The present article is an attempt to use the metaphorical category of temperature in the interpretation of literary creations of love in two different cultural contexts: against the background of the emotional culture of the inter-war period as well as of the present time. The analysis focusses on two literary texts: Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg (1936) by Ödön von Horváth as well as Don Juan de la Mancha (2007) by Robert Menasse, which encourage to reflect on remarkable transformations of the culture of love and the positioning of both men and women within the new emotional styles.

W artykule rozważana jest możliwość ustanowienia na gruncie literaturoznawstwa rosyjskiego, poprzez analogię do tekstu petersburskiego, tekstu donżuanowskiego literatury rosyjskiej. W tym celu ustanowiony został zespół cech wspólnych dla utworów odwołujących się do postaci Don Juana. Jednym z dowodów istnienia tekstu donżuanowskiego jest krąg tekstów odwołujących się do modelu słynnego uwodziciela i prześmiewcy. Innymi wyznacznikami są obecność osnowy mitycznej, związek ze sferą ‘sacrum’ i ‘profanum’, obecność konstant w zachowaniu Don Juana, zbliżony sposób językowego kodowania i inne.
The author of the paper considers the possibility of creating in the Russian theory of literature, by way of analogy to the ‘Petersburg text,’, the ‘Don-Juan text’ of Russian literature. To this purpose, a complex of permanent futures shared by literary works that refer to Don Juan are described. The existence of a ‘Don-Juan text’ is evidenced by a group of literary works that employ the archetype of the famous seducer. Other indicators are: the presence of mythological structure, connection with the spheres of the sacred and the profane, constants in Don Juan’s behaviour, specific vocabulary, classifying the most recurrent words and phrases according to their semantics and function in the text.

In this article the author argues that Route of Don Quixote is a mnemotope, which allows to examine the relations betwen landscape, literary trails and collective memory. The author suggests that the Mancha’s landscape can be considered as the first in the history of Western culture and this fact should be connected with the values of the Spanish community. Noticing that the Route of Don Quixote is the mnemotope clarifies why it was the first European Cultural Itinerary constructed on a literary figure, explains the political usage of the figure of Don Quixote, the reasons for passionate discussions on how to commemorate cervantine anniversaries or dispute about the true knight-errant wandering route. The author explores some of the contemporary cervantine place of memory (the date of III and IV Centenary of the edition of the first part of the novel, the famous Azorín’s journey, Quixotic street names, „true” novelistic places, landscape with windmills). The author characterizes various communities of memory (exiliados, readers, cervantists),that used the figure of Quixote. The author asks whether traveling in search of the knight’s footsteps is drifting the physical space or rather an imitation of his actions. From the perspective of memory research there are multiple routes of Don Quixote, because in different communities are cultivated different memories of true knight’s route. Using the Halbwachs’ concept the author shows the importance of location of Don Quixote’s adventures. Pondering the meaning of „death of cervantine landscape” the author concludes that the literary vision of The Mancha, „holy landscape” in which the community reaffirms its value, still exists.

The aim of this article is to analyse the presence of Commander in Mozart’s Don Giovanni as well as show the references to other opera depictions regarding the myth of Don Juan. Commander, also known as the Stone Guest, is an animate tombstone figure, which appears in every classic-based version of the story about Don Juan Tenorio (Don Giovanni) in order to summon a rogue to conversion; when he fails to do so, he drags him to hell. The spectacular character of the final scene turned out to serve as an inspiration for numerous opera makers, from Mozart to Rimsky-Korsakov (Mozart and Salieri). This theme, which has not been the subject of research before, is definitely worth exploring.

Artykuł analizuje literacką postać Don Kichota pod kątem jej związków z rzeczywistym szaleństwem lub psychozą. Figura Don Kichota ukazuje ambiwalentną pozycję społeczną osoby chorej psychicznie – szaleniec jest społecznym odmieńcem, choć budzi też fascynację. Don Kichot – tak jak wielu psychotyków – jest niezdolny do swobodnego przechodzenia między różnymi nastawieniami wobec rzeczywistości i posługuje się tylko jednym kluczem interpretacyjnym, zaczerpniętym z rycerskich romansów. Doświadczenie Don Kichota (i psychotyka) jest jednak pod pewnym względem bogatsze niż doświadczenie człowieka zdrowego, nie ma w nim bowiem wydarzeń błahych, a wszystko ma swoje głębsze znaczenie. W ostatniej części artykułu przedstawione zostają podobieństwa między psychotycznym sposobem myślenia Don Kichota a kartezjańską koncepcją podmiotowości – ta ostatnia zawiera „szalony” aspekt w postaci możliwości solipsyzmu.

Opis:
A very particular form of reception of the Don Quijote de la Mancha is musical reception. In transcoding from narrative prose to the language of the Opera, the librettist shows his personal knowledge of the work of Miguel de Cervantes, read in the original text or in translation. Since the eighteenth century, in some librettos written in Italian, adherence to the hypotext, albeit interpreted in a new light, leads in some passages to an authentic rewriting of the play. The aim of this article is to show the processes of transcoding de Cervantes’ novels based on significant Italian librettists.
Szczególną formą odbioru Don Kiszota z la Manchy jest recepcja muzykalna. W transkodowaniu z narracyjnej prozy na język operowy, librecista wykazuje się własną znajomością dzieła Miguela de Cervantesa, czytanego w oryginale lub w przekładzie. Od XVIII wieku, w niektórych librettach napisanych po włosku, przestrzeganie hipotekstu, aczkolwiek interpretowanego w nowym świetle, prowadzi w niektórych fragmentach do autentycznego przepisania sztuki. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie procesów transkodowania powieści de Cervantesa na podstawie znaczących włoskich librecistów.

The essay is devoted to a very specific and interesting example of intersemiotical link between the scene of the Senator’s ball in the third part of „Dziady” by A. Mickiewicz and „Don Giovanni” by W. A. Mozart. Analysis of some elements of the opera included by Mickiewicz in his text, in the way of ‘bricolage’, leads to the conclusion that the similarities in both compositions are not restricted to the construction level, but they also seem to have ideological consequences which have an impact on the overall force of the work by Mickiewicz. Its connection with Mozart’s and da Ponte’s work, even if visible in just a few parts of „Dziady”, is a guide to the simultaneous reading of both texts. This read develops their interpretation and understanding as well as expresses the idea of providence present in Mozart’s and Mickiewicz’s masterpieces.

The aim of this article is to analyze possible literary influence on the drama The Last Day of Don Juan’s Life by the Polish writer S. Zhevusky. We took into consideration the biography of Zhevusky and the detailed analysis of his work and we proposed the thesis about the possible influences of French and Russian literature on the drama The Last Day of Don Juan’s life. As we could observed, the drama by Zhevusky showed some similarity (taking into account the language and the plot) to the following literary works: Don Juan by Moliere, Demon by M. Lermontov, The Stone Guest by A. Pushkin and Don Juan by A. Tolstoy.

Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest trop będący wielkim myślowym wyzwaniem dla każdego, kto czyta francuskiego strukturalistę i chce zrozumieć jego twórczość. W wywiadzie-rzece Z bliska i oddali C. Lévi-Strauss zdradza klucz do swojej duszy: mówi, że jego umysłem rządzi Don Kichot. Po tak jasnej deklaracji oczywista staje się perspektywa interpretacyjna Smutku tropików, w której jedną z podstawowych figur stanie się Błędny Rycerz. Ostatecznie okazuje się, iż Don Kichot podróżuje, by aktywnie wpływać na otaczającą go rzeczywistość. Wyobrażenie przeszłości nakłada się w jego umyśle na teraźniejszość i zmusza do działania, ignoruje granice. Przez to staje się szaleńcem. Lévi-Strauss podróżuje, by cofnąć się w czasie. Rola etnografa usprawiedliwia to równie ekstrawaganckie przedsięwzięcie. Narzucone przez naukę procedury tworzą niezbędny dystans, ale jednocześnie stają się źródłem niespełnienia. Artykuł stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy Don Kichot – jego myśli i czyny wywierają wpływ na rzeczy; czy stanowią jedność, Tego Co Analogiczne? A jeśli tak, czym byłoby wielkie marzenie antropologa, którego umysłem rządzi Błędny Rycerz?
A starting point of this article is a trace which is a huge intellectual challenge for everybody that reads the French structuralist and wants to understand his creation. In an extended interview Conversations with Claude Lévi-Strauss, he reveals the key to his soul saying that his mind is led by Don Quixote. After such a clear declaration, the interpretative perspective of Tristes Tropique – where a knight-errant evolves into one of the fundamental figures – becomes obvious. Eventually, it turns out that Don Quixote travels in order to influence the surrounding reality actively. In his mind, the reflection of past overlays the presence and impels him to act, ignores the boundaries. Because of that he becomes a madman. Lévi-Strauss travels In order to move back In time. An etnographer role excuses this eccentric undertaking. Procedures imposed by science create the necessary distance but at the same time they become the source of non-fulfillment. The article attempts to answer a question whether Don Quixote – his thoughts and actions influence the things; whether they are a union of That What is analogical. If the answer was yes, what would be the great anthropologist’s dream, whose mind is controlled by a knight-errant?

This article gives an account of the power relationship in Don Quixote, a famous Miguel de Cervantes novel. While Don Quixote is deluded into thinking that he is really a brave and noble knight errant who will set right all the wrongs of the world, he is faced with his relatives and friends, his niece, the housekeeper, Nicolas the barber, the priest, the bachelor Sansón Carrasco, and many others who try to get him back to his hacienda in order to “rescue” him. It is argued that their attitudes can be seen as strategies to defend a social system to which a madness of Don Quixote was a thread. What Don Quixote opposed were the institutions on which the social system in the 17th century Spain was founded: the family, the state, the church, the scientific authority. Although the violent and paternalistic attempts were undertaken to stop Don Quixote’s mission, the real purpose of his “benefactors” was not an annihilation but a symbolic appropriation of Quixote’s courage, spontaneity and firmness.
Este artículo explica las relaciones de poder en El Quijote la famosa novela de Miguel de Cervantes. En cuanto don Quijote cae presa de la ilusión de que él es en realidad el valeroso y noble caballero andante cuya misión es enmendar todos los males del mundo, sus amigos, el barbero Nicolas, el cura, el bachiller Sansón Carrasco y muchos otros, intentan hacerlo volver a su hacienda con fin de “rescatarlo”. Se argumenta que sus actitudes pueden verse como estrategias para defender el sistema social al cual la locura de don Quijote fue una amenaza. Lo que don Quijote cuestionaba eran las instituciones sobre las cuales descansaba el sistema social en España del siglo XVII: la familia, el estado, la iglesia, la autoridad científica. A pesar de que los benefactores del caballero de La Mancha utilizaban medios violentos y paternalistas, su propósito real no era la aniquilación del Quijote sino la apropiación simbólica de su valor, espontaneidad y firmeza.
W artykule wyjaśniono relacje władzy w słynnej powieści Don Kichot autorstwa Miguela de Cervantesa. Gdy Don Kichot staje się ofiarą złudzenia, że jest odważnym i szlachetnym rycerzem, którego misją jest naprawienie wszelkich bolączek świata, musi zmierzyć się ze swoimi krewnymi i przyjaciółmi, siostrzenicą, gosposią, fryzjerem Nicolasem, kapłanem, Sansónem Carrasco i wieloma innymi osobami, które próbują zmusić go do powrotu na swoją farmę, aby go „uratować”. Ich postawy można postrzegać jako strategie obrony systemu społecznego, w którym szaleństwo Don Kichota stanowiło zagrożenie. Don Kichot sprzeciwiał się instytucjom, na których opierał się siedemnastowieczny system społeczny w Hiszpanii. Były to: rodzina, państwo, kościół, autorytet naukowy. Chociaż podjęto gwałtowne i paternalistyczne próby, by powstrzymać misję Don Kichota, prawdziwym celem jego „dobroczyńców” nie była anihilacja, lecz symboliczne przywłaszczenie jego odwagi, spontaniczności i stanowczości.

Opis:
Don DeLillo’s White Noise depicts a world of rapid techno-scientific and economical changes. Paul Virilio’s concepts of dromology and speed, as well as his notions of accident and technology, seem to be the most relevant in order to examine a novel centrally concerned with change, speed and technology. This article first offers an analysis of White Noise in the light of Virilio’s concept of integral accident in relation to the negative consequences brought about by industrial and technological progress. This is followed by a discussion of the relevance to the novel of Virilio’s theories about architecture and space. Finally, Virilio’s theories about the replacement of conventional war with pure and info wars are discussed in the context of the central event of the novel. Reading the American writer through the lens of the French theorist can shed light on the enduring relevance of both.

Opis:
The paper deals with the critical texts of two writers / researchers whose roots come from Russia and interests are focused on similar literature areas among other things on Don Quijote. Zofia Szmydtowa a Russian researcher whose career was developed mainly in Poland and Vladimir Nabokov, whose critical and literature analysis were conceived outside Russia decided to make an attempt to decode the Cervantes’ masterpiece. Both authors have their own concept concerning interpretation and analysis of the Cervantes’ novel. The author of the paper tries to find similarities in their understanding and critical idiom, discovering the justification of such different critical texts. Although texts were written in different circumstances and environments they have a lot in common what is shown in the paper.

The contemporary rewritings of Don Juan’s myth highlight several forms of hybridity and illustrate the stakes involved. The hybridation affects in the first place the sources of the myth since the authors appeal to numerous intertextual references. But the successive transpositions of the mythical scenario also lead to a generic hybridity. This intermediality has a reflexive dimension: it raises the question of the limits of language to talk about the myth and abolishes the frontier between fiction and critical speech.

Artykuł stanowi próbę odczytania wstecz historii pożądania uosobionej w micie Don Juana, a więc wyznaczenia takiej perspektywy, która umożliwia interpretację dwudziestowiecznej rewolucji seksualnej poprzez ukazanie jej historycznych i archetypicznych wzorów. Autor przedstawia hybrydyczne związki łączące operową aktualizację tego mitu z jego interpretacjami filmowymi, filozoficznymi i muzycznymi, starając się dowieść, że zjawisko powszechnej współcześnie estetyzacji życia opiera się na iluzji, jaką jest możliwość osiągnięcia absolutnego spełnienia w przemijającym świecie. Mit Don Juana urzeczywistnia właśnie ten wymiar współczesności, która temu, co estetyczne (zmysłowe), nadaje rangę absolutu, a liczne artystyczne aktualizacje tego mitu potwierdzają, że zachodnioeuropejskie imaginarium ma swój afektywny substrat w postaci pożądania, które jest niemożliwe do zaspokojenia.
This article is an attempt to read the history of courtly love backwards, thus setting a perspective that enables the interpretation of the contemporary sexual revolution by revealing its historical and archetypal patterns. It presents the hybrid relationships linking operatic “archaicness” with film, philosophy, and music in their contemporary artistic forms. The central argument is that the widespread phenomenon of aestheticization of life is based on the illusion that one is able to achieve absolute fulfillment in a transient world. The myth of Don Juan embodies this very dimension of modernity, which gives the aesthetic (sensual) the rank of the absolute, while numerous artistic actualizations of this myth confirm that the Western European imaginarium has its affective substrate in the form of desire, which is impossible to satisfy.
