The author attempts to demonstrate the validity of the sacrifice that Edith Stein made of herself, and analyzes the deed by thoughts of Józef Tischner and Emmanuel Levinas, f rom the point of view of phenomenology. The connecting element is the biography of Edith Stein and many analogies from Bible. The main point of the present article is the assumption that the victim Edith Stein was the most important idea of her life.

Niniejszy esej analizuje trzy fazy rozwoju religijnego Edith Stein w kontekście debaty toczonej w latach 20. i 30. XX wieku na temat relacji pomiędzy religią a filozofią. Debata ta koncentrowała się na kwestii, czy filozofię chrześcijańską należy uznać za oksymoron. Stein, po przejściu na rzymski katolicyzm w 1922 roku, określiła się jako filozofka chrześcijańska. Uważała, że chrześcijaństwo i filozofia nie są dla siebie wzajemnie antagonistami, a partnerami w poszukiwaniu podstawowych prawd o życiu i śmierci. Trzy przemiany duchowe Stein, które esej ten bada pod względem historycznym i biograficznym, odnoszą się do jej decyzji o zastosowaniu fenomenologicznych metod i spostrzeżeń filozoficznych do sfery religii, przeniesienia zainteresowania filozofki na perspektywę chrześcijańską i wreszcie wyboru katolicyzmu jako systemu wiary.

The term feminine genius denotes a special intuition and sensitivity of a woman that helps her not only ascertain the needs of others but also empathize with the human condition in a way characteristic only of women. The article attempts to answer questions concerning the feminine genius, such as the following: What is spiritual motherhood? What is spiritual companionship? How can women express the qualities of companionship and motherhood in and out of their homes? What kind of obstacles do women need to root out of their hearts to build loving relationships? And, How does emotional formation prepare women for their vocation? The answers are sought from Edith Stein’s perspective, i.e. by drawing from the usage of phenomenology and Thomism adopted in her book, Essays on Women.

The article deals with the representation of Edith Stein in contemporary German historical culture. Being complex, Edith Stein’s biography is demanding to describe. Finding a narrative, which would embrace her whole live in a comprehensible way, is therefore a formidable task. The analysis of her representation in German historical culture has revealed that different groups in the German society use certain images of Stein for their own purpose. They choose a convenient part of her life that best supports the purposes of their specific project, be it a school, clinic, church, et cetera. Thus Edith Stein becomes a quarry in which everybody can find what they need to find.

The author of the article studies the spirituality of Edith Stein. He presents Edith Stein’s contribution to the methodology of spiritual theology, her anthropological and theological vision, her evolution of the religious experience, the life of prayer and call to mysticism. Edith Stein carried out research which today would be regarded as being interdisciplinary. Her reflections have a huge influence on the methodology of the theology of spirituality. The spirituality of the Cross which Stein writes about in compliance with the classic masters, nowadays may be an adjustment to the incarnational spirituality, in her overly optimistic view on the usage of creatures and taking for granted the spiritual value of suffering.

The article shows the processes of reception of the person of Edith Stein in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. According to the author, this reception could be divided into materials and processes. The first group includes impressions, opinions and interpretations. The second is formed, for instance, by beatification and canonisation documents. The author refers to Walter Benjamin and Hans-George Gadamer showing the dialogical elements of the reception process. Germany became the place where the reception of Edith Stein was the strongest due to its historical situation and the context of the ‘hearing’ of National Socialism as well as the role of the Catholic Church in the Third Reich. An alternative way of reception of Stein is exemplified by the Dutch town of Echt, which offered Edith Stein a few years of relative peace. Biographers have therefore tended to treat it one-sidedly as the first station of her last journey. Poland and the ways of reception of St. Edith Stein in the Polish reality since the 1950s occupy a special place in the paper.

The author begins with noticing an apparent absence of the problem of faith in the twentieth-century philosophy and its surprising return at the end of this century, notably in Gianni Vattimo’s and Julia Kristeva’s works. By creating a kind of dialogue between Stein’s phenomenology and Kristeva’s psychoanalysis, the author analyses the concept of faith from those two apparently distinct perspectives. In the discussion of Stein’s attitude recalledare her personal experiences as a philosopher along with her claims on faith as a foundation of knowledge of God, supplied by love and acting. From Kristeva’s point of view, far from the former one, the need of faith is a result of specific ‘going beyond oneself’ that is necessary in a process of forming one’s personal identity. While Stein believes in God, Kristeva believes in man.

In this article the author discusses the problem of faith understood as one’s own choice. Two turning points in Edith Stein’s life that determined her fate are shown: her early atheism and her return into faith. The second part of the text is devoted to Stein’s very essential claim: ‘This is true! ‘, which, in the author’s opinion, has a historical, epistemological as well as metaphysical-religious dimension. In his discussion of the epistemological dimension, the author recalls Descartes’ theory of will, while in his explorations of the metaphysical-religious dimension, he separates the metaphysical (where Stein is juxtaposed with Roman Ingarden) and religious (acknowledgement that Jesus is a Personal Truth) elements. The last part of the text depicts Stein’s divergence from Husserl’s phenomenological reduction, as well as from concepts of absolutely Origin ‘I’, and assigning to God the main role in every activity of the ‘I’. The path that Stein passed – in a matter of understanding of human being – could be described as a path from Husserl to Saint Augustine.

Starting from Ernst Tugendhat’s discrimination of the ‘dogmatic’ and the‘critical’ motive of Husserl’s epistemology, the author argues that the former leads to anatomistic, analytic theory of ‘pure consciousness’, while the latter needs to be developedby holistic approach, in which the cognitive justification – as Ernest Sosa put it – derivesultimately not from direct obviousness or plausibility alone but from maximum coherencewith all relevant considerations, including all relevant intuitively plausible data. Inthe centre of Edith Stein’s philosophy lies an elaborate theory of sense showing a hierarchicalorder of beings. This seems to involve just the ‘critical’ attitude. Edith Stein and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, were both twentieth century ‘martyrs,’ who experienced personal loss and suffering. However, it was suffering for others, deliberately chosen and consciously endured, that was of theological significance for both of them. This paper seeks to demonstrate that for Stein and Bonhoeffer suffering was understood by them as providing an essential example or model of Christian discipleship and that both utilised the expression Stellvertretung—vicarious suffering—to describe this. This theological interpretation of suffering for others illustrates a fundamental ecclesial reality which is of ecumenical significance because of its Christological significance, which is why such suffering transcends confessional and denominational differences and is of paradigmatic significance. Furthermore, this paper will suggest that both Stein and Bonhoeffer understood that the Christian disciple, in vicarious suffering, becomes a Schuldübernahme: a bearer of the sins of others.

Poszukując drogi do Prawdy, którą okazał się ostatecznie sam Bóg, Edyta Stein połączyła ze sobą dwa kierunki myślenia: fenomenologię oraz tomizm. Pierwszy z nich był dla niej metodą oglądu rzeczywistości, dzięki której przy spełnieniu określonych metodologicznych kroków możliwe było ujęcie istoty rzeczy. Drugi z kolei był źródłem wielorakich idei, zarówno z zakresu epistemologii, ontologii, jak również filozofii człowieka czy teologii, które to E. Stein częściowo przejęła oraz na swój własny, oryginalny sposób rozwinęła. Porównując analizy prawdy autorstwa św. Tomasza, za- mieszczone w dwóch pierwszych kwestiach De veritate z rozważaniami Stein na ten sam temat zawartymi w Bycie skończonym a bycie wiecznym, autorka szkicuje sposób, w jaki filozof oraz święta uzgodniła ze sobą oba kierunki, omawiając jednocześnie przyczyny oraz skutki takiego zabiegu.
On her intellectual journey to the truth, which she after all defined as God himself, Edith Stein had managed to combine two philosophical approaches such as phenomenology and thomism. Former approach was considered by her as a method of describing the reality, which after fulfilling certain steps of methodology, could allow one to reveal the essence of things. The latter one, was perceived by her as a wide and versatile source of ideas obtained not only from epistemology and ontology, but also human philosophy and theology. These ideas were adopted by Stein and developed by her own sophisticated implications. By comparing Thomas Aquinas’ analysis on understanding the truths, contained in the first two parts of Disputed Questions on Truth (Questiones Dispu- tatae de veritate), with her reflections on the same aspect included in Finite and Eternal Being: An Attempt to an Ascent to the Meaning of Being, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross discloses her explanation of synthesising these two philosophical schools, with her reasons and consequences of doing so.

This article, written from the legal and constitutional perspective, seeks to explore John Paul II’s reasons that made him announce Edith Stein the co-patroness of Europe. The author begins with recalling prior patrons of Europe that is Saint Benedict and Saint Cyril and Methodius, and juxtaposes it with further pope’s decision to add three saint women to them. It is also an occasion to discuss questions like: woman rights and request for their greater participation in the public sphere, the concept of ‘new feminism’, national and religious issues, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, Judeo-Christian roots of the Europe, human rights and ‘civilisation of death’ – all related with Edith Stein. The last part of the article is devoted to the reflection on law: the natural and the so-called ‘good law’, as well as its establishment.

Edith Stein’s ideas about an experience of death are reconstructed by using the parallel method, i.e. in comparison with the ideas of K. Jaspers, P. Ricoeur and U. Eco. The adoption of this method allows one to explore Edith Stein’s both philosophical and existential radicalism or to systematize philosophers’ convictions concerning a limit-experience, i.e. death. The experience of the Mystery of the Cross, which is equivalent to the experience of death, appears in E. Stein’s texts as the philosophers’ stone related to human experience. However, the verbalization of this experience as the “science of the Cross” and a “holy science” is at the same time the highest form of human knowledge.

Opis:

The complex theological treatment of the person as imago Dei has focused on ontological, functional, relational or eschatological interpretations, which either belong or possibly belong to all human beings. It is however unusual to encounter a reflection on the person’s intrinsic uniqueness as imago Dei. For Edith Stein intrinsic or a priori individuality refers to a unique quality of the person’s soul which unfolds more or less fully in the unity of the person’s body-soul-spirit unity: «the soul is destined for eternal being, and this destination explains why the soul is called upon to be an image of God in a “wholly personal manner.”» (FEB 504 [422]) This ontological approach contributes to a consideration of interpersonal enrichment through love, as a way to personal fulfilment and to complementarity through communion. An ontological approach to personal individuality thus paradoxically leads to the discovery of the existential primacy of relationality.

This article discusses the rich relation between Judaism and Christianity, one of the issues addressed by Stein in her intellectual explorations, as well as a matter pivotal in her life. By referring to Stein’s texts, her letters and other documents, as well as a claim made by commentators of her work and life, the author tries to expose numerous falsities and myths that arouse about Stein’s life. Beginning with an overview of Judaic tradition in which Stein grew up, the author then depicts the socio-political situation of Breslau as well as Stein’s family history. Next, C. Rastoin emphasises the moment when Stein recognised the power of Cross and joined the Catholic Church, yet at the same time did not cease to love the Jewish nation or feel a member of it. The last part of the text outlines Israel’s theology as well as a request for Judeo-Christian reconciliation and reciprocal respect.

Is Edith Stein a symbol of reconciliation between Jews and Catholics or just the opposite – a major stumbling block? This question was asked by Susanne Batzdorff, Edith Stein’s niece, in her memories. It should be repeated today if we try to approach seriously the theme of Catholic-Jewish dialogue. For many Catholics, it is not easy to understand the Jewish point of view regarding the canonization of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Therefore the aim of this article was to present this perspective and its justification, the understanding of which seems to be a precondition of a real dialogue, the dialogue where both sides are given the same right to express their thoughts, claims and reservations. The relatives of Edith Stein and Jewish commentators on her life and death underline that they have lost Edith Stein twice: first, when she made her conversion to Catholicism and, second, after her death, when she became a symbol of Christian martyrdom, the fact which finally led to her canonisation in 1998. In their eyes, Edith Stein had nfaced discrimination during her professional career and died in the gas chamber as a Jew. She was refused tenure at German universities as a Jew and as a woman. Obviously, as a Catholic nun, Edith Stein herself had the right to read these facts as an evidence of apre-existing God’s plan: all her personal failures were meant to lead to a final and essentialvictory made possible by her conversion. But the Jewish perspective, for obviousreasons, is different: the Jewish community lost one of its members in a period when integration seemed natural in the face of the Nazi threat. The second loss of Edith Steinwas a symbolic one: canonisation made her one of Catholic saints – despite the fact thatshe died as a Jew along with millions of other victims of the Shoah. Was her death a partof God’s project to convoke her to sanctity? Should we understand that the Holocaustwas also part of the same plan.The second loss, in fact, is connected with the symbolic appropriation of theHolocaust by the Catholic Church by underlying the Christian martyrdom evidenced bythe death of Edith Stein. In view of the fact that she died together with six millions otherJews, the question arises why her martyrdom led only her to sanctity and not any otherJews? Was her conversion a reason why she was such rewarded? For Jews, it is bothtragic and paradoxical that Edith Stein converted to Catholicism which for centuries hasblamed Jews for killing Jesus Christ and has instigated anti-Semitism. The latter finallyled to Hitler’s plan of the final solution. Even today, among Catholics, a claim can be heard that conversion to Christianity is a logical step, natural consequence, and kind ofcompensation once a Jew admits that it was a historical mistake not to recognise Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Therefore it would be natural to honour Edith Stein for her decision to convert. In conclusion, the author of the article states once more that without understanding the Jewish perspective on life and death of Edith Stein neither a dialogue or reconciliation is possible between Jews and Catholics.

In this article discussed is the phenomenon of icon sui generis and a phenomenon of Edith Stein as anicon. Stein’s philosophy of Light is inscribed into a philosophical lineage of the icon, especially platonic and neoplatonic, what leads to creating an idea of iconic cognition – its foundation is a connection between trace and reflection revealed in an icon which is both a representation and a presence of God. By referring to Stein’s late philosophy as well as her biography the author describes a merge between those two domains which leads to an absolute, iconic cognition and therefore allows presenting Stein as an iconic figure, which power reveals itself in her supernatural emanation. This emanation as well as a symbiosis between cognition and existence creates an essence of Edith Stein’s phenomenon.

Edith Stein was born in a traditional religious Jewish family. In her youth, she stopped praying and lost her faith in God. She was, however, very faithful in searching for the truth, which had become her life's passion. First, the article presents various definitions of truth. Then it deals with phenomenological methods of discovering the truth about man, which were characteristic of Edith Stein. Finally, it shows her discovery of the God of Love, who pulled her towards mystical union in the spirituality of Carmel. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz experiencing the mystery of the Cross of Christ and sacrificing herself for her nation.

This article proposes the thesis that Edith Stein’s late anthropology has a theocentric orientation. The threefold structure of a human being consisting of a body, soul and spirit is examined in order to validate the thesis. First of all, the finitude of a human being points out to the eternal being and – consequently – human beings are not conceivable by themselves, without the context of God. Moreover, the hylomorphic union of the body and soul adopted from Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy is enriched in Stein’s anthropology by the concept of spirit. This results in a threefold structure and is reason enough to suggest man’s iconic similarity to the Trinity. Furthermore, Stein takes over St. Teresa of Avila’s concept of an internal center of the soul, which can be a meeting point between a person and God. The analysis of the soul’s center supports the main thesis.

anusz Korczak’s ideas and practical pedagogical achievements permanently went down in the history of Polish and world pedagogy. They have become a unique source of knowledge, ideas and inspiration in the quest for new educational solutions. His rich literary works, especially the pedagogical trilogy entitled How to Love a Child, is both a source of knowledge and inspiration for further reflection and research in the field of pedagogic sciences and an encyclopaedia of practical knowledge in the area of care, upbringing and education. The purpose of this article is to depict Korczak as a person, tutor, guardian, researcher-clinician and show his moral credibility confirmed with testimony to love. Not only does it present the topicality and importance of his pedagogical message but it also indicates the possibility of being a role model for many of today’s tutors and teachers.

In modern times as never before, marriage and family are in danger. The contemporary problems were already present in many aspects in the times of Edith Stein. The author of the article studies the life and the works of the Saint with regard to marriage and family. For Edith Stein, marriage is an inseparable union of a man and woman, which, thanks to the sacramental grace, is filled with special strength to maintain reciprocal love and fidelity and also to cooperate with God in giving life and educating children. In Edith Stein’s opinion, both the husband and the wife in the family have rights and duties connected with being God’s image, bearing and bringing up children and transforming the world by their work. Edith, however, noted the difference between sexes and the way in which the tasks were realised according to the nature and the different callings. The Saint saw the necessity of complementarity of sexes and generations in a harmonious family. Such a vision of marriage and family is still applicable in our times.

The article seeks to explore the role of Edith Stein’s memory in creating the contemporary identity of the city of Wrocław. The author distinguishes between two forms of this memory, that is to say remembrance and symbolic places (lieux de mémoire). The places of remembrance of Edith Stein, who was born in Breslau, are connected with her biography and the time she spend in this city. The symbolic places of the memory of Edith Stein represent the values of her life (such as the European Peace Cross, meticulously analysed by the author). Both forms of memory variously transformed the space of the city in significant landscape.

In this article the author reconstructs and compares two concepts of man in thoughts of two great phenomenologists – Edith Stein and Roman Ingarden – connectedjoint not only by the intellectual bond but also by great friendship. The paper consists of two parts. First, the author presents Stein’s and Ingarden’s philosophy of man. Suchnotions as: subject, soul, spirit and body, experience, self-experience and activity of will, are shown from two perspectives. By analysing terminology used by both Stein and Ingardenin their works, the author tried to depict an appropriate – according to them –psychophysical constitution of man. While discussing Stein’s concepts, the author demonstratesalso her transition from phenomenology to mystical domain as well as her inspirationof Saint John of the Cross’ and Saint Theresa of Ávila’s works. Ingarden did notenter as firmly as Stein into the mystical domain, yet he opened a path into the Transcendenceby creating a concept of metaphysical qualities.

Edyta Stein – Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross – was fascinated by the “mystery of man”. Discovering this mystery led her to experience the “mystery of God”. She had a beautiful and difficult road leading through life and scientific transgressions, the path from thanatology to transthanatology, from the existence of a contingent existence to the existence of eternal Being. According to Edith Stein, the existence of man is unique. Everyone has to discover the fullness of his existence. Here comes Stein’s transition from psychological and philosophical considerations (phenomenon-fact) to theological considerations (foundation). By learning about God, man recognizes himself and discovers the ultimate truth of his existence. Whoever does not reach himself will not find God and enter eternal life. Or better: whoever does not find God will not find himself (no matter how much focus he will give on finding himself) and the source of eternal life that awaits him in his own interior.

What caused such a flattering assessment of Heidegger was primarily, but not exclusively, her reading of Being and Time. Artykuł odsłania tajemnicę Eucharystii, jaką zawierają pisma Edyty Stein. Dzieła świętej stanowiły bogaty materiał badawczy, ponieważ charakteryzują się głębią teologicznych, filozoficznych i psychologicznych rozważań. Artykuł wskazuje na źródła, na których Edyta Stein opierała się przy opracowywaniu zagadnienia Eucharystii. Następnie ukazuje, jak w swoich pismach ujmowała istotę mszy świętej. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wyłania się szczególnie ofiarniczy charakter sakramentu ołtarza. W ostatniej części artykuł przedstawia głębokie i jasno sformułowane myśli świętej dotyczące skutków Eucharystii, będące wynikiem jej osobistego doświadczenia.
The article looks at the way Edith Stein presents the mystery of the Eucharist in her works. Because ofthe deepness of hertheological, philosophical, and psychological thought, her writings proved to be a rich trove of material for research. The paper shows the original sources that Edith Stein used while working to understand the Eucharist.Nextit presentsthe way thatthe Saint understood the essence ofthe Mass. From the analysis emerges a particularily sacrificial character ofthe Sacrament ofthe Altar. In the last part, the article shows Edith Stein’s deep and clearly stated views on the effects of the Eucharist, that are based on her own personal experience.

Artykuł przedstawia zagadnienia związane z wychowaniem i kształceniem dziewcząt, jakie w swoich pismach podejmowała Edyta Stein. W tekście przedstawiono krótko niemiecką uczoną, wskazano na jej twórczość i działalność pedagogiczną, jak również ukazano podstawy jej myśli pedagogicznej. Dalej zaprezentowano cele i przebieg formacji dziewcząt, cechy autentycznej wychowawczyni, a także podjęto kwestię pracy zawodowej kobiet. Na koniec usiłowano ukazać potencjał i znaczenie rozważań Edyty Stein w kontekście dzisiejszych problemów związanych z edukowaniem i wychowywaniem dziewcząt.

This article is devoted to Edith Stein's background in Breslau. The basic sources are the texts of Edith Stein and Suzane Batzdorf, aided by the author’s own research on the life of the Jewish Community in Wrocławin the 19th and 20th century. The main issue addressed in the paper regards the extent to which Edith Stein’s life was influenced by the Jewish and German societies. Importantly, her education was not religious and her friends along with some family members were secularised. The identity of Breslau's Jews was complex; even though they were not multilingual, yet certainly multicultural, having been Jews and Germans at the same time. This variety was the keynote of Stein’s background. The question therefore should not be formulated as‘Jews or Germans?’ but rather how much Jewish and how much German they were? The answer is as complicated as their complex identity.

Opis:

Edith Stein – St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891–1942) undertook the issue of the family in the context of analysing a human person as a relational being. She compiled her experiences connected with the family she grew up in. She was aware of the threats awaiting the family connected with maintaining its unity and fulfilling its proper functions. Stein’s concept of the family is first of all community which is characterized by many interpersonal interactions and related values. She also perceived the family as the picture of the God’s image, which is indicated by biblical descriptions of the creation of the man, as well as by Augustinian concept of the Trinity. Man’s resemblance to God is expressed in complementarity of the woman and the man and their capacity for fruitful love. A married couple, being in the relation of a free gift of themselves and constituting the base of the family, can evolve in order to create educational environment for their offspring. Thus the family is the first and the most appropriate place to form a man as an integral mature person, comprising both physical, sensual and emotional sphere, together with moral, spiritual and religious one. The concept of the family and the way Edith Stein undertakes the issue of the family put her research into the current of integral personalism.
Edyta Stein – św. Teresa Benedykta od Krzyża (1891–1942) podejmowała problematykę rodziny w kontekście analizy osoby ludzkiej jako istoty relacyjnej. Opracowała także wspomnienia doświadczeń związanych z rodziną, w której się wychowała. Miała przy tym świadomość zagrożeń czyhających na rodzinę związanych z utrzymaniem jedności i spełnianiem jej właściwych funkcji. Rodzina w koncepcji Stein jest przede wszystkim wspólnotą charakteryzującą się licznymi interakcjami międzyludzkimi i bliskimi wartościami. Ponadto w rodzinie Filozofka dostrzega odwzorowanie obrazu Bożego, co wykazuje na podstawie biblijnych opisów stworzenia człowieka, jak i augustyńskiej koncepcji Trójcy Świętej. Ludzkie podobieństwo do Boga wyraża się w komplementarności kobiety i mężczyzny oraz uzdolnieniu do owocnej miłości. W relacji wolnego daru z siebie stanowiąca fundament rodziny para małżeńska może dojrzewać do tego, by stworzyć środowisko wychowawcze dla zrodzonego w związku potomstwa. Rodzina zatem jest pierwszym i najwłaściwszym miejscem formowania człowieka do integralnej dojrzałości osobowej, obejmującej zarówno sferę fizyczną, zmysłową, emocjonalną, uczuciową, moralną i religijną. Przedstawiona koncepcja rodziny i sposób podejmowania przez Edytę Stein kwestii związanych z rodziną wpisuje jej badania w nurt personalizmu integralnego.

In the 1930s, Edith Steinattends a phenomenological conference in Juvisy (where she meets Jacques Maritain), therebyentering the French intellectual world. Stein knows French: she is interested in the Carmel in France, including the Carmelites of Compiegne, whom remind her of the death of expiatory sacrifice. And yet the position of Stein and her ideas in the French humanistics is problematic. The current principle of secularism certainly constitutes a resistance to the adoption of Stein’s works in France. Moreover, for a long time Stein’s works were neither translated nor published and as consequence the French philosophical world for years could not read and confront her thoughts. The reception of her works has been recently changing. Perhaps Stein, being a Jew and a German woman, aids a multireligious, multicultural and secularised society.

In the spiritual texts contained in two volumes of Geistliche Texte I and II (ESGA, Vol. 19 and 20), St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) presents the personal experience of faith in God and God, which calls man to respond to the call to live with Him in the communion of persons. Stein tries to explain the essence of deep Christianity, which she considers not only as a cultural-traditional religion, but as a daily effort to work out the time to realize the principle of unum esse cum Deo, in accordance with the chosen way of life vocation and its implementation. The answer to God’s call is imperative, it flows from the inside of man and is not imposed on him externally.

This article has attempted to demonstrate the practical verification of the veritative argument in the life of Edith Stein and to indicate the possibility of taking advantage of her conclusions in the construction of the argument, especially in terms of strengthening its motivational merit. That argument serves to justify the credibility of the divine and Christian revelation by demonstrating that the source of all truth is God, who is also the ultimate truth that explains the meaning of human life and all that exists. Edith Stein, while looking for the truth and meaning of life, found God, the highest Truth. Through the encounter with God she discovered her destiny, a life spent in union with Him in eternity. Her path to the truth and God bears the marks of the process of reaching the ultimate truth, the God of revelation, and this process is included in the structure of the veritative argument. In this way, the experience of Edith Stein can be considered as a practical verifi cation of that argument. In addition, in her philosophical and theological inquiry, one can fi nd the mystery of God, personal truth, essential for the recognition of God as the ultimate truth, which is vital in understanding veritative argument. The truth of God in her approach has three dimensions: personal, relational, and explanatory. Such perceived truth serves for better understanding of the meaning of human life, especially in religious dimension, which is also crucial in veritative argument. Edith Stein showed in her anthropology that man nhas an innate predisposition to seek the truth, and her knowledge had a positive eff ect on the development of man and his life, which is signifi cant in investigating the sources of the argument. Stages in the process of searching the truth, distinguished by Edith Stein, (the attitude of intellectual openness to reality, good will in the quest to uncover the truth, determination and consistency in seeking, the attitude of „empathy”, humility opening up to the transcendent) converge with internal symptoms: dependency on eff ectiveness of the argument, or on its motivational value, enriching and expanding the argument. Similarly, external conditions which had a positive impact on the process (living environment and education, Husserl’s phenomenological method, testimony Christians’ life in faith) correspond to and reinforce the subject (objective) circumstances of the eff ectiveness of the argument.
W artykule podjęta została próba wykazania praktycznej weryfikacji argumentu werytatywnego w życiu Edyty Stein oraz wskazania na możliwość zastosowania jej przemyśleń w konstruowaniu tegoż argumentu, zwłaszcza w aspekcie wzmocnienia jego waloru motywacyjnego. Argument werytatywny służy uzasadnianiu wiarygodności Objawienia Bożego i chrześcijańskiego poprzez wykazywanie, że źródłem wszelkiej prawdy jest Bóg, który jest też ostateczną Prawdą wyjaśniającą sens życia człowieka i wszystkiego co istnieje. Edyta Stein szukając w swym życiu prawdy i sensu życia odnalazła Boga, najwyższą Prawdę. Przez spotkanie z Bogiem odkryła swe przeznaczenie, życie w zjednoczeniu z Nim w wieczności. Jej droga do prawdy i Boga nosi znamiona procesu dochodzenia do ostatecznej Prawdy, Boga Objawienia, a proces ten zawiera się w strukturze argumentu werytatywnego. W ten sposób doświadczenie Edyty Stein może być potraktowane jako praktyczne zweryfikowanie tegoż argumentu. Dodatkowo w jej myśli filozoficzno-teologicznej można odnaleźć dociekania tajemnicy Boga, osobowej Prawdy, istotne dla ujęcia Boga, jako ostatecznej Prawdy, a właśnie argument zmierza do wykazywania, że prawda zawiera się w Bogu Objawienia. Prawda w Bogu w jej ujęciu ma wymiar: osobowy, relacyjny i wyjaśniający. Tak postrzegana prawda służy pełniejszemu odkryciu sensu życia człowieka, przede wszystkim w wymiarze religijnym, co również przynależy do istoty argumentu. Edyta Stein wykazuje w swej antropologii, że człowiek ma wrodzone predyspozycje do poszukiwania prawdy, a jej poznanie wpływa pozytywnie na rozwój człowieka i jego życie. Te stwierdzenia są znaczące dla problematyki źródeł argumentu. Wyróżnione w myśli Edyty Stein uwarunkowania procesu dochodzenia do Prawdy i Boga (postawa otwartości intelektualnej względem zastanej rzeczywistości, dobra wola w dążeniu do odkrycia prawdy, determinacja i konsekwencja poszukującego, postawa „wczucia”, pokora otwierająca na rzeczywistość transcendentną) zbiegają się z wewnętrznymi, podmiotowymi uzależnieniami skuteczności czy waloru motywacyjnego argumentu i w jakimś stopniu je ubogacają oraz poszerzają. Podobnie uwarunkowania zewnętrzne, które wpłynęły pozytywnie na ten proces (środowisko życia i wychowanie, metoda fenomenologiczna Husserla, świadectwo życia wiarą spotykanych chrześcijan) korespondują i wzmacniają przedmiotowe (obiektywne) okoliczności skuteczności argumentu.

The origins of the term ‘empathy’ go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the foundation of analyses of the phenomenon were philosophical (phenomenological) deliberations on the issue of getting to know mental states of other people. The first psychologist to draw on achievements of phenomenologists and to use the term Die Einfühlung was Theodor Lipps (Lipps 1897). In the Anglo-Saxon literature the term was translated as ‘empathy’, sharing another person’s emotions. In our times, in pedagogy and psychotherapy, significant findings on empathy were made by Carl Rogers (1975), a personality psychologist. The article presents fragments of selected Edith Stein’s letters and statements that prove her interest in the issue of empathy both in her academic as well as personal life.

Powołanie jest przedmiotem badań wielu dyscyplin naukowych – psychologii, teologii, filozofii czy socjologii – jednakże brakuje wciąż w tej dziedzinie opracowań pedagogicznych. Zwłaszcza dziś, kiedy to szumnie ogłasza się tzw. kryzys powołań, podając statystyki dotyczące mężczyzn wstępujących do seminariów duchownych i wspólnot zakonnych, kobiet w klasztorach, czy rozwodów. W obliczu tych problemów powinno stanąć do działania wychowanie, wychowanie służące rozeznawaniu powołania. Artykuł ten poświęcono pedagogicznym aspektom powołania w ujęciu Edyty Stein, Żydówki, doktora filozofii, karmelitanki bosej, świętej męczennicy. Jej twórczość naukowa dotycząca powołania, począwszy od powołania ogólnoludzkiego po zawodowe, jest nieocenionym źródłem wskazań wychowawczych i pedagogicznych. Szczególnie wiele miejsca Stein poświęciła powołaniu kobiety − towarzyszki mężczyzny, matki i oblubienicy, a także rozpoznaniu swoistości jej natury i zadań.
The abstract presents thought and life of Edith Stein about women’s vocation. The author is searching an answer for question about the essence of femininity and a special role of the woman in modern world. The paper is also analysis vocation as educational assignments and pedagogical bases of forming vocation in family.

This paper analizes in what way Teresa of Avila affected the life and thinking processes of Edith Stein. The author focused especially on a particular moment in Edith Stein’s life, when she discovered Teresa of Avila, to show how it influenced Edith’s spirituality. While reading the book by Teresa of Avila, Edith Stein found God, the Only Truth, and this experience helped her to open up to the whole new world inside her. Teresa of Avila become Edith’s guide, who would lead her along the paths of faith, teaching her the way of prayer and developing her personality. In her many writings, Edith Stein tried to present Saint Teresa of Jesus in such a way, as to make her more familiar. Her insightful analysis of Teresa’s works resulted in the in-depth philosophical and theological reflection of her thought. Another task of the article was to show how much alike elements there are in lifes of both women in an attempt to illustrate, that the similar life experiences influence in a similar fashion the processes taking place inside the human soul.

The article is an attempt at analyzing the descriptions of the relations between feelings, person and values that are presented in Edith Stein’s “On the problem of empathy”. Our aim is to show the correlations between person and values. To that end, it is essential to sketch Stein’s phenomenology of feelings. The article argues that some of the views proposed by Stein are problematic. In particular, it is pointed out that Stein’s analysis of the objective side of feeling and of the essence of values is inadequate. The central point of the critique concerns Stein’s view of the relations between “feeling a value” (Wertfühlen) and feelings (Gefühle). The notion of person and its phenomenological constitution is then discussed with reference to Stein’s dissertation, with a specific focus on its intersubjective dimension. It is argued that according to Stein one’s own emotional life is crucial to understanding other persons. The analysis of “On the problem of empathy” is deepened through illustrations of some changes in the way of treating axiological problems in Stein’s phenomenology.
W niniejszym artykule podejmuje się próbę przeanalizowania zaprezentowanych przez Edytę Stein w O zagadnieniu wczucia opisów relacji między uczuciami, osobą oraz wartościami. Pokaże się przede wszystkim, na czym polega postulowana przez Stein korelacja między osobą a wartościami. Istotne dla tego celu będzie zarysowanie Stein fenomenologii uczucia. W artykule wskazuje się na problematyczność niektórych ujęć proponowanych przez autorkę. Zwraca się uwagę przede wszystkim na niedostateczność analizy przedmiotowej strony uczuć oraz istoty wartości. Centralnym punktem krytyki jest jednak pogląd Stein, traktujący czucie wartości oraz uczucia jako dwa kierunki jednego przeżycia. Pokazuje się, czym w ujęciu autorki jest osoba oraz w jaki sposób dochodzi do jej fenomenologicznej konstytucji. Stawia się również omawiane zagadnienia w kontekście intersubiektywności. Argumentuje się, że według Stein własne życie emocjonalne człowieka posiada istotne znaczenie dla rozumienia innych osób. Analizę O zagadnieniu wczucia pogłębia się przez wskazanie na pewne zmiany w ujęciu zagadnień aksjologicznych w późniejszych rozprawach Stein.

Each of these authors begins their searches with a fundamental questions - about the nature and essence of the human being, would then be able to perceive inherent in a man the internal dynamism, so important for a personal development and improvement.

W artykule podjęta została próba wykazania praktycznej weryfikacji argumentu werytatywnego w życiu Edyty Stein. Argument werytatywny służy uzasadnianiu wiarygodności Objawienia Bożego i chrześcijańskiego poprzez wykazywanie, że źródłem wszelkiej prawdy jest Bóg, który jest też ostateczną Prawdą wyjaśniającą sens życia człowieka i wszystkiego, co istnieje. Edyta Stein, szukając prawdy i sensu życia, odnalazła Boga − najwyższą Prawdę. Przez spotkanie z Bogiem odkryła swe przeznaczenie, życie w zjednoczeniu z Nim w wieczności. Jej droga do prawdy i Boga nosi znamiona procesu dochodzenia do ostatecznej Prawdy, Boga Objawienia, a proces ten zawiera się w strukturze argumentu werytatywnego. W ten sposób doświadczenie Edyty Stein może być potraktowane jako praktyczne zweryfikowanie tegoż argumentu.
In the article I attempt to verify practically a veritative argument in Edith Stein's life. That argument serves to substantiate the credibility of Divine and Christian Revelation by pointing at God, the Ultimate Truth that explains the meaning of human life and of all that has existed, as the source of any truth. Edith Stein found God, the highest Truth, by examining the truth and searching the sense of existence in her life. She unravelled her destination, her eternal life in unity with God, through encountering Him. Her searching the Truth and God were marked by the process of reaching tha absolute Truth, God of Revelation, the process of which has been a part of veritative argument's structure. Thus, the experience of Edith Stein may have been classified as the practical verification of the above argument.

W dziełach Edyty Stein zaznaczają się wyraźnie myśli św. Teresy z Ávili. Zapewne podobieństwo charakterologiczne ma pewne uzasadnienie w tym względzie, jednakże powinowactwa te wynikają przede wszystkim z duchowości karmelitańskiej, w której obie są zakorzenione. Ta bliska paralela widoczna jest przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do takich kategorii jak prawda, mądrość czy kwestia kobieca. Pomimo dystansu historycznego i wielu biografiznych różnic obie święte włączają się w tradycję karmelitańską przez wspólne im duchowe doświadczenie, rozumienie i wyrażanie.
In Edith Stein’s works one can fid reflctions of some of Saint Teresa of Àvila’s ideas. Similarity of their characters can be one clue to explain it, but what’s more important – it is their Carmelite spirituality what makes this resemblance. Close parallel between them both can be seen in matters like concept of true, of wisdom, and the issues of woman. Beside historical distance and all biographical diffrences, Edith Stein and Saint Teresa of Àvila join into Carmelite tradition through spiritual experience, understanding and expression.

The core of the article constitute the letters that Edith Stein (who later became St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) and Roman Ingarden, whom she met in Gottingen, exchanged between 1917 and 1939. When they met they were both students of Edmund Husserl and were among the members of so-called Gottingen Phenomenologists’ Club that was not only of international nature but also accepted females as its members, which was quite an exception in the first two decades of the 20th century. The issues addressed in Stein’s letters to her friend from Poland centered on two aspects: behind-the-scenes functioning of the phenomenologists gathered around their master (Husserl), as well as the inner path in the course of which Stein’s spiritual metamorphosis takes place. It is obvious that with reference to the former issue, the works and the philosophical views of Edmund Husserl served as the source of intellectual inspiration. The young scholar reached beyond them though. Her philosophical achievements as well as her inner development were deeply influenced by another professor of philosophy, Adolf Reinach, thirty four years of age at that time. The latter problematic plane discussed in the letters confirms that “[t]he biography of Edith Stein is one of the most fascinating life stories not only in modern times. It is connected both with the content of her thought as well as with her life path that was bold climbing towards perfection as well as a great transformation; this transformation has been defined both as the grandest and the most complex one since the change that was the part of St Paul’s, or Saul of Tarsus, life” [in: Anna Grzegorczyk, Ponad kulturami. This duality of thought, seemingly referring to the realms so distant that virtually impossible to combine, become connected by one feature: the author’s universality of thought which points clearly that Edith Stein’s philosophical attitude reaches the intercultural dimension. Consequently, the brilliance of the author and philosopher becomes obvious, and „stems from the unique combination of cognitive passion with transcendent sense” [Ibid, p. 41]

Philosophy opened Edith Stein the perspective of Absolute, but it was the testimony of people, for whom faith was the centre of life, that decided of her baptism in the Catholic church. Phenomenology prepared her mentally to the later reception of God but it was the discovery of the depth and strength of individual people’s faith in Christ that determined her conversion into Catholicism. First Edith Stein was deeply moved by her lecturer Max Scheler, who clearly presented her the world of catholic values. Than she experienced profoundly the death of her friend Adolph Reinach. His funeral was a kind of a spiritual breakthrough, which she later described as her first meeting with Cross and its victory over death. An enormous influence on her soul had an anonymous woman whom Edith met in the cathedral. Edith Stein was astounded to see somebody who could stop in the middle of a busy day and spend some precious moments talking to Someone whose presence Edith had not perceived yet. The last witness of faith, Saint Teresa of Ávila, was the one who definitely convinced Edith Stein that the sense of life cannot be found anywhere else but in Christ. That Saint evidently proved that it is Jesus Christ who is the root of human existence; He is the Truth and the final answer to all people’s questions and doubts. The lecture of Saint Teresa’s autobiography was the final step on Edith Stein’s road to God. It resulted in baptism in the Catholic church which took place in January 1922.

In the year 2012 we commemorated the 70th anniversary of the death of Edith Stein in Auschwitz. Together with the Polish Council of Christians and Jews, a Way of Prayer took place along the railway ramp which leads to the crematoria. Bishops of all the dioceses where she once had lived celebrated Eucharist next to the crematoria. In January 1933, when Hitler came to power, Edith Stein wrote a prophetic letter to Pope Pius XI about the relationship of the Church to the Jews. In October 1933, she entered the Carmel where she chose the name of Teresa Blessed by the Cross. For her, all her life in the Carmel was a way of solidarity with her Jewish people. In Auschwitz she shared the fate of her people who were destroyed in the Shoah. She compels us as Christians to take the Shoah seriously.

Opis:

In this article I analyze the cognitive possibilities lying on the boundary of the finite and eternity being with reference to Saint Thomas Aquinas and Edith Stein’sthought. According to Saint Thomas, the rational cognition, which covers what is calleda natural world, is the highest form of knowledge and fixes its limit. Edith Stein, on thecontrary, claims that a mystical cognizance, which bases on experience and empathy,enriched by the message of the Gospel, should complement the rational one. What’scommon in those two concepts is a reference to God’s grace – the moments of revelationenlighten the efforts of human intellect. Thus knowledge on the eternal being merges both natural and supernatural cognizance.

Tekst stanowi część pracy magisterskiej. Artykuł jest próbą nakreślenia pozycji kobiety w hierarchii Kościoła. Kluczowym problemem jest porównanie działalności naukowej, teologicznej i filozoficznej dwóch wybitnych kobiet-lekarzy: Edyty Stein i Hildegardy z Bingen. Ich myśli są uchwycone z perspektywy kontekstu historycznego i politycznego. Jak się okazuje, uczona żyjąca w średniowieczu cieszyła się autonomią i poważaniem oraz – w przeciwieństwie do Stein – potrafiła przyczynić się do wzrostu poczucia wartości wśród kobiet, których była mentorką.
The article is an attempt to outline a woman’s position in the hierarchy of the Church. The key problem is the comparison of the scientific, theological and philosophical activities of the two distinguished women doctors: Edyta Stein and Hildegarda from Bingen. Their thoughts are captured from the perspective of historical and political context. As it turns out, the scholar living in the Middle Ages enjoyed greater autonomy and respect, and unlike Stein, she managed to surround women with self-esteem and conviction.
