Opis:
Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe is saturated with the hero's deep religiousness. Faith is the foundation on which he builds his life, and God is the one who gives a meaning and an aim to the experience of loneliness. The whole novel is characterized by a wealth of religious motifs. Here are the most important ones: daily reading of the Holy Scriptures and prayer, moral self-analysis. After each activity the protagonist thinks about how the Providence's intentions have been revealed in his action. Each experience is for him either a result of a committed sin (leaving his parents) or an act of Divine Providence. Religion pervades all the aspects of the hero's life. He builds a church, he erects a cross, he celebrates Sundays and Christmas. Religious practices become a source of strength and consolation for him, and also a valuable support at the moments of doubt. The hero's friendship with Friday is an important part of his life. He tries to teach him the basic truth of faith; he tells him about God's love of people, about the mystery of Redemption and about the role of the Holy Spirit in a man's life. Considering the above mentioned religious acts contained in Daniel Defoe's novel it can be stated that the novel is very valuable as a pedagogical book. Robinson Crusoe is still an important book, especially for young people looking for personal models and authorities.

Muriel Spark, natural and supernatural in literature, religion in literature, Catholic novel, English short stories
Opis:
A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fiction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is manifested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fiction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fiction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fiction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fiction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience.

Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną
Opis:
In the theoretical part of the article the author discusses the notion of cultural equivalency from the perspective of the polysystem theory, proposed by Gideon Toury, Jose Lambert and Itamar Even¬ Zohar. The theory assumes that literature is a formal dynamic functional system, and that the translation of a literary work of art rejects the requirement of adequacy for the sake of acceptability. The point of departure for the analytical part of the text is the concept of adaptation as translation, which refers to the polysystem theory and has been developed by Patrick Cattrysse and Alicja Helman. The analysis of the English version of the novel, written by Dorota Masłowska and titled Snow White and Russian Red (Polish: Wojna polsko¬ ruska pod flagą biało¬ czerwoną), shows the scale of difficulty which the translator, Benjamin Paloff, experi-enced in order to generate the target text “rooted” in the target culture. In case of subtitles the equivalency is even more difficult to achieve, mainly because of the problem of reduc-tion of the original dialogue to a couple of lines printed on the bottom of the shot. The author of the article shows what type of equivalences both – the translator of the novel into English, and the author of subtitles selected in order to achieve the goal.

Opis:
The article deals with a particular case of intra- and intertextual translation of a highly pragmatic nature, which can be seen in Puppet. A Chicano novella by Margarita Cota-Cárdenas. Composed mainly of fragments of conversations, monologues and personal letters, the novel reflects Spanish-English codeswitching, as a characteristic feature of the speech of the Mexican American community in the USA. By (re)producing a range of heteroglossal forms of this community communication, Cota-Cárdenas uses translation procedures to reach the hybrid reader who is, at the same time, the hallmark of Chicanos. The multilingual strategies (Hansen Esplin, 2012) of the author and the translators, Barbara D. Riess and Tino Sandoval, become the main pragmatic objective of the novel, both in its source and target versions. Given the multitude of translation procedures observed in both versions of this hybrid novel, the relativity of traditional translation terms, such as original and translation, is also discussed, as both turn out to be bilingual texts and pragmatic translations.

Opis:
Grant Morrison’s work has greatly added to the Scottish graphic novel tradition. In this regard, this paper will look at the recent Polish translation of the 25th anniversary edition of one of his iconic and groundbreaking Batman graphic novels, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. A brief description and publishing history of the graphic novel will be provided, followed by an analysis of the quality, style and publishing history of the translation in order to produce a final commentary on how Morrison’s work has been rendered into the Polish language. It is concluded the translation is largely faithful to its original although it is marred with a number of careless and confusing errors which ultimately have an impact on the reading experience.

The paper is a comparison of three translations of Tadeusz Konwicki’s novel Bohiń. After an overall evaluation of the specific characteristics of the Polish language spoken in the Vilnius area, the author focuses on its lexical aspects and in particular on words reflecting the complex social, political, and cultural reality of the northern Kresy. The analysis of the strategies adopted to render the novel’s realities, conducted on the basis of a classification of realia proposed by Krzysztof Hejwowski, enables the author to indicate how some of these words play an important role in the creation of Tadeusz Konwicki’s fictional and mythical universe.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to shed light on the history of the Polish novel for children with the highest number of English translations. It is an attempt to explain, with selected examples which have not been discussed so far, how Korczak’s translatorshave dealt with the text of Król Maciuś Pierwszy [King Matt the First], using different translation strategies. The analysed material deserves attention not only because it has so far remained terra incognita of Polish translation studies, but also because each of the translators has accentuated different layers of meaning of the original, modifying it in terms of style, linguistic organization and cultural references.

Jane Austen

Opis:
Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when Classicism had came to an end and Romanticism had just started, Jane Austen wrote her famous, fabulous and funny novels. All of them are known as sentimental novels. On the other hand, they are not only romances, but also detailed description of English society in the nineteenth century. According to Burgess, influenced the Age of Reason (Burgess 2003: 173). What is more, it is said that the nineteenth century novels replaced romances easily because they still had the general structure of the romances. Like in a romance, Austen connected the main plot with love affairs. In accordance with the statement of Burgess, her books mixed romantic and classical features (Burgess 2003: 174). This style of writing gave her the popularity of a unique writer who tried to present some a part of the English society, especially the issues connected with women`s life. Mostly she skipped political and historical events and focused on people and their everyday life and love affairs. Human dilemmas were the priority for her. Another important issue was a depiction of the character`s lives in novels. Austen mostly used comical and funny dialogs, tricky plots, and happy endings.
