fish oil significantly improved the n3:n6 fatty acid ratio in diets. The presence of EPA and DHA in the experimental diet could have had a positive health effect on piglets, comparable with that exerted by therapeutic doses of zinc often administered to pigs of this age group. During the experiment, feed conversion ratio (FCR) gain was considerably reduced in the experimental group, with similar daily gains in the control and experimental group.

A total of 2398 fish specimens (1091 Percidae and 1307 Cyprinidae) belonging to 16 species (3 Percidae and 13 Cyprinidae), caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined within December 1994-March 1997. The parasites found were identified as belonging to 63 taxa (61 species as well as Diplostomum spp. flukes and glochidia Unionidae gen. sp. which could not be identified to species) of the Microsporea (1), Protozoa (1), Myxozoa (2), Monogenea (10), Digenea (15), Cestoda (11), Nematoda (11), Acanthocephala (5), Hirudinea (1), Mollusca (1), Copepoda (4), and Branchiura (1). The percids and cyprinids were found to support 37 and 40 parasitic taxa, respectively, the taxon-richest parasite fauna occurring in zander, Sander lucioperca (26 taxa), followed by carp bream, Abramis brama, (24), European perch, Perca fluviatilis (24), roach, Rutilus rutilus (19), ruffe, Gymnocelphlus cernuus (15), and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (11). The remaining fish species hosted less than 10 parasitic species each. Metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum, found in about 37% of the fish examined, and Tylodelphys clavata, recorded in about 24% of the fish, proved the commonest parasites. The study showed the Vistula Lagoon cyprinid and percid parasite fauna to be dominated by freshwater species, frequencies of their occurrence in the brackishwater lagoon being lower than those in freshwater reservoirs. Frequencies of the 6 marine parasitic species found in the lagoon were, too, lower than those in the sea. It is suggested that some of the parasites (Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Diplozoon paradoxum of the Monogenea, Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata of the Digenea, and Achtheres percarum of the Copepoda) prefer brackishwater habitats.

Opis:
Fossil utricular otoliths (= lapilli) from cypriniform fishes have long been recorded from European Oligocene and Neogene freshwater and oligohaline sediments. Until now, their determination was limited to the family level owing to the lack of morphological investigations on lapilli of Recent cypriniforms. The present study introduces a terminology for the lapillus morphology that is based on the lapilli of 134 specimens of 20 cyprinid and one balitorid species. It is demonstrated that the lapillus has valuable characters for taxonomic classification. As a result, fossil lapilli from Oligocene and Miocene continental deposits from the western Mediterranean, the Swiss and the South German Molasse Basin, the Mainz Basin, and additionally from Anatolia could be determined. Nine species were identified: aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp., aff. Alburnoides sp., aff. Barbus sp., cf. Leuciscussp., Palaeoleuciscus sp., Palaeotinca moeddeni sp. nov., Palaeotinca sp. 1, aff. Phoxinus sp., and aff. Rutilus sp. vel aff. Scardinius sp. Our study includes the oldest record of a Phoxinus−related and a Palaeotinca species from Europe. Additionally, aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp. and aff. Alburnoides have been identified as fossils for the first time. The determination of the fossil lapilli has been supported by means of pharyngeal teeth, with the exception of aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp., whose lapilli were found together with pharyngeal teeth of Palaeocarassius sp. It is suggested that these so−called Palaeocarassius pharyngeal teeth do not belong to an ancestor of the Carassiuslineage, but to a forerunner of the Abramis or Alburnuslineage. Our results support the previously described turnover in the Paratethys freshwater fish fauna about 17–18 Ma ago, when Palaeotinca spp. became extinct and the first appearance of Palaeoleuciscussp. and Palaeocarassiussp. (= aff. Abramissp. vel aff. Alburnus sp.) occurred. The Oligocene and Miocene cypriniform fishes did not evolve any provincialism from southern France throughout the Molasse Basin to the Mainz Basin.

Fish target estimation when using single-beam echosounder data is based on solving integral equation by inverse technique with probability density functions (PDFs) of echo envetope and heam pattern as known variabies. Typically - by setting threshold on echo level - only main-tobe observation are used due to difficulties in beam pattern PDF evaluation and signal-to-noise ratio constraints. This paper presents a method that uses side-tobe observations in the beam pattern probability density function and all collected echo peak values. These side-tobe echo observations indifferentiable when using single-beam system are combined with those from main-tobe. The smoothed Expectation Maximization metbod (EMS) is used to estimate densities and acoustic sizes of fish main-tobe with side-tobe observations.

Plastic is one of the main pollutant sources that are difficult to decompose and then carried into the ocean and fragmented into smaller parts (microplastics) due to UV radiation and water currents. Their small size means that microplastics are often ingested by aquatic organisms, such as fish. This research aimed to determine the presence, abundance, and types of microplastics in the digestive tract of four dominant fishes landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, i.e. threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), mackerel (Rastrelliger sp.), threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicus), and hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). We found microplastics in the digestive tract of four selected fishes with a frequency of occurrence of 100%. The concentration of microplastics in fish digestive tracts is relatively high, with a value range of 12 ±2.86 to 28.33 ±8.11 particles∙ind.-1. Microplastics were found in films, fibres, fragments, and granule shape types with various colours: brown, purple, blue, black, green, transparent, and yellow. The polymers found were polystyrene (PS), nylon, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyurethane (PU), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The present study provides baseline data for microplastics contamination in commercial fish species landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia. The fact that we discovered PU, the most harmful polymer, piques our attention.

Alien species are now found all over the world. New fish parasites have been unintentionally introduced with infected alien fish imported for aquaculture or have sometimes spread with their intermediate invertebrate hosts transported in the ballast waters of ships. Four alien fish parasites have been recorded in Polish coastal lakes and lagoons, all parasitising eels. Three were introduced with the final host – the Japanese eel – introduced for aquaculture (Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae and Pseudodactylogyrus bini) and one (Paratenuisentis ambiguus) with its sole intermediate host (Gammarus tigrinus).

Based on the fish tank symbolism in the dream books some features are derived and determined. These features are typical of the reception and feeling of the so-called imaginative pictures which are typical of imagining, feeling, experiencing and realizing of the conceptual-assessing and sensitive impressions. The assumptions connected with the observation of the object, as well as with being there (i.e. in a fish tank), are presented and discussed. These are the features which are determined both separately and mutually and they describe the states in question. The reptiles and fish (mentioned in the title), according to the interpretations quoted, are both the element which fills up a fish tank and the projection of its positive character (or a negativeone in the case of its absence). On the other hand, in a non-visible but perceptible way they become involved with the subject that is observing them in a fish tank and then with a human being and that human being is to some extent identified with that subject. All those elements mentioned above, together with the characterized semantics of those images (i.e. a fish tank with reptiles and fish inside), are the key to understanding the way the human consciousness is able to transfer itself into another existence, with the interpretation of the visible and non-visible world as experienced by the human.

Opis:
Introducing Stanley Fish in the context of his position in the American academia, the author of the article focuses on the concept and mechanisms of interpretation in Fish’s understanding, who ascribes to it the function of a ubiquitous epistemological tool for man as homo interpretans. With this purpose in mind, the article juxtaposes Fish’s ideas with hermeneutics and structuralism and reveals their constructivist nature. This does not lead, nevertheless, to relativism as culture is grounded on a solid rock of fossilized meaning, which has been constituted as a result of previous consensual interpretations within a social group. This rock of fossilized meaning is a starting point for the negotiation of further meanings, which leads to the transparency of the acts of interpretation in everyday life for the people who preform them. Such existence in the world understood has its ethical and philosophical consequences, which the article briefly examines in its conclusions.
Powoduje to, że interpretacja w życiu codziennym pozostaje niewidoczna, a my sami jesteśmy jej nieświadomi.

Opis:
The monogenean ectoparasite genera Dactylogyrus and Gyrodactylus are hyperdiverse, and yet monogenean communities infecting freshwater fish in the northern Holarctic are variable and often impoverished. This is a result of extinctions during periods of glaciation when the host fishes experienced range contraction. Fish species recolonised northern Europe by one of three routes; stenohaline fishes recolonised from the Black Sea basin via DanubeRhine or Dnieper−Dniester−Vistula connections. These fish retain complex rich monogenean faunas with numerous species of Dactylogyrus and Paradiplozoon. Anadromous fishes, recolonising via marine migrations along the coast, and cold−water fishes surviving in refugia close to the ice sheets, have impoverished monogenean faunas, characterised by gyrodactylid and ancyrocephalid species. However, there may be great complexity, due to the evolution of new hostparasite interactions within specific watersheds before, during and after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This is demonstrated using examples from the sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and the bullheads (Cottus gobio). Finally, the evolution of Gyrodactylus salaris from a clade of G. thymalli is described, and the role of glaciation in stimulating the evolution of numerous clades of the latter is discussed. This latter example represents a unique opportunity to study speciation by host shift in real time.

At present fish processing industry is one of the most dynamically developing groups belonging to food industry in Poland. In the last ten years the sold production of fish processing industry increased over three times. Fish processing companies reveal a great ability to adapt to turbulently changing conditions of the market game. It happens this way, among others, as a result of creating competitiveness by widely understood consolidation processes and creating strong organizational and spatial ties of an international range. At the same time European market of fish processing guaranteed not only economic standards for already existing companies, but also became an impulse for creating new production units offering their products and services in the European Union market. The article attempts to determine the weight of factors and advantages of location for fish processing industry in Poland and their influence on the changes in the spatial structure. Besides the changes in distribution, the food processing companies in Poland were also characterized taking into consideration their concentrationin view of the theory of cluster.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to examine case studies of production parameters and cost/income relationships of extensive pond fish systems. There is a global increase in demand for food, which presents huge challenges for terrestrial and aquatic food production to ensure sustainability. With the rise of aquaculture, fish meal – free, cereal-based carp production is becoming increasingly valuable from the perspective of sustainability. In addition, based on its production volume, cereal-based carp production is the third most significant fish species in global terms, while carp is also dominant among fish species in Hungarian pond systems. Data collected during the analysis were processed using descriptive statistical methods. To analyse the efficiency of production, changes in income were examined using different combinations of production parameters and certain cost items (ceteris paribus). Based on the obtained results, it can be stated that, in the case of the modelled farm, a 0.56 thousand € per hectare income can be realised. The initial cost and average weight at the moment of sales can greatly influence the profitability of a farm.
W celu zbadania wydajności produkcji zbadano zmiany wielkości dochodów przez zastosowanie różnych kombinacji parametrów produkcyjnych i niektórych pozycji kosztowych (ceteris paribus).

Opis:
Fish processing industry for several years now is considered as one of the fastest developing sectors of food industry in Poland. It also plays an important role in supplying the EU market in processed fish products. However, there is an array of threats for its further functioning that have roots both in external environment (closer and further) and in internal environment. The present problems of national fish processing industry have a very diverse genesis. Among them there is e.g. the problem of supplying in raw materials, which was indicated already before the accession to the EU structures, but there are also new problems connected with e.g. the shortage of labour force or the lack of modern institutional support. The identification of difficulties should be seen not only in short- or long term perspective. It is also worth to see their importance and mutual relations that can either strengthen or weaken the results of economic activity of single entities or the entire sector. Another important thing is also the separation of episodic and cyclical phenomena, which may disturb correct interpretation of long-term trends in particular. The aim of the paper is the identification of basic problems connected with the functioning of national fish processing companies and an attempt to specify their influence on basic structures of the industry, including the structure of production, employment, market and ultimately the spatial structure.

Acoustical monitoring of fish at an electric barrier was performed using EY 500 split beam echo-sounder with the transducer directed horizontally. Stationary measurements done during the operating barrier and when the electric power was switched off have shown statistically significant difference in the number of fish approaching the barrier, 11 fish in the first case, and over 280 in the second. The electric barrier affected more strongly large fish than the small ones. Mobile measurements performed in a basin from which fish were approaching barrier revealed the higher fish concentration just in front of the operating barrier than elsewhere.

During over thirty years of development of echosounders, the acquisition software has developed different kind of charts for data visualization. In the paper the concept of creation of dynamic echograms from the data acquired in acoustical surveys is presented. As the modern split-beam echosounders allow for nonambiguous localization of targets in the water column, it is possible to visualize them in 3D coordinate system. Virtual Reality Modeling Language VRML is a popular language used in modeling of virtual reality. Using its build-in properties, it is relatively easy to visualize movement of fish treated as an object in any coordinate system. VRML despite the typical application in computer graphics is also used in other various fields. For instance in chemistry it is used for visualization of atom particles, in medicine for modeling of human organs, in astronomy for visualization of trajectories of the stars and in geography and navigation for creation of 3D maps. Hence, in this paper we describe its application in fisheries. Additionally, as the any WWW browser can be equipped with VRML plugin 3D fish visualization can be redistributed in the Internet.

The aim of the article is to critically asses the theories of interpretation developed by two prominent philosophers, namely Stanley Fish and Ronald Dworkin. After first describing and reconstructing their ideas the paper then identifies problems concerning the stance according to which everything in applying law depends on interpretation. The critic is based on the Ludwig’s Wittgenstein remark that there must be grasping the rule (or more broadly a meaning of any word) which is not interpretation, otherwise we end up in regressus ad infinitum fallacy. Paper’s main claim is that although the theory of R. Dworkin is not fully free from defects it has nevertheless more explanation power than the opponent’s propositions.

A single specimen of the axial skeleton of an elongate fossil stromateoid fish, collected from the Upper Miocene (Messinian) St. Eugène locality of north−western Algeria, is identified as a new species Ariomma geslini sp. nov. of the family Ariommatidae. It is based on a unique combination of features, including morphology and arrangement of pleural ribs, structure and orientation of anterior portion of the anal fin, unique sequential arrangement of anal−fin pterygiophores in relation to the haemal spines, and presence of large cycloid scales and meristics. The morphology and orientation of the first anal−fin pterygiophore indicate that A. geslini sp. nov. is probably related to the amphi−Atlantic species A. bondi and A. melanum. The analysis of the fossil record of the Stromateoidei suggests that the ariommatids were already in existence at least as early as the Eocene.

Dead fish due to reversal of water mass in floating net cages cultivation, most of which cannot be sold because they are not suitable for consumption or processing into food. One effort that can be done to increase the added value of dead fish is processed into silage. Silage is a very good feed ingredient for fish and poultry because of its low metabolic basal energy. This study aims to determine the effect of increasing the scale of production on the characteristics of fish silage quality. The research method used was experimental with a complete randomized design consisting of 3 treatments namely a) scale of production of 1 kg of fish, b) scale of production of 5 kg of fish, and c) scale of production of 25 kg of fish. The three treatments were repeated 3 times. The parameters observed were protein content, fat, ash content, water content and amino acid composition of silage fluid and rendemen. Data obtained from all observation variables except amino acid compositions were analyzed by F test, if significant continued with Duncan test, each test was carried out at 95% confidence level. The results of the study obtained conclusions that the quality characteristics of fish silage made from dead fish due to reversal of water mass were not affected by the scale of the production process. The silage quality characteristics produced in this study were protein content of 16.02%, fat content of 8.98%, ash content of 2.35%, carbohydrate content of 2.45% and moisture content of 70.2%. Rendemen is 62.72%.

Acoustic methods could play an important role in studies of fish group behaviour in relation to environmental factors, being one of the most promising tools of research of ecosystems. The paper presents new conceptions of treatment acoustic, biological and hydrological data collected during surveys of pelagic fish resources. A method of macrosounding was enriched by complex imaging of environmental factors for single transects. More developed version, called "matrix macrosounding", deslinied for description of selected cross-sections, characteristic for the Baltic ecosystem, was introduced and examples of its application for short-term or long-term ecological studies were given. Basic diel fish environmental preferences were estimated owing to correlating acoustic and hydrological data collected over the period 1981-1996 in the southern Baltic. In a consequence, preliminary models of day life-eycle of fish in relation to main environmental factors were formulated and applied for fish behavioural studies. Examples of fish behaviour models, determined for the autumn are shown.

The reaction of blood cells in all studied species had a similar character, whilst, also revealing distinctions. Fast activation of immune processes was found in the pelagic yellowfin. These changes were slower at the coastal stone sculpin. Quantitative changes of blood cells were minor in the coastal nonendemic perch. After four days of exposure, the cells of fish showed signs of destructive processes: strong vacuolization of cytoplasm and partial destruction of the cell membrane. In the cell nucleus the chromatin was condensed, the perinuclear space had expanded and the nuclear membrane had been partly destroyed. In another experiment, stone sculpin and perch were first exposed to phenol for 30 days and then they were kept for another 30 days in water without phenol. In the kidneys and spleen of stone sculpin the processes of lymphopoiesis were observed, whereas in perch the processes of lymphopoiesis and myelopoiesis occurred.

Opis:
Wielkopolska (the Greater Poland region) is an area extremely abounding with lakes of glacial origin as well as with the developed river network. In accordance with the rules of survival the settlements were located over the water bodies – therefore these areas were populated quite early. Fishing – apart from gathering – is a primitive way of obtaining food. It constituted the basis of nutrition for people in the past. At the beginning it was associated with gatherers and hunters, then with farmers for whom it became a marginal way of securing food. Additionally, fishing among the inhabitants of Greater Poland was pushed on to the sidelines by a monopoly of the ruler as well as by feudal privileges concerning an access to waters. The fishermen’s guilds as well as leasing the lakes and rivers limited considerably former common access to fish. The title – “Loach – the poor’s fish” – makes an explicit reference to some old Polish proverbs saying that: A loach for the poor here, there and everywhere (Chudobie wszędy piskorz) or Wherever the poor appear, not more than a loach do they get (Ubogiemu wszędzie ledwo piskorz się dostaje). It is a point of departure for proving a thesis about the decreasing percentage of fish in the diet of peasantry in Greater Poland. Loach, a small fish, once quite widespread in the muddy ditches and in the overgrowing old river-beds, preying in the dark, was available to the poorer part of the society in case of threat of hunger. Because of the restrictions which were being introduced over the centuries, very seldom did peasantry and common people pay attention to fish turning to fishing only in the conditions of threat (of hunger, disease or death). Mechanism of obtaining food seems to have been simple once: dishes were prepared with the use of products which were easily accessible and gained through one’s own efforts. Greater Poland, as an agricultural region, used the fruits of the earth. The conditions mentioned above contributed to the fact that a peculiar diet came into being. This diet, even in case of fasting periods, so frequent in the past, considered fish to a very small extent.

Opis:
Effects of salting, pickling and smoking processing methods on the mineral composition in fish products were investigated. The concentrations of Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Se in fish products were determined during subsequent stages of processing in raw fish, semi-processed products and ready products. Fresh fish contained macro-elements in the following order: K > P > Na > Ca > Mg. The tendency was similar in semi-processed and ready products, except for the dominance of sodium. The sodium content in marinated products was three-fold higher than in fresh fish and twelve-fold higher in salted herring and cold-smoked fish. The sodium content in a 100 g portion of salted herring exceeded by six-fold the recommended daily allowance and by two-fold the tolerated amount. The content of K, Mg and P in marinated and salted herring tended to decrease throughout processing. No significant differences were observed in concentrations of Ca. The order of the concentrations of microelements was as follows: Zn > Fe > Cu > Se > Mn. The content of these elements in fish products was similar to their levels in fresh fish and corresponded to the following shares of the recommended allowances: Se up to 20%; Cu up to 11%; Zn up to 6%; Mn up to 1%; Fe up to 10%. Disadvantageous changes in the mineral composition in fish during processing result from water losses during technological processes, but the primary cause of mineral loss was leaching when the products were soaked in brine solutions with a high sodium content. Significant changes in the content of minerals in salted and pickled herring decreased the nutritional value of these products. Smaller mineral losses that occurred during smoking meant that these products were more valuable nutritionally in relation to minerals.

Klimkówka Dam Reservoir
spatial distribution
density of fish
Opis:
The Klimkówka Dam Reservoir is situated on the Ropa River in southern Poland. The surface area of the reservoir is about 306 ha and its capacity is 43.5 hm3. Acoustic surveys were conducted both in the daytime and at night using a SIMRAD EY-500 split beam 120kHz echo sounder. Maps of the spatial distribution and density of fish were drawn up, and the fish species structure, size, number and biomass were estimated based on acoustic surveys and supervised net catches. The highest fish density at night occurred in the river tributary zones (836 fish/ha). In this area at night fish density was twice as high as in the central region of the reservoir. The density figure for the whole reservoir was 638 fish/ha and was 1.4 limes higher than that in the Solina Reservoir and from ten- to twenty-fold lower than in several other studied lakes. Fish catches performed with pelagic trawIs and net sets revealed the presence of nine fish species. Lake and river trout species which had been introduced to the reservoir were not noted. The fish biomass was estimated to be 11.5 tons, or 44.4 kg/ha, and was from three to 14 times lower in comparison to the estimated figure in several other lakes.

Opis:
In this study, the results of fish composition, distribution and abundance are presented according to the effects of water physicochemical parameters from the Livoq Lake in the eastern part of Kosovo. The fish specimens were sampled in six sampling stations in 2018 by using a variety of methods, including electro-fishing devices, fishing rod and cast nets. The measured physicochemical parameters included: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, saturation of dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids. In total, 320 fish specimens were collected, belonging to 10 species of the following 5 families: Cyprinidae, Silurideae, Esocideae, Percideae and Centrarhideae. The most species rich family is Cyprinidae with 6 species in total: Cyprinus caprio Linnaeus, 1758, Rutilus rutilus Linnaeus, 1758, Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758, Squalius cephalus Linnaeus, 1758, Leucaspius delineatus Linnaeeus, 1758 and Alburnus alburnus Linnaeus, 1758. Four other families are represented by one species each: Silurideae with Siluris glanis Linnaeus, 1758, Esocidea with Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758, Percideae with Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758 and Centrarhideae with Lepomis gibosus Linnaeus, 1758. The knowledge on fish fauna in Kosovo is still very fragmentary, and this investigation contributes to determining the qualitative composition and abundance features based on the water physicochemical parameters in this part of the Balkan Peninsula.

Opis:
Hydroacoustical measurements of fish population in the shallow Malta reservoir (mean depth <3 m) were performed in September and October 2008 using mobile horizontal beam. During the different time of day and night the same transects were covered in two directions, from the dam towards the upper part of the reservoir and back. During the day the number of fish registered on the returned way was lower than on the way forward in 83% of cases, and during the night in 67% of cases, however these differences were not statistically significant. Observation of fish at different distances from the boat have shown small avoidance reaction, especially for the small fish, that was similar during the day and at night, thus suggesting that mainly noise was responsible for the fish avoidance. Nevertheless, in shallow waters boat avoidance by fishes is of much less importance than in marine environment.

The paper investigates the extent to which Stanley Fish’s constructivism and E. D. Hirsch’s hermeneutics are similar in their assumptions and program. Although it is commonly accepted that they constitute polar opposites of literary theory, Fish and Hirsch are embedded in the theoretical discourse of New Criticism’s approach to literary studies and develop in a form of critique of the formalist stance. The problems they encounter and the way they approach literary texts are shaped by formalist assumptions that eventually lead to serious discrepancies between their postulated theory and practice. Both theories of interpretation seem to be operating within a similar framework of ideas which determines their understanding of the problems regarding literary studies as well as their solutions. What appears to be even more important is that the ‘‘textual” theoretical framework itself causes serious problems for both programmes of literary hermeneutics.

Vaccination is a most cost-effective way of controlling infectious diseases in fish. However, some vaccination techniques when applied to hatchery conditions are not as effective as we expect them to be. Modern molecular biology techniques offer a number of opportunities for improving existing bacterial or viral vaccines or creating new ones. One of the most promising trends in vaccinology is development of DNA vaccination. DNA vaccines are based on the gene encoding specific antigen, which is expressed in vaccinated organism and induces the host immune system. DNA vaccines, compared to conventional vaccines, have many advantages including ability to trigger wider immune response, bigger stability and possibility of large-scale production. To date, there are several reports indicating effectiveness of DNA vaccines used against fish pathogens.

The basis of operation in every type of fish processing machine, including the spatial orientation of a fish's position in relation to its cutting planes, forms the foundation of their physical proprieties. This article introduces a new way of orientating different species and sizes of a fish's positions, of which direct and indirect measurements are utilized, having chosen the parameters of body shape in measurement units and angular degrees. The probability of getting the proper position of orientation a fish's, in which the longitudinal plane of symmetry is parallel and right-angled to the cutting knives, is determined by a study of the experiment's physical model. The results confirm the possibility of creating machines of small dimensions for processing many species of fresh-water fish, controlled by the help of a mechatronic system.

Background. Globalisation is the direct or indirect source and cause of many economic, social, political and cultural processes and phenomena. These processes also affect agribusiness and food production. One of the important developments in recent decades is the ever-increasing scale of food adulteration. Its consequence is a reduction in the level of food safety, both in its health and economic aspects. The latter is due to the presence of impaired, or even adulterated, food on the market, which exposes consumers to non-equivalent exchanges. Sectors particularly vulnerable to these illegal trade practices include meat and fish products. Objective. The aim of the article is to identify the dominating methods/categories of food adulteration using the example of the Polish market for the food production sectors of meat and fish. Material and methods. The research was conducted using data from the Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection (AFQI), the official food control institution responsible for quality and food adulteration controls in Poland. The study covered the period from 2010 to 2020. Results. Research has shown an exceptionally significant level and diversity of methods of adulterating meat and fish products. These products are adulterate much more often than other food products. The conducted research has shown many methods and ways of adulterating both meat and fish products. It is worth emphasizing that the greater concentration of counterfeiting methods concerns meat products. The study revealed an extremely significant variety of adulterating methods for meat and fish products, significantly beyond those typically cited in the literature. Conclusions. The results of the research indicate the need to intensify official food controls on the Polish market. In particular, this should apply to the group of meat and fish products due to their high level of adulteration.

The young coal mining pits (young pits) found in West Aceh cause many problems. These pits that form ponds have the potential to be utilized for aquaculture activities. However, the main problem faced in the young pits is the high content of heavy metals. This makes the ponds dangerous for fish farming. Hazardous heavy metals in coal mines are Pb and Fe. Humic acid is one of the materials that can be used to minimize heavy metals and increase water pH. The use of humic acid is more efficient because this technology is easy and cheap and the raw materials are abundant. Humic acid acts as a substance of cation exchange ability found in compost. This research has a long-term goal of making humic acid contained in compost as an alternative material that can minimize heavy metals Pb and Fe, so that it can be used for fish farming activities. The specific objective is to determine the best capacity (dose of humic acid) in minimizing heavy metals and increasing the pH of young pond water in former mines and its effect on fish farming. This research method used a completely randomized design consisting of one factor, namely the dose of humic acid (0 g/L, 2.5 g/L, 5 g/L, 7.5 g/L) and three replications. The results showed that humic acid was able to minimize the content of heavy metals Pb and Fe in coal mine water with the best dose of 5 g/L. The percentage reduction produced was more than 90%. The results of fish rearing using ex-mining pond water treated with humic acid showed that the survival rate and growth rate of fish were higher.

Muscle proteases are located mainly in the lysosomes, in the sarcoplasm, and in the extracellular matrix of the connective tissue surrounding each cell. The lysosomal proteases, cathepsins, have optimum activity in the acidic range, although many of them retain high activity also 1 or 2 pH units away from the optimum value. Among the cathepsins there are endopeptidases and exopeptidases. Most cathepsins hydrolyse several proteins of the myofibrils. The major protease of the lysosomes in fish and squid muscles is cathepsin D, an aspartyl endoproteinase. Although it is present in the muscle fibre itself, its generally rather low activity at low temperature limits its significance in tenderization of refrigerated fish of most species. Cathepsin L, a cysteinyl protease, is involved in autolysis and softening in matured chum salmon. Cathepsin B, a cysteinyl carboxypeptidase, is capable to attack also some myofibrillar proteins. Cathepsin A or carboxypeptidase A, and cathepsin C, a dipeptidyl hydrolase and dipeptidyl transferase, contribute to the hydrolysis of muscle proteins in a concerted action with the other cathepsins.

Opis:
Fish passes are essential elements for maintaining continuity for migrating fish. Without them, fish would be unable to undertake migration to satisfy their basic life needs. These devices must meet a range of requirements related to the size of individual fish pass elements and the hydrodynamic parameters of the flowing water. Despite efforts, it is not always possible to meet these requirements. There are many causes of errors in the design and construction of fish passes, and each case should be assessed individually. The most severe consequence of these errors is the obstruction of fish migrating upstream. In this study, an analysis of the permeability of a semi-natural fish pass was conducted for fish. This assessment was carried out using two methods. In the first approach, the required geometric dimensions of the fish pass elements were determined based on the dimensions of individuals living in the river channel. In the second approach, the dimensions were extracted from publications dedicated to slot fish passes, as the studied object resembles such a design. The analysis revealed that the fish pass does not fulfil its intended role. All fish species living in the Nidzica River channel face difficulties in passing through the fish pass, including the brook trout, for which the object is specifically designed. The main errors stem from the design and construction, resulting in exceeded values, primarily in the hydrodynamic parameters, rendering the fish pass impassable. The study also aimed to develop corrective recommendations considering the latest scientific developments.

The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method is widely used to identify various types of cells. In comparison to cultivation dependent methods, identification of microbes by FISH is easier and generally takes several hours. A review of improvements to the FISH method has been presented, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as examples of application. Particular consideration was given to the efficiency of identification of microbes in samples taken from sewerage. The effectiveness of the method was confirmed by the results obtained in samples from the membrane bioreactor.

This study aims to optimize the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) in pump water from fish flour factories through electrocoagulation technology and to determine the effects of the main operation parameters. Pump water has high conductivity (40.1 mS), due to the presence of dissolved salts and contains high concentration of organic substances (12,360 mg/L of TSS and 520 mg/L of fats). In this study, pump water was treated in an electrocoagulation reactor with aluminum electrodes using Response Surface Methodology with a 3k factorial design based on two factors, current intensity (I) of 8-13 A and treatment time (t) of 20-40 minutes. The percentage of TSS removed from the water was used as the response variable. The results revealed that I and t significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the process. In accordance, the optimal operational parameters for TSS removal were I = 13 A and t = 30 minutes. Using these conditions, TSS removal efficiency of 99.9% was achieved. The sewage sludge generated with these optimal process conditions indicated 19.3% of ash content, 6.2% of salt, 1.7% of aluminum, 0.3% of iron, 0.4% of potassium, 256 ppm of zinc, and 2.1% of phosphorus. Hence, the results of this study affirm that electrocoagulation can be considered as a solution for marine pollution caused by fishing industries.

Fish and seafood production has grown steadily in the past five decades. Total world fisheries and aquaculture production reached 167.2 million tonnes in 2014 [1]. Intensive fish production triggers growth in the amount of waste processing, which has serious environmental impacts. Utilization and energy recovery from fish waste have become areas of interest for the global economy. Specialized methods and techniques have been developed to acquire biomethane, biodiesel and biofertilizer from fish biomass. Also, using physical, biochemical and thermochemical processes, relevant substances (such as fish protein hydrolysate, natural pigments, chitosan and collagen) can be obtained.

Median Paired Fin Propulsion used by fishes like knife fish, has the potential to replace current energy inefficient underwater propulsion systems. This paper quantizes the efficiency of a fin mechanism based on its ability to incorporate a large number of undulations. Characteristic ellipses of a mechanism were defined, based on which two algorithms were defined to measure the capabilities of the mechanism. The available workspace of the mechanism was optimized to accommodate the undulation requirements of the robot based on the formulations. Further, the distortion effect on the waveform was identified and the optimization was redefined to obviate its possibility while in operation.

Opis:
In this paper, we analyze the competitive and innovative trajectories followed by the canned fish industry in recent times. We base our study on four case studies from the Galician industry in Spain, which comprises the largest share of the European canned fish sector. At least four different innovation patterns are found in the industry. The first pattern is a conservative one where innovation is seen as a risk and therefore maintaining current routines is the chosen option. The second pattern has been defined as “large retailer-dominated” and is followed by companies that have signed exclusive agreements with large retailers, which increasingly determine most of their innovation activities. The third strategy we have defined as “territory-orientated,” since product innovation and incorporation of quality distinctions based on the territory are the main innovation drivers. Finally, we have an “ecological or nature-orientated” innovation strategy where meeting ecological normative requirements is the main innovation driver.

Opis:
Fish meat is a valuable dietary component owing its exceptionally high nutritional value, as it contains high quality protein, fat (including n-3 acids) and a variety of vitamins and minerals. The aim of this study was to determine the content of ash and minerals (macro- and microelements) in three freshwater fish species, and quantitative changes in smoked and marinated products. The research material originated from three species, i.e. common carp (Cyprinus carpio), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykkis) and northern pike (Esox lucius). The following parameters were determined in samples of raw as well as processed fish meat: ash (using the gravimetric method, according to PN-ISO 936:2000) and the minerals Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu (using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry ICP-OES). The statistical analysis of the results did not show significant differences in the ash content in meat of the three fish species. The ash content in processed fish meat differed significantly from that in raw fish, thus indicating changes in concentrations of the minerals. The differences depended on the applied processing technology. As for the mineral content, the examined fish species achieved high nutritional quality, with the highest content of magnesium, iron and zinc in common carp, potassium and phosphorus in rainbow trout and calcium in pike. The levels of the minerals in processed fish meat differed significantly from those in the raw material, especially in carp products (higher amounts of almost all the determined elements). Smoking as well as marinating resulted in a considerable increase in the sodium contet, and the highest values were obtained for marinated rainbow trout. Monitoring the content of macro- and microelements in fish meat is important for the consumer.
