Opis:
Bilayer sandwich structures were fabricated by the sequential thermal evaporation of gold, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), C$\text{}_{60}$ and gold onto sapphire substrates. When the current-voltage characteristics of a freshly made device are measured in an atmosphere of argon, fairly strong rectification is observed. When the bilayer device is exposed to ammonia vapor, the rectification slowly decreases and almost disappears. If the device is then placed under vacuum and the ammonia removed, the initial conditions slowly return. We attribute the rectification to the formation of a p-n junction.

Opis:
The effects of atomic hydrogen irradiation on the optical properties of (InGa)(AsN) single quantum wells investigated by means of photoluminescence spectroscopy. For increasing hydrogen dose, the photoluminescence band peak energy of each nitrogen-containing sample blue-shifts and for high hydrogen dose it reaches that of a corresponding nitrogen-free reference sample. This effect is accompanied by a broadening of the photoluminescence band line width and by a decrease in the photoluminescence efficiency. Thermal annealing at 550ºC fully restores the original band gap value and the photoluminescence line width of the sample before hydrogenation. An interpretation of these phenomena is proposed in terms of an H perturbation of the charge distribution around the strongly electronegative N atoms, leading most likely to the formation of H-N complexes, and to an ensuing electronic passivation of nitrogen.

Opis:
Avoidance of collisions is one of the most important tasks for the officer of the watch on a ship’s bridge. Measures and actions required to avoid such accidents are described in the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1972 and still valid, with several minor amendments, since then. On the basis of a proper look-out at all times, by sight and hearing, and the use of all available means, also including technical equipment installed on-board as well as information provided by a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), the navigating officer collects traffic and environmental data and combines them with their own ship data to construct a mental traffic image for the assessment of risk of collision with other objects in the vicinity. In the case wherre there is an unacceptable risk she or he has to decide on taking action. In most of the cases decision making is appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and ships maneuver and pass at a safe distance. Only in very rare cases, due to whatever reasons, watch officers fail in taking appropriate actions in good time. It is assumed that, if effective alerting algorithms would be available, a substantial number of collisions at sea, and especially in coastal waters, can be avoided by making the watch officer aware that the ‘last line of defence’ for taking action is close to come. It is assumed that there is potential in applying the principle of the resolution advisory alert of an ACAS (Airborne Collision Avoidance System)/TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System) in aviation and adapt it to the needs of maritime traffic. In this paper, the authors introduce a method for triggering collision warnings by focusing specifically on the critical last phase of an encounter and taking into account the maneuvering characteristics of the navigating ship. They comprehensively explore the application using scenario studies discussing the operational aspects of varying implementation states (one ship only, SOLAS ships only).

Opis:
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), through its Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC), has been carrying out substantive work on the reduction and limitation of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping since 1997, following the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol and the 1997 MARPOL Conference. While to date no mandatory GHG instrument for international shipping has been adopted, IMO has given significant consideration of the matter and has been working in accordance with an ambitious work plan with a view to adopting a package of technical provisions. Beside the efforts undertaken by IMO, it is assumed that e.g. optimized manoeuvring regimes have potential to contribute to a reduction of GHG emissions. Such procedures and supporting technologies can decrease the negative effects to the environment and also may reduce fuel consumption. However, related training has to be developed and to be integrated into existing course schemes accordingly. IMO intends to develop a Model Course aiming at promoting the energy‐efficient operation of ships. This Course will contribute to the IMO’s environmental protection goals as set out in resolutions A.947(23) and A.998(25) by promulgating industry “best practices”, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the negative impact of global shipping on climate change. In this paper the outline of the research work will be introduced and the fundamental ideas and concepts are described. A concept for the overall structure and the development of suggested detailed content of the draft Model course will be exemplarily explained. Also, a developed draft module for the model course with samples of the suggested integrated practical exercises will be introduced and discussed. The materials and data in this publication have been obtained partly through capacity building research project of IAMU kindly supported by the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) and The Nippon Foundation in Japan.

Opis:
Rapidly increasing numbers of ships and ship sizes pose an ever-growing challenge to the maritime industry. Although statistics indicate improved levels of safety in the industry which carries 90% of the world’s trade, the risk of navigational accidents, among other issues, remains a prime concern and priority (EMSA, 2010; 2014). In order to address these concerns, the authors turned to another high-risk industry for inspiration. Specifically, they turned to the aviation industry, which has often been used as a source of comparisons and ideas by researchers in the maritime domain. Keeping up with the trend, the authors of this paper turn to a tried-and-tested system used widely in modern aviation: the Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS). The prime idea behind ACAS is to construct two virtual 3D zones around an aircraft. These zones are dynamic, and depend on the manoeuvring characteristics of a given aircraft. If the system detects an “intruder” (another aircraft) in either of the two well-defined virtual zones, it provides warnings and/or instructions to pilots of both aircraft to take certain precautionary or emergency measures. In the current paper, the authors explore whether or not such a system is feasible for use in the maritime domain and, if so, how. The paper provides a detailed analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks of using an ACAS-like system onboard vessels. It also discusses possible means of implementation and integration with current equipment, and explores how the introduction of e-navigation may impact the proposed solution.

Current maritime transportation and shipping is characterized by rapid technological developments effecting the basic concepts of operating ships and even changing traditional paradigms of controlling ships. The e-Navigation concept of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) specifically aims at more comprehensive and reliable support of the human operators on-board and ashore. However, autonomous unmanned ships remote controlled or even autonomously navigating are expected to come soon. In this paper, selected operational aspects of maritime traffic merging conventional and unmanned remote controlled ships in coastal areas are discussed. Furthermore, some preliminary results of experimental simulation studies into a future scenario of maritime traffic are presented and preliminary conclusions in respect to job profiling and training requirements are discussed.

Innovation is a crucial factor of value creation for these organizations and their stakeholders who depend on efficient and effective sustainable competitive advantages within the specified time. The modern market, extremely turbulent and often unpredictable, creates unlimited opportunities for entrepreneurs while directing business activities in various activities whose attractiveness is determined by a number of variables. The management of innovation is particularly important in a situation of increasingly globalizing world economy and the strengthening of the positions of individual countries on the international arena. This is manifested by the companies searching the relevant partners and others co-operators from various geographical areas of the globe, which is reflected in the concept of the so-called. innovation networks, enabling efficient generation of open innovation on the environment and its needs. It is a fundamental premise of design "platform for knowledge and technology transfer", which transfers the knowledge, experience and resources of individual partners (business and business-related), to deliberate, responsible, or consistent with the trends, the emergence of new market. The dynamics of the activity of modern organizations, for the design and implementation of innovative solutions in innovative processes, determine first of all the changes and transformations taking place in their environment. Therefore, it is appropriate from the point of view of an innovative organization to be able to face new challenges and demands of the contemporary realities of the market - so to them, preferably in advance to prepare to be able to be influenced in their desired direction. It is worth to admit that the key strategic directions of activities of intelligent organization, open to innovations include: 1. Continuous monitoring of calculated and architecture changes in the environment, looking for the optimal place for themselves, 2. Empathic orientation to the customer and its needs, to involve it in the design and implementation of business processes, 3. The quest for the rational use of resources, 4. Willingness to share knowledge, expertise, resources and other entities involved in the creative process / reconstructive, 5. The flexible reorganization of business structures on emerging unexpectedly opportunities and market opportunities, 6. Development of pro-innovative attitudes of workers towards conscious business risk management, 7. Management of innovative activity in a socially responsible manner. It is expected that in the face of growing turbulence of the market environment of modern organizations the efficient and time effective innovation management becomes a common phenomenon inscribed in the philosophy of their actions. In conclusion, the authors of the Monograph want to point out that increased, in most markets of the world, the competitiveness of the organization should be a challenge for today and tomorrow but for the decision makers of innovative companies primarily in the following areas: 1. Determination of clear and at the same time realistic strategic objectives, tactical and operational for creating innovation. 2. Generate and application of modern models of business processes, based on current data, information and knowledge, experience and creative abilities, 3. Create a network of cooperation with other stakeholders, primarily from prosumers innovation 4. Essays optimal for the type of business represented, paths, methods and ways of its development, which is not so much a reaction ex post, but mainly ex ante to market signals, 5. Smooth innovation management in the different phases of design, development and commercialization of the market, 6. Constructing appropriate systems of motivation of employees, on the one hand, and on the other to create structures that allow them to share knowledge, to increase the chances of success of the organization represented, 7. Elaborating an effective ways to promote innovation in the market, including modern tools and instruments relevant to the specific characteristics and the nature of the environment to which they are addressed, 8. Engaging processes of development of the industry or sector of the economy not only represented a territorial unit, but taking into account the impact of the global market, 9. Regular monitoring of changes in both the proximal and distal environment and 10. Adequate to the resources, strengths and opportunities shaping the architecture of business processes with a view to current and future generations – in such a way as to have a sense of well-invested capital, invested resources and time involved. The above statement can be considered as a kind of Decalogue for all those entrepreneurs who are currently engaged in the innovative processes or wish to pursue them in the future. Efficient implementation of activities in this area will certainly favour the orientation of the business focused on creating value for customers and organizations with them. The Authors hope that the content of presented publication will provoke Readers to make a considerations to conduct numerous academic discussions, as well as contribute to the formation of pro-innovation attitudes and behaviours of entrepreneurs, creating a new architecture of their businesses models and target markets. Cooperation between science and business environment for efficient innovation is a requirement, and also the need for existing times. Future generations will verify certainly fast enough efficiency currently being undertaken in this field of activities.

Relacje i powiązania występujące pomiędzy interesariuszami danego środowiska przestrzennego pozwalają im wyznaczać i realizować optymalne, z punktu widzenia potrzeb regionu, kierunki jego aktualnych i potencjalnych zmian, wykorzystując system reprezentowanych wartości i posiadanych zdolności twórczych – inteligentnych specjalizacji.
This paper addresses the issues of creating system products based on the implementation of the concept of smart specialisations (in regional approach). The key to a region’s success lies, e.g. in its potential for innovation which is an important factor in building the brand architecture of every market area. In this perspective, an essential role is played by public administration bodies – entities that support, e.g. business in the region, the entrepreneurs themselves and the enterprises they represent, research and development institutions, and cooperation between these entities and system products beneficiaries – their end users. The relationships and links that develop between the stakeholders within the given spatial environment (e.g. regional) allow them to set and follow optimal – from the point of view of the needs of the region – directions of its current and potential transformations utilising the system of shared values and creative abilities – smart specialisations.

Since the mid 1990's, an increasing number of charged particle microbeams have been designed to deliver a preset number of ions to individual living cells with the micron resolution. These tools provide a powerful technique to investigate the cellular response to low doses of radiations. During the last years, the single ion hit facility in operation on the GSI microbeam since 1987 has been upgraded for the irradiation of individual living cells in vitro. This setup presents two main peculiarities compared to the microbeams used up to now for cell irradiation. First, the beam's micrometric size is obtained by magnetic focusing and not by a simple collimation. This allows obtaining a smaller beam spot, a better defined linear energy transfer, and a high irradiation throughput. Then, the GSI microbeam is able to focus ions from carbon to uranium with energies between 1.4 MeV/u to 11.4 MeV/u. The range of accessible linear energy transfer is thus considerably extended compared to light ions microbeam in operation today. The design of the GSI microbeam is described, including the beam control, the online cell localisation, the cell dish designed specifically for microbeam irradiation, and the cell irradiation procedures. Experimental tests performed to check the global aiming accuracy as well as the first cellular irradiations are presented.
